"samus" Discussed on The Jason Beem Horse Racing Podcast

"Are available to you. All right back here on the Jason bay horse racing podcast brought to you by twin spires and pleased to welcome our next guest who's a television analyst Tandy caper. Sam Houston race park, which opened up this past week. He's also a member of the NHC Hall of Fame as qualified 20 consecutive times for the NHC very happy to welcome on trade styles to the show tray how are you? I'm doing wonderful. Thank you for that wonderful intro there. I mean, that's you. You did that. I guess so. I did all those things. You were right. It's a funny thing, isn't it? You do stuff long enough eventually. You get like a resume. It works out, but opening day in the books. And I know no opening day or week is ever super smooth, but how everything go for you guys down and Sam Houston. Yeah, well that's absolutely right. Open day over a little kinks on some video and whatnot early on, but that got ironed out and then we had The Rain on the last day that shut things down at the end of the Saturday card lost the last two races. So nothing good about that. So it was a really kind of a phenomenal show here in Houston that day. You know, it's funny, the weather thing I had read kind of all day Saturday that it was raining and not looking good for the night and then by the time the races started like it was fast and I think you guys were still on the turf. Does that course generally handle weather pretty good? I mean, I know when you get a lightning storm with a different beast, but it does. And I'll admit I'm one of the ones that was responsible for spreading those false rumors. I live about, I don't know, it takes me less than half an hour to get out of the track. And from where I was, there was no way they could have run on the turf. Sloppy, but apparently up there held on and when I got there for the races, I was it looked great and I actually made it through the I was watching outside with my son actually that turf race I think it was the 7th of the turf race and it kind of started to sprinkle but not only did we get all the races in. I mean we even got the turf race in and then the lightning started and then all heck broke loose and but yeah, the course does pretty well. I mean, I was talking to Frank Hoff, who's the GM there and he actually showed me around some on the turf course. It's having a little trouble, I think, with that kind of crazy weather. Hotter than normal. So he's kind of taking it easy on some of those. Hopefully that'll pick up soon. We'll have more turf racing because I know everybody likes that. That's one of the draws for samus. Yeah, and field size two fields, I just always seems like it's better on a turf this weekend at Tampa. You know, we've kind of been it's like every turf race is ten or ten or full field and then you get dirty 6 7 8 and we kind of had some good luck with dirt racing this weekend with big field. So that was kind of refreshing just 'cause it seems like turfs where a lot of the guys want to run. And it's funny talking about the drainage with weather, like we ran into that at colonial where it can handle a lot of rain. It's just, if so much comes at once, that's where it just kind of gets out of control for those courses, but glad to hear that your guys is ended up doing it all right. As far as on the track, you know, we saw kind of an interesting mix of a few big prices throughout the weekend a number of short price favors and I talked about this a little bit earlier on the show. It seems like a lot of betting at Sam Houston is kind of deciding when to play the asparagus bro bergs caldwells of the world and when to try to beat them because you're going to have to beat them at some point because they're always favorite in a lot of races. That's absolutely right. And there were those two broberg and ethnic and just have so many horses and they get bet so hard though. You really are tempted to try to beat them because you know some of the money's on just because that's who they are. But on the other hand, if you leave them out and you're trying to strength them all these together, they show up. So it makes it hard. We did have a good mix. It was a pretty good prices for the most part over the weekend. A couple of strings where I think I had to pick three to pay $11 or something, but for the most part, even though I think Saturday I mean, huge payoff is the early pick four pay 2900 or something like that for 50 cents. I think that yeah, like I said, I just think with those guys because I don't think you want to ever be going three deep with prober or gas with sit and just to get 9 to 5 and get through the leg. I think you either got to kind of pick one and ride or die or try to try to beat them kind of thing. To me, it just seems like very either or a lot of times. Yeah, there's one race that I remember walking around in the Clubhouse and the prices came up and I think as missen was 9 to one and burg was second at 7 to one. Like, how does that happen? $100 exactly and those two are like everybody jumps on those normally, but. Yeah, by the way, I should say it's certainly not exclusive to Sam Houston. I've noticed in Texas I mean lone star was kind of like that a little bit too. And those guys are obviously tough to beat. Let's talk a.

"The core ox are fun, cool, but I don't need 10,000 of them. You know what I mean? Just give me all the ice. Maybe make Zelda playable. I think that would be really fun. But you know Zelda's gonna Zelda and Nintendo's gonna Nintendo and, you know, it's gonna win all sorts of awards, regardless of what they do. That's true. Do you think they will do something similar to halo two where you switch characters depending on the story? So we'll be one time you will begin your play link and then Zelda late in the game. Yeah, so that was one of my predictions when you got the first trailer. It was that one that the arm was going to be when a link's new shticks into that Zelda will be playable. And you know how games drop little hints here and there. It's all his hair if you look in the trailer, it's short. You know, I think she's kind of done B in this feeble princess that she was depicted as in breath of the wild and now maybe she's ready to kick some ass. In a way, we have seen a tropa that we've seen developers portray characters as they cut their hair short. It's just a thing. And with her hair being short now, maybe, you know, hair won't be so hard to animate. I don't fucking know what the reason for that is. But either way, yeah then that was one of my predictions was that she will be a playable character. Maybe in certain situations or maybe in certain puzzles only like who knows, but I'm still gonna hold on to that. I'm gonna hope. It's about damn time. Yeah. Yeah. That would be a game changer for the series. Huge game changer that happens. Oh, we wanted to playable Zelda for so long. And I Zelda for being the fucking title legend is Zelda. She's just such not a flesh out character. We don't know much about her and who she is. Every Zelda game is different. I get it. It's a different Zelda every time. But it's almost like Nintendo has weak female characters. Did I say it? What about Sam is from metroid? But do you really think that samus is actually a fleshed out character? I mean, don't get me wrong, she's a strong character in the metroid series, but as far as like a narrative deep dive into who she is and her thoughts and emotions and motivations, I feel like she's pretty character light. Or do you feel like that's not a fair characterization? It got a game of the year awards, you know? Got nominated. It's a Nintendo thing. Look at Mario and Luigi, honestly, too. Are they fleshed out characters? No, of course they're not. That's true. Yeah, it's a thing. But like poor peach. Oh, man. Who knows what's really going on inside that girl's head? Or daisy? What's going on with her? What about yossi? She's like a glorified pet. Yeah. I hope you know she gets lots of therapy on a weekly basis. I mean, the original story, I mean, Nintendo never promoted this, but when he popped up and Super Mario world, he was actually hitting Joshi. He was not like petting him or anything like that. No, we talked about this on what's good all the time about he literally the whole time. He always drops him down ravines to yeah, it's all good. Yeah. He's abusive, man. Yeah. Yeah. Well, that's a conversation for another time. We are supposed to be talking about our most anticipated games of 2022 and Rihanna. You kind of have an interesting pick. Do I feel like it's a hopefully popular pig? I hope other people are excited for red fall. It's another Bethesda game coming from arcane. The pedigree is absolutely there. And I mean, I have a personal love for one of the characters that we saw that looks a lot like me, black woman with purple hair who complain about her student loans and her dialog options. She was like, it me. It's me. But yeah, I'm excited for a four player co op game. You're fighting vampires. That seems cool. I'm always for zombies mode and hoard action. And teamwork, getting three Friends together for some shenanigans late at night and I don't know, I just really want to get into the lore of this new creation from arcane and figure out what's going on with them. I know arcane has been killing it lately with their storytelling, obviously we've all been excited for everything that they're working on. They're very busy. Yes. Well, they've expanded. Yeah. Which is great. And clearly they had a big year with death loop. And I've been a big fan of the games that arcane makes. And I'm interested to see how they handle multiplayer because we haven't really seen that in this way from them before. So I think they're gonna soar or it's gonna be a little rough. You don't know. We'll see. We'll have to see how it goes. Definitely a big one. Bakery. Yikes. Yeah. I mean, we have to talk about. I don't want to call it. I don't want to call it the elephant in the room called the God in the room. Dad of four. Dad of war. God of War ragnarok, of course, is slated to come out in 2022, PlayStation pulling no punches with both horizon and God of War in the same year, allegedly. Fair. Hopefully God of War doesn't get pushed. Because horizon, I think, is definitely coming out. Yeah, that's not 22. God of War? Could potentially get pushed, but it looks like it's pretty far along development from what we've seen from trailers so far. I was just smitten with God of War on PS4. I have called it several times a masterpiece of video game making and really the de facto reboot of all reboots. If you're going to kickstart your franchise, got to where I think is a tent pole to look at of how you do that, how you get new players in, how you can revamp what was previously a very unlikeable character and some very unlikeable narrative storylines and bring new people back in and make it humanized and really let players think their teeth into it in a way that was not really possible in the previous game. Obviously the early games in the franchise did some really cool things mechanically and I think those games have always looked really good and from a game development perspective have done some really cool innovative things. They're one of the first games that I've vividly remember that hid loading screens behind cutscenes and that felt like a very new fancy thing that not a lot of games could do, but that Sony Santa Monica did. And the release on PS4 felt so seamless. When you played it, I didn't ever really see any loading screens ever in that game..

"Feel. His feel isn't bad. He's not going to get tennis since the game most likely. But he sees the open guy knows how to swing the ball. His defense is way underrated, I thought he can guard one through 5 almost, which makes him extremely valuable and this kind of modern MBA. And his athleticism, speed footwork, you mentioned kind of that baseline shot. His post work, which is something that we'll see as we evolve very few guys can post up, but in the switching NBA, could he punish a small if you throw it on him? He's pretty good at that. Maybe one of the best on our team at that. But it's 19 years old. I mean, literally turn 19 two months ago. On October. So this guy was you probably should be a freshman in college right now. I mean, most guys that were drafted around and that are a year older than the top 5 top 6. So we think at the draft at the top, when you build a team, the difference between a star and a role player, the teams that win or a great, it's your best players that differentiate you. You can't ever win with a bunch of role players. And I'm not talking about this draft or any other player in particular, but our beliefs, you have to take swings. On guys that could become stars at the top. And you might get right, make it wrong. But if you get it right, and all of a sudden, three, four, 5 years down the road, you have an all star, right? Or in all NBA guy. That is so hard to find that you have to try. Problem is now we're drafting 19 year olds that have played limited games. You don't really know who they are work ethic wise. You and I at 19, we didn't have any, we were probably a mess, to be honest. Even though who we were, our work ethic, how we would deal with money, success, pressure, so that's the hardest thing we do. It's not necessarily watching their physical abilities, it's seeing what they'll become mentally. I think the biggest challenge. But what we saw in kuminga was great upset is a great kid. And on our team, he's just not going to get the same run. But, you know, it's coming. If you watched him behind the scenes and saw him and that seemed as much as we would, you would probably be I'm not trying to sell them, but I think it's gonna be a really good player. No, I am not taking it that way 'cause I think you said something really smart about jaylen Brown is that when I talk to the Celtics after the fact about jaylen, you know, just to be at the combine and you run into somebody and be like, hey, what'd you see with jaylen? Because it was pretty messy at Cal. And it's a lot of the same things that you're saying about can make it not that they're the same profile of player, but it's the profile of the pick of like, hey, kind of where you're at in the draft, looking at the other options around it. Physically, does this guy project? If he figures the basketball part of it, right, is like a really, really special kind of, again, movement is a word I use a little bit too much, but I get it. I get the similarities there of like, this guy has a chance though because he fits some of this profile stuff that we'd like. I don't want to say on that anymore because I want to finish with this one. You said something at the top that I thought was really interesting, so I wanted to circle back to it. You're putting together this legendary run, finals 5 straight years, and he said he didn't really enjoy it. How do you enjoy it now in comparison to when you were winning all the time and you somehow weren't enjoying it? What have you done for yourself? I'm not sitting on succeeding. I'm trying. You know, probably being a little older and I'm old, but looking back, it's kind of like you get to do, maybe this is a bad example, but we always talk about it. If I could go back to my senior year of high school, you know, you look back and I wouldn't have worried so much. I would have just enjoyed it more. Look around. I think when we went to our first finals, I called Sam presti, and I said, Denny, I called a few people called Mitch, called Pat Riley and I called samus and any advice, and they all had very different guys. So they all had different advice. Pat was mostly about how to win..

"Really, really messed up, and also there's some other stuff happening at mercury's theme, which is really weird as well. Roberto majes also says that a non appearance in the credit may be related to his departure from the company. Mercury's theme includes a clause in the contract in which it requires a notice period of 42 working days. When they told me this, I investigated a little, and I discovered that workers statute establishes 15 working days as a minimum noticed. So that also will impact kind of like if people are having to give or eat two working days of notice that could impact how long the 25% as well and also that's just a really awful clause to have in a contract. Yeah. Apparently, yeah. So how do you feel about that? And it kind of like, it does suck to hear that as this a dampener on what is otherwise an amazing game. And you would hope that Nintendo would step into some degree and be like, what the hell's going on here? Yeah, this is pretty wild. It's wild too that this isn't the first of this type of story we've had even in the last month or so, you know, the video games industry. I think this is a recurring trend in terms of not crediting people who have worked on games because either they weren't there for shipping it. Or they were only there for 8 9 months to a year, which is a pretty sizable portion to be working on a game for that long. You know, I think after a year, you deserve to have your name on the credits. Even after a few months, if your work is appearing in that game, you know, that is important because people take that stuff. People take their credit their work on things and they use that to apply to other places. They use that to make the case for, hey, I did art for X Y and Z game. Let me come work at BioWare. Let me come work at blizzard. Let me come work at whatever X company to not have their work credit to have their work appear in the game and not have that word credited is taking away that opportunity from them. Them being able to say, hey, look at this. This is proof that I worked on this thing. This is my work history. That sucks. And then also the clause of having to have a notice period of 42 working days. That is, I've never heard of anything like that before. I didn't know that was a thing. That blows my mind in that can not be okay, that is a shocking thing. And yeah, I mean, the solution here, I would think is, you know, we always talk about unionization and how important that is for the video games industry. So I'll say, yeah, that is the first step. But then also, yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if a Nintendo or somebody would step in and be like, hey, this isn't okay. If you continue to do this, we can't continue to work with you in this way. 'cause that is, that is crazy me. Yeah, I mean like I'm on the extreme end of the case where I'm like, if you had any sort of contribution to that game to help it go from idea to fruition, like you should be credited to it. It doesn't matter. Because you contributed to bringing that thing to life. And if you're going forward into another place where you're going to use those same skills to try and get a job working on another game, you need to be able to point to that and say, hey, this is something that I have done before and you can see it because here's my work. But if they can't look at it and say, here's my work because you're not listed. That sucks. It doesn't matter how long 25% is bullshit. I think I would put it at 1%. If you're working on it and you give a 1% contribution to that game, you should be credited for it. That is exactly what needs to happen. And it is unacceptable that they think that you need to hit a threshold because in that, let's say that 1% was coming up with some key design idea that changes the entire game. Let's say that one plus let's say you work for 10%, but you came up for the idea for their Emmys. Like, yeah, and you're not credited? That sucks. That's awful. Let's say that you work 23%. And your design is samus's new suit. That is awful. I mean, obviously, this is an extreme end of it, but like multiple people contribute to it, but if you're being removed from being able to claim and point to your work, because you're not hitting an arbitrary number set by a company. That's ridiculous. As unacceptable. And obviously it's going to have an ongoing impact on the kind of perception around that studio now. And that game. And it's going to have a knock on effect on Nintendo who are now going to be having to run defense on this game because of choices taken by this company. If I was at that studio, I would be doing everything in my power not to screw up the bag when you know if someone hangs you metroid and the moment I'm handed metroid, I'm like, we need to make sure there is nothing going on in the studio that any point in time someone can say this sucked because we are about to take one of the biggest franchises in the world and we're about to make a new game. We can do it good. And this is going to be massive for us. So we don't want that no well-being polluted by some poison that someone drops in. And this is this is exactly what's happening. Yeah. Especially coming off of the last few story. We were talking about how good that metro game is doing. We were talking about your hopes for the future of the franchise. We're like, I'm right there with you where the I love that Nintendo does the thing where they are like, hey, we have Mario. Let's put out a 3D Mario..

"Vivo china construction. Bank and julie have all been trialing volcano engine over the past year. Yeah this kind of got lost in the wash last year but it resurfaced in a couple of places today and i think it's worth talking about the day after the us rescinded the executive order against tiktok which one of the reactions to that might have been them licensing out there engine to oracle To operate They they come up with this plan. So rich lino put together a lineup. Today produce produced things for us suggested that this this may have been an idea that bytedance got while going through that process of like well if we don't have to like if we're not forced to licensed out there there's an amazon web services equivalent for us here maybe maybe we could take this algorithm and instead of having to hand over the source code we could license out its operation as a web service to people and i think that's really smart really smart especially since you know tiktok it know it's the hot new thing in many ways for social network those like me who hang up on tiktok enough to be like god. It's why does it no me why is my for you. Page the way that it is yet mostly accurate knows that like yeah there. Is that kind of special sauce. Coin almost algorithm. When i i was thinking about the stray i was like i wonder if tiktok thinks the special sauce days of the algorithm are numbered and so the company bytedance might as well make a little money licensing the special sauce out to other companies. Because it'll get replicated eventually anyway but but yeah i mean i think it's i think it's inevitable that they're going to be companies that want to pay for this and it's good revenue stream and they're yeah there's probably some political element to it too that the company had been batting something like this around and was ready to go now. I see this as a huge thing for tiktok. Not just for your. Here's another revenue source. But they're gonna know what everyone else is doing with the algorithm. And how is that going to feedback in tiktok or any future offerings. They have. That's a very good point. This this could improve the algorithm and and to that point. Avoid sarah what may be motivating it like ou our algorithm. You know people are catching up. Let's license it out and then that will improve it so we actually stay ahead The the that could contend well one of the hottest topics over this last pandemic era. We've been in has been the benefits and drawbacks of remote work and how hybrid work. Maybe the best of the to at least for some workers in some bosses with anecdotal evidence abounding. We're only starting to see more. Rigorous studies being published about the impacts of our collective change in working habits. Michael gibbs frederick mangle and christoph seem roth at the university of chicago released a working paper describing their study of remote work of ten thousand employees of an asian. It services company between.
