"Now let's get into the silly season business and we're going to start with the more mundane silly season talk we'll chat about to Kati and When they're going to actually make their announcement. We thought they were going to announce their two thousand, twenty, one lineup heading into this weekend's race that might not happen, and then after that, we'll get to the really crazy stuff Um. So last week, we were talking about the possibility of Valentino Rossi tremendous announcement being right around the corner and who knows Wurley about twelve hours away as I'm recording this from press conferences in San. Marino he may have announced that deal already or who knows maybe he might have announced a shocking retirement by the time. You hear this I in which case if he has been announcement already here my reactions. Okay. So scenario number one if he announces a deal with Petronas, here's my reaction. Hey, no big deal all knew it was coming. All right now, here's case number two if he announces something other than a paternity steel or that he's retiring after the season. Holy Crap will definitely be talking about that on the next show. Okay there we go. Those are the reactions plug in the one that happened and if nothing happens well, then don't worry. We'll talk about the doctor more in a minute. But rather I wanted to start like you said a second ago with do Coty who also said that they would have their rider lineup sorted before this weekend Misano and well, Misano is here man even though there's been no official announcement and pretty much the same rumors either PETCO or Zarko to the factory team who Martine who by the way said he was ninety five percents sure that he is coming to motor GP next year but Martine getting. A maxine, and then some young Italian rider would then join the organization somewhere within their vast empire of motor GP motorcycles But whether that rider would be seen any or Marini or someone else for that matter is up in the air as is exactly where anybody will be racing outside of Jack Miller who for the first time in a long time by the way is the only writer in an organization that does know what's happening with him next year. So I'm sure the Australian bands are like breathing a sigh of relief that he's the only person not tangled up into coty drama or any kind of drama for that matter. But now it seems likely that we won't find out to Qadis true direction for at least another week there's unofficial word that they're now going to wait until. After the first Misano round to make any further twenty, twenty one announcements now that does give some more time to speculate but it also means we have to wait even longer to find out about a major chunk of the Moto g P. Greg for next season and that's really the biggest bit of unfinished silly season business outside of maybe what'll happen to Andre Ditsy Oso and dreams by the way asked about lovie in the wake of the Martine comments that he's ninety five percent sure. He's coming the motogp. Adobe would find a way to reconcile it to Kati after what happened anyway. So I don't really think that changes doe vs outlook at this point, but something else could. And that's something is a crazy rumor involving balancing. Andrea David Co so An patroness. So it's already I will say it at the beginning I'll say that the end it has already been unequivocally denied by the Petronas team by rows Lem Rizzoli himself but we're going to talk about it anyway because the delay the lack of a deal between Valentino Rossi, and Petronas. Doesn't seem like a big deal to me. But it seems like a big deal to a lot of other people as far as I'm concerned Rossi and patrols were simply waiting to make the announcement at Rossi's home track in Bassano I mean there's no particular reason to rush. You know it's like one Saturday. The other was going to go running off Lorenzo style or anything like that. But it seemed to just drive a bunch of media outlets nuts that there wasn't an announcement yet and the German site speed week no relation even though we have the same last name. They're reporting the Valentino Rossi will actually announce his retirement this week or next. Opening. The door then for Andrea debate, CEO so to take his place on the Petronas team now saw you on bat read that same article and he wondered if there was any truth to it and what it would mean. And speedway cleverly added some fuel to their own fire by also claiming that Andre the video so confirmed over the weekend that he will have a place to quote fight for the championship and of quote in Twenty Twenty one. Now. I'm not saying that they made that up. I. Don't know where they got it. They didn't say where they got it from, but I searched the internet up down left and right and I can find no confirmation. Of that quote by Andrea does. So anywhere I could also find no confirmation of the rumor as a whole. Any other place that mentioned it seemed just simply be referring to that speak article although some don't even go that far they just say it is if they came up with it out of thin air. So I wasn't really thinking there was much to this at all, and of course, since that article came out resum Rizzoli like I said a petroleum said that there has been no the links between him and Andre Zero. So for twenty twenty one, they're not pursuing him for next season..

Senna: The Early Years
"Dan Pass Gas. We're talking about the early years of Ayrton Senna. You know him as the legendary driver famous for winning multiple Formula One championships in nineteen, eighty, eight, nineteen, Ninety and nineteen ninety one he won an incredible forty one gram freeze on seventeen different tracks over the course of nine seasons. You probably also know how the story ends. At the age of thirty four while racing at the nineteen ninety four, San Marino, Grand Prix Senna crash on lap, set on leaving the track and a speed over a hundred eighty miles per hour, slammed into a concrete wall, killing him on impact. The. Final Jenny home two with L.. Tragic death cut a storied career short and much like Kurt Cobain, Heath Ledger or to park. It froze centers, accomplishments, and magnetic personality in amber. Deprived of the slow decline to any great talent at the top of their profession will eventually fall. Victim to these names are instead forever frozen their lawyers, and so they remained. Forever Young. Senator is now a legend. But where do legends begin with an origin story of course? So what senators version of being bitten by a radioactive spider, finding a weird lamp, genie or floating down the Nile in a basket made of Reeds? Well like Spiderman Aladdin or Moses Senna his monogamous, but before Senate was sent off, his last name wasn't even Senna at all. His parents worry that he was uncoordinated and even had him test report. He was born into wealth, but although wealth can definitely give you access to the world of bracing, it can't make fast and Santa wasn't just fast. He was the fastest. So what was the moment Senna truly became Senate to answer that we need to start on March twenty first nineteen sixty the day. When in Sao Paulo Brazil. Ericsson senator silver was born. Welcome to pass gas. That was a long intro. Great Man I'm. I got a little choked up there for a second. I mean this guy is so important and just such. Like I, don't know he's just a legend, and he's just like so important to so many people, and I'm really excited that we're going to die, have really deep into his life, but I mean just. A man just. I got a little teary eyed. When you're talking about the forever, young stuff is yeah I sure. Senna is a like I said an intro. He's a legend. Almost like a mythic figure at this point. Just such a hallowed name so revered in in in motor sports and the car world in general. Just like Oh yeah, you hear senators like he was I mean he was the greatest, but like it's just like an instant assumption of just like. Perfection basically right. Yeah, he's like Michael Jordan. Yeah, no thought given to, and we're going to see why that is because. There's a lot of good reason for that I. Think the moment where it hit where I was like Oh, damn was when? You when I I didn't realize he was thirty four when he died and I'm just about to turn thirty four, and so I'm like. I gotTA. Do. Joe You're the air and of automotive podcasting damage. Out Year Man. Is talking about how I am scared about dying. But what I've noticed is a lot of a lot of pieces that talk about center. Don't really dive into his early life. which is what we're going to do today? And I'm really excited about that. Hopefully will give people some insight into where this dude came from, and I, think yeah without further ado. Let's get into the life. The early life of one Ayrton Senna. Are you guys ready? I'm ready. Ready sale ever be. Ready, legit. You WanNa give. Fired up I think my new my new thing is. Fire Dub! Different words fired up. I could see that on a shirt for sure, but D. U. P. Oh, yeah, fire! Up I get a man. It's great. It's solid. C. memes are better when you explained. A Ayrton Senna Da. Silva was born in nineteen sixty in Sao. Paulo Brazil at the pro Ma tre. I'm going to by the butcher every Brazilian. Names Zillion were. Portuguese Brazilian. I'm going to butcher at all today. Just letting you know. Pro Monterey! Maternity Hospital of Santana a hospital I assumed was named after the legendary guitarist areas. Warn! Ayrton's father Milton Dasilva was a landowner and factory owner, and among other businesses Milton owned an auto parts company, and his knowledge and connections within the industry would become a key entry point for Airton into the world of racing

"It's been over twenty five years since Senna's death and there is still not a definitive judgment on exactly what happened that day in Imola but most everyone can agree that that tragic weekend was a turning point. Formula One racing. The sport was forced to take a more serious approach towards safety around on people season. The calls were really loud incredibly quick and you could really drive a wack kid and it was a lot harder for the drive. It's well to control you. Know in the headlight manual gearboxes. They I mean senator for example. He finished Monica races with a big hole in the middle of his hand from all the cages yet to the Like a thousand gearchange a massive blisters on just inside. That's not I mean. There's next you know people drivers Paul now. Basically says the real physical sport there since San Marino just one f one driver has been killed in a Grand Prix Crash Jules Bianchi died in twenty fifteen from head injuries. He suffered in an accident at the Japanese Grand Prix in two thousand fourteen. The fact that was twenty years in between Formula. One fatalities is evidence of the Sports Safety Crusade. After San Marino the Grand Prix drivers association which still remains enforced. Today was reformed on the morning of that fateful race. With a view to improving safety in f one Santa was named director along with Gerhard Berger and Michael Schumacher at what would turn out to be his last drivers briefing then in the late ninety s. A number of steps were taken to improve. The car's cockpits were lengthened and reinforce the suspension was strengthened and the wheels were attached to the car by tethers to stop them from flying off in two thousand and three ahead and next support system was introduced which is designed to protect the spine by attaching the helmet to the shoulders and in two thousand eighteen. The Halo System was introduced on Formula. One cars which protects our driver's head during a rollover and from large pieces of flying debris like wheels many race tracks were also remodeled after nineteen ninety four by German engineer. Herman Telka their wider and have bigger run off areas on the curves and many fans further away. The sport we see today is very different and as a result some would argue last exciting. The nineties were very competitive. Time that we're very exciting time. It was very tragic to lose Aaron Senate in the Mid Nineties but after that you have the rise of Michael Schumacher and Ferrari with me. Talking in sport continued to become more international and I think as more money came into the store and there was more money around the world to bring the store to more exotic places in a lot of ways. You kind of lost that that purity and it's still remained elite and it's it's still. It's still a hot ticket and a lot of places a very expensive ticket including in Montreal. But I don't think globally as the it's been able to keep hold of the footprint that had had the sports landscape overall the tracking in Imola. Italy was changed following the death. Severinsen Berger and Senna and then in two thousand and six San Marino was dropped from Grand Prix schedule altogether in recent years though there have been talks about bringing formula went back to the race track as statue of Ayrton. Senna was erected in a park across from the corner where he died and fans still pin flowers and handwritten notes to offense nearby. Senna's memory is alive in many other ways as well. The Internet for one has allowed young fans who weren't even born when he was racing to watch the old races that made him a legend. A wide variety of books and films have also been made about Senate including Popular Twenty ten documentary which includes home movies and photographs from the driver's family and friends. It's an excellent behind the scenes. Look at his life and if you haven't seen it I highly recommend you check it out to this day. Said his favorite soccer team still honors him by chanting his last name before matches schools in Brazil teach students about his life and racing career and even local airlines have painted fleets of jets in the famous yellow and green colors of Senna's iconic racing helmet after Senna's death. His family set up the Ayrton Senna Institute a nonprofit organization that helps educate Brazilian children. The organization is run by sister. Vivian and it's helped. Millions of kids with money raised from licencing sense image and from the production of a comic book series based on the driver called Sina or little center. And we can't forget about Roland ratzenberger. A man whose death was overshadowed by a racing legend Ratzenberger was buried in his home country of Austria and inscription on his gravestone reads. He lived for his dream a miniature race car and a Helmet Razon on top. Ratzenberger's parents moved into their son's apartment in Salzburg Austria after the accident as a way of ensuring that his memory was not forgotten. The home was littered with racing trophies and pictures of their ever smiling sun on the fireplace mantle. His father Rudolph has no bitterness towards the sport. He says he's just happy. That Roland achieved his dream to be a formula one driver..

"The San Marino Grand Prix race started under a dark cloud a massive start line pile up saw a wheel fly into the crowd and several spectators and the grandstand were injured. It was as if this weekend was cursed and sadly the worst was yet to come the race restarted and ran under a yellow flag with Santa leading the pack for four laps behind the slow moving safety car. When the cars were finally released Senate continued to lead ahead of Schumacher and Gerhard Berger then on lap seven the second lap at racing speed Senate entered the tamburello corner. This was a renowned part of the track that had seen many crashes in the past the corner was very bumpy and had dangerously little room between the track and a concrete wall which protects the center. No River that runs behind it. As Senate went into the Timber Elo. His Williams race car suddenly veered off course and slammed into the wall. He entered the corner at one hundred ninety two miles per hour and then breaks hard downshifting twice to slow down before impacting the wall at one hundred and thirty one miles per hour. Goodness gracious punt. Open the center has join chanted. You can see Know whether it was a little reverse billion com horrified fans watched as Senate remained lifeless in the cockpit of his car course officials stood by waiting for medical personnel to arrive. It felt like time stood still though it seemed excruciatingly slow medical aid. Was there in about sixty seconds. Rescuers struggled for two minutes as they attempted to remove Santa from the car finally he was freed and he was laid on the ground. F One race Dr Syd. Watkins was at aside Watkins who was also a close personal friend said as soon as he saw Senate he knew. The injury was fatal. A suspension part had pierced Senna's helmet. He was likely killed.

"At righty on Fangio and Mawson and then it was both glamorous and dangerous in the early days of the F one World Championship. Death was almost a regular occurrence between nineteen fifty two and nineteen sixty. Two twenty. Three drivers were killed in accidents. The drivers lives were on the line at every race. It's believed because of the high death rate there was a very unique camaraderie among drivers in this golden era of F. One driver from the fifties said the fear of death made them have a better appreciation of life and it led to many lasting friendships up and down the grid by the nineteen eighties and nineties. Formula One racing had changed dramatically fatalities. Were no longer common things to safety standards that were developed does. The sport grew in fact leading into the deadly weekend in Nineteen ninety-four the last time an f one driver had died during a race was twelve years earlier in Nineteen eighty-two Ricardo Poletti was killed at the Canadian Grand Prix and Montreal in a horrible accident on the starting grid that was also when they renamed the Montreal track to Siquijor Yield Villneuve. They'll move is a Canadian racing icon. He died in May of that year during qualifying in Zolder Belgium and the Montreal track just an hour away from where he was born was where he won his first f one race in the nineties. You might remember that. The VILLNEUVE name came back in the spotlight as his son. Jacques won the indy. Five hundred in nineteen ninety-five then made the jump to f one in ninety six and won the title in ninety seven another thing that a changed by the eighties and nineties was camaraderie among drivers. Thanks in part to one of the greatest rivalries of all time in sports there have been many legendary rivalries just think Ali versus Frazier McEnroe versus Borg or Magic Johnson versus Larry Bird but few can compare to the battle between Ayrton Senna and Elaine. Prost rivalry between the two of them is one of the best. Sports rivalries across the board let alone in front of the one. That's Brendan Dunlop. Sports broadcaster and Lifelong F. One Fan he says. The two drivers were polar opposites in many ways. A lot of it is that aired incentives so comfortable in his own skin. He was supremely confident. he'd really didn't care what other people thought. Olympics wasn't as Secure in his in his own skin and I think that that played into his actions a lot into his rivalry and his relationship with whether the obviously from a competitive standpoint. They both wanted to win. They both want to be the best. And I think that's Alain Prost could see that. Senator was a little bit better. A lot of people's eyes is one of the best race car drivers of all time so I think impressed Wanted wanted that pedestal. Senate came around and pros can have that PROS DOT COM FORMULA. One in the early eighties and the curly haired. Frenchman took his first championship in nineteen eighty five and then again in eighty six go both while driving for McLaren. Prost was popularly known as the professor because of his scientific and methodical approach to racing he perfected an economic style. He started a race conservatively. Took it easy on the brakes and tires and then made a late race challenge. If pros needed to finish shape six than a race to maintain his championship lead. He would sit in sixth place holding that position instead of pushing for a win and risk losing at all then there was senna. He turned F. One into a contact sport. He put everything on the line. Each time he raised. Senator went flat out all the time. Not even the rain would slow down. Say He's the one guy for it. You give him a shopping. Just drop the wheels off air. That's Ibar Malik. Author of the book. Nineteen Ninety four the untold story of a tragic and controversial F one season he says Senate was thrilling to watch. There's lots of senator fans out there. Because he's scared. Say obvious you watch any video of him and you really see him like Manhattan in the car and spots the flying and Senate was also straight out of Hollywood central casting. The handsome young Brazilian was often photographed with beautiful models and actors waterskiing or racing around town on a motorcycle. He grew up in Brazil the privileged son of a wealthy businessman and in the largest country in South America. He was basically God not just for his racing skills. Though also because of his deep commitment to giving back to a country struck by poverty and unrest Senate was different from most other racers. He was deeply religious and he spoke in a way that fans weren't used to in one thousand nine hundred eighty eight he qualified in pole position at Monaco. Enduring the qualifying lap. He famously said he no longer felt in control of the car. In the normal way instead he felt like he was in a different dimension. Finish that race but later that year as he captured his first world title. Santa said that he saw the face of God as he crossed the finish line in Japan. The spiritual aspect of Senate seemed in stark contrast. With this single-minded determination he had towards winning. But that was sent a man of contrast a ruthless racer. Anna Gentlemen ferociously ambitious and deeply caring at that time. A lot of people didn't view race car drivers as athletes. I'm sure there are some who still don't but Brendan Dunlop. Says Senate played a big part in changing that he had a diet? Athletes have at that time removed red meat from his diet and he trained relentlessly in the off season stories about his vacations. They had this beautiful beach ouston that he would spend months at that and the the off season where so much longer than they are now and he would be running twenty kilometers four or five times a week in the off season throughout the entire break just to be physically fit and ready for the season as possible and tell us partner success and I do think really was the trend setter that made the outside world understanding believe that race car drivers were actually athletes and I know that a lot of race car drivers that follow us him as the ultimate example of how the dedication hard work and the commitment. There's so much more of it off. The track than there is on the track. Senna and Prost became McLaren teammates in nineteen eighty eight McLaren dominated in the late eighties and initially the pair had a mutual admiration for each other at the end of the first season together. Senna beat Prost by three points to win the world championship ending any warm feelings between the two on the track. Things came to a head in October. Nineteen eighty nine at the Japanese Grand Prix. This race would become one of the most notorious in f one history. It was the climax of prosed and Senna's tumultuous two year rivalry as teammates McLaren through a stop beyond his car is the red and white McLaren lawn. Cross two men who do not like each other at all but the only two men with shot at the nineteen eighty nine Formula One world championship Senate needed to finish ahead of Prost in the race to win the championship with just six laps. Left in the race prost was leading senna but then in a desperate move Senate tried to dive passed. Prost at a tight chicane. Then they locked wheels and both cars left. The track.
Map Quests: Political, Physical and Digital
"GonNa talk about actually of your favorite graphical oddities and that's ex- claves and enclaves and these are bits of land cut off from their home countries in various cool ways. Yeah and they take a lot of forms and it gets complicated pretty fast so I just wanted to start with something simple. You know listeners out there might recognize when you look at a map of the United States. There's this little bump up in the middle and it's called the northwest angle and it sticks up from Minnesota into Canada. Okay I know that one. It's basically how like non MINNESOTANS NOWHERE. Minnesota's like does it from the other. The other states up there is going to break this like clean straight. Canadian border running along the Western. Us and then when it hits the Great Lakes this bomb exactly so like on the left. It's all kind of a straight line and on the right it starts getting zigzagging and it has a really Kinda neat origin story. But I'm not going to go there today and Suffice it to say heart graphical errors were made and for me growing up in Minnesota. I actually always tended to picture this notch as a piece of land like a solid. Because you know it's like part of the shape of the map Marin right but it's actually not or at least not entirely so. The southern portion of the angle is water and above that there is a patch of land. And that's what's known as a practical exclave a practical exclave so into the basics of excavation enclaves these are areas in the isolated or separated in some way from the rest of the country but what is a practical exclave mean like in this case basically the land in the angle is surrounded by Canadian land on most sides blow. It has this area of American territorial water. Which is you know basically a really big lake so practically speaking someone who wants to go directly there without leaving the US they could do it by boat but on land. They'd actually have to drive through Canada to get back into the slice of America which isn't impossible. It's just impractical. Okay that sense. This actually reminds me of point Roberts which we actually sent to do ago where he was you know went to the post office that people go to and on. Point Roberts. That's that's pretty cool. Yeah and it's totally in that. Same category of Exclave Point Roberts. Though in the details are really different. The angle is huge. It's much bigger. It's relatively remote and it's really sparsely populated by comparison so it only has around a hundred permanent residents or so and the crossing stations are correspondingly pretty minimalist. So what does it take to cross the border at the Northwest Angle? For a long time you had these little shack. Like buildings called outlying area reporting stations or or is a video call with border. Yes you basically skype into the border patrol. They kind of you know looking over you. Show your passport and you're on your way. It wouldn't be practical staff. Yeah Yeah and then. I've been reading about this because I haven't been up there in a while and apparently over the last few years they've been working on streamlining things with the mobile APP. Called Rome Spelled R. O. Am The way that you can check in without really going through all these hoops. That's that's so your point Roberts you have the Northwest Angle You know these are fairly regional example. The people that live there interact with them but most people don't interact with them. Are there ones that have like bigger impacts on the world in general? Yeah I mean there's ones that people never really think about and a really good example is the whole state of Alaska so Alaska is considered to be what's called a semi exclave and it's actually the largest of its kind in the world and it's got this semi modifier because even though it doesn't border the lower forty-eight it does have this really long stretch of international coastline so it really has direct access to international waters right so those are X. Claims. I think those are pretty easy to understand so describe what enclaves are because those can be pretty strange the really can and I. I should note here that there are some nuances. How this a lot of complexity like some enclaves are also exclave but like in the simplest and most general terms enclaves are countries or parts of countries that are entirely contained within another countries territories. They're totally surrounded. So North West Bengal in point Roberts and Alaska. They don't count because they are cut off completely from the. Us You can still get these places by boat. For example yeah exactly whereas enclaves are fully enclosed so San Marino in Europe is a classic example. It's this relatively small country and it's completely enclaved on all sides by Italy. I mean maybe it's because the. Us is so isolated and on its own and surrounded by water that that feels weird to me to be enclosed in another country. And he may be if. You're like the Czech Republic. You're surrounded by the country's de Luxembourg one country. It's pretty small but there's still something special about being a country completely inside one other countries. Yeah Yeah Yeah. You're dependent on them in. Yeah and certain curious ways And that sort of just the first level of this to these things get even more complex and even more small and a lot of cases For example with counter enclaves which are an enclave in another clave or more specifically like a piece of the Netherlands inside a piece of Belgium that Zits self in the Netherlands like second-class enclaves in Anglaise glaze. All the way down all the way down and his crazy as those are. It doesn't stop there. Consider counter counter enclaves like a piece of India inside a piece of Bangladesh inside a piece of India inside of Bangladesh and in fact that triple enclave example is the only known third order enclave in world history. Yeah well that makes sense that it'd be so absurd. It's pretty I mean it's it's pretty hard to pictures. How does that even work in the real world so basically for a long time? They were villages within villages and at the middle of it. All was this two Acre parcel that was owned by Bangladeshi farmer who lived in the surrounding enclave and he would just wake up in the morning crossing India to farm his tiny Land in the middle of the zone and then he would cross back into Bangladeshi. Tonight in two thousand fifteen India in Bangladesh finally agreed to this really big cross-border land swap to essentially tidy up all these enclaves within enclaves and essentially they ended up handing over dozens of enclaves to each other totaling thousands of acres. Does that mean that? They're like Indians now living in Bangladesh and vice versa. I mean yes in some cases and I actually thought they handled it pretty well and pragmatically. They basically offered residents of these former enclaves choice. "Like control you or somebody on i don't know if he will not is i mean in all those meetings that we had with with the technical algorithm people as well as um i don't know i mean we met with so many people when we i made the rounds that day in san marino but it was trying to figure out look what contributed to the success story you know they were they were analyzing in in in trying to read the tea leaves of their own algorithm figure it out so it certainly is they're certainly wasn't one team that we met with that was like yeah we did it 'cause i it it i mean they're very you know i don't get me wrong i'm not here to tell the life for anybody but that's honestly the impression i got when we went up there it was like hey check out they did a presentation check out this amazing success of government good morning in terms of watch time like i you know in in it and then they were trying to we're trying to figure it out in the room i find it interesting that you guys were looking outward said the unlike hair shows great of course was if that one of these little just never been an audible so for for me the analogy i like to think of is is like a is like an ecosystem right and you've got in ecosystem is constantly trying to reach equilibrium just you know you've got an island has got different animals in those animals represent different channels writing and it's being but you've got humans come in and they tinker with the ecosystem because they have the power to do that and they make these little changes in they don't realize that all will if all of a sudden we you know.
