But it reminds me very much of what happens in the SEC when these states compete in one school beach than other, et cetera, et cetera. It's a very healthy and helpful experience. Well, Billy, for all the critics of sports and there are many and with justification last night when you had Houston and Philly playing in football and the baseball, it does bring it home and I'm really glad to hear that because I've always been close to that city through relatives and nearly almost going to work there once. "And welcome back to the show. We've had great show already with Steve spurrier. In the first hour, we'll continue our preview of the big game Saturday between Georgia and Florida Connor, Riley joining us now, always cool to catch up with Connor. Connor, good afternoon, and what is going on in the land of the dogs as we get ready for Jacksonville. Good afternoon. Awesome. Thanks for having me on Paul yet. A lot of the excitement around this game, even maybe a little surprising given what lies ahead for Georgia the week after this. Yeah, I know there have been some oddities, but I can never remember and you're certainly much younger. A Georgia Florida game getting overshadowed in some ways. I know that they would take exception to that in Jacksonville with what is next week. I doubt seriously that's a problem for Kirby smart though. What has it been like as he gets ready to make the trip? No, yeah, Kirby smart. He even made this clear during the bi week, the focus is very much on the university of Florida and winning this game. We talked to players this week as well. They still recall losing to Florida in 2020 and having sort of that chip on your shoulder from that mentality there. So even though Georgia, big game against Tennessee, possibly the biggest game in the history of Sanford stadium in two weeks, they know that what this rivalry means, they know weird things have happened in this game before and I think they're going to be ready to go out there and take care of business on Saturday against Florida. And Connor with an eye to next week, Kirby smart addressed the injury situation to two of the dog's best players. What is the situation right now? Yeah, it doesn't sound like George is going to have either jaylen Carter or 80 Mitchell this Saturday and Carter obviously he's going to be a top ten pick next season, very important piece of that defensive line. But in beating both Florida and possibly Tennessee, I think 80 Mitchell might be more important just in terms of his ability to separate, get downfield to go up and catch a ball over a defensive back. And while Tennessee does have some pass defense issues, 80 Mitchell is the type of guy that this Georgia team just doesn't have elsewhere on its roster. And so if not playing them this week, potentially means that they get another chance to get healthy and get out there on the field against Tennessee. I think at that point this is what that's the way things are looking right now, but George is not going to have most likely it's best ride receiver and then obviously it's most talented defender this weekend with Jalen Carter not expected to play with a knee injury. And with both of them out, what difference do you see? I mean, I get maybe it's hard to tell against Vanderbilt, but against a quality team like Florida against an elite team like Tennessee. What is the difference between Georgia with those players in Georgia without them? Yeah, I mean, we'll start with Jalen Carter, Florida's got a really great rushing offense in having a guy like Jalen Carter, who was just able to blow plays up in the middle. It's gonna make wood theoretically make things more difficult for this Florida off guns to run the ball without that. They have some nice pieces on their defensive line, but they don't have a true game record like that in the middle of the defense. As far as no 80, Mitchell, they've been used to playing without him, you know, he's been out since it's really the second game of the season. And so I would expect in this game, you know, Florida a little bit more of an athletic secondary than what you've seen from auburn Vanderbilt in recent weeks. I think they're really gonna hammer the tight ends, Brock Bowers and Darnell Washington. I would say, look for them in both have big games as they have the ability to just take advantage and out athlete a, what is a promising Florida secondary, but has struggled at times this season. Connor, it seems like a strange season. I know we're at that really important juncture now after it seemed like an interminable run and I'll struggle to remember all the games in this stretch, but auburn and Vanderbilt and Missouri, I don't know how you could have even stayed awake covering the team, let alone the players paying attention, but what do we know about Georgia as we reach the 9th week of the season? Yeah, it's hard to say, I think they pretty clearly played their two best teams in weeks one and week three of this season. And granted both of those games were away from Sanford stadium in Oregon in South Carolina, but we haven't really seen that Georgia team. I mean, maybe we saw it against Vanderbilt, but I think the talent deferential is so great between those two teams. It's really hard to get a takeaway there, whereas Florida, Tennessee, these next few weeks, these are teams that have athletes that are capable of beating you. And so we're going to learn a lot about this Georgia team. I think from a mental standpoint this week, with just how focused they are, if they go in there and they get up to a big lead on Florida early and they take care of business. I think that's going to show you what this team is from a mental makeup standpoint. But if they go out there and they play with their food, like they did against Missouri earlier in the season and they turn this into a four quarter game, I think that lends credence to the thought that maybe some people are more worried about this team and again, I think we look through it this week. There have only been 6 times that there have been a repeat national champion in college football since the 1940s. What Georgia is trying to do is really hard. I mean, you play that many big games in a row as Georgia will over these next couple of weeks. It's very likely that you could possibly get tripped up, especially with that game against Tennessee who Tennessee looks as good as any team in the country does right now. Let's talk about stetson Bennett because there were the wonder or there was wondering and questions about him coming into the season. It seemed like that all dissipated very, very quickly and then it came back again. What's your assessment of him so far? Yeah, I think the stats and Bennett we've seen so far when he starts games off fast and in a rhythm.

"Talk about being a fan and SEC fan. Three best trips I would say, the most chips were Jacksonville, Florida, being in bound house. Sure. Jacksonville game happens back and forth with my best. Three trips the longest trips was the Baton Rouge Vince duly Mark Rick and Kirby smart. Three coaches at Latin root. That's pretty pretty different. So anyway, you're not going to get this at the most vote. I've been there a couple of times. I mean, it's a nice setting, but the stadium, I think, and maybe they've redone it since I've been there last a couple of years ago, but to me, it's just, it's a decrepit place, and. I don't know. I never, I've never been, I think it's a beautiful area, but I'll take Sanford stadium any day. Yep, my sister went to the rose bowl a couple of years ago with Georgia, but come back with anything spectacular. But you don't see this at the rose bowl as a walked up to the stadium when Mark Rick was going in there and that jump still go hit the upright and the first half that's never a good sign. And they lost by a couple points. But as I walked up there and I'm in my 40s and so these girls in their Georgia dresses and the guys headed jerseys hats on them. I said, hey, y'all want to do a cheer here, yeah? Is that why we got like 50 people we walked up to the interests of tigers stadium going in and they all look at that me and I'm going, well, I thought y'all could do it a chair. That is funny. And they all fold on that Georgia book. So you know the rest of it. You lean over by when you jump out of the building, how about dogs everybody goes? But you're not going to see 50 and I got to see 50 bands outside of doing that. Yeah, absolutely not. But anyway, I want you to talk about the three. I've always, I've always felt and I've said this many times. I've always thought Georgia stadium was one of the most idyllic I've ever ever been to. I think I used to like new and a little bit more when you could, before they enclose the camera, which end zone is it, where you could look into the mountains. I think they've heard, I think they've hurt that stadium by putting more seats there. That was one of the coolest things in the world in the fall. When you could peer out over. But one comment. Sure. I was at the game in 73 when you had to open in and we were in the bleachers. We went there was a sell out. We had no tickets. I don't know how we got in. But here's the other thing. We drove back to Gatlinburg to get the Stone Mountain Georgia. Right. That is part of the experience. You go ahead. You talk. No, no, I agree. I stayed in Gatlinburg one time and I'll never do it again. It was just too many people. For a Tennessee Alabama game, but we were just diving back to get the beauty of the mountains going back to Georgia. When you go ahead and talk about it. No, I'm trying to think because. We're talking just pure beauty. We're not talking about I mean, obviously Tiger stadium on a Saturday night is a stand-alone place, but I'm not sure the beauty of it compares to Athens. Our needless stadium. Yeah, we're new. Yeah, I mean, to me, and nothing to do with I mean, I think auburn can be very very cool place. I was gonna bring up. Yeah, I think it's very unique. The atmosphere there, I think, is really, it's definitely in consideration because of the and anytime you say something, people take it the wrong way. Every stadium in the SEC has great pat well. 11, so let's see, 13 of the 14 have great passion. But. Yeah, I'm going to stay with the Georgia Florida game. I'm somewhat new to it. I've been there the last 6 or 7. But I was amazed at that atmosphere too. I mean, it's not the prettiest place I've ever been. Nope. In the 70s, they had a chain link fence at that stadium in Jacksonville. You had to have Georgia tickets, get on Georgia side, you had to take on the Florida side, because all the drinking and fighting. Wow. That's amazing. Light in the center of the goal in the end zones. So it's not that no, there's not that no. But I mean, to me, again, most of the time, we were there. We're in a parking lot, so it's not exactly ideal, but those are really, that's how I feel. Well, thank you so much, Alan. It's great to hear from you. You take care of you. "Moving real fast on this topic and maybe people's head spinning, but the bottom line is in college football, you're going to get what you pay for. Now, yeah, there's a lot to be said for the fact that Georgia is going to have another advertisement. They're going to have 12 or 13 guys picked and the NFL Draft. They got three projected first rounders. They got 18 year old guys. I told y'all this the other day when I told you why I was picking Georgia but all those guys going to the NFL yes, Georgia can develop talent. Yes, Nick Saban has proven track record. But you're still seeing kids go where they can get the best deal where they can get the most money and that's kind of what recruiting is about. The facilities used to be the arms race, Paul. Now it's about that free agent money pool that you can get put together by sponsors, donors, and anybody else's door that you knock on, you know, looking for that free agent fund. Like you mentioned the windfall to Kirby smart. That was expected. Win or lose. As I was leaving the airport, where you are right now, today, I mean, there were kiosks set up with gobs of Georgia sweatshirts. I bought four or 5, just to be part of the fun. And how big of a windfall is this going to be? Just from a licensing standpoint, all the things that are already being sold on media on the Internet, what's it all about? Everybody loves the winner, right? Everybody loves a winner in Georgia was already one of the most profitable athletic departments in the nation, Josh Brooks taking that over. I don't anticipate that changing. I mean, that's good business for Georgia athletics and those surge is as much as their academic administration and red tape lets them. I mean, this is the campus that still doesn't have a statue of Herschel Walker on campus. People get all, you know, well, there's events duly statue, but we're drawing the line there, man. Gotta remind everybody where academics, come on, man. How are you, Georgia, and you don't have anything emblematic of Herschel Walker. I mean, you go to LSU and you see Shaq and you go to Michigan state and you see urban Magic Johnson, you go down to the swamp, you see spurrier. You go to Alabama, you see all these, you know, dead coaches and Nick Saban, immortalized with these in Georgia. You know, you know, I'm looking around. I mean, I got Vince duly being carried off somebody's shoulders, you know, on a street corner. I don't see anything around the stadium. You know, so I think this gives Kirby a little bit more clout. I think this means Kirby, maybe, you know, has a little bit more persuasion and people are going to recognize the value of this at the university of Georgia. And you mentioned the licensing and merchant merchandising, but in so many more ways. And I've always thought that Georgian Athens was a little bit of a well kept secret because most people stay in it in Atlanta from the outside when they come in to Georgia and then split out of the football games. You get in Athens and it's an unbelievable college town. I've said, if Epcot had a college town world, it'd look a lot like Athens. Campus is great. So the advertisement for the university of Georgia is immeasurable. As you say. Incredible day. And Mike, I know it will be announced in some of it's starting to leak out, but what is the plan now? I know there will be a celebration this weekend. That's right. There will be Saturday celebration in Stanford stadium. No, no truth to the rumor. They want to move it to Jacksonville. They're going to celebrate it. In Sanford stadium, they're going to have a parade that's going to go down lumpkin street. It's going to be a fantastic scene for Georgia. At the university of Georgia in Sanford stadium, the tickets are free, but you got to be a season. Ticket holder to get on that list first, or a student, right? You know, there's always a catch. I think they're going to have 90,000 there. And I think it's a day that Georgia fans have waited a long time for so many jokes being the butt of the 1980 jokes and Florida fans. You know, really giving him a hard time. And now Georgia has their championship. And now we see how they evolve because here's what's next Paul and I'm gonna let people enjoy they're gonna love it. But I was at Tennessee when they won a 98. And all of a sudden that bar gets raised. And anything less is a disappointment. Remember the next year, Tennessee played Nebraska. Same ball game, nobody care. Not a title game. They play Michigan a couple years who cares, not a championship. So once you climb to the top of the mountain, and I've had several coaches tell me this, it's harder to stay there than to get there. Mike, are you planning on coming home any time soon or you're just going to plant your flag and indie? You know, I will, actually, I'll return home tomorrow and then be home for a little bit and then I'll be down at the senior bowl because as I said, George is going to have 8 guys down there. Simone believable ability for these athletes to showcase themselves, one on one. Your teammates not there to protect you anymore. Okay? It's just you. And that guy crossed from you. It doesn't matter what's on his helmet. He's there for a reason. The NFL believes. So that senior bowl is dynamic, and I'll be down there to cover that. And then I mentioned I'll be back here in and deep for the NFL Draft. Excuse me for the NFL combine where you could see 14 or 15 guys depending on how effective Kirby smart is negotiating with guys like Louis seeing the defensive MVP. I know they want him to come back. George pickens, how much might it cost to keep George at George at Georgia or does he go pro? So they've got some free agents at Georgia that they need to resign in order to have a chance to compete for the championship. Again, next season. Mike, thank you very much. "One of our favorite moments of every week when you do when we do the segment we know college. Football is within striking distance. Our thursday segment with mike griffiths Griff great to have you with us. Big game in your town this coming weekend. The hogs are coming over has gone so far. I think it's going pretty well. I mean the top ten game in athens between the edges. It's a. it's a treat for the folks at sanford stadium as we know george plays. They're marquee game every year. Jacksonville against florida. So when you get a game like this between the hedges. It's it's an opportunity for huge recruiting weekend. Maybe one of the biggest home recruiting weekends. Since george played notre dame between the edges and twenty nine. So it's a huge opportunity for georgia to score well with recruits and potentially score. Well on the field. Listen mikey you hear from people all the time. I did a show out in arkansas. This morning and the razorback fans rightfully are really fired up. You know whether they're predicting victory based on phantom or reality. I don't know but what what do you think As we dig deep into this game well sam. Pittman is just had remarkable success. And it's so good to see arkansas. Back at the at the adult table in the sec. Plane great footballing. Look at arkansas. They go out and get sam pittman at walmart price and he knocks off a the oil barons and texas am jimbo fisher and his nine million dollars and unbelievable. Stay everything texas everything they can want. They've handed it to jimbo they even given them a raise even though he's had ncw show cause and he goes out there and gets be- by a guy with walmart salary from arkansas that that was the fifth sixth choice and all sam his done is put together. A tremendous staff got kids that believe these super seniors that have come back to make one last run for glory. I mean tom murphy. The arkansas democrat gazette really put this in perspective this week when he said take a look at this sam takes over program they lost nineteen th straight. Sec games and fourteen games later. They're top ten. That is remarkable paul. I can't think of another coach. Probably since terry bowden win eleven and open auburn in one thousand. Nine hundred ninety three after pat dye was five five and six and five five and one the previous seasons. I can't think of another turnaround district in the last thirty years. You're right and by the way You should know better than anyone that show causes are not really going to hurt your career arc in college football based on some of the things. We've already talked about in the past the nc double as a whole another. I mean i think there's there is still an nc double a. Right we're football's we'll talk. Ncw come basketball because right now during football not relevant not a part of it topic for another show. You know paul the only thing that could make this georgia game better with arkansas is. Arkansas wasn't coming off such an emotional high. I just don't think you can have two performances like arkansas would need to beat georgia. You're coming off the sky high win over. Am at at and t. stadium. Meanwhile georgia basically had the day off. I mean vanderbilt did show up but not that they did little more than that. I mean sixty two zero. And kirby pulled the first string quarterback in the first quarter and then throw a pass in the fourth quarter. They couldn't score one hundred points but they did so. You've got a rested hungry georgia team. That's eager to prove they can beat somebody because now clemson apparently doesn't matter because they've lost a couple of football. I still think clemson's a decent team. They still finished with. Oh i don't know maybe seven or eight wins if they were in the sec. So i'm not ready to bury those clemson tigers yet but still george other than that hasn't really played a much of a schedule. In fact if you look at the offense they played think. Uab was the best. They rank seventy eight seventy nine th in the country. There's a lot of talk to you about so let me get a prediction Out of you here And then we'll move on to some other subjects. So what's it going to be saturday. What's the final score. George wins paul. But here's the problem with predicting this game. And i know you don't like these fence riding but these are teams that both have potential quarterback issues. We don't really know about k j jefferson. Sam said on monday that he expected him to play. I ask sam on wednesday and he said. I'm not answering. He pretty much said. I'm not answering that. So they need a healthy k. J jefferson to having punchers chance because the way for arkansas to stay in this game is with deep shots. They lead the nation in yards per catch they have a breakaway receiver and trey lan burke they got five guys that have caught passes of more than forty yards. So this is a big play offense. And if you're going to get georgia you're going to get their cornerbacks. That's where there's acceptable particularly opposite. Darin kendrick they've had problems with keeley ringo in amir speed south carolina him four times for passes of longer than thirty five yards. There were four pass interference. Penalties against clemson. So arkansas has the punchers chance if jefferson is healthy conversely kirby revealed this week. Jt daniels still dealing with the laddish. You now what does that mean. He looked awful good last week against vanderbilt with a sore latte. He was nine of ten with a drop pass. I don't know how long. jt stays in the game. Probably till they build about three touchdown league. So i think it's going to be right around that seventeen to twenty one point margin depending on how friendly kirby smart feels in the fourth quarter unless arkansas can hit those shots early so for the most part you think this is about a three touchdown game fair. I think so the fact. It's at home for georgia defacto. That george is a very rested team and the fact that arkansas is coming off such a sky high victory. all those intangibles favor. George say this. Oh paul sam pittman if anybody knows how to move the ball and blocked this defensive front. It sam pittman when sandwich at georgia. He was building offensive lines that were pushing around the d. line. This guy knows what he's doing and they've got a whole offensive line full of returning starters. So i give arkansas chance but paul. The talented georgia has is overwhelming. You're talking about multiple. nfl players. They'll probably have at least nine ten eleven guys drafted next year. We're allowed these. Arkansas guys are going to be looking for corporate jobs in the walmart. Chain in arkansas. It's a good company by the way full disclosure. My dad was a walmart pharmacist. So i'm all about walmart. Just wanna be clear on that. That's not a put-down didn't intend for it to be my migrants joining us mike. So many other things going on the sec. I've learned with you not to just go laundry list up and down the east and west so my question to you as we wrap up georgia move onto the league in general what. What story got to you the most week. What what what what what. Where's the sec. Buzz and mike griffiths house. You know i remember back when lsu and auburn play what was it four or five years ago was it when it was kind of a loser. Outgained literally two thousand sixteen okay. This has that. If your brian hartson when i look at that auburn schedule man. You gotta play georgia next week. You've gotta play at arkansas the week after that. You've got ole miss and lanky. Never jacqueline hyde coming in after that. Then you got a trip to am. I mean this ark. This auburn schedule is scary. I don't want to say it's must win but boy you can look at the remainder that schedule. There's not a lot of certain wins laughed in in the way. Auburn has been playing. Lately is shaky when you shake up your quarterback position when you fire a coach. I mean there's a lot going on at auburn right now. And they head to death valley for a night game conversely old myth and edward. john. I mean look. Nobody wants to say or john's on the hot seat but he is. Because there's been some off-field issues because there's some questions about the direction of the program..

What you're dealing with in the east is a ninety year history of seven of those teams having a relationship and playing ball every year and i think it's would-be with a great deal of trepidation that you would throw that out. That is an evolution. That's revolution that's uncalled for. In the event that the competitive drive between east and west is out of balance. That needs to be adjusted. But frankly i think with texas and oklahoma and lsu and texas a. and m. There are true match for auburn. alabama georgia and florida. And frankly paul. I think any discussion about a four-way pod if you look at the historical games the georgia has with florida and allburn. And how you gonna put them in a pod that doesn't include those two and frankly. I think there's a much better way to do it. We're gonna look at nine games for sure. You see the regular game with strength on strength and you have a roving game that would change every year that means within six years every team would play everybody else and frankly that may not be as good as doing it and four. But at least you wouldn't tear up ninety years of tradition for an evolution. It's totally uncalled for. Let's face it paul. They east west competition in the south. Eastern conference has built the strongest competition and the strongest absolutely strongest conference in football ever known in america. There is no way the big ten with who. Ohio state plays can compete. I heard that discussion yesterday. If you gutted half of the teams out of atlantic coast conference and the big t and you might compete. Well what the hell are the likelihood of that go on down. I don't see any way that the big ten can compete with the southeastern conference for balls or money. But i do not think it's necessary for us to consider taryn up what has worked well for ninety years out. Ain't that's crazy. We need to think in terms of evolution and not revolution.
