Rep. Kevin McCarthy: From Bakersfield to Washington
"Know what makes Kevin Kevin. Where did you come from? Where did you get to to where you're at now? Well, you know, I'm from California, but it's not the part of California most people envision. It's a place called Bakersfield, California. And this is, if you ever read the grapes of wrath, this is the shantytown in that book. This is agriculture. It's energy, it's oil. It's we have a couple of military bases. And a couple people who are from Bakersfield, you might think of Merle Haggard, buck Owens. It's a little more Texas of California. And I grew up with a family. I was the youngest of three. My father and mother, my father worked two jobs. He was a fireman and he moved furniture on his days off. And when I got a high school, we didn't have great wealth. So I went to community college. And they instilled in me a work ethic. And I always had a job, but I remember I met this guy that owned a car dealers. He had a car dealer's license, but he ran a little convenience stores. And I'd pay him a $100 to take me to the car auctions in LA LA is like two hours away. And you had to be a dealer to go down there. And this is where it had a big fairgrounds where all the dealers would bring their trade ins. But you have to be a dealer to go. And I would go and I would buy and sell cars and I'd flip them to pay my way through college. Now, I know your attorney, I found out later it was illegal, but I didn't know why I was doing it. Thanks, statue, LeBron James probably run along. And, you know, when you're a community college on the weekends, what you do, you go get your friends who are away at college, right? So I had somebody my best friend was up at Stanford and some people have seen and had some good friends down San Diego state. So there's one Friday now I'm gonna go down to the weekend to San Diego state. So I go to the grocery store to cash a check, so I have some money for the weekend. An interesting thing happened. The day I'm there to catch a check the day before, the lottery started in California, not lotto but lottery. And so I'm cashing the check. I buy a lottery ticket and I won the lottery. The most you can win at the time is 1985, it's $5000. So you know he put yourself in my place. You're 20 years old. It's a Friday night. You just won $5000 and 85 money before the Biden inflation. And you end up like ten minutes from Tijuana, right? So I come back, I take my folks to dinner and I get my brother and sister each a hundred bucks and I take the majority rest of money and one thing you know about me I like to take risk. I put the majority rest in to one stock. And I did pretty well. I made 30% of my money in 6 weeks. And at the end of the next semester, I decided to take a break from school. I went out to try to buy a franchise, but no one would sell me one, but that didn't deter me. Another thing you learned is I never give up. So I opened up a deli. And there's three lessons I learned in all of my small businesses. You're the first to work, your last to leave in your last to be paid. And we were pretty successful. So at the end of almost two years, I now have enough money. I could pay my whole way through college and I wouldn't have to work. And as long as I went to Cal state, and nobody in my family at that moment had finished a four year degree so I sell my business, I'm going to college and I opened the newspaper and it said be a summer intern in Washington D.C. with my local congressman. Now I do not know this man, but I thought he'd be lucky to have me so I applied. And you know what he did? He turned me down. But you know at the end of the story is, I'm now elected to the seat. I could not get an internship for. Only in America

Air Force, Colorado State Among Schools Targeted by American Athletic Conference
"Article on cbs sports website. The american is looking to add. Air force boise state. Colorado state san diego state and uab. So you a. b. would be poached from conference. You say that would be a tough loss for conference to say and then you're going to go after so mountain west teams because if you look at it maybe the mountain west is going to be the biggest threat to the american and the rest of us the group of five even though the american likes to call themselves a power. San Diego Enters the Red Tier
"Welcome to southern california real estate report. This is bob mcguire. Daniel wise come into from san diego. California reopening sandiego reopened a red tier san diego. Right pretty exciting. So so what does this mean really for us so it. There's there's some right there's some honest it doesn't mean anything but i'm not gonna sit inside and san diego weather right now and other at a restaurant but you know what it does mean that the world i was opening up restaurants precise operate at twenty five percent capacity inside museums could operate inside a twenty five percent capacity. Haven't been very perk is open so all in all the fun things seaworld you know. I don't know what to say about seaworld. But so they offer operate again inside. I think they've been able to operate outside museums but now they can go back to operating inside right in time for our summer. Tourism season right and saint patrick's day right so which this is going to post just the day after saint patrick's day but it was a big deal so going into the red tier for that particular day. It was big deal. So i go to this really like super great little deli down in down by san diego state. Right and it's it's a real popular one. I don't know if you've ever been to it. it's It's it's like a little jewish deli called What is it called. I cannot remember the name right now. i can't believe. I'll have to look it up. I'll post at d. d. and it's awesome. It's like really authentic really great and it was packed. Last night. I went last night to pick up dinner and i do weight and extra forty five minutes to get my dinner and it was to go do irish jews in common like well. I think it's just because it's a deli. They just do super good corned. Beef was one of those things. So it's a really but it's a really popular. So i think that the delhi site that the jewish shelley more like east coast so they're really really good. It's just i mean. does that sound bad. I don't. I don't know i so. So it's a really like it's it's it's like an authentic east coast deli. That's yeah i don't know what's funny as delays even growing up with a jewish family. I don't go to delhi. So i really don't know like a bad east coast deli from sally so it's i think it's a lot different. It's a lot. There are a lot better and so they have much better light quality of meats. And everything like that. So it's just the one in del mar really popular same thing. East coast are west coast elliott. That's like an east coast one and that is also a very well known really good jewish delis so that the east coast jewish. He's known as being really good. Yeah and so so. That's why it's not like it's not like It's not like a religious thing or anything but it's it's always funny that i hear so milton's and are the two big ones here and i'm sure milton's was super pac too but So it's really good and and it was packed. It was packed packed. Like i've never seen it. That packed and crazy and spent there. Because i was there to get dinner together because i wanted corn beef. Because i'm an irish guy and it was the whole outside was completely packed and there was like a line like out the door around the building practically to get in and that was to order it and you had to wait an hour to order it. So it's so. I mean clearly like the red tier like people were getting out. Yeah i feel like people having getting out if you like. The more and more people are that are getting vaccinated especially has kind of elderly generation. It's getting vaccinated. You're gonna see a resurgence and that's a really good point. Because last night it was a lot of older people. Like a lot of people that you wouldn't think would be going out. We're definitely out who fully vaccinated talking to. They're like oh it feels so good to be vaccinated and you know. Yeah we're we're we're ready to get out again and people were talking like in line that this was the first time they've been out in a long time so i think it's good the combination of the vaccine's rolling out at the same time that obviously that's having an effect on the numbers here they're saying that our numbers are really good So the the numbers are. I think we've now gone to six cases per hundred thousand. I don't remember exactly what we're we're so it is saying in here and this by the way was out of the. Ut okay so union tribune and they are saying nine of the other county so it looks like nine. Other counties moved into red to in those were monterey riverside sacramento santa barbara center to hema to lori and ventura And then that just leaves eleven of the california's fifty eight counties in the most restrictive purple tier still the the cases. They're saying have gone to six point. Eight per one hundred thousand residence so they took last week's case rate which was eight point. Eight where at six point eight. And i think they took like a combined total and that got us just over the mark to go to read. So that's good so we keep having our case count drop to which is which is good and i think a lot of that has to do with vaccines right. We're just not spreading fast and it's starting to slow down so hopefully this'll be. The weird thing is in europe. They're kinda getting so talked to one of our clients say who lives in france and She was saying that you know like where she is. She's around knees and it's become more restrictive there so they become more lockdown.

"If porter can get that basketball. Iq rolling enough to knowing where he's supposed to be for nikola yokich. This some thinking of harrison wins conversation. We're having back on the show on friday. I'm thinking of that chapter. And he's saying hey porter. The main thing that i've noticed is he's not used to being number one. He's not used to being a number two. He's not necessarily used to being an off the ball guy. That's trying to find a shot. This isn't gary. Gary harris was so good that joker in fact three years ago he was supposed to be those two with the two men game then it became murray and joker then murray kind of became more of an isolation guy still can work well which ochre if porter can get that down look out and he can fall on thirty points. Joker can do that too. That's it that's the growth they sought against chicago. It was a weird game. Talk about a weird game now. Nuggets were down by five with a few minutes left. They found a way to get the. I thought they were going to dwindle. Another bad third period for the nuggets. They were outscored. Thirty to twenty seven. They had this game hand bowls. Make the comebacks. They get the lead. The nuggets do their thing. Joker takes over some big shots late. Here's the here's the trying to figure out who it was. Who had the t. Oh it was it was garrett temple okay so let me set this up last night. The spread was four and a half points nuggets minus four and a half so if you bet on the nuggets to win by five or the bulls had to lose by for less than five. The nuggets are up for. There's like five seconds left the bulls don't have a time out. They go down. They throw up a quick three. Hits the rim jamal. Murray comes down with the board. There's a second left in the game and garrett temple thousand sends one of the best free throw shooter for the nuggets to align murray hits both and if you bet on the nuggets to cover the spread ya got it. Thanks to that last second foul. They were mathematically look it up there was no way chicago could have won that game even if they get a quick steal by the time they throw it back for three. It's over that game's over temple with a second left burgos the line they inbounded they. Just roll it in. They don't care games over but there was some happy betters last night and there were some furious betters last night. Thirty two minutes after the hour mclean is coming in colfax. He's trying to be the second hole again in the history of this top text tuesday to win three in a row new. He's the only guy that has done it and this was before we were doing prizes so he didn't even win for it mcclain's trying to take this away. He gets it today. He could win the david thompson. Jersey impeach reminds me of that tall guy from grade school that never touched a basketball before his life but still makes varsity because he's a foot taller than all the others in. Pj bad basketball player but he's bald out. There's bailed out by his physical attributes in shooting ability. But see what you just said..

How Cody Sperber Completely Screwed Everything Up & Still Got Rich
"And on that about is just this topic about how you completely screwed up. Not just something but everything and you still got rich and this is a fascinating topic. Is i know having spoken to now. You know well over twenty five hundred entrepreneurs on this show and speaking entrepreneur fire nation a lot that a lot of people who have never quote unquote and made it or gotten rich. They seem to think there's just like this one chance they get if they don't hit out of the ballpark and just hit a grand slam on that one. I try they're doomed forever. They're living under a bridge. They're eating out of some trash. Can this on fire like they just have literally that's the perception but the reality is the you know and that i know and that all the past guests that i've had on tried to share and get across the my audiences. Listen you can literally screw up everything for years and years and years one thing right just one thing and you can become filthy stinking rich so break this down for us. Cody how can you screw everything up and still win at this game of life. Just think about your own personal john. I can only imagine you've interviewed so many people when you first were starting out. You had this vision of what you wanted to do. But as you started taking steps to actually you know put in the work and make it happen for yourself. How many new things constantly just unfolded in frail. I mean literally. Ignorance is absolute bliss when it comes to something like this. Because if i had known what was going to be involved with the growing this media empire like i probably would have been too scared to start but i know so. You're right. I just had to start and i found a bunch of things along the way and just had to keep knocking them out. If you don't have or passion for whatever it is you're doing you're not gonna make it through the fires so i mean that's a core thing they gotta have and if you don't have it right now you're working a dead end job and you're one of those people that says oh man i want to go to work today or it's the weekend i can't wait for the weekend do so i could take off and chill and barbecue and stuff. You're in the wrong profession and you need to do whatever it takes to find. What your purpose in light is. Because i never feel like. I'm going to work i. I'm so obsessed with what i do. It's all i think about all the time. And i love it. I actually get irritated when things get into way of me. Living my life's purpose so so. So that's that's kind of the practice of it. But you know it's not about one big win it stacking little wins along the way and it's about developing your core skills and capabilities as you're on your journey. I you know. I can envision trying to start. I don't have a podcast but harrington starting a podcast realize. Oh my god. I got to know how to get listeners. I gotta learn how to do graphic design. I gotta learn how to talk properly and be concise and there's so many other skills sales skills business skills that go into being able to do what you do. I can only imagine how many little steps older printing so for me. I've always been the underdog. I've always been person that When i when i was a kid i had extreme hyperactivity disorder with the called it. I was on ritalin. My dad was really. He's he's my hero. He's an amazing human beings. He used to walk into my room and tell me hey. Don't listen all the teachers doctors and everybody. Don't listen to your mom. You shouldn't be taken this crap. And he would switch out. My ritalin with a multivitamin so awesome intel my mom. Oh yeah. I gave it to him because he always told me. That's your superpower kid like don't ever forget that like that's to be the thing that's going to take your life in in so i was always if i was into something. I was obsessed with it. Otherwise i totally neglected it. That's why did poorly in school. And i'm sure a lot of people listening this probably relate to some of this You know i was always passed over pushed around. I was bullied. I was sidelined. I was the underdog. And i didn't understand it as a kid but as you grow up i got used to being with my back against the law. I got used to being in a pressure situation. Where i was always trying to perform and it has an adult manure. It's the greatest thing ever. Were you like that. On on any level john absolutely i mean for me. I was just that person who's always struggling to truly envision. Like what is that passion that i have in life and i didn't find it in my teens. I didn't find it in my twenties. It was literally all the way to my early thirties before i was like. Oh okay. I don't have to do this job that i know i'm gonna hate the next forty years so it absolutely took time. So that's why. When i talked to people that are fifteen. Twenty thirty fifty and they're like you know what like i still don't feel like i found my thing. I'm like hey sometimes it just takes longer and sometimes we're not all born as entrepreneurs but we grow and develop into entrepreneurs because that was me for sure i wasn't selling baseball cards at twelve years old. I wasn't running around like you know selling newspaper. I wasn't doing anything. Entrepreneurial at all until i was thirty two years of age so it came to me later in life not late in life but later in life. And i really do love cody. How you talked about stacking little winds in for me to game changing books that i read back in two thousand twelve and i was getting my entrepreneur. Journey going is the slight edge by jeff olson. In the compound effect by darren heart because those books talk about just that stacking these little wins and when you stack these little wins over time they give you the slight edge. It was turned into a massive edge. They compounds and they give you this compound effect into massive massive winds so fire nation when you look back over a month and you're like i really accomplish anything big this month hay. What are the little things that you did like. What are the little things you're stacking. That are over six months twelve months twenty four months going to cause massive massive win so i want to kind of move into cody. A little bit about why. This game is rigged. I mean you know. I know that you screwed everything up in your life at least once in your still winning and you're still it would be financially successful but you were able to identify because of that. This game is rigged so talk to us. About what exactly that phrase means and of course how we is fire nation can beat that ragged game. I got into real estate about sixteen years ago and as as an investor down create a real estate investor. And so. I had very little resources. So i was looking around trying to figure out you know how to make money in in what i was going to do with my life. I was just coming out of the navy. And i was like okay. I got to figure something out at at a certain point. I wanted to be a history teacher. And i went and talked to the history professors down at san diego state university and i said how much you guys make and they started laughing and they said we gotta have two jobs just to survive and so i was looking around for something and that's when i discovered no money down real estate. Investing in was because a friend flipped a house and made eighty thousand dollars in a couple months before that we were party in he had nothing to his name and now he's driving a brand new mercedes in at all this money and i was like how did you do that. He's like i did this. This process called wholesaling. Right flipped a house. And i made this money. I didn't have to have a real estate license. I didn't have to have deep pockets. Didn't have any previous experience. Somebody showed me how to do it. And i i did it. And that was for like one of the first times where i realized. What don't i know about making money. What don't i understand what wasn't taught to me in school. And unfortunately a lot of people grow up. They don't have financial intelligence. We're not taught how to be great at making money. Not really making money. We're taught to get a job you know and that whole spiel where you're conditioned from your teachers your parents in your church and school get good grades and get a good job and you work away up the corporate ladder and so once i discovered that there's this whole world of creative real estate out there i just went down the rabbit hole and when i say the game is rigged. There's a million potholes and hurdles in your way but financial intelligence takes energy in after. I'm horrible at math. I loved to make money and the two don't aren't required to go together and I look at this damien. go all right. Needs to be more education out there taught especially if we go upstream in and work with young kids which is a lot of charity. Work and stuff that i do Works with underprivileged kids onto. It's because i. I gotta get them. Young got to change their language patterns their relationship with money needs to change. They have to understand that letter running a big corporate businesses. They don't want you to break free and go and start your own business and be their competitors they want you to follow the rules and sit in see and it's kinda that old school mentality where they just want you to follow the rules and for me second. I started asking better questions. why why. Why do these things happened. Why don't why aren't they teaching. These things and i started going down. The rabbit holes started finding some good mentors in my life. Everything starting to ship and what you'll find is once you start down that path. It's impossible not

NBA Mock Draft 3.0
"And we are back talking two thousand twenty mock draft three point o our last mock draft of the year. It's draft day draft morning. What better to unwrap and a mock draft on draft morning. it's the second round. Now now's the time to confess. I'm really terrible at projecting second rounds like you know my hit rate and some drafts has been like one two three picks in the second round. It's it's so hard to keep track of the first round the wheels to sort of come off and these picks happened like every two minutes. I it's hard to really keep track. I did my best. I project where. I think particular players can go. You definitely don't really get deep into this when you're talking the nba scouts in executives about what they're going to do in the second round. They're still trying to figure out the first round as well. So i've tried to find some fits there so this is reported more chad ford speculation. Here about what's happening. The second round starts with the dallas mavericks this pick via the warriors taking malachi. Flynn the san diego state. Junior point guard One of the guys that frankly could go ten spots higher in the draft. I actually really love malachi flynn. There's kind of a lot of point guards kind of later in the first round which may push him out a little bit. But i actually think he's the guy who could step in play right away. I would actually love him in dallas. I think that'd be great. Pick for dallas at thirty one at thirty two. The charlotte hornets are on the board. They're getting this pick via the cavs. Paul read the sophomore forward center out of depaul. Have them going thirty two. This is john. Hollinger's been super high on all year. I think he's another guy who can guard positions on the floor. I really like him. Actually think he brings some stuff offensively as well. I personally like him. Better than precious. I'm right now. Could turn out to be a terrible take. But it's kind of what i think and i definitely think he could be an excellent fit. I'm in charlotte. Especially if they end up with lamelo ball and they're gonna need to add a defensive big man. As part of that package at thirty-three the minnesota timberwolves around the board. This'll be the third pick because they have to. First round picks. Tillman the junior power forward at michigan state. Everybody loves this kid. He's he's one of these guys like high floor. Low ceiling. just does his work every day. Great rebound or plays hard. I'm ken defend going. Bring be a great locker room guy is gonna find some rotation that somewhere I like him in minnesota on a team. That is trying to go forward. I think he actually adds a bit of a veteran presence to the locker room. At thirty four the philadelphia seventy sixers are on the clock. That get this. Pick via the hawks. Isaiah joe the arkansas shooting guard who is one of the best shooters in this draft. Crazy range. High volume of three point shots philadelphia. Always in need shooters. When you're going to be playing. Ben simmons on this team he certainly constructs the floor. And i'd like isaiah joe there them at thirty five the sacramento kings Via the pistons. Dan dotson to kansas sophomore guard. Who is one of the quickest players in the draft. He's an elite score excels off the getting to the basket not a great shooter a bit undersized for his position not really a point guard that's why he slides a few spots higher but could be instant offense off the bench for sacrimento at thirty five at thirty six the philadelphia seventy sixers back on the clock this time via that pick from the mix jordan aura the louisville junior who also is one of the better shooters in this draft. He has good size vers position. Good length i'm not sure exactly what else he brings to the table besides shooting but again i'm just loading philly up i with shooters at the moment at thirty seven. The washington wizards are on the board. They get this pick via the chicago. Bulls tyler bay the junior ford out of colorado who is one of the best athletes in the strath super explosive. Really hard worker on the defensive end still just kinda coming along on the offensive. And then i think that's been a concern. He's he's one of those guys that might be a little bit of a twitter. Not sure exactly what position he plays in the pros that causes him to slide. A few picks in this draft think this is still really value. and by the way when. We're talking about a lot of these guys dotson. Tillman for example malachi flan. These guys could all end up in the first round as well. Just have them the second thirty eight new york knicks via the hornets janis ramsey. The texas tech freshman guard again volume score can shoot it a little bit We're just loading the knicks up now with backward guys that can score the basketball. I'm not sure who's going to defend in new york. But he's an intriguing prospect. He's only nineteen years old. And i certainly there's upside there with the thirtieth pick in the draft at thirty nine the new orleans. Pelicans selecting this pick for the wizards. Daniela touro the minnesota sophomore center. Who had a really really strong summer season one of the more improved players in the country very skilled at big man. I'm great size. Adding just bore skill in size to this pelicans roster i'm at the moment If you remember earlier jalen smith. I'm selected at thirteen at forty. The grizzlies are on the board. This pick via the silence. This is the first pick that the grizzlies have been able to make in the twenty twenty. Nba draft a doco as a bouquet. The kansas center. Big guy seven. Seven wingspan seven footer. Really good athlete actually just dominant player in the pain. Terrible free throw. Shooter doesn't really do anything facing the basket. But when you have that size and length and athleticism. I think you get something done in. The and kind of reminds me deondraye jordan. A little bit and a little bit surprised. He doesn't go higher. I get there seems to be a penalty on the big minner plane or pain. Right now in the draft at forty one san antonio spurs back on the on the board yama dr the israeli guard nineteen year old for hop. Well tel-aviv and you know. He's such an intriguing prospect because he plays his butt off. His incredible energy is just making a difference when he's out there but he's not really a point guard. He's kind of more of a two guard in a point guards body. He's not like a great shooter. I'm athletically he's actually not bad at all but that lack of a jump shot kinda undersized i position that makes him more of a second round prospect at he absolutely wants to leave israel and come to the nba. And if it's the g. league next year and so he could be an interesting prospect for san antonio developed down the road

Stomping out Diabetic Foot Ulcers at Podimetrics
"Exciting to be here thrilled to get a chance to talk about the real pains and struggles the unglamorous parts of startups and. Just. Throw the be here today. Terrific terrific. Now, one thing that was a little bit interesting to do hopefully, listeners do as well is here a little bit about your back story or CEO's backstories how they got into Med tact. Their path to their venture in this case, Pota- metrics and Just learn a little bit about you was your path kind of almost predestined medicine and science was more secure this How did entrepreneurship fit into that? Tell us a little bit about your background. It's definitely not. Linear it's been a very. Interesting path to get to where I am today but grew up in in southern California. Used to do. I was going to be a musician. I was a fairly dreadful percussionist in various punk bands and you know I thought that was GONNA be Kinda my deal for while I went to Undergrad at at San Diego State University coming out of high school is Maybe C. Student something like that and I spent eight years. Undergrad is there for quite a bit you're really trying to figure out like, why am I here what am I WANNA do? It was Kinda on the hunt for something I didn't really know what it was. And I just never run out of the year, your four or five as I'm just GonNa just coasting along I end up meeting this this pre med student and. It was such an amazing I ended up your city. Just talking to this guy, he he had every everything was so well planned meticulously and he was talking about, you know why he was doing it and it instantly resonated with me I I'd been at this point thing I was a chemistry major with emphasis in biochemistry. But the idea that you could use those to you know make another person feel better. It's very practical use of everything that I had been learning and it was crazy. It instantly clicked holy smokes like this could be an amazing thing I just knew somebody with my sis stellar academic career going up until this point wasn't going to be an easy part. I'm I'm proclaims the Pre Med office and you know they're looking at my record like. John. There's other there's other pathways you could do. and. Out of it and there's also do schools but you know that may be a challenge and I was just like, okay. This is what I wanna do this is it. Around the same time I. Remember. I worked basically fulltime all of Undergrad and was on the phone this when these amazing people got to know her her husband was a cardiothoracic surgeon and she introduced me to him and then he he invited me to follow him in the or for doing this for a while and it was just you're at the same time there's something magical about you know for him his. CARDIAC, surgeon. So this is he was a patient who is you know so worried and scared and you're able to be with them in in in in fix it impact his life. So it was just this. Moment or it wasn't like I always wanted to be a doctor but yet it makes so much sense when I heard it and I ended up going to fortunately I. my academic record had a rocking mcat scores and was able to go to. The talk school at least that I had on my list, which was University of Pittsburgh is a very social school interesting where I remember somebody's told me the elevator at at the medical campus and the doors shut. If no one's talking, that's not the place for you to go and I just remember I was doing this elevator tests and people just wanted to chat about whatever it was. It was a really interesting place to be in there. That was really the first time we're technology started. Sort of come into my life I remember. A few of US students set at all levels of the school you know in their first year second year CETERA. We found each other for our love of tackling. We decided to create this this Tech Club where who's GonNa talk about technology and Madison and what was out there. And we're going of quickly realized that the schools tech infrastructure was terrible. This would have been two thousand and two thousand. One maybe something like that and Each each office medical education, and soon affairs they all had different websites none of them talk to each other as a very disjointed experience and we thought wouldn't it be cool to try to rebuild this for the students in getting sanctioned as a committee and that was really one of the I.
Who would replace Kamala Harris as California Senator?
"We still have 12 weeks before the November election, Voters will decide between President Trump on my vice President Mike Pence against former Vice President Joe Biden and current Democratic vice presidential nominee California Senator Kamala Harris. But in Harris are victorious. Governor Newsome will have to appoint a new senator to serve the next two years here in California, and well, there's been early speculation on names like State Attorney General Javier Becerra and San Diego State Senator Toni Atkins. Another elected officials told the governor he's interested. Mayor of Imperial Beach Search, the DEA sent a note to the governor with a picture of him in a business suit with a surfboard and water, nothing his intention to seek the appointments If the Democrats win because Pamela Harris may become our next vice president, I notified Governor Newsome like everyone does not is via Twitter that I'd like to be on the collection left to be the next U. S. Senator put out Open seat. And I think it's important to have someone who's not from the insider circle in Sacramento on someone that's ready to help clean up California and fight for our planet and our ocean from day one. Well and yes, I think it was the announcement that color base attention picture of you in a business suit with your surfboard. Right. The water's edge. Kind of embodying what it means to be from Imperial Beach. Yeah, you know, and you're a bitch, maybe small. What? We're mighty, You know, I've seen the names of some of the more high profile candidates and you know the reality of California's in trouble countries in trouble, And so we need someone who's used to doing things without a lot of resource is gonna support. You could get things done quickly, and that's experience. I've had thereby be in that experience that we need for the next senator from California and as the native Senate, California someone who rested 500 California the lifeguard for the state and for the city of Baby, I'm ready for the job and just look forward to being considered by Governor Newsome. Well, obviously you've worked with the governor, and in fact, you've worked as high as going to the White House when it comes to the sewage issue along the border, with the issues coming out of Mexico to impact San Diego County Imperial Beach, the city of San Diego. Everywhere else here with its impact that profile of yours with that fight has gone to the highest level. Yeah, so you know, unfortunately, because sewage issue is continuing to happen. I ve had to reach out from everybody from the president of Mexico, too. You know, President Trump We've met Got Governor knew someone. The governor of Baja California. So yeah, felt the times were like more like an international diplomat rather than a mare. But that is good practice good experience for what it takes to be an effective senator. To give you credit. Since the minute she was in office, she has support our first queen of the border. She's put a lot of attention on period Beach. In fact, her California director came to Imperial Beach to visit her stop is in very involved in this issue, so she's been great on the tissue as well as Senator Feinstein, but it's time for a new direction and and that's what I'm putting My My name in the hat or handed the ring And you know there is a perception out there at some points where you know, San Diego geographically being where it is. So we feel that the state of times may forget about us or things like that. You know, putting San Diego right back up there and kind of raising our hand and saying, Hey, what about us? Yeah, you know, Right now we have two senators from Northern California from the Bay area, So obviously we need a lot more Southern California repetition and the fact that Southern California needs a lot of help. We've seen that during this covert Christ of some of the highest rates, obviously in the country in Southern California, especially here in South San Diego and along the border, So we're in trouble have the highest rate of unemployment in the state along the borderlands question. Imperial County so We're in trouble. We need to get someone to replace Senator Harris. She gets elected vice president who's fighting for California and every California and not just the ones who can write campaign checks, right? I think that's important to make sure that someone who works for every California In every corner of state and every family and put families and kids first for California
Conversation With Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thompson
"Delighted to welcome. To our program, a very important guests at this unbelievably strange time from the Mountain West Conference Commissioner Craig Thompson Commissioner thank you very very much for making the time I I, I can only imagine what your schedule is like. These days especially Zoom Bill Assuming there is one good afternoon. Paul good to be with you. You know I hope to mode no more about The next ninety minutes to two hours I have a four o'clock board calling five o'clock standing Monday de call, so we all compare notes and Kinda live by that old adage. God gave us two ears and one off for a reason, right? We're trying to learn from each other. Well we appreciate you making time I'm curious before we get down to some of the obvious questions Since, this occurred you. You've been very obviously active in in the NCAA, basketball tournament, having chaired the the men's basketball committee, and it all started there, and and I know in in your many many years is as commissioner. You've experienced so much but How do you? How do you prepare yourself for something like this? which is literally off the charts. Really is and you know again you don't because. no-one there might have been a few people worldwide They'd be well into their hundreds that were around nineteen eighteen. Spanish flu days, but For the most part, nobody's dealt with any of this Paul. So it's all new, and and it's It's disconcerting. It's hard. It's sad, but it's It's life and it's something we. We have to adjust to and and moved from. In as you get closer to what are really critical decisions, other conferences have made these choices many have not What what do you weigh as you're about to go onto? Another call here how how do you determine these things? Well, it's really got to beat a the safety and the health soccer you I think it's simply going to come down to what is the risk tolerance for for all the various groups just within our FBI subdivision and certainly there's. A rank and file and differences between the autonomous five leaks and a group of five leaks, but You've got you've got. A ton of governors. There's fifty state governors in that up BS group, one hundred thirty board of trustees, regions, one hundred thirty university presidents and Chancellors hundred thirty athletic directors under thirty head, football coaches, and I guarantee it dollar on the same page, and so you know we're. We're just trying to adjust on what makes the most sense for my university and ultimately our conferences. And everyone has a different set of circumstances as you said Commissioner Thompson but. It is late I think you know that we all we all know that. As you are about to go on these calls here in the next hour or two How do you start narrowing the window and coming to? Conclusions! Well we all kind of went into that false pretense and hope that fans should be better in July and August and we had time right back in March. We had four months to figure this out when we've got probably less than four weeks. A couple of weeks a big date coming up on Friday with you know the the six week period starting extended team practices, and then most camps opening somewhat in that August seventh time friend I! I had a good exchange with one of our head. Football coaches today saying you know I don't even know what to do. Because of campus regulations and concerns, we have one institution that's had nearly one hundred football players for little over a month. Now Paul and we have another institution that literally has no football players, conditioning of or working out degree, and so you know we're all over the map based on a local and university, muncipality rules and regulations and. I said this for months gone on standby. One of one of the big concerns and focal points for us is the state of California They just announced today that they're going to delay. The start of their prep season suggested until December or January didn't give an exacting, and they join a couple of states that the prep seasons have been canceled altogether one of our states New Mexico, so just just trying to deal with all the nuances and differences in rules, policies and allowances. As you as you try to deal with with some some issues before that certainly, the non-conference issues a lot of non conference. Games have been scrubbed. I. Has that been a major issue for you or Were you in reasonably good shape. Well it is a big issue, and of course years of all years. This is our twenty seven season A. We had more home games against PAC twelve than any time in our previous 21-year-history, we lost home games. Ucla at both. San Diego State ally. Utah, Colorado Washington state calendars on a state. They were GONNA play at the new two billion dollar NFL stadium in Las Vegas against UNLV so a lot of people like to point to that financial loss of losing the the six road at twelve games and a and a guarantee. Those seven home games from from both of financial interest level, and then ultimately you know television perspective CBS. Fox Aren't real thrilled. You know that we lost those seven home games. Talking to the Commissioner of the Mountain West Craig Thompson discussing all the variables. Commissioner. We. We've talked to so many different commissioners over these past few months, and as you as you so eloquently pointed out a minute ago. Everyone has a different set of circumstances and challenges you maybe more than than most because of the geographical aspect. But how do you think and it shouldn't be that hard to think about it since it's not far off? How how do you ultimately come up with what you would say? Good solution, not only for your member institutions, but for the safety of the athletes. Well again. You not to lean on your medical people and that's one of the. Major aspects of this board call coming up in an hour, so Paul because It's the first time that they in a while. They've heard directly from the the medical advisory group and you know they don't depend on them. You know they. They are the experts, will we? The board are economists and Then different walks of life. They're not medical people, per se, and so you know you really have to lean heavily on what makes sense I. I said four months ago and I I contend today. A lot of this is going to be perhaps probably triggered by what happens on our campuses. What they look like in the next month or so you know everybody's either hybrid mostly online You know there's GonNa. Be Certainly people walking around campus, but you know you. You really can't expect to have a college athletics if you don't have a fairly open in some degree. Campus. Commissioner I, it's no secret Wherever conferences are located and and and spread that football pays the majority of the bills there. There's some outliers of course but What's at stake you just from a revenue standpoint? Well you know. Let's all kinds of figures in I I know that A couple of our department said have lost Well in excess of ten million dollars now, and then could jump into without football alum Paul you know double and triple, and you know those are not insignificant numbers. They're smaller than the world. You live in I lived in Atlanta. For four years. New Orleans for twelve years both children born in New Orleans and well versed in an SEC football, and what it means in a walk of life, and so it's different, no question it's different I live in Colorado and and what it's like in Western states, but but none the less. You, do not escape whatever love your Ad. That football is probably that you know eighty eighty five percent of of an athletic budget, and and so it's so very important, but you know as harmful as painful rather as it is from the financial perspective now that cannot be the driving force won't be the driving force. It will be that the health and safety it'll be university decisions. You know I've always. Always felt. The presidents of universities and chances have an extremely difficult position now more so than ever because they're pushed him pulled in and all these different directions and you know I. Don't know how the decision will. Ultimately made would fall looks like from terms of football. I don't know who makes that decision, but Hopefully they'll be some clobbering collective. Let's let's go right to the College Football playoff. Can you even imagine a world where pick a number? Three conferences can play in the fall and seven up to play in the spring. What happens to see a p.? Is there a CFP? Does that make sense to have a CFP? I guess it might depend on those three conferences are and I use. You know you, you're GONNA have to look at this for for the good of everybody, and and you know the collaboration and collective exchange and we've seen conferences. Do things unilaterally I mean as a commissioner. You Work for twelve schools. You don't work for honored thirty FBI schools, and so you're doing what's right, and what's your membership is is directing and advise you to do, but we do have to get together and get the same page in some regards spor for the sake of the CFD for instance and the bowl system. I know at least I'm told in talking to your colleagues commissioners. We wind down. I know you've got a lot of meetings to that. You are a collaborative group. I mean that's a fact. I mean we see that all the time but it but I wonder though. Because we've already seen some some. Some schisms as we had the big ten, and then everyone else said something else I mean the PAC twelve and the big ten, and do you. Are you concerned about the stability of of what you do every day and try to work with everyone else within the framework of college athletics. I am and I'm not I mean again. We try to work together, but at the end of the day our plan for fourteen or ten members, order media have will dictate. What direction are leagues go and I know the NCAA takes a ton of shots, but the NCAA is membership driven. It's schools that are that are ultimately making decisions and the conferences the exact same way, so you know we can compare but I. I am concerned about The postseason college football, the the CFC's a five hundred million dollar enterprise NCAA. Basketball Championship is a six hundred million dollars in a prize number of conferences of two hundred and fifty to three hundred million dollar annual TV, contracts, and and we can't go ten I don't well. Yeah, anything's possible. You could go ten separate ways I. certainly don't think it's going to be that way at the end of the day. Commissioner will let you get back to your meetings, but thank you for making time. It was just a pleasure to to hear your perspective as someone who is so well respected. And revered in this industry we be well and let's hope for some good news. Stay safe yourself my friend.
Jon M. Chu - how the internet changed visibility for Asian Americans
"And if you could ever like yourself as the subject of a story it's like it almost takes a work of imagination to like you know. See that who you are can. Yes object store. I mean I basically grew up in. I think that's part of both my power and my weakness is like. I grew up in an environment in the Silicon Valley in the eighties and the nineties. And so I know that perspective because I grew up in the perspective of like Oh are Asians the other when you're surrounded by it. You are indoctrinated it and so you know what they're thinking and I grew up in a Chinese restaurant as well. So the fears of what people think of you are completely intertwined in your brain and in your heart. I think the Internet changed so much because when I watched youtube video and for instance and dance like I saw how fast the perspective of what Asians are as dancers in the dance world. When I started Asians were known as amazing hip hop dancers. But when I went to those tournaments and these these these conferences whereas they're six thousand Asia American dancers and their amazing hip hop dancers. And that's where they Kaba. Modern was job. Jabotinsky was there. Were all these amazing answers. And the world didn't know about it and in the span of like four or five years everybody knew about it and suddenly it's like. Oh Asians condense. When did you start going to these dance and I went? Let's see my cousin was going to San Diego State. And so she'd be like you have to come see this because you like dance and this is incredible and so. I want to say it was like two thousand six two thousand five. The collaboration or which dance competition was this They Will Aberration Star. Collaboration collaboration but there's also other ones but data for the first time. And that's when I did step up to I was like when I was creating sabotage like crews because I've seen these crews And Job Lock is like the. All Star like they weren't there was no ABC. At the time there was no nobody knew them they had never been filmed before so we got them very very early. But witnessing the shift of people seeing agents dancers and stink. Oh there can be the best. When you see these Korean dancers in those Uniqlo ads or in missy Elliott videos like it changed and I could see how fast that oh it just takes an example. I love that you have always seemed to love dance and music and sort of gravitated towards those areas in your work. Obviously I remember. I went to the set of your web series. You're super can't series the St shooting like a showdown seen in the town true we had. They're kicking us out in fifteen minutes so he just shoot like our whole last episode at fifteen minutes. It was insane. I was I was there. It was pretty great. And you really between that project and the step up movies and the Adam Chu dance crew. Which I'm GonNa make you explain to turn around and the Internet back then but you really seem to to be able to lean into these interests of yours but at the same time create company of talent like Harry Shum Junior. Got So many greats spotlights through your works with him and so many other dancers got on my rematch. Cast Nets smarr. All that stuff was crazy. It was crazy times. How did that like what? What kind of role did that project? First of all. How do you describe it now? Looking back I mean we were early and Youtube. There's two thousand seven two thousand eight. Maybe I don't know maybe two thousand eight nine somewhere around there and basically we had done step up to and Miley Cyrus had watched the movie and so she called our fourteen year old star of that movie atoms. Vanni who played Moose in the movie and left a message. He didn't answer he she him as I loved you in that movie congrats and didn't leave a number and so she's like fifteen or sixteen and he's fourteen. He calls me like. Oh my Gosh Miley Cyrus just called me. Can you get me her number? I'm like a I don't know how to get her now to call her age. He's like Yeah Asia. No I'm not going to do that but she was already had a youtube channel and we had already were thinking. Hey we should do some videos on youtube thing and so I was like she has her best friend. Mandy. Who's a dancer like? Let's challenge them to a dance battle and just challenger and maybe she'll answer because she knows who you are so we got our crew together and made this crazy video challenging her to a dance battle and two days later she answered and she had the biggest youtube channel at the time This is at the height of her sort of power. And when she answered us She got all her celebrity. Friends made it like music video and got included channing. Tatum and Jenna Dewan in their video. Which is kind of a slap in the face to us. We'll man dance battling real though we should. We should resolve more things. Thought those this was west side story digital like this real shit and people online like really got into it. People who hated Miley could be on our side and then people who love it could be on her side and we made another video. After and we pulled out our Rolodex we got like Sandler Lindsay Lohan. We got Chris Brown before the incidence of Diana. Ross Amanda bines before here incidents. We've got a lot of people. And then we got a huge amount of his we've got millions and millions of hits and at that time it was big and so then she answered again with like helicopters and Ryan secret and all these people about this whole thing which I remember it being just so huge but it's kind of an example of growing an Internet age community in a way very very like demonstrably has power. I mean you've also worked with Justin bieber twice and saw how how strong his phantom is. So it's kind of cool to see the Asian American community rally around Craze Rich Asians and that came out not that at all at all related to one another safe. You know all these I mean they are little bit though. That's that's what I wanted to ask about his Asian American dance crews and southern California's. Such a thing you know I went to Ucla. Watch them and it's so cool to kind of hear you talk about how. Yeah Yeah I mean I you know. And Jabber walkies like weren't they on like America's best dance crew or something like that but that was that was when like the world got to know them but before that they were in ACDC dance crew before they were actually as during while they were on there. They were in step up before they were ever On match you put you put the Jabber walkies on the map that you represented elsewhere. We film them for those for sure. I had already made my first studio movie and yet I still felt like when I would watch youtube. This is like energy and I reminded myself that. I didn't have to ask permission for anything like I could have a camera. I know how to edit and I ended all the. Are you to battle videos? I didn't have to answer to anybody. And that's an amazing confidence builder and powerful thing to know that you have at your fingertips and you can have millions of people watching it tomorrow. Not next week. When a marketing company goes not with the press release like just releasing it. There was a big lesson to me during that time knowing that I have no excuses not to make stuff at any moment that I wanna make

I mean, it's the woman who's saying with Neil diamond. I mean, come on. Oh, yeah. This is this is troublesome. I think it's media derangement. I'm going to stick with mediated arrangement. And now they are. They are easily pushed over the edge. Okay. Finally, a fielder's choice for your you wanna talk about the subpoenas showdown in DC or a little case of domestic terror happening in up in northern California. Well, the northern California's thing is is is up in the air. Because maybe PTSD the veteran baby, you know, it's obviously domestic terrorism, but by whom is kind of an interesting situation, but on the on the on this showdown executive privilege thing Donald Madan going to testify. At the house of judiciary committee. Trump says no I'm gonna fight the thing I've got executive privilege. He was an attorney in. We're talking to me, we've got all kinds of privilege communication. He can't talk about this stuff. But the reason that we and then come, you know, and then, of course, the house your district committee says well, wait a minute, you waive that privilege, which you can do by giving all that information to Muller in his investigation by allowing Mcgann to testify so affectively that he's mentioned one hundred fifty times in the report. So the position is no you waved it. Well, you know, it's lawyer talk in other words, you can't asserted now you at times past. Yeah. Except that your congress. You're not a a law enforcement. He was under subpoena from a law enforcement investigation. Now, I could have asserted it for that. But I didn't. But this is different. This is a different context. This is a whole. Different venue. I can assert it for you guys. Now that's going to be, you know, a Trump's position and some courts going to have to decide which of those physicians as the better merit. But in the meantime, Trump is just told congress, I responded to any of these subpoenas. And this is of course, going to be a huge showdown going to be a huge fight and one that will be tracking for the next number of days and probably weeks, Raj. It's going to be very interesting to see what happens between now and twenty twenty. All right. My friend have a wonderful night. And we'll pick it up again tomorrow, Roger Hitchcock. "UNLV basketball falling to San Diego State in the quarterfinals of the mountain west conference tournament today their season, it looks like it's over they're not going to be playing in the CBI or the or the ABC whatever tournament it is. I don't other just not it looks like the tournament this season for UNLV is over and, you know, say what you want, but he's still lose. No. By the way. No Rowbotham was atrocious today. He had a horrendous game today. Just terrible. He's not a great athlete. It's hard for me. Get a shot off you played while the last four or five years, but against a very very good defensive. Point guard or guard regards he's not he's not going to do. And he's he's he's gonna be very very ineffective, and he showed that today. And it's funny because everybody talks about juiston who I like who I think had a great year last year. But, you know, keep in mind when Joosten was healthy this team was formed four. So for those of you saying, well, you know, they lost their best player. You know? First of all, I think their best player is Maree hardy. I think he is best player juiston. Did not have a good start to the season. Again. The team was formed force when he comes back next year. How can you guarantee that all he's our savior? He's going to win some basketball games. Boise state's going to be good next year. JD they're going to be better. They're going to be good. Leon rice is a good coach San Diego State. They're they're going to be pretty good. They got a good recruiting class coming in Nevada is not gonna be very good Utah state's going to be fantastic. In fact, the player of the year. Sam Merrill is coming back next year. Yeah, he's Jewish. So those are three teams right there. I will tell you in my opinion are going to be preseason better than UNLV. So if they finished third or fourth in the conference next year may be lucky enough to get an IT in. Is that enough to bring them back for a fifth year? I mean, what are we talking about here? What are we talking about? What are we expect from our how can you say with a straight face that this is the right guy for the job? I just I don't know. How can anybody look union say he's the right guy? This is the guy that's going to bring us to the promised land. This guy is going to do what? Kroger, dan. How can you expect him to win any games against very very good teams next year considering his record over his career against top one hundred teams is three and thirty one. Well, that's just that UNLV Owen twelve I believe at New Mexico state against ranked teams. He's I believe if I'm not mistaken. Maybe you're right. Maybe you're right often look at that. But I know that in New Mexico state he'd never defeated top twenty five team. And he never wanted NCAA tournament game. He won one game against the top twenty five here. As the coach of UNLV. So that those are those are problems. And and he's had what thirteen losses been more than fifteen points. He gets blown out by teams that are some five years. Yeah. I mean, I can't think of a team they beat win conference that was over five hundred when you're when you're getting blown out by fifteen plus points four or five times a year. There's a real issue, and when people aren't attending your games, right? And when you're making excuses, he makes all the excuses. That's that's my my biggest problems. In fact, he hasn't just say, okay. Yeah. No. We're not that good. We've a lot of work to know. These guys are my babies we almost won the second half by eight points. He also talked about the officials today, which I don't think had any bearing in the game at all in the post game press conference, which is why I was running a little late getting over here. Let's see the press conference, and he talked about the officials J D. And you know, there was a play where I believe it was Hemsley or one of the San Diego State players got fouled shooting a three the defender. Got caught in the air. Okay. You can't get caught in the air on an up fake. You just can't now after the game Menzies didn't Menzies didn't flat out say the officiating was bad. He, but but he says it in a certain way to use it. Let me give an example. He said it today he said, well, we all need to get better coaches need to get better players to get any officials need to get better. And then he went into the officials and talked about, well, it's a really tough call to make you know, with the guys shooting a three getting fouled this game had absolutely zero to do with the officiating and everything to do with their lack of making shots and running an offense that can succeed. Because their offense looked horrendous today more so than even San Diego states, which was pretty bad. So that's that. Look, I'm pretty consistent with with my opinion on this. And I will be you know, I I hate to say this. But 'cause I'm going against what I think should happen. But I do believe that Menzies will be coming back next year. I don't think they're hiring and other coach which I think would be a tremendous mistake. And everyone says all you gotta get a big name. You've got to have a plan. You got to have a big name. No, you don't get a coach that can win get a coach that can turn this thing around. You don't necessarily have to have a, you know, a big name if you can't afford it. I mean in an ideal situation that would be great. We'd love to have a big name. We'd love Rick Pitino coaching this team. Right. We'd love a guy like that here. But there are plenty of good young coaches out there as Fresno state how they feel about their guy just in Hudson who is a phenomenal first year head coach phenomenal. What about what's going on at Utah state? What about Craig Smith phenomenal job? He's done. You can find coaches like that you can get coaches like that you just have to look for them. You have to search. You have to see which coaches are available. If you can't get Elaine wind assign a big check, then you're gonna have to find a coach like that. You gotta find a younger coach because that's a better option, or that's that's what makes it an eight talented successful AD. Right. He put the work in you, do your due diligence and you make a solid decision. That is the best for your program moving forward. That was probably not the case three years ago. And it's her job, by the way to find donors to to sign checks that is her job as the athletic director. And if she cannot find anyone to sign a check, which is what she's in a tough spot, not easy to find people that are going to sign big checks. These days the UNLV basketball program, maybe put some money into the science building. Maybe that's a little bit easier. But as far as the UNLV basketball program goes this is a tough task. Let's open up the phone lines against seven oh two to five seven five three nine six talking UNLV hoops again that number to call is two five seven five three nine six if you'd like to be a part of the program. Let's go to Scott, Scott. Thanks for calling in. How are you? What's up, Scott? Good. I guess the hardest part about watching, you know, be basketball. There's just. It's very hard to watch there. There's no rhythm. There's no flow. It you can win ugly. You can muck up college basketball games and win. But I don't I don't know what UNLV identity is. I just don't I don't know what they're trying to accomplish a guess, and we've talked about that Scott on the show you make a very valid point. We've talked about it. What is UNLV's identity? I have no idea. There's certainly not a running gun team. They don't run their half car offense, really sucks for for lack of a better term at times defensively. They're okay. But look at the opponents that they're playing, you know, I mean, you know, you play a team like a San Jose State or a Wyoming, a Colorado state how much credit do you want to give to how good you are defensively? They're they're they're in a they're in a very good position when they can out athlete their opponent. Like when Clyburn has has his lanes, and there's plenty of O'Brien for the guards. Yeah. Penetration. But against a good team with solid defensive structure. They're not going to beat anybody the game plan just is not good enough. So they're they're they're in a good position when they have the advantage. So Scott, what do you think you will be needs to do moving forward? What would you like to see happen to the? Program right now. The guys I can stroke it, you know, you need legit to guards who can come in there. And and and extend the defense, and I mean, it just looked like mechanical basketball, which I think the Clyburn is. Though, he's not he's not a one two or three released. Yeah. Well, what do you think about the swing man? What do you think about the coaching situation? Scott do they keep Menzies for another year? She look elsewhere. There's just no money. You gotta you gotta pay these coaches money. They they don't have the money to pay anybody else. See I logically that makes sense. All right. Thank you says less logically that makes sense. But Thad Matta, you know, he's still getting paid from his former job. I think you could get fat Ma at a decent price. There are coaches out there. This would be mad as probably fourth or fifth pick to coach I think you could get him at a reasonable price. I think you could maybe get Alfred for something close to what marvins getting because I think Steve Alfred wants to coach as well. I do believe that there are coaches out there that would take this job. I don't think Steve Alford is even as good of a coach Marvin Menzies he's a great recruiter. But he is not a good coach. I don't I've heard people say is not a great recruiter either. I've talked to some of my sources that that would say everywhere he's been he's given Iowa. He's recruited. Well. Well, I'll tell you what. This this Alford name I'll tell you what this program needs. They need to change. They need they need Dany a pulse. They need something. And what do you have to lose at this point? I mean when you got rid of Dave, right? She lost a lot of recruits, you fired a mid you had a lot to lose with that decision. What are you have to lose? If you get another coach who's gonna leave you think Houston's gonna leave fine. I think it's worth it. You need to you need to press the reset button here, and you need to bring the fans back in order to do that. I think you need to make a change you have to you have to at this point. You absolutely have to make a change. And if she doesn't make a change, I think she's making a mistake. And this is not personal. So stop it with the all you're just a Menzies hater, you're just a UNLV hater because some people on the athletic department would probably say that about me because I speak my mind, and I'm honest, I don't care. It is my opinion that this is the wrong guy for the job. And I said that at the end of last year, this is not the right guy for this job. I've never sat on the record that I think he's a horrible coach. I've never said on the record that he's a bad guy. I've never said any of those things I've never made it personal. I just talked basketball. And I think he is the wrong guy for the job for a lot of different reasons. I don't think he's recruiting the right players. I don't think he's getting the right talent. I don't think he connects with the fans and the people in this community, certainly not the way Dave rice and Lon Kruger did and it shows a and the racial epithets comment. He made didn't help his cause either. By the way, that pissed off a lot of fans, and rightfully so he is the wrong guy for the job. Period. I mean, I I can't if people out there disagree with me. That's fine. If you're happy with where the program is at and you think Marvin Menzies is making big strides and great progress or like you said it's like the last week. It's like building a house bright got to get the foundation, and we've got to get the roof on well, guess what the roof just came off today. A twister just came near houses gone. So I you got to start from scratch. The storm came in. And that was the San Diego State Aztecs, and they expose you for the atrocious. Offensive sets you have atrocious. You got beat by a basketball team. That is not very good. So enough about building a house enough with these analogies because it's completely ridiculous. I don't know what house. He's trying. I tell you what if he's building a house. He he just got a lot of bricks today. I'll tell you that got a lot of bricks to build that house. Marv it's going to be a brick house. That's for sure I can't even begin to tell you how many bad shots they took that had no chance of going in. I mean shots that had no chance of falling to sad situation. I'll tell you what I'm gonna do when we come back. We're going to get to the news of the day. This story is bothering me a great deal. Yes. What a shocker doesn't Volve Donald Trump. So we're talking about the release of the Robert Mueller report. And guess who is trying to block the vote to release the entire report? Done other than Lindsey Graham, th right? Unanimous vote four hundred twenty two zero Republicans Democrats they all want this to be released to the public. But Lindsey Graham didn't want to Lindsey Graham doesn't want public to know about this. Why is that?.

"They all know. Yeah, he's getting millions. But I mean, that's it that to me is just selfish. It drives me crazy that you guys. I can't see that at this, man. I'm naive. You're being naive as to why those guys went to Duke. They went to Duke because they were like, oh, this is going to get us the most exposure and give us the best chance to be drafted high. That's why they went to do. But when they try their about mind, not about winning a national champions. I mean, would it be nice? Sure. But I I don't think that they'll those guys are like, you know, what let's all go to Duke together and play for a national championship. And if we don't win one come back, and we'll win our soft more. You know, they said, let's go to Duke. Let's ball out. Let's get as much money as humanly possible in the draft. And let's go live our lives as NBA studs that that's what I think they said, I just wonder if you know if. Get blown out here. And they go on the ACC tournament. They don't win that. And they go into the big dancing. Get romped. You know, what happens to the stock of guys like bear and reddish to are. They still number two number three. Well, sometimes, you know, you're only as good as your last game. You know, they don't care about them. He he might not even make the the tournament. Moving along is move along. We got a couple of games left. Okay. San Diego State at number seventeen Nevada will call Nevada thirteen and a half point home favourite in this one, you know, what I'll lean this. I'll lead this game off. I lean San Diego State, plus thirteen half, this kind of a derivative bet I like CNN goes state in the first half though. And here's why Nevada's one of those teams has very a lot of seniors vary experienced for the Wolfpack eight seniors all and when it senior night, it's your final game. It's emotional. Maybe there's going to be a little bit of an adjustment early for Nevada Nevada early in the season very slow starting team to begin with. I get it. They have revenge, but man for a senior state team to begin double digits against a team. They've absolutely owned, and they even own Vada in this recent Ron Santo states won three straight over the Wolfpack. Even though in the last couple of years has been clearly head and shoulders the best team in the mountain west for the most part Utah state's got a little bit. Claim this year Nevada's been pricey five straight non covers for them senior stages blew a game against Fresno in the final minute. I don't know if you guys saw Aztecs are up six one minute left Fresno hits three Sam St. turns it over on three consecutive possessions and ends up losing the game game. They led by six which is a minute left. So I think that's a little bit misleading all in all I like San Diego State in the first-half little worried late, maybe Nevada turns it on. But I'm definitely on the San Diego states. I what say you AJ. Yeah. I I lean San Diego State, plus two points. Like, you mentioned they won three straight verse Nevada. They've won eleven of the last thirteen against Nevada Nevada their unbeaten at home eight and five against the spread their own five against the spread in their last five though, including the two outright losses, San Diego State, six two straight up against the spread and their last date, but they've been vulnerable away from home this season. And this is what worries me losses at Cal. That's a bad loss at Boise. That's a bad loss at air force at New Mexico. These are bad losses teams outside the top one hundred. And I I have maintained all season long that Nevada's overrated..

"I am honored to be back. You're my man. It's good to see. You. Naked is great to see a man it is it is huge Saturday. We a lot of things are going to be covering today. I wanna share some things right off the top. And and this is a personal thing. And I won't belabor it. But I just wanna make a point here before we get to all the major stories. We've got in the sports world today. On Wednesday and Thursday this past week Wednesday night, attended the San Diego State Nevada basketball game the Aztecs pulled the upset against the six ranked Wolfpack in Nevada twenty four and one twenty four one it's true. By the way, is the highest ranked team San Diego State at ever beaten. And they have a beautiful VA Selena down there in San Diego. And then Thursday night, it take my son Garrett to the Laker rocket game this one I dug deep into my pocket for some really good seats underneath the basket. And of course, you saw the end of that game. I mean, you know, what was seemingly a rockets blow out all hell breaks loose. He got the rockets being teed up there screaming about, you know, foster the official LeBron and Ingram they bring the Lakers back, and they got a must win for them. But the thing about it was for two consecutive nights. I was a fan and people are saying they say look I've been in this business over thirty years. I mean, forty years even want to go back to my college days, and they say how cool must've be that. You basically have a free ticket any game. You wanna go to? And I say you have to understand it's good and bad. The good news is. Yeah. I can get that free ticket. The bad news is I'm in the press section. Oh, it's like whether you're sitting in the press box or sitting impress row. Even if you wanna be offend. You can't be a fan. You basically just have to sit there and be an observer. Right. And I have never Nick. Pretended to be a sports journalist. I have never ever ever ever ever pretended to be. I am just a fan who happens to sit in front of a Mike every single day. And that has been my whole thing. My my whole thought about being a sports journalists is that's an oxymoron if you really want to be journalists. You're not in the sports world. The reason people go into the sports industry because we love sports, and I love being a fan. So I have been critical a lot of fans, I don't get all this money. People spend on going to the sporting. Why would you do that? You got the big screen high def and everything about why. Because they have it brother. But here's the thing after those back to back now, I don't remember last time I was able to actually be a fan of the game and it was on consecutive nights and insane games. And I was screaming at the officials. I was in fact at the Laker game thirty they had the Jumbotron was on me with a bunch of other people around me, and I'm like. I'm like, I actually am on TV all the time. Anyway, I went absolutely nuts. And I was like damn now. I remember why go fund at a game watching you right now. Your overall, gist expression. I have seen this on you because I'm Alina. Why it takes you to another place? It does all of a sudden, you're not judging anybody, you're not you're not. You're just looking at the game. And you're watching these tremendous athletes do their thing. And how cool is it to be like you said courtside? Yeah. Right there being able to watch that upset was it was back to back night being a fan. Nick was exhilarating. It was like it was like man, I'm back. Oh, come on and LeBron's activated. I mean, come on, well, the playoff Bush's in that look man that look once the Lakers started coming back against the rockets. They were down nineteen that third quarter buns. I started making a comeback. He was fully focus and got the other kids focused anyway, I was just an amazing week for me personally. Because I I got to be a fan, and it's been a long time since I you know, I was talking to some of the other guys. I wanna last time you actually just want to a game as a fan hard work in a game. And they're like, I don't remember. Exactly. So that's that's the like a little kid to me today. Oscar's leave. It is. It's a lot of fun. I got a lot of things that are going to be covering today. But I have to I'm going to start with a little baseball only because he was a it was a huge story this week on a couple of fronts with the Manny Machado signing by the San Diego Padres. And obviously we still are waiting now. What's going to happen, Bryce Harper? So obviously you played in the biggest mecca as a New York Yankee, it doesn't get any bigger than that, obviously. And you know, when the rumors are floating Monday, John Hayman, one of my dear friends in baseball was putting it out there. The Padres might put down a offer of two hundred fifty to two hundred eighty million dollars. And we're looking at this like sure, yeah. Okay. Yeah. Right. I mean, they already spent a hundred forty four million on Haase, and we're not gonna do it back to back years. And so this is a pipedream Lozano just throwing it out there, you know, trying to get a little more leverage with somebody else and then Tuesday happens and it's done. Manny Machado gets the richest free agent contract in the history of baseball. Yeah. Not the not the Red Sox. Not the dodgers the Phillies, the sandiego Padres just handed out the richest free agent contract in history. And here's what I want to ask you right off the top, Nick. So this idea of small market big market was thrown out the window. There's no such thing as small market the small payroll with the San Diego Padres proved is that everybody has the money. Yeah. And a lot of these so-called small-market teams they hide behind that saying, well, we we've just we can't afford those players and the potteries just blew that out of the water. And the fact is apparently now it's down between the Phillies the giants and the Padres to get rice hardly at what point as an organization. Do you say enough is enough right? Like how much money do you have to invest to say, you know, what you're talking big market small market. I think that really has to do with the media more than the money, right? Because I think. MLB major league baseball. I think netted twelve billion dollars. Yes. Right. And there is revenue sharing a major league baseball. Yeah. Exactly. Right. So you're looking at it. I couldn't believe it number. One dating Lozano was my agent and still a great friend of mine. And this is why I claim he is the best agent in baseball over Scott Boris because he didn't bring the drama, right? You didn't hear anything about Danny Lozano? You heard everything about Manny Machado because that's what it's all about in this whole Bryce Harper thing. You hear a lot about Scott Boris Scott Boras, Scott, it's not about Scott Boris at the end of the day about Bryce Harper getting to where he wants to be. And the greatest thing that I heard many Machado's mouth was this is where I wanted to be and has an ex athlete looking at it from that side that makes you feel great because I had the opportunity to go through free agency one time in my life. And I ended up in Cleveland, Ohio, which was coming home. It was amazing. I loved it. It was a place that I wanted to be. So I. Understand that made is in a good spot. Do I think that maybe they could have taken that money and split it up amongst a bunch of players maybe because I think signing a guy like Manny Machado. No offense to the San Diego. Padres organization. This is not going to win the division. Vegas had you going from sixty seven wins. So I think sixty nine wins. All right. I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna let let's not sandiego hold a bandwagon. First of all, I real quick. I'm gonna tell you right now. The potteries will win the World Series, Gavin and. Now, dick, I'm telling you right now. I approve I have proof that the San Diego Padres are gonna win the twenty twenty World Series. This is only the third time. I'm telling you. Me tell you this. This is only the third time in baseball history that a team has spent a hundred and forty million or more dollars in free agency in consecutive years. Remember, the gave the housing one hundred forty four million right before the only other two teams to ever do. This were the oh seven oh, eight Yankees who won the World Series, as you know, Nick in own nine. I remember the other team to do. It was the cubs in twenty fourteen in two thousand fifteen and they won the World Series in two thousand sixteen. So now, it's the Padres in two thousand eighteen twenty nineteen they will win the World Series in twenty twenty that fit right in putting the house a one hundred percent every time it's happened. I'll give you another stat. So baseball, America's rate of the Padres farm system. Number one in baseball. This is before the Machado side. Right. Correct. So if the last fourteen years the team that achieved that number one spot within two years of being ranked number one were in the playoffs. The only exception was Kansas. City. It took them three years, and then they were back to back World Series. Right GM, the one combination getting Machado and the number one farm system in all of baseball. Right. This is a team that's going to be dominant in the twenty twenties. Yes. It sounds awesome. Sounds odd. Sounds amazing. I mean, it's an absolutely Eric on paper. It's a lock right? It's going to happen. It's going to have the problem is is. When you get to the big leagues as a rookie. There's a lot of learning that needs to so, but doesn't talent went out. Not always. All right. So this Fernando Tateishi Kunar who just turned twenty years old. All right. He is a superstar. Yes. Even Chato said because remember when Machado came of the dodgers who was about playing shortstop that he wanted to play shortstop. Right. So a lot of people were like, well tha teases the shortstop of the future no-one Machado said by the way yesterday spoke of the media down there in Peoria, right? He used the word we about one hundred times was never me was never I. And he just simply said look as far as shortstop is concerned. If this team has somebody better than me at shortstop. I have no problem. Playing third base. He said, hey, my man, here's three hundred million. You're going to go right over there to third base in the next ten years dominate for me. All right. So you now have maybe potentially when the greatest fielding in feels ever you got hosmer afford time gold glove. I yes, he got a two-time goal Machado at third, and then these two kids the Thiessen areas the second baseman, this could this could be for Gold Gloves in your NFL. Pro don't you? Hope it happens. Were they got to? You can't guarantee that I wanna make a lot of youth. Now. Are going to be a better. Okay. Los Angeles Dodgers next year. Let me all right. We're in the go Fox Sports radio studios. Nick is not a believer. But I'm gonna tell you why I'm not a believer MIR trying to be realistic. The thing about it is you said you think the San Diego Padres stop right there. So this idea that a parental bad team bad franchise for fifty years that's their golden anniversary. Could suddenly be good. We're going to tell you why that is a real possibility coming up next. You stare.

"So this week we've had we've kind of focused on a couple of different episodes about trying to give younger people. I mean younger than you. And me who may just be now entering the real world vis-a-vis graduating from college or whatever or they're struggling to find their place in the real world. Maybe in their like early twenties early thirties. Whatever what advice do you have because you've had such an interesting career path. And now you grinding in in in writing for TV of for young people who are looking to find what it is. They're going to do in kind of how you fell into what were you now work? Well, I think for me I knew that from a new right around like sixteen or seventeen that I wanted to do something in writing. I didn't know what it was. But I knew I liked writing. It was literally like the only thing and to me, this is still the best gauge of whether or not you could make a career out of something is if you do when you're doing it for free you still enjoy it right now, it doesn't mean doesn't mean do it for free. But just when you are doing it for free in the start your career, you still enjoy like I was still writing for fun. When I was, you know, sixteen seventeen eighteen just like shitting stuff out who who knew what would be anything. But like I was in joying it, and it wasn't getting paid for it. And that was the first time in my life. Really that that had been the case. Like, I you know, I had my whole life had played baseball. And I played baseball in college. And I thought I wanted to try to be pro baseball player in college. I played at San Diego State. And and then I kinda realized when I got to me that was a pitcher. And when I got San Diego State to realize one that like, you know, there are people on my team who are better than me. And if there are people on my team who are better than me. Then there's there's a lot of people are better than me. And then I realized that that what it would take for me to get to their level or better than them was like an insane amount of hard work. And I just like didn't love baseball as much any exact The exact same same doing doing. that happen to me except it was in high school in. Instead of me noticing that there were people in my team that were better than me. I just realized smoking pot was really fun and practising practising hard for sports was less fun. So I chose the former. Yeah. Well, I think a lot of people on my college baseball team also show smoking pot. Pot is undefeated, basically. So so, yeah, I think it was like I realized, you know, fuck this is the only thing that I like doing for free. And it's because it's the only thing I like doing for free. Maybe I should try to make a career out of it. You know, and and the bummer of it was like, you know, I at I started working in restaurants because I couldn't get her in writing jobs, and I worked five six years in restaurants before I ever got paid anything to write. And even when I finally did get a writing job, it was it was on the internet, and I was making just a little tiny bit of money. But I, but I enjoyed it..
