"As our news watch continues. While the rainstorm that's drenching the Bay Area is also doing a number in the Sierra. We have more now from kcbs Jim Taylor. A lot of rain here does mean a lot of snow in the Sierra. Yeah, this is definitely going to be a cold system with a lot of moisture so we're talking about feet of snow up in the Sierra, especially the highest elevations. Travel is not recommended there. Here, roger gas lead meteorologist national weather service says we are talking hail. That small hill that we get across the Bay Area are very, very small hell, but sometimes they can actually pile up and clog up some of the storm giant across the Bay Area. So we're going to have to be on the lookout for that, especially Saturday afternoon into Sunday. When you say, hey, that means it's going to be cold, too, right? It is going to be cold and one of the big stories after this rain moves out over the weekend is we're going to get very cold temperatures as we head into early next week, especially in those colder interior valleys of the Bay Area. More widespread upper 20s to low 30. Winter. Sure seems as if it's here Jim Taylor case EBS. And because of the storm this weekend, officials in the south bay are trying to do something about it to help the unhoused. It's about helping people who may not have a place to get inside from the elements, warming centers opened today throughout Santa Clara county, widespread rain as we've been reporting expected with gusty win so they're trying to get people inside. The county's office of supportive housing is encouraging people who are unsheltered to take advantage of the warming centers that are open, outreach workers, community partners, as well as several volunteers, have been visiting encampments and distributing blankets, ponchos, tarps, and tents. They're also out there

"David Welch, Santa Clara county just marked a major increase in its fines for illegal tobacco sales, and it's hoping others will follow suit. Here's ques Keith manconi. The measure targets the sale of tobacco products to underage people, as well as the sale of E cigarettes and flavored tobacco products, both of which are banned within the county's jurisdiction. County leaders made the change on concern that the lower penalties weren't giving enough of a deterrent. Now, fines have been set about ten times higher and repeat offenders run the risk of losing their permits forever. I think it really speaks to the commitment to this as a major public health issue. Nicole Cox, who runs the tobacco free communities program for the county, she says most smokers start the habit young. So the policies really seek to address early access and initiation of tobacco use and to prevent lifelong addiction and harms health harms caused from that addiction. The new penalties apply only to county land, but county officials are hoping to see more south bay cities adopt them as well. In the south bay, Keith manconi, a pioneer in providing access to safe abortions at a time when it was illegal to do so in California, is getting a posthumous pardon by governor Newsom. Laura miner made a career of providing safe and accessible elective abortions to women in California at a time when restrictive laws forced the procedure into unregulated and unsafe spaces. In 1949, minor was sentenced to four years in prison for her work. Governor Newsom says minor story is a, quote, powerful reminder of the generations of people who fought for reproductive freedom in this country and the risks that so many Americans now face in a post row world. Pfizer says its latest booster provides a stronger immune response against the omicron sub variants than its original COVID vaccine. Case CBS reporter Melissa Cole Ross takes a look at whether that means it'll keep people from getting sick at all. Pfizer's bivalent vaccine produces antibody levels about four times higher than the original shot when it comes to fighting the BA four and BA 5 variants, according to the company, but that's not the whole story, says Johns Hopkins center for health security senior scholar, doctor amesh adalja. For people who are looking for more data, this is helpful, but it's still not enough to say exactly how much more beneficial these boosters are versus if we wouldn't have updated the boosters and went through with the older boosters as something for high risk individuals. Speaking on kcbs is ask an expert, adult just says that's because it remains to be seen whether the shot will keep people from coming down with COVID on top of protecting from severe disease. He adds that the messaging about the boosters and who really needs them has been confusing. I've always said that I think that boosters really should have been targeted to high risk individuals. "We were hoping to get a random selection people from Santa Clark county, but it tended to the people who tend to volunteer were from the richer parts of the county. I had Stanford professors writing begging to be in the study because they wanted to know their antibody levels. So we did some adjustment for that. In LA county, we hired a firm that had a preexisting representative sample of LA county. But it didn't include nursing homes. It didn't include people in jail, things like that. Didn't include the homeless populations. So it's representative of a community dwelling population. Both of those. And there we found that both in LA county and Santa Clara county in April 2020, something like 40 to 50 times more infections than cases in both places. So for every case that admit reported to the public health authorities, we found that 40 or 50 other infections, people with antibodies in their blood. That suggested that they had had COVID and covered. So people were not reporting or severe, at least in those days under reporting. Yeah, I mean there was this testing problem. There weren't so many tests available. People didn't know. A lot of them we asked a set of questions about the symptoms they faced. And Wilson said that face no symptoms are the most. 30, 40% of the said face, they're no symptoms. I mean, even these days, how many people report that they get COVID when they get COVID? Okay. I'll have those numbers that .2%. Approximately held up over time. That is. So if professor Johnny needs, who's a colleague of mine at Stanford, is it world expert in meta now? Probably the most cited scientist on earth I think. At least living. He did a meta analysis of now a hundred or more of these seroprevalence studies. And what he found was that that .2%.
