"Ask questions emerge about their response by Katie Reilly. Texas governor Greg Abbott made a point to hail the quick response of valiant local officials in the school shooting in uvalde, Texas this week. But as new details about the police response emerged Thursday, and questions about why it took officers 14 minutes to enter the building, that preys became more complicated, underscoring a dynamic that was in plain view at the governor's press conference the day before. On Wednesday, Abbott had yet again gone before TV cameras after a mass shooting to deliver details about the tragedy and express condolence for the victims, just as he had in 2018 after the Santa Fe high school shooting, and in 2019, after the shooting at an El Paso Walmart, in addition to calling for better access to mental healthcare, the governor focused on heaping praise on the actions of law enforcement officers, repeatedly commending the armed first responders for their bravery, and speaking about the psychological toll the shooting could have on them. As horrible as what happened was, it could have been worse. The reason it was not worse is because law enforcement officials did what they do. Abbott said, praising officers quick response, while speaking at a press conference on Wednesday. They showed amazing courage by running toward gunfire, Abbott initially said that school police officers engaged the gunman before he entered the school. But a new timeline of events later contradicted that. Notably absent from Abbott's press conference Wednesday prays for the educators who shielded their students and died beside them in two classrooms, where the gunman barricaded himself for an hour. That didn't sit well with clay robison, spokesperson for the Texas state teachers association, who says he watched Abbott's press conference with dismay. He expressed a lot of sympathy for the families, which you expect him to do, and for law enforcement, and there's nothing wrong with that. But he should have talked more about educators, Robinson says. We were disappointed that he didn't. Abbott's focus on the police became especially jarring, given the developments on Thursday. Some parents of rob elementary students are questioning whether police could have done more. On Thursday, the Texas Department of Public Safety said the gunman entered the building unobstructed, and there was no officer on campus when the shooting began..

"I try to understand the mindset of the thinking process that says some monster slaughters 19 children in an elementary school in Texas and it's the gun lobbies fault. I can not get there. I'm going to try. Let's listen to the president of the United States. As a nation, we have to ask, when in God's name, are we going to stand up to the gun lobby? When in God's name, we do we all know in our gut needs to be done is through 340 3448 days. Ten years since I stood up at a high school in Connecticut, a great school in Connecticut. Or another government massacred 26 people, including 21st graders at sandy hook elementary school. Since then, there have been over 900 incidents of gunfires reported on school grounds. Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland, Florida. Santa Fe high school in Texas. Oxford high school in Michigan. The list goes on and on and on this grows. When it includes mass shootings at places like movie theaters, houses of worship, as we saw just ten days ago to grocery store in Buffalo, New York. I am sick and tired of it. We have to act.

"Plays wide receiver at HD Woodson, worries about the game of football being diminished by the changes. Everything is about money now, she says, this story was reported by Dwight weingarten in Washington for the monitor. As weather extremes swing from flood to drought, sometimes in the same place, a 4000 year old system of rainwater storage holds promise and away for one person, one school, one city to have a global impact. Among green solutions to climate change, rainwater harvesting stands out for its potential to address two sides of a water paradox. Flooding that destroys critical infrastructure as well as drought conditions that threaten freshwater supplies. The practice dates back more than 4000 years to early Roman and Mayan civilizations. In its simplest form, it involves collecting water as it falls from the sky into barrels, so the water can be saved for later use. When implemented at scale, the tanks can aid in overall water conservation. During the 2002 drought in Santa Fe New Mexico, water was in such short supply that the city shut off irrigation to community parks and Santa Fe, high school. Let its baseball fields die. That's when the schools baseball coach put in a request for the school districts first rainwater harvesting cistern. Since then, the district has installed tanks at 5 other schools that together can capture more than 500,000 gallons. School districts are big resource consumers, says Lisa Randall. The sustainability program coordinator for Santa Fe public schools. That to me means we have a big responsibility to our students and our community and the planet. This story was reported by Tara.

"And a school shooting at santa fe high school in galveston county though it was among the deadliest such incidents at a high school in. Us history documentary filmmaker. Charleen things there has been a lack of transparency about it About what exactly happened that day. That's what he explores in his new film. The kids of santa fe the largest unknown mass shooting charleston joins us now. Good morning sir. Good morning thank you for having me on absolutely In what ways do you believe. There has been a lack of transparency about this. We'll just across the board This story has been treated like someone stole the pack of gum. it's faded into oblivion. I think everyone in santa fe high school students should watch this film and revolt against our high school Yes that the killer is to blame but high school could've prevented this. The killer was allowed to wear trenchcoat for about a half a of for about half year. And that was against dress code policy. But he was never flagged The assistant principal had a chance to prevent this shooting as you saw the killer walking through the hallway that morning but instead of sending him to the principal's office he sent him on his way another teacher saw the killer in the hallway as well caught contacted the front office but the front office did not answer. So there's plenty of blame to go around here from the principal all the way down and again every santa fe high school student should watch this film to premiere cinemas in pearland and revolt against high school. Because this is absolutely unacceptable. We're children and educators. Were slaughtered at their own high school and The school has become a mockery joke. And something has to be done about this. We have no trial. We have no justice right now. People have to start talking about this. These are the kinds of questions concerns that that aren't too degree raised after every school shooting. Oh if we had followed this policy or if this person had acted in this way or or maybe if we had recognized this sign. Those are the kinds of things that every school does contemplate. Go through to degree. But you think this is a different scale or a different level. What i want. I really wanna go case by case here. I don't want to Attach this to the other school shootings. I i only wanna talk about santa fe at at this time and The high school did not protect their students. And i don't think they're protecting them to this day. We've done a lot of qna's with the audience so far at premiere cinemas imperilling and a lot of them feel that the students today remain unprotected. So words are cheap. We need action. We need results and what happened on. May eighteenth two thousand. Eighteen is absolutely unacceptable and Nobody has been really punished. What what steps did you take in developing this documentary to ensure that the finished product would would honor and respect the community that suffered this awful ordeal the families victims of this terrible act and the that it wouldn't exploit them in any way. Well i don't mention the killer's name once in the entire movie. I'm trying to start a movement where the media follows my lead and they stopped talking about the killer On every turn. Because i think talking about the killer all the time creates copycats some criminal movie watching the coverage of a mass shooting their living room saying. Oh wow that killers getting so much attention. I wanted to be the next billy. The kid or something like that. So one way we could draw minimize gun..

"Remember the shooting in Santa Fe High School a few years back. Um, A guy by the name of Charley men is a documentary filmmaker. He made a movie. About the shooting. He says he was shocked at how little publicity the story got, and continues to get. It's like the forgotten high school shooting. He doesn't think we should forget about it. He talked to family members. He talked to students, former students who were there when the whole thing happened. And he was on my afternoon show you stay in a M. 9 50 kprc. There's some screenings will talk about that in a second. If you want to go see the movie, he says. It's not violent. It's not bloody. Nor is it intended to be. And he talked on my show yesterday about well first about the shooting itself. We had a student at a high school. Walk into a school and shoot 23 students and educators. We had Children and teachers slaughter. And this story has been treated like someone stole a pack of bubble gum. It has faded into oblivion. Um no one talks about it. If ever a story needed a documentary, this one was it. Even people in Santa Fe Don't know what happened. Yes, they know something bad happened. We all know something bad happened, but none of us can get specific. That's the key word here is specific. And once people hear these stories from the survivors Family members and good Samaritans. I think people are going to look at this tragedy a whole lot differently. And documentaries. I meant to inform, educate and raise awareness of the highest level, so that's why this film was made..

"Out and so walking out and quitting is wrong in Texas and is wrong in the Texas Legislature. That's the voice of Texas Governor Rabbit and I've been getting a lot of email. Saying, Hey, we've got a good team. Let's keep moving ahead, talking about Governor Abbott. Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick. And of course, Attorney General Paxton and I've got to say having been in this business for over 20 years. Um, um for the most part in major markets. I know a lot of mayors know a lot of governors. A lot of lieutenant governors. Um and we probably and I'm not blowing smoke. If you listen to the show, you know that I'm probably more impressed with the team we have here in the state of Texas as any place I've ever been, without a doubt. Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick is with us. To discuss the special session of the Texas Legislature begins tomorrow. Um and First of all. Welcome. Welcome, Lieutenant Governor Patrick, How are you doing? Great Rick. I hope you had a great fourth and all of your listeners as well. It was a great day to celebrate America when every one. I shouldn't say everyone when lots of people on the left of the mainstream media seemed to attack us every day. It was great celebrating. It's not really good. Amen to that before we get started on the special session, which I believe starts tomorrow. Yes, sir. Your thoughts as we look back five years ago this evening. When we lost five law enforcement officers of the worst the worst law enforcement attacks since 9 11. You know, I've gone through the timeline. I've gone through as much of the back story as I can. From your perspective as lieutenant governor, your thoughts. Rick. I'm going to try to walk through this a little bit without getting emotional because it, uh it hits me very hard to even think about it. As you were leading into this. I knew that's what you want to talk about. Today, primarily I will tell you. What was elected Lieutenant. Go right ended eight years. But in the Senate, you don't attend funerals around the state. But as governor, Lieutenant governor, you're not required to but Governor Abbott myself have taken a upon us to try to be. We can't be at all of them. But to be as many as we possibly can. And I would have never expected sometimes together, sometimes one of us if the other can't be there. Sometimes the first lady I'll attend, but I never expected wreck. That would be at so many funerals. We've had 70 70 people. Killed. I believe that's the number correct and domestic shootings whether it was Santa Fe High School, the church WalMart desa Others. We've had loss of life. Uh, tragedies like hurricanes and and we've had to This point we've had I believe 53 to 54 officers. Killed in the line of duty just since I was elected 2015 and I believe 36 by gunfire again. I may be and notes in front of them. Maybe all if I wanted to, and every time I go, I'm inspired. By the rock of Faith that people stand on to get through. I'm talking about the wires. The husbands left behind the Children, the parents often who are bearing their bearing their sons. Daughters who were killed the line of duty because we all know as parents. We should not be bearing our Children and it's I would say. Cumulatively. It's taken. It's taken a toll. Um, because you know, I don't No. These people in one case I do the parent. I don't know them, but, uh, I I just feel there. And I could feel how much they hurt. Um and you know, I think about the little boy who was it was a little boy. He was a senior in high school who was buried in the Dallas cowboy casket when he was shot killed at that school because he loved the Cowboys. And I tell you that was emotional. And that I think about this night five years ago, I was actually it was a grandfather day with my My grandson and we were watching a movie and it was late. Uh and I got a text at a call from Colonel MMA crawl ahead of the department public safety and said there was a shooting in Dallas and governor Abbott was out of the state. And several times this happened. The governor's just coincidentally been out of the state. So I'm governor acting governor when he is and so and then I got the call on the second. And then the third. And so I Alright, So I asked Steve McCraw All colonel. I said Steve Should I come or not come because you're you're damned if you do and damned if you don't in the eyes of the public very often rich that if you go, people think well, you're going to be seen. And if you don't go, where were you? Whether it's the public or or the people involved in that particular tragedy. So, of course I wanted to go. And he said no, absolutely. They would. They would want you there. So we hustled up an airplane and I flew up there on the tradition that I would come in the back door of the hospital and the back door and not at night and not be where the cameras were. And so Memory. I have Mm. Walking into that hospital. Got there, just at the moment that they were taking several bodies out on it has recovered. I assume going to the morgue. And, uh, Does the the officers And the hospital workers. Lining the hall, respect and salute. Devastated, direct devastated they were in shock. Five officers gunned down murdered. It wasn't It wasn't in a robbery. It wasn't you know, stopping a bank holdup it was murdered. During the time, by the way that they were protecting. People in the streets of Dallas who were marching against them. Marching against them. With the black lives matter. Anti police Group, and they and And they were just murdered. And and the shot of what's now you could just see it on their face. With no one's ever experienced that in modern times of five officers murdered and I just I'll never forget that image of The family members following as I recall down that hallway until we were there in silence. And then the next day. The the next day, and if you have to go to a break, I understand we come back and pick it up. You know what your time constraints are, but the next day, I needed to say something in the media because the media was asking. And I, and I think it was on Fox and CNN and I and I said, I said, you know the hypocrisy that the hypocrites who are attacking police at the same time expecting them. Be there to protect them in their march, and I got a lot of criticism for that. But that was just what was on my heart. And and and and and I remember a lot of the aftermath. I remember, um There was a black lady. Who had two Children with her, Um somewhere. I don't know if she was involved in in the march that night or if she was a bystander When the gunfire broke that she built on top of her two Children. To save them, and a police officer dove on top of her to save her. And those two young black boys who I met later. Um They wanted to be police officers. Because An officer down on top of their mom to save her who was saving them. That's That I still remember those two boys telling me that and, uh and then the next morning Uh, we weren't went with the union head of the union because they deliver checks the next day, just because what we forget Rick when an officer is killed the line of duty Well, their family. "Day care. I haven't been to your kid's day care, but I will guarantee you his daycare. It looks fancier than your kid's day care, and that's no insult to your kid's day care. That's a compliment to what he's doing. Nobody wants to know if he can show up between radio shows around one o'clock. What a neat Honey, you're gonna eat the food. Okay? All right. Okay. One more call of your tale of a bad driver, and then I want to talk to somebody that was at Santa Fe and I will ask for you at the appropriate time. If you're out there, just hang with me. The reason for this. As I was talking about. Michael has his learner's permit. So we've been out driving and one of the things that young people don't anticipate is so one of the things we did. We got him. 59. We came up 16. And I said, I want you to drive in front of the Galleria. We're gonna do that, for about 15 minutes. We're going to go from 16 at West Timer We're going to go down to about when rock and we're going to come down or maybe Voss and come back. And then and the reason is and it was after a baseball game. So it was probably Friday night 10 o'clock 11 o'clock. Said, because this is where people are out partying. And I want you to see the difference in how people drive because every one of them is how to drink. And I want you when you enter an entertainment district. You need to know you're going to get guy. It's just like dogs showing off for the female and trying to be the Alpha dog. They're going to drive like idiots. They're gonna you know, accelerate up to the red light. That you're gonna get a bunch of dudes on crotch rockets and look, here's the deal if a dude on a crotch rocket Gets run over flips or whatever. You just laugh because they're idiots. Everybody knows they're idiots. We all know who they are, what they are. They think they're cool if a guy starts popping a wheelie Just lay back. Move one lane over and hope because that's what that everybody is wishing for that for that guy, Jeff, What's your tell I, uh Hello. Uh, my Children are a little older now they're I think my oldest about 35, but When I was teaching them to drive. I'm made them. This is before iPhones, but I made them leave their cell phones at home. And I told them I said the radios off. I said while you're driving radios off, and I told them I said I'm not your dad here. I said, I'm your driving instructor and I hold your license in my hand. So if you don't do what I say Yes. Gone anyway, Um I just wanted to say that the worst thing to happen is your cell phones on the road, But I told my kids That taught them to watch the left front tire on any car grabbed next them because that's the one that's gonna change everything. That's the first thing is gonna move. Uh, but emotionally I just told him I said no radio, no cell phone. You don't listen to anything. You just drive. Yep. And if people would just do that, you think about distracted driving. We were young. It was the radio. But you know, you only fiddled with the radio for so long. The cell phone. That thing can keep you engaged for a while, and that's not good. That's That's a bad, bad deal. And that is, you know, a couple of changes from when we were growing up from home. First of all, you know your parent could be I'm Michael's driving instructor. So instead of going to defensive, I mean toe driving instruction school and all that your parent can do that now. Yeah, And then you take notes. You write down all the things they do, and it's actually kind of a good exercise because it forces me to teach him. You know, different lessons. This is what you do on the yield. This is what you do, and then I do a lot of stuff that they didn't do for us. We go out at if we're coming home from a baseball game, and I take a circuitous route and put him in a in a spot where I know the driving's gonna be bad. This weekend, we went it was pouring rain. We went out while it's raining because you gotta learn. You know, you don't want a kid to learn that on their own. You sound like my wife. She's actually a pretty good driver. I'm impressed, said Hey, Michael. I'll tell you what curtsying awareness would stop a lot of this hoop along the roads. But people who are not courteous in aware in their day to day life are certainly not going to be behind the wheel. Absolutely, you know, One of one of the things I notice is of a person by going to park. They can't park straight to save their rumpus. That's an indicator. It's exactly that's exactly right. The other thing is and this is a women thing. When you go to pull out if you don't have any idea how far that your front sticks out, and you have to remember that scene in Austin powers where he gets stuck sideways. On the on the whatever That machine is. Oh, uh, if you can't, uh If you can't pull out back up with no more than two shouldn't take more than that. Shouldn't take that money. But if you can't do that, you don't need to be driving and you see these women They pulled back. Then they put up an inch. And then if you're behind them, you're going crazy. Like Lady. You had three ft. The other thing they don't know to do basic, simple engineering. Turn the wheel before you start going. They don't do that. They got their car straight, but not headed to the right. They start going and then they try to turn it. Oh, my goodness. Did you not have a father Ed? Hey, How's it going, Michael? Good. Go ahead. Yeah, One of the biggest things are indicators for me is no plastic bump bumper covers of missing. They got trailer tail lights for tail lights, and they got a light ball on the front of the car. Well again, people that have had previous accidents are more likely. And you see these guys, you know what it always is. It's always like a little Chevy. I mean, not a Chevy Ford probe. That's a little forward that it feels like a lot of these folks. Drive that's caved in on the side. They got the taped in window. Yeah. Where We're not replacing the window. We just taping it up. Hmm. You got you got tail lights missing hubcaps missing. They're driving as if Well, I better not say, Tommy, go ahead. Hi, Michael. I'm a truck driver who were the things that are really bad are when people won't move over for emergency vehicles or they won't let a truck or another car get over into the left lane. Give these emergency vehicles room. Some of these people were never taught that I'm convinced of it. Especially Asian drivers, because I have noticed they will sit in the passing lane, which is what that is at a very, very low speed, and they're not trying to be difficult. They're not into they're not flipping you off, like Ha ha. Watch what I'm doing. They have no idea. They're like, Well, this lane is what ain't nobody in this lane. Everybody knew I get over here to board the boat of it, And they have no idea what why people are mad at them. No idea. It was three years ago today. And I feel like it would be, as Abraham Lincoln would say altogether fitting and proper. If we take one segment If you are a person that was there on that day. "That we have an local address in our batte. He is twenty one years of age already. So welcome back through public broadcast. I think avenue co host cutting. When you're right now. Logan you wanna come on over to schuyler is helping me earlier. Come on over here. Logan jump up here and put these headphones on. If you don't mind. And i haven't seen you in forever so can so this is this logan. He's going to help me with the show here today for minute archer okay. Screws could see senior since when they hear september. Yeah i think something like that anyway. So here we got to do next and you can help me with it so Ted cruz went to the floor of the senate and really kind of took us apart and really did a great job so logan. Here's what i want you to. Can you just push that right there. Right in and touch rate there one on top. This one's a stinger. Push it right there once again. Sleep wake up to a horrific act of mass murder. All of us lift up in prayer families boulder colorado families in atlanta that lost their lives and clinton the police officer in boulder colorado. I can tell you in texas. We've seen far too many of these. I was in santa fe. The morning of that shooting santa fe high schools less than an hour from my house. I was in el paso at the walmart for yet another senseless mass murder. I was in dallas where five police officers were murdered by a radical. I was in sutherland springs in that. Beautiful sanctuary where a monster murdered innocent people. I've been to too. Damn many of these senator from connecticut just said it's time for us to do something i agree. It is time for us to do something and every time. There's a shooting. We play this ridiculous theatre or this committee gets together and proposes a bunch of laws. That would do nothing to stop. these murders. Senator from connecticut just said the folks on the other side of the aisle have no solutions while the senator from connecticut knows that is false. And he knows that's false because senator grassley and together introduced legislation grassley crews targeted at violent criminals targeted at felons targeted at fugitives targeted at those with serious mental disease. To stop them from getting firearms to put them in prison when they try to illegally by guns. What happens in this committee after every mass shootings democrats proposed taking away guns from law-abiding citizens because that's their political objective. But what they propose not only. Does it not reduce crime. It makes it worse the jurisdictions in this country with the strictest gun control have among the highest rates of crime and murder. When you disarm law-abiding citizens you make the more likely to be victims. If you wanna stop these murders go. After the murderers grassley crews came to vote on the floor of the senate in two thousand thirteen at got a majority vote on the floor of the senate fifty. Two senators voted for grassley. Crews in the harry reid democratic senate nine democratic senators voted for grassley cruise. The most bipartisan support of any of the comprehensive legislation. So why did it pass into law because democratic senators including many of the senators in this room including the senator from connecticut who just said republicans have no answers. Filibustered the law and prevent it from passing demanded sixty votes if grassley crews passed into law sutherland springs. Very likely would not have happened. Why is that because the shooter there. The murderer there had a conviction in the air force that the obama air force failed to report to the background check system and grassley crews mandated an audit of all of the convictions to make sure the background check. Database has those felonies in it. Not only that grassley crews mandated that when a felon tries illegally by a firearm the department of justice prosecute them. The department of justice has a long. And i think indefensible practice of not prosecuting felons and fugitives who tried illegally by guns if grassley cruise past the gun crimes task force. That eight ahead created would have charged prosecutors with going after gun. Criminals locking them up and putting them in prison. That's how we prevent these that we will learn in the coming days and weeks. The exact motivation of the murderers in atlanta and boulder colorado. We'll learn what happened there but we already know. This pattern is predictable and over and over again. There are steps. We can take to stop these crimes. And you know what the steps aren't. The steps aren't disarming law-abiding citizens every year firearms are used in a defensive capacity. Defend women children families. Roughly a million times a year in the united states and the democrats who want to take away. The guns from those potential victims would create more victims of crimes. Not less. i agree. It's a time for actions and by the way i don't apologize for thoughts or prayers. I will lift up in prayer people who are hurting and i believe in the power prayer and the contempt. Democrats for prayers is an odd sociological thing. But i also agree. Thoughts and prayers alone are not enough. We need action today. Chairman grassley are introducing again grassley. Crews and i would ask senate democrats including some of our newer colleagues who just got here not to participate again in the shameful filibuster that this body engaged in two thousand thirteen. Let's target the bad guys. The felons pulled the turned it on but turn the volume. And that's why you're so anyway. Welcome back so I wanna ask logan some questions about this. And you know what i'm going to ask you. We haven't practiced this right. So how old are you six six. Okay so i want to see a six year old can figure the answer to this question. Okay.
