Interview With Ryan Herz
"Well did afternoon everyone and welcome to another podcast from frames magazine my name is scott olsen and today i am talking to a member of the frames community ryan hers. Orion's work is all over our group. It is engaging it is provocative. It's the kind of work that you look at. And you're you're going to have a response to it. Personally i find it absolutely thrilling. An end fascinating ryan good afternoon. How're you doing pretty good. how are you. i'm doing great. You're out in santa monica california. Did tell me what you see out your window. What kind of day is it out there. It's pretty much seventy five degrees Another perfect Or another shitty day embarrass dice. All right well. I i envy you that here on the planes as it's gray and cold and snow ian winners coming in. You began your photography career when you were twelve years old and you came across an old range finder in a drawer. Tell me that story. Tell me how you got started in photography. Yeah i think actually it was more like it was about ten and i found an old contacts range finder in a drawer. Not being used. And i think it had been forgotten and somehow i latched onto it and i'm not quite sure how i learn to use it but i did and then a few years later there was a huge fire. One of those big california brushfires in my neighborhood. And i somehow got it together and took very poor pictures of the fire and the planes and i thought that was great in the photo bug was planted right then never left me. What what is it at age. Twelve or thirteen over that sent you out to photograph the fires versus. Just run away head you already been smitten a little bit by capturing images or what was the. What was the motivation there. I'm seventy three. That's a long time ago. There was always something about getting the images. I remembered i have one cute picture of me in my cub scout uniform with the context around my neck. My cub scout had turned backwards. So i don't know what pretended you were taking pictures. That bill was getting in the way where you go. that's right. we started the whole movement. There you go there you go. You also mentioned that. You took a two day seminar when you were in college with eugene smith that taught you as you claim the appreciation of the photo essay. Well okay i mean. Obviously we know what photographs are. What do you mean by the photo essay well especially with gene. Smith's work at life magazine. Was that former. You got to use eight or ten pictures. Basically to tell a story not a book nada along scale project but something you would go into for probably a few weeks and try and get eight or ten pictures. That convinced it all now. In his case obviously he was a master at it and obviously each composition was better than the last and medium and talking to him a little bit and observing him. Gave me a lot of input. Into what i want to do in the future and also what. The possible costs were because this is about nineteen seventy he had been fighting with various editors for basically his career and it was to the point then when he had recorded. I don't know how he'd recorded. But he ed recordings of his conversations with various editors and how they didn't understand what he was doing at the time and he actually broke into tears at one point in front of about thirty five forty people other points he was brilliant and other point see was certainly technically a master. So that was very insightful. I thought he was a rather troubled man at the time. And i had hopes for his future and lo and behold a year later he started minamata which obviously was a large-scale book project that was very very successful in lead to some of his best images. There's a good lesson. They're on both sides of success and working through the the struggle when people don't appreciate the kind of stuff that we're trying to get out there. I don't think that's unique to photography. I think musicians. I think writers. I think dancers all when they come up against a border are gonna meet resistance Border is is there because of some evolution of the form hasn't quite grown that direction. I bring that up. Because i am looking at your project called unseens which you subtitle street. Photography in the age of photoshop street photography is supposed to be the very real the documentary the untouched. And here you are really playing with that form so tell me about surrealism in street photography telling me about unseens. Where did it come from. What are you doing. Well in terms of surrealism. I've always considered myself and have a healthy dose of that. And i think a lot of the street photographers in france. Were surrealist their hearts. Certainly critize and man ray were surrealist and it was a thread that went through everything back then in paris at the time when everybody found the like and that was really the birth of the street. Photography movement my estimation anyway Unseens are a little different. They're not different than street photography in that they are not planned. They are not set up

I can't complain My family's back in boston. I'm not sure what the weather is right. Now but There's a reason why i'm not there for the winters and this is definitely a good place to be so i'll take the cold. Yeah absolutely. I feel like i'm really turning a corner down here into panga with the help of the community i've mapped out several real key important ridge lines and canyons between here and santa monica. And now i'm i'm really Experiencing asunto euphoria. Because i'm starting to kind of make connections between the two and i got lost on a rotten single-track that lead nowhere yesterday but also found. Just this rad single-track connector that i just. It's a point of discovery of new areas. That i really love when you've got the basics down and you can start digging into some of the lesser known trails. Yeah i'm starting to get that similar. Sense of familiarity with my surroundings have been here only for a couple of weeks. And i had done some writing here before but not much information's on it in the Again you know in the santa cruz mountains. Just north of skaggs point and so. I'm doing a lot of writing kinda to the west of there towards the coast backup. Then yesterday. i wrote king's ridge up in Outside of grenville. Unbelievably gorgeous out there. the grasshopper what is it the super sweetwater and the old caz racists go through their train is unreal and we were on the road the whole time so that i know there's a lot of good dirt but The vistas just unbelievable. Yeah and frankly cinema. County roads are often worse than the trails in my ex. Well i was writing six fifty. So i was. I was in good shape but one of our one of the two people i was with we were riding in a socially distant way. Everyone into we'll be talking about that in a moment One of the people we were with only have thirty. Two's and was definitely feeling the extra you impact and so on. So i was glad to be on fat rubber. Yeah exactly and you reference the grasshopper series. I had miguel crawford the founder of that series. He's been doing it for twenty years Which is kind of crazy Twenty one years. Now i guess and you can imagine what the equipment was like back in the day and in our interview he kinda often joked about. You know you just as soon see a mountain bike on the start line as you would proper road bike and everything in between over the years. In fact one of the people i was with at their brakes. Were starting to fail because it's so steep and fast and so on that just The the compounds in their breaks was seemingly anomalous classifying. Or something where they're just losing breaking power at the extremes kind of sketch. I didn't have those problems. Fortunately and i won't name names in terms of who's brake pads. They were either but well. This is great. I mean i feel like these conversations and the discovery process. We're going through in. Our new locations is on point with what i wanted to talk about today. Yep yep Before we jump into that because it will be a jumping off point. Do also want to talk about a listener email and dialogue. I've been having with the member of the community named silas. He brought up something that i've been grappling with someone. New to an area without local friends is just kovic safe riding and obviously did an interview with dave from unpaved about the event they did and all the changes they made to make covid safe but for for all of us on the day to day we've got to think about how to ride as covid safe individuals and is it safe to ride with others and what techniques can we do and what i recommended to silas is since neither you nor i are experts on this is let's let's put in the community forum and let's have a discussion and see how we can provide information to one another and have a dialogue about how individuals are comfortable in terms of writing with others. Today yeah and it's certainly not something that we are qualified to discuss ourselves You know we're not epidemiologists. We are not medical professionals and so on norway claiming that you know we have actually if we have anyone in the community Who has that sort of expertise can point to articles and so on This would be the channel To contribute to the conversation. Because ultimately i think for all of us including the experts that there is a this is like an an ongoing iterative optimization function. We're trying to find the right balance between you know. Mental health comes through social connection and that we are safe from A disease a pandemic that know is i mean. It's not like ebola so it doesn't have that extreme seriousness but it is serious enough especially potentially to other people that we might transmit to where we wanna take precautions. Striking that balances is something. We're all trying to figure out.

also seeing some protests happening seemingly again peaceful protests happening in downtown Los Angeles but there is a National Guard presence outside we heard from KCRW's Benjamin Gottlieb who are told us just a few minutes ago that there was a National Guard presence of guardsmen who were standing and and trying to fortify making sure that nobody breached the entrance to Los Angeles city hall over there by First Street and of course just at the end of Grant Park so there are a lot of moving parts happening this evening we are hoping keeping fingers crossed that things calm down as a curfew takes effect in just a few minutes throughout the entire county of Los Angeles the city of Santa Monica as I mentioned still the scene of a very large peaceful protest the continues I'm being told that the the ocean up to Montana that the crowd is starting to dissipate but again we have seen that crowd turn into not that crowd the peaceful crowd I want to I want to delineate obviously but there are two things happening at once here number one there are peaceful protesters that are on the scene in Santa Monica in Long Beach in downtown Los Angeles and then another thing that's happening is there are bad actors in this taking advantage of the situation and going in and looting and perhaps even starting fires in some states in some places in these neighborhoods so we want to make sure that we we characterize this fairly that there are peaceful protests and that there are looters right now they're taking advantage of the situation and the police officers are trying to take care of the situation to make sure that the the peace holds but at the same time we have a we have some unrest happening as well and so you get the skirmishes you get police who have been firing rubber bullets to make sure that everybody stays back and rightly or wrongly that is happening tear gas being thrown as well one of our reporters reportedly was was fired on yesterday for with with the rubber bullets so we have a lot going on in LA there are a lot of different narratives happening right now but this is what's happening right now peaceful protests that have like become perhaps unrest in many parts of Los Angeles I'm going to just say we have somebody on the line right now and I'm hoping that that's where we're going Emily Keren as a reporter okay we don't have somebody on the line but hopefully we will in just in just a moment I will reiterate that we have a lot happening right now in Santa Monica we have a reporter on the scene they're from our US friends over KPCC or other public radio station in Los Angeles NPR affiliate we're going to talk to him just a moment as soon as we get her on the line we have KCRW's Benjamin Gottlieb was on route to Santa Monica to give us more information there and all the while we're waiting on a press conference from Santa Monica police officials and the police chief Cynthia Renaud you heard a few minutes ago before we broke into our programming we had KNBC channel four that you heard the reporter there saying there was a report of a a police officer in Santa Monica being shot in the foot we're still trying to confirm that.

"At the Santa Monica farmer's market here's Gillian Ferguson this is Gillian Ferguson with the market report it is a very wed Wednesday here in Santa Monica this week and I'm talking to Abraham and let those who is one of the chefs was brave the rain to come to the market this week Abraham is the chef de cuisine at Nora in west Hollywood on Santa Monica and Abraham I noticed you have some persimmons in your car today what are you going to be doing with them so the persimmons are going to be used on our pork chop we try to change the free seasonally where pickling them so basically putting them in a little bit of water sugar and sherry vinegar we try to keep it nice and fresh we don't like to be away from the produce we like that kind of let it speak for itself we're also putting it in a seasonal grain ball or a seasonal fruit bowl as we call it kind of the two methods right now they were using with persimmon okay so when you're talking about the pickled persimmons are they lately pickle the quick pick colors is something that takes a few weeks to prepare no it's a quick because soon as he gets into the restaurant you know we clean them up have on my serrated go and then the cuts of over the picked whatever for similar Serapis and they'll cold pickle it really quick it's other persimmons are done for the day everything's fresh we check in the next day for consistency but if they're too soft well having depression so just depends okay see one a little bit of texture on the yeah you want a little bit of texture you want a little bit of by you don't want to give anybody a mushy pickle yeah yeah that's right nothing worse than a machine tackle and so how does the the sweetness and that the sourness of the pickle sort of pair with the pork chop with the pork chop I mean think about like a peach peaches sweet but it's also slightly sour so the acidity kind of plays off with the pork chop flavor we marinated in a rose merry a little bit of chili flakes olive oil a little bit of garlic so we let them in a for awhile and it kind of plays a nice little game of like sweet savory sour try to hit all those benchmarks for the dish sounds delicious and I assume that you're using the foo you persimmons the ones that are hard yeah we're using the for you per Simmons Odyssey that high kia are going to be a little softer we're doing a couple experiments right now where were letting on just a super right so it's pretty much as soon as you open it up it's insane jelly pretty much so we're playing around with that concept right now all right well thank you so much this sounds delicious all right thank you that was Abraham limos the chef de cuisine at Nora in west Hollywood he's been telling us what to do with those for you persimmons one of the farmers who grows percent men's and brings them to the market is Laura Ramirez of JJ's loaned out our ranch many people know Laura from her almost year round avocados that she brings to the market but in the fall you have for Simmons as well how many varieties are you bringing to the market these days all my gosh well and grow a lot of different varieties but the main Fridays I bring to the market ARFU use giant to use and hi cheers which are so sweet and taste like ball and all kinds of sin in many goodness so walk us through the difference because the foo use you want to eat hard right and then the high G. as which you were just talking about you want to wait until they're almost falling apart I mean the way you sell them it's like in a Cup because if you were to sell them any other way they would just fall apart on you yeah they have to be like a water balloon are you'll hate me because your mouth a pucker up and you'll discuss me out never won a person again and you know I always say me I like to have a little cocktail now and then so I like my for Simmons with some dark rum on top and some cram freshen old so delicious and it just reminds me of thanksgiving and Christmas and its all the goodies that sound so good so do you just cut them open at the top and pour the run right over to squeeze them out in a bowl while I was doing anyway you want but I like it that way and I also like frozen frozen like a survey is really delicious that's really my favorite way to eat them and then you can have me around to you can freeze it let it defrost a little bit but the rom all read or brandy or whatever whatever cocktail you want you know I'll call as always enhances the flavor it makes it taste like a pumpkin pie I learned that trick from you years ago and every year I put a few had G. as in my freezer add me bad so Laurie you also have this other variety which we don't really see very often in the stores sometimes are called chocolate for Simmons I know you have a very limited variety but they're so unique I wonder if you could explain what a chocolate persimmon is exactly well a chocolate persimmon there's all kinds of different varieties that are a little bit darker inside there's like something called a cinnamon the Maru there's a chocolate persimmon there's a coffee cake and a lot of times you have to educate people on the inside is a little bit darker inside or they think you're selling them rotten fruit you know but once they taste it they know it's just terrific and it's it really does taste.

"Life for San in Santa Monica, which got hit with with a lot of water, really fast. Pete begins. Our in depth team coverage for almost an hour. It was coming down at a rate. Probably at least a half an inch an hour and gutters. Here. They just absolutely overflow that you had a half a dozen intersections that I went through in everywhere from marina del Rey up into Santa Monica where this anywhere from two to ten inches of water in the runoff just overwhelming. The ability of the storm drains to take it off the streets people slowing down especially after they hit a puddle six to eight inches. Deep at twenty five miles an hour and water goes twenty five to thirty feet in the air, people cleared Santa Monica beach completely. There was concerns about lightning possibly endangering people out there. Fast look at both the Santa Monica pier. And the beaches themselves showed no one out there and one other thing in the streets of Santa Monica, normally, regardless of the weather, you see people on scooters on a little lime or bird scooters. Not now, it's too wet reporting live in Santa Monica on Demetrio, KNX, ten seventy NewsRadio. Meanwhile, the storm is bringing down rocks and mud on PCH and Malibu live. Now, the KNX ten seventy Craig Fichtner he is near point Mugu state park. Several different markers along PCH show people who live in the area can get through. But otherwise, there's reason for these closures I saw this one area here new point near park where there's over. Well, this incredible flood floodwater they have a couple of tractors. Cal trans does. They're scooping it into a truck hauling the dirt away trying to clear the road. They did this in the last series of storms, and they did it successfully. So we expect PCH will reopen at some point from this really bad spot here your point Mugu state park. But if it's going to take some time, there's still light rainfall coming down the sky heavy with cloud cover, and there's a we told a little bit of a break in the storm that will be coming. And that will be a big help right now. It is still a mission one job here to get all of this cleared away. There's just again an incredible amount of mud on the road on this part of reporting live in Malibu break signal. Can't x ten seventy NewsRadio. Let's head further east. Now mandatory evacuations are in effect for portions the holy fire burn area and the lake L. Schnorr area. But people many people in the area say they're staying put we continue our team coverage with KNX ten seventy s Margaret Carrero. Margaret are you with us? Okay. We'll try and get back to Margaret momentarily as you heard. The rain is hitting parts of southern California. Very hard with us live now Weather Channel senior meteorologist got Larry Maher, Scott. Hey, thanks, Chris and actually pretty good thunderstorm going on right now over that holy scar bird area. Holy fire. Burn area. Moving on across Orange County into the east into the southeast. Moderate rain all across much of southern L A county up in the southeast Ventura County. Heaviest rain right now extends from San Fernando all the way down to Long Beach and Huntington beach and Newport Beach moving onto the northeast quite a lightning show today, especially out on the beach boy at times earlier today a couple of hours ago, we had close to one hundred strikes in in an hour's period of time at Venice beach Santa Monica pier area of back edge of the rain is moving towards Malibu. Now, we've got one area of heavier weather, just south of Malibu. I think that clips Malibu in the next forty five minutes or so and in the back edge of the rain will be moving across the Wolsey burned scar and onto the northeast we catch a break here tonight and tomorrow, the big brother comes in Saturday. We could double these rainfall. Totals early Saturday. Chris. All right. Thank you, Scott. We've reestablished contact with KNX ten seventy s Margaret Carrero. She's in the holy fire. Burn area near lake Elsinore. Margaret, Chris, I can tell you. There has not been any rain falling out here just yet. But it is to come. Although I can also tell you that in the last fifteen to twenty minutes. The winds have picked up a little bit out. Here. Have also kind of just been roaming around the evacuation areas. I have seen Cal fire crews making the rounds out here while local police as well as sheriff deputies they've been going door to door the last couple of hours reminding residents, they should evacuate. I was told by one of the officers out here though about ninety percent of the people have decided to stick it out. Robert is one of them because he told me he's prepared. That goes around behind our property and diverts it around to the vacant lot and not into grand. So..

"At the beach in Santa Monica, we're going to take a closer look at what's happening there. Joining us on the KCBS ring central Newsline is George Leonard chief science. Scientist for the ocean conservancy, which is responsible for the Santa Monica cleanup. Thanks so much for joining us this morning. Hi, kim. A pleasure to be here. We've got a traffic jam on the beach down here in Santa Monica with hundreds of people turning out today. Well, that's so do these efforts make a dent in coastal trash. You bet they do we've been organizing international coastal cleanup for over thirty years now and over that time something like two hundred and fifty million pounds of garbage including most of that being plastic has been removed from the from the world's teacher. So yeah, every every individual counseling it adds up to some really big numbers. So what can individuals do every day not just during coastal cleanup day? Sure. There's a lot of things that people can do if they think about the kinds of things that the kinds of plastic that they use in their daily lives. So one thing is that they can use a recyclable or reusable coffee, mugs or reusable water bottles instead of plastic water bottles, you can use a metal straws we have a whole table year of metal straws that were giving out to folks instead of using classics Roz bring those. To your local restaurant. And then of course, when you go shopping, and this is quite common here in California now to bring a reusable bag rather than using up plastic or paper bag, so there's a lot that individuals can do we've been hearing a lot about that massive floating. Boom that's supposed to clean up the Pacific. Do you think that will work in Emerson of reducing the amount of plastics? Well, at ocean conservancy were really skeptical that the the ocean cleanup, the boom that's being taken offshore right now will actually work, but we're optimistic or you know, we we hope it does. Right. The ocean needs all the help. It can get the big problem is that even if the boom works as designed if we don't turn off the tap. Then you're going to have to keep cleaning up the ocean forever. So about eight million metric tons of plastic close into the world's oceans every year. That's about one garbage truck per minute somewhere in the world. So these numbers are quite large. And if we really want to keep the ocean clean, we've got to stop the flow of plastics into the ocean to the first place. Coli on the island closest to Japan. And I saw firsthand we went to the west coast, the most west beach, and there was a huge line of all kinds of plastics from toothbrushes everything under the sun. I mean, it's not just the United States that's dealing with this problem as well. Right. That's exactly right. And and the beaches often where you see this material accumulate and in places like why you're midway these are in the center of of the ocean Gyor's where a lot of the lands up off our coast here in California. We have the great Pacific garbage patch. And as a result, the material that floats at least, and there's a lot of plastic that sinks to the bottom of the ocean. But the stuff that floats will be driven to these islands by the currents and the winds making accumulate there in places like midway island albatross, which is a seagoing bird. There's large numbers of birds that are killed there every year because of ingestion of a whole variety of plastics, including things like lighters, and and toothbrushes and and and a variety of plastic fragments. Yeah. It was interesting to see it firsthand because you hear about it. But then to see it up close, and it really really shocked us all that were there. And we're trying to do more to help that big trash. What do you call it? That's out in the middle of the ocean. The clean up. Yeah. I mean, do you think someone it said that it may hurt fish and wildlife, and that it may not do anything it just left from Oakland actually this past week and heading out that way. I is this the wave of the future or do you think that it's got to start at home here with us? Well, I don't think that the the there's no real silver bullet to this problem of of five six in the world's oceans and the kinds of beach cleanups. That are happening today down in Santa Barbara Santa Monica and across the California in the world are are a part of a part of the solution. But we really need all hands on deck. This includes the private sector and the plastic manufacturers themselves. It includes individuals government entities. And and we really need that kind of a a coordinated and integrated strategy to solve this problem. And at the heart of that is first and foremost, preventing the flow of materials into the ocean. To the first place today is the first step. I guess thanks so much for joining us, George. Thank you. That's George Leonard. He is a scientist for the ocean conservancy, which is responsible for the Santa Monica cleanup KCBS news time nine twenty five time now.
