The Life of Bridget 'Biddy' Mason

"Mason was born on august fifteenth eighteen eighteen somewhere near hancock county georgia because biddy was born into slavery. The circumstances of her childhood are mostly unknown. But we know. She was sold to a family of enslavers mississippi by young adulthood. These new enslavers were robert. And rebecca smith farmers who made bitty look after their children tend to their livestock work the fields and act as a nurse and midwife for the family during this time he gave birth to three daughters of her own ellen and harriet. When robert smith converted to the new mormon faith he decided to pack up his family and moved to salt lake city with a group of other mormons. Of course biddy and the rest of the people. Robert enslaved were forced to come to in eighteen forty seven. The group traveled over fifteen hundred miles in three hundred wagon caravan across multiple states to get to utah bitty set up camp for the smiths cooked all. The food heard the cattle and acted as midwife all while taking care of her own three daughters though utah was still part of mexico at the time the smith family settled into. What would later become salt lake city. But soon robert smith decided he wanted to seek greener pastures again. This time in san bernardino california biddy. The smith family and the rest of their enslaved workers settled down near the santa ana river and set up a prosperous cattle business. There was just one problem for robert smith. Slavery was illegal in california. Robert tried to conceal this fact from the people. He had enslaved but the american civil war was brewing back. East and slavery was the major topic of the day. It was looking more and more likely that bitty would end up free at. The smith stayed in san bernardino so instead of allowing that to happen. Robert plotted to move the whole family to texas and to trick biddy into coming along

Exploding California wildfires prompt evacuation orders for 100,000

"About 100,000 people in Orange County are under evacuation orders this morning as the region braces for another blast of dangerous weather. That could push two wildfires into residential areas. Forecasters are predicting Santa Ana winds with gusts of up to 50 to 80 MPH at times over much of Southern California, with some the strongest expected in Orange County. Two firefighters were critically injured yesterday fighting the Silverado fired their Irvine and Lake Forest each suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns over much their bodies, according to Orange County Fire chief Brian Fennessy. I was at the hospital shortly after both firefighters were brought to the hospital. They're gravely injured. An investigation is underway to determine how the firefighters were overcome by the flames. Southern California Edison reported to the state's Public Utilities Commission last night. It's investigating whether it's equipment might have started the fire. The utility said a wire that last two telecommunications line to a supporting cable may have struck a high voltage conducting line. Silverado Fire has burned over is 12,000 Acres and is now 5% contained. Irvine Mayor Christina Shay says residents need to be ready to go as soon as they get the word. We're urging everyone to comply with the evacuation orders, please for their safety and safety of our first responders. The winds were so strong that firefighters had to ground their aircraft for much the day they got back up by late yesterday afternoon and work through much the night a second blaze. The Blue Ridge Fire started in Santa Ana Canyon yesterday and has now grown to 8000 acres. That fire near your blend is also is completely uncontained and has forced about 20,000 people to evacuate.

"Santa ANAs that are set to kick up and less in an hour. Joining us talk more about this. Chris and Carl has been watching this fire. Chris, what's going on today? Well, yes, Antennas are the headline is to whether or not they manifest and what direction they do decide to below, as if winds have some sort of intelligence to determine their direction, but no less If they do blow east out of the East Northeast. And what does that mean? Means that they're blown up from the desert and also straight on down the San Gabriel Valley. And if you followed the direction of this fire this bobcat fire, its orientation is Largely been north to South. So imagine a line from from Angeles Crest Highway. The two people are familiar with the driving through them at the mountain Ridge is up there. There's ah fire Lookout station up there amount better and that is Oh, I would say, probably about a couple miles north of the northern flank of this fire. Reason I'm using this is an orientation is because if you draw a straight line south And you're going to end up essentially in Monrovia and the foothill communities. And so what The worry is is that as these winds started blow from the East Northeast, that they're going to take that north south orientation and then they're going to kind of push it into a southwesterly flow and boom that close right on down towards those communities. But it's more complicated than that. Right. You've got this this line of mountains in the front country, and you know it. You're driving down the 2 10 Freeway. Everybody's familiar. You look out the left hand side of your your car's driving out toward the inland. Pirates Pretty. It's nice. It looks like a wall. But there are all of these canyons in between. Then these jagged edges as they form these canyons also create little micro pockets of wind that channels through and so if you have ST Anna's coming through, if you live in the foothills, you know this. The winds compress and gust through those canyons. And that is where the problem lies. Because if this fire does push in a southwesterly direction is going to work its way towards Santa Anita Little Santa Anita Monrovia canyons, all of which have been highly protected. Haven't burned in a long time. Not since 1957. You've got thick stands of trees and brush out there. Everything is incredibly dry. I was back there hiking just last Friday, and I mean everything. You touch it, and it basically falls apart because of how dry it is, If you put all that together, and it is a high risk scenario, which is why we have these evacuation warnings, which, by the way, are not orders. It's just Get ready. Have your stuff packed. Have a plan. Get ready to go. Should it become an order? There's a lot of fuel there. I I in the same area pretty regularly and just thinking about All there is to burn like you said. Some of it hasn't burned 50 to 100 years. Are they using air support today? And did they use it on this thing when it first broke out on Saturday? Yes. First work out on was a Saturday or Sunday Sunday. Sorry, I got my days Except with it's Tuesday, Not Monday. Same problem. Yes, it was around 12 21 when this fire started, by the way, the West Fork, a recreational area down by the Constable Dam, which, of course you have the Cogswell Reservoir. Nobody knows where that is, Unless you know where it is. And the reason nobody knows where it is because it's in the middle of nowhere, which is what has created the problem in terms of fighting this fire because the train is so difficult to deal with. So they've dropped hotshots back there and they're you know they're back their song and trying to build containment lines. And so when it comes to the air support the air support was there. Initially on the attack on Sunday, their support was there through Sunday night. L, a county fire. Of course. They've got the therefore fire hawks, which can fly at night, So they're mapped in there dropping water. They're doing what they got to do. And then yesterday we had a RSA port. But here's the trick to it. The inversion layer settled in yesterday. So you would have noticed in the Saint Gabriel Valley. The smoke just kind of laid down and as it lay down, it created some visibility issues. And then on top of that, today, because of this marine layer, it is still cloudy and that is good and bad. It's good because you've got less You are you've got less wind. I mean, the Windsor calm right now. You've got more humidity. It's bad because they can't get in the air support in there. So still old fashioned wildland firefighting. He got guys back there you know, with with just brunt work, chainsaws and other tools in order to just dig up raw mineral earth, So it's not fun whether dealing with about 350 firefighters on this That's the other thing to you. Look at the personnel. This is the problem. This is why all of the National force, essentially Southern California's central California have been closed. Everybody's taxed every spent. I was talking with the chief of the Angeles National Forest yesterday, Robert Garcia and I've seen him probably like 15 times in the last two months. And I can count the number of times I've seen him in the previous 3.5 years Angeles National Force. I mean, it's just been bouncing back and forth all over the place, so they've brought in other assets to help out. Of course, they're in unified command with L, a county fire and other jurisdictions, But it's just been nonstop for these guys. And so that is part of the problem that they're they're handling is that it is a resource issue. As much as it is a topography is issue as much as it is a fire behavior issue. That's great.
