Touring is traveling on a bicycle and that can mean many things that can be an overnight trip. It can be a trip of multiple length multiple years for me. I people always talked about. Follow your passion. And i felt very mc the longest time i didn't feel like i had a passion. There was nothing that made my heart skip a beat until i went on my first bike tour. A friend and i loaded pioneers on our bicycles. And we had a very short tour to the san juan islands. It was just a one night trip. And i absolutely fell in love with bike touring and it became very clear to me at that time. That was my passion. That's what it feels like to have a passion. And so i came back home and learned everything. I could about bike touring and eventually decided to to lead bike tours and now i lead and design trips for others as well so it is definitely become a big part of my life.

"Hey Everyone Danielle. Here I'm excited to get into this episode with our guest and curly will be back next week today Monica royer joins us on skimmed from the couch. She is the founder and CEO of Monica Andy An organic baby and children's clothing company. Monica had the idea to launch her company literally from the hospital after she gave birth. Who've with the mission of being the most thoughtful children's brand ever created and as we'll get into entrepreneurship definitely runs in her family Monica. Thank you for joining us today welcomed skin from the couch Danielle. Thank you so much for having me. I'm super excited to be here. Thank you. So I just WanNa say that like literally I think one of the days after I had told our team that I. Was Pregnant I had a call with Monica and I was like only slightly panicked about the fact that I was maybe a first time mom and really had no clue what I was doing and was like everyone keeps telling me I need a lay at and I don't even know what that is and Google that and Monica was like such a calming presence and literally knows this case inside a now. Thank you so much what we're is really excited to welcome people into Motherhood, in new, parenthood. So congratulations to you. Thank you. So let's start with an easy question scam your resume. To actually take back to what you can't see on link to in, which is that I came from a very hardworking family and so at the age of twelve, my mom was the manager, the ultrasound department at Good Samaritan. Hospital in Downers Grove and she's like you're gonNA start volunteering. So she went an air sign me up I was working at the front desk outpatient registration and that at fourteen she was like job permit time. So we went I started stocking the shelves at now very defunct retail store of which I. Can't even remember the name but work ethic with something was really important to my parents and so I spent all the time before I graduated from college with all of my summer jobs in the hospital. So physical therapy like you name it I worked all around the hospital when University of Illinois in Champaign Urbana graduated and I immediately got a job in the pharmaceutical industry. So I spent the first decade doing absolutely nothing related to what I'm currently doing but I worked at both Pfizer and Novartis for that decade which was. Very different from currently in that I launched. Monica. Nandy officially in July of twenty fourteen. So now this is my new baby and what I've been most recently working on what's something that we can't Google about you or look up on Lincoln I originally wanted to be a marine biologist. nine or ten old I would have told you wanted to be a marine biologist terrified of the ocean look at seeing but being in it. So that was sort of a non starter, the marine biology career, but I remained totally obsessed with like orcas. Great White Sharks in my very favorite place to travel as the San Juan islands outside of Seattle, marine, biologist, and pharmaceutical industry. This is all very, very interesting. So we're GONNA get into your family. And the support system that you've built around you. But I when I was talking to you a few weeks ago, you were talking about your mom and how her story had such an impact on you tell us about what it was like growing up in your house. What kind of expectations were there? Yeah. So my mom is an immigrant from India. She moved here from India's her dad was dying of Emphysema and some money home when she was nineteen. Years old as I have always a revered both of my parents Andy I always say that will never win the lottery because we did the first time by the parents that we got. So a massive amount of respect for both of them. But my mom, there was something about the family that she came from her family was very matriarchal in in a society in India that was much the opposite in. So my grandfather had nine children altogether the first. Five of which were girls as in India, like at that time most people wanted boys but my grandfather really cherish having girls in he educated each of them like they were boys and so when my mom came here, she came here on sheer well of the education that she had received and so education was of the utmost importance specifically for my mom mom was the only person in her family to marry outside of her Indian cultures or a dad is. Know his ancestors from European background and so my brother and I were so close growing up because we were so different from everybody else we were between world instead of fitting into any world in particular and so I think that unique experience really shaped the adults that we became.

"Made up. Komo's Brian Calvert found out no one really has a definitive answer yet. I called four different school districts in heard from several others each bracing for makeup days eventually. It's likely we'll be having to add some days on at the end of the school year, Kathy Reeves with Everett public schools says a final call on this is still likely a month away more potential storms coming it's really too early to make any sort of statement, we had two days built into our calendar. And which is typically enough Andy months with the Mukilteo district says they now have seven snow days kids in Mukilteo are back for a half day today. But then they're scheduled to be off next week for midwinter break, Andy you're not going to take that away. Are you so many people have already made plans for midwinter break though? We're not getting to change those plans now all the districts. I spoke with said they will wait until the threat of another snow day has passed before they make decisions about cutting future days off or adding days to the end of the school year. Brian Calvert, KOMO news. Going to have to add a makeup day for a number of districts this morning because we do have some schools still closed close today are Bellingham Bremerton central Kitsap hood canal, Kent, Marysville, Morton, north Mason north. "Tom Romano. Thanks for joining us every year, we visit the New York Times traveler show, or should I say more correctly, Mark visited the New York Times travel show? And since some great interviews back to Tom, and we have them today will rejoin Mark back there in key Largo in just a bit. But while Mark was at the travel show, we wandered around. And he rounded up some folks from the San Juan island, Mark. What do you have for us? Tom here with Barbara merit. She is kit with communications and the San Juan islands, which is in the Pacific northwest. Just not too far from us in Sacramento Meno, Barbara we were just talking about what or two folks from the west coast doing on the east coast at the New York Times travel show, but you're here to create some awareness. Among people of were what the San Juan islands are all about. That's right. And we were on the New York Times list of best places to go in twenty thousand nineteen. So they picked orcas silent for it's incredible food scene. And also because Oprah just bought a house there. We figure she is pretty good taste. But. The San Juan islands themselves were number two places to go on the New York Times list in twenty eleven so the New York Times loves us. And so we decided to show a little support for them as well. So for folks who have never been up in the sound and never gone to the islands before. If you're traveling independently or you're traveling with a group, what are some of the things that people are going to want to do. And of course, is important to know that one of the ways basically to get there is by ferry boat either that or by seaplane. That's right. We say they're real islands real close. So we have no bridges. So one of the best things about getting to the islands is riding the ferry where you can really relax. You can take a floatplane or wheel plane right from downtown Seattle or from seatac airport. So able get to the islands they experience just this chill by ticket to relax. It's an outdoor destination. So there's hiking biking kayaking. We have four lighthouses two of which you can go inside. We also have incredible. Well and wildlife watching you can do that from shore or from a tour boat or even from kayak. So there's lots to do and one of the things that the New York Times called out was. Thai table scene. So we have three shellfish farms and our restaurants, many of them have organic farms, and so that food that you're eating has just been collect from the sea or picked out of a garden, and it's on the table within a couple of hours. So for people who are looking for kind of that realistic that we use the word authentic ally. And we're standing here in front of the lavender smell is kind of wasting up to my nose here from Linda in in on the island. So I mean on San Juan island itself. So there are lots of things to do in the islands. But what a great place to just go and kind of kick back for a week or so we say, there's nature and nurture. So you can spend time in nature, you can have good food, and then you can be nurtured. We have some day spas. That are lovely. There's big healing community in the island. So if you want acupressure acupuncture. It's all there. We say it's the gathering of the tribes, and you can even take a ferry boat to Victoria, which isn't a bad destination to throw into your trip there. If you got a passport absolutely there's wonderful connect with the Washington state ferries, which is the largest ferry service in the country. So it's about an hour from the mainland to get to the San Juan islands by Washington state ferry. And then it's only another hour to get. Canada. Pretty it's pretty amazing. The San Juan islands, I'm truly the New York Times has decided one of America's most popular destinations for twenty nineteen. Of course, Barbara that's probably something that we kind of already knew the secret of the Pacific northwest is not as great of a secret is it used to be. No it is. It's just a beautiful place to come year round, especially when other places are snowy or hot and humid. We have a very very temperate climate. "He's dispatched captain, George Pickett and sixty six American soldiers of the ninth infantry regiment under pickets command to San Juan island with orders to prevent the British from landing at all the regiments sailed over there aboard the USS Massachusetts. They were concerned that a squatter population of Americans would begin to occupy San Juan island. If the Americans were not kept in check. So the British than sit three warships of their own under the command of captain, Geoffrey Hornby to counter, the Americans pick, it was famously quoted as saying defiantly, we'll make a Bunker Hill of it which obviously placed him in the national limelight. That's not the statement that anybody was looking for. So this this this thing. Becomes a sort of standoff it escalates by August tenth eighteen fifty nine. There are four hundred sixty one Americans with fourteen cannons. Under Colonel Silas, Casey that are opposed by five British warships mounting seventy guns carrying twenty one hundred and forty men you've got the governor of the colony of Vancouver island James Douglas getting involved. He's ordering British Rear, Admiral, Robert Baines, Dilan marines on San Juan island and engaged. The American soldiers under the command of Brigadier General, general hardy, the whole thing's a stupid mess over a over a squabble. About a pig is insane. News of this crisis reaches Washington, London. Obviously officials from both nations are shocked and immediately take action to try to calm, the potentially explosive international incident surrounding pig and as a result of these negotiations both sides agree to retain joint, military occupation of this island until a final sediment settlement can be reached. They both reduced their presence to a token force of no more than one hundred men. You got the English camp. Set up on the north end of San Juan the American camp on the south end on a high windswept meadow, subtle suitable for artillery barrages against shipping and today the Union Jack still flies above the English camp, which is in quotes being raised and lowered daily by Park Rangers making it one of the few places without diplomatic status where US government employees regularly hoist the flag of another country, though, this is actually for commemorative purposes. So this state of affairs that we just described where they British Americans negotiate. They both agree to retain, joint, military occupation. That goes on for twelve more years, then the dispute peacefully resolved after more than a decade of confrontation and military bluster during which time the local British authorities consistently lobbied London to seize back, the Puget Sound region entirely puke. Puget anyway, the Americans elsewhere or busy with the civil war, blah, blah, blah, October twenty first eighteen seventy two they finally have a commission that decides in favor of the United States.
