"I guess is Anthony so Marco we're talking sons of Italy all things talion during this October Italian American month, and we're celebrating the sons of Italy book as well it Anthony has done. Anthony. Are you ready to talk to Barbara in Weymouth low bobber, Barbara Hello, Anthony? It's so wonderful to have an opportunity to ask you a question. I turned in late and tuned in late. So I don't know it's just touched on that. My grandmother who lived in Brooklyn with Irish Catholic and she used to go to Saint Leonard because she belonged to a group called the Serta order or Saint Francis. Which was based there at point in back when she died she was buried some agents, which exist anymore in Brookline. She used to go to say Leonard. I don't believe every week because she was so involved in this group, and I really don't know much about the group. And I don't know. Whether you're familiar with it reason it said exists today. I know it existed in the twenties and thirties and forties because she died in the late forties. But if you know anything about that, I'd really appreciate knowing one of the things about Saint Leonard's, it it is one of the oldest Italian American Roman Catholic churches in New England when it was established in the eighteen seventies say Lennon's of port Maurizio, which is the actual name was a major church, then they built this wonderful building. That actually is something in a lotta ways that still exists recently been restored. My grandparents married there. But by great grandparents that make great great grandparents were all members of Saint Leonard's. So it wasn't just the fact that it was an Italian American church, but they had a wonderful grouping of different things that they actually were part of because of Kennedy was under the archdiocese of Boston. I think this was a lay group of people that actually belongs to that organization that in some ways met at Saint Leonard's because the preponderance was most of them lived in downtown Boston. I don't think it had anything to do per se with the Italian American community. But it was probably something that was a a lay aspect to Saint Francis. So I'm not sure about it at its aspect. But I think in a lot of ways that might be something that I'll do a little bit of research a few do Facebook, please send me your Email, and I'll do as much research as I can find out that info. That would be wonderful. I really appreciate that simply because at I said, I've never known much about it and listening to tonight, I thought well, this is the time to us. So I will Email you when or messenger, you Email you so. How did she get in Facebook? Did she come into town on the Charlie to the north end? And I would I would assume she lived on beacon street. I would. So I would assume she took literally I don't know what happened. But let me know because I think that's one of the fun things that we begin to realize. I mean, it's not just the fact of the sons of Italy, and of course, eight Lennon's, but I think we have to realize the subways the fabric. Life is connected in many different ways. Whether it's Roman Catholic arts charitable organizations of the sons of Italy is supported over the century. It's an important feature to realize that touches upon all of our lives. So thank you for that. It might have had something to do with our son, my uncle because he had. Specific problems grandmother, very religious. Thank you very much buyer. I need to get in Mary before the break. But thank you very much. Thank you. You're very welcome. And now we have Mary in Braintree. Hello. Hey, bradley. Hey, Anthony, how you doing tonight? Yes, we are. Well, thank you. Said Bradley, if it's okay, I did my usual thing where I right up the questions, and I leave it up to you to answer. Whatever you want to answer. Okay. I'll read out the questions. And you can answer. What wait four in a row is a lot to remember like the first question. So that let's do one at a time. But that's the thing that you can take notes or something and then just after one or two or non or whatever. All right. We'll do the best. We can go ahead. Okay. Thanks question is what are the top three things you most about being Italian? Question two is what are the three most common mistakes non Italian people make about being Italian? Number three is what are your top three favorite most beautiful towns or cities and Italy where you recommend people to go visit or list and the last question is what are your top three favorite Scorsese films? And that's that's like twelve questions. All right. I'll take number three when we go to Italy, which we usually do every fall. But this year, we couldn't go because the health reasons, but we go to Italy. I think one of the things is, of course, the eternal city is Rome. I love Rome, and we stay at the same hotel, which is the hotel form it's directly opposite the forum. And basically, it's the most wonderful place and the restaurants are great. But I think one of the concepts is though, I enjoyed venison. I enjoy Florence and I enjoy Naples one of the things we like to do is. We rent a villa in San Fernando Valley. L to Camino which is about one hundred and twenty five miles south west of southeast of Rome. And we stay there at least a week, and I always think sometimes visiting the countryside of Italy is the most wonderful thing. So granted urban cities of really lovely and things of that sort, but I really like to see the countryside. How people really live how they live eat drink. And of course, enjoy and socialize with one another. I think in some ways a very proud to be an Italian American. I'm only half. I think in some ways I've looked at my family in subways. And I've said what have we done to contribute back to you to the fabric of society of Boston. I think we've done a lot. I've written a lot of history books. They don't just touch upon my family's history. But they touch upon everything of Boston's history from the period of sixty thirty to the present. So when I think about the evolution of the city's history begin to realize that I'm only one of those spokes in the wheel and one of thousands of people and a lot of ways that either have enough Nick religious or racial background that in some ways has now melted into what we call a Boston. Ian, I think in some ways I'm very proud of being that. But it's also the fact of what else can I do to make it better. So that each one of us feel as though we're part of that fabric of society. These films. I don't know. But it's funded subways to think what what are we who are we we're of we come from. That's what I'm always trying to do as a historian. So I think sometimes the sons of Italy book is a great example of that for a century. What what it's done. Do you consciously try to keep the Italian in you alive? Keep the talionis in u up front. I don't really necessarily think of myself as anything of myself. I mean, it's only a fabric of who. I am. I also have white hair as a lot. But I think one self identify what I try to do sometimes is to reconnect with things that were fond memories from the past. And I think I mentioned to you earlier. My grandmother did make pasta one of your earlier callers talked about doing the pasta had he is grabble put it on wax paper of the bed. My grandma put another clean sheet. But the other thing was to my grandmother also made something that I sometimes make on occasion, which meatballs. Everyone knows what a Meatball is. But I don't think anybody really realize sometimes what they were. And my grandmother made them with raisins and pin? Yeah. I wanna do that and a need they were rich media beautiful. But it was so odd when I was a child that I thought this is really peculiar. But I think sometimes October wasn't just Italian American. That was also the fact that four of us in the family all share the same month for birthdays. And because my cousin Joe Allio actually had a bakery called LA Contessa, which was in Davis square, each one of us had an Italian rum cake. And by this one a week baselessly unbelievable by the time October thirty first came. It was my cousin's cheryl's birthday at the end of the month. We were so sick of rum cake. That by the time the next birthday, which was the end of November. At least they might have been something different. I think it's interesting to note interesting to know that your name is San Marco to which really breaks down to San Marco or Saint marks as in Saint marks place. Ironically, the name was San Marco. And I never knew that until basically by ladder teens, I found out that when my grandparents were married at Saint Leonard's in one thousand nine hundred twenty one that their name was actually rose genetically and Luigi San Marco, am I grandfather in subways had a son, and he was baptized Antonio San Marco in nineteen twenty two. So the thing is I did further research not turned out that on all of the immigration papers. The name was San Marco, which means Saint Marco two separate, right? But in the period of the nineteen twenties. Unfortunately, many people don't realize subways families evolve. My grandfather who was an upstanding, man. In a lotta ways had a brother. Who was a social activist and his brother Joseph genetically actually killed a policeman. And it was devastating for the family. I never knew this until I was in my late teens, but when I've done research subsequently, I found out that my grandfather changed the spelling of the name from San Marco to disassociate himself from his social Atticus brother who was in prison for almost forty years. But it was also the fact that the day became Sam Arca with two M'S well, subsequently by great uncle changed his name spelling to sabotage as well. So I think in some ways it's part of a family lore family history. One of the granddaughters of my great uncles marriage. From the first marriage has sent me a lot of things Denise golden, and she says box loads of all sorts of research that she's done on this man, though, I didn't really know. Him when I was raised. I think in some ways he must've been a person who made a mistake, but it was also part of the family history. Now that the name Jj a right more in a moment. We want to invite you to call us at six point seven two five four ten thirty. There's no one on hold. You'll be first right after this break come WBZ talking..

"How are you oh you certainly sound well it's nice to have an opportunity stick to san marco again i don't know if you've actually covered this previously but if she did i certainly wasn't aware of that my understanding is that boston harbor originally came up as far as what way newish jordan marsha macy's and that whole area including chinatown was actually tired of the harbor so my first question is is that true my second question is how safe is the property goes down there and i don't think i have a question well good to hear from you i think a lot of times when we think of boston have to realize balls to was an eight hundred acre peninsula connected to the mainland at the neck now the next started roughly which is basically a boylston street and trombone straight and narrow as it went through the area water was something that surrounded the entire city and though jordan marsh and filene's has called downtown crossing today the water never really came to about that point it did come to about pearl street would it be three blocks just east of that so during the nineteenth century boston's topographical changes took place you saw the cutting down of beacon hill the soil was used to not only create parts of north station and causeway street but also the.

"This movie ed sarah rock rolling made like a handful of news at that point this was like ninety ninety ninety nine or two thousand and um i never forgot the he's so proud of his son it doesn't bother me at all that's how this goes like of course you're not going to agree with everything i say i think sanhua ball is fine in this movie that is the worst category and i wish him well i i i don't i i'd so don't care who wins supporting actor with all due respect all five very fine nominee and also hammer a does it bother me at all i really i really view yep it doesn't it doesn't bother i think it's graham i mean i i'm i wanna see send rooting for san marco but as a as a career as a as an actor i'm really fond of him it's time new method influence now i it it's fine and you i i the problem's not him the problem for me it's it's just it's a bad nubia agree with leslie my central frustration with the arguments over the film have have been that for for those of us who hadn't been fond of it we've sort have been written off as just just raising political or social objections but this at a level of form i don't care about this movie if it were better moody formally that you're still thorny and i were still battling against it i would i would still say that there were problems but but i would i would attribute them to taking on a difficult question and the difficulty of taking on its ipo question and taking it seriously and i just don't think that this movie is worth that conversation which is why i'm frustrated that like everyone everyone in my life to argue about this movie no matter what side earn because i'm just like i really i wish i could quit this meeting you know i this is i mean again this is i mean comparing it to crash has a really great idea because crash.
