Interview With Susan Park
"Or those of you who are foodies and I know if you don't consider yourself a food, do you like food? Some of our most popular episodes are when we bring on people who own restaurants or who are chefs and my guest today. Is kind of a combination. She's not a chef. She's married to a chef. This is Susan g young park, and she and her husband are the owners of a very unusual Taco place near the campus is called. I think I'm saying this right Revolucionario? Is that correct? Yes, it's a revolutionary on North African Tacos on. At one, four, three, six, West Jefferson, boulevard currently were only open on weekends, Saturdays, and Sundays for pick up orders only from noon till three, and actually I am a chef to learn more. Oh okay. Okay. Yeah. Well, you know, I definitely want to do a deep dive. Into, your establishment. But you know since we're recording this in early May and is still during the whole shutdown, and this is a restaurant I gotta ask you because we'll put this out relatively soon. This episode I have to ask you like, how has it been for you guys with the shutdown with the limited time that you're open. How's that going? It's been very, very asymmetric call. Because I also have. Started a nonprofit at the end of February and a lot of people keep asking me how I knew to start early with the Asian. American. Specific food. Bank. It's because I am an Asian American person. Who? WHO also owns also Asian American owner. And I. My restaurant is near USC SO I. Get to talk to a lot of. Asian, American, and Asian international students. So my restaurant very community driven. So. As an Asian American person business owner and somebody who speaks to Asian American students in Asian international students on a regular basis. You know I could feel the of sacks of you know, the the Wuhan Virus China virus. Right one international news broke in in December, and I can feel it affecting my business to I can feel it affecting my business, my in store business just tanked. I made it by with a lot of lot of catering more because they kept asking my customers helped me out catering orders than. And then a lot of a Chinese American students in particular in Chinese. International. Students who come to my restaurant. Started telling me. They just felt really anxious and they had a feeling of like just more isolated, and also I also do a lot of tenants advocacy work I've been in touch with CCD in. Chinatown. MOM since last year I helped him out occasionally with things at the request as I could see for myself, I mean. Koreatown didn't get hit that bad. Early, a chinatown business in Chinatown just tanked. You know at in December and January some restaurants. It was like ninety nine percent down the streets were empty. There's nobody. And then my friends from the San Gabriel Valley started reporting. The business was down in the San Gabriel Valley. And then it rolled into Korea town. So Koreatown was hit a little bit later. By declining sales and then in my restaurant to. So January usually means like a huge surge in business. And a lot of my customers are international students, not as Asian international students, but international students because my husband is also he's a French born Algerian Berber and Berbers indigent people to North Africa. So we also have a lot of European customers in African customers, and because we're North African Taco restaurant, we also have a lot of Mexican Latin next customers so very international. We hear a lot of news from everybody to because we're, I'm a owner operators on that restaurant every day that it's open. So I'm in touch with just. So many different communities. And just business was just was not picking up and beginning in January I started. Reducing, my restaurant hours drastically because it just wasn't worth it. It just wasn't worth it to old. You know just to get all that going and it was like this is not what any you know So then I started my food bank initiative I started I started my bag initiative before a stylish on nonprofit. Net Song early I. Think I met her Nebi. Rarity. A month after I had started my brown bags for all skid row initiative. Because wins, virus news broke of a mysterious virus mysterious You know that's a scare scare tactic. In China and it's highly infectious in know we live in a global village? and. Experts have been warning about pandemics for a long time and America wouldn't be prepared for one. So my first thought in January was to start my Brown Dad's for everyone initiative for skid row because in an era of pandemic, who do you want to help the most? I, I mean, who should you be healthy? It's the most vulnerable people were most exposed. Then it's going to be homeless in the House to people. And who are the poorest of the poor, the an housed I mean, it's the black residents. Elderly residents are skip Vo. So I, the Brown. Doctrines, round that for everyone initiative really took off fast because the idea was catchy. People could wrap their mind around like Paquito, Brown bag lunch. You know. So I, had neighborhood associations like four hundred members hanging. Why? Why can't all of us do like ten Brown bags? That's four thousand bomb. Gad's already

Brush Fire Breaks Out Near Homes In Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles
"You can see the smoke from Miles. We've got a fast moving fire in the force above Azusa. We go live to in depth team coverage It starts with can extend seventies Pete Demetriou, Pete down. Now in K Next 10 70 salesmen, Shaw, he's in sky free, Chris. It seems like we see fires up here every year. Part of the reason why these fires were so hard to put down even when the winds are light like they are today is because the hills are so steep and fires were so effective at burning uphill, especially whether aided with the really thick brush. Which we see in the Angeles National Forest. That's what we're seeing today. So ah, Lot of spoke with the smokers kind of sitting in San Gabriel Candy, which really shows you just how light the winds are One fortunate thing for firefighters, though, is that the forest damn. There were forced Reservoir that is, is right here. It's less than a mile from where the active flames are watching all these water dropping helicopter like clockwork coming in here we have Ellen City fire and county fire and we even have the Erickson Air Crane, which has a really high capacity of water to come up, and they've really been kind of trying to pound the fire near the top of the ridge line. "Bodmer. Thank you so much for joining us. Thank you, I think it's really cool. What you're doing because I would have loved something like this when I was in Asian American teenager. So I'm pleased that you know this generation of young Asian Americans will have that. Maybe they can grow up without some of the baggage that we have. Baggage and should but yes. I wanted to talk a little bit about you. Know your upbringing in your memoir, which is called love loss and what we ate. You talked about growing up in new. York and L. A. and I had no idea you. You grew up in in Los Angeles. Where did you grow up in L. A.? And what were your experiences like? I grew up in La. Puente which is in the San Gabriel, Valley Yeah. Winter Workman, highschool my mother got transferred from Sloan Kettering Hospital in New, York, to city of Hope Hospital in Duarte or are Katie I. Guess, and so that's why we moved and I went to High School in San Gabriel Valley, so yeah. I mean I consider myself such a New Yorker, because of the New York's along. It was my first point of entry into the United States when I immigrated here when I was four in. So you know that's what winds up getting a lot of play in my personal history, but I have very slowly formed deep memories. Of My years in La Pointe. Day, and you know my mother still lives in the house. I grew up in so whenever I come to La I always wind up going there, of course. Did you like growing up in L. A.? Did you like growing up La Puente? Was it a cool place to grow up, I, did not. Bad at my mother for moving to Los Angeles for years I, really? How's it against her? My poor mom, she's a single mom, and she's from south India and so she couldn't take the cold. And you know expensive to live in Manhattan, and so I understand as an adult, and as a parent all the reasons that she, of course you know moved us across the country as a child, it just seemed hugely inconvenient and down because in new. York I was much more independent because everybody walks, and you're in a very densely populated metropolitan area in Los Angeles says you buy as no like there's no center. There's no downtown in especially in La Pointe Day I was in a suburb and you need a car to get. In so, I felt like my independence was with stifled drastically, just moving cities, and then I was also I was in La Pointe Day I wasn't in like Sherman oaks or something. So you know in the eighties. When I was in high school, there were a lot of gangs in la, Puente and other than South Central. La It was a very seriously dangerous place we had. Had, Mexican. Gangs. We had a lot of Tolo and SCHOLLA's. And some of them are friends, but some of them also bullied me, and so I had my little conclave of friends who were mostly Filipino because our school did have a lot of Mexicans a lot of Filipinos lot of African Americans probably the most Mexican, and also Caucasian, but from my freshman year my senior. Senior year, you could really see the population of the schools you much more ethnic, in Brown and so I found it hard. You know because I'm Indian, and my skin is Brown on face value you could think I was Mexican may be, but then once I opened. My Mount was obvious and I don't think they were enough Indians at my school for anybody to form any. Any kind of opinion about me except other you know

They Call Us Andrew Ahn
"We talk a little bit about what I heard that? Your Dad said in response to you coming out. Which was as I understand it. Something along the lines of okay. We get it but keep an open mind. Yeah it's it's a thing you know like I have to say like my dad has really My Dad's really Like grown and you know he said that which you know again like I kind of as as good as I could have hoped for but You know now. Like he's he's he's really you know like proud of me and happy for me and my career you know. I will say that like I wonder what this would have been like had. I not gotten into Sundance. You know with that film like know if the film sucks you know. Maybe like this wouldn't have gone over as well But you know it's they I think they were just kind of Shocked and I think they were also just like shocked by like how I did it. You know that I didn't just say like I'm gay like that. I made this fill like you know at one point during that conversation my mom said like. Did you make this film just to like do this to say that you're gay and I said Yeah. And my mom was like she just shook her head and she said. You really didn't have to do that. And you know I think Yeah I I just I think they were kind of just so in shock that it. It took them a a moment. But I will say like now like You know it's been a little bit up and down but You know I really feel their support and their excitement for me In my career the other story I really like is Is You explaining to Your Jeff? You'll appreciate this. The the explain to your dad. The how the odds of getting into Sundance. How like like a big deal. It was. Yeah so I I called my parents like immediately after I found out that I got into Sundance and And like my dad had kind of heard about it but he didn't really know what met in the way that like. I know what like what that meant for me in my career And so I. I told my parents I was like It's easier to get into Harvard than it is to get into sundance and suddenly they're like. Oh my God like like. My mom had reached out to the Korean newspaper. You know it's it's things like that Yeah you know it's so funny it's like Like I think they were probably still a little bit like worried about like me coming out in you know being so public about my sexuality but You know the fact that it was like an achievement. You know like like a good grade like getting into a good school like that. I think that made it a little bit easier. Which is terrible but like I'll take it like you know I I needed. I needed that win at that time in my life. It's like basically like getting into Super Harvard. It's movie Harvard. Exactly that's that's the only way they could get you know so that was your your first short and kind of your first taste of People being aware of you as a filmmaker and then from there did you. Did you immediately do spun? I was it? Was it the the next big project you did or was there was something between that. Yeah I mean you know after I I graduated from From Film School You know and a couple months later like played my thesis film at Sundance It really took me You know a couple years to to get a feature going to get spun it going and You know in the in the meantime I was a you. Know a applying to labs and workshops and you know fellowships things like that But I had a day job. You know like I was working as an admissions counselor for college You know I I ended up Like working at a Like a private Like Sat Academy in San Gabriel Like torturing these high school students you know like with the same torture that I had in high school and so I just you know you do have credentials of getting into the Harvard filibuster. It was just like you know it. Was this time in my life. Where I you know it's like I. I had to to pay the bills and films weren't going to do that and so You know I I had a day job. Had A desk job and and doing that was you. Know like actually like really Helpful for me and I feel like I learned a lot about myself about you. Know my just kind of my interpersonal skills. but You know I wanted to make films. I wanted to be a filmmaker and so I I had my i. You know On on the prize the all time and and Made Spun I. Finally you know four years after graduating from film school and then I just was like I gotta get this thing into the best film festival that I can you know. Let's let's go for the Harvard to film. Schools are a of Peissel's again and see if I can get into Sundance and you know we we. We got in and And I quit my job because I felt like if there were ever a moment to to do this. You know to really commit to being a filmmaker who's going to be now I. I often think about spun night because It was I remember I was at the premiere at Sundance. It was such a moving experience It really hit close to home in a lot of ways as a korean-american is the son of Immigrants Green immigrants but I also I also think about what a minor miracle it was. That film even exists on every level in terms of like it being like almost entirely in Korean. It's it's an American story but like it you know it's it's also coming of age gay drama and then also it's about like these sort of illicit hookups in you know in these Korean spas and you're like okay. The marketing for this is going to be very very delicate.

Yuval Sharon's Not-So-'Sweet Land'
"Sharon is used to getting some pretty baffled looks when he tries to explain the work of his opera company which is called the industry. Sharon's hopscotch for example took place inside cars driving around L. A. In invisible cities people listen to his opera on headphones as they move through. La's Union station. Sharon's latest piece is called sweet land. It's a collaborative air opera about colonialism. And displacement is set in the La State historic park which is just north of downtown in sweetland opera is used to challenge and dismantle some myths about America's origins. Here's Yuval Sharon. I have been speaking a lot recently about opera. This country being a remaining colonialist art form because so much of opera that we see in this country is the German French Italian repertoire in those languages telling those stories and here we are in America Retelling the stories over and over again and it seems like especially in our times now when there is so much to talk about and there is such a need for artists to be speaking about the kind of things that that we've taken on with this project and so much more. It seems strange to go into the privileged sphere of an Opera House and hear a story about nineteenth century. Italy There's something about that that feels so escapist And feels like it's a. It's trying to pretend like the situation out on the street in our daily lives. is not as dire as it really is So I think that that was for me. A real push to try and create a piece like like sweet land and one of the most important aspects of it was creating the conditions for collaboration To really flow something that would be not another iteration of a kind of hierarchical leadership But the idea that a more horizontal consensus based process would be something that I could offer a kind of antidote to some of the problems that we're talking about before we talk about the story and the music I wanna ask you about the venue it said in the La State historic park and this was native land. It was home to the San Gabriel Band of mission Indians then. It was the site of the Southern Pacific Transportation Companies River Station where migrants from around the world would disembark trains Ryan and now it said against the skyline of downtown Los Angeles next to a metro track next to the one ten freeway. There's like a little wine store across the street. It's got so much history. Why was it a good place for you to set the story to me when we were conceiving of this project we were thinking about the right site for where this this piece should take place and of course we started thinking about things like warehouses or alternative spaces but but you know still interior spaces and I was hearing from my collaborators over and over again how much The relationship to land with such a crucial aspect of what they wanted to explore with this piece and when it comes to that relationship with land it seemed to me that one of the one of the one of the places that that really hold so much of. La's cultural history and meaning. Is that sliver of land? That is now the state historic park. you mentioned it's a couple of its iterations but it had so many others for a long time. It was considered a Brownfield as if Meaning that they didn't think that anything could grow on it anymore because of how terribly it was maintained during industrialization during the railroad era So so thinking that. And it wasn't until Lauren. Bon came up with not a cornfield project. This really bold experiment in kind of replanting The land showing it's continuous fertility Before that people sort of abandoned it and thinking that that was the most important tongue village that it was the site of this crucial Spanish settlement that it was this a flood plain all of those things for a while were buried under layers of industrialization and thanks to Lauren and th thanks now to the park. It has It has this new life to it but those layers Still struggle to come out those voices that are still part of the archaeology that layering effect. That's in the land Still has a lot of voices that have been suppressed and a big part of what the opera was about was not to pinpoint any one particular language or one particular story to lift up but instead to think about and to invite the audience to contemplate Those stories that are in the land that were
