"Navy game. Now, here's your host. Adam Copeland on KNB are sixty the sports leader back here in Philadelphia. Adam Copeland Bryan benefit to to my right here. Ahead of the army navy game in Philadelphia Pennsylvania wicked financial field. We're joined here now by like Philadelphia's favorites on I think that comes from rocky movies up to like, that's okay. I'll take. All right. Adamawa care. What you call me? Just call me. Holly invincible, you know, the the Disney movie, of course. Yeah. I made where we're Mark wall. Or maybe we'll start that. Right. Okay. Where everybody generally probably wants to start with you. You joined the eagles in nineteen seventy six after an open tryout. They tell that story. Sure it was right around the corner. Actually, it was on the same property where the army navy game used to be held. That's that tryout was now it's at the lake, of course. But it used to be municipal stadium where I used to go to the army navy game. And I was a kid. I remember job Lino and Roger Staubach and all those guys back in that day. But here it is not one thousand nine hundred seventy six I'm working full-time schoolteacher for six years and my alma mater track. Coach assistant football coach working on my master's degree and thirty didn't play college football, and I had a shot in the world football league. And I'm wanting to leave of absence now because the league folded, and I'm just bartending substitute to actually played somewhat professionals. Yeah. We didn't take it back. All that for you know, and I have no I have nothing to hide with that. Because it wasn't the NFL. And and I did have to beat out four or five hundred guy wind up in the NFL. So I Don I don't I don't have any problems with that. Anyway. So I'm I'm just trying to make ends meet. You know, I was I was big time football player in the world football league where the new Datsun two ABC wanted. These thing. Dick, reveal hasn't free agent tryout in great shape, and I never lost. You know, I always Zoe's training because I was a decathlete prior to that, you know, so I never got out of shape, and then when the trial came and there was a couple of weeks ago, and I grabbed a kid I used to coach is a quarterback. And we started training in the morning. He would be thrown me all the time. And I knew what to workouts. I knew how to get myself in shape because being a coach attract coach, I could get myself in shape, and I used to run all the workout. So anyway, so I came into this trial. Tremendous condition of the first thing they did was Papa forty. I did four or five on grass and looked at it. That's trauma to another trail. And I got into the next real. And it was really cool because my father was there in this hundred thousand seat stadium where the army navy game used to be played. And I'm there living out my dream and in that day, they signed me to twenty one thousand dollar contract. Vince pally is the is the voice you hear what Philadelphia's favorites. We're talking here about how he got to the NFL and the open trial down for meal is being its effort sister. We had of course addict for millman Alvin meal, his his strength training coach Ryan forty nine years and storied career in the bay area as well. So what was that? I mean getting out to an open try out like that. No one in the movie depicted. It's like every guy from every corner every eagles fan in Philadelphia has showed up to this tryout to try to get a spot on eagles. Is that what it was like how much how much nudging did it take? Yeah, they had some. But most of them were pretty good athletes. You know, guys were really serious about it. But you had a few. You know, it was really cool is that I I showed up late for for the tryout not not because I was late. But when I got into the stadium they actually took us down into the eagles locker room and imagine I'm a season ticket holder. Now diehard fan. I'm a big fan of I'm walking around there. I'm seeing Bill Burgi how Carmichael you know, Roman. Gabriel was part of our quarterbacks back there. And I'm like an all of the whole thing and everybody else is going out over to the other stadium for the tryout. And I couldn't find my I oh my God. They're all gone. And then 'cause I what I did is I made the mistake of going through one door into the other and I wound up under the Phillies locker room, and I'm looking around. Here's Mike Schmidt. Steve carlton. Get back into the eagles walk draw gone. And I couldn't find I couldn't get out of the vet because it was a subterranean field. And and so Finally, I get the elevator. I've run up to ramps, and I'm sprinting across the spectrum where the flyers and Sixers played screech into their and they're already stretching and coach from meal notes Eighty-three, you're a little late is I sorry coach, but he knew the eighty three and then the Eighty-three pop, and I was so upset, and then my father, I could hear my father understands fence, you can do it, and I look up and there's my daddy took a day off from work at Westinghouse like he can afford that. At the watch me try out to be there to support me my dad down. And so then you know, it puts me in one drill and another trail on and then it became rough touch because I was playing those rough touch leagues. Just like in the movie, and it was like, hey, man, I can do this. And then the guys trying to take my head off and just ripped him and coach liked it. And we didn't we had that conversation as in the movie, but we had it in the elevator. I finally knew how to get down to the field court. Right. The. Karate fans. Yeah. Veteran stadium. They will just wheel you right down and put you on trial. The judge is big Harley Harley there. Sony affiliate right out right out of central casting. Yeah. I mean that was a real conversation. Yeah. So what was I mean, like, what are some of the key differences because you're sitting there you're watching this movie, we were joking earlier. Like, I mean, they come to you. They say we got Walberg Marky Mark's going gonna play. Trip. Everybody going to be Danny devito. I Hugh Jackman. Would it be? Bradley Cooper because he's a Philly guy. And he was thirty thirty years old when the mood now. Yes. So the movies, but now thirteen years he was thirty twenty eight and I have a picture of him back. Then he was ripped you know, and he's still rip. But Bradley Cooper would have been not naive, but it turned out to be Mark. And Mark, and I worked out together you remember there used to be paid for the dolphins named Jim Janson Jim slash gentian. Jetson the original H back. Now, they call them, whatever they call the wildcat. But Jim was that guy and we trained more for two weeks at a local high school field that ironically, my wife went to high school they are northeast high school. So I know what that question is. What were some of the big difference? Well, the one is is that I was a time school teacher and coach not to part. They picked it up. You know, after the Philadelphia bell thing part-time bartending, we needed the NFL's endorsement for branding. And so what we decided to do is we compromised on the woman who was portrayed as my love interest. Who is now my wife of twenty five years. With two beautiful children, son daughter Gabby and Vinnie's just regret wide receiver at university. Of course. Yeah. So an Eddie rate. Where are we going to talk about your is your love? Oh, yeah. So here it is a big love interest. So they portrayed her as a giants fan. The NFL the giants fan at a part time bartender because they wanted to create conflicts Dory. And it was pretty cool. You know, what really played wells acord. It's called the play, and it paid well in the movie, it was a good stick Janet in reality was on a USA gymnastics team on that same team that was in the Olympics in Munich. She didn't make she didn't go to Munich because of an injury, but she did compete in the world games, and she's traveled. He coached over the world and started gymnastics program, but university of Pennsylvania, Elizabeth banks nailed it. She and Janet are so much like they look so much alike. If you if you Google them up in your see, I mean, they look just like each other back, then when they were twenty two twenty three and the irony is Elizabeth was at the university of Pennsylvania as a student when my wife Janet was coaching their gymnastics and and also doing that. So that was a big change. And then the other thing is a mess around with a few timelines and stuff like that. But what we really wanted him to do was to captured attorney and. Show people how difficult it is. When people say it can't be done. You know, you just outworked everybody else in, you know, keep your mouth shut slam a few people down and let it go was true. You know, I used to sprint downfield all the time. And those guys often that went, and I did another thing. Not a block below the waist then and they did not like that. Because they felt they're entitled territory. So you don't want to get hit. Stay just stay out of my way. And I'll whistle at you. As I'm coming down. I'm gonna hit you. But just stay out of my way, because I'm going to hit, you know. Then what happened? What this is really interesting. I don't know if your time, but I was killing these guys in the first two weeks of practice, and then the veterans came in, and there was a noticeable drop in my going and doing that to these guys coach said why'd you do that. I said, well, they're like idols, I'm not season ticket holder coach, I don't know if you know that not want to hurt. I don't want to hurt my guys. He said them last year. They only one three or four games there your idols. Yeah. He said either get your head out of your know what? Or I'm going to give you two weeks. I'm vinnie. I'm going to give you two weeks. He said you got two weeks to to show me what you got with the veterans there because he really wanted me to make the team. He was my number one guy, and I showed him and then went on with eating detainment receptions in that preseason and wound up, you know, as I say the rest of the system we're talking offense Potala here on today. Tell us the story of the the invincible movie and your journey career into the NFL. Now, you're Philadelphia guy here in the city of Philo, just in the suburbs. I'm they're adopted this year and adopted said, okay. So tell us about I mean, you just mentioned you went to six or seven army navy games. I mean, this this weekend here is the I mean, it doesn't matter what these teams have done. Like, what does this mean to the fabric of Philadelphia? What does it mean? He was a kid. I mean, it feels like everybody here is on board with this. I'm very proud of the city. Philadelphia is their adopted son or whatever, and I I've several properties here. My daughter lives, right right around the corner from here. I've got a lot of properties right around here. I own and I'm a Philadelphian. Now, you know, and we're just so proud of it. You know, what it's done and how showcase start city. It's going to be a beautiful weekend today spectacular it's sunny, and you know, it's it's supposed to be a little chilly, but it's all right, and it just showcases not just not just the army and the navy, but it showcases the city of Philadelphia, which we're very proud of. And everybody's on their best behavior for this to all the big shots coming in. But tonight in Philadelphia on Friday night, the city is going to be on fire. It's Phillies like Boston. It's walking town. Oh, San France. Spread out. You know, you've got your. But right here it's a walking town. And you're going to see men and women of all the all the services, the armed services altogether. As one that's going to be some jovial joking. I'm going to be at a great gale tonight. I was one last night for Travis Manion foundation. I'm going to be tonight with a bunch of navy seals. I mean, it's just going to be insane. Ed buyers is going to be there the medal of honor winner I had an opportunity to be with him a couple of weeks ago. So I'm really looking forward to it. So for us, and you know, it's the party's it's the galas, but more than anything is the United States coming together as one politics aside race, gender, all the bull. That's going on right now. It's all thrown aside. And we're all as one USA, and you know, they're just going to battle it out. And there not going to be one ounce of sweat. That's not going to be left on the field. I mean, they're going to give it everything they have. And it's a beautiful thing. Yeah. USA is that a great job? Putting this thing on offense. Propelling the voice you hear you. Tell us about your new book this real excited that lasts less efficient. The victory is a book about it. Just people saying that it can't be done. It's a how to reach your full potential Denny Franks and Dennis Franks. My teammate roommate buddy for forty years, we got together and collaborated on a on a picture that's in the hall of fame. And it's pro football hall of fame called the last laugh I made a big hit against. The skins and Denny recovered the fumble we're on the sideline putting your arms around each other talking about where we're gonna party that night office. Said the photo there. It is looking at the whole thing. And so we said, let's write a book about it. And we created a what we call it a a code victories code from vision. The victory we throw vitality vigor route veracity and some other stuff in there. And and that's how it worked out. And we have we have great, athletes and entrepreneurs and artists, and whatever that are telling their story through our code, and it's just a fun way. Hey, man, if you're in a rut, you're not feel good about yourself where you want to feel. I just wanna feel good just pick it up. Go to any chapter. It doesn't make a difference. "That's amazing i can't imagine doing that you just don't have you might it might take you three times along to do that and and if you can fight for that you can get that budget that's amazing and again because this film is something where he starts at one place goes away and comes back and of course you're gonna film that location at the same time what that means is that not only do you have the efficiency consideration but you also have the performance consideration and there are some versions of the schedule that are gonna be better for performances because you're able to sort of build up in the schedule to this emotional scene and film that later and then there are some scenes where you just have to jump right to it and is seen late in the movie that's really emotional and everybody's trying to guess what the they would have gone through to get to this point i mean famously that that lion dental i think the first scene in that movie they shot i was listening was the emotional scene where he comes back and meets his mother and that was the first day of shooting i can't imagine that you know so you heard about plenty off like love stories where the actors might not even really know each other real life but their biggest romantic love scene is shot in the first tricky exactly i mean that's one of the fascinating things for some of these stories is not only something like fish tank or american honey being shot entirely in order but something that like derek san france did with blue valentine where he would have ryan gosling in the show williams and have them spend time with each other living in a house like a real relationship and just the things that you can go beyond this sort of default shooting schedule in order in order to to reach a new level but on your on your first feature generally hard to do that and it's just really working closely with the ad to try to say okay this is great and this is really efficient but i can't imagine shooting that scene at that part of the schedule is there a way for us to to reject this over there so that we're shooting to be better performance and so on and so forth but.
