"Absolutely right. Anyway, entirely, well, not entirely unrelated to this, but a sort of quite a big step on is the adjective scruffy less. Which means not disfigured by scrofulous east means, but somebody who is morally corrupt. So it's always cast to sort of pretty horrible shadow, which is, you know, not particularly nice, but useful to know that exists if anybody needed it. And I'm just going to go for a lost positive for my last one, which is sip it. Do we always talk about something being insipid? And it's lacking in taste and bland. Sip it means of pleasing taste flavor or character. Oh, I think it's a lovely word. I'm going to bring that into my vocabulary. That's very sipping. I'm having soup at lunch today. The soup don't you agree? Excellent. And I hope it will be super lovely. Good, I hope so too. What about your poem for us today? I've been thinking about what poem to read next week because it's our 200th and so I've been looking at lots of poems about poetry thinking maybe that which I should do. And I came across this very amusing poem by Wendy cope, which is an attempt at un rhymed verse. People tell you all the time. Poems do not have to rhyme. It's often better if they don't. And I'm determined this one won't. Oh dear. Never mind, I'll start again. Busy busy with my pen. So I can do it if I try easy peasy pudding and gherkins. Writing verse is so much fun cheering as the summer weather. Makes you feel alert and bright, especially when you get it more or less the way you want it. It's amazing. That's very good. Yeah, she's great. Well, you're brilliant. And it's brilliant as always having your company Susie dent. So if people like the show, I do please continue to follow us any way

"Origin of dudgeon and how could we use it in the present day? And if we did use it, must it always be with its friend hi? Thank you for your help and the wonderful podcast. Jonathan trace and Abigail Thomas. Oh, I love the Thomas family, and I think it's a really intriguing question. Tell us about dudgeon, why it's usually high dudgeon. Yes, I'm going to absolutely disappoint you here, Jonathan, and Giles, because we don't know where dudgeon comes from. It's unknown, listed as unknown in every dictionary that I consult. What we are supposed we do know is that it's a linguistic fossil, really. Do you remember we talked about this? Because it exists really only in the phrase in high dudgeon today. So dungeon has always meant indignation or umbrage if you like and remember umbridge comes from the Latin Umbra meaning shade. So to throw umbrage was the original version of throwing shade. But there is another kind of dudgeon which is a wood used to make knife handles and I think we've talked about this before, but we don't think it's linked to being in high dudgeon. It is normally high these days, Jonathan, but you can use it simply as inner dudgeon in a state or fit of indignation, or as an adjective too, meaning indignant or resentful. But I'm afraid, as to where it comes from, we just don't know. First recorded in the 16th century, it's a mystery. Well, there you are. Some things in life that aren't a mystery. There are so many questions that come up regularly that you are constantly being asked what you are going to have this new thing. Susie's big hitters, because we want to do is, hey, we got a long list of them, and we need to make a dent. In your big hitters. So this is the moment in the podcast where, as we approach our 200th episode, we're going to dip into the Susie saurus. Why do we butter someone up? Well, the most obvious explanation for the metaphor is that butter is sort of smooth and slightly unctuous.

"And if she is, do get in touch. I say do get in touch. She was about 17 and I was 18 at the time. So perhaps don't get in touch now, because we're not 17 and 18 anymore. She was called. Kim de la rosa. My goodness. And the mother remember that was called rusty de la rosa. Isn't that extraordinary? I have not thought that is amazing that you can. Do you know everything we've ever remembered is in the head? It just needs something to take it to the top. I have not thought about those two people in possibly well, certainly more than half a century. That is incredible. While we're on surfing, by the way, I know a lot and lots of lost purple people will be hopefully nodding along with me or just saying this is very obvious, but best surfing film ever is point break. Have you ever seen it? No. With Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves, it is astonishing movie. It's very good. We ought to know about it. Oh my goodness, it's a whole surfing language that we can, I don't know, skim the surface of a dream of a wave, which of course is what you want. It can be gnarly, it could be beast chocolate, rad, sick, this is where we get sick from as a positive adjective from surface slang. Harsh killer cooking smoking going off insane and of course totally awesome or radical dude. I'll give you forgive me, are these phrases that genuinely begin in the world of surfing and end up in our lifetime today? Yes. Cool speak. And so they then come over to us eventually. Like always, there are a sort of slightly mocking epithets for people who aren't particularly good on their board, which would be me. So a Barney is a complete beginner. That's fine. A fruit is a surface. It doesn't catch away for the entire time they're in the water. A paddle puss is someone who stays in the water close to the beach. That would be me as well. A beach bleach is a surfer who always turns out without a board and asked to borrow somebody else's. And possibly this would be me too, a shubi is somebody who buys all the gear, including a board but never actually goes in the water. And finally, I mean, a wax head is a real surfing enthusiast. And a hot dog are apparently a really cool and expert one. But one that I particularly like was a Melvin, and we never know who the original Melvin was, but it was the suffer whose shorts have rigged up the bottom very noticeably. Oh, dear. I don't like the idea of a melding. I'm averting my gaze. This is wonderful, the world. Oh my goodness. I mean, we don't have time to talk about all the moves as well. So you grab your wetti, which is wetsuit, and your leggy, which is the leash that attaches to the board. And then you drop in, if you catch your wave, you hit the lip, you shoot the curl, you take the back door if you enter the barrel of a wave behind its peak, a shack a can is ripping really hard, you do a fakey. I mean, a lot of these are also on them skateboards as well.

Thank you for being here today, but to be with us on the 31st of January, that's next week. It will be our 200th episode. Can you imagine it 200 episodes is event? It's astonishing. I mean, I remember so many times sitting in my little front room with Lawrence, a wonderful producer at the time getting very cross about the crackling of my open fire because it interfered with the noise. And we quite liked it, didn't we? And all that, and then sitting in my kitchen all those days and then during lockdown, obviously, you know, talking to each other remotely. Yeah, it's sort of marked out quite a lot of the history of the last couple of years, really. Totally. And what for me is different between a podcast and a formal radio production is the intimacy, the informality of the fact that it is just you and me getting together and stumbling and fumbling our way through the world of words. Anyway. That's next week on 200th birthday. Please join us today. We're traveling across America with in California now. Los Angeles, I love for all sorts of reasons. Family reasons because of my mother living in California, knowing Los Angeles well. Eventually ending up in la Jolla. But also because I have friends who live in Hollywood, including British friends, my good friend, Martin Jarvis, and his brilliant wife, the actress Rosalind heirs, they live in Hollywood. But Hollywood, Hollywood was always, it's called Hollywood. That's now genetic term, meaning rather like fleet street means journalism. Hollywood means cinema. What's the origin of that? Cinema or Hollywood itself? Hollywood itself. Well, I think it was named by a woman who donated land in to help the development of Hollywood. And she just said I chose it because it sounds nice and because I'm superstitious and Holly brings good luck. Which is quite nice, isn't it? But she named it just as a district of Los Angeles. She named it as a district, but I think even then there were plans to, well, I don't actually know. I'm not sure about purple people will know this, but I'm not sure how soon the motion picture industry was mooted.

"It was a real gentle. I never met Frank mill. He lived a great old age. Frank mill was a very sweet person. It was very kind to me. And I knew him and his wife Polly and they sort of befriended me when I was still at university. And he gave me Frank Muir gave me my first job proper job on television. So they were amazing. They were good people. So we go south from San Francisco through California, where is Alcatraz? That's off the coast there. I should know because I've been. Yes, Alcatraz has got quite a history, isn't it? It's an island where there's a prison. It is a lion. And it's offshore from San Francisco. And it was developed in the mid 19th century for what had a lighthouse and a military prison and then the 30s, 1930s, it was converted into a federal prison, and that was because the sea is incredibly cold around it. And also have very strong currents. So it made escape nearly impossible. And it's one of the most notorious ever, isn't it? But it closed in the 60s and is now a tourist attraction, which is probably why you and I went to see it. And it's so named from the pelicans. It comes from the Spanish for pelicans because of the pelicans that used to inhabit the island. We're leaving Alcatraz, we're going further south down California to stop in Los Angeles. Los Angeles are the angels. Is that why it's called lozenges? The angels, yes. And I think at some point, there was a debate as to whether it should be lost Angeles, as opposed to Los Angeles, and I think it should have gone back and forth, but Los Angeles is now definitely the most common. And in the 17 70, I think a Franciscan friar built or directed the building of the mission Stan Gabriel, sorry, my Spanish is not particularly good, but that was the first mission in the area. And then the town around it was called the town of our lady, the Queen of the angels. So that's where it comes from. I don't really know Los Angeles at all.

"On the committee overseeing the legislation. So I felt obliged to take part. I think tell me that you want something. I want to die. Do you know what? I don't need quite how this worked. But so many people tell exactly the same story. It was a promise that the same with me, I won ten pounds, the very first officer I think that's the only time I've won. How does this happen? Well, do you think it was done specially? They thought let's give a lot of money away this week. Yeah, but it can't. Because statistically, well, it's random for a start. And I've come across loads of people who want something more intriguing we need a status issue. The word gamble itself, where does that come from? Yes. So at the heart of gamble is game, really. So it is to have to remember that it comes from a very old word meaning gaming, which makes perfect sense. And of course, you gamble in a casino. And of course, completely associated with gambling now, but originally it was just a public room. It actually goes back to a little house from the Latin kaza meaning a cottage, so it's a little house, but it was a public room and it was used for dancing, and it was used for music. So it's actually linked to chalet as well. But of course, then the gambling aspect of it completely took over. You mentioning a little house reminds me that I still have a wedding booking at something called. I think the little church on the something where I believe Elvis Presley got married once. I don't know the times he was married, but there is a place where Elvis Presley got married. It's called the little church of the something or other. And I must take this. Well, this is the little church on the strip. Okay. But it's like a little. I mean, I've seen the pictures of it. One of my daughters, when she was getting married for the first time, a few years ago now, wanted to get married in she was torn about where she should get married. One day it was going to be St Paul's Cathedral. The next day it was going to be the little church anyway, this little church and Las Vegas. So I got online, and I made a booking. And you had to play a pair deposit, which I did. And then she changed her mind about the wedding and about everything. Exactly. The point is I couldn't get my money back. They said, it's open. Any time for the rest of your life for you or your wife, if you wish to get married again, it's what it's not actually for us is for my dad.

"I went to Las Vegas. I'm sure I've told you this story. When I was, I think about 12 or 13 on a family trip to the West Coast. And because I was so young, I had to sit where we had to sit on a particular side of the restaurant. So there was an invisible line in the restaurant. On one side, there were slot machines and on the other there weren't. And because of gambling laws, we had to sit in the bit that weren't. But going to the Lou and this is the better I remember telling you, there was a slot machines in the loo. So there were people playing in the loop. That's how focused it is. I remember there was a prison outbreak and it was about 40° and the hotel was freezing as a result with the air conditioning. So those are my memories, which thrown in a prison outbreak. Yes, well, I remember this sirens. Goodness. Yes, there's a prick well, again, the purple people will know, but there's a prison on the outskirts. And I think there have been an outbreak. So those are the sort of memories, but they're a little bit blurry now. We did go to San Francisco, which I adored. Very brief trip to LA, but yeah. At the time, I wasn't a word Maven as such or as much as I am now, so. The language is new. Word Maven MAV. Meaning what? A Maven is a real sort of enthusiast or expert really, and it comes from a Hebrew word meaning a person with understanding or a teacher. And it doesn't need to be a female. You're still. So a Maven is an enthusiast and somebody who understands, well, you certainly understand words and language. Las Vegas is regarded, I suppose, as the gambling capital of the world, it's located in the arid. Is it miyavi? Is that how you pronounce the name of the desert? Yes.

"Welcome to something rhymes with purple, my name is Charles Brown rook and I'm speaking to you from London, England, with my co host and friend susy dent who is in Oxford, England. How are you today, Susie? I'm fine. Thank you very much to us. So it is very outside. I have to say, there's no other word for it. Drake is a Scottish word? Yes. Yeah, Scottish word meaning sort of wet. Gloomy and overcast and altogether a bit blur. It's a bit bleak. Well, I'm going to be taking you to the sunshine state in a moment. We're going over to America. We're going in search of sunshine. And in search of words, language that we find interesting, amusing, arresting, controversial, and the origins of some of those words. If you're new to our podcast, a warm welcome, we call it something rhymes with purple because when we started it almost 200 episodes ago, I thought nothing rhymed with purple. I thought purple was a word like silver or orange for which there was no rhyme. But in fact, there are several words, Susie told me that rhyme with purple, one of which the first one who came up with was her, I think. Apple to walk with a limp purple, which is part of a horse's rump, and something does rhyme with silver Giles. If you remember milva, which is somebody who shares a strong interest in a particular topic, especially words and wordplay. So we should have called it something where silver really, because it would have been more appropriate. Well, and you mentioning wordplay, we must come up with an episode soon where we play some word games because I love word games and word puzzles and I know you very sweetly have been taking part in my new daily anagram game full rainbow. People can go online just full rainbow dot co dot UK and it's a daily 7 letter anagram. Some people do it instantly and other people like our brilliant producer Harriet just find unless the letters are written in a circle she can't unravel the anagram quickly and is often stumped and ends up with a rain boo instead of a rainbow. It is quite tricky. Have you always been going to nanograms? No, not at all. I think it's definitely a muscle in the brain that you need to exercise regularly. And I still have days on camp down where, you know, that particular muscle is barely tense. I just can't get very much at all. Thankfully, you don't happen very often, but I definitely am very, very valuable. I love the way you can take the word anagrams, rearrange the letters into the Latin phrase, ours, Magna, the great art, playing with letters. Anyway, that's for another day. We're not playing games today. We're going to America. And we've been on a bit of a trip. This is the fourth leg of our journey across America. Why do we call it a leg, by the way? Why is it, I suppose, because you're lagging it, you're moving on. Is that why it's called a leg? No, not really. It's actually different from a nautical use of the terms. In the early 17th century, a leg was a short rope and crucially it branched out into two parts. It could be more parts, but it's usually too. So they look like two limbs. So it was part of the rigging on board a ship, and then, of course, because you used the ship for transport.

"AFC? I got the Buffalo Bills. I mean, you look at Josh Allen, you look at this team and where they were a year ago, the last game that they played, they possibly could have wanted if the rules were a little bit different. So they're gonna be a motivated team. They're loaded, you go and you get von Miller, they're gonna have a pass rush. He's gonna be motivated to keep it going. So again, I think the Buffalo Bills are gonna be the team to get it done in the AFC. All right, Nick, you really went out on a limb there, but I agree with you. So I'll go out on the limb with you. Come on. Kids, it's your turn. Who do you have one in the NFC? Did you really just ask me that Lauren? Come on, now you know I'm taking a New Orleans Saints why wouldn't I? I understand this question in March about Jameis Winston. I understand this question marks about Michael Thomas. I understand this question box about Camara. There's question marks about langi. Not to me, not to me at all. I know what they're capable of doing. Dennis Allen's been there. He understands what they need to do cultural wise when you look at Pete Carmichael calling the offense. He was under champagne his entire tenure in New Orleans, nothing changes at all. And I said it's the people all the time when they mentioned Dennis Allen and his failures with the Oakland Raiders. This Lombardi couldn't win with that team in the Oakland raiders. So imagine what he has now at his disposal in New Orleans. Who that nation? One key. Wow. You're leaning in hard on it. I like it. Listen, the saints obviously believe they're going to be really good. And I am excited to see all those receivers in that offense, see Jameis Winston healthy. Okay, after an off season of negotiations, the ravens and levar Jackson still have not come to turns on an extension for their star. Adam Schefter has the latest on the charm city quarterback. And Coors light made to chill. This new on NFL live, it's being reported that Jason Peters on his way to potentially visit with the cowboys, according to sources, and memories 40, he started 15 games last year with the Chicago Bears, of course, a reminder that tyron Smith out until at least December with the hamstring that essentially tore off the bone. So maybe some help on the way there with a veteran offensive tackle and Jason Peters scheduled to visit in Dallas. Let's get to Lamar Jackson reminder that the ravens and Jackson still did not have a contract extension in place, he said, they'll no longer negotiate once the season begins, the hope was to reach a deal before the regular season, but that's saving less likely unless something dramatic in progress is made soon. So the big sticking point of course for Lamar, the guaranteed money. Look at this right here. Lamar Jackson's got a slot in here somewhere. Deshaun Watson's guaranteed contract with the browns isn't just the top of the market, it's over 40 million more than anyone else. Everyone's like, why did you guys do that browns? Anyway, Kyler Murray, Aaron Rodgers, Josh Allen are the only other three making at least 150 million guaranteed. So how about this? Lamar recently responded to some fans on Twitter who were talking about the extension financials. This guy gray FGC said, so Lamar is still a league MVP still hadn't broke the bank, ravens, you're on the hot seat, give that man the 250 million guarantee before you write a check, you can't cash. Then William gets into the conversation, he responded with, quote, he wants more. They already offered that. Not sure where Williams getting his info, but Lamar responded, quote, no they didn't. All right, so Adam, make some sense out of all this. Where did the contract extensions talks between the bar and the Raven stand at the moment? Well, we now know what the ravens bolt with the Baltimore Ravens didn't offer thanks to Lamar Jackson. And I think when you look at this, you just have to look at the contract that the Cleveland Browns gave deshaun Watson, which is going to be a sticking point for the Baltimore Ravens and Lamar Jackson for the Los Angeles chargers and Justin Herbert for the Cincinnati Bengals and Joe burrow. When a quarterback cashes in, the way that watching does, it resets the market a little bit. And yes, there were different circumstances in many ways surrounding the deshaun Watson case, but other quarterbacks are going to notice and try to use those numbers, particularly that guaranteed money total to their advantage. And so as long as the ravens don't hit, they guaranteed money that Lamar Jackson is looking for, there won't be a deal and he's doing the deal himself. He has been doing the deal himself. So he has said that when the regular season begins, the negotiations will stop and he will get back to his day job of playing quarterback in the National Football League. So they haven't offered the full money right now, but that's where the sides are stuck. And if they have waited this long to try to get a deal done, it's hard to imagine that they're going to get a deal done now unless something changes to the equation. Yeah, Adam. I'm just sitting here as you're talking about him saying, oh, we're not going to talk about it anymore. I'm just going to go play football. No, you not. Listen to me, man. Negotiate all the way to the end. And if they don't give you what you are looking for, you know, there's a lot of islands you can go hang out a couple of weeks. Just remember they know what they look like with you, and they know what they look like without you. They know Huntley isn't the guy. Don't fall for the okey doke. That's all I'm saying. I'm not stepping on the football field, and I wouldn't advise him to step on the football field. There's no need to gamble in this situation. I'm just gonna assume they offered in the two somewhere. I don't know if it was two, two O 5, two ten, whatever it was, but you're getting close. Get closer to the point where you're safe, man. Don't gamble on it. Don't do it. You just can't do it. I hear you. Let me just play devil's advocate for a second here. You think Lamar knowing how he is and knowing his confidence in himself as a player he feels like he could go out and maybe have an exceptional year and make himself more money? Let me ask you this. Let me act, but last year was last year, Adam, we are now at a number in the 200s, two 30s for deshaun Watson. If he goes out there and he has an exceptional year like you say, Laura, where is he going? Is he going to two 70? Is he going to 300 fully guaranteed? Are you willing? I guess I'm going to ask you this, Laura, or you willing. If they had $210 million on the table, or you willing to pass that up. No. In go play for one more year to try to get the two 40, which is another $30 million. I'm never going to even sniff like even a fraction of that money. I'm not Lamar Jackson, but I can't say what he's going to do, but I do know how he thinks and how he bets on himself. Nick, go ahead. Key, we need you to be an agent, all right? Because I think listen, Lamar needs a voice of reason to come in and explain things because at the end of the day, you got to take the ego stuff of, I want to be the highest or

They can't none of them operate without maps. Correct? Yeah, you know, do you have this thought? I frequently have this thought. We travel so much. I love to travel. And I do too. I think the thing, I like to drive. I like to see the world with an automobile as my kind of method of transportation. Right. And in that very city in San Francisco, I remember decades ago, probably two decades ago, I had Microsoft had one of the first versions of mapping software that would integrate with the GPS, so you had real time kind of tracking of where you were and turn by turn directions. And I had a laptop that I would throw in the passenger seat of the rental car. And a little Bluetooth GPS module that I would throw on the dash, and I would let the I forget the name of the Microsoft maps product. But it wasn't MapQuest was. No, it was around that time, but it was like Microsoft maps or something, right? And I was literally driving around with that software running in the car. And back at that time, you know, you'd get like 45 minutes out of a laptop battery. So I had to like come up with clever ways to keep it. Because you can send traffic for 45 minutes in the Bay Area. Absolutely, you can. Anywhere. And now look, look where we've come, but my point is this. I, at that point, I would be with people and be like, dude, stop doing that. Just pull out the paper map, and I'd be like, no, no, no, this is great. It's gonna show me like, you know, and you know, I was, I was an early adopter at the expense of everyone else, having to put up with it. Could we even go back to maps now if we had to? Could people find their way? Well, you and I could, yeah. Yeah. Well, if, well, honestly, man, you bring up a valid point. It's a generational thing at this point. Because in fact, I will tell you how much of a generational thing that is. My father in law for Christmas as a Christmas gift gift gave to my wife and I, a brand new U.S. road Atlas. We're gonna pay people. Do not shoot people but i. i can't get healthcare. it's unbelievable. Wow i live in such backwards ass country. I'm gonna move to san francisco and just show them that. I'm a guys i haven't committed a crime. Can i get that five hundred bucks. How about that. This guy says there are successful. Examples of similar crime reducing initiatives in a pair of cities. Right across the bay. Escher in fact. He says a three hundred dollar. Monthly stipend has been a part of the city of oakland's ceasefire crime reduction strategy for the past eight years while they're pay people three hundred a month in oakland not fire off their gun. Wow hey so when anyone asked me. Why did you have a secretary josie. Here's why i live in a country where they're paying people to not open fire in public. That's what we need to do. You get at to actually give people a monthly stipend. So they don't kill which is going to pay off the active shooters guy. Mohammed says that a small financial incentive is connected to targeted goals. And it's a bargain. Yeah oh i see here. Well bobby you. You only killed one person this month so we are not eligible for the full three hundred. We're going to only give you one fifty. Ok you're gonna have to make that work okay. Try not to kill anybody next month. We'll give you the full amount. Oh yes. I'm in charge of shit. Hey my pillow weirdos. Thank you for being present. I'm nice and caffeinated for you today. "Housing complex. Rent hasn't changed since fifteen. Twenty one in san francisco may offer cash incentives for not shooting people. These are the weird stories for wednesday on weird af news the daily weird news podcast hosted by. You guessed it a comedian. Let's try to be funny and intoxicated. Individual was arrested after trying to direct traffic. This is out of the uk mid sussex neighborhood. Police inspector darren taylor say this arrest happened on monday evening. Darren is quoted as saying another rather intoxicated. Mail yesterday at eight thirty. Pm this chime in the cook field road area of how sucks. he decided. He wanted to try his hand at directing traffic in the middle of the road. Not appropriate when you're this intoxicated. He wasn't early directing traffic. In the proper flow. Many 'cause which just veering off and crashing into lampposts and whatnot. I'm kidding none of that happened. The sussex police say a man was arrested repeating the they added that the man ended up being arrested by the team for being quote journal gin disorder. Oh i don't know if. I got that accent. Correct by the way is that accurate for the sussex area of england. I know you have your little neighborhood accents. It's so adorable. And i know that i screw it up quite often because i'll get a message from someone from from that area that says jones e. That's not an appropriate accident for that area. And i feel like saying. Hey man i'm just. I'm just doing accents over here. I don't know why you you're expecting accuracy. Like i know nothing just trying to get a laugh. I love that this man got drunk and didn't fight you know didn't whip out his wang at a passing mother and daughter didn't throw up in a walmart parking lot after stealing pharmaceuticals from them. Like this guy just tried to give back to the community. Tried to help out. Like you know what i see a need. This intersection is a little ornery. Right it's kind of confusing and we hate those confusing intersections. They need a cop but some of them don't have a cop there. You're like there should be a police officer here. These lights are weird. The turns are weird. Or maybe it's a very confusing. Roundabout know those things can be tricky the roundabouts. I think you call them roundabouts in the uk. At least i got that right. Where i'm from new england. We call them rotaries which seems strange like a rotary foam. But i guess it makes sense roundabout. That's pretty cool. Yeah so this guy is just trying to give back to the community bring order where there is disorder. His heart is in the right place. Just you don't want to be directed by a drunk individual. Of course that's the end of the article by the way there's nothing else i got. I got so many more questions like. Did this guy used to be a traffic cop. And then when he gets tipsy he just kinda likes to slip into character again. Did anybody really crash. I need to know that someone must have crashed. Did they just not obey him at all. Like how did this go down. Is there video footage of this. I would love to see just a waste of dude. Stumbling in the middle of intersection like calling for a car. One way and also calling for car in the exact opposite direction. Everyone confused well. The things that people do when they're drunk and this is this is one. I have to say like i support. Might not not in this way but like this guy just wants to help you know. Just little misguided at the world's oldest social housing project rent hasn't changed since fifteen twenty one months before his eighteenth birthday noelle and his family fell on some hard times. You know that can be. Parents separated. mother was struggling to make ends meet. She announced the family was going to move into a place called the foo jerry. The fujeirah is the world's oldest social housing project. It's located in augsburg germany. Here's a quote from noel. Who doesn't look german. But i'm going to give him an accent anyways. Yes eva's like people people really live there. Are you show all that people live you. Show people live there. We really living. Noel is not twenty seven years old and he remains one of the youngest residents of this complex. The few jerry is a landmark in the city. Not only because it resembles a medieval village but also because the rent has not changed in over five hundred years the residents pay get this a dollar thirty per year for their apartments not per month per year. This is the equivalent of point. Eight eight euros for the year. This is outstanding. I just assumed that number was the month. I would pay that for the day to be be pleased to pay that. So they pay a dollar thirty per year for their apartments and they commit to daily spiritual reflection. It says which you don't need if your rent's only a dollar thirty you don't need. You certainly have a lot of time for that if your rents a dollar thirty. But you don't really need it. I need daily spiritual reflection because my rent is too damn high. I need therapy for that. I need the meditation time by the way. Donate to the patriot police. Roughly one hundred sixty residents live in the food jerry ranging from retirees with scant pensions to young adults priced out of an increasingly expensive city. Food the food. Jerry's located just an hour's drive from munich and apparently augsburg is in demand with commuters. Trying to escape germany's hottest rental market..

"Quake the doot of a Predator as a reporter. You get all kinds of of little suggestions. Tips complaints this. And you can't deal with them all. This one intrigued me. I had started to hear about similar complaints and sort of once. You hear enough of them the signal adds up you think. Maybe there's a story here. What was I seeing What what the clued that? That Mela rash well. I was a researcher myself. I was a faculty librarian at my university and I did. Research probably starting five six years ago I I was always looking for publishing opportunities. I started getting letters and I started to receive these emails. Sort of saying extremely nice. Nice things to me that basically said call for Paper Journal Editors Wanting Me To submit my manuscript to their journal and they had lots of grammatical errors in addition to that one and the emails and then generally speaking editor. I don't say very nice things about you and they don't typically they don't write to you and ask you to submit a manuscript. Will you ever tempted to meet. No no I mean I'm a clinical epidemiologist in some of these journals were lifted from soil. Science right why would somebody from soil science be asking me saying Nice things about me. They wouldn't no me from anywhere he's smells a rat. I did maybe several but that rash or several thousand read via now. Well and truly on the loose predatory publishes and the Predatory Journal has become a mega industry global in reach ending ending destructive potential. In fact you're going to hear from someone who believes that the industry represents the big threat to don in the inquisition shen the US. Federal Court recently ordered one of the biggest of the company to pay up over fifty million. US dollars only make. International headquartered voted in Hyderabad in India but also operating in the US climbed the publish hundreds of medical journals found to employ deceptive business practices essentially entrapping fantasy to offer published in the Journal or participate in conferences. The Doug the ruling bye-bye predatory publishes well. Let's see if Any of that money actually moves anywhere. It's not clear with a the group will cough up that fifty million dollars which is an estimate of how much the company made from customers over a period. All whether we'll appeal we tend to leave leaked of question to its representative yet to receive a reply but it is nice. Clear message to all the Sake Journal. Publishers of the world that they're being watched watched and there could be consequences. Joan Bohannon thought journalists and now director to add an artificial intelligence data in San Fran called primer. They didn't biscuit slipping under the radar. And using American Canadian European banks to move money millions of dollars of money from a complicit gains so this court ruling basically makes that extremely inconvenient to do now. John was to present evidence in the kite board again. Anthem IQ Group by the Federal Trade Commission. Because he'd had an unusually Hansa with the publisher so all mix was one of hundreds of publishers offers that I tested in sting operation. I wrote some computer code to generate thousands of very bad scientific papers. They have been negative kind of legendary inside the back in two thousand twelve John Reporting for the general died and the Expression Predatory Journal Common News. there was a guy named Geoffrey Yu who was probably the only person around making in a big public. Stink about this and trying to actually Shine a light on it. It was very very bold effort. He had something called feels list or at least it became known as beal's lest my name is Jeffrey Bill. And I'm a retired academic librarian from University of Colorado Denver. But make the deal. Beal Blackley fame and a climb and karate he was the first to coin. The Phrase Predatory Journal the Journal. Publishers hated being malysz because it it stigmatizes them in meant that their income was decreased. Most of the predatory publishers are predatory not only in their publishing but in just the way they operate in general and they would use the heckler's actors veto. They would call the library director and complain about me and they would try to annoy people at my university as much as possible in order to manipulate those people at the university to make me stop the list so that their complaints would stop. I also received several threats of legal action including think it was is in twenty twelve international threatened to sue me for one billion dollars one billion dollars. It was just a threat. What I learned from it is that you can basically basically pay an attorney? Five hundred dollars all right a threatening letter so they they did that but they never followed through with. It was never introduced in any court consequences consequences. Jeffrey of running that black leaked were immense. And I'll come back to that. One estimate suggests that there are at least eight thousand predatory journals it is just one publisher of many but Jeffrey Bill provocatively cold. The the evil empire of Predatory Publishing I stand Dan by that statement and what they do is they really hurt a lot of people. You know the scholarly publishing system works on the honor system and people operate in good faith but oh mix international has has totally broken all that down. They use a lot of spamming to solicit article manuscripts from researchers they have journal titles that match the titles of respected journals. Usually one word off enough to confuse people that it might be the respected journal in the `field they will at People's names to their editorial boards without the person's permission people from top universities top researchers in the field and they'll use their identity to promote the journal and when the person finds out about it and ask them to remove their name. They don't remove it they just leave it there because they're operating operating from foreign country. There's really nothing you can do about it. And they especially prey on young researchers in emerging researchers researchers who don't speak English as their first language. It's not just dont. As from developing countries that a toggle though that even acknowledged problem clinical epidemiologist. David moas taste the Croats at reaching into some of America's most delayed institutions including Harvard in the analysis that we did where we looked at a close to two thousand thousand articles published in Predator journals. We found that actually the most frequent corresponding authors were from what we would call first world countries countries with lots of money and lots of resources that is troubling very troubling because it suggests that at these institutions authors may not Be Aware of predatory journals and are we need to obviously ramp up some educational activities. People think that they're sending the manuscript to a legitimate respected journal. When it's really just a phony dough mix international journal and then they quickly accept the paper without any peer review and then send them an invoice and that point the authors realized that something is wrong because There was really no peer reviewed done yet papers accepted and they have this two thousand dollars invoice that comes through email and the olmecs demanding payment. Most of them asked to withdraw the paper when they realized that they've been duped. But then omits says says you can't withdraw your paper unless you pay US withdrawal fee. An often than olmecs will publish the article quickly and one of their journals and then and they can't submit it anywhere else. Because that would be duplicate submission it would be publishing the same article twice. which is something not supposed to do that? Nothing about Predatory Street Journal devoted to pose to happening time as John Bohannon Govett when he hit them. Attest yes yeah so I just wanted some data. It's frustrating to have such an enticing story of you know bad actors that potentially raking in millions of ill-gotten dollars dollars and not get some data to find out if it's true. We stay in molecular biology from offered. Clave he plotted experiment which was pretty straightforward. And the idea in a nutshell is if I submit a really and I mean truly bad scientific paper to your journal final and you accept it with no sign of any peer review and you asked me for money then you're you're a fake journal Publisher Sharma sure. Yeah John Wanted to take to how easy it was to get published in a predatory journal it can usually take many months used even to get a pipe into a reputable contact general and even then it's not a given that partly because of what's called Peer Review essential to the conduct protest. You Do Fairmont you. You brought it up reporting your results. Submit it to a journal and then it pulled destroyed by a bunch of other daunting

"Our next guest had a legendary career at Michigan he was outstanding receiver in the NFL he is the author of a new book in the title really does say it all doing it my way my outspoken life as a Michigan Wolverines NFL receiver and beyond it's a pleasure to welcome to this sporting life the one and only Braylon Edwards Braylon thank you for joining us. the long time it's been a long time since we spoke at an end and as you were dressed in the book Braylon when people think about you they don't just think about your talents as a receiver they don't think about the big games that AC title games or the rose bowls they think about the controversies what you you delve into them in this book why did you want to you know dredge all that stuff up. a lot of times people get attention as they tell their story or what exactly happened so one thing come out is more so with the perception is that the time and then it becomes a story and in all the years you know and that's what it is written in stone so it was a good time for me to be able to tell all the stories and under every story from do you eyes two incidents outside my clothes will arise and people works better there were other things at at playing in those situations but I just sold you know not saying anything but the media dictate that the media the media personnel for markings dictate a on one matter and I got quiet never said anything and those things never get a chance to you know get toggle plus a lot of good things happen to you know there's a lot of philanthropic endeavors that happened a lot happier off the field have a great there are a lot of other things to talk about you know depression bullying when I was a kid so it's a heck of a store and has a lot of things that we can put out there in the book speaking with Braylon Edwards the former Pro Bowl receiver the former Michigan Wolverines star he was the third overall pick in the two thousand five NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns it only your third season in the league Braylon you at twelve hundred eighty nine receiving yards right AT receptions are your pro bowler you had some other good years notably with the jets in twenty ten almost a thousand yards receiving but you're clear didn't go the way you hoped it would go eight and and although he lasted much longer than most last in the NFL you you you were someone who is thought of as a hall of fame talent. if their injuries there are other things that went on what was it like just being caught up in that maelstrom and and not being able to get every ounce of your talents to use every ounce the weight that you would have wished our records right you know a lot of times he says spray Kato where you go online for you were you drafted what can you play for I was not at the Cleveland Browns and United play with injuries and uncertainties and continue with. in your world organizational changes office according to head coach ownership ID with kids go to New York Jets have young quarterback was did it for us but there wasn't a lot of. Aaron it outside there were you going to have success then I had a knee injury San Fran I rushed back to the field to get out there because your Harbaugh's how could a person on and it was the first time I hadn't been in a stable situation you know I got that right is a one year deal there was no stability there was no next year there was no gas I was going to start so when I got hurt when I was starting to try to come back try to rise back needed never was the same a play for Seattle I still feel the nails in quarters on sat I'm way way too young at their target core those that travel more time with jet and two thousand thirteen and Lincoln totally with Michael in the preseason against the Jaguars. it is it was times that I mean I I I will smite curricula definitely connect them when I was a kid the one of those guys. got drafted in the end of the first round to the coat so to the you know to a team that won the cowboys Burgoon a play yard can do more to maybe just have a consistent office right you know it is clear that I had seventeen quarterbacks and and for that reason I remember I remember all those guys no no I mean it's hard to remember all of them but I remember that there were a lot of them yeah I mean it was the with Braylon Edwards and his new book is doing it my way my it's spoken life is a Michigan Wolverine NFL receiver and beyond really before we let you go it's great catching up after all these years but you've been out in the news a little bit recently you're talking about your alma mater talk about your former coach Jim Harbaugh and and the words you've used I think are light years behind that team in Columbus Ohio a lot Ohio state and it's it's everyone's entitled to their opinion and I would never discourage anyone from sharing their opinions especially someone with the standing that you have what makes you say that the other than the fact that Michigan's lost fourteen out of fifteen to Ohio state well for them and that's a great start but United in the in the space of the conversation that was more so long live. as they have the idea of a state trooper who over the last year he started without one which says look from trestle so first we'll start a minor. by my Dennis they're gonna have a quarterback that can run quarterbacks that can pass the ball sort thank you have athletes at the wide receiver position they could take the ball and taunted him call back and have a great run again and I have great uses if you look at the changes over the last eighteen years they all have the same I didn't you know how they're able to have success in order to be a national championship game you have to have the formula is you need a defense that can play and win games defense bill instead but you have to have a quarterback yeah arguably in highland conversation that definitely should be first team all conference and you have to have a running back that is potentially a second round us or in the hive in conversation apply when you look at certain things all have stayed in one of when you watch them play you see a team that you know has the potential to be there at the end of the year we watch Oklahoma we watch the cleanse Alabama Georgia where you are these things you see something bad okay this is this is even ten straight year with a Honda fit yet so you know that we watch miss again you have the same question each year by year who's going to be the quarterback who's going to run the ball on this game hasn't had that yeah all dirt like Lansing Michigan office is that lived in our rabbit I do not around and finished in two thousand twelve two thousand thirteen and before that you know who the other guy you know was listening at the wide receiver play make would like this guy's just it is with the the creme de la creme like he's the one I don't mean to talk about my is usually does our ideas right. nineteen ninety six so what's being said ideas on that that was going to take forty Janes national I mean by light years behind my house they get sick and they stay true lies we've been asking the same question of Michigan there's love the arms of our book let's go the radio because the rates right every year who's the quarterback the quarterback gonna be who's going to be an issue I can always between three guys it's never a guy would never moving the next season of their lives guys come back we're gonna build around him even this year's like say that is in that wires yeah this is what I said okay last year but even if your life is your McAfee gonna be you guys Joe Miller even twenty years ago when one of those guys was named Tom Brady couldn't get the job exactly or did you incident Brady is it US got left cooking the bouldering so it's always a question about the way I received right I have you so those are questions at the major institutions that away those are not the question so I did and that's what I mean by light years I know people eight years I would say in the way. that's what I mean the identity has not been there it's it's tough love for Braylon Edwards for his beloved Wolverines his new book is doing it my way my outspoken life and it is still outspokenness Michigan Wolverine NFL receiver and beyond Braylon as I said it's a pleasure catching up with you and congratulations with the book and a good luck with us on as many as possible so I like to tell the others to come on the show. thank you maybe I will we'll catch up with the recap in a round thanksgiving before those they I would love to do
