Hey robyn how you doing all right. The bridges has had such a classic vintage sound over. the years. You know really comes from a different era and on this new album. It still has roots in the past but he kind of mixes it up a bit. Yeah it's a. It's a slight departure. Little more on the Kind of the modern rb sound instead of the traditional rb sound so he spent two years jam nap this place called gold diggers bar hotel and recording studio off the fame Santa monica boulevard in los angeles for less about two years and basically he created a whole new kind of modern. Interview With Author, Sasha Issenberg
"Sasha is and joins us now. From santa monica california he is the author of several books including the sushi economy globalization and the making of a modern delicacy the victory lab the secret science of winning campaigns outpatients the astonishing new world of medical tourism and his new book the engagement america's quarter-century struggle over same sex marriage. Sasha thanks for being here thanks pamela. Let's start with something that probably not a lot of your readers will know but you know very well and i know which is that. This book was supposed to come out a full year ago. In june twenty twenty and it was one of those books that was delayed by the covid pandemic but maybe delayed the most. What was that like. It was tough so it got delayed three times in the last year. And i think some of that was in the spring. It was a marketing consideration that with bookstores closed and no live events. A lot of publishers held their books back and then it was supposed to come out last september. And by that point it was sort of a manufacturing problem as best i gathered. Publishers can actually get the books out of warehouses because people were sick. I learned the hard way that book publishing facilities are basically like meat. Packing plants with with wood pulp. So i had a lot set up last fall. And i had to put it all on hold and here i am must be a big relief if nothing else it is and you know. It was pretty cautious in writing this book of understanding that this was a topic where it was possible events in the news could affect it and tried to write it so that when it came out it would be current and i think there was some possibility that things can happen over the last year. That would change that dynamic and they really haven't in a significant way which is which is useful.

Double Date With Ted Danson & Mary Steenburgen
"We flew out to santa monica to visit. Ted danson and mary steenburgen. Their house is carved into the side of a hill. It's a craftsman style. Bungalow built in nineteen twenty two and it has what is called a living roof which is covered with greenery to fight off climate change. Ten mary decorated themselves is very relax and homey mostly. It was their warm connection to each other. That grabbed her attention from the start. This is fun. Yeah we've been so excited. We're really that you asked us. Well you came to mind immediately. Really people are always asking us. How did you. How are you married too long. And what i like in likes me. He's cute boys smells and that's a big deal so smell good. Sony's Obsession With Blockbusters Is Stirring Unrest Within PlayStation Empire
"Visual arts service. Group has been has long. Been the unsung hero of many hit playstation video games the san diego based operation helps finish off games designed at other sony studios with animation art or other content and development. But about three years ago. A handful of influential figures within the visual arts service group. They wanted to have more creative control and lead game direction rather than being supporting actors on popular. Titles such as spider man. Uncharted michael barr who founded the visual arts series group. In two thousand seven rooted. A a group of about thirty developers internally and from neighboring game studios to form a new development unit within sony. The idea was to expand upon some of the some of the company's most successful franchises in the team began working on a remake of the twenty thirteen. Hit the lasts less for the playstation five. Why why would this be what you go do well. We're about to get the answer. But never fully acknowledged the team's existence or gave them the funding and support needed to succeed in the highly competitive video game market. According to the people involved the studio never got its own name instead. Sony moved ownership of the last remake to its original creator naughty dog. The team's failure highlights the complex hierarchy of video game development and in particular sony's conservative approach to making games for the playstation five. The japanese conglomerate owns about a dozen studios across the world as part of its playstation studios label but in recent years it has prioritised games by its most successful developers studios such as santa monica california. Based naughty dog and amsterdam-based guerrilla games spend tens of millions of dollars to make games with the with the that the that the investments will pay off exponentially and they usually do hits including two thousand eighteen god of war in twenty twenty. Esports League Rundown
"Start this week over here and most beautiful place. On god's green earth in downtown santa monica with the l. c. s. aright where the grass is green and. The pain is over fifty. We are starting with our week. Five results here starting at the top of the table. We've got an interesting rundown for you in terms of standings and by interesting i mean this should come as absolutely zero surprise to anyone who's been falling for any amount of time here this year in first place cloud nine at ten and two tied for second we have. Tsm and one hundred thieves at eight and four fourth place as a three way. Tie to round out your playoff teams evil geniuses dignatories and team liquid all remain in control of their destiny immortals to entire games behind in seventh place. Fly quest down there at four and eight and eighth and tied for ninth place. We've got seal g and golden guardians. Who that's for the in terms of standings. Let's talk cloud nine top of the table. In how did they do this week. Nine had a banger of a weekend. I'm really really satisfied with how this team performed this weekend. Everyone is looking fantastic right now. Honestly perks has some absolutely popoff. Plays on yasuo in the blank. This weekend He was looking awesome blabber. Just absolutely runs train on one hundred thieves on olaf. He's still looking amazing. I honestly don't understand how this guy still getting. Olaf when champion pool is more like an ocean. I guess you know. It's kind of hard to ban out. Everyone right yeah and then you know they also had just a pretty good win vs golden guardians. This was a really really good week for c. Nine they displayed a a show of dominance that i think is important for them to show versus lower tier teams and upper tier teams like hundred thieves the takeaway from this weekend see nine looking fantastic. I'm happy with this team. And my favorite thing about this team this season so far is they have displayed the ability to play like everything they can play. All sorts of different team calms they can play all sorts of different styles and be super successful on it so lots to love from. Cnn radio man. I wonder what it's like to be a fan of a team. That's like the best in the region. Can you feel so good what it feels like to be yankees fan fan now recently. Hey man at least. I always tell myself no matter how bad things get. At least i'm not. Cgi got even fan. Just seal g actually entire org. at least you're as an entity the idea mostly. Yeah yeah oh yeah. I was just gonna say overall c nine great weekend moving on. Yeah and i think a key point here is they did go up against one. Hundred thieves created separation against a team. That's currently tied for second. They did in just such an incredible manner. It was like every single lane. One like blabber just played out of his mind perks actually styled on monday on the blank it was just such an awesome game. In addition to that there was actually a little not really an interview but ls during. I think it was a co starring. He was doing as well. Fudge seanang fudge came on just chatted back and forth with him a little bit and revealed that perks. Basically said yeah. It's just demonte. I could totally take leblanc into him and fucking popped off. I think he got a level. Three solo kill level three or level. Four to play a little vision. Game with perks had award kinda thwarted the whole thing and it cost him onto his life. Basically and the game like there's no way or less. Yeah that snowballed everything out of control so his brutal really really. Well played for nine showing that even if they were close in the standings. This matchup is just so nine favored. There's also been a lot of chatter specifically from people who are in the know that one hundred thieves has a major mental block against the nine. They absolutely hate playing against him. So little fun. Little tidbits for y'all there. All right seni- jumping down to. Let's talk about the two teams tied aid right now for second place. Tsm and hundred thieves. We'll start with the less fun. One which is of course hundred thieves. Who has kinda struggled a little bit throughout the course of this entire split. Not looking nearly as strong as i think we all would of hoped. Jack's talked me about their weekend. All right so other than the cloud nine game that we just touched on mcleod nine blew them out of the water. Hundred thieves mostly had a good weekend. They beat seattle g. They had a close call but they then recovered from their close call. Took control of the game back from seattle jian won the game Close calls is more of like they. Lucked out into a wake-up hopefully they don't make same kind of mistakes of leading finn. Just do ridiculous nar things when his team's losing miserably they literally flipped a to k gold lead into four k gold back. Yeah and flip within like eight minutes. Yeah it was stupid. That's nuts g. You can hear this hill shawn's voice because the game had it but from the perspective of hundred thieves like other than the one mistake that was such a huge swing the game. Well they played really well against dignatories capping the shit out of fate god and the rest of the team playing fine or or well depending on the player like demonte didn't have a great day in general. Don't they didn't have a great weekend in general. Let's be honest but then yeah the cloud nine game like to cut blown out in twenty four minutes. It was brutal you mentioned it was monte attempts to do a bush play like bait something to get away and that was the only thing like someday played without respect for fudge it all and got punished repeatedly for it like it was rough. It was really rough.
Metro is considering congestion pricing on these Los Angeles freeways
"Of congestion pricing, Metro's Joshua Schank says congestion pricing would charge people for driving on certain roads to ease traffic and move people around faster. What we've seen Around the world is that when congestion pricing has been implemented when it's been tried, it is not only proven effective, but it is proving popular on it. It stayed in place. Metro staff will be presenting four different plans for the test to the Transportation agencies board this month, and the board will likely settle on a site by this summer. The possible sites include the roads crossing the Santa Monica Mountains, the freeways and roads in downtown L. A and the 10 Freeway west of downtown. The news is brought to you by cutting dental Ah federal extension
"santa monica" Discussed on KFI AM 640
"Feces draws flies, and I think that's the point of you guys see? So if it was a rational set of leaders in Santa Monica, clearly they're not You ever Santa Monica let the businesses get destroyed during the riots last spring, right? They didn't. They didn't do anything to stop when Four Street businesses were getting all busted up. So now they're letting the homeless living the elevators like it's their apartment, and they're refusing to drag these people out and off the staircases in the hallways. And of course, the response from everybody involved in this is probably why he sued is basically not much I can do. It starts with something called the downtown Santa Monica Inc. D S. M, an Organization of axis of business district's advocate. I don't know what they're paid for this. They gotta CEO named Kathleen Rawson, who said, Well, you see our ambassadors in their bright teal T shirts. They act as the eyes and ears of downtown and for the police were constantly interfacing the businesses to help address issues related homelessness by the way. Any official who uses the word interface. You know there, it idiot. It's on Lee. Yeah, that that that's that's still be target. There's only one thing you do when there's a guy living in our parking garage elevator, a public parking garage elevator and they've defecated in the elevator. Is you a rest your arrest them. You arrest them for public defecation in a elevator that the public the taxpayers have paid for that slinky. That's the public elevator. That's not their private toilet. So here's the odd twist in the story after speaking to several members of Santa Monica Police departments homeless outreach unit Great they're doing a good job. He was out taking pictures. One day, John Ellie said They told him there are too many restrictions on how they interact with the homeless and they can only react if all of the elevators and dumps the rooms are locked at night. I don't know why that is, but they don't lock up at night because there's still people may need to use him, including the disabled so they can't lock them at night. That's the response. No. There is no such rule that says you can allow people to live in elevators and bring all their garbage and all their defecation and all their needles. There's no such thing. That See that's the thing this is This is what makes me crazy about the media. What with newspaper? Is this? The Santa Monica Daily Post and them written by Brennan Dixon. Well, your journalist of the year Brandon Dixon. Really, What is the law that says Ah City can't eject people who are fouling an elevator with their own feces. Response also was The jails are full. We can't put him in there because of covert 19 and the shelters their fault. They can't go there either. Well, they don't stay in the elevator when people have to use them to go to go to the stores, But it's winter and it's cold. They're looking for a warm place. It's that was another response. That's garbage. That's a health hazard. It Z a danger to people if you are, If you're a young woman you want you're gonna walk in to an elevator with a crazy guy. Who has who has up a shopping cart filled with junk it he stole and he's got needles sticking out of his arms to see this is the thing All they do is they give you these weird bureaucratic excuses? There are full of garbage. All right. These people are crazy. There's crazy is the homeless people who are who are living in the elevators. Except they're bureaucrats, and they're making six figure salaries, sucking that tax money. They're crazy people. No. No society in the history of the world allowed this sort of thing before no society. The answer is always the same. Open up the institutions. We need to open up. What shames the laws get these people taken away and get them the help they need, whether it's drug, alcohol or mental illness or all three. It zit. The only way this is going to go. I'm not going to read any more stories on all. I think the only times had another one with the bite administration. There's hope for the homeless. I get at it. There's no hope for the homeless because you don't want to send them to the to the therapy that they need. Treatment that they need they need. They need drug alcohol treatment. They need mental health treatment. Severe mental health treatment That would last for months, maybe years. You don't want to do that. So you're letting him crap all over the ground. And and throw their needles around and that crazy and hurt people. You people are insane. You people are wrong. It's immoral. What you're doing to the taxpayers. It's a moral what you're doing to the homeless people. You're dreadful human beings. I think you're making six figures off this mess. Don't forget what I have, like an infectious disease expert coming out after four o'clock. Dr. Monica Gandhi about how banning outdoor dining may have made things worse. In California, right? Outdoor dining was banned. Like crapping in a public elevators, not Oh, and that's what good thing you brought that up. Because in this article, Gianelli says that he goes. You're making us wear mask. If all these mandates with the covert 19, you can't take care of this problem. How do you know the homeless guy? This Vancouver dying? How is this not a health hazard What infectious diseases during his feces. The hell is wrong with the people who run Santa Monica. What is wrong with them? Where did they get that They have another virus must have infected their brains. Hey, John and Kate can find Deborah Marquez did officials say there are.

Interview With Ryan Herz
"Well did afternoon everyone and welcome to another podcast from frames magazine my name is scott olsen and today i am talking to a member of the frames community ryan hers. Orion's work is all over our group. It is engaging it is provocative. It's the kind of work that you look at. And you're you're going to have a response to it. Personally i find it absolutely thrilling. An end fascinating ryan good afternoon. How're you doing pretty good. how are you. i'm doing great. You're out in santa monica california. Did tell me what you see out your window. What kind of day is it out there. It's pretty much seventy five degrees Another perfect Or another shitty day embarrass dice. All right well. I i envy you that here on the planes as it's gray and cold and snow ian winners coming in. You began your photography career when you were twelve years old and you came across an old range finder in a drawer. Tell me that story. Tell me how you got started in photography. Yeah i think actually it was more like it was about ten and i found an old contacts range finder in a drawer. Not being used. And i think it had been forgotten and somehow i latched onto it and i'm not quite sure how i learn to use it but i did and then a few years later there was a huge fire. One of those big california brushfires in my neighborhood. And i somehow got it together and took very poor pictures of the fire and the planes and i thought that was great in the photo bug was planted right then never left me. What what is it at age. Twelve or thirteen over that sent you out to photograph the fires versus. Just run away head you already been smitten a little bit by capturing images or what was the. What was the motivation there. I'm seventy three. That's a long time ago. There was always something about getting the images. I remembered i have one cute picture of me in my cub scout uniform with the context around my neck. My cub scout had turned backwards. So i don't know what pretended you were taking pictures. That bill was getting in the way where you go. that's right. we started the whole movement. There you go there you go. You also mentioned that. You took a two day seminar when you were in college with eugene smith that taught you as you claim the appreciation of the photo essay. Well okay i mean. Obviously we know what photographs are. What do you mean by the photo essay well especially with gene. Smith's work at life magazine. Was that former. You got to use eight or ten pictures. Basically to tell a story not a book nada along scale project but something you would go into for probably a few weeks and try and get eight or ten pictures. That convinced it all now. In his case obviously he was a master at it and obviously each composition was better than the last and medium and talking to him a little bit and observing him. Gave me a lot of input. Into what i want to do in the future and also what. The possible costs were because this is about nineteen seventy he had been fighting with various editors for basically his career and it was to the point then when he had recorded. I don't know how he'd recorded. But he ed recordings of his conversations with various editors and how they didn't understand what he was doing at the time and he actually broke into tears at one point in front of about thirty five forty people other points he was brilliant and other point see was certainly technically a master. So that was very insightful. I thought he was a rather troubled man at the time. And i had hopes for his future and lo and behold a year later he started minamata which obviously was a large-scale book project that was very very successful in lead to some of his best images. There's a good lesson. They're on both sides of success and working through the the struggle when people don't appreciate the kind of stuff that we're trying to get out there. I don't think that's unique to photography. I think musicians. I think writers. I think dancers all when they come up against a border are gonna meet resistance Border is is there because of some evolution of the form hasn't quite grown that direction. I bring that up. Because i am looking at your project called unseens which you subtitle street. Photography in the age of photoshop street photography is supposed to be the very real the documentary the untouched. And here you are really playing with that form so tell me about surrealism in street photography telling me about unseens. Where did it come from. What are you doing. Well in terms of surrealism. I've always considered myself and have a healthy dose of that. And i think a lot of the street photographers in france. Were surrealist their hearts. Certainly critize and man ray were surrealist and it was a thread that went through everything back then in paris at the time when everybody found the like and that was really the birth of the street. Photography movement my estimation anyway Unseens are a little different. They're not different than street photography in that they are not planned. They are not set up

Now but There's a reason why i'm not there for the winters and this is definitely a good place to be so i'll take the cold. Yeah absolutely. I feel like i'm really turning a corner down here into panga with the help of the community i've mapped out several real key important ridge lines and canyons between here and santa monica. And now i'm i'm really Experiencing asunto euphoria. Because i'm starting to kind of make connections between the two and i got lost on a rotten single-track that lead nowhere yesterday but also found. Just this rad single-track connector that i just. It's a point of discovery of new areas. That i really love when you've got the basics down and you can start digging into some of the lesser known trails. Yeah i'm starting to get that similar. Sense of familiarity with my surroundings have been here only for a couple of weeks. And i had done some writing here before but not much information's on it in the Again you know in the santa cruz mountains. Just north of skaggs point and so. I'm doing a lot of writing kinda to the west of there towards the coast backup. Then yesterday. i wrote king's ridge up in Outside of grenville. Unbelievably gorgeous out there. the grasshopper what is it the super sweetwater and the old caz racists go through their train is unreal and we were on the road the whole time so that i know there's a lot of good dirt but The vistas just unbelievable. Yeah and frankly cinema. County roads are often worse than the trails in my ex. Well i was writing six fifty. So i was. I was in good shape but one of our one of the two people i was with we were riding in a socially distant way. Everyone into we'll be talking about that in a moment One of the people we were with only have thirty. Two's and was definitely feeling the extra you impact and so on. So i was glad to be on fat rubber. Yeah exactly and you reference the grasshopper series. I had miguel crawford the founder of that series. He's been doing it for twenty years Which is kind of crazy Twenty one years. Now i guess and you can imagine what the equipment was like back in the day and in our interview he kinda often joked about. You know you just as soon see a mountain bike on the start line as you would proper road bike and everything in between over the years. In fact one of the people i was with at their brakes. Were starting to fail because it's so steep and fast and so on that just The the compounds in their breaks was seemingly anomalous classifying. Or something where they're just losing breaking power at the extremes kind of sketch. I didn't have those problems. Fortunately and i won't name names in terms of who's brake pads. They were either but well. This is great. I mean i feel like these conversations and the discovery process. We're going through in. Our new locations is on point with what i wanted to talk about today. Yep yep Before we jump into that because it will be a jumping off point. Do also want to talk about a listener email and dialogue. I've been having with the member of the community named silas. He brought up something that i've been grappling with someone. New to an area without local friends is just kovic safe riding and obviously did an interview with dave from unpaved about the event they did and all the changes they made to make covid safe but for for all of us on the day to day we've got to think about how to ride as covid safe individuals and is it safe to ride with others and what techniques can we do and what i recommended to silas is since neither you nor i are experts on this is let's let's put in the community forum and let's have a discussion and see how we can provide information to one another and have a dialogue about how individuals are comfortable in terms of writing with others. Today yeah and it's certainly not something that we are qualified to discuss ourselves You know we're not epidemiologists. We are not medical professionals and so on norway claiming that you know we have actually if we have anyone in the community Who has that sort of expertise can point to articles and so on This would be the channel To contribute to the conversation. Because ultimately i think for all of us including the experts that there is a this is like an an ongoing iterative optimization function. We're trying to find the right balance between you know. Mental health comes through social connection and that we are safe from A disease a pandemic that know is i mean. It's not like ebola so it doesn't have that extreme seriousness but it is serious enough especially potentially to other people that we might transmit to where we wanna take precautions. Striking that balances is something. We're all trying to figure out.
ESPN to cut 500 jobs as pandemic erodes revenues
"Virus pandemic and new impact. It's having on one of our state's biggest industries. Santa Monica based Studio Lions Gate and ESPN, which is owned by Disney, are the latest to announced job cuts in the entertainment business case. Your W's Anna Scott has more Lions Gate says it's laying off 15% of the staff in its film division. That's a loss of almost 70 jobs. With almost half the country's movie Theatres closed. It's hard to release big films, and that's been a hit for the company's movie division. Peters have been shuttered in L A since March. Even before the pandemic streaming services were competing for movie audiences. Now direct to consumer streaming is cutting into traditional TV sports to Disney is laying 300 people off from ESPN and leaving 200 open jobs at the sports network unfilled. On top of a changing business model. Many sports games have been canceled or cut back during the pandemic for the California

"Of Santa Monica that has seen unrest this afternoon it started as a peaceful protest with hundreds of people gathered along ocean Boulevard between Colorado and Broadway there were police officers there a police presence obviously there as well and then we saw some looting happening the looting began on Colorado near third street promenade in Santa Monica place shopping center over there some high end stores the vans shoe store we saw other places that were being looted as well and now we're seeing some fires break out in Santa Monica is well there was a car fire near Santa Monica city hall near main street and Pico that fire has been extinguished lamonica fire officials were also hearing reports of another fire at fourth and Santa Monica Boulevard this is a Sakae sushi place along this is just about a block north black rather a block east of third street promenade a fire there that apparently has been extinguished as well but some damage reports we're hearing reports of looting at the vons on Lincoln Boulevard this is Lincoln and Broadway that we're seeing blow the possibilities of looting going on there as well and again just a bit of a a chaotic situation in Santa Monica at this moment peaceful protests earlier today that have turned into unrest and looting that we're seeing right now as I mentioned a couple of fires that have been extinguished so far we're trying to get some folks on the line to talk more about what we're seeing and all the while we're waiting for a press conference coming up from the Santa Monica police department I believe we're going to hear from Cynthia Renaud who is the police chief of the city of Santa Monica so we'll have that for you as soon as we see them step to the podium in just a moment to stick around for that as we continue with the information here on KCRW against you could take us here five forty one and we break into the programming obviously to give you all the information you need if you're anywhere within the city limits of Santa Monica number one you should be home because there's a curfew number two if you're trying to get home I would certainly avoid at all costs the the area around downtown Santa Monica this is from PCH all the way as far east as Lincoln and even farther east than that we're seeing protesters on the street but we're also seeing some unrest in the looting that's happening at several stores along not only Santa Monica Boulevard but also Wilshire Boulevard a drug store that was being looted as well on Wilshire near fourth and it even farther east than that on fifth sixth seventh streets in Santa Monica there's a curfew the took affected four o'clock that will last through six o'clock tomorrow morning there's also a curfew for the entire county of Los Angeles that will take place starting eighteen minutes from now six o'clock tonight the entire county that includes the cities of Los Angeles and Long Beach and Santa Monica and everywhere else this curfew is in effect from six o'clock tonight until six o'clock tomorrow morning because of the unrest a county wide curfew unless you need medical care or you have to go to an essential job county officials say you should stay home there are protesters gathered in several locations throughout the region curfew or not we're seeing protests in in Long Beach at this hour marching in Long Beach a city of Long Beach we're also seeing some protests happening seemingly again peaceful protests happening in downtown Los Angeles but there is a National Guard presence outside we heard from KCRW's Benjamin Gottlieb who are told us just a few minutes ago that there was a National Guard presence of guardsmen who were standing and and trying to fortify making sure that nobody breached the entrance to Los Angeles city hall over there by First Street and of course just at the end of Grant Park so there are a lot of moving parts happening this evening we are hoping keeping fingers crossed that things calm down as a curfew takes effect in just a few minutes throughout the entire county of Los Angeles the city of Santa Monica as I mentioned still the scene of a very large peaceful protest the continues I'm being told that the the ocean up to Montana that the crowd is starting to dissipate but again we have seen that crowd turn into not that crowd the peaceful crowd I want to I want to delineate obviously but there are two things happening at once here number one there are peaceful protesters that are on the scene in Santa Monica in Long Beach in downtown Los Angeles and then another thing that's happening is there are bad actors in this taking advantage of the situation and going in and looting and perhaps even starting fires in some states in some places in these neighborhoods so we want to make sure that we we characterize this fairly that there are peaceful protests and that there are looters right now they're taking advantage of the situation and the police officers are trying to take care of the situation to make sure that the the peace holds but at the same time we have a we have some unrest happening as well and so you get the skirmishes you get police who have been firing rubber bullets to make sure that everybody stays back and rightly or wrongly that is happening tear gas being thrown as well one of our reporters reportedly was was fired on yesterday for with with the rubber bullets so we have a lot going on in LA there are a lot of different narratives happening right now but this is what's happening right now peaceful protests that have like become perhaps unrest in many parts of Los Angeles I'm going to just say we have somebody on the line right now and I'm hoping that that's where we're going Emily Keren as a reporter okay we don't have somebody on the line but hopefully we will in just in just a moment I will reiterate that we have a lot happening right now in Santa Monica we have a reporter on the scene they're from our US friends over KPCC or other public radio station in Los Angeles NPR affiliate we're going to talk to him just a moment as soon as we get her on the line we have KCRW's Benjamin Gottlieb was on route to Santa Monica to give us more information there and all the while we're waiting on a press conference from Santa Monica police officials and the police chief Cynthia Renaud you heard a few minutes ago before we broke into our programming we had KNBC channel four that you heard the reporter there saying there was a report of a a police officer in Santa Monica being shot in the foot we're still trying to confirm that.

"At the Santa Monica farmer's market here's Gillian Ferguson this is Gillian Ferguson with the market report it is a very wed Wednesday here in Santa Monica this week and I'm talking to Abraham and let those who is one of the chefs was brave the rain to come to the market this week Abraham is the chef de cuisine at Nora in west Hollywood on Santa Monica and Abraham I noticed you have some persimmons in your car today what are you going to be doing with them so the persimmons are going to be used on our pork chop we try to change the free seasonally where pickling them so basically putting them in a little bit of water sugar and sherry vinegar we try to keep it nice and fresh we don't like to be away from the produce we like that kind of let it speak for itself we're also putting it in a seasonal grain ball or a seasonal fruit bowl as we call it kind of the two methods right now they were using with persimmon okay so when you're talking about the pickled persimmons are they lately pickle the quick pick colors is something that takes a few weeks to prepare no it's a quick because soon as he gets into the restaurant you know we clean them up have on my serrated go and then the cuts of over the picked whatever for similar Serapis and they'll cold pickle it really quick it's other persimmons are done for the day everything's fresh we check in the next day for consistency but if they're too soft well having depression so just depends okay see one a little bit of texture on the yeah you want a little bit of texture you want a little bit of by you don't want to give anybody a mushy pickle yeah yeah that's right nothing worse than a machine tackle and so how does the the sweetness and that the sourness of the pickle sort of pair with the pork chop with the pork chop I mean think about like a peach peaches sweet but it's also slightly sour so the acidity kind of plays off with the pork chop flavor we marinated in a rose merry a little bit of chili flakes olive oil a little bit of garlic so we let them in a for awhile and it kind of plays a nice little game of like sweet savory sour try to hit all those benchmarks for the dish sounds delicious and I assume that you're using the foo you persimmons the ones that are hard yeah we're using the for you per Simmons Odyssey that high kia are going to be a little softer we're doing a couple experiments right now where were letting on just a super right so it's pretty much as soon as you open it up it's insane jelly pretty much so we're playing around with that concept right now all right well thank you so much this sounds delicious all right thank you that was Abraham limos the chef de cuisine at Nora in west Hollywood he's been telling us what to do with those for you persimmons one of the farmers who grows percent men's and brings them to the market is Laura Ramirez of JJ's loaned out our ranch many people know Laura from her almost year round avocados that she brings to the market but in the fall you have for Simmons as well how many varieties are you bringing to the market these days all my gosh well and grow a lot of different varieties but the main Fridays I bring to the market ARFU use giant to use and hi cheers which are so sweet and taste like ball and all kinds of sin in many goodness so walk us through the difference because the foo use you want to eat hard right and then the high G. as which you were just talking about you want to wait until they're almost falling apart I mean the way you sell them it's like in a Cup because if you were to sell them any other way they would just fall apart on you yeah they have to be like a water balloon are you'll hate me because your mouth a pucker up and you'll discuss me out never won a person again and you know I always say me I like to have a little cocktail now and then so I like my for Simmons with some dark rum on top and some cram freshen old so delicious and it just reminds me of thanksgiving and Christmas and its all the goodies that sound so good so do you just cut them open at the top and pour the run right over to squeeze them out in a bowl while I was doing anyway you want but I like it that way and I also like frozen frozen like a survey is really delicious that's really my favorite way to eat them and then you can have me around to you can freeze it let it defrost a little bit but the rom all read or brandy or whatever whatever cocktail you want you know I'll call as always enhances the flavor it makes it taste like a pumpkin pie I learned that trick from you years ago and every year I put a few had G. as in my freezer add me bad so Laurie you also have this other variety which we don't really see very often in the stores sometimes are called chocolate for Simmons I know you have a very limited variety but they're so unique I wonder if you could explain what a chocolate persimmon is exactly well a chocolate persimmon there's all kinds of different varieties that are a little bit darker inside there's like something called a cinnamon the Maru there's a chocolate persimmon there's a coffee cake and a lot of times you have to educate people on the inside is a little bit darker inside or they think you're selling them rotten fruit you know but once they taste it they know it's just terrific and it's it really does taste.
