The Skeptics Guide For Wearing Masks

"Roll come to this country. The Universe today is Wednesday July eighth twenty twenty, and this is your host. Steven Novella joining me this week or Bob Novella, everybody, Cara, Santa, Maria, howdy, and Jane, Novella Hey guys I've been. Bernstein is out this week. Is Neck deep in other people's taxes. Guys Do. You know what he's. He had like a weird like mid tax break which he's never had before. Pick about it right? Yeah I, think everybody did. Last night. So like screw this finishing this crap I hate it and also I think the thing. Is Nobody really knew what was going to happen, but a lot of people got hit super hard, which is why the tax deadline was pushed back so they're like I can't afford to pay my taxes right now, but maybe come July all be in better place financially. Unfortunately, a lot of people are even worse place financially now. There's just kind of kicking. The can down the road speaking of that Steve What are the latest numbers are not good. You know especially in the United States so worldwide. We've surpassed twelve million cases with over five hundred and fifty thousand deaths. In the U, s where over three million cases and Around, one hundred thirty thousand deaths, at least that number's always because probably more. And you know it's just in the US just exactly what we warned about. We're seeing the second hump in the first wave and the greatest number of new cases per day is happening right now. This is a greater surge than we had back in March and April, and this is what we talked about. What happens when we start to open up what happens if then cases start to surge again, what will be? Do you know people have lockdown fatigue? The economy's already taken a big hit from the first lockdown. Some states opened up too quickly. They didn't do it properly with enough testing and contact tracing. And now we're seeing this really bad second wave and the sad thing is. They're having to do it kind of haphazardly like they're the states where they said. Okay we want to reopen, so they never really fully lockdown or they did, but they only stayed lockdown for like two weeks, and then they were like okay bars. We got to reopen. We got to get the economy going. And now the cases are just bananas out of Control and so they're doing this like quick quick. Quick your mask back on, and it's kind of like it's haphazard. It's not clean. It doesn't feel as controlled. And I think that's where things really do. Fall through the cracks, and then, of course we have this whole. Political Anti Mask Movement. That does seem to correlate with some of the same states where we're seeing these spikes. We definitely see in California. I mean you know in more conservative districts, but there are sort of marbled in California, so I definitely hear it even in L. A., it's not as common but. Not that Far Away San Bernardino County's very close, and you see the people. Holding angry signs and it's just. Did you guys hear that they did? A study showed that if they mandated mask you have. Made it pretty much requirement? Everyone wearing masks in public that they could save forty five thousand lives over the course of I'm not sure what the course of the period the period of time would be I think like three or four months. Five thousand I mean if that number that was that was fairly solid number. Would what else would you need but like okay, then we're. We're doing this. You have to wear a mask in public period. Almost the Vietnam War right there. Yeah, no more was fifteen thousand so imagine we could save the same number of lives lost over ten years the Vietnam War just by wearing I think it's such a profound number that we're not even equipped intellectually to really understand that that much right like I don't know forty thousand people I can't picture forty five thousand people sitting in a room I don't know what that looks like. I look like a baseball football stadium. Wouldn't that be roughly? Park, speech larger than the student body of my Alma Mater and speaking of masks. Study this week very that people might be interested in, so they just compared different types of masks, and how well they work, and of course the ones that you think should work the best do right so the ninety nine masks supposed to stop ninety nine percent of the virus were the best followed by end ninety five of course block, Ninety five percent of the virus, and their tests show that those numbers roughly accurate. And then followed by surgical masks, so they were the next, so those are the ones that healthcare workers are using, and they do work the best for the homemade ones they said was the best so actually interestingly, using vacuum cleaner filters was the best like homemade option. Just make a little pocket in your mask. You put those filters in there, and you can replace them like if they get moisture used. And that was the best using any kind of a close. We've. tight-knit cotton was good. They said what did not work is wearing. A scarf doesn't really do much to the only a slightly better than no mascot, all or a t shirt like pulling a t shirt up over. Your face doesn't work very much at all either so stick with the. multi-player cotton, and if you put a filter

"Became aware that there were public health officials who had a meeting with that governor Newsom recently and they they said said that that a a state state wide wide mass mass border border was was under under consideration consideration by by the the governor's governor's office office that that they they were were told told that that unequivocally unequivocally there there were were a a lot lot of of people people of of the the complained complained that that every every county county considers considers wearing wearing masks masks differently differently and and you you know know what what let let me me just just kind kind of of go go through through this this because because it's it's all all going going to to change change now now since the governor has indeed issued that order it's no longer something he's contemplating he has done it he has issued a statewide order that people have to wear a mask that I need to get a copy of what the order is and we'll see if we can that come up with that pretty quickly so that we can find out exactly what that means and where and when people are required to wear mascot where masks in the state of California but the way that it has been here in the bay area almost all counties have required masks San Francisco county Marin county Alameda San Mateo Contra Costa and sin noma all require masks San Francisco's order requires people to wear masks when writing transit working at essential businesses grocery shopping and other activities where they will be near other people in Santa Clara county they only recommended that people wear masks Los Angeles and San Diego counties which are the state's largest I didn't realize San Diego is the second largest county in the state they both require people to wear masks in public riverside and San Bernardino counties created mask requirements but then they walked away from them in Orange County they were mandating masks but then the public health officer down there doctor Nicole quick received threats for issuing that order she quit as a result of the threats that were coming in and then Orange County downgraded its mask requirement to a recommendation lord have mercy the way people respond to this and and Newsom on Monday he recalled the second wave of the Spanish flu which was more deadly than the first he said it is incumbent upon us as individuals to be smart to wear a face covering to physically distance to continue to wash your hands and continue to do things that are necessary to avoid that second wave he said it's one thing to be outside it's another to be inside for an extended period of time without the ability to move around and move away from people this I suppose is a one of the things that guided him there was a state senator from a Renda his name Steve Glazer he's been pushing for a statewide mask order he's a guy who said that it's an issue that should not be dependent on county choice Stanislaus county was considering a mask order now they're not going to have to do that because the state is going to do it instead Sacramento county officials were also considering their recommendation to become a requirement

The Jesus People

"This episode of five minutes in Church history. Let's just go back into the recent past about fifty years ago or so. So and the founding of the Jesus people are sometimes called the Jesus Movement or sometimes called Jesus freaks these folks began in nineteen sixty eight in California. This was the era of the Hippie. These hippies descended upon southern California and some churches there and some Christians there decided they would reach out out to these hippies and bring them to Christ and so we have the beginning of the Jesus Movement in Nineteen. seventy-one Billy Graham. I'm was invited to be the Grand Marshal of the Rose Parade and as he sat in his float and it made its way down towards the Rose Bowl. He noticed that the streets were lined with literally hundreds of these long haired youth holding up one finger. Their Index Finger pointed to heaven with the one way sign and and that was the sign of the Jesus people. This caught Billy Graham's attention and he wrote a book called the Jesus generation that year went through many printings and sold well over a half half a million copies and put the Jesus people on the map of the media and on the map of the American church. Well what can we make of this phenomenon of the Jesus people well I we have to see that. They had a huge impact on American evangelicalism. They both reflected trends in American evangelicalism. Awesome and they also set some new trends. They tended to be very pentecostal. They focused very much on signs and wonders. And they were fixated on these supernatural super-natural experiences that they had an would share with each other. Secondly they totally changed the look of the church. These are not folks wearing suits and sitting in pews. These were tank top short flip flop wearing kids. Who would sit cross legged on the floor? But it wasn't always how they looked it was is also how they approached Church found this fascinating article from December. Twenty five nine thousand nine hundred seventy one in the San Bernardino County Sun Sun the newspaper for Hollywood and the article reads Pat Boone's home swimming pool used for baptisms Beverly Everley Hills California. It was actually picked up by the and the first sentence says in the swimming pool behind his magnificent home in posh Beverly Hills Pat Boone. Baptises the repentance. The article goes on to talk about within about six months time. Well over two hundred and fifty baptisms took place in Pat Boone's swimming pool and number of those baptisms were of musicians and that takes us to another significant impact of the Jesus people well. It was really here that we have the birth of what we call. CCM Christian contemporary music or the birth of Christian rock. Those early Pioneers and Christian Rock. We're Randy Stone Hill. And Larry Norman in fact it was. Larry Norman who published the song or wrote the song. Why should the devil have all the good music? Even even some secular artists got in on the mix. Paul stookey of Peter. Paul and Mary produced his Christian albums in the same era. This was the time. We're calvary chapel. Founded founded Maranatha in the Mirror Anathema label and that launched the praise and worship and course phenomenon. There's so much a part of American evangelicalism today. It all started there in one thousand nine hundred seventy among the Jesus people will lastly as we talk about the Jesus people what we see as they were very much less counter cultural and more within culture this was is true not only of music but of all forms of the arts and a forms how they approach the church. It was the Jesus people who launched not not only Christian music they really launched the Christian bookstore industry of the nineteen seventies and they launched so much that happened in the nineteen eighties with jackals locals getting involved in politics. Well what happened to the Jesus people. They SORTA faded in the one thousand nine hundred eighty S. I had a church history professor. who used to say what happened to them? While they all cut their hair started families and became insurance salesman. Well who knows but we do know that they left quite an impact on the American scene on the American aircon. Church in on American evangelicals. Well that's the Jesus. I'm Steve Nicol. Thanks for listening
