"Denver to return. In Santa Rosa, Mike dewald, Casey BS. Meanwhile, all of these storms back east are leading to cancellations and delays for holiday travelers here in the Bay Area, mostly on Southwest Airlines, flights, but are really across the board, so let's just take a look at the stats here. On flight aware dot com and I'm going to start off by looking at SFO and right now they're reporting to see here 91 total flight cancellations in the last 24 hours. Let's go over to Oakland, we're reporting 130 total flight cancellations in the last 24 hours. San Jose 117. So that's a large number at all three of those airports. Also a banner for San Jose saying that there are delays of average of about 28 minutes and increasing at that airport. So obviously you want to check your email and check the airline apps and check everything else she can before you head to any of the airports and try to get home after the holidays. Well, it's been another year and that means another 12 months of facing COVID risks. Keith manconi spoke with a local public health expert about how the Bay Area has written the COVID waves of 2022. The year started with the record breaking omicron surge. And now is it ends we're facing a spike in cases once again. But hope remains high that we'll be able to avoid a repeat of those COVID explosions that have strained our health system to the breaking point. Doctor John swarg, professor emeritus with UC Berkeley's school of public health, says in large part, we have the vaccines to thank for that. We know that these vaccines work, not so much to prevent getting infected, but they do work very well for preventing really serious disease. So this is what I would have expected the vaccines to be able to do for us. Also making a difference, stronger background immunity due to prior infections and better treatments for COVID. So now, what could come next? Well, schwarzburg says this is a virus that continues to change at a rapid pace. So the most honest answer that I think a scientist or a physician can say to what's going to be happening in the future with his viruses, we don't know. Keith manconi, and for more reflections on the top news and trends of 2022 tune in to this weekend's kcbs in depth program, it'll be on the air Sunday at 8 30 a.m. and again at 8 30 p.m.. Democrats have switched up the presidential primary calendar in 2024, case CBS Chris Ann Carlo with more on why California's status didn't change in the reshuffling. For decades, it's been Iowa, Iowa, Iowa, and then on to New Hampshire. To start the nominating process for president of the United States on the democratic side in a little white state like Iowa where they're more tractors than voters probably didn't make any sense. Democratic strategist Gary south says shifting South Carolina into the pole position allows the party to start in a state where registered Democrats are more reflective of the nationwide makeup, but if that's the logic then why not California? You need to start this process in a smaller state where you don't have to have massive amounts of resources in order to compete as a Democrat running for president. South says the scale of the state would drown grassroots campaigns before they even had a chance to build momentum. Over 20 million registered voters here, we have the second most expensive media market in the country in Los Angeles. We have the fourth most expensive media market in the country in the Bay Area. "This is the California report. Good morning. I'm Saul Gonzalez in Los Angeles. While thousands of evacuated residents who fled South Lake Tahoe because of the Kaldor fire are being allowed back home. Other communities remain in limbo that includes grizzly flats between Lake Tahoe and Sacramento, which is where the fire first started nearly a month ago. El Dorado County Sheriff's Sergeant Eric Palm, Berg says. There's a lot of damage crews are trying to sift through. There's a lot of different things going on the grizzly flat area. We literally have thousands, if not tens of thousands of trees that have been burned that a lot of those are going to be cut down as hazards. There's just a very large amount of debris up there. PGD is making repairs and Palmer says getting utilities up and running has been a huge challenge. Those homes do not currently have water because grizzly flat water is still trying to repair their service lines. So that is another reason so the infrastructure in the area Trying to make those repairs get that all up to speed Now, In terms of the firefight itself, crews continue to make progress in building containment, particularly in areas of concern, like around Kirkwood ski resort in the towns of Christmas Valley and Echo Lake. The fire has burned more than 216,000 acres and this nearing 50% containment. Meanwhile, to the north, thousands of firefighters continue to battle the state's largest blaze. The Dixie Fire, which has now burned more than 914,000 acres. Particular concern is the Dixie Valley, where some homes were destroyed over the weekend. Several spot fires have threatened containment lines in the past few days as crews are now being assigned to areas where the fire is most active. The blaze has already burned nearly 700 homes turning now to the pandemic. In the San Joaquin Valley, state officials have issued a covid 19 health order after determining the valleys. Hospitals have met the threshold to inter surge protocols. What does that mean? Well, hospitals in the 12 County region must accept transfer patients if they have ICU bed capacity. And if there are no ICU beds available, hospitals outside the region must accept patients when clinically appropriate. San Joaquin County Public Health officer Dr Maggie Park says hospitals in the Central Valley are struggling right now, our current daily numbers of confirm positive cases and the number of people admitted to hospitals for Covid 19. Now surpassed the peak numbers we had during the wave of summer 2020. We knew that this surge might be as bad as last summer's, but we've passed last summer's numbers and still haven't reached the peak of this current surge. Park says that while other parts of the state have seen covid number stabilize, that's not the case in the Central Valley, which is some of the lowest vaccination rates in the state. In fact, less than 40% of residents in four counties. Kern Kings, Mariposa, Merced said have been fully vaccinated. The hospital order from the state's Department of Public Health will be in place until Thursday, when the region's numbers will be re evaluated. And staying on Covid. According to the California Department of Public Health 47 million covid vaccinations have been given in the state in 84 million tests administered when it comes to Cova testing. One increasingly popular option is at home test kits. I talked about home test kits with Catherine Woo Healthcare writer with the Atlantic whose long written about covid and Covid testing My first question do at home. Covid tests really work? Well, it really, really, very is actually, um, depending on what you count as a home test. There are really dozens of models out there. At this point. You know, some of them you like spitting in a tube where you swab your nose, and then you ship it off to a lab and they process it and they send you The results. And that's still nice because you don't have to go to a doctor's office or a testing site to take your test. Others you do the entire process yourself in your living room. And basically the way that I break it down is You sort of distinguish between the way that the virus is being detected in that test. That's generally where act were accuracy, segregates. So for those lab tests and for some of the entirely at home tests, what they're looking for is virus genetic material, So it's really easy to detect. A very tiny amount of virus makes those tests super sensitive and they're really accurate. That changes a little bit when you switch to a different method, where you're no longer looking for the Medic material, But you're looking for viral proteins. So you know, chunks of the virus. Um, you're basically just scanning for what's already there. So it's a lot easier to miss the virus when it's in pretty low amounts. Uh, so that's kind of where the big question is on accuracy. And Catherine is anybody out there regulating these tests like the FDA or some other agency? Yeah, absolutely. That's a really good point to bring up. So the FDA is regulating these tests, but I think what's important to keep in mind is there are still you know, some black market tests floating around out there that are not FDA approved, and the FDA does keep a list on their website. You can search so things like FDA, covid 19 molecular diagnostics or antigen diagnostics, for example. Mm. And the tests aren't cheap, right? At least a lot of them aren't so how much can people expect to shell out? I think this is the trick with a lot of home testing some of the cheapest tests out there, and some of the most convenient tests out there are still costing like $24 for a two pack. And if you're you're trying to test yourself multiple times a week that can really rack up a bill, especially if you live in a household with other people, and you'll all want to be testing if you're worried about exposure or risk in that sense. And then you know the more expensive lab tests or the ones that search for that more sensitive genetic material. They can get even more expensive $50.75 dollars. It really costs quite a bit. And I know there are a lot of experts saying, you know, why isn't the government footing this bill? Why can't we all have access to free rapid tests, which they are actually doing in some other countries? Mhm. Police departments get guess what police officers do. I believe this is a growing trend in in America today. The mayor of Los Angeles have proposed cutting the police budget there by $150 million in Colorado. There's a bill that would allow police officers to be sued. Sergeant Rob Pride is with the Fraternal Order of police, and he's a patrol sergeant in Colorado. Here's what he told ABC Action News in Tampa. Then you talk about Colorado and you go across the country in fact, There's an outfit out there called the Police Executive Research Forum. They have reported that 63% of departments nationwide saw a decrease in applicants in the last five years. Okay, so this is a trend that goes back pre pandemic. In the last five years, people applying to be officers has been dropping significantly. Sergeant Pride says The recent efforts to defund police Department's that's only made matters worse will be relegated to B, a reactive police forces with no additional programs and no additional interaction other than To enforce the law in a rest. You know that's not a profession. I want to be a part of So Aubrey Aquino made some phone calls for us on this yesterday and talked to the folks at the Sacramento Police Department. And they say they have not seen a drop off that it's remained consistent both in applications and a number of officers retiring over the years. The requirements to be a police officer have gotten more stringent. I mean, more officers are required, especially if they're going to be moving up the ranks, toe have college degrees or additional training. So that was happening pre pandemic right And then after the pandemic and the riots and moved to defund, a lot of them are just saying, You know what? I'm I'm a year away from retirement. I've got a lot of time on the books for sick time and leave amount, and then you're in Colorado and they say, Way to say I could get sued. Wait, wait a minute here. I don't know if I want.
