And i've seen it a few times a so much fun to watch it. He has a hard o'clock alive and he wouldn't. He wouldn't quit. Which is awesome to see. It's tyler young to getting a fan favorite vote in going in there in pushing his heart as he did. You know it's it's i think clash kinda showcase some other people that we didn't really think about going. Yeah that that's kind of beauty of all of this especially with the qualifiers because there's people anyone can sign up for this. there's no prerequisite for. Hey if you're making a clash you have to do this or to sign up to do qualifier. You had seles. No you can just go sign up compete and if you get top three depending on the amount of people that are there you go. Yeah so where to go. So we're we're we're two qualifiers already. Obviously one waco This one race. Just in colorado. Who were the who were the top three of for colorado this week Anthony san lorenzo won the whole thing. darren time as second and then jordan donaldson came in third. And what's interesting is every one that's qualified so far was at the last clash. Everyone that's made it now. People will realize how awesome it is. We're putting our diamond effort to make sure we get back yet. It could be exciting to see. What the next tacoma. A tyler's hosted the one in january. I've actually volunteered. I'll be there helping out with that show in tennessee. And then johnny has one. In probably february. I guess maybe in jersey Cisco and geiger known geiger. Just call back. it's time yup. With this too there was one in and texas at a one in colorado so that east coast is of the east coast. Guys traveled to those or are they kinda stayed home be think in all their marbles into one of these two. I'm not sure something. I've been thinking about those anyone that spoke anyone that's thinking. They needed extra over the top prepare. So is everyone else you know i. I was thinking that since. I did so good at waco artists chances to win some money. You know if. I could just keep getting better at doing the same show over and over. It wouldn't be as hard on me but then with my back hurting everything. It just didn't work out with absolute that was originally my plan. Now i think that everyone. That's waiting so long. you know. That didn't jump on either waco didn't just show up to waco like they're going to In colorado colorado is amazing. Show it's gonna be extremely hard competition. I think it's the stakes are so much higher. You have two chances all you got. You got two chances again in the clash and then that's it if it was mailing i would have went to the first one. If i get my spot i would go to the sexual and go to one and i would try because he said this to save the same. Show your training before. I would be a little bit leery just to wait. "Before things got big. This was in the in the early eighties. Eighty five and i also notice that when we got to this apartment like i was obsessed with turning over forks and looking at tablecloths and everything in the house was made in italy and i was like wow this country sustains itself because backing connecticut everything was getting huge supermarkets and this little downtown that we had with a butcher shop in a fish market and everything was all closing down and and then i had this one memory of it's called the night of san lorenzo when there's a lot of shooting stars so we went up into the hills you could see the the adriatic coast and then we just sat there in. The sky was so clear and they were shooting stars everywhere. And i just said i wish i could live here someday. I was. I was totally hooked. I was thinking. Why did my grandparents leaves paradise. Yeah so that trip clearly had a huge impact on you And i guess when you went to college went to connecticut college i went to connecticut. College wanted to stay close to home. Because i didn't know if my father was gonna be alive or not. So that's where that's where in in your dad. Your dad passed away pretty soon after that trip. He did a couple of days before actually started college. Well and it got to the point where you had to decide your major so i was looking through the book and i said let me look in italian and it said if you majored in italian and you have financial aid. You have to spend a year abroad in italy and the program covers like your -partment which is stepping mouse mats me. That's me a half to go. It's calling me. So you end up spending your junior year abroad in italy and that year would be like chains rest of your life because year you met the man who would eventually become your husband and business partner rodolfo. How did you guys. how did you meet. yeah he. He was a friend of one of these distant relatives that i had that lived in modena. And he said oh. Let's my mother said. I should come and pick you up and take you to her house so you can say hi to her so we went to his house and been had just pulled up because his best friend live next door wasn't your husband. Yes he was gone as soon as i saw. I was like if. I'm pretty enough for you. You're my man. i just knew it. he was just. I don't know it just had this feeling and you hit it off right away. We were just friends. I mean we would. I would go in italy. When you're that when you're that age you have like this group of friends. And they all go out together. So on friday or saturday nights they would say. Hey do you wanna come to modern. Go out with us so the girls would sit on one side of the table. The guys would sit on the other and they would just talk all night long and i was. I'd get bored. You know they were talking about things like oh. Have you ever heard of like band row. They have these roll ons now. That work as the and i was like. Oh my god but They would always sit next to him because he didn't have a girlfriend. Was he a student. He actually had just finished military service and he had previously studied agriculture in bologna but his family had had some financial hardships so he had to go to work. So i guess youtube start dating and as a certain point you go back to the us to finish college. But then you return to italy in yoon rafa moving together right. yes and what. What were you both doing. He was working as agricultural company. And i had my first and only job as a translator but after a couple of months i got yelled at because i translated stainless steel to inox sizable stealing. It was an important company to those important. You know customer so the man who ran the place took me in his office and just yelled. I'm in. I just looked at me said i quit. You know so i. I've only had one job in my life and it was like two months and we were already having a hard time making ends meet. because in italy pe- people don't really make a lot of money in fear. Parents don't have something. It's almost impossible to get ahead and i didn't wanna be like my parents always worrying about money. I wanted to have a family. I wanted to. I wanted to do things. So i was very motivated to to get ahead. You wanted to start a business. I did and so i convinced my husband to go to the united states because one day i was like kind you can open up businesses states for like two hundred dollars and he said okay. Well so you convinced him and by the way to speak any english now. He studied german school so he knew no english. You convince him rodolfo. You convince them to go to the us and you're not married at this point right now but we did have to get married for him to get it. I got you just like he called. My my cousin was like a justice of the peace and we signed the papers. That was you get married to come back to the us and now what was the idea. What was the business you. we're gonna do. The first business idea was to move to miami and open up dna hut at the beach. So paige dina is like the flat bread that they make on the adriatic coast and they have these striped huts. And you just stuff them with pursued or ci user greens or tomatoes and that was our idea so we drove to southern florida and we actually stayed in a campground in a tent and it was very frustrating. Because nobody was going to give you the permit to open up in a hut in miami beach and so one night. I went to bed and i left my sneakers tent and when i woke up in the morning i put them on with no socks and there were these little teeny fire ants inside the sneakers and my feet and it was so painful. I looked at my husband. I started to cry. And i said let's go back to connecticut. I can't take it anymore. All right and you go back to connecticut. Did you go back to new london where he grew up. We love of my parents. I didn't have any with my mother. I didn't have any money so we were in the kitchen brainstorming and my brother and his friend were there. And i said we're going to open a fresh pasta shop with lake prepared sauces in the first town called mystic connecticut. And they were like you'll never make it. You need to make sandwiches and grinders and things like that so connecticut. Yeah so i was like all right all right so we found this man who made this really good italian bread. It was like twenty minutes away and so we would go. We would leave our house. Alight five in the morning. Pick up the whole load of bread. And and then i would weave in some italian thing soleil made. I made spinach pie. And we found an empty store and it was only five hundred dollars a month. We couldn't really afford a or anything. So i actually painted the windows backwards in red paint and this was. This was in like the late eighties. Right get was ninety one. Oh wow so if. I have my cinematic history correct. This is after mystic pizza. The movie came out probably. We didn't get many tourists though. It was premature local spy. And we also. My brother had loaned us five thousand dollars and we took fifteen hundred of that and bought this old famer cappuccino machine so we were the first people in town have cappuccino machine and.

"On Thursday, NASA landed its rover perseverance on Mars on the jet zero crater. Yesterday, they're released video from the Rovers Descent. Here's how it sounded from Mission control. When that happened last week, we're starting this straighten up and fly right maneuver where the spacecraft will jettison the entry balance masses in preparation for parachute deploy and to roll over to give the radar a better look at the ground. You can see the rovers parachute expanding as the craft decelerates. Al Chin is part of the perseverance mission and explained just how much power was behind that dissent gets launched out of the spacecraft with a mortar, which is basically a cannon with the muzzle velocity and run 100 miles an hour. And the spacecraft itself was going about 1000 miles an hour. This point going about 1.75 times. The speed of sound, so gentle landing was not guaranteed. As the rover rocketed toward the dull pink pockmarked surface of Mars. NASA staffers held their breath a flurry of dust as it got closer. And then success touchdown confirmed that it is carefully on the surface of Mars ready to begin speaking the sands of past life. Such a cool moment, There are six small cameras on the rover. One shows perseverance rolling through Mars is rocky terrain. It's located high on the rovers mast. It also helps with driving, and there are two microphones on the spacecraft, so there's just a bit of audio. Which is awesome. It sounds like the heartbeat of Mars. Yeah, And next comes the effort to find signs of past life. The mission for perseverance will persevere. For about 687 Earth days.

"Afternoon. Wind advisory tonight from seven until tomorrow plan on rain today highs in the forties to the mid fifties. The rain, especially this afternoon, gusty winds up to 30 MPH in the Bay Area. Flash flood watch also in effect for the Sacramento Valley. Look for mostly cloudy skies and rain showers beginning late this afternoon. This is forum. I mean, Achim. Santa Cruz County ordered the evacuation of nearly 5000 residents yesterday ahead of torrential storms, expected to hit the Bay Area and central coast later today has storm that battered Southern California Monday closed the grapevine in a major vaccination side in San Diego. The rain and snow this week will boost the state's water supply. Forecasters worried the weather system, known as an atmospheric river will unleash flooding and mudslides and areas recently burned by wildfires. Joining me now is Paul Rodgers. Natural Resource is an environment writer for the San Jose Mercury News. Thanks for joining us, Paul Morning. And of course you're joining us from Santa Cruz County. It was that terrible sees Ew, Lightning complex fire that burned the area last fall first. Can you just give us an update on the evacuation situation there? Yeah. Aziz you mentioned yesterday, Authorities in the San Lorenzo Valley basically caliph Iran. The sheriff's office ordered about 5000 people evacuated from the area because they're worried about mudslides. It's gonna be a lot of rain that's coming in. It's going to start. You know, this afternoon basically in the North Bay, it'll start to come down. It won't be that heavy. At first. It'll move south through the rest of the bear in the South Bay, and what they're worried about is after midnight. Very, very heavy sort of torrential downpours between kind of midnight and sunrise and with all of those burned areas in the Santa Cruz Mountains on also other places like Monterey County, parts of the North Bay, even the East Bay Hills. Where the stu Fire was. There are concerns about about mudslides. But they're particularly concerned about the Santa Cruz Mountains because of the steepness and how many people live in sort of danger. Basically, And our people heating the evacuation warnings. I mean, we remember, of course three years ago in Montecito near Santa Barbara, the mudslide there after the Thomas fire that killed Some 23 people destroyed. Dozens of homes on Santa Cruz County, of course, has had its own tragedy. Yeah. Sometimes these storms, uh and and most lights can be deadlier than the fires that preceded them. The tragedy that your mention in Santa Cruz County occurred in 1982 in January near Ben Loman at a place called Love Creek. There were very heavy rainstorms. In the middle of the night, A big chunk of hillside came down several 1000 ft wide, destroyed 30 houses and killed 10 people. So much material came down in that event that They were never able to find everybody. And there are still four people who are buried up there, including including two Children who are asleep in their house, and it just came down in the middle of the night. So AH, lot of longtime residents in the Santa Cruz mountains know about these events. There's it looks like heating the eating the coals of authorities, and they're packing up. "He's the lead impeachment manager and behind him or the eight other impeachment managers. So this includes the some members of the House Judiciary Committee, for example. It's a larger team than the one we saw last year. That was a seven member team that was led by Adam Schiff of California. And why is that? Why enlarge the team? This seat This time? You think this is the decision that it's left up to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi? And she decided she wanted Raskin in that top seat. This time, he is a constitutional expert. He understands these arguments of whether a president can be convicted after they leave office. And so he's an expert in this area as well as these other house members. Also happened to play a key role in last year's impeachment, but they were not managers. So we're seeing them actually play the role of managers this time around, and it's a very diverse group as well and that was a priority for Pelosi as well. Correct. I'm also as I'm watching this procession reminded about how long the Capitol Building is, If you actually just want to walk from the house side to the Senate side, But I suppose that just as to the ceremonial nature of this whole procession Scott Detroit didn't mean it in a wrap. Sorry about that. But can we go ahead and recap? What has President been? Biden been saying he's trying to keep the impeachment sort of out of front and center stage? But he knows it's inevitable. It's going to be happening. Yeah. President Biden has again repeatedly condemned what happened on January, 6 repeatedly condemned President Trump's role in that condemned many aspects of the Trump presidency. But every time he had been asked about the House impeachment vote, he, he said, some version of well that's up to members of Congress. At one point, vice president Kamila Harris said, Well, that's something for Congress to decide which was notable because at the time she gave that interview she was still a sitting member of Congress. She had not resigned her seat yet. White House really wants to focus on its own agenda that is going to be tough. What one moment that that was interesting was when Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer, we're going back and forth about whether or not there would be any delay. Biden and one of his rare statements on this actually answered a question at a press conference, saying that he preferred what McConnell was proposing over Schumer. Because that would give the Senate two weeks to vote on his Cabinet and and possibly take up this $1.9 trillion stimulus plan that Biden has repeatedly pushing to members of Congress to vote on. Okay, And now we're seeing a shot of the Senate chamber. It looks like the impeachment managers are entering. The Bonfire of the Vanities - February 7, 1497
"Day was February seventh. Fourteen ninety seven followers of the Dominican Friar Prior Girolamo Savonarola burned objects that were considered vanities like books artwork and instruments. Though this event is known as the bonfire fire of vanities the term generally refers to burning objects that religious authorities believe incite people to send Savannah Rola became a Dominican. Monk in fourteen seventy five in the following years he began teaching novices and lecturing on philosophy and he studied with various lecturers concentrating on the reality by fourteen eighty two. He had transferred to the Convent of San Marco in Florence and soon he was preaching in the Church of San Lorenzo Uh. He gained a reputation for his learning and austerity but at first he did not get much attention for his preaching in fourteen eighty four though he reported his first vision about the scourge of the church. He began delivering prophetic sermons. And he preached the Church of Sanjin Yano and fourteen eighty five live and during lent and fourteen eighty six he spoke about the wrath of God and sinfulness and he called for reform in the church at this point. His popularity began to grow Savonarola preached in several different cities for a while but in fourteen ninety. He returned to Florence He. He soon began preaching and the Cathedral of Santa Maria. Del Fiore criticizing materialism and the leaders of the world. He also criticized the policies policies of the government which Florentine ruler Lorenzo de Medici offense to go. Lorenzo threatened to banish him. Lorenzo soon died and Savonarola Yvonne Arolla continued preaching Savonarola prophesized the scourge of Italy railing against vanity and corruption. He soon led his convent to break from the ruling organization of monasteries that it belonged to the congregation of Lombardy. He advocated for other comments to do the same and he ordered that his monks give up their possessions so that they could raise money for impoverished people once Medici rule ended. He began suggesting new policies in his sermons. Plus his prophecies were painting out. SAVONAROLA quickly became a political authority. He did not hold public office but under his guidance a new republic was established in fourteen. Ninety five he immediately set out to help impoverished people demanding more jobs and telling the churches churches to melt their gold and silver to buy food for the hungry he also called for more modesty songs. Deemed Profane were replaced with hymns people began wearing unadorned clothing and art and other inappropriate objects were burned. Marketplace Tech with Molly Wood
The next big thing in climate adaptation technology?
"We're looking at. How technology can help us adapt to climate change and reentering pieces from our series series? How we survive? Most of the San Francisco Bay area including a lot of Silicon Valley is right at sea level and in some cases slightly below. Most of that is barely protected by short dirt. Mounds called Pete Berms from the eighteen hundreds and scientists say in the future they are not going to cut it so sea level is projected to rise seven to ten feet by twenty one hundred. This is Leticia Grigny a senior scientists directing the resilient landscapes program at the nonprofit San Francisco go estuary institute we are in San Lorenzo California about thirty minutes south of Oakland at a place called the Oma wastewater treatment plant and we're standing right at the edge of the Bay so seven to ten feet were underwater right or at least a good part of us is molly. Molly might be seven feet. Thank you but but I'm definitely drowning so we'd have to replace these little berms with big engineer levies and we gotta choose if we're GONNA have them be smaller with beautiful slopes in front out of them with wetlands or big with steel. I'm here to visit a unique experiment. Researchers have actually built a smaller more beautiful version of a Levy B. It's called the horizontal Levy and it's the opposite of a big tall wall. It's basically a little two acre marsh with all kinds of different trees and in grasses on it and it's at the wastewater treatment plant because the plants need a lot of water. It doesn't smell the best but it's still nice like a little park with birds and planes flying overhead and you can hear a unique species of title marsh birds singing right now. All the title Marsh Song Sparrow found nowhere else in the world except here birds. Aside Marshes and wetlands are good at absorbing floodwaters naturally while concrete walls bounced the water back there are also expensive to maintain they might fall down in an earthquake and then those little dirt. Mounds just aren't tall enough. This levy is a different kind of approach. We have the idea of high tech. We really understand what that is to me. That's kind of very engineering engineering. It's similar to the steel and concrete sort of engineered levies that we see in the bay we also have landscape tech. We have these complex natural systems that are doing really important things for us and we need to take advantage of them and not think of that as something different than weird weird but this is just a new kind of tech and we need to use basically landscape tack to adopt climate change in addition to flood resistance the levy is also helping to clean leaned the wastewater surprisingly well in fact researchers say. It's especially good at filtering out the trace leftovers of medicine that people take Angela. PAREN- Tony He is with the University of California Berkeley. She's doing research on how well the plants on the horizontal Levy are able to filter the water. Naturally medicines pass through people's bodies ladies and end up in wastewater sometimes and It can be really hard to deal with those compounds when they end up in the environment but in our system everything seems to be the Transformed in some way and not for nothing. It's a crowd pleaser. Jason Warrener's general manager of the ORLA sanitary district he gives lots lots of tours of this levee project and he says it makes a strong case for a different approach to climate adaptation when people see infrastructure as part of their community. And maybe not something that looks analogous to park therein. They say yes. This is the type of infrastructure that we want to see. We don't WANNA see giant concrete rip grab levies. We want to see a natural system to that extent that we're providing a vision for people to see what see rise response might look like. It's been a great success. We need to improve. We need to make this less expensive and we need to make it do more. So the Levy looks good handle floodwater cleans wastewater the birds love it. The vision is working but it's expensive. You're talking about twenty five million dollars from Jerry Lewis the scientists with the story institute. We're showing the concept and set was now. We've got to engineer it so that it's billable and it's affordable and it's legal by legal means permits. Let's for this kind of project can be really hard to get the moment. This is
