"It's Where you see Jerry Seinfeld, Sandra Bernhardt, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle. All the Great Comedians have performed there over the years. It has been shut down now since the pandemic, but tomorrow Caroline's on Broadway will be opening for the first time in over the year over year. So we're delighted to have the founder and owner of the club. Caroline Hirsch, herself with us. Good morning. Good morning, Caroline. How you doing, Caroline? Morning, Michael. How are you and Len? How are you? All right, We're fine. So so, So let us know. I mean, you can't just flip the lights on right and expect everybody. Tonto. Come running back. How difficult is it to reopen after over a year? It's It's just, like reopen, like opening a new business. I have to tell you that, you know we've been there, you know, running the air conditioning, the Friars, the kitchen equipment, the ice makers. I mean, it's like everything has to be like redone because everything has been shut down for over 15 months. So it's it's a reprogramming. It's even hiring new staff because a lot of my staff have moved away. They're going back to live with their parents somewhere in the Midwest. Um and it's it's just been. It's been quite a nightmare to reopen. To tell you the truth. It's very, very hard for you know all of these smaller venues to get rocking and rolling again. How tough was it to actually stay in business? I mean, you had to cover some bills for the last time. I don't have any months 13 months. 13 months. And you know, everybody thinks like, Oh, you're closed, So no bills air coming in, But there's leasing equipment. The bills still come in this electricity. This cast is all the stuff that just every month you get a bill for So we were able to, you know, keep the business rolling through there. There's rent to be paid and all of that. I mean, I happen to have a good landlord that understands the situation and I think ah lot of language in the city. Understand the situation and they really have no choice. I mean, were you know if they put a venue at a business who's going in there anyway? So so, Caroline people are understanding. Yeah. Now you discovered some heavy hitters over the years. You know Jerry Seinfeld. Jay Leno did any of those guys who've made bazillions of dollars come to your aid in any way to help you keep the thing going during the pandemic? You know, like, and I wouldn't expect anybody do that. But I expect some people to drop by. And like you do a congratulations that I'm still open in business. You know, I I'm in business almost 40 years now that's a feat in New York City. S so I'm kind of proud of that. And I think you know will be will be up and running, and I think lots of people are coming out. We have this weekend. Dunno. Rollins, Who's you know Ashley Larry from the ship l show and, um he's doing good business. And we expect to be sold out on all the shows. But the thing is that we're almost like we're less than half capacity there. So that's all the star himself. What are what are the covert rules for you when you reopen tomorrow? And nobody's really clear on it because you could have Madison Square Garden filled up. But yet I have to be in my club. There has to be six ft. Distancing from parties that don't know each other. So you go try to figure that at every day it changes. I mean, the guidance has been pretty poor on what to do, and I I worry about all of the other little clubs around the country. You know, because they are really, really suffering and can't don't have enough money to even reopen because it takes money to reopen. And a lot of these little couldn't go ahead. I was gonna say, you know, I've covered Broadway, so I've been up around Times Square, and it's looking a little seedy these days. You concerned about the slide of the neighborhood kind of back in 19 seventies. Uh, well, you know, I was the first one to be on Broadway way back. I opened in the early nineties there, and I remember what we went through and trying to clean up the neighborhood and yeah, and it's not only Broadway and not only Times Square, but it's the rest of the city Also. I mean, it's there is homeless on the streets. I mean, these people are mentally ill. I've watched them They're not criminals. They're just not able to cope any longer and should be taken care of. Yeah, they're on with Caroline Hirsch. Caroline's on Broadway reopens tomorrow. You know one of your faves Chris Rock. We had some comments from him the other day about how difficult comedy is these days. Does the PC police is out to get you can offend anybody. Are you finding that as well as you eat back up in your business. What we find that that that's that's been something that's been going on for a few years now, Theo only way that you can, you know, get away with something that's politically not correct. In a joke is that if it really made the point About the non the politically thing that's incorrect, and I found that that a brilliant comic could get away with that, like somebody like Chris can get away with us. But we're finding that that mean Jerry Seinfeld won't play colleges. I am longer because of that, so Hey, Do you have any, uh some other roads? You think there's gonna be some surprise heavy hitters Just gonna show up unannounced to help you out in the beginning here we shall see, I'm not so sure. But what we shall see which we'll see Who shows up. I mean, we have great shows coming up in the future. Gilbert Gottfried's coming up. Just hilarious. If any Rodia JB smooth we have We have a great lineup all through the summer and anybody..

Dave Chappelle Chris Rock Jay Leno Sandra Bernhardt Jerry Seinfeld Caroline Hirsch Michael New York City Chris Times Square Ashley Larry Gilbert Gottfried 13 months Len tomorrow Rodia JB six ft Rollins first time almost 40 years

Lgbtq plus folks. we've had to seek out that energy when we didn't get enough from our own mother's sometimes we found it in an auntie a friend or a mentor. Sarah Chalke Talks Rick & Morty

"About what a dream career in acting might be. Sarah Chalke has sort of had it. She's been on some of the best love TV shows of all time, Roseanne. Scrubs How I met your mother. Not too shabby, right? But you know things must be slowing down during the pandemic for actors. Well, not for Sarah. Now she's part of the one of the most popular shows during this pandemic, the animated series Rick and Morty, where she does the voice of Beth Sanchez. I had the chance to talk with Sarah Chalke out in Vancouver, British Columbia last year after season four of the show rap. We talk from her home, NBC. Don't worry, I wasn't NBC hears our conversation. Hi, Sarah. How are you? Hey, I'm great. Nice to talk to you. Where are you? I'm in British Columbia and s O feel like you'd be here. You're still able to work right? You're on Rick and Morty. It's animated show. Are you still able to do voices? Yes, I'm I've been recording three cartoons up here, and it's been such an interesting adventure to find like the most acoustically positive sound And really, that's like a dead sense. You have to find somewhere small and s O. I started out in the lower bunk bed surrounded by every do they and pillow that was available to me and then try taking the kids play tent and duct taping seven moving blankets around it. Um and then you know you're in this kind of like dark space. And then I take like make a stack with like a thing of poker chips and Harry Potter books and then bounced the microphone on top and hope for the best. And I also say that like Beth on Rick and Morty Is not like a A super kid friendly cartoon character like No. Are you worried about your kids here in here and what's going on with mom in the room? So what if he like up and you know you're recording off campus in a sound contained sound booth? Um, so yeah, yeah, that's also been part of this figure out a way to not only keep the dogs from barking, um, and hearing birds, but also, uh, the Children not hearing you. So it's an interesting um Dynamic. They get to have some really loud. Screen time, huh? Get they get to watch their iPad as loud as they want so that mom could say rated r things into a microphone in the bunk bed. Totally. I mean, I was already worried about like my daughter who's three going to preschool and like she loves we have all the Rick and Morty like stuffed animals, and plus, she's and so she'll play with them. If you like, mister Q. B Butthole. Yeah, I don't know how that's gonna go over playing that with other Children. It's been really amazing to see how big Rick and Morty has become, like I remember when it was sort of like this little niche. Animated chauffeur for nerds and for You know, for people who like really kind of sophisticated comedy, and then it just becomes this worldwide phenomenon. And it made me think about your character, Beth. So for people who haven't seen the show, can you tell me who Beth was when you started and sort of who she's become, as the serious has gone on. Yes. Oh, so she's the sort of mother of the family. Um, Rick and Morty is the grandfather of the grandson. And you think you're gonna watch this grandfather grandson? Go on these like wild sci fi adventures. But what it ends up going into is like these real kind of rough family dynamics and on day kind of You know, not just this sci fi cartoon but asking these existential questions like if life is meaningless, and there are infinite universes, does anything really matter? So that's rickon Gordy in general, and then the best starting out kind of that, you know, as the Matriarch of the family and playing the mom and then over time, And as the seasons went on, you find out how much she is like her dad and the fact that when she was little, he had to build her a secret world. Because she was making whips to make people like her and mind control hair clips. As a young girl. You find out that she is kind of a lot like her dad, and and then and then, as the seasons go on. She wants to either stay or leave, And we don't know if she's a clone or not a clone, and that's been super fun to play kind of death. And then this alternate best as well. Space that it's funny like it. Z must be a challenge to sort of play your character and also sort of more sinister. We're like, deceptive version of your character. But it's all the same voice like You're not changing too much, you know. Yeah, Totally, totally. It's been. It's been super fun, and obviously we didn't know at any point that that was coming like we just get the scripts as we get them. We have no knowledge of. You know what's happening down the road in the future, so that part's so fun. I mean, to see like a Rick and Morty script in My Inbox is one of my favorite things because the minds of Justin Royal and and Dan Harmon are Unbelievable. There. So the scripture so smart and so funny and so wild. I love them. It's the number to show in all of North America like we were looking at in the US anyway. We were looking at the survey was conducted in the US to see what TV shows were being binge the most during the pandemic. So number one friends. Friends is number one. Right? Yes, I love it. I'm a big friends fan. And then sort of like the anti friends Rick and Morty is is not know that his number two in some states record is number one. What do you make of it? What do you make of it that during the pandemic, it's gotten even more successful. That's really cool. I didn't know that. I think I think people want to laugh and people want to escape into another world. And I think that it's a You know, a time for For a real need for for comedy, and the growth of It has been interesting to watch kind of through the eyes of comic con over the years like we would go to comic con You're one. It hasn't been released yet. So all the questions were to Dan Harmon about community and then the next year, it was like a couple of weeks walking around and then the next It was like a sea of Mr Poopy bottles and bricks and all these different characters was kind of cool. I get to see how it's how it's growing, but I'm glad it's bringing people less. Is it this time? Is it ever a bit intense? Like I know that I know that Even Dan and Justin, the folks behind the show have had to come out and talk to the fans of the show. Because they could be intense. They could be a bit toxic. That could be a bit sort of awful. Now when we're talking about a pretty small Group of fans of the show, but I can't imagine what that's like to be sort of in it to be in in the show, with all that's going on. Yeah, it is. It is wild. The degree to which you know I can't watch all the little pieces and I am you know, I think that That, you know, I don't. I don't actually read a ton of those, uh, those sites and comments, but I think it's It's cool how passionate people are about it. It reminds me because when you started, I think the first way we all knew you was when you were on when you were on Roseanne and you were brought in court famously, is second Becky. Like one of the biggest shows of the nineties, You replaced the original actress who played the daughter Becky, until the original Becky came back again. From what? I understand you were in high school in Canada, and then it got that gig. Yeah, it was crazy. I was 16 when I auditioned and I I was living in Vancouver and working on a couple things that were filming up here, but really haven't done anything under very much. And and, uh, got this audition and put myself on tape. And, um, I think we even like Mailed a VHS tape, You know, down to the states, and they called and said, We're gonna fly you down for an audition on day were seven of us and all the others were like 21 living in L. A actresses and all of us were doing this scene with Glenn Quinn. Who played Mark back his husband and the whole scene was like making out. You're making out with him. And you're like, you know, get job. The gas station, baby. Come and get it down to the gas station, baby. Come here. That was the same like there's this 24 year old, handsome Irish actor. How am I gonna remember one line and they said we'll let you know within a week. And then, a week later, they called back and said, Okay, come back tomorrow and do a scene with Roseanne and was like on the infamous coach on the set, and they were calling out. You know, camera numbers and having a laugh track and seeing if you could kind of adjust to those elements, and then they called and said, You got it. And Remember going to a party that night and telling a couple people and it just sounded so crazy. Sounded crazy. Yeah. Sounded crazy that you were in. You were in high school, and you were telling people having to be on the number one sitcom in the world. They would have been right to be like They're not. You're not like taking over for someone else like they're gonna not have like It just sounded insane. And we already had, like great seven. We already had, like someone like lied about being on the mini pops. Remember the many pox which were so amazing? I don't I don't know. The minibar like a Canadian band was like a Canadian kids. And you would like You know they would sing covers, and they were dressed these cool eighties clothes and they were amazing and someone in our schools that they were going to be in the mini pops. That wasn't true. So all the sudden I felt this feeling of like I'm lying about being in many parts, and then so then I kind of spread it on our school pretty quick. And then they called me back on Monday morning, and they said We're having cold feet about replacing Becky. So we don't know if we're gonna do it. We will do will pick you if we do it, but we're gonna put you on hold for four months. We're going to tell you in September just got this is jumping. You couldn't be a Minnie Bob situation, right? You're gonna have to go back to all of them ago. No, no, they change their mind like all you have Sara? Sure they did Change your mind. And then you then you find out Yeah. And then s O was my great 12 year and, um And I would go back and forth because they would shoot two or three weeks on one week off. So we would shoot Monday to Thursday. I would get on a plane first thing Friday morning and be at school in Canada on Friday afternoon and then and then fly back Sunday night or stay home for a week if we had a week off and kind of commuting back and forth I'm really interested in people like you who have On gun traditional first big gig like I was talking to Linda Cardellini the other day who played Lindsay on Freaks and geeks, Right? And you know, so there you go. She's her big break. Is this show that considered to be the greatest show of all time and then gets canceled after one season and I said, You know, what does that do for you for the rest of your career, and similarly for you your first Big is to replace beloved Actor. In a show that is the number one show on that, and it was it was controversial. When it happened, it was people couldn't believe that it was happening. And then I wonder if that taught you anything in your career going forward, whether it had hardened to you or heart And you do you think it did something to you? I think both of those things I think, you know, I mean, because Yeah, came. She would least he was Becky from seasons 1 to 5. I was six and seven. She came back for the beginning of eight. And then I came back for the rest of eight. And for nine. And so it was definitely, you know. As a kid. Um, it's you know, it's confusing and hard when they brought her back, and then they called this. Okay. Now, will you come back? And and so that piece, I think, um Was the challenging part of it for sure, And the other piece that was challenging was just going from complete obscurity to going on the number one show, and then you're at that age where gynecology just kind of wanna blend of a sudden that piece of it was it was hard, but they incredible part was the obvious, unbelievable gift of working with John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf and Roseanne and Sara Gilbert and Johnny Galecki and Sandra Bernhardt. And I mean it was It was crazy. It was like stepping into having not really worked out much to working with this top, unbelievably talented comedians and just watching them. Work and what They would do with a script from a Monday morning table read Till Thursday night Tape night. It was such a huge learning experience and so so interesting and obviously You know, open so many doors for me. I mean, I was Like my entire diamonds, girls. My nickname was second package would be like we got second back in the seventies. Really Good. Yeah. Yeah,

"This is what I do, and I'm just all by myself. Letterman and now Letterman. I liked him in the years because the show was organic on NBC and where those tennis shoes Adidas, and he was a younger guy, and they threw things off a building and watch them like a watermelon smash against the ground and so forth. He would have Sandra Bernhardt and guests like then brother Theodore and Just bizarre, kinda, just a really fun show. Then when he got to CBS, it was less organic, and it was just a lot of pomp and circumstance and so forth, and that that really happens with everybody when they are on their second contract, so to speak, whether it's a rock band or something as they get older, whatever it's always great when they had that organic young energy And so one thing I liked about Jay Leno, though, is J didn't have an agent and I don't like agents. And J always did things with a handshake and that really made me like the guy. Hey, wasn't yeah, great interviewer. People below. I I I'm just saying he wasn't known for his interviewing skills. He's one of the nicest guys I'm told in the business, So everybody has a nice thing to say. For the most part. One more thing. You were just talking about Letterman. I said it earlier at much. Sure. You picked it up. But Letterman really owes a lot to Steve Allen. Because if you watch the old Steve Allen reruns from the fifties, he's doing wacky stuff with Louis Nye and don knots and all these goofy characters and he's got the phone post. And don't forget about time Bomb and posted. Yes, who was a great guy? Really beloved guy is also by the way, a war hero. Some people don't know that I did not know that I did not know that he flew missions over Normandy. Uh, so yeah, it was on an episode of to tell the truth, which he was great on by the way back in the day back, and, uh, that was my kid. I would watch Tom posting and, uh Let's see to tell the truth, Peggy Yeah. Biggie, CASS, Right. Oh, my God. I always thought as a kid. I always that is that all these people doing life they're they're grown up to work as a contestant on to tell the truth. Always wanted. It wasn't till they get older. They known for their professional Panelists on these game shows, and they make a career out of it. Well, they did. And you know, JP Morgan, I was She was on the gun short that What else is this woman then Turns out she had a career in the fifties and a lot of them did And who knows? I mean, there's so much we're going down such a big, deep rabbit hole. I've got to take a break. At this point. I can't stand it. Larry, You're a great guy. I really appreciate it. And I'll never forget you. I've talked to your son a few times. I've had that pleasure. And it was great to kind of talk to you as well. Jordan. My son will be joining us. I believe as the producer of the next couple of nights. Rob's gonna be off for a few nights, so I'll pass along the good word. Thank you, Larry. Be well, Thanks, Starting. Bye. Bye bye. Quick time out. Jordan Ricin for Mr Ray Dan, raise on vacation and will continue right after these words. It's night side with Dan Ray. I'm.

Super Soul Sexuality with Rabbi Lisa Grushcow

"Both been really drawn to Judaism. I know for me personally. So many of my artistic. Inspirations I mean not consciously but they're all Jewish like Bette midler Sandra Bernhardt Barbra streisand lake. These people have informed so much of my view of the arts. And you know there's a strong part of what they do is related to Judaism and their spirituality and same for me. My I like comedy against version was Sarah Silverman who Super Jewish. And she's not embrace it and what I love about that. Religion is how it's both faith but also like an intellectual practice and people love to be conflicted in argue and disagree and I was raised Catholic. But I've never felt that catalyst ISM was really a space to question and I just love it. You get to do that in the Jewish faith. I don't think we could have found anyone better than Rabbi Lisa Grechko. Who is our special guest today? She used the Montreal Legend would you say the rabbi well she's a Rockstar as much as a rabbi. Can Be yes she is a rabbi at Temple Emanuel Shalom here in Montreal. She is the first queer. Rabbi that I personally know. She's quite famous here for really embracing progressive views for a religious leader. I'm in her sermons or super popular like people actually go out on a Friday night. Yeah I heard about it from a friend of mine. Who'S NOT Jewish? Who was just going and really found something real there. I feel she would be a great character on sex in the city. Like the girls would go to my sermon. I mean I just think we need rabbi Grechko in our lives in many ways as possible so we had a great conversation with her about sexuality. Faith family even divorce because she she has the same sex partner but she was divorced in the past and that sounded like it was a bigger problem in her community than being a lesbian. Rabbi crush go also does a lot of interfaith works. He works with Muslim. Meteors Christian leaders and it was really important for us to go beyond the politics of the day or whatever opinion people can have about different religions and some listeners might be atheists or some people listening might be fervent believers. We wanted to go beyond that and ask the big super bowl questions through. Rabbi you really got into Lake you we got rabbi Grechko set up a new. Didn't waste a second to get into your big oprah like question what came first in Your Life God or same sex desire. I was conscious of my spirituality. Let's say and religious sense of connection before I was aware of my own sexuality and then I was a relatively late bloomer. I wasn't out 'til My mid twenty say so for a while there was a real sense of struggle. And how would navigate those things together But that was more. A challenge with institution spiritually. That piece always stage. Did you feel spiritual As a child because I felt very I relate because I did feel as before I was kind of socialized in school and the world I felt the presence of a higher power. Is that what you're referencing? I had I had You know it's interesting because that's one of the things that might be different about Judaism in some ways that were so community based in so behaviorally based so I was very connected to the Jewish community as a kid. I went to a Jewish day school. I went to synagogue on a regular basis Shabat Dinners. Were part of our family life family celebration so all of those things were part of it. Some of the deeper connection came through learning which Jewish is a very spiritual activity kind of encountering sacred texts and asking questions and I grew up. Thanks to my parents with a lot of nature. A lot of travel lot of just sense of of being connected to something bigger you know going out in the middle of the night and lying down on a blanket and watching star shower I would say for me. It only took on a deeper resonance. Actually when I was struggling with coming out and figuring out what that meant for my path towards the rabbinate that was in some ways the closest that I got to a sense of calling or a Pitney because it felt like there's this path that I'm on and it's not going to be as smooth as I thought it would be so if I'm going to be on this path that has to really matter to me. It has to really be what I feel like I should be doing. Were you looking for answers? And that moment I think it was much more a feeling of of yearning of desire of closeness and relationship. I would say a sense that there was something someone who I couldn't didn't WanNa walk away from you said that coming out brought you closer to God. Can you talk about what way it brought you closer to God? I mean if you look at the story of the Hebrew Bible though stories that you've learned as a kid for US issues. One of the central parts of that story is the story of the exodus from Egypt. And it's a story of if you if you know the Hebrew going from meets rhyme. Which is the word for Egypt? But literally means the narrow place to a place of openness and possibility and the God who speaks to Moses out of the burning Bush. It's often terribly mistranslated as I am that I am. You know that Wayne was assessed. Who are you and imagine the Ten Commandments? Among God says I am that I am but it really is. I will be and so from me. Coming out was a very It connected me to that story of leaving a place of of narrowness and constraint and having a new sense of of possibility and freedom And to me that was a very religious spiritual story which I understood in a whole different way. I'm certainly not the first to do that. And that story has been used by so many people in so many important ways but for me. It really resonated. At that time John were usual. Kid I think maybe the arts for me and like my experience of the arts was the closest that came to spirituality as a kid but other than you know just loving Bible stories. I enjoyed it in the same way that I enjoyed fairy tales. You know what I mean. I don't think I really thought that. Much about my spirituality growing up Christian for me. I wasn't necessarily ashamed of being queer or being gay but shame was definitely an undertone in what in what you're describing it doesn't sound like that was your experience. It sounds like it was quite beautiful discovery for you to lean on that same sex desire and that queen is that was within you. I think in that sense it really Revealed from a Fault. Line between institutionalized religion spirituality And you know it's it's ironic because I'm a representative of of organized religion though. I sometimes joke. That Judaism is as disorganized. Religion is one can get. We don't have a central hierarchy in line of authority. You know it's a good thing now. I think it's a good thing and the rabbi isn't with direct line to God. The rabbi is a teacher and a member of the community so there isn't a sense of of infallibility or of kind of being closer to God than anybody else I love So that's you know when we we tend to be an argumentative argument to people and it's not a dog. Matic religion by enlarge. It's much more about what you do then kind of signing onto a creed and so by and large. There's a lot of room to move in that. But I grew up in a an arm of Judaism which has changed since but then wasn't ordaining. Lgbt folks that piece became a real real faultline for me. And I did grow up with not anything that anybody said. But we're not seeing anybody who looked like me and having an old you know commentary that was on our in our pews at the synagogue which spoke about that chapter in Leviticus and same sex relationships as being. I don't remember what the language was whether it's something around depravity and paganism in that kind of thing so that I remember but it wasn't the overall messaging you said something about spirituality and religion and I think a lot of people feel spiritual but don't necessarily want to belong to a religion that's more organized or more conservative more conservative. I understand but I sometimes worry that we sell ourselves short by not looking because I think when we look were sometimes surprised by what we find you know and the fact is organized religion and institutions as much as they are like dirty. Words can do things that you can't do when you're just meeting in somebody's living room right. We can create sacred space. We can organize community together. We can be there for each other and offer things in different ways that you can't if it's more do it yourself you know and I figure religions have been asking spiritual questions for Millennia so to be able to come in and be part of that conversation right instead of feeling like you have to start from zero and make it up from you as you go along. I think is really powerful.
