Kurt Becker's Stroll Through Racing History: Grindstone

"Only made six career starts but one of them resulted in a victory in the kentucky derby and burst onto the racing. Cd twenty five years ago this month with a win in the louisiana derby. His name was grindstone. A foal from the first crop of nineteen ninety kentucky derby winner dreidel rhinestones was owned and bred by lexington kentucky. Native william tian in the name of his overbrook farm center d wayne lukas grindstone raced twice as juvenile before undergoing surgery for a bone chip in a knee. But after a seven month layoff. He returned to the races with a runner-up relation allowance company at santa anita in february of nineteen ninety-six to start his three-year-old campaign. Despite having made just three career starts grindstone went to new orleans on march seventeen for the great three louisiana derby at a mile and a sixteen despite having nothing more than a maiden special weight victory to his name. Rhinestone was dispatched the two to one second choice behind local favorites arbs magic and it was arbs. Maverick stood and rhinestones way in the final furlong. Tony bentley had. The call takes me puts up. Magic hangs on the inside but it will be grindstone with the lead and sar magic. Grindstone when bill. Louisiana derby by war with terry daily with these victory that day grindstone was now part of discussions for the upcoming kentucky derby but he was lightly raced and no winner of the louisiana derby had won the kentucky. Derby splash gold. In nineteen twenty four grindstone stone would have one more prep race before heading to churchill downs. It would be the arkansas derby on april thirteen. It would be step up to a great two and a stretch out to a mile. An eight rhinestone would enter the starting gate as the eight to five favorite at once again. He would have to deal with the magic in the stretch. Terry wallace brings them home. Describe magic magic comes back. Takes at the magic of turn upset. Rhinestone was only eaten the neck that day but he would be heading to the kentucky derby with a lot of questions surrounding for one thing. Rhinestone had only made five career starts. No horse had won the kentucky. Derby on five starts or less since brokers tip in nineteen thirty-three for another. He wasn't even necessarily the best in these trainers d wayne. Lukas would be sending record. Five horses to the derby and lucas himself was reluctant to rank one above another. As for the rest of the lineup there was unbridled som- who would be the post time favorite. There was avenir from the west coast being trapped by a young trainer. By the name of bob baffert. There were skip away. Who had just set a stakes record in the bluegrass at keeneland. On the first saturday in may nineteen ninety-six. Rhinestone would have to overcome history. He would have to overcome highly talented and more experienced bows and he would have to make a furious. Run in the final furlong. But jockey jerry. Bailey had him in high gear. Dave johnson of abc sports with the goal of cracked late cabinet on the side of town. And here's optima to guide wasn't cabin on the inside was it baby. Mcquaid noted in the top urban grindstone and hit the wire together and it took five minutes for the placing judges to confirm the result of that photo. Finish but the winner of the one hundred twenty second run for the roses was grindstone. As one sports writer. Put it the kentucky. Derby distance is seventy nine thousand inches and by getting his nose in front of the wire grindstone had led only the final four but it was all that he needed five days later. Lucas announced that grindstone had been retired from racing. Following the discovery of another bone chip in the colts need may grindstone the first horse and seventy years to be retired immediately following win in the kentucky derby but he also has become the first horse in seventy two years to win both the louisiana derby and the kentucky derby he had won the first million dollar kentucky derby in history he had given lucas consecutive win and a triple crown race and he had made. Wt young kentucky derby winning owner and brief. I was never proud to stand next to mr young said lucas. Adding this is absolutely the happiest. I've ever been in my life. As a stallion grindstone would become the sire of belmont winter bird stone and the grand sire of classic winners mine that bird and summer bird following his stallion career in kentucky he would relocate to oregon and twenty ten where he would sire more stakes winners in the pacific northwest but the legacy of brian stone began twenty five years ago. This month with a win in the louisiana derby.

Money moves from Todd Pletcher, making just his fourth career start. Was a 32 1 in the morning line and is getting bet. Heavy. Todd Pletcher's Horse Down 15 to 1 South Bend. "Budget stakes. Nita will start in re number four bobby the desert code named after the two thousand eight turf, Sprint winner I believe we just kept turf sprint winner down the hill. I believe it was two thousand and eight five and a half wrongs. Maybe, it was oh seven, not sure five and a half furlongs. No more hill We feel the six. And it's unfortunate I wish they were still running down the hill, but now we get five and a half furlongs on them were conventional turf course, and there's plenty of speed as you may expect in this race number, one Phantom boss number five party town both the speed of the speed plane, and simply I think number. Four rookie mistake is better than this field. She's been in the money. All four tries on the senator turf course to. To wins two thirds. She's learned how to sit a little bit off the pace and come with a bit of a run. Six furlongs looked like it was a little too far for her last time out five and a half furlongs. I think it's a right between the eyes or hit. It's m right between the eyes and I think rookie mistake at five to two is a horse that I would single if I'm playing horizontal wagers. Bobby Newman, perhaps saying. She because the number two, she's so special on the boys. She beat them last time in an entry level allowance optional claimer where it appears. She was in for the tag. She'd runs through conditions. She was in for the tag. Nobody claimed her now. She's two to one morning line favorite. Boys in the desert coat. She is a perfect two for two at five and a half promos. Don't let the distance marker in the region form full you. They clump in the five furlongs in the five and a half. She's a perfect two for two at five and a half furlongs Peter. "All right here we go. We're back on racing down today. Episode Number Fifty. We got a lot of stuff to get to today. Three fifty three fifty point preparations on the docket for this week. In one hundred Fifty Kentucky Derby points up for grabs three more horses will be on their way to Churchill. Downs weekend. There's also a bunch of other stakes around the country this weekend most notably the grade. Santa Anita Handicap. So we'll get to all those book. I we gotta get to the action from this past weekend in Saudi Arabia and the conversation is coming up at. I've seen it come up in multiple different areas is about the winner of the Saudi. Maximum Security You know that is probably the most the Kentucky Derby incident and you know. I'M NOT GONNA come on here and you know say that the Saudi Cup has anything to do with the decision that was made at Churchill. Downs or anything like that or argue that the disqualification now because he's one twenty million dollars. Saudi Cup shouldn't happen I I am not gonNA come on here. Make that argument I just off you know really looking at it. It's unfortunate that happened because maximum security is really just such a tough horse. And you know there's not enough good things you can say about maximum security and you know that raise really showed that maximum security is one of the best horses in the world and obviously right now. The leader of the pack in the United States for older horse. Right now and be really cool to see this horse competing for your old year and you know depending on where he goes from here. Obviously you know. They already mentioned that. He's not going to Dubai. But just where MAC security goes from. Here I'm excited to see that. And what he has in store you know. I'm sure Eric will have some of his things. Say about maximum security. But that's something not lost museum. Fortunate -ness of the disqualification at the Kentucky Derby. Because you know this is a really really fantastic horse for sure. I mean he's slowly and steadily starting to shed that tag of being the Horse Sector disqualified from the Kentucky Derby even though it will always remember that way. If you were to continue what you did last weekend easily going to be more remembered as one of the better horses heading into this decade in this early part of the century the obviously he's now ten million dollars in earnings in at this stage career. It's only getting go go higher. It'll be interesting to see where he gets brought back. I met in. Saratoga is kind of the midseason point. Four the connections there But honestly I think he's already cemented. His legacy added great horse. Just you know like cigar did way back when of when he won the inaugural Dubai World Cup. Maximum security is going to be able to say the same thing for the Saudi Cup where he'd be a really good group of Horses. I might add Definitely was not lighten any sense I think every horse for the most part Ranta form in the Saudi Cub ibew. Probably the biggest surprise people contend but definitely not be By a quarter of a lengthy Iran. Huge She's also in so many other horses from the race but maximum security Kind of a rough trip was definitely a target especially for teas on Mutual Gustavo. Louisa has had to get created down the stretch. But you work down in that. Horses has tons and tons of heart. I don't really know I've seen a horse. Who Does Not WanNa let him worse by like maximum security does. It's quite impressive. How this works bears down to every time he races and I just think I I I think we all know. He's in pre twenty twenty if he stays healthy yeah. That was another thing that I didn't quite get that opening. Bid Is the fact that you know. Maximum security did all that won the race while Iran Ortiz was basically writing interference. I made the comment to Eric Baxter. Excuse jokers still out there kind of looked like a NASCAR and now you can say all you want about. How you know. Probably wasn't the best rider. You didn't have good character of Iraqis. I thought it was a good strategy on his part to do what he could to be. Maximum security obviously probably definitely in this country If he would probably would have been disqualified but I thought it was good on his part to do his best to win. Win The race. And try to keep maximum-security away because I don't think I if you run that race normally maximum-security just goes by with the rules over there. They run category One rules which unlike in America the disqualification rules are if you preventing a worse from running their best race. You get disqualified. There is. That's worse when when you run interference or not so if mutual Gustavo Iraqis does dat but the horse wins by Lincoln half. It's not a problem. Give what was within the rules so it was a good ride? Bhai Iran It was definitely a little malicious. I certainly Jason Service not lease with IRA. Teaser was on the first things. He made a comment about after the race. In the in an interview shortly after On national television I might add But at the same time that's I mean the races aren't one you know like a track meet where you can necessarily go between the lane. This horse racing and that kind of stuff can fly to an extent maybe a little over the edge. I think especially when acting security job inside. I really started to hurt an inside but I was happy that I read never intentionally drew contact although he was doing some blocking like you said NASCAR ask He never intended to make contact which I think was probably the safest thing and when he when he knew the horses about to go by he kind of backed off on trying to get through so are running more interference so while maybe was maybe a little militias It definitely was good race riding on his part all right so that. That's it for this stuff with the Saudi Cup Stripping back over Cross sees out before we get to the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks preparations that you want to highlight a Horse Zulu al folk who is turning into his own. You know I will highlight at about this point last year. This is were bricks and more bricks and mortar was not not saying that Zulu Alpha is going to be the next bricks mortar. Or anything like that. But you know he could do similar things to where it's very likely he's going to do similar things to what bricks and mortar didn't very likely that this is probably the top tier force in the United States. This year. You know at this point last year. Bricks and mortar was a great one Winnipeg World Cup turf and and then he had a great to race. I believe it was either at fairgrounds are one of the tracks Louisiana so to this point Zulu Alpha grade one winner Pegasus World Cup turf now. He's agreed to winner The Mac Ramadan down at Gulfstream. This past weekend. I think Zulu Alpha's in for a really strong really really strong two thousand twenty Keep your eye on him. Come for race like the turf classic the Kentucky Derby Undercard. That's where I would him go but not saying Zulu Alpha is an expert in order. But I'm not saying that he isn't either into Rena. Bricks and mortar was able to have consistent success last year is because all the worst is behind him weren't consistent. I mentioned on the show last week. That Group of forces that Zulu Alpa was facing. He actually used to be a part of that group they never were able to consistently put together strong back. That rates it's bricks. Mortar took it to a new level. Easily able to string together back Multiple consecutive good races in a row. And that's what God in his horse of the year title. And if these keep going the weather going is do. The wealth is going to be able to do the same thing last year Even though I was Kinda surprised after neier introduced the Turks Trinity Series that no horse really emerged from that as premier career force and to be chair. I mean we see that with Dirt horses as well on the on the Derby trail. They don't always shape out after the triple crown trail to be good and that kind of creates inconsistencies in the handicapped division like we saw maybe back Towards the end of maybe before the end of two thousand seventeen that you're got stronger as it went on but nevertheless China look into Alpa. Maybe like an expert in order. I wouldn't be surprised because once again the turf division isn't strong and If I'm going to throw one out there vitality is probably the best grass three year old male out there And I know. The connections are keen. Distract him out so he could be wanted content we know. He has loads talent. So at this point Zulu Alpha is primed at least stay home maleter force because so far. There are no challengers within a mile oven.

Who's the Champ?

"Bobby? A halt of the New York hot list is our first guest of two thousand twenty here on the gate now. The horse that won the Breeders Cup dirt bile beating Omaha beach is spun to run and he will be facing Omaha beach again in the Pegasus World Cup. The first major race of two thousand thousand twenty but maximum security will not be there and code of honor will not be there. Maximum security is waiting for Saudi Arabia. The world's richest race the Saudi Cup in February. It's very tempting to make this a political discussion. I'll only do it to the extent of saying with what's going on in the Middle East right now. How do you think that is going to impact whether trainers bring their horses over for the Saudi Cup and or the Dubai World Cup in March or maybe they take a look at that Pegasus again and say maybe we ought to just stay here that that's a very hard question to answer? Ah It's hard to understand how people feel I will say this. I am confident in saying that the people especially in Dubai. We're ruler of the country behind that I think they're going to bend over backwards to provide security and take care of the park I I would hope the same thing's going to happen in Saudi Arabia race and then just not become a outer tech or anyone but that is a question question that you just can't answer. I think it's very hard. It's an individual decision to a Lotta funny. I understand when people go play a lot of people who have no dog in the adviser to come up with answers of morally questions. And what they're gonNA do when not to you. Gary West was all set to run his voice Independence when it was nine nine billion dollar I. He was happy to take the fourbillion winter. Share the person. Just go to the Middle East but when you cut the first out of nowhere to three billion winter I'll get one point five billion something like that and you have just wants to you know once in a lifetime could easily win ten million dollars and probably turn around that month and win a twelve million dollar right I. It's hard because this is an expensive sport and as much as these people arrested of of money that goes into this so You understand it as of now. I haven't heard anyone saying they're going to change their mind about going. I'm sure people are a little bit nervous but I mean let's be frank. I think anytime you over. There is probably reason to be nervous. So it's just an individual decision and I wouldn't chastize anyone. Whatever they they decide because it feels like them? That's their call. It's not it. I make my own decision on my life. You make your own decision on your own life and I think that's the way it goes. Oh by the way. I think you're under selling the Saudi Cup. I believe the purses twenty million dollars. Well it's ten million the whip you get ten billion but it's it's one that that that's what I'm saying he gary West is looking at it. I will get sent. Don't get out of the home and billion dollars if I say in that term so you can when you look at it now. You basically have to win the Pakistan that in line with at one point I for share of the first compares to the ten million that he will win. Take home for winning the Saudi Cup where he will be the favorite and a one term mounting great definitely. I Dunno betting Saudi Arabia. But I know American pools. He's GonNa behavior and you running for stabbing tons of money. That's a pretty compelling nonetheless in the Pegasus World Cup you do have. Some horses is with some credentials including higher power. The Pacific Classic winner. We mentioned Omaha Beach. roadster for Bob Baffert is aiming toward the Pegasus. And you will be there. How do you see this first? Major race of the year shaping up that force right now in training maximum very doubt after that case to be made then Omaha Aubenas bunch of wrong especially violent eight might be the second and third bout with McKinsey right there with them so when you get fun to run and Omaha Beach I think he got a pretty darn good race. I mean it's interesting possibilities. Are the horses doing nominated at the box He's done. I'm very well. This is of course. A lot of people east might have remembered with Chad Brown Barrasso. And you know he was good you know. He got coming up. In the minor spot that West to John Adler Verona's ray thing all of a sudden. He's winning all these steaks and eat it. You can't east to Churchill even lost or any blocks. We'll see if he's going to be the ones that they decided to send into the race. It'd be a good one back wizar- people know this story. That fifteen thousand dollars who ran against maximum security and the world's most famous Amos. Sixteen Thousand Dollars Eight lamer and it'll be in there. I think it'll be a big competitive fourth. It doesn't I think have the superstar. One runner arrogate powerpoint chrome Omaha beaches in that category But it's interesting. It's good to get back into talking about racing and Bobby Hall. Nobody better to do it with so. Thank you so much barry. Thank you always chat that with you so when we come back here on the gate. The site of the world's first million dollar horse race is short on dollars and short on time time to secure them. Welcome back to win the gate in July of two two thousand. Nearly twenty years ago Churchill. Downs home of the Kentucky Derby purchased Arlington Park in Chicago for nearly seventy one million dollars. Arlington's owner Dick Duchossois had closed the track in one thousand nine hundred ninety eight and nine hundred ninety nine saying that he could not compete with other gambling businesses. The opened again in May may of two thousand presumably with the knowledge that a sale was coming at the time. Churchill was in something of an arms race against the stronach group. When it came to buying up tracts the idea was to create networks of tracks for simulcasting and cross promotion of races and Events in nineteen ninety nine Churchill bought calder race course in Miami and Hollywood Park in California and then bought fairgrounds in New Orleans in two thousand and four? This was meant to counter the STRANA group which began its buying spree in nineteen ninety eight with Santa Anita then they added Gulfstream Park in Florida. Both major Maryland tracks Laurel and PIMLICO as well as golden gate fields and Portland Meadows and Oregon stronach versus Churchill. Wasn't exactly the Cold War. But the battle lines had been drawn it it seemed that Churchill was the first to blink Churchill dumped Hollywood park like a hot potato in two thousand five just six years after buying it. Churchill said at the time that California has forsaken racing and its needs reports came from fairgrounds in two thousand thirteen that the turf course was too dangerous juris to race and that the track had been poorly maintained ever since the churchill purchase at the same time Churchill was trying any maneuvering possible to get out of its obligation obligation to operate racing at calder. Eventually the STRANA coned Gulfstream Park worked out a lease agreement to run the calder meet in October and November this year. Two Thousand Twenty is the final year of Churchill's obligation to lease the meat after which it may convert the track into a shipping logistics center. Or something like that.

Three Wins in 4 Years Is a Record

"James Good Morning. Good Morning Steve. Thanks for having me on hope your weekend. Well it did. It did and I thought I saved I wrote I write down as many selections. It's always tough for Breeders Cup because then the paper gets all gets a little a little sloppy and sure enough here. I'm looking now and yeah I do have it. Actually there we go there we go home. You were a Vino guy and and bricks and mortar and and then spun to run so yeah your share of winners Too Key around I thought was on higher power. Though I didn't have you know I got you written down for Dino. I took higher power stirred Flavian Pratt. What's up on them? I'll tell you play the Heidi wrote one favorite Donna Duluth below she. The brewers Juke juvenile given up Phillies runner-up but he had a win. had four seconds and fourth earners. I thought that was a really a great performance by him and You know he has the Kentucky Derby win on his resume junkies like have that really just A good showcase for an upcoming star in our rank agreed and and I tweeted on Sunday. I've discussed this a couple of times this week. His record is stunning. And he's got people would say. Oh He's only got three wins. WHOA WHOA three wins? Thirty eight mounts and this is only his fourth year as fourth year riding his sixteen seventeen eighteen nineteen at-bats. Ah But another fourteen in the money finishes and then a handful of fourths and fifths I mean the percentage is frightening. I mean considering considering the level of competition really outstanding and he gives he gives every virtually every horse. If he's got horse to work with he gives them a chance. It's definitely and you know I mean I think Santa Anita and hosted the Breeders Cup eight times previously and and and he was writing a lot of california-based debased horses and one of my takeaways was definitely that this this year's Breeders Cup with completely unlike any out in California before I mean just uh-huh it just. It really started on Friday where the first four winners had all raised it Aqueduct Belmont and by the end of it I'm you know I'm looking at it it it. If you'd looked at the charts that Saturday at at Saratoga you wouldn't be surprised to see our ad or ts in four races Castellano and Rosario win into each and then Jose or ts Manny Frank Ricardo Santana All winner races well and Joe Bravo and that's what happened. They took twelve to fourteen races and and all twelve of those horses that race in New York this year now very strong on that on that front and ah not to say that Just had the conversation with Nick. Lock about the euro's and there were there were solid efforts and solid board hits in addition to Iridescence win but The you know the and there were solid performances from west coast sources to bell. Athena's Bella Fina. At under under certain circumstances dances might have won. The united almost looked like a winner hundred yards from the wire There were there were plenty of of solid performances from every region In some cases. Look at Vino. Vino having been into California. I think counselor a lot. You fold in folding would ask. Did you know getting there early with Matali Actually Navarro to I mean in Navarro got there early with a chance. A Lot A lot of times the a Lotta Times. The juvenile turf sprang can be like locally based sources can do all your top two in that race were both based in California with Peter Miller and you the one hundred and thirty five bucks. That's right that's right. That's right his second his second in the race in three years. I'm just looking at the list to spun to run from Philadelphia. So you get you get a a regional kind of a B.. Track player are sharing sharing holiday for new. New York's thunder run actually ran in a mate. Nice at act backer. And the winner but I mean the parks and mom Sharing base at Far Hills at far hell and Maryland bred. That's a couple of times Toga. Yeah yeah everybody everybody got their Lixin. Actually when you when you kind of go through this And I'll just say I I came away. I mean granted. I thought the four big stars coming into enforces with the serious horsey. Our aspirations Bricks Mourner Corner Sister Charlie and Matola two of the four one I think it really does come down horse a year two bricks and mortar and Matola Louis. But I'm giving the edge bricks mortar. I thought it was fantastic campaign. He had been a mile or previously. Before you know getting hurt and undergoing that surgery and I like the fact that Brad Cox I mean Brown ran him. You know he never ran he. Random and six different courses six different states. You went from Florida to Louisiana to Kentucky Hockey to New York to Illinois and the California To win a mile and a half for the first time in his career so to me. He's a deserving of the year well and and driving home the point about the mile and a half for people that because they always beat all the same types and didn't stretch himself then no he did and and you know the there was even people that were incredulous about him going the mile and a half so you know that that score extra points Without a doubt yeah definitely and you know to me One of the Mike Smith that made the point After a couple Oh. He ran second on a pair of privet favorites midnight zoo in Omaha Beach. And he's made the point that he'd right like those races back because it was hard to 'cause over that track track but to me it was more so that those horses were caned on the rail going into the first turn. Blue Prize was tenth early. You know tolley Holy Arosa could be five or six minutes off the pace. But they're jocks really at. That did a great job keeping them in the clear and I really thought midnight. These to you You know continue just to be in traffic through into the far turn. And when she got out she finished great as a case I mean they the great job on on TV and other highlighting it where I think of a blueprint. It's got the jump on her because of the trip the greed and it and it it also. It should be noted for people that are you know insisting that the track nobody could close well. WHOA that's not true? which is simply me? Just look at the chart for the distaff. What do you mean nobody could close at that? Just you know Omaha. Beach closed closed In in as well came from often and others whitmore made up. I mean it wasn't going to get to the winners and the the exact pair But he closed Idiom really had down below chicken that juvenile fillies and that's when the track was absolutely at its worst deepest pissed most impossible right based on based on the figure and in fact. It's funny because yesterday. Paul Matisse was talking about how difficult Friday was to make figures and then it was echoed by Jerry Brown on His On his experts board board. Somebody brought up. Paul's conversation and Jerry also echoed that the way the track changed from the you know the middle part of the day to by the time even the the juvenile boys ran so typically you would if the juvenile of the males run more than two seconds faster than the phillies. You'll get say their way better than the nose Philly but I do think it was. It was a track getting off faster later. And I. I'm I'm not down on British idiom or Donna Boise at all even though that right they came home. I think they should be still terrific runners. And you know it's it's hard to gauge coming out of the juvenile being real adobe guy Exactly what that means going forward so into court definitely Nice Horse Court Vision You know hasn't isn't had much success at Stud but he's bread You know fire. Classic types with that pedigree of his female family has a lot of stamina influences. It just doesn't have much class. You won't find any stakes winners really in that immediate female family well your final the final takeaways. My final take away so I just you know I you know I was. I thought you know it was a tragic end McGowan crew. I mean it was just a Really hurt to see that happy at the very end After a thirteen of the Breeders Cup races have that happened in the ashtray and and racing. Definitely I think has some issues and concerns going forward. the people in the industry maybe do a better job messaging but I still remain. Optimistic is the horserace fan about the future and I was. I came away like in the Breeders Cup. I thought there was some great performances and Looking for work once again the next year very good well. We're looking forward to the action this weekend give us some thoughts about Churchill had terrific card even today yesterday and Wednesday were good and of course the Commonwealth on Saturday the feature the Grade Three Mile and a sixteenth. The three year olds on the grass. It is an absolute war. Some thoughts about what's been going on while everybody was paying attention to Breeders Cup and and we got to look forward to this weekend. Yeah they had three stakes last week and In the MEA mischief flatmate go for the sale and and look good. She loves Churchill Downs Multiple Grade. One winner there in the Divine Queen got off to bad start. Art Never Fire in the In Saturday stakes chill Lewke and Sally's Kirwin breakers Swin She tried the Indiana Oaks folks earlier. This year didn't run good for Dale Romans. But she had one or last two allowance races by like about fifteen lenz combined and ran a rug. Good Rice debris greet Brian Cox's

Steve Haskin Discuss What Is True Horseracing

"Listen I don't WanNa put a damper on things or anything but you know to me. This was not was not true. Horse racing at least as I know it And I I will say that the grass races were were all good. I have no problem with that but after after that a lot of things that just get ugly for me you know. I don't WanNa see horses and jockeys coming back on on a track labelled fast looking like they just been rolling in the sandbox I realized being zealous in their attempt to make detract safe which is understandable expandable. But in my opinion they did. They did at the expense of the racing I mean who's who says you have to make a track excessively really deep and tiring to make it safe. I mean they're they're faster race tracks. I go back look at the aqueduct over the years and they're all in in highly even even the old old Santa Anita track was always safe. Saratoga I mean these are basically safe racetracks. You know so. So what's going on now. I can understand but sometimes you can overdo something and you know. And as much as as I liked Vino Rosso in the classic and you know one all kinds of bets on them To tell you the truth I can never ever watch that race again for abuse reasons to search too much 'cause actually liked Mongolian groom ally and and actually thought at one point in the race that he looked like he was gonna Finish in the money but you know all the repercussions of that. which most I think most of it is just nonsensical? In fact I just read somewhere that you know the vet came that came out. The trainer came out and said it was perfectly sound. You know and understand these things happen. There's no there's absolutely no blame here at all. Just the fact that it happened. That hurts just like it's hurt from all the other incidents in fatal fatal incidents in the past. And you know I go back I was there for roughing it. I was there for go for one. That was there for prairie by you. I mean there for a lot of witnesses and every time you go through a little bit out of you and you know I I I just sort of get attached the Mongolian. Groom not only from a betting standpoint but I just like the connections and and the and the the horrible irony of it is the fact that you know right after the race. He stated emphatically that. They're not going that they don't want to put up two hundred thousand dollars and and then you figured some offers would come in to to get a piece of it and put up. Put up the the supplementary fee and they said you know now talking to date decided to change their mind put up the money and and and then this happened so I know how absolutely devastated everybody. Everybody was there So but you know that's not even what I'm talking about when I'm talking about About the debris come you know I. I just don't want to see the best distance. Sources in the country stagger home the last half a mile and fifty two seconds. That's not resource time time I you can make the track slower and slower and slower but it was weird because the the formula was the same old data. We're going faster early legitimate. The sprint races were run fast but I mean come home the last year from fifty two. I mean that's ridiculous and you know it wasn't that the horses were bad. It was at the race crack. You know that. They poured truckloads of sand on the day before the Breeders Cup. You know and speaking of the classic Nick and that Racetrack. I certainly don't want to see the V to bed. Closes in the country. Never even pick up their feet and get beat fifteen lengths and seventeen links like they're running through quicksand. And I had agreed with Doug mcgann. He's original plan to skip the Breeders Cup and was totally against it when they change their mind. I knew the odds were stacked against them. Being three year olds shipping West I quoted that statistic that they were over twenty two in the past. I and especially with the track favoring speed at that time and I had no idea that it would get even worse for him when he got there and I don't think I don't think shook did either either. I think he was Kinda surprised how how track was playing how deep it was and how come from behind horses were were just spinning their wheels. We also hallway so you don't WanNa see that you know you just don't want to see any kind of track bias when you've got the championships at stake. I mean it was a lot at stake. Code of honor but you know so. Now he's got to End His Campaign very ingloriously. But that's just the beginning You know you look at Look at the beach I mean I I I don't WanNa see arguably the most exciting and talked about horse in the the entire Breeders Cup. Who's been on just off the pace going six furlongs to a mile in an ace in every one of his starts eight and a half lengths back at the half mile? Call all of the dirt mile and still five lengths back at the poll. You know. He's he's still runs one of the best races of his life despite the track and he can't even get close to you know I'm not taking anything away from spun to run but he can't even get close to that horse. You know who was beaten nine links in the Haskell who I I was at parks when he beat gray magician by heading the smarty Jones he ran well in the Pennsylvania Derby but he's still fit and then suddenly turned into a superstar overnight. Overnight gets a one ten buyer and some small stakes at parks despite never having run a triple digit Byron his life so I mean Karama beach I mean even to get close to that horse and to come from that far out of it and where the heck was cold front you know in twelve career starts. He's I've been on the lead or within a link to the lead in every in every start in the met mile. He's on the leading forty four and one for the half but in this race he's running V v six and a half lengths off the lead. I mean I don't get that. Where was he so you want to run? As soon as he went out there you know and opened up to three lengths. She said nobody's nobody's going to catch the source on this racetrack. And like I said I thought I thought the Omaha Beach Randy terrific race to get second and even staying with the dirt mile. Yeah I don't WanNa see the second and third choices you look improbable and Mr Money. who were both being very highly touted touted By their trainers and many of the experts. And who would training brilliant leaguge swimming out there never picking their feet up then got beat nine of ten ten and three quarter lengths. You know now you get to midnight. Be Sue I don't WanNa see the best filling in the country unable to make up an inch aground. In the last days the mile with a final creates run in under forty seconds. You know what in the world we should be doing running ace at the top of the stretch You you know I mean it was a was it. A bad ride was just bad. Racing Locke was was big track. I mean take your pick but affiliates not supposed to be that far back and and if you watch the race you could see blue price who you know. Give her credit you know. She wants to come from off the pace but he had a made her she had to make a move move back stretch and it had lead ready at the eighth pole you know and then you know finally you look at Friday. I don't WanNA see your race with into the strongest W prospect. Seen in years. Completely fall apart. You have a forty five to one shot at twenty eight to one shot and thirty nine to one shot come from first third and fourth to finish one two three and the three to two shot running second stops to a walk getting beat over twelve lengths. You you know and then you know meanwhile before five shot and erase stumbles at the start and finish dead last so to me. That race was a total bust. In fact to tell you the truth by the way if somebody had told me a week before the Breeders Cup that we were GonNa see the Derby favourite less weekend and it would not be a it would not be any of the three favorites more. Would it be scabbard. Nor anybody else in the juvenile but it would be the winner of the national stakes the next day by far and away the most impressive two year old. Maybe most impressive overseeing the team your weekend and then you go to the other dirt race. On on Friday juvenile fillies you know we have to brilliant phillies coming off. A dominating wins literally staggering home rubber-legged in in an agonizing slow twenty seven three and seven and two for the last sixteenth of a mile. I didn't raise sources. Could run that slow so to to me. You know this is just one. I'M GONNA forget very quickly but this would have forgotten about it by now. If I didn't have to talk about out of here I listen. I'm sure I'm sure a lot of other people feel are being too harsh. But what can I do. It's just the way I feel. You know maybe it's just I've got too many Committee races behind me.

Breeders Cup 2019, Melbourne Cup & Vertem Futurity Previews

"Time guest to the show this man is responsible for love American racing he was part of the old eighty or one of his favourite beds is the box and not only is he abetting genius he's also one of racing's nice guys it is my absolute privilege to welcome to the show Barry Faulkner on bushing onto one suit box exact barry it's about time you made your debut in the final furlong my friend India and great to have you onboard as well looking forward to your thoughts your expert thoughts for what should be too exciting nights of racing on sky sports racing and you can hear in the background making his little giggling cab can be over the last five years we've been doing this together so we have to have the main man on board Pete Foreign it's Al from sky sports racing welcome back and it's a pleasure to be here that was my first final Furlong podcast ever back in twenty fifteen when I was living over in London then and I think back to that very fondly going from being a regular listener to getting to be on the show on a regular basis it's always a pleasure and I'm happy to be here no you're kind man my friend and it's good to have you aboard as well we couldn't do this without your insight as well and speaking of that let's get a brief snapshot of things are we go in there because Santa Anita is normally gold for the Europeans I think this is the record amount of time that track has has held the Breeders Cup but opean runners have never gone away from Santa Anita empty-handed there have been some tracks where we struggled but entries are down this year the pre entries were down the overall European and particularly UK and Irish representations down the obvious exceptions this is Brian and is this is to do Peter and we discussed this in the final film podcast earlier in the season with some of the difficulties some of the series difficulties that sent any face regarding fatalities because let's not forget it was only a few months ago that the Breeders Cup themselves had a meeting to decide whether or not sent an easy would keep it and at the time the word was it was going to be taken off them have things been sorted out and is there still a little bit of nervousness in the air ahead of the biggest meeting of the entire year to be honest I hadn't thought about the welfare issues as a reason why the euro participation is down I was thinking it was somewhat ran them but it's not it's not a crazy thought but I'd like to think that with all effort that's been made in California on you and with California racing together this surface right and say that if that if that is the underlying reason that that that's a erroneous Yes eroneous logic I'd like to think that we've got a service that we was going to play hopefully in a manner that's fair and most important Paul safe over the two days of the Breeders Cup and for the remainder of this fall meeting at Santa Anita well the fact that you haven't been thinking about it tells me that the been less issues lately they've hopefully then iron things out so that should be good barry what are your thoughts on it we donated with the West Coast the entries this year the same level as a two years ago in Delmarva we've got one more race this year significantly down on the entries interest for the British Company in Kentucky last year I doubt in general I think it's a disadvantage for horse shipping California hosted Slip Shipping East but they do that so relative time there's an east coast and they just as far as the truck goes treated hundreds from work and they've done significant amount and hopefully they will have resolved issues they undoubtedly how dealer in the year the cause of the lack of interest from this year I don't really think civilian position to say okay well hopefully things are all aren't out and we can be really excited about the race meeting I genuinely am the other thing to talk about is pace and draw bias because there's definitely draw bias at Sente- Nita impeach you've got some big about that well it's what we're trying to hit a moving target addressing this issue but I think it's something worth considering part of the safer surface I was talking about has to do with the the rail not being gene the place to be more typically in American racing in twenty twenty and we've seen this at a lot of places and it's not super consistent but I mean like Saratoga for example the inside was really not where you want it to be much of the meat now we don't exactly know what it's going to be like for the Breeders Cup something we have to pay attention to because it is very difficult down on the inside you got some short priced favourite to ordinarily I'd like quite a bit core drawn down there but as with all time you try to play the bias game at my friend Mike Baloney the professional horse player says if you WanNa dance with bias you best do so on your toes and that's very much the case but what we've seen at Santa Anita it's very unusual typically good inside means good things for speed and bad inside means it's easier to come from off the pace but what we've seen at Santa Anita this meet on Sundays is as part of the the surface also there's a lot of kickback and it can be difficult to close so you wanna be up towards the front but you want to be up towards the front and not necessarily down on the inside now whether not this is going to be the go forward to be the case for the Breeders Cup I'm not GonNa make any assumptions about it but I'm going to be looking for it and I'm going to act quickly and upgrade horses on I'm talking about the dirt of course horses on the dirt who are going to get that kind of preferred trick and what about you would you be reacting than in real time as well because I remember Breeders Cup where I think it was the year in Vizor won the Breeders Cup classic he was the exception to the rule but everything drawn on the inside like almost if you were on the dirt install water still to you immediate advantage for whatever reason the way that was playing out so I know that you've been studying for the last week or so barry and particularly since the drawers been announced yesterday and today but will you be reacting in real time to how the draw plays out on the night on Sky I think the key thing looking oh bison shifted very very careful because we know sort of simple Harlem hospital you know you'll get a show class FA across favorites join inside wins by St and some inside draw boss that's not indicate indicators you get along show them means how to take on they didn't hangs around and then finishes a close fourth that tells you that the drill by so you hundred very careful how you look at the data it's being presented you you call you see what you're saying if there is the current vice that let's stay alerts and try and take advantage so that we can get maximum gravy so over the two nights all of it live on Sky I've got a brilliant promo to pray at the halfway stage here but let's get straight into the Breeders Cup juvenile turf sprint I'm almost afraid to say the name for the reaction from Pete Four Hundred L. Kamari dear we've got four wheel drive the good as we are getting a decent price seventy two but the terribly unlucky horse at Royal Ascot four wheel drive is currently a best price of nine to two if you look at the races dot com there's allie making the trip over to represent the Europeans to be fair that's for seven Crisford with old friend Frankie Dettori on board as well so there are the three that had the bedding was the awards what are the representation Ena Brian sending over King Neptune with Ryan Moore who will be writing all of his main hopes for the week Barry and I will talk about the group one I stakes which would be run at Newcastle just before we move on Saturday that's a fascinating races has been reopened but Kamari was your goatee the horse for Roy Alaska he's too from to since he has been he was a long odds on favourite in one of those races short price favourite and the other are you sticking with the my friend she's the real deal Kamar very impressive as you pointed out did everything but win at Royal Ascot on ground that she didn't love and has looked so good in the starts since particularly in the last day showing new dimension coming from last I I had ripped up my ticket practically after they broke from the gate at Keeneland that day figuring out what you can't win from their managed to get the job done anyway and has looked very good in her track were park as well she worked out with down for nowhere the other day and really went to the toying with bound for nowhere in a work and then all he went and did is run a massive time figure in an impressive victory in his race last week I think she sitting on go I think she's square price four wheel drive is another ward runner who is very talented is actually done better on the clock Kamari has I plan on getting Kamari to win yes and I'll play a forecast exact with a four wheel drive over Kamari to back that up in just taste. I'm very curious to hear what you guys think of alley as a potential one to upset the apple cart I just don't know I love him I I don't know how well he's going to be sued by this by this configuration of the very sharp five furlongs around dead but it's Kamari from me

Handicapping the Breeders' Cup

"It is finally here the world championships the Breeders Cup for the thirty six time and for the tenth time at Santa Anita it's time to handicap the world championship hip and for that we bring into our experts one we've had regularly and one for the first time we welcome back Ed Derosa of the brisket handicapping service and for the first time we bring in Molly Joe Rosen we followed her on twitter a lot it's good to finally bring her onto the show so again we said we're not going to handicap all of these races were GonNa pick the seven or so that we think have really good competition and will go with those and we'll start on the Friday card with the juvenile a race that has been diminished a bit with the defection of one of the early favorites Max field for Godolphin so we're really left with three big horses here to talk about Denis's moment the favourite eight rings and Scabbard Dennis's moment has been very consistent through his writer in his debut and then just missed a track record at Ellis Park can you really call a two year old and overwhelming favourite. What do you think here let's start with molly I think it's right open race I could not touch horse at eight to five not as you said not with two year olds you know making third and fourth fifth career starts I mean to me that just is crazy and I love him think he's phenomenally talented could wind up being the second coming of Secretariat obviously he's a freak of nature having won his to really his to start saying oh he's got that through the writer and the debut but you know he's one by twenty one lane I mean you can't knock a horse like that Dale is great with these types of horses he's prepped well he's looked great you know you take nothing away from him but eight to five in a eight Horsfield because not a MAC field scratch I can't touch a horse at eight five I do think it is a really wide open race I'm GonNa look at other horses you know take nothing away from eight rings also a horse who has done nothing wrong also worth who lost a job I do think a horse like scabbard for me is more interesting this is a horse who breaks his maiden by five then steps up and they had some has some learning to do and Eddie neely is great with these types of horses and I think if you're looking for price and you don't WanNa go towards one of the more so obvious sources for me a horse like Scabbard who's on the improve has really done nothing wrong in his career but you know seems to have maybe you have to overcome some some tendencies to find rebel trips of course to me like Scabbard is super intriguing? Ed What do you think well we're we're going to write off the rip because I'm all in on Dennis's moment and he's the only horse I'm using molly Jo Sung as praises appropriately and with the scratch AMAC's field unfortunately is is backers aren't even eight to five now so if that wasn't good enough for you Molly Joe I'm sure you're not gonna be happy with even money or six to five but the this horse You know the maiden win at Alice just blew everyone stores off so what can you say super professional in the Iroquois though defacto second career start I read got a handle for this horse got to test drive them so to speak and we've seen Dale ship out to the who've no at Santa Anita perform well with not this time it was second do horse I had a lot of respect for classic empire so I think he's early the horse to be an in a very competitive Friday car he's my big single day I'm with Molly I think scabbard had some trouble in finishing second today this is moment in the Iraq war and I think it's GonNa come down to those two I'm not discounting Dennis as moment but I think scabbard has to be more seriously considered than five to one lead move to the filly and mare sprint I'm really torn here about cafe when we get to the Saturday card I mean she won the Edgewood and the Miss preakness so maybe I'm not as impressed as other people are by the way she runs ed can she run her race from the rail She can for me either the bigger question and the rail is a question the bigger question is is shipping out west and she is not coming for a bar and that is it's been out there very long Dale with Dennis's moments that we talked about shipped out about a week ago see Asmussen's been there with his crew for seven her week so I am eager to see how horses on Friday to that hadn't chipped in versus the ones that have been there awhile local horses etc if I perceive a bias in that regard that might sway me offer as the favorite I will say on raw talent I absolutely think she is the best filly in this field for test was incredible energy titan or Churchill albeit against lesser was what you would want to see he coming into a race like this offer race like the test so I'm a believer but keeping an open mind and this is one of those cases where I am going to use information as it becomes available throughout the Friday card to see how liberal liberal I wanNA use her on Saturday molly what do you make of come dancing I'm not saying how do they poll she's got two and a Half Lake leaving don the destroyer next toward the inside at third special relativity first half of the year then the second half clearly has talent what do you make of her you know she's obviously you know a a really really lovely horses cool to see Carlos Martin on the big stage I I've known Carlos a real long time and he's just a phenomenal horsemen and She did have you know crazy good first half of the year her her win margins were certainly bigger flashier there was certainly more space there but running second to midnight visa in the VIPs you know other than that she's comeback her ballerina was beautiful her gallant bloom was beautiful I do worry a little bit about whether or not she can run in a straight I'm and that especially at Santa Anita we've seen over the years what was her name the Philly that ran second to beholder in the the distaff I wanNA say executive privilege we've seen horses who may not be able to run in a straight line not get there in time Santa Anita in the past and that concerns me a little bit when you do have other really consistent Phillies in here like FFA ed do you see attention long shot here in this race because I'm not loving come dancing I liked but don't love cafe what about dawn the destroyer will become a from the back and I guess you were saying you gotta see the Friday card to see whether anyone really can close at Santa Anita but what do you think about a long shot here that's actually and afterward oh so is this a matter where if you don't like the two favorites you chuck them and use them all I could see that as a strategy especially if you really where let's move to the turf to the mile not the dirt mile we'll get to the dirt mile let's go to the Turf Mile and here you've got to Phillies the headliners got stormy and Uni but now you've got circus maximus with a real European threat here it's not been the best year for eight and O'Brien really do you trust circus maximus here not in any way shape size or form and not at that price just in case you're wondering if I

"Southern California's famed Santa Anita park after our Jim Roope has been reporting on a rash of racehorse deaths. When it comes to thoroughbreds breaking down as it's called in the sport of horse racing. There is one undeniable fact athletic endeavor athletes, do get injured Willman is a longtime thoroughbred owner and breeder as well as director of publicity for Santa Anita park. And he's not talking about the jockeys. Although jockeys are considered pound for pound among the best athletes in the world of sport. He's talking about the Ecuadorian athletes the horses themselves at Santa Anita since December twenty sixth twenty two of these athletes have sustained injuries so catastrophic they had to be euthanized Twenty-two in less than three months. The track was examined reexamined. The fault was record amounts of rain affected the track. Nothing was found. However after that twenty-second horse broke down and was put down the focus turned to medications, among them Lasix ADR. Drug use to reduce exercise related bleeding into the lungs ninety five percent of racehorses, Iran Lasix, Santa anita's owner, the strongest group has now banned Lasix on race days and his phasing it out completely the animal rights group pita has long called for the end of the use of Lasix and other medications that the organization claims masks pain and smaller injuries allowing horses to be rushed back onto the track and training and racing. And that's where the catastrophic injuries occur Cavallo year. Moa pitas, senior VP she says while she would like Lasix all out immediate banshee applause, Santa Anita for what is doing and other moves like limiting the use of writing crops or whiffs to corrective or safety measures only the medications that could be given on a daily basis would have to be pushed back they're not allowed to give horses. The medication if they don't actually have a medical condition and they've also ended chocolate therapy, which is a credibly painful and injection of steroids into the joints. There are many who say medications, especially Lasix are not the problem. Willman still believes this the rain effect on the track and things undetectable. Fans are more readily leaps out, and maybe the claims took onto the percentage when you're that compassionate equipment respect. I think that's the lead. Indicator says either way the number of horse death is unacceptable and in the last two weeks. There have been none the horses have been training. Again. That's the objective. Then we're open for clean safe training and racing. There will be a hearing of the California horse racing board on Thursday. And woman says it's hoped the board will approve racing to resume on Friday. Jim Roope, Los Angeles ten til Robert workman is in this Monday morning with sports NCWA basketball tournament the first two rounds or down were at the Sweet Sixteen with that coming up and nearly saw number one. Overall fall Duke squeezed past central Florida, seventy seven seventy six the nights gave the number one overall seat a huge scare leading by three in the final minute. Duke superstars, I n Williamson drove for a basket over UCF giant taco fall drawing. The foul that sent fall to the bench with his fifth foul. And Williamson to the free throw line with a chance to tie with thirteen seconds to play. He missed the free throw. But RJ Barrett's put back put the blue devils on top Williamson finished with thirty two points. So did central Florida's all reductions who missed the tip in just before the buzzer that would've wanted pretty good game in also in Columbia, South Carolina, the Virginia Cavaliers ousted Oklahoma, sixty three fifty one finally a fairly easy one for the Cavs. Of course for eliminated in the first round last year as a number one, and they're never going to live that down in Columbus, Ohio, Tennessee, outlasted Iowa Eighty-three Seventy-seven that went overtime the vol's led by twenty five in the first half. And gave it all back. But grant Williams save their bacon. Sporting six of his game. High nineteen points in OT also in Columbus, North Carolina nailed Washington. Eighty one fifty nine twenty a piece for Luke maye and the little in Tulsa, west regional Texas Tech barrel Dover, buffalo, seventy eight fifty eight holding the bulls to just thirty six percent shooting. So the red raiders are in the Sweet Sixteen for a second straight year. Also in. Tulsa in the mid west region. Houston harassed Ohio State, seventy four fifty nine. So the Cougars are in the regional semi's for the first time since the fi- slamma Jamma days thirty five years ago to which Virginia Tech says thirty-five years, that's cute. They snuffed out liberty sixty seven fifty eight in San Jose in the east regional their first trip to the Sweet Sixteen since nineteen sixty seven they didn't even call it. The Sweet Sixteen back then there were twenty three teams an odd number of teams in the NCAA tournament. That was the sixties they use peach, baskets and everything the other game in San Jose saw the two double digit seeds go at it. Oregon overpowered Keller vines seventy three fifty four on a game of long runs. Both ways. The ducks the only double digit seed to advance so Cinderella as big flat web feet this year. Saturday. The winters were Michigan state and Michigan LSU and Kentucky Auburn, and Gonzaga and Florida state and Purdue the Boilermakers pulverizing the defending national champion Villanova eighty seven sixty one. So the regional semi Sweet Sixteen shapes up like this on Thursday in the south region in Louisville. It'll be Tennessee and Purdue Virginia against Oregon and in the west and Anaheim, Gonzaga, Florida state, and then Michigan and Texas Tech Friday, the east regional in Washington DC as Michigan state LSU, followed by Duke and Virginia Tech they've met this year. In fact, TEK one the last time they played and in the mid west in Kansas City, North Carolina, Auburn and then Kentucky and Houston top three seeds from all four regions reached the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since two thousand nine in the NBA Sunday the warriors with the pistons one twenty one fourteen they get their fiftieth win for six straight year. And they're back in first place in the west because the Pacers rock nuggets one twenty four to eighty eight that clinches a playoff berth for Indiana bucks, Hornets, Spurs, rockets flippers and Lakers were all winners. Lebron James had a triple double NHL hurricanes. Blackhawks island. Capitals and blue jackets were winners. And from the NFL patriots all world tight end rob gronkowski announced his retirement after nine seasons seventy nine touchdowns, plus twelve more in the playoffs only. "Below. So we're at the same time. We're continuing to do tests on this end to make sure that we can match this year string one of the advantage is that at Santa Anita. We've got a huge amount of baseline information. This is one of the dozen tracks in the country where we have had a full set of tests on every six months, and it Santa Anita. It's going on for well, it's been going on since they've had the dirt track. We did it for the synthetic track. But obviously not relevant. So that's what we're trying to benchmark it too. At the same time. We've got look at all the other issues, you know, any horse related issues, and you know, that's not my expertise. But that's at the same time, given the pack that it's multifactorial we have to look at the track saved time. We're looking at courses. Now, it's easy to say southern California's had roughly seventeen inches of rain since October. I normally L A gets fifteen inches for an entire three hundred sixty five day calendar year. And that's why there's such a problem. Now, what do you say to making the weather a scapegoat? Well, that's not a solution. We get a lot of rain in New Orleans. We handle it there and one of the challenges for the industry the industry needs to step up. I'm not gonna defend the industry on all this because there needs to be a more systematic approach to how we maintain tracks. What I've seen consistently is that when we have unusual weather. It's a challenge for the tracks. So that would be a dry period at Gulfstream or fairgrounds or this your Churchill or a rainy period at Sunland park or Senator Nita. That seems to me like that's a training and communications piece, and and and and and the industry at this point needs to step up and make sure that everybody has what they need. Dennis Moore is a huge advantage out there because he remembers the years when they had a lot more rain in southern California thirty years ago now, but that's no solution either. I mean something apple then it's more. We need to be able to duplicate those skills. And I think that's what we're looking at right now is we're dependent on my technology combined. But then it's more skills, and we need to duplicate that and bring that to the other tracks. You know, we make progress in some areas and in other areas, it seems like you know, we have one bad year. And it seems like we're we're back in the battle days, and that to me is a lack of training lack of information lack of communication. We're talking here on negate with Dr Mick Peterson whose team is conducting the track inspections. Santa Anita that facility remains closed for racing until March twenty second. Now there were twenty one fatalities at the track since the start of the Santa Anita meet the day after Christmas, we all know that of course, most of the talk has been about whether something's amiss on the main dirt track, but four of those twenty one deaths for on the turf course, how much attention are you paying to the turf what we've done is we step back and looking at the turf track that also again suggests that we've got a broader issue rather than just remixing the dirt in the dirt on the main track. We we need to look at the turf track. Santa Anita has committed instituting a more complete monitoring system on their turf track. They've got a quite an experience superintendent on the turf is named Jesse. And he does a terrific job. But again, I'm not sure how much experience he has with this, much rain. And I think strana group has done a good job there reconsidering when they take. Braces off the turf, and you know, that's obviously a challenge for the for them point Anchalee. But it's also a challenge to be closed. They been now let's say you conduct all of your tests your team conducts all of the tests and wind up finding nothing unusual going on with either the dirt or the turf course, which is where you seem to be trending. You know that if and when you break that news to Santa Anita officials, and eventually the public that news will be taken two ways. Glad to hear the tracks are considered safe. But also, what could be causing these deaths is there's something darker going on here. So how it is that color the way you'll present your findings to them. Well, I guess the best case of that was you know, a few years ago we had another spate of injuries at aqueduct. And what I think is success at naira at point was we didn't find anything. With the track. And so Naro doubled down on the amount of data that they were taking the track to see if there was something. We're missing a clear example of that is we need to be measuring moisture content during races and not just once a day. And what I think is really one of the biggest challenges is pursue pretendants is when you've got a floated track that you're running on at what time do you open that when do you make the transition to a hero track right now, they're not even a information aside from race times? And just observation, you know, we need to give them more tools. And let me tell you another the other group that needs more tools than the the track needs to provide more information. That's the trainers. The trainers are having to make decisions about the fitness of their horses. And if the speed of the track varies dramatically from day to day to moisture content. That's not an easy decision for them. And they're still trying to get the orces ready for. The races. So by providing more information to the trainers. You know, there's some trainers just have a feel for it. And you probably don't need to give them more information. They have the judgment. But there's a lot of them if you'll give them more information, and they learn to integrated into their training routine. We can help bring the horses up to the right level of fitness and not over train them. So it's really the responsibilities on me from the technology side of the tracks. From the information site to provide more information to help support the trainers to do their job to to predict the horses and get them ready for races hinted at a number of potential improvements that could be made in the way tracks are maintained and the information communicated. Do you think there is a greater good for the industry that will come out of this? Or will this be considered a case specific situation? Every indication to me is I'm hopeful that we're going to get better. Now, you should call me back in. Month, and or or two months, and if we haven't made any progress, I will tell you because, you know, this isn't when I signed up for I'm engineer, I'm not a horseman, and you know, I got into this to protect the animal and to protect the ride or and by protecting the horses and the riders that takes a commitment by the industry. I've seen every indication that strana group is moving in the right direction. And that there's other players in the industry that are supportive, but you know, attention is is something that's transient. And and and I appreciate your concern because I'm concerned too. Dr Mick Peterson of the university of Kentucky co-founded the racing surfaces testing laboratory in his part of the team working to make Senate and Nita safer than it is now thank you so much for a few minutes for sharing this with us. And we look forward to hearing more updates. Thank you. How would you like to put rides for a jockey based at Santa Anita right now. Other than the fact that there's no racing. What's the problem? We'll talk with the agent for floppy on Pratt about how they're dealing with this right after the break.

"Next ten days, which in seven to ten days, everything is very likely in the sense that as soon as you know, there's rain falling in California the afternoon and and this morning Dennis Moore track consultant was announced on Tuesday to rejoin sandy team after stepping away from that position with that track. At the end of the end of December more has a lengthy history of working with tracks that Los Alameda del mar and Santa need until the end of last year for several years and is widely widely respected. So when he gets in there when this surface does dry out over the next few days and has a chance to analyze the surface. He might be able to come up with an answer to win racing can resume and how to go forward. Los Alameda is going to be a more active role in training of these sandy debase thoroughbreds here in the next few days. They have some stall space available there to accommodate extraordinary. Is if those trainers want to move those horses down to town to Los hours about thirty thirty three mile drive, thirty three mile van ride, and therefore they could they those horses could stay active to a certain extent is one mile track there, and it's it's not heavily used quite a lot of the quarter horses that are racing there at night, those that breed is not train like thoroughbreds. Do. They don't go to the track every day. They go to the track a couple of days a week. So you don't see the same level of activity on day to day basis attracts such as Los Alameda. So that you would attract such as Santa Anita. So there's an option very close to to Santa Anita for trainers to utilize if they want to keep those runners, you know, galloping jogging or even having workouts, then also several stable notably Baffert Doug O'Neill and Johnson for among amongst others have horses in both Staples. Because there have a limited number of stalls at Santa Anita. And then they have horses. At low, Sal that might be maybe suited to loselle as an individual. Or in most cases, they're either very young horses. We've yet to run might be horses who were just coming back from arrest or something who are just in the early stages of training, and they are prepared there before they're sent to sanity to get closer to the racing days. And also you see the same thing situation at San Louis Ray down straining center, where there's a lot of that's in northern San Diego County in Bonn, and there's five hundred stalls there that that can be used for similar purposes. Peter Miller is base there, for example. And we certainly know that San Louis Ray has been rebuilt after what happened with the fire just over a year ago. How much space do they have how many horses can they take for ninety five four hundred ninety five or so so there's there's a good amount there if capacity, although they're they're usually pretty popular it's usually quite a few horses. They're speaking of where two year olds go when they arrive to the race tracks in southern California loads of two year old star. They're they'll they'll just you. It's much more tranquil setting with a smaller. Smaller capacity. You can just have a little bit of chance go slowly with horse instead of the more hectic and activity at a racing track where it was coming and going on the morning afternoon basis. "And then making the sequence Johnny impossible for small people that that I take issue with. What what difference between whatever's? Because what happened to Santa Anita is. Then in need it not enough to make it good. Yeah. You would like that. But yeah, this is mine. I mean what what happened on Saturday and undoubtedly don't forget don't forget. I if no low contest, oh doesn't scratch out of that Lewis. Everybody's got use to at least a second horse. If those I singled Muccio Gustav with that point. I'm sure other people went to mutual Gustavo in gun metal grey and other people would have had to use three horses. So that would have changed. That's why. When when who was it that asked me the other day what I thought the pool a hammer asked me on Friday what I thought the pool might be. And I said, I don't think it'll be as big as as some people want to think it's going to be just because there were some places to go narrow so and and it turned out you could go even more narrow in that particular, you know in the Louis as. That and mutual Gustav to you pays advantage under the wet drag conditions that made it difficult to conceive him getting beat. I mean, truly it's back to what I said a little bit earlier Jaffer look to races and say is their chance to K off. It's going to happen in this race. Not not because I want to happen. But in my anti-capital because I go through this race and not like anyone or that. I go this racing like seven horses because at that point. You gotta saying man, I gotta get close to the all button as possibly can. Because this is where it's going to happen. And. Other other side. You raise your say, jeez. You know, if Baffert three year old this is got speed. He's. Santa Anita the plot. He's. Because if you go deep. Let me let me save year. You got cracks key can't have mall. If you go deep one spot, you gotta pull up the other spot. And and you get busted up. That's where I got. I got busted up on Saturday. Because I I went the burly I caught the one thirty one shot, but I couldn't I couldn't spread enough. I think us to meet shows the other one I think I get that name, right? The other one that I think I used after raise I kick I was. We gotta shoot things off. So I need on. But you know, I couldn't use more. And maybe I would have got into Pete force twenty one thousand for twenty cent wages. Yep. Yeah. Pretty good payoff and not paying paying your opinion about holding the pool. I think Santa Anita was that. They won what one six. Were they at before when the day began one one point something, I think I don't think they got the two yet and Gulfstream right now at one point something, also, maybe one point five. So when you think about what these major tracks handle? On a race by race day by day..

"I when I when I was twenty one I started when I was fourteen riding horses, and when I started on the track I was sixteen Pleasanton, California, still going to high school, and and would have to gal finish up and head off to high school. Then when I was twenty one I moved down to Santa Anita. So basically, I just turned fifty two and I've been in southern California, then I was twenty one. So yeah, a good thirty years plus at the Sandinistas circuit. So I've seen a lot of trainers. Come and go, I've seen the older ones the younger ones and everybody in between. I've always kind of been a horseman horsemen. You know, I I worked for different trainers. I'd have a second-string Pomona. I worked for yourself. I worked a system for Dan Hendrix. I've helped Bob Hess junior. And you know, never afraid to help other guys and do whatever I could to help them kind of always flew under the radar didn't have the best of stock. You know, just never got that big horse that you kind of need to attract bigger and better. So I I just plugged along. And then there was a few trainers that you know, when I went out of town because I was coming back and forth quite a bit between Amazon and Santa Anita and emerald downs in Santa Nita. So a lot of trainers would say, wow, you know, that's pretty, you know, I wish I could do that, you know, go to a smaller need, and and get, you know, do pretty well and be in the win column and stuff like that. Like right now, we we also have horses at your paradise were second in the standings behind runaway in Robert Tina deodorizer. But you know, we we like to run our horses where they fit and win our share. But my hope is now with building the resume and a couple of different location that I can slowly get bigger and better horses on the southern California circuits so year round del mar Santa Anita and even that small Los Alameda meat is is fun. We've got you've got those nice winds under your belt. And I think, you know, it's your work ethic that allows you to do that. Because you're you're not you've never been afraid to get up in the morning and do your job and flying all over the place. I know it can be a struggle. But you have that desire in you that you that you want to be at the top of the game. And that's that's what drives you a lot of guys say they want to, you know, have a stable at a smaller track or whatever. But they don't want to do the work, and they they might find somebody sent send him over in that that person's basically training the horses. But I know you try to be hands on as much as possible. And and it takes commitment. Yeah. Definitely. And that's why I was on a plane every week. I I wanted to be able to not let too many days go by that my hands wasn't on this horses. And that's why I wanted my personal touch. I've been fortunate enough to have assistant trainer that's been with me. A couple of years knows my program. Really? Well, so that bond is really grown. And and just like you said the other thing I always try to do is. I'm always trying to recruit new owners to score, you know, thoroughbred horse racing. It's so fun. So exciting. It has it up and downs. You know when the horse run good. Everybody's a little down. But boy when they win there's nothing like that feeling, you know, go into the winners circle. I mean, they're walk on clouds for about a day and a half just so excited with that win. So an until they taste walking down to that winter circle and getting their picture taken. It's hard to describe it to them..

"John Henry, that's the horse that won the the only two million at the age of eight. Yeah. Willie shoemaker once in a silky Sullivan. You can't do thing with them. You just have to allow him to run his own race at his own speed in his own style in the first quarter. Or maybe the first three eighths, and you just sit there, and you wait hoping you won't have to wait too long. Because when he really gets going you have to be alert or he might just leave you behind, and then you hold on for dear life of his twenty-seven starts. He was in the money eighteen times with twelve wins one place five shows Jesus that's a hell of a lot. Wins. It's a lot of wins men. His career earnings were one hundred and fifty seven thousand dollars with the purses being much smaller in the nineteen fifties. I guess you could figure out what that is worth today on December the seventh nineteen fifty seven he won the one mile one point six kilometer twenty five thousand dollar Golden Gate Futurity after making up twenty seven lengths the jockey said when I asked him to run he answered and ran like a machine like a rocket. You felt it was something special because nobody had seen anything like that. It takes a hell of a lot. He says it takes a hell of a lot of running when you're twenty when you're twenty links behind you have to be greased lightning. A record crowd of sixty one thousand two hundred a record crowd of sixty one thousand one hundred and twenty three attended March eighth nineteen fifty eight Santa Anita derby. That's California's major Kentucky Derby prep prep race. Silky Sullivan faced nine of the three year olds including old Pueblo who had defeated him in the breeders champions stakes race, the ten horse field for the twenty-first running of the Senate of the derby. Add some heavy hitters. They got any are CARA was one of the jockeys will shoemakers one of the jockeys, Johnny Longden. These these guys are all Ishmail Valenzuela. These guys are legends men. They're like hall of fame. Jockeys aboard some pretty pretty heavy hitting horses. And there was silky Sullivan with quote, Bill shoemaker Willie shoemaker board during the first five furlong silky Sullivan, fill twenty-six links off the pace. But when shoemaker asked him, he responded shoemaker remarked. He knows when to move inside. And then out he knows when to make winning move. He's so smart added Cornell that he could win at five eighths. He's got speed whenever he wants that. He just knows when to turn it on. And that is so you saw this horse at Santa Anita wet. I saw that horse twenty years after he raised I saw him in the seventies. And he was just an old man then and core and horses like people kind of get sagging guts you ever seen an old horse. Yeah. The mid section. Yeah. And he came out with that big horse gut. But man when the when the crowd cheered. He he like, I said he. Those hind legs up in the air. And look like he was really happy. That's just a little bit of the the history of horse racing and a little bit of the history of Santa Anita, which is where we are all going to be or at least a couple of you guys along with myself and some of my friends at Santa Anita on March the thirtieth there at our suite at the beautiful Santa Anita for a day at the races. And on that day the stakes races eventually going to be the Santa Ana stakes to two hundred thousand dollar four year olds and up race every weekend. There's a featured racist stakes race with some large money. The derby Senator Derby's a million dollar race. And the San Felipe is like a half a million. And there's a few that are. Well, why did you get one of those general kill's already fifty pick the date more convenience than for the? All right. When we come back in the world famous Phil Hendrie show, he had made us Leonard who's going to be talking to us about Donald Trump, and the hamburgers that isn't Mavis. Maybe it's literally St. bozo. Both the on to a discussion of it around table..

"Think of Santa Anita and and December twenty six opening day using that as the the demarcation and the maiden the best maiden performances, the best allowance performances, the best of the steak performers and this past week, basically that no low contest, oh is that we're gonna come back to clearly that that was an effort that is notable and global campaign the Stanley off helped runner for Kevin plank for sacking of obviously a player. And then the Darren Miller. Effort this past this past weekend that we we've talked couple of times about so far this week, and that was high crime and don't know how quickly Miller is going to be able to stretch him out. You know, he might be confined to one turn for now. But give us before we talk about the Lecomte, how about some of those undercurrent performers in the Maidan ranks, and and so forth. Monday, kind of my review day countdown to the crown and then by Wednesday the entries come out. So I'm starting to look forward. So, you know. Fortunately, finished up, my reviews for the week, and and the high crime crying, you know, ranks very Finally, I I haven't as the third best maiden win going back to December twenty six nationally global campaign still dreaming, I thought was really impressive at Worrell on New Year's day, and then high crime I thought I'd write in their next. So to the top three I think made performances so far in the young season. Going back to the twenty six you mentioned you have come from all streaming and high crime, I thought was really impressive. How far Ligo? And and how quickly really be stretched out. You know, they're not a name that you associate with, you know, triple crown performers, but along the trail over the years, you know, when he with the Silverton hills. And and they tried to get there. You know, when they had a horse who might be that kind there. Now, we'll try to get there. So I think we'll get that opportunity. You know, sometimes you a horse may win for Christoph command or something like that. And you just say, okay, probably not gonna you know, really push. Towards a Kentucky Derby date, maybe Belmont. If they're good enough that sort of thing like that. But I think with their Miller's name that we used to see in you know, in that always every year situation, but he can get a horse there. And I think that he has connections that want to get a horse there. So I think high crimes and interesting to watch and they're a Stubbins. I thought ran really good at Santa Anita on the fifth of January rallying up the inside. I know it was on the grass of for Doug on. But again, you talk about people who are going to try to give a horse chance to get their right? I mean, if Doug on the got a good three year old with a nice closing kicks on the turf horse is going to get a chance on the to to show that he may or may not belong noble contest. Of course. Like, you said winning go Long John Sadler. You've got, you know, a good group starting to bubble on the underneath side of things, you know, show live winning in allowance company down at Tampa. I thought that was quintessential countdown to the crown. Right. I mean, you've got a half to two Vena role. So Vito did well hamp obey down pod. His own the Tampa preps over the back decade. Plus, you know, whether it'd be the same F Davis of the Tampa Bay derby so much except in those races. So you have a horse dot the natural Lincoln pedigree. You've got a horse whose, you know half. Brother went this. Same route Todd has got multiple three year olds every year. He's gonna have to divide and conquer can't run the ball in the fountain of youth per se who's gonna find spot for them. So was like so alive is really, you know, me that that one that we follow and say he hasn't hit the the big stakes time yet, but buddy will I'll tell you. What's interesting up northern California? If you don't follow Golden Gate..

"Races. You could always go five five at Gulfstream in three it saints. Fair amount. From the standpoint of you know, a lot of those Gulfstream races are so wide open. I mean, there's no question Gulfstream offers very good betting races in terms of especially those turf races. So and I've been lucky I've hit a couple of decent payoffs through the years that goal stream that way. So, but like, I say the rain should be out of our way after Thursday's. So that should be good for me. It's so Saturday might not be too bad. Anyway, from from the weather standpoint, so we're crossing our fingers on that. But but we got a lot going on. I'm looking forward to the Pegasus to you know, we have it. We've had exceleron city light training lights out here at Santa anita's. They get ready for the rubber match in the in the Pegasus, you know, city alight beat accelerated Oakland part, but then accelerate beat city late in the Gold Cup at Santa Anita. So those and then they each were breeders kept winner accelerate one. Breeders Cup Classic and city late when the Breeders Cup dirt mile, and so it'll be interesting to see which one of the two prevails in their rubber match at least between each other and for loving and Pratt here in southern California. The rising writing star is picked up the mount on audible for Todd Pletcher. So that was some pig. Asus news as well. So we'll talk to Todd in a little less than an hour, actually and John the weekend. At Santa Anita hit a couple of highlights. I'm gonna get to John sheriffs. Probably tomorrow gonna run out of time today. We're gonna talk the soon as you, and I are done. We're going to talk to Don Schnell who came down from the Canadian north west and winds with escape clause wins the lockin Yata. And I kinda tongue-in-cheek was saying that Mike Willman was combing the the annals of Santa Anita history for the last Manitoba bred to show. Show up and and win a steak it at say at the Nita. But otherwise, you know, there were a couple of things we didn't we didn't talk about Friday's Stronach five result, which was fairly formed full. There was one decent price and then Golden Gate as seemingly happens now every week old and gate was a little tricky to to close things out. I think what the about eleven hundred think paid eleven hundred and change on on Friday, but it did include that maiden race that we had we had talked about a little bit. And it was Michael McCarthy with Sutro the Philly going the mile in eighth on the grass and Mike Smith aboard for the violence. Philly beat confidentially the mile on the turf try to graduate from these role. I was drinking. How you've done through that whole under for barn. At people listening to your show again. Monday cash the nice bet because Hollander for talked pretty glowingly about calf moon bay. Yup. And Kapnin bay went off at six to one and was victorious in a race in which here from the Bob apper berm bet down to heavy favoritism and got moon bay one in a photo with Mike Smith aboard. And and you get a six to one winner there. The daughter of boating, my stir, but colored or for tucked the, you know, how much like that belly quick, quite frankly, and that with something resonated with me at a boy, that's that's why we ask about the some of those races. And of course, the other day we had mitts Don little gave out, and it was also somebody else do with the it's been a it's been a good start to the year. Unless unless you're the host. For beat the hose that it that it hasn't been John. A marvelous story with this escape clause, and she was just so visually..

"First Friday of the new year and the weekend preview pretty much focused on Gulfstream. Hat full of steaks on Saturday. Santa anita. Couple of nice graded stakes as the three year olds get started in particular. Also, the turf San Gabriel. Those will be the the focus Santa ynez to on Sunday at Santa Anita and kind of caught up on his much as I could. Last couple of days and. Will intersperse some of that commentary and reaction as we move around. And we'll go down to Florida with with Martin McGee in the first hour Marty. Entrenched for another winter at Allendale and sharing the. The responsibilities with Mike Welsh down there. Michael be on the back end. We'll get get a little bit of clocking. Info from from Welsh late in the show. The era of clock report and the the maiden race that. Early on the card, and then the mutual macho man will see who among the the three year olds Mike is interested in and Marty is tracking a lot of the. The early Pegasus news keeping track and in fact yesterday with the. Important actually, given given McKinsey status that Leofric won't be participating and. That could open the there's the negotiations and the. The push poll of getting the the field assembled for Pegasus. But. Just a just literally forty-eight hours ago. There was a question. Well in what slot wood MacKenzie where where would they Seidel in not that? Not that the stakeholders in those that have bought put the down payment in yet to put a hundred thousand as a down payment. Sure. Sure, any number would would be happy to have McKinsey to partner up with two to run into into Pegasus. We'll catch up with Marty and get some of that early news and also just from yesterday. We mentioned that that third race that featured orbs full, brother. And a second start for the groupie. Dow tap it Colt for Mandy pope, and they ran second and third respectively. It was Bo terro it was that second time starter that it started his career. With baffert. And is that sizeable time off had really a year basically on the sidelines and came to Bill Maher, Donald Burto. The whole bread. And frankly, fifteen dollars was was kind of generous in a in a six horse field. As it as it turned out the money came in on on the orb, brother. One of four to five and it's funny wrote to me actually went off second choice. The warrants running for Jeff Brown and. The groupie. Dow. The group four year old. Six the basically went off at that. Seven to one. So. Be another another chance for both of them later later in the meet look for look for Shoghi RAF next to come back with personal time and tap ability and Petero patera ran wealth took over a Louis Sayas. Set up shop and. Look good doing it. And. Race going back to Wednesday. We should slip in. Can't be your park. The Medaglia d'oro. And is it happens Petero also Tagliaferro, but the Larry best the one and a quarter million dollar. Philly out of Siwi hill. That came on Wednesday. We didn't get to this yesterday. And she abused at Akwa. Breeders Cup weekend. Okay. And kind of. Had a sluggish start. And. Pass them horses. But you have Brown making the point that. Felt that turf was going to be right for this one. And. Look, very good eighty four buyer. Breaking her maiden. On wednesday. So. Cambier park. For Larry best oxo wearing the the red jacket with the oxo ball. And of course, Sealy hill, the wonderful, gene, Melnik, campaigner and. Daughter revolt point, given and Celia was a hell of a nice. She's had she's had. A couple of nice runners. So keep an eye on that one for I think, I would think the pretty tough to expect a steak try sooner than later for for that three year old filling. So we'll catch up with Marty. We're going to check in with Jeremy plunk. To start the conversations weekend preview and.
