"I loved it loved the competition the camaraderie and everything about it and i always push myself. Hey this is the most important thing in my life that i'm trying to really grow as a person not just on the field but grows a person off the field also helped me on the field and i continued just to take advantage opportunity because i was always push myself in always ready for those opportunities when presented themselves so. When did you know though that it was working. When did you know you have a chance to become what you have. Here's here's the beauty of it. I didn't know no. I didn't know i didn't know how far i was going to take this. I still don't know how pharma to be able to take this. And i think that's the beauty of how i've set out on my journey is it's all about. How do i perceive my light okay i. I'm trying the hardest. I can to be the best that i can with the opportunities in the platform that i have right now. And whether that's networking were that's on the field. Whether that's no plane on you know an off season is is just a me trying to take advantage of the things that are in front of me. And if i do that i know they will lead to more opportunities and so. That's why i haven't. I haven't known even in college. I didn't know how proud if i was going to be an nfl or not. I was getting ready to go in the business world And then the this opportunity knocks and i was ready and that continued throughout my career. Now starting going into year five is because continued. You know opportunities have come to me. And i've been ready. Just because i have a mentally prepared like hey i'm ready to continue to take it. To the next level you mentioned networking you mentioned the business world and we get to the football element of course. But what would you done in the business world and how you networking. What are you going on in the business world now. It seems like it sounds like to me. You have some interest outside of this. Oh yeah oh yeah. No like i said it. Football's definitely pasha but not the passionate passionate becoming the best version of myself. So as far as the business. I was actually going to the energy field working in colorado. There's a lot of energy Whether it's oil and gas solar things of that nature But now you know. Football is take a different route and kind of just accelerated my my network inability a part owner of the fan control. Football league Lamp company of a nine gaming group company. Which is like a company that we hope athletes celebs connect on switch and i have other things that are being worked on right now in the past out in the behind the scenes really incredible team that helps me do this lime during football season so i can really focus on football but yeah. I really proactive and just trying to help people at my foundation as well. We just built a weight room for santa barbara. High school. so really being proactive in the community. And what is the name of your foundation. Austin the austin equa foundation. What is the mission and goal of. The mission is to implement resources that people can use to better themselves through skills by actually doing things for example. The weight room that we disappointed Some people might seem just away room but the weight room represents a lot more represents teamwork hardwork mental toughness. And all these other skills that you can learn White actually using and so now. We're also doing a project to raise money for. Youthful box provide equipment so people can actually go out and do things and learn that way. How much have you found that the more success you have on the football field the more opportunities come your way one hundred percent one hundred percent you know. And that's that's the beauty of the nfl platform you're In as nause younger guy. I didn't really realize the power in just the scope of the nfl platform until i really started having success and started seeing how affects people's lives. And i think that's why it's so big right because people come to attract to watch us play on sundays to root for their team and it really brings people together and then for us as players bettega advantage the best low because people in turn want to hang out with us you know. Want to talk to us. And so if you're a business minded you have you know a lot of people that are fans and there's a lot of business minded people out there as well and so. That's really what i try to reach. These young guys to come in look focused on football right now. But once you get this off season make sure your networking. No make sure you're talking to these people out in the community because you never know what what connection what person that you impact. That really could help you outside of a bomb. You mentioned. You still didn't know when you were going to become an nfl player but what was your welcome to the nfl. Moment when you knew you finally had arrived. Austin welcome to the nfl moment I think it was a few things. Give me them. All in different is different stages right coming into or coming into the league. In being i was the only running back that was New on the t. My rookie year and i remember. I remember going into rookie meetings with my coaches. And just one time. I just start working started break at broke down and start crying. I was little cracks. Oh so overwhelmed. With the offense a playbook and i was trying so trying everything that i could my power to learn this thing and i kept messing up and it was during. Ota's right so as rookie. I didn't think i was like we're always been evaluated which we are but oj's really a time you make game. But i didn't treat it like that. I don't understand that in a salon out here just breaking down because putting so much stress myself and so that was one of my very first. Welcome to me. The nfl moments Just the magnitude of the mental part of the game. How did you get through that one. I sat down with my coach. And he's like hey man like like you need to take some time off like get your mind away from football And just continue to look. You're not going to get a lot of opportunities field. Like i was six string right i was. I was behind five of the running-backs. My all my reps came on. Scout team specialties. As always look take that time in us as your advantage. Get a lot of mental reps. So that when you get on the fuel head your time has come now. You have actual rep so listen to that kind of just got my mind relaxed a little bit. I remember my first ever huddle. I got through iran. I went in. I had i had a run to the back behind the behind the line of everyone i started thrown out because i was just so nervous. 'cause i cared so much and were there any other. Welcome to the nfl moments. Aside from crying from your playbook and throwing up your first huddle yeah. I think actually it was after. I made the team. You know my first game. We play the broncos and i was playing governor and got jammed up on the sideline. it cannot move house like okay. This is this is real like these guys are good You know you've got two guys in front of the. I beat him. You know that was only time everything from then on. Okay this is. I know you know the mentality in the intense at the half. And then there's another one too. You know what philip you know. We're playing jacksonville. Started scrambling on an obviously. Philip rivers must mobile guy so as i turn a rookie at turned a block form downfield. And he comes..

We have to make structural changes to help. Kids make the choices that will help them again. Grows people is in an because process in so you know and having implemented of course in the pandemic year where they're remote the feedback. We've gotten from the upper. School students is so positive even in that way. We think my gosh. I can't wait till next year when you know when they're actually living in person and that they now feel like they have more opportunity to really dig deep journal class period. You're transitions in day. And just that sense that every night doesn't feel like such a you know those two things by yourself in for teachers from they have fewer classes to prep for each night right and so they're able to have time to be creative in their whether they in a foster home to be able to kids. Thank you on the air on the radio. Just someone you're grateful for this year. The listeners who were doing this gave us the name and contact info of the person they want to. Thank and we have one of those people on the air right now. It's Nora. In Queens and hi, Nora. I'm sure this is a little weird to be on the air on Thanksgiving for something like this of thanks for coming out to play with us. Hi, Brian. Happy Thanksgiving. Thank you for this Beautiful show. By the way. He's been listening all morning, and it's been so nice. We also listen every day like so many people. It's really helped us get through these Crazy nine months. I guess you could say crazy for years. Thank you. Thank you. And the callers have been amazing today. No surprise to me. Have you figured out who the person might be? Who asked us to include you in this and who's about to come on the line and thank you for something. Mm hmm. I was very surprised and excited when I got a message from your producer, and I have no idea who could really be since I really just see the same three people every day. But As my husband ran into another room and close the door. A. I have a sneaking suspicion. It might be him. So Hi David from Queens. Hey, How are you? Hi, Laura. Hi, David In the other room. Yeah, I know This is strange, but you know, I just No, they're not the past. You know, either nine months have been Um, you know, outrageous, but the silver lining to this is that we've been able to spend so much time together. And while I've always been in awe of you See, you know, every minute of every day. As a professional as a mom as a teacher. I just wanted to say thank you because I'm so in awe of who you are as an individual and You know? I just I don't think there's enough time or enough opportunity. And really say how much I appreciate the fact that he's turned into a super heroine in the past nine months and been able to hold down everything and then the glue of our family and And I love you. And I just wanted to say thank you. And like one of those weird things where I sent this email to the Brian Lehrer show, and they called and I just wanna shout from the rooftops that you are fantastic. And I know this goes for a lot of the moms and dads that are holding them a lot more responsibility and craziness than they thought they would win this year started, but Um You know Nora Gomez Strauss. I love you very much, and I'm forever indebted T first this year and every other year. I'm crying on the radiant So, Barry. Okay. What do you get yourself together a little bit. And David the things that you Listed to us when you responded, um that I mean the number of things that I don't even know if you've done it justice yet, So there's like the home schooling of the kid's doing, you know, virtual learning. Ships. Did she get elected like a Democratic County committee member? Something like that. Yeah. So you know when, uh You know, when Trump won the election, we kind of made a commitment to each other that we would be below involved in in our democracy and No Nora, in the midst of this ran for the Queens County Democratic Committee and one and you know, I thought that was like, remarkable and add to that the fact that you know, while you know our two year old and a six year old were Running around the house. You know, she found time to include them in phone, banking and text banking for various elected. No official. And on top of that, you know, I think, you know, we all know what a hard time this has been for everybody, but you know the arts and cultural community. Really took the past. You know, eight or nine months on the chin and Nora works in that realm, and you know it was able to Somehow, you know, ramp up her professional life. While doing all these other things. They're working for the public art fund and doing a lot of the digital communications, which was a way for people to stay engaged. And You know you you I think we all haven't Unbelievable amount of admiration for the people we choose to spend their time with, but until you see it to the extent that we've all seen it You know when we're where when we're You know? When we're with folks that we really care about every minute of every day. It's a constant reminder and And so beautiful s. Oh, yeah. Uh, you know, when a guy's sets up something like this for his wife, I don't know if he's trying to get out of the doghouse for something or whatever, but he sounds like he really means it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I think it is a very wonderful partner and I feel So lucky to be in this Strange, difficult, challenging situation with him. I will also say David is also Lee, an elected member of the Democratic Campaign Committee. We we ran on a joint ticket together. Yeah. Okay, So tell me if it makes me want, you know, I don't know. At least it's not. You're not like James Carville and Mary Matalin. Where from the other party's fight every night over dinner about politics?.

"Making your appearance? Expressed in knowing that one of your students was. Mccaren Reno role in my. In the main. Thank you for teaching me how to forceful your net legit. Several. On thousands of dollars. Turn me away. For me. Absolutely. In principle, various time. Any part of solution? About. Learn from these example. All right. Get yourself a talk show. But that's not the place to do that crap. I'm telling no okay before I disagree with you. Which I will why a valedictorian is a person that has the, the honor of speaking before thousands of people who have come together to all celebrate the accomplishments of our entire class. That's what about trained us now, if she had written this for a newspaper or but she screwed up everybody else's celebration with that. I mean and it may have all been true. And it's maybe it's kind of the muckraking that needs to be done. But not then that was about her. The reason she's giving her speech is because of the hard work. She didn't. That's why she's chosen to give a speech. I mean, a lot of alad Torrens give speeches where they give their opinions on what people have to look forward to and, and give inspiring messages, obviously their own opinion. She retired to stand up there and it's her time. You know, look, obviously, they didn't go over speech. Apparently they did I because I think speech. No, yes, she turned in his speech to get pre-approved and then obviously went off the rails. So she's a liar, then. Well, I mean if you wanna go down the list of problems at the school, I guess you could add that to the list. All those things she said she could have alluded to it. She could have alluded to, you know. I'm just saying that for everybody. She was very self centered and selfish by doing this, because it ruined it really feel that really, really think that people would rather sit there, listen to some inspirational, quote that someone pulled from some book that they probably didn't even will not use the they wanna hear one of their classmates. Just yeah. Be honest about, you know what this school did this for me. Because she did at the beginning of speech thing, those that she did feel really made an impact on her education and everything. And then she was calling out those that didn't do anything for her might have heard her and you know what good for you by she's. She's staying at the school. She worked hard was obviously student, obviously, there are, you know, these are these all these problems are, are chronicle than occurred as she said, you know, again, you know, bad the bad counselor that she called out. You know, the, the one that got escorted off can't drunk teacher. Whatever if all those things were issues, obviously, there were people already knew about the drunk teacher, whether or not, they knew about the counselor. The counselor doesn't have a chance to, to say anything on her own behalf. So as we hear one-sided part of this, and, again, she's eighteen years old, okay? And I'm not saying what does that mean? Well, I'm gonna tell you what it means. It means that. Her life experience is been limited to four years of mom and dad, providing everything for her, and her perspective was singular, and she's there, speaking on behalf of a class, I don't have any in the class, but let's say with the parents and everybody thousand people I just disagree. I don't think she should have done that. I, I think why not call out those in power when you have an opportunity to, to do it. Why not use your moment? Your ten or fifteen minutes of fame and your microphone in your platform to call out injustice. She obviously thought and if you I mean, I'm sure she thinks it's not only happening to me, it could happen. Other people, you don't think that, that counsel's gonna pause before they don't take a meetings with people that have scheduled appointments with them. You don't think that the school is going to come forward and give students more information earlier about scholarships that can help them. Save money. She might be helping future classes because he's calling people out for failing. Why not? I don't think she's helping anything in that regard. I mean, they already cops drag guy off campus so that she was just that's the one thing. But I mean counselors, not giving you scholarship information until a day before they do if true is, is there's a if true. So the whole world is talking about this girl now and Santa Cedric that's in the San Diego area. Right. It south. Yeah. And so I mean. The. The school look good. Her job is to, to deliver a speech of which, again is is supposed to be a celebration of their time. There you show me. I mean there've been valedictorian speeches over the years in times of war where they talk about, you know division. But the ideas, I, my thought is supposed to bring people together just seems like that on the light that crowd was really engaged together and disagree with that. That's young people. Right. Be dismissive of young people. I mean she knows what she went through at that school. And I think that she has every right to use her time that she earned to say whatever the hell she wants to Brad, who I think agrees with you. How you Brad. You're Keijo chip NICKY. What do you say? Nikki is right on, you know, our Dettori had to have her speech sensor, back in the seventies because of it. And she gave them the speech that she thought they were going to say, when it came up, she said, what she wanted to, and they took the microwave from her. Hurt time Brad five hundred people. A week dying in a war where your friends are all being shipped off. That's a little bit different than coming up and for your school. And really essentially bitching about the things you didn't like that happened in the school to you, personally, with the counselor and not allowing that person to have a side, we all knew. Vietnam was wrong everybody. With an IQ over doesn't matter chip, you're wrong on this one is her time. She can say that speech is supposed to have the speech then why have valedictorian? Why doesn't the school just stand up there and just say what they want to make themselves sound really good. Why do it? I don't need to be if I was balloted torn a mouthpiece for the school, right? She was talking to her classmates, and her classmates knew exactly what she was saying, because when they talked about it, they all cheered it wasn't just her going through this. It was her whole classmate. And if she made the school bed. Shame on them. Exactly that way. Thanks, brad. The call pal. All right. Thank you. On the on the other some of its scored through all these calls here, Arlene higher on chip in NICKY. What do you think? Hi. No. I disagree with Nikki, I'm sorry. I don't think it was the right time replace to do that. When would have been the right time and place. Go to a school board meeting, go to a school meeting to the administration and set up something with parents and Sakhalin Steph and students, there's, there's way better venues, this would not accomplish it because nobody can rebut it. You know, the thing that bothers me the most. Arlene is it's not an I wasn't inspirational at all. It was kinda wrote. I mean, there there's probably a way she could have critic criticize the school and talked about moving forward in a she's not a speechwriter. She's a kid, and I get that part. Right. I just too, but this is not a time for criticism. This is a celebratory time, and if she didn't want to celebrate then she shouldn't have submitted ourselves for valedictorian and number two of eligible Taurean speech has to get approved. And so I'm sure that they did not approve that she. She said she would do the other one and she didn't so she lied. So that's a bad part of that time when there can be. No rebuttal, just she just loses all her credibility. I don't believe has two things. She says thanks for the call. I think you could you could hear Nikki's I roll down in Santa Clarita. Just it's, it's, it's, it's emblematic of the times, we live in where people in power tell those that are not. You know, this is the time in the place for all of that this is a time in we get to dictate what you say and what you do because look you're ruining everything for everyone. Why can't we just keep it nice? You know what she worked her butt off to be valedictorian? She earned those minutes, and I think is wrong for them to prove the speech anyway, is the wedding and a person. Toast, and they start talking about how they had sex with the bride or how the bride was probably will. I mean, they didn't earn that though. You see what I'm saying like this girl earned her position as valedictorian someone standing up drunk at a weapon, grabbing the Mike little bit different. But I'm talking about this was her moment to shine. If you don't want people to have their own moment and work to have that position as valedictorian, then don't have valedictorian. Dave, you're on with chip Nikki here. So, yes. So this young woman. Hold on me. Tell me talking about. We're talking about Santa Barbara high school valedictorian just lit into the school and won the speeches. She was supposed to give and she, you know, she brought up a lot of stuff and now the whole country's talking about it, and I don't think she should have done it in that place. I think that, that will last caller said school board meeting, what have been a good place. Think he's like killing me. What do you think you disagree with me? Right. Well, Justin, no. But she sounds like she's a whistle blower. She exposing to school everybody. The cops escort and a guy off campus. I mean they that. Yeah. Well, we're a mess. You won't happen. So. Oh. Personally for me are back taste of maybe if she had tried to go through the school board or whatever the people probably would missing too. Well, it sounds like the counselors, not very talented the council. Apparently at least if you believe her side of it, and that's an important part of this is this one. The counselor sounds like she screwed up almost screwed up or college career. Right. I mean by not giving her the right information when she should've and that's important. Thank you for the call. Appreciate it. Robert, you're on the ship and NICKY. What do you think? Hey, Stephanie shift Nikki. It's so good to hear you guys. I normally loved the heckuva. But can you say chip, but I totally agree with Mickey on this one. I am proud of that young lady for speaking truth to power. I think this causes, maybe the school to be a little introspective and helps the next group of kids, this all about the kids. And we need to be sure if they're just wanna sleep this under the rug of this school. That's just going to willy nilly walk their way. And just do the least amount to get through their day and get through the school year. Well, maybe they don't have to can't do that anymore. Maybe actually have to address the problems that this young lady brought up, well, the next group of kids, so they don't have to go. Both have solid points on that. But I think that again, if I think that was, this is just me supposing here. Right. So I think a little bit was about her and the ego of being able to do that. Switching the speeches she could have gone to a local newspaper and San Diego. She to on, you know, the union for Byun down girl, walks into the local newspapers. Like, you know, my, my, my parents wasn't taking my appointments, and I'm valedictorian. It's not a new story like that. She made it a news story to bring attention to it. You use your position and you know it could be a little bit of a stretch, but it's just like calling kaffir, Nick kneeling, people stick, more two hundred to stick to the script and talk. Well about the school, no. Here's what I'm saying is that the same thing as people saying, I'm uncomfortable with you, protesting or speaking out about an injustice that you see at this particular moment. Can you do it at a which feel really more comfortable? Sure. Saying, okay. But I mean let's you she should be able to say what she wants. Okay. The a lot of people that just wanted to graduate. And it was it was a moment for. I mean, I remember my graduation, I took my hat off when I get to get my diploma put Mickey Mouse years on. I didn't. The graduation for everybody because of that. No, no six of shared that. But, you know, even though we didn't speak, we've just got to PLO move put those on. It was I was once I was done. Valedictorian? Tom Russo and he gave a great speech about Vietnam. Right. So his brother died there. But I mean if you go back and you look at this is funny because I would not have thought of that we not done this story. And that speech, had people bawling you know, and he talked about it, but he said, what he wanted to say, right? No. Again, but again, going after somebody in, in in that kind of speech, I just have a little hesitant. We'll get more your cost coming up. A lot of people obviously about this. We'll get that next. That's nikki. I'm chips Keijo tip Franklin, K,.

"Santa Barbara county. It also may lead the pack in complaints about the fumes generated from marijuana growing. Those upturn noses have been mobilizing in recent months to stop the growth in growing. Joining us to talk about this is Nick Welch executive editor for the Santa Barbara independent Hynek. Hey, how are you? I'm great. Thanks. Okay. Well, first of all, why are there so many cannabis grow licenses in Santa Barbara county? Why does it lead the state in the numbers? This is great climate going PR and cannabis apparently really likes to follow the Pinot, this sort of the natural terrain and climate is reason, number one, but reasons number two is we had a huge number of pre existing medicinal closer relations. Going on in Santa Barbara county for the medicinal cannabis use. And so when the law changed to allow recreational voters approved pop sixty four all the pre existing operations into so clogs Ray market for poisoning. Ready to go a whole lot of the licenses that we hear about here in Santa Barbara where essentially thirty one percent of the licenses in the state of California are from Santa Barbara county. We have one percent of the population. Have two percent of the land mass, so it's just ridiculous disproportionate to some sense of statistical homogeneity. So basically a third of all of them are in Santa Barbara county. You're saying and basically from what I understand. It's because the county allowed these medical marijuana growers to be grandfathered into this new recreational with, with Neri any oversight like they just had to sign a one page affidavit. So you can easily lie about that. So, yeah, I it was essentially an honor system, and you just signed was really maybe two paragraphs and just I've been here. I've been doing it. And to county decided Rideau have the resources to track down if they were they weren't. So we're just going to forward, these affidavits onto the state as our housekeeping approval. "This is press play. I'm Madeline brand. We'll take a guess, at which California county has the highest intended number of cannabis cultivation permits. It is not Humboldt county. It's Santa Barbara county. It also may lead the pack in complaints about the fumes generated from marijuana growing. Greenhouse growers set up shop there in the sixties, and as, as a cut flower industry got wiped out by international trade. These greenhouse rowers may of whom pretty hardcore Republicans, you know, with Ronald Reagan pictures up there their room was, you know, shaking hands decided that the best pass to salvation and evolution laying cannabis. No, here's a Joe people actually thought this was a serious conspiracy theory for a while. That there was so much pot growing. That's cannabis growers were planting dead skunks on the side of the road. So people could say, oh, there's that's what you're smelling. The weed, there's Santa Barbara high school Santa Barbara area, high school is located on the main drag it has the most greenhouses highway one ninety two and full while there it was the teachers would come in early in the morning day platforms. It was very intense. I spoke to a woman who lives, very near their Jonas, busy, though. And she was telling me, you know, it makes her eyes burn. It gives a headache, she had to have 'em is her grandkids who have asthma won't come over. And visit so some people claim is really, really intrusive. Other people say it's a nuisance. I or a bother, or I knows it, it really doesn't throw me off my, my strike. Meanwhile, you have all these wineries in the area, and I think. They're getting a little mapped that Yoder might be turning off some visitors like people don't wanna come visit and taste their wines. And by their ones, it's hard to enjoy a glass of wine. If you're being buffeted by heavy duty odors of plant in full flower, now, a little critical, I mean, let's be honest. If one buzz versus the next, yeah, it's supposed voice. And a lot of people have have pointed this out that, hey, when the wine industry post moved here about twenty years ago, they were the pillagers and destroyers of the environment, and they were coming in and clear heading the oath, and there were ballot initiative saves ios his wine industry. Why destroy all the wine industry has figured out how to accommodate as heirs now the ones who are having the furniture of rearranged? I will say, though, that there is sort of overstated, but amongst some of the canvas rollers I've talked to. I have a high handed attitude or hey, you know, we're movie and real use pesticides like they do. And they go really acknowledge it say are disrupting people say are having people move over to make room for them. And I think that, that is part of the problem is a reality. I mean, if you've invested millions of dollars in, in terms of something that can be tasted into taste experiences being intruded on that makes a difference. He other thing here is the speculative pressure. This has on land prices rents, I spoke to a woman up in law, which is very poor town, the north of the county. She ran a children's Jim place and a canvas operation came in and bought the property that she had been renting. She wasn't allowed even to apply. They weren't even willing to consider her. And the rent says HR after she left about ten times higher. And everybody has his ideas is, this is a new gold rush. And they've charging rents accordingly. And really know if question is going to happen or train materialize right now, it's a lot of promise, but there's a liberties have yet to be saying Nick Welch executive editor for the Santa Barbara independent putting about the reservoirs into so much. Hey, thank you very much. So how.
