Some of them became disenchanted when they saw Sandy Hook hoaxers who were more interested in photoshopping evidence and getting online followers than tracking down the truth. One of them was Doug McGuire, who worked on that hook through movie about Sandy Hook. 2016. He found a phone number for Letty and left a voicemail. Hey, Lenny Posner, this is Doug Maguire. If you ever need me, if you ever want to get a hold of me and learn about what all these people are up to Um, Here's my number. Did you apologize in that message? Oh, Don't believe I did. Voters weigh in on Marjorie Taylor Greene as House votes to oust her from committees
"On Capitol Hill were congressional Democrats taking the rare step of removing a member from the committee's with a handful of Republican votes. Georgia Congressman Marjorie Taylor Greene was stripped of her to committee assignments. Education and budget. The final vote tonight was to 30 to 1 99, with 11 Republicans siding with the Democratic majority. Earlier today, the Georgia lawmakers speaking on the House floor for about 10 Minutes. In her speech, she said that she quote stopped believing in Q and on some time in 2018 after finding misinformation, lies and things that were not true. She also walked back some previous comments suggesting that school shootings like the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary and the 20 18 Parkland shooting were staged. She also attracted the past claim, suggesting that the 9 11 terror attacks may not have occurred more from the House floor with representative Marjorie Taylor Greene earlier today, So when we elected President Trump and then I started seeing things in the news that didn't make sense to me like Russian collusion. Which are conspiracy theories also and have been proven. So these things bothered me deeply, and I realized just watching CNN or Fox News. I may not find the truth. And so what I did is I started looking up things on the Internet, asking questions like most people do everyday use Google And I stumbled across something. And this is that the end of 2017 called Q and on. Well, these posts were mainly about this Russian collusion, information. Ah, lot of it was some of what I would see on the news that night, and I got very interested in it. So I posted about it on Facebook or read about it. I talked about it. I asked questions about it. And then more information came from it. But you see, here's the problem throughout 2018 because I was upset about things and didn't trust The government really, because the people here weren't doing the things that I thought they should be doing for us. The things that I just told you I cared about and I want, you know, a lot of Americans don't trust our government, and that's sad. The problem with that is so as I was allowed to believe things that weren't true, and I would ask questions questions about them and talk about them. And that is absolutely what I regret because if it weren't for the face Post and comments that I liked in 2018. I wouldn't be standing here today and you couldn't point a finger and accuse me of anything wrong because I've lived a very good life that I'm proud of. My family's proud of my husband's proud of my Children are proud of, and that's what my district elected me for. Those comments from freshman representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia responding here is Democratic Congressman Jim McGovern in Massachusetts. Is also the chair of the House Rules Committee, explaining why Democrats decided to proceed with today's four vote that would strip the representative from her two key committee assignments. The party of Lincoln is becoming the party of violent conspiracy theories, and apparently, the leaders of the Republican Party in the House today are not going to do a damn thing about it. Now. I never thought I would say this Madam speaker, but I agree with Mitch McConnell, the Senate minority leader this week. Called Congress one greens embrace of conspiracy theories, and I quote a cancer for the Republican Party and quote I would take it a step further. I think giving cars when green, a megaphone on his standing committee would be a cancer on this entire Congress. None of us get to decide who the voters sent to Congress but his members of this body it is our job to set the standard for the conduct of those who serve here, especially when They cross the line into violence. The Republican talking point now seems to be. I condemn Congresswoman Green's words. But Madam speaker, her words air indefensible period and we must act not because it helps us or hurts them, but because it is the right thing to do for this institution and for America, and that from Congressman Jim McGovern from today. His floor debate, at one point of the representative before elected to Congress referred to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, saying that she should take quote a bullet to the head at her weekly news conference, this from the House speaker, I remained profoundly concerned about House Republicans leadership acceptance of extreme conspiracy theorist. Particularly to service their eagerness to reward a fool, a non adherent, a 9 11 truther, ah harasser of child survivors of school shootings and a value to give them valued committee positions, including who could imagine they would put such a person on the Education Committee today, and the House will vote to remove represent green from her seat on education and labor and the budget committees. That's just so unfortunate you would I think that the Republican leadership in the Congress would have some sense of responsibility to this institution, as they did when they did not see represented King of Iowa or two years ago for some reason. E have chosen not to go down that path. Even though we gave Mr Hoyer gave the leader McCarthy sufficient notice that this was ah, path. We would follow that early today from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. It was last night in

And I don't know, then. How you get through to them with some of the basic truths that they cannot accept, and so constantly lie about for what they believe is their own personal benefit their personal issues and in her case, it's guns. She also has tried to take her gun onto the house floor. So I just mentioned Sandy Hook. Marjorie Taylor Greene was assigned to the Education Committee by the Republican leadership in the House of Representatives. Nancy Pelosi is fuming. She said. How could they possibly assign her to the Education Committee when she has mocked the killing of little Children at Sandy Hook Elementary school, and she has mocked the killing of teenagers in high school at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. New York City beaches open for holiday weekend, no swimming allowed
"A few days at the beach is typically a no brainer for Memorial Day weekend needless to say it is a little bit more complicated this year some beaches are open some are restricting who can go others are restricting what you can do there here to tell us where new Yorkers and new Jerseyans can go to welcome the summer wireless socially distancing is WNYC's Karen Yi and the Jake often hearts of Gothamist Karen Jake hello hi David it it it there is still so much we don't know about cope with nineteen but many epidemiologists say that with social distancing precautions in place heading to the beach does not pose a large threat for people in low risk groups Cameron let's start with you governor Murphy said beaches would re open for the holiday weekend is that right yes that's right so Murphy has said if speech is re opened they need to limit the amount of people on the beach and enforced social distancing so it's really gonna be up to each municipality to decide how to do that and what parts of the beaches or boardwalks to re open so remember not all of the beach is closed during the pandemic some have already re opened and some remain partially close and it's equally as complicated in New York City right Jake governor Cuomo joined New Jersey Connecticut and Delaware to open up the beaches but mayor bill de Blasio technically won't open up city beaches that's right David New York City is fourteen miles on public beaches are technically close what that really means is the beaches are closed to swimming sports picnics many of the social things people go to the beach for but you can still walk sit on the beach or even dip your feet into the water up to your ankles the idea is to discourage nothing Yorkers from going to the beach so it's not over crowded what about beaches on Long Island to Jones beach the Hamptons these are very popular spots for new Yorkers or they could be an option many all island beaches will be open this weekend but they're not exactly rolling out the red carpet for us New York City residents several towns including East Hampton have plans to limit or entirely banned outsiders from their shores that's led to some regional contentions of Nassau County official had to walk back in down and out of towners on Nickerson beach after my colleague Sylvia Chang points out that beaches that receive federal funding must be open to the public the state run beaches like Robert Moses in Jones beach will be open to everyone but they're restricting capacity to fifty percent and governor Cuomo says people could be turned away from parking lot as early as ten AM single parking is always a problem and beaches in both states Karen tell us about the Jersey Shore is parking to be restricted even more than usual yes so again it's gonna come down to home rule it's New Jersey right so it's gonna be up to each town since sandy hook which is run by the National Park Service is limiting parking to fifty percent and so is island beach state park which is run by the state mayors have told me that they're gonna be announcing reminders on loudspeakers there's gonna be civilian ambassadors patrolling the boardwalk there's gonna be a lot of signage but really it's gonna have to come down to trust trust that people will do the right thing and act responsibly what Jake in New York City you have reported on members of the NYPD enforcing social distancing measures in physically aggressive ways in the subways and on city streets can new Yorkers expect a large police presence on the beaches what is the plan for monitoring resource can definitely expect to see a major law enforcement presence this weekend and why PDP stale has been up thirty percent they'll be joined by parks police and thousands of social distancing ambassadors similar to New Jersey if things get too crowded the mayor says they may even put up fencing literally barricading the beaches anyone who tries to swim will be ordered out well in New Jersey some mayors are concerned about not enough police presence on the beaches Cameron that what are you hearing I spoke two point pleasant beach mayor Paul Kenitra and he's very concerned about this so his speech is partially open not the boardwalk so this means that Jenkins beach is also gonna be close but the biggest problem for him and re opening everything is that he says he can't hire the seasonal officers who normally boost up as police force during the summer because all the training academies are closed so for the things that are open for the part of each that is open he says this weekend will be a test run for whether the precautions they've implemented will work we need to see how realistic it is to have our badge checkers wearing the mask and gloves and in hot weather we need to make sure that our lifeguards are able to you know the date people and do things appropriately with the set up that we have one up one down on the lifeguard stands in with the new half the filters for their resuscitation devices so the mayor said there's really no playbook for this I mean everybody is really trying out what works for their particular beach okay so if people can solve the puzzle of finding an open beach what happens when they get there will there be open public restrooms or boardwalk restaurants open for food pickup so curbside pickup is allowed for nonessential businesses take out is going to continue for restaurants a New Jersey recently allowed to go cocktails on the public restroom issue again that's going to depend on the town whether they decide to open those or how they apply limits to that the one thing that the state is encouraging is that everyone wear a mask right and it's the same thing in New York there will be some to go through the options available re sparked beaches are is open many of the vendors on Coney Island and they'll be some bathrooms and Porta potties starting this weekend and finally you keep in mind the water's going to be fifty five degrees not exactly swimming weather even if you are out yeah I think that's gonna keep a lot of people out of the water we'll have to hear much more about how it goes this weekend WNYC's Karen Yi and the Gothamist reporter Jake often hearts thank you for joining us thanks

That's my object because it's crippling case, it's devastating to my case. Your devastating. So lots more that we could talk about. But but that's where we stand right now. So you have seen a lot of news reports. I know because folks tweeted at us sent it to us on Facebook and Email you have seen reports that said judge ordered discovery in sandyhook case, that's true. But that's on hold pending the filing of this motion to be certified for an interlocutory appeal. If end win the Connecticut courts deny that motion, then he will have to start producing documents or face, contempt charges that will be really really interesting development. And it must be interesting. If the Connecticut appellate court takes this up on a peel. I I hope they don't right. It's very clear to me info wars is a wealthy outfit. It's hired council. That has already filed hundreds of documents in this case, they have already attempted to remove to federal court. It's the classic at again. I I I don't begrudge this. I don't pick a lawyer doing what what is best for your client. But it's a classic delaying tactic. And having to resolve these questions on an interlocutory appeal will delay getting the basic information that these plaintiffs need to to bring their case forward and that goes back to the very beginning. Look. The they make when they get the information their case may be fatally flawed, right? Like, it's it's really hard to prove actual malice and and Jones had this guy. I mean, you know, they they may prevail the plaintiffs in this case may only prevail against say Wolfgang Helbig, right? He's the guy who went on Alex Jones show and said, I'm a forensic investigator. And you can see how you know like that that it's a reasonable defense to say I brought an expert I did some research. And so, you know, I add that's that's enough due diligence that it's not reckless disregard for the truth, right? Like to to win. And that's true. By the way to win. What the plaintiffs are going to have to find is an Email from Alex Jones to somebody else on his staff or from one producer info wars to another staffer at info wars saying, yeah, we're. Going to run with the sandy hook thing. Again. Like, I can't believe the yokels that looks like, and there may be right that may exist. But if those documents don't exist than than there may not be a defamation case under the new, and that's just a problem with the law in the legal system because there's the malice is you're saying that a bunch of people whose kids were murdered are faking it, that's I don't cannot be defacto malice because that's how it is certainly malicious but actual malice in the New York Times. Standard does not mean proving the mental state of maliciousness. It means proving either that you did not care whether something was true or false or that you knew it was false. And well, I'm saying he should win. We're pro ching this or the legal system rather seems to be approaching this in a complete relativistic sense. All facts are could be true or false. There's no takes. No, like, there's some things that are so stupid and evil that just by saying them, you know, they're Fiqh like that just that end. There's there's only a few things like that in my book and pretending as though some parents kids were murdered by guns were faking it that's something that you know, is you're by definition, you know, is wrong. So that should be. That's myers. My case for it. So so noted I will tell you in this is free legal advice for Randa. The the the response is going to be hey, look, we tried to figure it out..

"Let's let the lawyers for your out the details, but he should just find him guilty of something he's guilty of something. And then Andrew Torres figure out. What that's that's so that's your job figure it out. I will say to you that is pint of what's what's going on in this case. So let's talk about that. From a good perspective. The parents of the Newtown victims who have sued sued, Alex Jones in state court in Newtown, Connecticut, right and emir. Immediately. You might ask yourself sort of the the diversity question. Right. Like, I Jones and lives in Texas info wars is based out of Texas. They've also sued two of his two of the business partners. Right. A company called Genesis communications network that is based out of Minnesota, and and Midas resources, which is the STA -tary supplement and garbage company. That runs ads on info wars that Alex Jones makes a reported seven to twelve million dollars per year hawking that nonsense because I guess if you're stupid enough to believe conspiracy theories, you're probably also stupid enough to believe in dietary supplements and come at me Midas resources feel free. So you might be saying how could a Connecticut group of plaintiffs? Sue, a Texas person, Texas business entities and Minnesota business entities in state court in Connecticut, couldn't you remove that to to federal court. And under diversity jurisdiction. Right. Their citizens of different states. And the answer is that. That's exactly what Alex Jones tried to do in this case and what the sandy hook. Parents lawyer did that's clever and is perfectly acceptable practice. Is they added as a defendant a guy named Corey Slanco Corey sclera worked as a driver and a camera operator for a guy named Wolfgang? How big Wolfgang in turn was the expert, which I say with sarcasm quotes around it that Alex Jones had on his show who was stenciled debunked the video, and you know, is how big himself is a sandy hook truth denier. He runs a site called sandy hook Justice dot com that that is terrifying. And and as a sidebar we can't go into he's representing himself in. Lawsuit. And he has filed the kind of delightfully mad pleadings that only a pro se plaintiff can pro se defendant conspiracy theorist can file a case. It's it's it's truly impressive the the level to which he does not understand the law and thinks that he does it's amazing. But the important part is buying cluding. Cory who the facts are clear drove for Mr. Halberg and worked as a camera operator for Mr. Halbig buying cluding Corey as a defendant, Corey lives in Connecticut. So that defeats complete diversity. Alex Jones, remove the case to federal court. And again, this is all strategic, right? The plaintiffs want the case in state court for exactly the reasons that you've just identified right because if it gets to a jury in Connecticut that jury is gonna find out Jones guilty of something right there. They're going to listen to this nonsense, and they are going to ruling favor of the plaintiffs. If it goes into federal court, a federal court is very likely to entertain a motion to dismiss on some of the technical legal reasons that we've talked about so July thirteenth case was removed to federal court. I'm going to upload that to the show nuts. The argument that Alex Jones made if that was fraudulent joinder. Yeah. You've only brought in this Corey guy because he's in Connecticut that the claim should be dismissed out against Cory. And then you should keep this case in in federal court and the federal court said, no, we're not we're not gonna do that the. The standard is that as long as the complaint alleges viable causes of action against Cory slinky the plaintiffs have the right to sue him. And they have the right to sue him as a part of this action. And if that happens strategically to defeat your diversity jurisdiction too bad plaintiff is the master of his or her own complaint, and as long as they're properly here that's not a fraudulent joinder, and they go through the specifics of of the allegation side of allied over that for time. But so in November federal court remanded the the cause of action back down to the state court. And so you would think that what happens at that point..

"Halberg, we're gonna talk about him in a minute referred to the shootings as a hoax and fake news in less than two minutes of eighty three minutes show. However, almost immediately thereafter after continuing to examine and question the prevailing narrative, Mr. Jones concluded that the shooting happened. He has said so many times since then. That's how again that was filed as of the day of this recording. That was filed on January seventeenth twenty nineteen in court that appears to be false, right? Like that that from her everything I can tell in researching this lawsuit that that's not what happened in Eddie event you as the defendant do not get to carry. You're not entitled to that characterization of the facts before discovery, right? Like that's at best been on the facts, right? I want to go to the New York Times because I tried to find the original of this. And I think Alex Jones has removed it because of the lawsuit which makes sense the New York Times in may of twenty eight teen as this lawsuit was filed was quoting the Alex Jones final statement on sandy hook. And I wanna point out what I did for you listeners. I went to info wars dot com and type that into the search bar, and I hope you use protect I was just going to say, I very stupidly did it on a regular like. I should've clearly used incognito browser. But. Yeah. That doesn't show up in a search. I think there's some website you can use to not even give the website like the fact that you're visiting you know, like tonight, even like, whatever ads are on it, or whatever I think there's something you can use that. Somebody tweeted us. Let's pretty sure that exists that could prove useful for lots of browsing reasons. Yeah. So here's the times quoting Alex Jones in his final statement on sandy hook, quote, if children were lost in sandy hook, my heart goes out to each and every one of those parents, and the people that say their parents that I see on the news. The only problem is I've watched a lot of soap operas, and I've seen actors before and of. That does not seem to match up with this Renta's characterization of what Alex Jones is set and and case closed, and how do you how do you match that against? Against saying, right. Like suppose a week later. Right. He says on one of his shows. Oh, yeah. Well, right. You know, I believe, you know, certainly something happened at sandy hook, right? Like, how do you? How do you? Up to your your. Okay. You're the law, man. You figure it out. I think what she did. Like, if a jury if you send a jury and say, hey, this guy has a show with you know, I don't know if it's a million. Yeah. "It is death over Email and that required the Pozner family to relocate to a community with twenty four hour round the clock security, this has real human costs. This weaponize ING morons to terrorize innocent people and as the complaint alleges doing so deliberately right the complaint alleges as a matter of fact, Alex Jones knows that the sandy hook shooting was not up false flag operation and continues to say false things about it. Anyway. So so open shut case for me at there. I hear you. There are some interesting legal issues with respective. So that the first is the sandy hook shooting occurred in twenty twelve. And the statute of limitations on defamation is two years. And so the the complaint involves the continuing repetition of those statements over time and the issue that the courts are not well prepared to address is what happens when you do what Alex Jones did. Okay. And and let's specifically define what he's done in this case, which is. Beginning with very very explicit statements in twenty thirteen. This is a false flag operation this was orchestrated by the Obama government. These people are actors this is all made up and then over time making the statements slightly more nuanced. In order to kind of create an atmosphere of plausible deniability while continuing to dog whistle, right? Never walking back the original claim. And so the statements that are within the two year statute of limitations. And this lawsuit was filed may of twenty eighteen right? So anything may of twenty sixteen or later. Well, one of the things that that the complaint does is is is go through the continuing reference that builds upon those earlier statements, right? But as a result, right? It's it's not quite the Saint like usually think of a defamation case as involving a single statement or set of statements or an article right like when I get clients who call me and say, I'm being sued for defamation or ally. Bosnich I'd like to say this about somebody. I'm not. Get sued for defamation. Right. You you. You wanna focus on the content of those original statements. Right. But what happened in the in the Alex Jones? Cindy, okay. So what happened in pizza gate is again, a second issue that I think the courts really are not well prepared to grapple with yet. And that is the cumulative effect of multiple statements, right? That there's not any one. There are few in pizza gate, right? But in pizza gate, what happened was you you had series of statements that built upon each other that created this overall gestalt of okay, right? There's comet ping pong and Hillary Clinton, and and and and John Podesta are raping children in the basement, but you can't find a single statement. Right. That that puts all of those elements together, it's this sort of slow burn over time in the sandy hook is is. Kind of a similar situation where the natural tendency. I think of most decent people is not to sue overstatement number one. But then now you've had statements to through ten through fifteen through one hundred and the later ones may be less inflammatory. But may be fanning the fires from the original one. That's another. That's another kind of. Scenario in which in which the courts are ill prepared to handle. Here's how Alex Jones lawyer. Mark randazzo. It's Mark granddaughters firm. It's a it's a it's a junior partner named j Wollman who's writing this. Mark Randazzo has sniped back at us on Twitter. So just for for for disclaimer purposes, but here's how he describes the lawsuit. He says plaintiffs and their counsel of already tried this case in the press falsely claiming that Mr. Jones himself orchestrated a campaign to continually state that the shooting never happened despite the complaint being filled with statements attributed to Mr. Jones and his related companies fewer identified as false, and no plaintiff was identified by defendants, rather they assert that listeners quote would understand these statements to assert that the sandy hook massacre was staged and that the plaintiffs fabricated the deaths of their loved ones the allegations. To Mr. Jones statements are all either summaries of what other people said questions about evidence or opinions as to the credibility of the evidence. The sole exception is from December twenty eighth twenty fourteen more than three years before the complaint was filed where Mr. Jones relying on Mr..

And so I'm not going to get in bed with you. Because you don't love the spirit of Justice. You love your father, the devil. All right. So what's going on with this sandyhook lawsuit? Yeah. So let me say as as kind of an overview, I really have difficulty with this. Right. So what is the lawsuit about the lawsuit is about Alex Jones repeatedly over a period of years, and I'm going to link there's a seven little over seven minute video from media matters for America. That is a compilation of everything Alex Jones has said about sandy hook. It is disgusting. Right. He is accused of being a false flag government operation planted by the Obama administration. And that the the the the parents and the victims are crisis actors, and it's it's just it's it's horrible a thing as you can do in politics. Ix longstanding listeners know that nine eleven troopers have come after the memory of a childhood friend of mine. Liz Ueno who was one of the people who died on the Pennsylvania flight that crashed on nine eleven and they looked at her photo that was circulating on the internet. They're only a couple, and you know, and they've come up with all these crackpot theories about how she's not a real person in a composite, and, you know, this is part of the nine eleven truth or movement and not not a close friend. Tell you that, you know, you're part of a government conspiracy on the other hand as between you, and I like, I certainly. Early tend to want to come down on the on the free speech side of the equation. And and let me be very very clear. I am concerned on the merits that a court will have difficulty distinguishing drawing the kinds of bright lines between Alex Jones and say opening arguments. I I think he can write those I think you can describe what they are. But I think that the I think that maybe have difficulty isn't quite the right word. But I think that the way in which our existing defamation laws are phrased and interpreted is not well suited to resolve those distinctions. How about that? Maybe that's a better way to put it, right? That were were operating in a New York Times v Sullivan world, which thinks of you know. Defamation as being something that happens in newspapers and is not well suited to adjudicate. Ing somebody like Alex Jones. You you. You had a thought them. I'm I'm ju I'm going to sit here and listen more because I'm curious I feel like this should be a pretty clear line. But maybe I'm wrong. So I'll wait until you break it down. All right. Well, so let's explain I the the clear harm that that comes about here. Right. And this should go without saying, but whenever you're talking about free speech issues. I think it's really really important to talk about the the human costs here. We know what happened with pizza gate, right? An armed person showed up with a with an assault rifle and threatened to shoot up the place. If he didn't get to see the basement of comet ping pong to release the kids that were being raped by. Hillary Clinton and John Podesta comet ping pong. Does not have a basement. Fortunately, that person was talked off the ledge and didn't shoot up the place. Alex Jones has done the same thing with respect to sandy hook as he did with pizza gate. This is I'm gonna read directly from the New York Times article. But, but this is a established fact that sandy hook families have been followed videotaped harassed by Alex Jones fans, and by others who are conspiracy theorists demanding that they reveal their role in the conspiracy. When the town of Newtown, Connecticut, put up various monuments to the sandy hook victims, those monuments have been defaced vandalized stolen, broken. And just as another example, Leonard Posner father one of the victims was stalked by an Alex Jones. Dave OT by somebody who listens.
