"Hey Friends boutique here. I'm a photographer, a writer, a mom and a relative, and I'm really happy to be here with all of you today. Hey folks, doctor doctor here, pivot, shift, good day. I am a professor at UCLA. I run the data warriors lab. I'm a researcher a relative and a mama, and it is so great to be back on another episode of all my relations. Last year, right around this time, we did a survey asking all of you what content do you wanted to hear? And there was a resounding request for content focused on reconnecting to one's indigeneity to community and to reclaiming the connections that colonization has tried to keep broken for so many generations in some cases. Totally. Learning what you guys wanted to hear really got us thinking because Machu and I were both reds girls, right? We are both born and raised in our communities. We maintain our community connections and our kinship bonds and responsibilities. Because I mean, you know, there's a lot of responsibility there too. You know, it all good. But so reconnecting for us has not been a part of our indigenous experience. But of course, we recognize that so many folks were not raised in community. And some do not even know where to start, right? And so we wanted to bring you the stories of two amazing indigenous people. One of whom you guys know very well and one of whom we know you will also totally love. And they take us on their journeys of learning about who they are, learning, to whom they belong and how to go about making meaningful connections as indigenous relatives in a society that has sought to destroy our kinship systems. And in a society that has sought to assimilate us into essentially into white people. Sorry. All my relations. All right, so we are really lucky to have two relatives actually on the pod today. Who are going to share their stories of reconnection, the first is Daniel French, hailing from the San Gabriel valley, east of east LA, Daniel is the youngest of three siblings. He strums the harana Segunda, sings emcees, keys, and in the summer of 2011, he drove across the continent, documenting his family's stories. He's very proud of his chicano Mexican frontier so Mohawk, German, Italian, French, English, and beyond backgrounds. All of them. Everything. Daniel's passionate about oral histories, music, freestyling. He works as a full-time musician and storyteller, and he most recently finished his BA in sociology from azusa Pacific university. He lives by the motto, risk everything to live your dreams and know that mysterious forces will come to your aid..

"A situation where l A county officials have warned that they're running out of ambulances because ambulances are just waiting lined up in a queue in front of the hospitals for as long as eight hours trying to drop off patients there, and there's concern that heart attack patients and stroke patients aren't getting the prompt care that they would need. S so it's a pretty bleak situation out there. We know that. As of last night L. A county was averaging about 187 deaths a day to put it. In another perspective, That's One death every eight minutes. It Z unprecedented situation. It's heartbreaking in the fact that the paramedics were unable to disembark their patients right from the ambulance, and so they're having to wait in the parking lot. The hospital, sometimes for hours. That means that ambulance is out of commission right and unable to go to pick up another person who may be in need. Yes, that's right. And it's causing. You know major problems. I mean, officials are trying to get out of it through through a number of very unusual ways. Um, one of them is creating up these temporary ambulance of receiving areas. This is a situation where the hospitals are so crowded that that every space in the emergency department It's filled up, including the hallways and in such a situation where they're hoping to do is actually be able to drop off more patients and have them be watched over by one paramedic, or E. M. T. And that's in an effort to try to hopefully get more. Ambulances out into the public again. It's not an ideal situation, but it's the best that they can do. It's so much wrong and I may tell us a little bit because you reported on Alhambra, the hospital there. What kind of community does does it? Service is it obviously it's a smaller hospital, right? It is, and that's one of the things the it's these olders and smaller hospitals that are facing the brunt of the crisis. I know Alhambra pretty well. It's an area that is, you know, I have the Asian and heavily Latino area. We know that places like the San Gabriel Valley and the East side are being disproportionately hit hard by the pandemic. There are lots of people who are, you know, working class people who need to leave home to be able to work. But the problem is, is that because they're leaving home there at higher risk, and they get the disease on and then they bring the disease home and its president in the home. If you look at how crowded the ICUs are in the San Gabriel Valley, there have been a number of cases in the last couple of days. In which there have been zero available ICU beds across this and Google Valley. Same was the situation across South East L, a county and it's a situation where there is just so much death. That the morgues are filling up funeral homes in places like East L, A are so full that they are unfortunate having to turn away family members who had just been there for another. Funeral it Zahara breaking situation and even even even Alhambra Hospital. Um, there have been, you know, medical staff members that have died and every Every week. We're seeing more and more health care providers get sick and pass away from Cove. It You know again. You can't look at the pictures wrong. And here, the reporting what you're telling us right now and not not just be gobsmacked. Right by what's going on. And and not understand what a crisis. This really is. It's not just the old And infirmed and the underlying conditions getting sick. It's it's even young people, right? It's it's across. It runs the gamut. Yes, and what's even more alarming is that The rates of death are increasing for all age groups on been another concerning issue is that you know, early on in the pandemic. It was really only a small percentage of people who were dying without any medical underlying medical conditions at all. It was about 7%. That has increased to 14%. So now 14% of everyone who's died from Cove it in L. A county had no underlying medical conditions. So this is a situation where Younger people are spreading the disease and younger people are increasingly dying of the disease. Unfortunately, it's also situation for younger people are also spreading it to older people, and they're the ones hit hardest, so we'll have situations. Um, you know, anecdotally, where it Z younger adults who are beating with their older family members and giving the virus to them. You mentioned that morgues air filling up that funeral homes are unable to do their jobs. Even even the hospital's themselves. They're having trouble finding places. For the recently deceased, right T O, where to put even the bodies. That's right. And so the county has actually had to call in the National Guard to come in and help them store bodies in the county medical examiner Coroner's office because of because there's no place to store the bodies at the private mortuaries. There's that reporter about how Governor Gavin Newsom had to order 5000 additional body bags, and most of them were reserved for l A because of the situation that we're in right now. When we talk about I mean people getting sick with covert, obviously is is the big concern, but You know, As I mentioned, there are other ailments that people have as well. People have strokes and heart attacks and car crashes and things like that were ambulances where paramedics are needed. What kind of a strain does this put on those other things that people have to have dealt with as well. It's a big strain. One of my colleagues, Marissa Gerber, she talked with a 44 year old high school teacher in the South Bay. He was actually scheduled to have a kidney transplant at Cedars. In mid January, and it was called off. It was postponed because the hospital said, you know what? We're just out of ICU bed and this is a serious situation for this particular teacher. His kidneys are only running at 3%, and he has to undergo dialysis at home for nine hours a day. So this is not a situation where that's just affecting covert patients. It's also affecting people who really need these urgent. Kinds of medical procedures and surgeries, you know as soon as possible. What else is the county trying to do wrong in trying to Help hospitals out, get them out of this, or at least it to alleviate the pressure that they're under. So they're trying some very unusual kinds of situations. So, for example, you know, in the pre covert time there was there were efforts to You know, even if you're you should've at an accident scene and someone had a lot of trauma and their heart had stopped and there was no pulse. They would still transport that person to the hospital. Now the county's saying we don't we can't do that anymore. They have such a limited. Ability to survive and the hospital's already so full of other patients that we're not going to transport that particular patient over another issue. That's a big concern is the lack of oxygen there. There's such a demand for oxygen that the pipes are freezing, and sometimes there's such a demand that the air pressure is running low. So the Army Corps of Engineers was called in to help a number of hospitals retrofit there. Their systems to get those auction places you know, running up and running. However, it's also caused. You know the count to say, you know what for For patients, you know, in ambulances that are receiving oxygen. You really got a limited so don't give it to people unless you really need to give it to them. Well, I know wrong it when you look at the numbers again, you're just gobsmacked. It took nine months to get to 400,000 covert positive cases in L. A county. It took about a month for that, too double. And you know, I I suspect from the holidays, Thanksgiving and now Christmas, we're going to see even higher numbers. Um The only thing we can do is just Hope and pray and obviously keep reporting. What's going on the reality of what's happening in our county and are in our state wrong. Gong Lynn, staff writer with the L A times wrong Thank you so much. Thanks for having me. This is greater l A on KCRW. Happy New Year. I'm Steve to take us now on the Orange County..

Bobcat Fire in continues to spread at 3% containment in Los Angeles area, evacuation orders issued

"Fire crews continue to battle the bobcat fire in the Angeles National Forest. It looks like they'll be in for a long night. The Southern fire remains at 3% containment and it's flared up in multiple areas, Officials say strong winds are pushing the more than 50,000 acre fire in several directions. Crews have been working hard to protect landmarks and numerous saying Gabriel Foothill communities. They were able to successfully pushback flames from the historic Mount Wilson Observatory last night. But the fight is far from over. Many residents are under evacuation orders and part of the Antelope Valley. Thousands more remain under evacuation warnings in the San Gabriel Valley. Mandatory orders were lifted in some parts of the Sierra Madre and Arcadia residents are still on high alert. My car's been packed facing outward, not in the garage that was Sierra Madre resident and Palmer speaking to Kate. She says. "Or those of you who are foodies and I know if you don't consider yourself a food, do you like food? Some of our most popular episodes are when we bring on people who own restaurants or who are chefs and my guest today. Is kind of a combination. She's not a chef. She's married to a chef. This is Susan g young park, and she and her husband are the owners of a very unusual Taco place near the campus is called. I think I'm saying this right Revolucionario? Is that correct? Yes, it's a revolutionary on North African Tacos on. At one, four, three, six, West Jefferson, boulevard currently were only open on weekends, Saturdays, and Sundays for pick up orders only from noon till three, and actually I am a chef to learn more. Oh okay. Okay. Yeah. Well, you know, I definitely want to do a deep dive. Into, your establishment. But you know since we're recording this in early May and is still during the whole shutdown, and this is a restaurant I gotta ask you because we'll put this out relatively soon. This episode I have to ask you like, how has it been for you guys with the shutdown with the limited time that you're open. How's that going? It's been very, very asymmetric call. Because I also have. Started a nonprofit at the end of February and a lot of people keep asking me how I knew to start early with the Asian. American. Specific food. Bank. It's because I am an Asian American person. Who? WHO also owns also Asian American owner. And I. My restaurant is near USC SO I. Get to talk to a lot of. Asian, American, and Asian international students. So my restaurant very community driven. So. As an Asian American person business owner and somebody who speaks to Asian American students in Asian international students on a regular basis. You know I could feel the of sacks of you know, the the Wuhan Virus China virus. Right one international news broke in in December, and I can feel it affecting my business to I can feel it affecting my business, my in store business just tanked. I made it by with a lot of lot of catering more because they kept asking my customers helped me out catering orders than. And then a lot of a Chinese American students in particular in Chinese. International. Students who come to my restaurant. Started telling me. They just felt really anxious and they had a feeling of like just more isolated, and also I also do a lot of tenants advocacy work I've been in touch with CCD in. Chinatown. MOM since last year I helped him out occasionally with things at the request as I could see for myself, I mean. Koreatown didn't get hit that bad. Early, a chinatown business in Chinatown just tanked. You know at in December and January some restaurants. It was like ninety nine percent down the streets were empty. There's nobody. And then my friends from the San Gabriel Valley started reporting. The business was down in the San Gabriel Valley. And then it rolled into Korea town. So Koreatown was hit a little bit later. By declining sales and then in my restaurant to. So January usually means like a huge surge in business. And a lot of my customers are international students, not as Asian international students, but international students because my husband is also he's a French born Algerian Berber and Berbers indigent people to North Africa. So we also have a lot of European customers in African customers, and because we're North African Taco restaurant, we also have a lot of Mexican Latin next customers so very international. We hear a lot of news from everybody to because we're, I'm a owner operators on that restaurant every day that it's open. So I'm in touch with just. So many different communities. And just business was just was not picking up and beginning in January I started. Reducing, my restaurant hours drastically because it just wasn't worth it. It just wasn't worth it to old. You know just to get all that going and it was like this is not what any you know So then I started my food bank initiative I started I started my bag initiative before a stylish on nonprofit. Net Song early I. Think I met her Nebi. Rarity. A month after I had started my brown bags for all skid row initiative. Because wins, virus news broke of a mysterious virus mysterious You know that's a scare scare tactic. In China and it's highly infectious in know we live in a global village? and. Experts have been warning about pandemics for a long time and America wouldn't be prepared for one. So my first thought in January was to start my Brown Dad's for everyone initiative for skid row because in an era of pandemic, who do you want to help the most? I, I mean, who should you be healthy? It's the most vulnerable people were most exposed. Then it's going to be homeless in the House to people. And who are the poorest of the poor, the an housed I mean, it's the black residents. Elderly residents are skip Vo. So I, the Brown. Doctrines, round that for everyone initiative really took off fast because the idea was catchy. People could wrap their mind around like Paquito, Brown bag lunch. You know. So I, had neighborhood associations like four hundred members hanging. Why? Why can't all of us do like ten Brown bags? That's four thousand bomb. Gad's already

Day, and you know my mother still lives in the house. I grew up in so whenever I come to La I always wind up going there, of course. Did you like growing up in L. A.? Did you like growing up La Puente? Was it a cool place to grow up, I, did not. Bad at my mother for moving to Los Angeles for years I, really? How's it against her? My poor mom, she's a single mom, and she's from south India and so she couldn't take the cold. And you know expensive to live in Manhattan, and so I understand as an adult, and as a parent all the reasons that she, of course you know moved us across the country as a child, it just seemed hugely inconvenient and down because in new. York I was much more independent because everybody walks, and you're in a very densely populated metropolitan area in Los Angeles says you buy as no like there's no center. There's no downtown in especially in La Pointe Day I was in a suburb and you need a car to get. In so, I felt like my independence was with stifled drastically, just moving cities, and then I was also I was in La Pointe Day I wasn't in like Sherman oaks or something. So you know in the eighties. When I was in high school, there were a lot of gangs in la, Puente and other than South Central. La It was a very seriously dangerous place we had. Had, Mexican. Gangs. We had a lot of Tolo and SCHOLLA's. And some of them are friends, but some of them also bullied me, and so I had my little conclave of friends who were mostly Filipino because our school did have a lot of Mexicans a lot of Filipinos lot of African Americans probably the most Mexican, and also Caucasian, but from my freshman year my senior. Senior year, you could really see the population of the schools you much more ethnic, in Brown and so I found it hard. You know because I'm Indian, and my skin is Brown on face value you could think I was Mexican may be, but then once I opened. My Mount was obvious and I don't think they were enough Indians at my school for anybody to form any. Any kind of opinion about me except other you know actually I'm curious. You mentioned that you were not super happy about the move to La for a while, not happy that your mom made that move and of course. That's a huge move from New York. New York is a huge move from India. Where much of your family is? When did you and how did you? come to understand your mom's journey and your mom's reasons for moving both of you so far well I understand that those moves were born of necessity. I understood why she didn't feel totally comfortable in New York, but I'm different than my mother, you know my my mother is is not as curious about being in the world, and just traveling and bumping up against other people, whereas that's all I wanNA do. You, know so I knew very very early on even when I was four that the reason we were leaving India is because it was very taboo for my mom to be a divorce. A divorce just didn't happen in Indian culture in growing up and going back to India I still don't know I know one person in India. WHO's divorced? You know, and so I knew that we were leaving to have a better life, you know. My mother left when I was two and I lived with my grandparents, and I didn't see my dad so I had no recollection of my real father I didn't even know what his face looks like. Because they had ripped up all the pictures so from two to four. I didn't see either of my parents so I literally was so excited to come to America, because America to me, meant being reunited with my mom.
