"Betting with Bobby presented by Caesar's race book from four to 6, Bobby joined by horatio de Paz who's got two horses running in stakes races, graded stakes in New York and Tom quigley seminar host at Santa Anita to talk about a terrific weekend out in California and then tomorrow night at 6 o'clock I'll join Bobby on The Weeknd stakes preview as we'll go through 13 graded stakes Saturday morning, the equine form presented by twin spires from 8 until 11 eastern. If you've got thoughts on this week's races, give us a call. 8 8 8 9 6 6 four 7 7 6 8 8 8 9 6 6 four 7 7 6. I've got a question for you Dave about that, but with horatio de Paz. I mean, I wonder how he got with Michael Ryan and train him for him. I mean, because he's got that be your best in. She's an Irish bread Philly by rar, which, you know, if you see an Irish Brett Philly like that, you almost expect to see it at least I do in the barn of guys like Chad Brown or Belmont or other prominent trainers. So that's a pretty good guess for a horatio de pause, I think. Yeah, no, I completely agree. And hopefully Bobby can get the answer to that question deposits has two good ones going this weekend because he's got a be your best in the great two miss grillo, a noble emotion in the grade three, Belmont turf stick, so it'll be interesting to hear that conversation tomorrow on bedding with Bobby between four and 6 p.m.. What do you have going on over at brisnet right now? Well, our big special this week, I mean, we've got an opportunity to hear from Benny south street earlier, but we're going to have PPs, we have a free PPs when you make a bet on that track through twins for Churchill and San Anita by the trip note pros. So check that out at check it out at Bristol dot com. You'll see more information about that under our past performance section. And we'll have more information as well on the brist and social pages on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. This weekend is loaded with breeders cup prep races. And I know maybe we shy away from saying breeders cup prep races because these are 500,300 $1000 sort of races. If you're betting New York racing this weekend, James. What do you do with life is good? One to 9 that price on the morning line suggests an absolute cinch. And if you look at the four horses running against the life is good, it's sort of hard to imagine them beating him. That being said, if you're playing a pick four or a pick 5, I hate horses like this because you get no value if they win. And if they lose, you're ripping up your ticket. Yeah, I'm one way perhaps to maybe take a look at it is even a pick three, but you know, not playing like a small denomination, you know, maybe being a little selective in races around. I mean, you can do that as well on a pick four, especially if you have some strong opinions in the races other than the Woodward. But yeah, I mean, it looks like a single and to me, you know, there's some vulnerable singles from time to time and I'm wrong playing against horses, but this is just not a good group. I mean, keep me in mind, you know, I do like that horse a little bit. You know, moving forward for pletcher. But no way, I think he's going to be good enough to challenge life as good to on Saturday, Dave. If life is good runs well and wins, where do you put him in the kind of second tier behind flight line as we handicap the breeders cup classic? Well, I mean it depends a little bit on how much speed there's in there because let me just say this. I mean, you know, I mean, beating fight line is going to be a monumental task, but we saw in the 2020 breeders cup, especially like on that breeder scuff Friday, where these horses like Nashville and others and they didn't win many, I don't know if he ever wanted any other great at stakes after that, but he went out and ran 6 for a longer wire on one O 7 and one or something and, you know, people are saying he could win their readers have sprint the next day and the next day, you know, it was one off the pace by whitfield. And so, you know, to me, that track though, when my whole point is, I mean, there are other races as well. Nicks go in the dirt mile. That trike completes speed favoring at times. And if you have a horse like life is good, even though he's got to go tit for us in the British cup classic. He's definitely among the top tier of the contenders right behind flight line with epicenter and taba, I guess. Right now, those are the three that are the definitive main threats in a sense. Because but what life is good? Obviously the tip for a long question is the major is him for a long distance as the major question mark. But his speed is dangerous. Before we call it a night, I wanted to get your thoughts on a couple of the races out west this weekend. There are several breeders cup win in your in races. I'm fascinated by the Santa Anita sprint championship where you have forbidden kingdom making his first start since all the way back in April and the Santa Anita Derby. First versus older, long layoff and is the morning line favored over the veteran CC rocket who may be a scene better days. I think it's an interesting field though with the lightly raced kid Corleone total fino who was just sensational in his North American debut. Did you have an opinion in the Santa Anita sprint championship? Yes, I think forbidden kingdom is going to come back and crush them. I do. I just don't think there's enough space in that race or, you know, I just think, you know, I look at his racist sprinting even that same. His race is sprinting last year. We're okay. And he came back in that San Vicente and I thought he ran just terrific. I thought that was a monstrous performance. He obviously had to pursue the triple the Derby in a sense when he won the San Felipe, wired a while like he did. But longer distances were never going to be in the cards for him. The breeders cup will be a pretty quick task after he crushes these resources on Saturday. Pretty quick turnaround, but he's definitely got a shot at least. You know, he's sort of like gecko zoo to me, those sources have a lot of class and you're asking them to do a lot in a sense, but they got a shot wired a wire. And I said whitfield, I don't know why whitmore won that brigade's cup sprint. What about the awesome again? Bob Baffert has won it 7 times. He's got four of 8 horses, including the likely favorite country grammar, was there someone you liked him there? You know, you know, you know, express trained in really run. He quit by the far turn and the Pacific classic, but he runs better races insanity. So if anybody's going to be country grammar, it's going to be, I thought express train, but you know, I wouldn't be surprised to see country grammar bounce back with the victory because he didn't run poorly in that race. Advanced hands and road advance on that race and I read it and he was like, one could excuse him if he thought he won the race. Flight line was so hard in front of him and he was so far in front of royal ship and third that, you know, he was all by himself. But he's good enough to win that. He's run some good races in Southern California. I like winning the gold cup last year at Santa Anita for Bob Baffert, no surprise if he bounces back with a victory. Well, James, we appreciate your expertise. Good luck in your wagering this weekend. Hey, thank you so much, David. Always a pleasure I enjoy talking horses with you and with everybody in our audience the best of luck this weekend. James Scully from brisnet and twin spires on our brisnet dot com call in show.

"To put up the money himself, knowing it'll attract some of the greatest racehorses from the east. Winning a race like that will force war admiral's owner to take Seabiscuit seriously. Except, even with a purse of $100,000, were admiral's owner turns down the offer. Disappointed but undeterred, Charles decides to continue with the race anyway. There will be some great horses there, and at some point wore admiral will have to face him. According to the movie, the race includes some other great horses, we hear names mentioned like special agent, Indian broom, and the one to worry about Rosemont. When we see the race, Seabiscuit shows a slow gain through the pack, slowly, but surely he passes one and then the other. As they come around the final turn toward the end, Seabiscuit is in the lead. Then with the end just in sight, Rosemont comes on hard. The movie snaps a still photo that shows Seabiscuit falling short by a nose at the finish line. The text on the image says it's February 27th, 1930. Well, the last number is cut off. We know from history that this race took place on February 27th, 1937, and it was just like the movie shows at the Santa Anita handicap. However, in my research, I couldn't find anything to suggest that Charles Howard was the one that put up a $100,000 for the race. That was just what the purse was. Earlier, we also learned that Seabiscuit lost Rosemont not once, but twice, and as we learned earlier, those two races were in between sea biscuits first streak, the three race winning streak, and the massive 7 race streak that the movie shows earlier. So the timeline in the film is a little bit off here. After the loss to Rosemont at Santa Anita in the movie, Tom is upset at red. He tells red that he warned him about Rosemont coming up at the end. That's exactly what happened. How could you not see that Tom yells? Red replies, I can't see out there. This is when a new bit of information is unveiled. Red is blind in one eye. Tom is more than upset, but Charles calms him down, repeating the exact line Tom mentioned earlier in the movie about a horse when he was mending. You don't throw away a whole life just because it's banged up a little bit. This is sort of true. I mean, I don't know if Tom yelled at red like we see in the movie, but it is true that red Pollard was blind in his right eye. The movie seems to heavily imply this happened when he was boxing earlier in his career, but in truth, it was the result of getting hit in the head by something being kicked up by another horse while red was a youngster. It rendered his right eye permanently blind. But it was a secret that red capped throughout his whole career was this YC biscuit lost to Rosemont?.

"Still has it a length and a half to Rockefeller. McKinnon swings out for the drive. They're at the top of the stretch and new grains still loaded at the 8th pole, builds up a two and a half length lead, Rockefeller can't keep up with it stablemate. They're followed by McKinnon and oviya class a big step forward and start two for newgrange who makes every polar winning one in the sham stinks. So new games goes wired a wire kind of tracked there by Rockefeller throughout and Rockefeller was in second, clear of the rest for out. McKinnon started to make a little bit of a move I thought, kind of on the turn and thought he looked okay, flattened out a little bit down the stretch as oviatt class came and grabbed him for third. So I am kind of curious if they do take one more shot with McKinnon on the main track because it's pretty tough to close into decent to good horses 24 and two 48 four at San Anita like going a mile. You know, and they came home and 25 and three. I mean, not a super slow come home time given what they went early and so you know I would be curious to see McKinnon one more time on the dirt, maybe gets a more favorable pace set up or a pay setup at all. And it has a chance. But I think part of me is rooting for that horse just because I like Nathan McKinnon the hockey player who's named after Eric Johnson, who's one of the owners of the horse. He's a defenseman for the Colorado. Avalanche. He's named a few after teammates. I know there was a land of skag. I think there was a cadre, but I don't remember if that one was his or not, but Kenan was one. And he was saying that, you know, the guys in the team are all really into and stuff. So it's kind of a fun little side story when it comes to a kid. One of the more exciting races of the weekend, I thought was the Joe Hernandez stakes at Santa Anita hill on the turf was supposed to be downhill. They broke from out of the shoot. It was originally scheduled for the downhill, but they had obviously a lot of that rain in the first week. And they're going to just be cautious. That's how I assume that's going to go over there, but beer can man. Ran almost too good to lose was just stocking the early leaders grabbed the lead in mid stretch for floppy pride. This was kind of a classic rispoli Pratt finish. Now we've gotten so used to seeing these two run one two and responding with chewing gum circled up on the outside and just able to get beer came in. You know, didn't really dispose of his rivals in mid stretch. Like he took the lead, but just grinding, grinding, grinding, and then for a split second there about the 16th pole. I thought he was going to slip away and wasn't going to get caught. But the chewing gam came and nailed him right on the money in the $250,000 Joe here. So that's a tough photo to photo to lose. That's my guys too my little red feather buddies. It's a 100,000 photos sorry gear and Billy, but Bill Mott getting up with huberto rispoli. I thought I read somewhere too. It might have been really, really cold in the interference. Well, he got himself a wind in the Joe Hernandez. So just a fun day though at Santa Anita as a whole, the lock in the United States should mention that too as time goes by the runner, stocking from just off the pace and then blowing their doors off at a very, very short price beating Park Avenue in that one. Let's take a quick break. We come back we'll talk a little bit of Gulf Stream. We'll talk a little bit about the Jerome and aqueduct. We'll start at the Jerome at aqueduct is a weekend recap addition. The Jason bean horse racing podcast brought to you by inspires. The Jason beam horse racing podcast brought to you by twin spires. "Weeks later, New Year's Day returned to break his maiden, winning around two turns at del mar as the fortified favorite and defeating both bondholder and candy boy. The former would win the grade one FrontRunner at Santa Anita a month later, while the latter would become a greater stakes winner of over a $1 million in his career. That juvenile crop of 2013 would have plenty of talented individuals. Shared belief would reign as the champion two year old male emerging late in the campaign and winning the grade one cash call futurity at the end of the year. And a cult named California chrome would step to the head of the class the following season to win both The Kentucky Derby and the pre mistakes on the way to horse of the year honors. So where did New Year's Day fit into this picture? He was not champion at two, and he wasn't the best at three. In fact, he didn't even race as a three year old having already been retired by that time to the stallion ranks in Kentucky. New Year's Day would make only three career starts. Two of them at del mar we've already covered. As for his third and final appearance, it would come on November 2nd, 2013 in the breeders cup juvenile at Santa Anita. Following his maiden victory, New Year's Day originally had been scheduled to run in the grade one FrontRunner at Santa Anita on September 28th, but a slight fever caused him to miss just enough training time that baffert decided they would be best to skip the FrontRunner and simply train the colt up to the breeders cup. It would mean entering the race off a 9 week layoff. But the owners gave baffert the green light to proceed. New Year's Day fired three consecutive bullet works at Santa Anita during the month of October. And then he drilled 6 furlongs handily and his final prep for the breeders cup. Martin Garcia, who had been on the cult in the mornings would get the call to writing and a race for the first time. As breeders cup weekend approached everything seemed to be falling into place. The only question which remained would be whether or not New Year's Day would get the pace scenario he needed. He had been slow and destroyed in these two prior starts and he would need someone to set some hot early fractions if he were to have any chance to make a rally from the back of the pack. Complicating matters was the fact Santa Anita had shown a speed bias, the prior afternoon to the breeder's cup juvenile. Throw in the fact that New Year's Day had a new jockey was trying dirt for the first time and would be running without the anti liter medication Lasix for the first time in his career, and there were actually a lot of question marks. But he got the hot pacing needed, and that was all that mattered..

"Had a great work in Santa Anita last week and did a good week in here, you know, settled in pretty nicely. So we're feeling happy about everything. We're just hopefully we got a little good luck and how great is it to see fans back out here? Don't those cheer yourself fantastic? Yeah, a little bit of normality in America. It's great. Good luck. Thank you. I would have seen the connections all making their way with their Derby contenders around that turn. They are just about to the finish line, but going the opposite way that they will come in just a little while, the run for the roses is now just 37 minutes away in conjunction with NBC sports you are listening to the 2021 Kentucky Derby on H RN. You're listening to exclusive coverage of the 147th Kentucky Derby on HR RN, presented by twin spires. I will tell you from experience, what you think is a good post can become a bad post at the break. You could get squeezed. You could break slowly. You could stumble. And what could be a bad post can become a great folks if you break well. You try as a writer, at least I did. I try and save as much ground in the first turn as you can. Because chances are you're gonna have to go somewhat wide starting to make your move on the second turn. And my philosophy was by the wire the first time without being knocked around too much. About where you want to be. You can never be exactly where you want to be in The Kentucky Derby early. If you get to with a link or two, I want to be mid pack. I want to be around 6 or 8 links off the lead. If you can do that without getting knocked around, it's a win for you and then you take what's given you after that. Sage.

"These are three year olds going to go a mile in one 8th on the turf. We've got a big field of ten, and it brings back to the turf course. A horse that we know very well. Rock your world. He looked really good. The first two starts of his career Dave, on the turf. One race at 6 furlongs, one race at a mile. Since then, he's been trying the best in the business three year old wise, on the main tracks all around the country, ran in the Santa Anita Derby, The Kentucky Derby, the Belmont stakes, and the shared belief. While he was good enough to win the great one Santa Anita Derby, and he was not that far behind Medina Spirit last time out in the shared belief. There's no doubt in my mind he's been facing the best competition. The question is, will the return to turf help him hurt him or will he be just just as good? Yeah, I mean, this is a great race to wrap up the weekend. There is a lot going on here. There's a lot interesting to kind of think about handicap bet and really just sit back and enjoy. Rock your world like you mentioned, there's two turf races to begin his career. And then was kind of the shocking winner of the Santa Anita Derby, beating Medina, spirit, and then all of a sudden goes off at less than 5 to one in The Kentucky Derby and is nowhere to be seen and you mentioned came back and ran in the Belmont, nowhere close. Gaddi lay off and ran a pretty darn good second to Medina Spirit in a race that may not have had a ton in it, but hey, second to Medina Spirit isn't so bad in the shared belief. I've been against rocky award from the start. I'm not gonna get on board now. Great, the blinkers go on, create they're trying to turf again. I'm not taking a low price there. I think Hudson ridge for Bob Baffert is gonna get bet a ton too. I don't know. The horse just doesn't win enough for my liking two out of 8, always the favorite. I am looking for a price in here. There are 5 horses that come out of the del mar Derby. I think that was an okay, not great race. I'm completely on board if you want to back one of them. I'm trying subconscious. Number two for dick Mandela since the gelding subconscious is two for two. I understand facing way way inferior competition to this. I'm looking for an angle. I'm looking for a price. I think subconscious is running as well, maybe better than anyone in this field and maybe he steps up and continues this trend of really good races. I love the bullet workout on October 24th. I think subconscious is going to fire. I agree. I like subconscious as well. I think it's between him and rock your world, but I'm going to stick with subconscious because he's the hot horse right now and I think he'll be even better as the distances increase being by tap it out of a candy ride mirror subconscious were both Dave and myself in the great two Twilight Derby the nightcap race number ten on the Santa Anita card, this coming Sunday the final race of these Santa Anita meat. All 15 races in the books. It's time now for.

"We have you covered with every graded stakes race all labor day weekend long. It is a wide open race. You can go so many different ways and we did three different. Selections this del mar derby at a mile and an eighth for three-year-olds on the turf drew a very big field and overflow field. It's a wide open. Kind of feels like a lot of different horses can win and it just sort of feels like that. Being the case that trips are going to be very important. Maybe if that is the case that i'm just taking the wrong horse here in the number fourteen flashiest who's drawn on the far outside. He's going to need to work something out. I just think the source is good. I feel like he's going to land in another racier that should set up very well for his late running so i think there was enough pace in here to set up as running. If you can work out clean trip these going to be the right kind of price to come right back with to take another shower. He won the oceanside here to starts bag with a big late. Run flying down the outside of the track. They did send them over to new york after that to try the grade. One saratoga derby. That didn't work out. He didn't get a great trip. It didn't work out He's back home now in in southern california they distances. No problem for him. I think he's going to get a set up and he's going to be a price. I'm going to go back to flashiest in a wide open. Del mar derby. That feels like a lot of different courses can win this del mar derby has drawn a fascinating fourteen horse field. So maybe i'm making a little bit of a mistake and defaulting to a horse. You could be the favorite in this race. But i think there are a lot of signs pointing to the number. One hudson ridge from the bob baffert stable. This horse has really taken some steps forward. Since he finally broke his maiden four starts back at santa anita..

"Found. But I'm busted. I got a cow that had on here. Rachel Holmes saying, you know, busted. I was gonna try to get you somebody with our guest handicapper, Alright, Judo and Carlos. Yes, Andy Caffeine and our guest today will be the Professor Gordon Jones. Good morning. Glory, Sam. Good morning, a lot of races around the country on the Fourth of July celebrating independence and much, much more. It's a big weekend. It's been going in fighting Saturday Sunday, even tomorrow Monday, but a lot of good races. Of course, on the Fourth of July, Sam All right, Well, let's start out at, uh, Los Alamitos as they wrap up their me tomorrow and see what you like. Down south before we take a look at pleasant to Well, you know, there are three really stand out races today at Los Alamitos, the third The fourth and the eighth. Now I can sort of touch lightly a couple others. I think we've got a good pick three going on races 34 and five. And then, if time allows maybe an end of the day tri factor over there at the Northern California Fair, the pleasant and fair in the beautiful town of Pleasant and a lovely county fair track in Northern California and maybe a daily double working there at the end of the day at Pleasant, and Sam, if that sounds okay. All right. I was going to sell, and, uh, tell us your thoughts. Well, let's start with a very loose daily double. Their very first race at last out, only has five horses. So does the fourth. But they are fulfills everywhere else. But in the very first, the number two and the four have an edge, but they are Well, very short prices. And then there's a good working horse with a 30% trainer, Charlie True, his trees a very good man in the second, So just a little tiny daily double to start the day. Maybe the 24 in the opener at one o'clock and the number one. The 24 is the number one for a double, and then immediately the 3rd and 4th are tremendous racist. In the third race and the fourth Why do you find them? Uh, tremendous races. Well there. I think these horses could stop at Starbucks. Maybe do a little, uh, Coca Cola along the way and still win. And I like the second choice in both races. Now, Bob effort just dominates, and he's got these two in the third. He's got these two in the fourth, but I like his second choice horse in both races. So let's go to the third. It's six furlongs for maidens, Phillies in mirrors and just take a look at the Ginger Ginger with a balanced the deal. One of the better writers has had a second and a second and a second at Santa Anita. That was some time ago. Now in a comeback race, Ginger runs second again, but there's nine length almost wins. It is nine lengths clear of the third horse in the restive horses in the field, and I take that translates and projects into about a five length winner in race number three. 5 to 2 Second Choice. Jinja Organic, the number six when and place now we're worried about the other Baffert horse. And that's velvet slippers who was working well is 59 1. As a matter of fact, he's the favorite, and then the number one rounds it out. There's just nobody else in the race so I would go a trifecta. Let's keep the ginger For ganja or whatever the six with 14 with all then the 11th commandment at my seminars is thou shalt reverse, just in case our key horse are in second. That's what the one forearm top dropped The six to place just in case rounded out with an all and that would be the vets on Race number three. Yeah. All right, then. You also like the six ways Well, actually the fourth race and again it's Bob effort, but I don't think we're going. We could get a lot of money. We were probably double or triple the money if things go, according to plan, But Bradford, it's a very funny thing. He scared everybody out. Only five horses are chasing $150,000. At a mile and an eight and the reason they moved it up to the fourth race because they're only five horses. Now the favorite is defunded. Not the police, but the horse they funded the number three with a bell said deal He was second last time 11 lengths clear everybody and he had some very good back form. Very consistent form. Wake The speed of the race might be the number one class air with Mike Smith at five to to, you know, we've got 3 to 5 and 5 to 2. I get a little edge to the five to to this horse. Went too fast too soon last time and got a very good fraction along the way. I call it the hidden route fraction. In other words, the buyer Committee makes a figure that many people follow. So does therapy graph. It's basically based on final time. But this was just three years old doesn't read the racing form very carefully. My expand. The jockey certainly does and went too fast too soon, And on that basis I put the number one Last year on top, the number three if funded second, and the rest will probably be still on the fire. Turn as these to reach the finish line, So I'm going to suggest to pick three just sort of right in the day. Here it is. Go to the third race Single. The six with 13 with 1 to 8. That would cost $6 for $2. And if he did it to daughter denomination, I would do more and then in case the six doesn't win the third back it up with 14 to 13, which 1 to 8, and that's not exactly you won't need a police escort. But I'd be very shocked if we don't cash a lot of tickets in the very first few races, Sam You know, speaking about the buyers, these figures if you don't race Sturbridge at ourselves throughout the year, And how do you come up with a virus speed rating on the few days that they are racing Thera press? Well, you basically have a buyer figure on all of the other races, and so when the horse goes, have there, you just apply Those figures see how they compare with how they're running at last hour and let's put this down right now. Los Alamitos is a very strangely engineered track. They it's a one mile racetrack. And that's traditional. What's not tradition on his 1400 ft for the stretch. This this stretch is at least a football field longer than the stretches say Hollywood Park in the Good Old days or Delmar down by visitor from the surf. Or Santa Anita. This is the longest stretch in America, but it also is one of the fastest tracks in America. So the horses are running easily, and they just continue down the stretch. Even though it's longer they might get tired. They usually do not. And so that's the story of Los Alamitos, one of the fastest and Faris tracks in America. La Salle Arenas. Okay, that takes us to the first four. Who do you like on the second half of it Schedule? Well, I came up with a lot of photo finishes in the fifth race. It's 1 to 8. In the sixth race. It's 136. But coming to the rescue is a horse called complete control in the eighth, the next the last rays This.

Andy Caffeine Mike Smith $6 Rachel Holmes $150,000 America Carlos $2 one mile 1400 ft 13 Judo tomorrow Hollywood Park Charlie True fifth race 8 La Salle Arenas five horses Pleasant

"Could assist them on. I mean nature and historian catherine muni agreed. More than money is at stake in horse. Racing and horses aren't just horses but an animal is understood to represent us competing and in that sense. I think it's a really powerful way of sort of suggesting. Hey i didn't get to be incredibly. Incredibly incredibly rich and live on. Fifth avenue has some how the world is unfair. I want to be in this position. Because i actually deserve it. Because i'm a winner right and if only you were a winner you could be in my position to right. I mean it's it's one of the great sort of displays of ostensible meritocracy in this weird by proxy way and that means that the horses themselves come to represent all sorts of things about you know their masculinity in their identity and their power and whatever and that means the horses in a weird way end up not it's tools but as alter egos but as a winning. I don't know what was it like again. I'm don. I knew by racing trillium. Also all up at the same time you know as a parent is young and and and and and mike daughter. Everyone's just so proud of it. It's legs you'd like to leave. You got something. That's that's that's something that you can player so maybe actually winning races is for the ego and recouping losses from those races is just part of the business which most owners do by breeding. Top studs can make up to two hundred and fifty thousand breeding session in other words to have sexual intercourse with mayor. This can be three times a day and they can be flown all over the world to mate but to get that kind of clout. It's necessary for the horses to be seen succeed in major stake races and that's likely what medina spirit will be doing in the near future on top of the intense screening until being. There are other concerns about horse racing that have surfaced over the past few years. There have been a spate of catastrophic accidents and maybe most puzzling and striking was during the two thousand nineteen winter spring meeting where thirty horses died at santa anita a prominent racing. Another horse has died at the santa anita racetrack in southern california dying at race. Tracks is not uncommon for. Your old colt has died while training at santa anita racetrack today. Thirtieth death yesterday here at the park. The forecast this summer. Santa anita's had three fidelity's including a horse named pushing sixty the chestnut filly was exiting far. Turn when it fractured her. Left front ankle. Injury was considered too severe for recovery and pushing sixty was youth and is that was the eleventh racing or training death at santa anita since the meeting started in december twenty twenty so i wonder to myself could this sport even survive these tragic accidents and these scandals i mean i hear more about the scandals and problems in horse racing at this point that about horse. Racing itself will. Congress is actually trying to help at the end of twenty twenty congress passed and the president signed the horse racing integrity and safety act. It's actually a piece of cross party legislation that is supposed to take effect on july first. Twenty twenty two and the act demand standards in conditions thoroughbred racing because of the tragedies also to make uniform the medication rules and regulations because currently the rules on substances are set at the state level which to describe as chaotic would be a gross understatement. Regardless of congress's actions it's the stakeholders that may in fact force reform and by stakeholders. I mean the original source of the term gamblers. A group of gamblers are as joe puts them horse. Players called betting betters has filed a class action lawsuit against baffert horse flers horse players which i count myself among our a cranky air you died bunch and you know it's not just about the money it's about being right and if you're right you get reward. So you know for those of us bet on mandolin the second-place horse and you know several million dollars worth of it. We don't get our money back to medina spirit has been paid and the that money's already been spent likely by various betters on that so you know. A group came together and sued both him baffert the odor and in another case churchill downs. For the money they lost given everything that has occurred. You might think. Our experts would feel conflicted and concerned about the continuation of the sport itself. I have and you'd be right. I very mixed feelings. Here's catherine mooney speaking as a historian. I would say that our understanding of animals as you know to be cherished and to be cosseted that way and not to be working. Animals is such a relatively new idea that to historic is it is probably helpful right right and also i would say as somebody who has spent a lot of time very happily with performance horses who are very well in europe I know plenty of horses. Who love to compete. You know who were just like i show you something y- Yeah you're gonna. You're gonna really like this and i don't want them to lose that but that doesn't mean that i don't sympathize with what i think is the very sincere desire to protect those animals and that last be at the core of everything we do that are near. Dr megan koerfer and i is. That scandal is not the defining feature of the sport. I honestly think.

Rhinestone was only eaten the neck that day but he would be heading to the kentucky derby with a lot of questions surrounding for one thing. Rhinestone had only made five career starts. No horse had won the kentucky. Derby on five starts or less since brokers tip in nineteen thirty-three for another. He wasn't even necessarily the best in these trainers d wayne. Lukas would be sending record. Five horses to the derby and lucas himself was reluctant to rank one above another. Dave johnson of abc sports with the goal of cracked late cabinet on the side of town. And here's optima to guide wasn't cabin on the inside was it baby. Mcquaid noted in the top urban grindstone and hit the wire together and it took five minutes for the placing judges to confirm the result of that photo. Finish but the winner of the one hundred twenty second run for the roses was grindstone. As one sports writer. Put it the kentucky. Derby distance is seventy nine thousand inches and by getting his nose in front of the wire grindstone had led only the final four but it was all that he needed five days later. Lucas announced that grindstone had been retired from racing. Following the discovery of another bone chip in the colts need may grindstone the first horse and seventy years to be retired immediately following win in the kentucky derby but he also has become the first horse in seventy two years to win both the louisiana derby and the kentucky derby he had won the first million dollar kentucky derby in history he had given lucas consecutive win and a triple crown race and he had made. Wt young kentucky derby winning owner and brief. I was never proud to stand next to mr young said lucas. Adding this is absolutely the happiest. I've ever been in my life. As a stallion grindstone would become the sire of belmont winter bird stone and the grand sire of classic winners mine that bird and summer bird following his stallion career in kentucky he would relocate to oregon and twenty ten where he would sire more stakes winners in the pacific northwest but the legacy of brian stone began twenty five years ago. "Budget stakes. Nita will start in re number four bobby the desert code named after the two thousand eight turf, Sprint winner I believe we just kept turf sprint winner down the hill. I believe it was two thousand and eight five and a half wrongs. Maybe, it was oh seven, not sure five and a half furlongs. No more hill We feel the six. And it's unfortunate I wish they were still running down the hill, but now we get five and a half furlongs on them were conventional turf course, and there's plenty of speed as you may expect in this race number, one Phantom boss number five party town both the speed of the speed plane, and simply I think number. Four rookie mistake is better than this field. She's been in the money. All four tries on the senator turf course to. To wins two thirds. She's learned how to sit a little bit off the pace and come with a bit of a run. Six furlongs looked like it was a little too far for her last time out five and a half furlongs. I think it's a right between the eyes or hit. It's m right between the eyes and I think rookie mistake at five to two is a horse that I would single if I'm playing horizontal wagers. Bobby Newman, perhaps saying. She because the number two, she's so special on the boys. She beat them last time in an entry level allowance optional claimer where it appears. She was in for the tag. She'd runs through conditions. She was in for the tag. Nobody claimed her now. She's two to one morning line favorite. Boys in the desert coat. She is a perfect two for two at five and a half promos. Don't let the distance marker in the region form full you. They clump in the five furlongs in the five and a half. She's a perfect two for two at five and a half furlongs Peter. "All right here we go. We're back on racing down today. Episode Number Fifty. We got a lot of stuff to get to today. Three fifty three fifty point preparations on the docket for this week. In one hundred Fifty Kentucky Derby points up for grabs three more horses will be on their way to Churchill. Downs weekend. There's also a bunch of other stakes around the country this weekend most notably the grade. Santa Anita Handicap. So we'll get to all those book. I we gotta get to the action from this past weekend in Saudi Arabia and the conversation is coming up at. I've seen it come up in multiple different areas is about the winner of the Saudi. Maximum Security You know that is probably the most the Kentucky Derby incident and you know. I'M NOT GONNA come on here and you know say that the Saudi Cup has anything to do with the decision that was made at Churchill. Downs or anything like that or argue that the disqualification now because he's one twenty million dollars. Saudi Cup shouldn't happen I I am not gonNA come on here. Make that argument I just off you know really looking at it. It's unfortunate that happened because maximum security is really just such a tough horse. And you know there's not enough good things you can say about maximum security and you know that raise really showed that maximum security is one of the best horses in the world and obviously right now. The leader of the pack in the United States for older horse. Right now and be really cool to see this horse competing for your old year and you know depending on where he goes from here. Obviously you know. They already mentioned that. He's not going to Dubai. But just where MAC security goes from. Here I'm excited to see that. And what he has in store you know. I'm sure Eric will have some of his things. Say about maximum security. But that's something not lost museum. Fortunate -ness of the disqualification at the Kentucky Derby. Because you know this is a really really fantastic horse for sure. I mean he's slowly and steadily starting to shed that tag of being the Horse Sector disqualified from the Kentucky Derby even though it will always remember that way. If you were to continue what you did last weekend easily going to be more remembered as one of the better horses heading into this decade in this early part of the century the obviously he's now ten million dollars in earnings in at this stage career. It's only getting go go higher. It'll be interesting to see where he gets brought back. I met in. Saratoga is kind of the midseason point. Four the connections there But honestly I think he's already cemented. His legacy added great horse. Just you know like cigar did way back when of when he won the inaugural Dubai World Cup. Maximum security is going to be able to say the same thing for the Saudi Cup where he'd be a really good group of Horses. I might add Definitely was not lighten any sense I think every horse for the most part Ranta form in the Saudi Cub ibew. Probably the biggest surprise people contend but definitely not be By a quarter of a lengthy Iran. Huge She's also in so many other horses from the race but maximum security Kind of a rough trip was definitely a target especially for teas on Mutual Gustavo. Louisa has had to get created down the stretch. But you work down in that. Horses has tons and tons of heart. I don't really know I've seen a horse. Who Does Not WanNa let him worse by like maximum security does. It's quite impressive. How this works bears down to every time he races and I just think I I I think we all know. He's in pre twenty twenty if he stays healthy yeah. That was another thing that I didn't quite get that opening. Bid Is the fact that you know. Maximum security did all that won the race while Iran Ortiz was basically writing interference. I made the comment to Eric Baxter. Excuse jokers still out there kind of looked like a NASCAR and now you can say all you want about. How you know. Probably wasn't the best rider. You didn't have good character of Iraqis. I thought it was a good strategy on his part to do what he could to be. Maximum security obviously probably definitely in this country If he would probably would have been disqualified but I thought it was good on his part to do his best to win. Win The race. And try to keep maximum-security away because I don't think I if you run that race normally maximum-security just goes by with the rules over there. They run category One rules which unlike in America the disqualification rules are if you preventing a worse from running their best race. You get disqualified. There is. That's worse when when you run interference or not so if mutual Gustavo Iraqis does dat but the horse wins by Lincoln half. It's not a problem. Give what was within the rules so it was a good ride? Bhai Iran It was definitely a little malicious. I certainly Jason Service not lease with IRA. Teaser was on the first things. He made a comment about after the race. In the in an interview shortly after On national television I might add But at the same time that's I mean the races aren't one you know like a track meet where you can necessarily go between the lane. This horse racing and that kind of stuff can fly to an extent maybe a little over the edge. I think especially when acting security job inside. I really started to hurt an inside but I was happy that I read never intentionally drew contact although he was doing some blocking like you said NASCAR ask He never intended to make contact which I think was probably the safest thing and when he when he knew the horses about to go by he kind of backed off on trying to get through so are running more interference so while maybe was maybe a little militias It definitely was good race riding on his part all right so that. That's it for this stuff with the Saudi Cup Stripping back over Cross sees out before we get to the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks preparations that you want to highlight a Horse Zulu al folk who is turning into his own. You know I will highlight at about this point last year. This is were bricks and more bricks and mortar was not not saying that Zulu Alpha is going to be the next bricks mortar. Or anything like that. But you know he could do similar things to where it's very likely he's going to do similar things to what bricks and mortar didn't very likely that this is probably the top tier force in the United States. This year. You know at this point last year. Bricks and mortar was a great one Winnipeg World Cup turf and and then he had a great to race. I believe it was either at fairgrounds are one of the tracks Louisiana so to this point Zulu Alpha grade one winner Pegasus World Cup turf now. He's agreed to winner The Mac Ramadan down at Gulfstream. This past weekend. I think Zulu Alpha's in for a really strong really really strong two thousand twenty Keep your eye on him. Come for race like the turf classic the Kentucky Derby Undercard. That's where I would him go but not saying Zulu Alpha is an expert in order. But I'm not saying that he isn't either into Rena. Bricks and mortar was able to have consistent success last year is because all the worst is behind him weren't consistent. I mentioned on the show last week. That Group of forces that Zulu Alpa was facing. He actually used to be a part of that group they never were able to consistently put together strong back. That rates it's bricks. Mortar took it to a new level. Easily able to string together back Multiple consecutive good races in a row. And that's what God in his horse of the year title. And if these keep going the weather going is do. The wealth is going to be able to do the same thing last year Even though I was Kinda surprised after neier introduced the Turks Trinity Series that no horse really emerged from that as premier career force and to be chair. I mean we see that with Dirt horses as well on the on the Derby trail. They don't always shape out after the triple crown trail to be good and that kind of creates inconsistencies in the handicapped division like we saw maybe back Towards the end of maybe before the end of two thousand seventeen that you're got stronger as it went on but nevertheless China look into Alpa. Maybe like an expert in order. I wouldn't be surprised because once again the turf division isn't strong and If I'm going to throw one out there vitality is probably the best grass three year old male out there And I know. The connections are keen. Distract him out so he could be wanted content we know. He has loads talent. So at this point Zulu Alpha is primed at least stay home maleter force because so far. There are no challengers within a mile oven.

Who's the Champ?

"Bobby? A halt of the New York hot list is our first guest of two thousand twenty here on the gate now. The horse that won the Breeders Cup dirt bile beating Omaha beach is spun to run and he will be facing Omaha beach again in the Pegasus World Cup. The first major race of two thousand thousand twenty but maximum security will not be there and code of honor will not be there. Maximum security is waiting for Saudi Arabia. The world's richest race the Saudi Cup in February. It's very tempting to make this a political discussion. I'll only do it to the extent of saying with what's going on in the Middle East right now. How do you think that is going to impact whether trainers bring their horses over for the Saudi Cup and or the Dubai World Cup in March or maybe they take a look at that Pegasus again and say maybe we ought to just stay here that that's a very hard question to answer? Ah It's hard to understand how people feel I will say this. I am confident in saying that the people especially in Dubai. We're ruler of the country behind that I think they're going to bend over backwards to provide security and take care of the park I I would hope the same thing's going to happen in Saudi Arabia race and then just not become a outer tech or anyone but that is a question question that you just can't answer. I think it's very hard. It's an individual decision to a Lotta funny. I understand when people go play a lot of people who have no dog in the adviser to come up with answers of morally questions. And what they're gonNA do when not to you. Gary West was all set to run his voice Independence when it was nine nine billion dollar I. He was happy to take the fourbillion winter. Share the person. Just go to the Middle East but when you cut the first out of nowhere to three billion winter I'll get one point five billion something like that and you have just wants to you know once in a lifetime could easily win ten million dollars and probably turn around that month and win a twelve million dollar right I. It's hard because this is an expensive sport and as much as these people arrested of of money that goes into this so You understand it as of now. I haven't heard anyone saying they're going to change their mind about going. I'm sure people are a little bit nervous but I mean let's be frank. I think anytime you over. There is probably reason to be nervous. So it's just an individual decision and I wouldn't chastize anyone. Whatever they they decide because it feels like them? That's their call. It's not it. I make my own decision on my life. You make your own decision on your own life and I think that's the way it goes. Oh by the way. I think you're under selling the Saudi Cup. I believe the purses twenty million dollars. Well it's ten million the whip you get ten billion but it's it's one that that that's what I'm saying he gary West is looking at it. I will get sent. Don't get out of the home and billion dollars if I say in that term so you can when you look at it now. You basically have to win the Pakistan that in line with at one point I for share of the first compares to the ten million that he will win. Take home for winning the Saudi Cup where he will be the favorite and a one term mounting great definitely. I Dunno betting Saudi Arabia. But I know American pools. He's GonNa behavior and you running for stabbing tons of money. That's a pretty compelling nonetheless in the Pegasus World Cup you do have. Some horses is with some credentials including higher power. The Pacific Classic winner. We mentioned Omaha Beach. roadster for Bob Baffert is aiming toward the Pegasus. And you will be there. How do you see this first? Major race of the year shaping up that force right now in training maximum very doubt after that case to be made then Omaha Aubenas bunch of wrong especially violent eight might be the second and third bout with McKinsey right there with them so when you get fun to run and Omaha Beach I think he got a pretty darn good race. I mean it's interesting possibilities. Are the horses doing nominated at the box He's done. I'm very well. This is of course. A lot of people east might have remembered with Chad Brown Barrasso. And you know he was good you know. He got coming up. In the minor spot that West to John Adler Verona's ray thing all of a sudden. He's winning all these steaks and eat it. You can't east to Churchill even lost or any blocks. We'll see if he's going to be the ones that they decided to send into the race. It'd be a good one back wizar- people know this story. That fifteen thousand dollars who ran against maximum security and the world's most famous Amos. Sixteen Thousand Dollars Eight lamer and it'll be in there. I think it'll be a big competitive fourth. It doesn't I think have the superstar. One runner arrogate powerpoint chrome Omaha beaches in that category But it's interesting. It's good to get back into talking about racing and Bobby Hall. Nobody better to do it with so. Thank you so much barry. Thank you always chat that with you so when we come back here on the gate. The site of the world's first million dollar horse race is short on dollars and short on time time to secure them. Welcome back to win the gate in July of two two thousand. Nearly twenty years ago Churchill. Downs home of the Kentucky Derby purchased Arlington Park in Chicago for nearly seventy one million dollars. Arlington's owner Dick Duchossois had closed the track in one thousand nine hundred ninety eight and nine hundred ninety nine saying that he could not compete with other gambling businesses. The opened again in May may of two thousand presumably with the knowledge that a sale was coming at the time. Churchill was in something of an arms race against the stronach group. When it came to buying up tracts the idea was to create networks of tracks for simulcasting and cross promotion of races and Events in nineteen ninety nine Churchill bought calder race course in Miami and Hollywood Park in California and then bought fairgrounds in New Orleans in two thousand and four? This was meant to counter the STRANA group which began its buying spree in nineteen ninety eight with Santa Anita then they added Gulfstream Park in Florida. Both major Maryland tracks Laurel and PIMLICO as well as golden gate fields and Portland Meadows and Oregon stronach versus Churchill. Wasn't exactly the Cold War. But the battle lines had been drawn it it seemed that Churchill was the first to blink Churchill dumped Hollywood park like a hot potato in two thousand five just six years after buying it. Churchill said at the time that California has forsaken racing and its needs reports came from fairgrounds in two thousand thirteen that the turf course was too dangerous juris to race and that the track had been poorly maintained ever since the churchill purchase at the same time Churchill was trying any maneuvering possible to get out of its obligation obligation to operate racing at calder. Eventually the STRANA coned Gulfstream Park worked out a lease agreement to run the calder meet in October and November this year. Two Thousand Twenty is the final year of Churchill's obligation to lease the meat after which it may convert the track into a shipping logistics center. Or something like that.

Three Wins in 4 Years Is a Record

"James Good Morning. Good Morning Steve. Thanks for having me on hope your weekend. Well it did. It did and I thought I saved I wrote I write down as many selections. It's always tough for Breeders Cup because then the paper gets all gets a little a little sloppy and sure enough here. I'm looking now and yeah I do have it. Actually there we go there we go home. You were a Vino guy and and bricks and mortar and and then spun to run so yeah your share of winners Too Key around I thought was on higher power. Though I didn't have you know I got you written down for Dino. I took higher power stirred Flavian Pratt. What's up on them? I'll tell you play the Heidi wrote one favorite Donna Duluth below she. The brewers Juke juvenile given up Phillies runner-up but he had a win. had four seconds and fourth earners. I thought that was a really a great performance by him and You know he has the Kentucky Derby win on his resume junkies like have that really just A good showcase for an upcoming star in our rank agreed and and I tweeted on Sunday. I've discussed this a couple of times this week. His record is stunning. And he's got people would say. Oh He's only got three wins. WHOA WHOA three wins? Thirty eight mounts and this is only his fourth year as fourth year riding his sixteen seventeen eighteen nineteen at-bats. Ah But another fourteen in the money finishes and then a handful of fourths and fifths I mean the percentage is frightening. I mean considering considering the level of competition really outstanding and he gives he gives every virtually every horse. If he's got horse to work with he gives them a chance. It's definitely and you know I mean I think Santa Anita and hosted the Breeders Cup eight times previously and and and he was writing a lot of california-based debased horses and one of my takeaways was definitely that this this year's Breeders Cup with completely unlike any out in California before I mean just uh-huh it just. It really started on Friday where the first four winners had all raised it Aqueduct Belmont and by the end of it I'm you know I'm looking at it it it. If you'd looked at the charts that Saturday at at Saratoga you wouldn't be surprised to see our ad or ts in four races Castellano and Rosario win into each and then Jose or ts Manny Frank Ricardo Santana All winner races well and Joe Bravo and that's what happened. They took twelve to fourteen races and and all twelve of those horses that race in New York this year now very strong on that on that front and ah not to say that Just had the conversation with Nick. Lock about the euro's and there were there were solid efforts and solid board hits in addition to Iridescence win but The you know the and there were solid performances from west coast sources to bell. Athena's Bella Fina. At under under certain circumstances dances might have won. The united almost looked like a winner hundred yards from the wire There were there were plenty of of solid performances from every region In some cases. Look at Vino. Vino having been into California. I think counselor a lot. You fold in folding would ask. Did you know getting there early with Matali Actually Navarro to I mean in Navarro got there early with a chance. A Lot A lot of times the a Lotta Times. The juvenile turf sprang can be like locally based sources can do all your top two in that race were both based in California with Peter Miller and you the one hundred and thirty five bucks. That's right that's right. That's right his second his second in the race in three years. I'm just looking at the list to spun to run from Philadelphia. So you get you get a a regional kind of a B.. Track player are sharing sharing holiday for new. New York's thunder run actually ran in a mate. Nice at act backer. And the winner but I mean the parks and mom Sharing base at Far Hills at far hell and Maryland bred. That's a couple of times Toga. Yeah yeah everybody everybody got their Lixin. Actually when you when you kind of go through this And I'll just say I I came away. I mean granted. I thought the four big stars coming into enforces with the serious horsey. Our aspirations Bricks Mourner Corner Sister Charlie and Matola two of the four one I think it really does come down horse a year two bricks and mortar and Matola Louis. But I'm giving the edge bricks mortar. I thought it was fantastic campaign. He had been a mile or previously. Before you know getting hurt and undergoing that surgery and I like the fact that Brad Cox I mean Brown ran him. You know he never ran he. Random and six different courses six different states. You went from Florida to Louisiana to Kentucky Hockey to New York to Illinois and the California To win a mile and a half for the first time in his career so to me. He's a deserving of the year well and and driving home the point about the mile and a half for people that because they always beat all the same types and didn't stretch himself then no he did and and you know the there was even people that were incredulous about him going the mile and a half so you know that that score extra points Without a doubt yeah definitely and you know to me One of the Mike Smith that made the point After a couple Oh. He ran second on a pair of privet favorites midnight zoo in Omaha Beach. And he's made the point that he'd right like those races back because it was hard to 'cause over that track track but to me it was more so that those horses were caned on the rail going into the first turn. Blue Prize was tenth early. You know tolley Holy Arosa could be five or six minutes off the pace. But they're jocks really at. That did a great job keeping them in the clear and I really thought midnight. These to you You know continue just to be in traffic through into the far turn. And when she got out she finished great as a case I mean they the great job on on TV and other highlighting it where I think of a blueprint. It's got the jump on her because of the trip the greed and it and it it also. It should be noted for people that are you know insisting that the track nobody could close well. WHOA that's not true? which is simply me? Just look at the chart for the distaff. What do you mean nobody could close at that? Just you know Omaha. Beach closed closed In in as well came from often and others whitmore made up. I mean it wasn't going to get to the winners and the the exact pair But he closed Idiom really had down below chicken that juvenile fillies and that's when the track was absolutely at its worst deepest pissed most impossible right based on based on the figure and in fact. It's funny because yesterday. Paul Matisse was talking about how difficult Friday was to make figures and then it was echoed by Jerry Brown on His On his experts board board. Somebody brought up. Paul's conversation and Jerry also echoed that the way the track changed from the you know the middle part of the day to by the time even the the juvenile boys ran so typically you would if the juvenile of the males run more than two seconds faster than the phillies. You'll get say their way better than the nose Philly but I do think it was. It was a track getting off faster later. And I. I'm I'm not down on British idiom or Donna Boise at all even though that right they came home. I think they should be still terrific runners. And you know it's it's hard to gauge coming out of the juvenile being real adobe guy Exactly what that means going forward so into court definitely Nice Horse Court Vision You know hasn't isn't had much success at Stud but he's bread You know fire. Classic types with that pedigree of his female family has a lot of stamina influences. It just doesn't have much class. You won't find any stakes winners really in that immediate female family well your final the final takeaways. My final take away so I just you know I you know I was. I thought you know it was a tragic end McGowan crew. I mean it was just a Really hurt to see that happy at the very end After a thirteen of the Breeders Cup races have that happened in the ashtray and and racing. Definitely I think has some issues and concerns going forward. the people in the industry maybe do a better job messaging but I still remain. Optimistic is the horserace fan about the future and I was. I came away like in the Breeders Cup. I thought there was some great performances and Looking for work once again the next year very good well. We're looking forward to the action this weekend give us some thoughts about Churchill had terrific card even today yesterday and Wednesday were good and of course the Commonwealth on Saturday the feature the Grade Three Mile and a sixteenth. The three year olds on the grass. It is an absolute war. Some thoughts about what's been going on while everybody was paying attention to Breeders Cup and and we got to look forward to this weekend. Yeah they had three stakes last week and In the MEA mischief flatmate go for the sale and and look good. She loves Churchill Downs Multiple Grade. One winner there in the Divine Queen got off to bad start. Art Never Fire in the In Saturday stakes chill Lewke and Sally's Kirwin breakers Swin She tried the Indiana Oaks folks earlier. This year didn't run good for Dale Romans. But she had one or last two allowance races by like about fifteen lenz combined and ran a rug. Good Rice debris greet Brian Cox's

Steve Haskin Discuss What Is True Horseracing

"Listen I don't WanNa put a damper on things or anything but you know to me. This was not was not true. Horse racing at least as I know it And I I will say that the grass races were were all good. I have no problem with that but after after that a lot of things that just get ugly for me you know. I don't WanNa see horses and jockeys coming back on on a track labelled fast looking like they just been rolling in the sandbox I realized being zealous in their attempt to make detract safe which is understandable expandable. But in my opinion they did. They did at the expense of the racing I mean who's who says you have to make a track excessively really deep and tiring to make it safe. I mean they're they're faster race tracks. I go back look at the aqueduct over the years and they're all in in highly even even the old old Santa Anita track was always safe. Saratoga I mean these are basically safe racetracks. You know so. So what's going on now. I can understand but sometimes you can overdo something and you know. And as much as as I liked Vino Rosso in the classic and you know one all kinds of bets on them To tell you the truth I can never ever watch that race again for abuse reasons to search too much 'cause actually liked Mongolian groom ally and and actually thought at one point in the race that he looked like he was gonna Finish in the money but you know all the repercussions of that. which most I think most of it is just nonsensical? In fact I just read somewhere that you know the vet came that came out. The trainer came out and said it was perfectly sound. You know and understand these things happen. There's no there's absolutely no blame here at all. Just the fact that it happened. That hurts just like it's hurt from all the other incidents in fatal fatal incidents in the past. And you know I go back I was there for roughing it. I was there for go for one. That was there for prairie by you. I mean there for a lot of witnesses and every time you go through a little bit out of you and you know I I I just sort of get attached the Mongolian. Groom not only from a betting standpoint but I just like the connections and and the and the the horrible irony of it is the fact that you know right after the race. He stated emphatically that. They're not going that they don't want to put up two hundred thousand dollars and and then you figured some offers would come in to to get a piece of it and put up. Put up the the supplementary fee and they said you know now talking to date decided to change their mind put up the money and and and then this happened so I know how absolutely devastated everybody. Everybody was there So but you know that's not even what I'm talking about when I'm talking about About the debris come you know I. I just don't want to see the best distance. Sources in the country stagger home the last half a mile and fifty two seconds. That's not resource time time I you can make the track slower and slower and slower but it was weird because the the formula was the same old data. We're going faster early legitimate. The sprint races were run fast but I mean come home the last year from fifty two. I mean that's ridiculous and you know it wasn't that the horses were bad. It was at the race crack. You know that. They poured truckloads of sand on the day before the Breeders Cup. You know and speaking of the classic Nick and that Racetrack. I certainly don't want to see the V to bed. Closes in the country. Never even pick up their feet and get beat fifteen lengths and seventeen links like they're running through quicksand. And I had agreed with Doug mcgann. He's original plan to skip the Breeders Cup and was totally against it when they change their mind. I knew the odds were stacked against them. Being three year olds shipping West I quoted that statistic that they were over twenty two in the past. I and especially with the track favoring speed at that time and I had no idea that it would get even worse for him when he got there and I don't think I don't think shook did either either. I think he was Kinda surprised how how track was playing how deep it was and how come from behind horses were were just spinning their wheels. We also hallway so you don't WanNa see that you know you just don't want to see any kind of track bias when you've got the championships at stake. I mean it was a lot at stake. Code of honor but you know so. Now he's got to End His Campaign very ingloriously. But that's just the beginning You know you look at Look at the beach I mean I I I don't WanNa see arguably the most exciting and talked about horse in the the entire Breeders Cup. Who's been on just off the pace going six furlongs to a mile in an ace in every one of his starts eight and a half lengths back at the half mile? Call all of the dirt mile and still five lengths back at the poll. You know. He's he's still runs one of the best races of his life despite the track and he can't even get close to you know I'm not taking anything away from spun to run but he can't even get close to that horse. You know who was beaten nine links in the Haskell who I I was at parks when he beat gray magician by heading the smarty Jones he ran well in the Pennsylvania Derby but he's still fit and then suddenly turned into a superstar overnight. Overnight gets a one ten buyer and some small stakes at parks despite never having run a triple digit Byron his life so I mean Karama beach I mean even to get close to that horse and to come from that far out of it and where the heck was cold front you know in twelve career starts. He's I've been on the lead or within a link to the lead in every in every start in the met mile. He's on the leading forty four and one for the half but in this race he's running V v six and a half lengths off the lead. I mean I don't get that. Where was he so you want to run? As soon as he went out there you know and opened up to three lengths. She said nobody's nobody's going to catch the source on this racetrack. And like I said I thought I thought the Omaha Beach Randy terrific race to get second and even staying with the dirt mile. Yeah I don't WanNa see the second and third choices you look improbable and Mr Money. who were both being very highly touted touted By their trainers and many of the experts. And who would training brilliant leaguge swimming out there never picking their feet up then got beat nine of ten ten and three quarter lengths. You know now you get to midnight. Be Sue I don't WanNa see the best filling in the country unable to make up an inch aground. In the last days the mile with a final creates run in under forty seconds. You know what in the world we should be doing running ace at the top of the stretch You you know I mean it was a was it. A bad ride was just bad. Racing Locke was was big track. I mean take your pick but affiliates not supposed to be that far back and and if you watch the race you could see blue price who you know. Give her credit you know. She wants to come from off the pace but he had a made her she had to make a move move back stretch and it had lead ready at the eighth pole you know and then you know finally you look at Friday. I don't WanNA see your race with into the strongest W prospect. Seen in years. Completely fall apart. You have a forty five to one shot at twenty eight to one shot and thirty nine to one shot come from first third and fourth to finish one two three and the three to two shot running second stops to a walk getting beat over twelve lengths. You you know and then you know meanwhile before five shot and erase stumbles at the start and finish dead last so to me. That race was a total bust. In fact to tell you the truth by the way if somebody had told me a week before the Breeders Cup that we were GonNa see the Derby favourite less weekend and it would not be a it would not be any of the three favorites more. Would it be scabbard. Nor anybody else in the juvenile but it would be the winner of the national stakes the next day by far and away the most impressive two year old. Maybe most impressive overseeing the team your weekend and then you go to the other dirt race. On on Friday juvenile fillies you know we have to brilliant phillies coming off. A dominating wins literally staggering home rubber-legged in in an agonizing slow twenty seven three and seven and two for the last sixteenth of a mile. I didn't raise sources. Could run that slow so to to me. You know this is just one. I'M GONNA forget very quickly but this would have forgotten about it by now. If I didn't have to talk about out of here I listen. I'm sure I'm sure a lot of other people feel are being too harsh. But what can I do. It's just the way I feel. You know maybe it's just I've got too many Committee races behind me.

"Time guest to the show this man is responsible for love American racing he was part of the old eighty or one of his favourite beds is the box and not only is he abetting genius he's also one of racing's nice guys it is my absolute privilege to welcome to the show Barry Faulkner on bushing onto one suit box exact barry it's about time you made your debut in the final furlong my friend India and great to have you onboard as well looking forward to your thoughts your expert thoughts for what should be too exciting nights of racing on sky sports racing and you can hear in the background making his little giggling cab can be over the last five years we've been doing this together so we have to have the main man on board Pete Foreign it's Al from sky sports racing welcome back and it's a pleasure to be here that was my first final Furlong podcast ever back in twenty fifteen when I was living over in London then and I think back to that very fondly going from being a regular listener to getting to be on the show on a regular basis it's always a pleasure and I'm happy to be here no you're kind man my friend and it's good to have you aboard as well we couldn't do this without your insight as well and speaking of that let's get a brief snapshot of things are we go in there because Santa Anita is normally gold for the Europeans I think this is the record amount of time that track has has held the Breeders Cup but opean runners have never gone away from Santa Anita empty-handed there have been some tracks where we struggled but entries are down this year the pre entries were down the overall European and particularly UK and Irish representations down the obvious exceptions this is Brian and is this is to do Peter and we discussed this in the final film podcast earlier in the season with some of the difficulties some of the series difficulties that sent any face regarding fatalities because let's not forget it was only a few months ago that the Breeders Cup themselves had a meeting to decide whether or not sent an easy would keep it and at the time the word was it was going to be taken off them have things been sorted out and is there still a little bit of nervousness in the air ahead of the biggest meeting of the entire year to be honest I hadn't thought about the welfare issues as a reason why the euro participation is down I was thinking it was somewhat ran them but it's not it's not a crazy thought but I'd like to think that with all effort that's been made in California on you and with California racing together this surface right and say that if that if that is the underlying reason that that that's a erroneous Yes eroneous logic I'd like to think that we've got a service that we was going to play hopefully in a manner that's fair and most important Paul safe over the two days of the Breeders Cup and for the remainder of this fall meeting at Santa Anita well the fact that you haven't been thinking about it tells me that the been less issues lately they've hopefully then iron things out so that should be good barry what are your thoughts on it we donated with the West Coast the entries this year the same level as a two years ago in Delmarva we've got one more race this year significantly down on the entries interest for the British Company in Kentucky last year I doubt in general I think it's a disadvantage for horse shipping California hosted Slip Shipping East but they do that so relative time there's an east coast and they just as far as the truck goes treated hundreds from work and they've done significant amount and hopefully they will have resolved issues they undoubtedly how dealer in the year the cause of the lack of interest from this year I don't really think civilian position to say okay well hopefully things are all aren't out and we can be really excited about the race meeting I genuinely am the other thing to talk about is pace and draw bias because there's definitely draw bias at Sente- Nita impeach you've got some big about that well it's what we're trying to hit a moving target addressing this issue but I think it's something worth considering part of the safer surface I was talking about has to do with the the rail not being gene the place to be more typically in American racing in twenty twenty and we've seen this at a lot of places and it's not super consistent but I mean like Saratoga for example the inside was really not where you want it to be much of the meat now we don't exactly know what it's going to be like for the Breeders Cup something we have to pay attention to because it is very difficult down on the inside you got some short priced favourite to ordinarily I'd like quite a bit core drawn down there but as with all time you try to play the bias game at my friend Mike Baloney the professional horse player says if you WanNa dance with bias you best do so on your toes and that's very much the case but what we've seen at Santa Anita it's very unusual typically good inside means good things for speed and bad inside means it's easier to come from off the pace but what we've seen at Santa Anita this meet on Sundays is as part of the the surface also there's a lot of kickback and it can be difficult to close so you wanna be up towards the front but you want to be up towards the front and not necessarily down on the inside now whether not this is going to be the go forward to be the case for the Breeders Cup I'm not GonNa make any assumptions about it but I'm going to be looking for it and I'm going to act quickly and upgrade horses on I'm talking about the dirt of course horses on the dirt who are going to get that kind of preferred trick and what about you would you be reacting than in real time as well because I remember Breeders Cup where I think it was the year in Vizor won the Breeders Cup classic he was the exception to the rule but everything drawn on the inside like almost if you were on the dirt install water still to you immediate advantage for whatever reason the way that was playing out so I know that you've been studying for the last week or so barry and particularly since the drawers been announced yesterday and today but will you be reacting in real time to how the draw plays out on the night on Sky I think the key thing looking oh bison shifted very very careful because we know sort of simple Harlem hospital you know you'll get a show class FA across favorites join inside wins by St and some inside draw boss that's not indicate indicators you get along show them means how to take on they didn't hangs around and then finishes a close fourth that tells you that the drill by so you hundred very careful how you look at the data it's being presented you you call you see what you're saying if there is the current vice that let's stay alerts and try and take advantage so that we can get maximum gravy so over the two nights all of it live on Sky I've got a brilliant promo to pray at the halfway stage here but let's get straight into the Breeders Cup juvenile turf sprint I'm almost afraid to say the name for the reaction from Pete Four Hundred L. Kamari dear we've got four wheel drive the good as we are getting a decent price seventy two but the terribly unlucky horse at Royal Ascot four wheel drive is currently a best price of nine to two if you look at the races dot com there's allie making the trip over to represent the Europeans to be fair that's for seven Crisford with old friend Frankie Dettori on board as well so there are the three that had the bedding was the awards what are the representation Ena Brian sending over King Neptune with Ryan Moore who will be writing all of his main hopes for the week Barry and I will talk about the group one I stakes which would be run at Newcastle just before we move on Saturday that's a fascinating races has been reopened but Kamari was your goatee the horse for Roy Alaska he's too from to since he has been he was a long odds on favourite in one of those races short price favourite and the other are you sticking with the my friend she's the real deal Kamar very impressive as you pointed out did everything but win at Royal Ascot on ground that she didn't love and has looked so good in the starts since particularly in the last day showing new dimension coming from last I I had ripped up my ticket practically after they broke from the gate at Keeneland that day figuring out what you can't win from their managed to get the job done anyway and has looked very good in her track were park as well she worked out with down for nowhere the other day and really went to the toying with bound for nowhere in a work and then all he went and did is run a massive time figure in an impressive victory in his race last week I think she sitting on go I think she's square price four wheel drive is another ward runner who is very talented is actually done better on the clock Kamari has I plan on getting Kamari to win yes and I'll play a forecast exact with a four wheel drive over Kamari to back that up in just taste. I'm very curious to hear what you guys think of alley as a potential one to upset the apple cart I just don't know I love him I I don't know how well he's going to be sued by this by this configuration of the very sharp five furlongs around dead but it's Kamari from me
