"Golden Gate Bridge Road work and hasn't been the same since that happened, But you know, it's all right. We're making our way Wednesday. Or halfway today. Exactly Well, today, I'm I'm broadcasting, of course, is always from my home here in San Jose. And this morning, there's gonna be some changes for people that are driving. Kim was caught in some traffic. If you're driving in downtown San Jose, things are going toe look a little bit different. So San Pedro Square. It's been redone in recent years. It's really nice to have a lot of outdoor dining if you will go online and you're looking for places where they're doing distance dining well. This is one of the places that they mentioned. Well, it's going to get even better. They are going to close San Pedro Street between Santa Clara and ST John ST starting this morning. So there's going to be some barriers. You need to keep that in mind if you drive around downtown San Jose, and it's all to allow what we've been seeing in places like Oakland and in parts of San Francisco. It's going allow these restaurants to start moving out onto the street, and they're calling the alfresco dining program and gonna last through September at the very least. And I applaud it. You know, there's a lot of restaurants in downtown San Jose that like I mentioned Have been doing a good job with e distancing moving into the front of the restaurant, and this is just going to let them expand even more, But you know in this area, and I don't know if you know San Jose very well. But the San Pedro Square. It's a very popular place. There's nightclubs there. There's a lot of bars over there. And this is what we need to dio. If we want to continue to allow these businesses to make at least a fraction of the money that they are, because when you're looking at the numbers And when Governor Newsome is holding these, you know, press briefings talking about his dimmer switch, and I know so many businesses from, you know restaurants to Flores to hair salons. Are just waiting for something positive to come out of the news. Now California's Health and Human Services secretary, Dr Mark Golly, he's kind of defending this this back and forth a dimmer switch that the governor has been using. Here he is. From the outset, We envision re opening as a dimmer switch. We've described it. It's not a light switch that goes on and on. It's a dimmer switch, and I'd like to say the governor's finger is on the dimmer switch. We're prepared to toggle back and forth, making the necessary modifications based on the data that we see so that if we need Thio have more closures at one time, and we can change them in the future. We're prepared to do that. But it's the uncertainty that is bad for business. I understand the dimmer switch. I completely support the dimmer switch, but it makes things hard if you're a shopping, um all right, a shopping mall and you're open for five days. And in all these businesses start, you know, prepping for that hiring people you know, doing the distancing putting in the time in the work, and then all of a sudden All those days of work is just a raised because the infection rose, which they dio when you start having people together. Ashley Flowers is the manager at Insignia Salon, a Walnut creek and we've been talking about hair salons because it's one of those things. People immediately missed right. The pandemic hit and you're like, shoot. Had my and my haircut scheduled for next week, Right? We will have another nails done or anything like that. And some people. It doesn't bother them, right? I mean, Kim, you and I were talking about this yesterday. We don't get our I mean, your husband is not a good hairstylist. You're not going back to him, but I need to get my head. You're fired. Sorry, but yeah, but you know what? Others the lines. You know, people look in the mirror, and they're they're you know, they're not feeling good When the missus pandemic Maybe you're looking at your hair and it's it seems superficial, right? It seems like really in the midst of the pandemic. You care about your hair. Some people do, though they look in the mirror and you don't like how they look and they're sad and it it can make you feel even worse if you have, you know, three inches of grey hair coming out and you're used to covering it up and So you want thesis wants to reopen, but Ashley flowers with Insignia, Salon said. You know they're going to put in the time they're going to put in the work to at least be outside for a long possible. It's hard and stressful. So, uh, It's going to take about an hour every day to set up and it's gonna take about an hour every day to take down. It takes multiple people to do it. We're thankful so way could only.

A boy claimed he was abused by a pastor back in two thousand one and two thousand two when he was just twelve and thirteen years old it happened at a Catholic church in Covina at the time the archdiocese decided to transfer the pastor to another church in Ventura, but never revealed he'd been moved over sexual abuse complaints. The pastor was removed from ministry in two thousand six and ultimately appeared on a list of problematic priests with credible accusations against them. The case was supposed to go to trial in LA sued. But prosecutors say the case has been resolved. Details of the terms have not been released. "So the mayor's office can help them reach an agreement, but without Eric Garcetti. He had another meeting to go to the district says it's losing up to fifteen million dollars a day because funding is tied to student attendance. And most students are not showing up KCRW reporter Jenny Hammo was in central LA this morning where teachers met with parents parents who have been complaining that they are not getting good information about what's going on both schools that she went to serve predominantly low income minority students. Hi, jenny. I'm adam. We'll tell us about them. This is San Pedro street elementary and santee education complex. Why was this meeting call today? Right. So both schools are in central LA, predominantly black and Brown. Students almost all the kids about ninety percent of the students at both San Pedro street and santee are eligible for free and reduced lunches. They have sizeable groups of English language learners at their schools. The meeting was held entirely in Spanish, they'd had a translator sitting next me. So I could hear what the teachers and parents were saying and understand them. The parents were updated on having to go. Ongoing. They were kind of instructed on how to call the district to lodge their complaints about classroom size other issues, and they were to get there to get the correct information. Right. And so have students not been going during the strike. So it's interesting. Let's let's talk about San Pedro three elementary on the first day one hundred eighty three out of seven hundred ten now on the second day of the strike. There was a big spike up to two hundred eighty kids. And it's interesting because a lot of the parents said they had gotten the message from Spanish, speaking news outlets that kids would be March thing would get in trouble. If they didn't go to school during the strike, and they're thinking that that spike on the second day reflected that I talked to a parent gelia headed I said, she was getting that kind of information from Spanish speaking in Spanish lake they'd say, it's up to the principal. The Dan again, I hear or see papers and say, no, it's not gonna affect them. So that's why I came here to this reunion to find out more about the attendance and also whether your your kids, but get in trouble if they didn't go to school. Yes. But today there was only one hundred twenty kids out of seven hundred. So would skip significant thing via let's say she said something interesting there about the message. He's getting from Spanish media. How is the message? She heard different from what English media is saying there's a general perception that English news outlets are giving correct information like one there will be a strike in that district policy. Is that students won't be more truant aren't under threat of not great you're graduating if they don't go to school during the strike. All right. So why are parents keeping their kids at home the ones who are? Well, there was one dad at the meeting told the entire group that his son has ADHD take medicine for it. And when he asked the school with anyone would be able to give his medicine during the strike, they should you know, simply. No. So he felt it wasn't safe and other points have felt the same way about safety issues. Okay. And you went to another school in west Adams and talk to parents and educators there about how the strike is affecting its students. What did you find out? I talked to a teacher named Philip Murphy his class filled with kids who have autism severe cognitive disorder. Some ten year olds in diapers or completely nonverbal reason like striking. He says he has too many of those students that you have to deal with this is what he talked about the strike. I said your kids are still going to have those excellent TA's. So if you want to send them, I'm sure they'll be safe. You know, they're not going to be abused. They're not going to be you know, just running around loose. So they'll be okay. I I will not be here working on their individualized education plans there, I p's I we won't be doing a whole lot of academic anything..

"People are assigned to the school for all the children in a supervisory role. They're not teaching them anything. Ultimately. I mean, that's that's a school of you know, by last count about seven hundred. So you know this. This woman said that she will still maybe take her kid to school and see how it works out that first day of the strike if a strike is to occur, but then kind of gauge from there, but yeah. Three people for an entire campus. What are the kids going to be doing? I mean, if we look back on previous strikes, the one in eighty nine, you know, you've got hundreds of kids that are kind of shuffled into a gym or an auditorium. And I'm not sure they watching movies. You know, I did talk to superintendent Austin Butin her yesterday. And he said there are ways to educate kids that don't rely on a physical body that you know, maybe they can use computers or ipads, or use technology is what he said. But I think you can kind of gauge the reality of what an educational experience might look like if there's a handful of staffers there for hundreds of. Kids bright high schools, you're talking about kids cutting class. Come on down. Come on. All right. So the teachers are all going to be walking the picket lines. But there will be some staffers who will have to go to schools, right, right? If you're a non UT LA number or someone who's paid hourly and are protected by the unions, like a woman, I spoke to this morning ruby Vasquez. She is paid hourly she is a special education aid in the classroom. And so by contract, she says she has to be there. But she also has two kids that attend San Pedro street elementary. So she's an interesting situation. Our contract says.
