One Page At A Time, Jess Wade Is Changing Wikipedia

"So today. We're speaking with just weighed in experimental. Physicists at college. London and every night for the past three years just has written a wikipedia entry about a woman or poc scientists. And if this sounds like a big commitment that's because it is. But what motivates. Just keep with. It is the possibility of using wikipedia to combat the bias. In science. We see it in who gets through peer review. We see it in who gets big papers. Cited we see who gets big grants. We see it and who wins awards. And that means that the people that we celebrate and champion incredibly homogeneous and when wikipedia launched the internet was a very small space and it was very dominated by particular types of people. This kind of you know. Tech bro attitude that we still see in silicon valley and places like that majority white majority western a lot from north america some from western europe and those were the first people to start using it engaging in contributing to wikipedia backed according to a twenty twenty study. Eighty seven percents of wikipedia. Contributors are men with media includes wikipedia wick wicky quote a bunch of other platforms and for just this bias in. Authorship creates a bias in who gets a biography so this huge systematic bias against women against people of color against people from the global south against people who are from any kind of particular marginalized group. So it's kind of two things when we have a very diverse editorship and to the things they writes about a not very diverse and this is obviously impacted by the way that science celebrates people and who took about who we define as notable. Right right just to confirm by. Now you've written what nine hundred articles for the site. Oh no no. How many i've written i've written one thousand two hundred one thousand two hundred whatever so sub usually get a bit excited so obviously that's not three hundred sixty five times three so sometimes i get a little carried away but in general i try and stick to one a day sometimes. Yeah yeah. I mean. I've been going for three. Yes so i've done a pretty good job that in those i. We thought a lot about how to ask you this question. Because twelve hundred articles is an extraordinary accomplishment as far as contributing to this encyclopedia. And so the question we're going to go with is if you could build a quarantine bubble with some of the people that you've written about living or deceased who would you include and why should question so so for sure. I'd have to have some of the people developing vaccines enough air. The person who created the oxford vaccine which is is the vaccine this just been approved for use in the uk. A viral vector vaccine is a phenomenal professor. Sara gilbert sara gilbert has had this kind of fascinating rich directory working on the development of a whole bunch of different vaccines that can walk in different corona viruses and kiss kubat. I don't know if you've come across any of your reporting. She's she's a young african american women who is at the national institute of health and had walked back scenes for for sars and mers. So has this really great legacy but also alongside. I kind of scientific research. An extraordinary publication list works to support people from undeserved communities and walks to really amplify the voices of scientists who too often overlooked but also to support young people and getting into an ethic about science. So that people at different ends of that curric- his kizzie is still very young. Where saratoga established professor but both of them have this kind of extraordinary pathway to really ultimately creating the thing. That's going to save the entire world so suddenly. If i if i had according to about they would be in it. I think that. I mean how many people might out in my quarantine babo because i could keep going. There's no official guidance but the often cited wisdom is less than ten. I'm so primed and ready to tell you stories about everyone. I'm so excited about them. So mainly because i have been. She's someone who i wrote about right at the beginning of my wikipedia. A mathematician who gladys west. She was born in virginia in the thousand nine hundred and she went to college. She went to a historically black college and university to study maths. She goes off in becomes the teach She then eventually what the us government. Wes she did the early computations and calculations for gps so for all of the technologies that almost everything that we do day to day relies on. Now you know you get in your car keys your phone. You try and navigate took particular location. You use the technology that gladys west created. And when i made gladys west page in two thousand eighteen is really hard to find. Information about. Her book is what for the us government so lots of things are adopted. A couple of months. After i put the page live so after i'd finished writing it and put it onto wikipedia. She was selected by the bbc is one of the top one hundred women so she went into the kind of top one hundred women in the world for any intentional creation. Contribution ebba and when you're on a web page like fat when you're on a page so much traffic and insight people hop over to the wikipedia page really quickly so you could just see the numbers of page views of of the wikipedia. Page going up and up and that meant that more and more people contributed to it so grew story grew. How did that make you feel. I just loved it. I was reflecting on this a lot with with my parents lockdown wife. I kept going live. I kept doing this. And i find nothing more rewarding honestly than seeing other people get recognized then champion for what they've done so absolutely love to have quarantine bubble that so many things that i want us. Yeah and you're collecting. I suppose historical information across different websites and books to write these biographies. Has it ever feel like time travel. Yeah completely does feel like time travel. It's it's so it's so interesting. The things that i find kind of thrilling and exciting now feels such a kind of privilege in a rush to be able to get access to all of the resources that we can do. Now you know online libraries. Nine archives sites archived magazines scientific journals extraordinary places that that turn to for this and there are times when you just feel like fantastic achievement. So so if you see in a lot of the world's when women get married they take their partner's name so sometimes it's quite difficult to find out things about their lives if they got married and all of their publications in this new name. And when you find that one link that one connection that tells you that maiden name and then you can go back and find their phd thesis or who was there examining all this extra level of information. So when i get to that. I'm like jump off the sofer like this is great and say yeah. It's completely like a portal into another world. Right i mean. I've chills just listening to you. Talk about this kind of forensic reconstruction of people's lives and who they were outside of who. They married or other kinds of societal markers of that. Yeah a big part of it. I think a big part of my efforts wikipedia. Who i've met the people that we've trained editor phones is to not just make pages about women no make pages about people of color but to make them as good as the comparable page would-be about a white man. Yeah yeah you've been amazing way of connecting all these dots. I really appreciate hearing that I wanna ask you one one last thing. Which is i know that in a lot of ways just talking to you. It sounds like this project is part of such a bigger desire to see science really include nbc driven by all kinds of people. And what do you think it will really take to bring more women and poc's into science so that they stay. Oh such a good question and such a huge one. I mean they're very preliminary simple things that low hanging fruit. If you will know why we don't already have in place you know proper care and support for people who have caring responsibilities so whether that's you know elderly parents or sick parents or especially now in the pandemic who seeing the importance of the childcare and how that skin influence women scientific careers if they're having to work from home but i think more than that we need to really look a scientific institutions and ask really critical questions about why people are leaving. Why do we see. So few black professes. Why do we see so few women in position of leadership. Why do lgbt he. Plus scientists not feel comfortable being out when they're in the scientific workplace and then really put money to and take action to address those individual needs. But i think from a kind of how you get more diverse people into science. I really honestly think the answer is improving our education systems and really support our teachers better. Pay them as well as we pay are bankers so that they stay and so that they create kind of inspiring science lessons. Then go out and got this next generation to come in who keep pushing for this change that we want

"So I'm glad you're modest but the fact is the facts you called everyone and you and you did it what is it do? You think that makes shows so successful, I, think people probably connect to like a real life quality to in terms of our economic struggle and these imperfect characters and no one's trying to win a beauty pageant. Like hopefully, people turn it on and they just see regular looking Americans that are trying to show what it's like to get by Yeah. I. Think There's a lot of humor obviously and a lot of love in the family I feel like. People sense that we really love each other and that maybe as part of it too, and there's price some nostalgia to where everybody is now there isn't x factor in casts which I'm sure you've experienced a bunch of times, which is like sometimes there's magic in sometimes there's not like again sorry to keep going back to parenthood but. Just genuinely love the shit out of each other like so much. So happy to go to work and who am I gonNA be in a scene with today God is grabbing May and forever. Yeah me and may it to play all day today like there was such joy and interacting with one another that it's palpable I think yeah, it is. I mean and I've had that also before conversely and then you think it's Great and you watch it and you're like, Oh, well, it didn't translate onscreen you know a thousand percent but again, it's all kind of just magic. You can't really design it. You just gotTa hope something lucky happens in some way. Okay. I. Just wanted to spend a couple minutes because I've got to meet him several times and I just have this enormous affinity for him but is John Goodman. The greatest guy on the planet. Johnson credible I just study John and Lori to for like how they take a seen apart how they put it back together what they're doing. You know John's a serious guy. He's not probably what people picture. He's very serious very polite very hard on himself so he really wants to get it right. But yeah, an incredible person to the core for sure. Yeah, and life is fantastic. Isn't it short? Two years? I? Did a Sitcom I just was like this is heaven I get to go play and I get to go home and I get to be a parent and it's just it's pretty lovely isn't it but I guess because you're producing you're probably there a lot longer than everyone else It is a great schedule and I have such an amazing team of people I work with that make my load lighter and especially right now when people can't go anywhere or see anybody that were in this opportunity where people are figuring out a way to do a lot of testing in, make it as safe as possible to come someplace and so grateful also just as you're. Watching the world, the older I get I'm just grateful to be alive. Yeah. Would it be fair to say that one of the appeals of your show is that you have these characters on it that span the whole political spectrum and yet everyone loves each other. That's a message that like we are all very much longing for I. Hope that people feel that way I mean I..

"Oh My goodness a store you would only hear from a hockey player. I know it's horrible and then I went home. The long story short is I couldn't go find quirky NAMIC. I do wonder and I'm going to tell Monica thing which he's told here. So I'm not I'm not talking about school, but Monica had an interesting experience in high school where she didn't think any of the boys liked her debt. I disagree. I'm whatever I'll tell you her story. No boys liked her. So her trick was to like people that were so blatantly out of her league whether they were older or they were the football star, it was subconsciously but intentionally picking people that could not ever be a possibility so that she wouldn't have really get rejected by them really because if they don't like you, you're like well I brad. Pitt. So obviously, right. So I just curious at this point you're probably aware that you're a lesbian and are you may be picking people so it seems like Oh yeah. I like guys to I like this guy. Is never going to like me so I don't have to ever confronted, but I'm expressing like a guy do you think any of that was going on? No, I genuinely liked him. Yeah. I. Genuinely Had A. Crush on him. Okay. Great. I was wrong. Makes lots of theories here. I'm open I'm open to any theories. Theories based solely on her life experience or I learned to project through her I always knew how to project for myself, but now I not dry to do it through. Monica..

ABC's ‘The Conners’ Premiered Without Roseanne. How Did It Go?

"Why this surprised me because I mean there have been some good reviews. But Neil Justin in the Star Tribune who covers the TV in media. Here's what he wrote the Connors is even better without disgraced Roseanne. Wow. ABC sitcom is heartbreaking. But also hilarious. I was surprised. Yeah. Here's what he wrote ABC game. Critics look at two episodes of the new series, but only on the condition. That they not reveal how Roseanne CONNER is no longer in the picture fine. What can be said is that the explanation seems completely natural as if the writers new last year that the character might disappear it's heartbreaking, but also hilarious. He goes on to write laughing inappropriately is what mom taught us to do says older daughter Becky in Tuesday's premier. The overshadowed cast mates Neil rights overshadowed, sometimes by Roseanne finally gets to do more than bicker. Especially the sisters. And she said that Laura he said rather Laurie Metcalf as Jackie has a scene in which Jackie edges toward like a breaking point while rearranging the kitchen and Neil says that that scene alone could earn her a fourth EMMY suites. Yeah. He writes bars contributions can't be brushed under the couch her brand of dark humor along with her insistence in Americans struggling to pay the bills should command center stage remained vital the series. The disgrace star may not be in a position to unleash one of her signature cackles, but viewers have every reason to roar. Roar and breathe a sigh of relief. So that's what Neil rights today. Four stars. I was it's interesting that Neil wrote this because last night, I wrote I think it was Vanity Fair. Esquire got together with some former writers of Roseanne from the original run and some talked. Under the condition of being anonymous and said, it was fifty fifty some said that the show they wished the show the best. And there were there were two from the original run that said, look, no matter how disgraced no matter how much you don't like her personally. It's very hard to replace a lead of a show. And you have to have this one writer was like here's the deal. It takes a certain this is almost verbatim. It takes a certain personality type to lead lead sitcom Roseanne had it and it's hard to fill that void. With an ensemble. And the writer said, I don't know if it's a he or she. But the writer said they love John John Goodman, love Laurie Metcalf and love Sara Gilbert, they said, but none of them have that X factor that can lead a show Louis Metcalf. Could do it you do. Yeah. And I feel like this back in the day Roseanne did. But not now when this rebuild came back. I thought are acting was awful me to see eye gla-. I said the same thing I thought I remember our review after the premiere of the reboot I thought Roseanne's timing which she was known for her her timing was always very natural. I think we went back that day that we talked about it on this show. I went back, and I watched two of her routines on Carson and her delivery in the standard was like she was telling us a story her her acting in the premiere last year was very stilted. It was like she was reading. It was very Rattatte her reading of the lines. It seemed like lines. I think she felt uncomfortable. Doing this whole reboot. I listened to. She was a guest on the Joe Rogan podcast. Oh, you listen to that. I listened to the whole thing. Yes. She kind of mentioned in that that you know, in terms of the in the writer's room. She wanted to have a different voice be represented. She's like, yes, you can have all of the Trump jokes all you want. But at the same time there needs to be some balance here. So she would fight for. Digs on her character voted for Trump. And so she said I want to have some kind of balance here because our people would have voted for him. Back in the Connors we represent. Yes. That's what we would have represented, or at least let's have some some play back and forth. And she said that she it was not very receptive in the writer's room. So for sure I think that that first season it was already feeling uncomfortable. And when that tweet came out, it just was okay. Let's just this is this is our time to go. I do we have to give some credit for two Roseanne for giving up her financial. Gay from an stake in the show to be able to have the character. Either the actors and everyone behind the scene continue their job that was very giving of her. Absolutely. Because if you got no reason, everybody should know the ins and outs of TV Roseanne owned, you know, owned part if not all of the rights to the key. Well, it's her. Yeah. To the rights to that character. So in order to move forward ABC demanded that Roseanne have no interest whatsoever. And I guess it's very apparent her. Name is nowhere in the credits. And you will notice if eagle-eyed viewers pay close attention to the pictures in the Connor living room. There are no pictures of Roseanne anywhere like her. They they don't even have the rights, nor do I think they wanted to use her likeness in any way, which I find fascinating. More of her side after that interview too. Watching it tonight. And that's why I'm curious to see how they do this. And where they're going to go with it. I'm sure it's gonna be really funny, but it is heartbreaking on so many levels. Yeah. What what do you feel? We don't have a lot of time. But but I didn't get to listen to this. Yeah. What is there something specifically that turned your dial a little bit to see her side a little bit more? Absolutely. Yeah. I mean, she felt she's feels very misunderstood that. You know, she she didn't mean her tweet in that way. And also that this swiftness. I mean, I remember when this happened. We were all like, yeah. Okay. That's what you get. But at the same time, I two of her tweets it was this tweet. And there was another tweet like many years ago that was kind of brought to light in the controversy of the the, you know, the current the recent tweet they got fired, but you just who the swiftness of that. And that they're just moving forward. There is some. Kind of sadness there when she was talking about it that she wishes the show. Success, but you could tell she doesn't want to be a part of it. And it's just. I I'm confused though, you you you said you started to see her side. Yeah. Just sadness that she was. She was a part of it. And that the the feel so misunderstood that. That's not met by her tweet. And Joe Rogan, you know, he's also he's he agrees with her that she's a comedian. And that you know that this is a slippery slope of one tweet or two over how long she's been on Twitter can end thing so swiftly. They had other examples of people who've said far worse things that were given. And also they were backed by their station like they used Smith A B as an example her tweet that controversy, but comedy central was behind her supporting her for it. She felt no support from ABC. Yeah. And so some good points there. I I need to listen to the interview

"Nine. We're about to choke about something that affects everybody's lives here at CVS, and I'd never been nervous in my life. But I'm kind of very nervous right now. As you will know Julie's husband is in the news. And she's taking off time to be with her family. Very good. They all saw the light going on. So. You better clap, clap, I know. All right. Okay. So that's how it starts about less stories are so similar the packing is so similar that for me. He's not been convicted of any crime. But obviously the man has a problem. I like to say that Mr. moon vest has step down, and Mr. moon vest is an extremely wealthy man and good luck to him the being a wealthy, man. He's worked hard. He made this network number one. However, when a new regime comes into a company, we all know, they sweep clean everybody here at CBS is nervous about jobs. Yes. The ladies at this table will go on. And we'll probably find another show if our show please God, it's not taken off will always find another job. And nobody's in that position yet. It's just historically when somebody new comes in things change. I did not see her turning that. On her job. Position that is a shocking turn of events for her. Just her way of having something to say besides of all the spins I didn't see her saying. Decent spin actual jobs to make it more about don't blame us for what leads did let our show stay. Was she reading a script Brin? No, not that. I could see. No. But you know, maybe a teleprompter. There's no way proved that script. I cannot believe she went there. I'm shy. Yeah. Me too. I know he'll be fine. Get other jobs. Oh, dear God. Oh, you're mrS Ozzy Osborne. Anything just but these are the poor poor ladies at the table, Sara Gilbert, what does she have? This is an important time in our culture. Just because who is who's talking. Sara gilbert. Yes. Yes. All right. Important time in our culture time in our culture and just because this hits close to home. It doesn't change this story all women's stories matter and these women. Very serious and the appropriate actions need to take place, and I am I am happy. When women are heard because for a long time. They haven't been. I was I was dismissive yesterday as we talked about some of the allegations because I hadn't read them, and I did go on and read some of the stuff. And apparently one of the women says that he did force himself. Or can I say that? I don't he forced her to her knees. An item. Maybe I don't understand the psychology of being a CEO or the possibilities that some you are so powerful no one would possibly injure you permanently. But I was my first thought was no one would do that. Apparently, he did that. And I don't know what kind of mental problem you've got that. You would trust. Your own safety forcing that. I just wouldn't. Well, I mean, that's a rapist smooth. That is you know, you're so this person is so scared and threatened that they wouldn't dare. So that's when I was sort of flip or dismissive about it. I guess I was thinking as a normal person. Who's like, I would never. But apparently, that's who this guy is because that's one of the allegations against him. She says he did that. Yep. In the workplace. It's not a pretty story and clearly people don't step down unless they've done something wrong. And they. You know, this is this is horrible. And I actually do feel bad for Julie. I think you know, you get married to someone and you think you know them. Well, then there's all this. I'm sure she does. And she knows part of them. Probably party shows are. Forces ladies to do stuff to him or uses manipulation or abuse in the workplace, that's horrible. It's absolutely horrible. You know, do they have anything to say about jewelry herself? No. That was all I saw. Okay. As far as you know, chilies out. Please don't take our show up for the love of God possible CEO's out there. Every day. And I just don't want to be. Thinking the same. I like having somewhere to go my own life..

"But most americans listen to samantha b or sara gilbert who's a daughter of roseanne on that show the shows was about diversity inclusion how about making people laugh how about this telling a good story how about keeping your politics out of entertainment how about occasionally as roseanne understood in eight louis she did understand this that there are millions of people out there who feel the culture has turned on them that hollywood literally hates them hates their guts so roseanne spoke to that slice of america which is a is a big one and it did well as a result it wasn't it wasn't a conservative show it just happened to portray one character who was fairly conservative who did come across as funny and fairly smart at times and a good mother so that's their idea of like of okay we showed you what we can do we put one character on a show who's conservative one character now that character is gone and we're supposed to stand up and down and cheer because you say you're for diversity you aren't for diversity you happen to fall in it fall into the luckiest place on earth where you were were you were tach to this roseanne barr character for for a season and you're gonna get a big payout because you have a contract where they're going to have to pay you out so sara gilbert is lucky okay she's not particularly talented but she's lucky as all get out because she had the opportunity to work on a show that actually was thank you very much obliterate.
