"To check in with rob woodfork I'm Michelle the wizards were down by 8 at halftime We are now in the third and they are down by a lot more It is 80 to 64 with three minutes to go in this third quarter and the wizards actually led this by 6 after one quarter but bad three point shooting and low post defense is killing the Wiz and 68% foul shooting isn't helping either So the 76ers in firm control of this one as we are about to hit the final quarter in D.C. Now the biggest game of the year for the Washington football team is mere minutes from kicking off they will take on a Dallas Cowboys team that has actually already clinched the NFC east title ahead of kick-off That's thanks to oddly enough the Raiders win over the Broncos They play in a completely different conference and yet clinch the division for the cowboys their first division title since 2018 so the burgundy and gold looking to pull off the upset here without Jamie Davis at linebacker he reported COVID like symptoms to team doctors before the game he will be inactive out of an abundance of caution joining him on the inactive list tonight Curtis Samuel William Jackson and Brian Johnson the latter meaning that Joey sly is back at kicker for Washington Antonio Gibson by the way he is in the lineup along with that ailing to just your fantasy lineup accordingly 6 and 8 Washington needs this one after the eagles blew out the last place giants so at 8 and 7 Philly is in the 7th and final spot in the NFC playoff picture entering that rematch between the two teams at FedEx field next week In the AFC the Baltimore Ravens playoff hopes well they were fading after a 41 21 loss in Cincinnati Joe burrow 525 yards four touchdowns That was the fourth most passing yards ever in an NFL game but even with the four straight losses for the 8 and 7 ravens they're now in the 7th and final spot in the AFC because the rival steelers lost in Kansas City in a blowout where the chiefs by the way clinched their 6th straight AFC west title Rob would fork to believe TOP sports All right Robin coming up after traffic.

"Atmospheric conditions climate is the weather of a specific region averaged over a long period of time. So when we're talking about climate we're talking about long term change whether is not the same thing climate and so what we want to talk about. Today is climate. There are obvious reasons for doing so. Obviously the wildfire problem in the west is huge. There have been millions of acres that have been burning in the united states this year. I think actually that as of september first more than four point five million acres have burned in the united states and california has been hit the hardest and right now actually. The kaldor fire is blazing out of control. I think it's destroyed over one hundred ninety thousand acres and is just sixteen percent contain so we have the fire problem and the fact that that's a reoccurring problem and of course we have hurricanes generally and tornadoes actually and hurricane ida which may landfall in louisiana as a category four hurricane with winds up to one hundred and fifty miles per hour and then made its way to the east coast where it smacked up against a variety of different states along the east coast. I was in new york city. For part of it and was bemused a little scared by the fact that all i saw all over social media where people saying wait wait flood warnings and tornado warning in new york city. Like really that. This doesn't happen here. So what we want to talk about is climate. How over time we've thought about climate. However time people have changed their views about what it is who controls it and how or if it can be controlled and maybe more than anything else. How do we frame our understanding of climate. And why is that important when you're talking about climate as environment. I'm sitting over here thinking we're gonna be talking about climate is environment but also as politics and social life because i think he can make a really good argument that america has formed itself identity in part around the idea that americans can do whatever they want. And that's a theme that we'd like to take through the course of this podcast talking about how that's changed over time. And how the way we react to the climate and interface with the climate says a lot about who we are at any one time and we have to start with the obvious place joanne. Which is a minute half ago now. I'm kidding which is The colonists in america and how they approach the landscape and what. They thought that the landscape meant when they found that the way they did. And you know in a sense. This will not be surprising to many but given that the colonists and then the early united states was a a nation defined one way or another by land. Climate and weather were both things that were very much on people's minds all the time the assumption or one of the things that supposedly set the united states and the colonies apart from europe and the rest of the world was the availability the seeming availability of land. Which of course is erasing all of the indigenous people who lived on that land but still that was seen as one of the distinct supposed- advantages of settling in north. America and spreading colonization west in north america and when the colonists arrive after the virgin soil population epidemics that really decimate the indigenous population. What they find is a land that looks to them. Like an eden mean there are coming from especially for talking here about the english colonists coming from a land where there was a real shortage of food and there weren't any trees because they've have all been cut down you come to the north american coastline and you find rivers teeming with fish just teeming with fish and trees everywhere and and even places in plymouth colony for example when the settlers i start exploring the land around the cape Around what is now cape cod. Finding caches of food in the ground. Of course that had been buried by the indigenous people but who were now dead so the colonists start to look at this what they consider a new land of course ancient land with people who always lived here but they look at that and that helps them to define what this land and their relationship to it is going to be absolutely although the counter side of that so on the one hand for sure there's forms of wildlife they hadn't even seen before there are amounts vast amounts of everything because they hadn't been farmed in the same way that they had been forever in europe but the weather just the atmosphere the fact that particularly in new england it was cold and to them too many people barren and harsh and seemingly primitive there were ways in which the weather felt off pudding to people and so i think what we're going to see a lot throughout this episode. What you end up having is people thinking about the climate and thinking about the weather trying to understand and make sense of it and then coming up with a narrative that kind of suits the mind frame of the people at the time so in the case of early new england and actually just north america. Generally there was a popular belief that the climate could be changed by civil moment. Surprised by colonization and settlement. And that the more that you farmed land and drained marshes and cleared forests and cultivated soil. The better the climate would be and are a number actually in in researching this today. What i discovered is that for some reason. Harvard had cornered the market on people. Who are actually totally persuaded. That this was a true fact. There's a. There's a harvard professor named samuel williams who wrote change of climate in north america and europe and seventeen eighty nine and he said every climate is becoming more temperate and uniform. He's thinking about the rise of what he would have seen a civilization and he said this will continue to be the case so long as diligence industry and agriculture shall mark but conduct of mankind so productivity defined by a sort of settler slash colonist point of view in their mind was away that humankind could control the climate and make it better also noteworthy though in this period is the fact that climate was linked up with questions of race. And the idea very early on another harvard. Professors i said they cornered the market. He williamson seventeen seventy one. He immediately links climate with the color people's skin. He's not the only one to do so. But in speaking about north america he wrote while america remained a great forest inhabited by savages. Which tells you what they considered. This place was before settlers arrived under the constant dominion of westerly winds. There was not any climate on the eastern coast in which we could expect a fair skin by the progress of cultivation the general course of the winds is materially affected and in the process of time we may expect such a prevalence of easterly winds near the coast in those states shall prevent the tendency of complexion to the clear brunette to dark skin which prevails in temperate climates in other parts of the world so basically in a variety of different ways these early settlers and north american sinkers are assuming they can change the climate for the better that their presence in the ways in which they're manipulating the land will make that change and in the course of doing that will make bowland more friendly towards people of their complexion to quote williamson and less friendly to people.

Have seven different starting lineups guys miss because a cove it he's still trying to figure out of rotation and his players and one with it high on the right side. Get up top deep three. Put up and around it off. No good for David Johnson Rebound inside roads for Duke off the left side of the Florida Jalen Johnson Johnson bounce pass down inside a tap. Hey, it's knocked away and stolen by Carly Jones. Jones on the dribble down the near right side gets around a defender in the front court, now to the right block double team, looking at the Midland over on the left side of goes to Williams and works his way along the baseline, looked it up from 10 ft. It's an air ball too strong. Baker has the Duke rebound, his past, the Roaches deflected but roads able to save the possession. Well, said Louisville on top 13 21 to go here in the first half. Take her with another right wing out the roads angle Webb want to screen from Teppei dribbles to the left side gets inside the York Nothing. They're back out front to Jalen Johnson over on the right side to Baker. He'll pull up for another three that went back to the window, good fight for the long rebound of foul on the rebound. And it's going to go against Duke. Yeah, like that'll be against EJ Stewart. He picks up his first team foul number five against the Blue Devils. Now, the previous couple possessions. I talked about how you know Duke's help. I mean rules. Help was late. That time. They did a much better job with their help defense on anticipating where the passes were going, and they were getting their hands up, getting deflections but also able to contest the shot and then pick up the rebounds and lived with it for Louisville. Jones on the left wing. Beyond the arc cooks a pass to Johnson dribbles down the left side fadeaway jumper from 10. FT. Rattles it down David Johnson able to hit the bucket, his first field goal in Louisville as a 14 to 10 leagues. Little doing a nice job of finding the scenes and the defense. But that's just a tough shot. Defending catches it, but then fades backwards. Not much. The defender could do step for hope. You miss Stewart on the drive into the paint puts it up and into the foul. Stuart took it from the left wing all the way inside. Play through the contact will have a chance for a three point play. Midland picks up the foul on an excellent job. The old package make fake a pass make a passable Head of making a pass. He fakes the pass the defense moves, he puts it down on the deck and attacks. The rim.

"Job at trying to procure and make available a art. The helps promote that kind of inclusion is. Well i mean just ask yourself questions of how many pictures of jesus are up. You know. i know you're episode with john hill. And i have looked into this and and you know dui show images of christ and his atonement his crucifixion. I guess semi do. We have images of women. We have images of people of color. These are all very important to try to save these. These are the things we love. These are the things we value. These are the things. We teach for our members of our congregation. Yeah and i'm just thinking like again going back to the bishop's office you know the images that you intentionally hang up in there can be tool for you as you know. You talked about the atonement in there or store forgiveness or you know to be really intentional that or even having images that you can pull out to to teaching that sort of the classroom. That never gets really talked about. I mean there's nothing more than happens in their teaching weather. The bishopric from the spirit. Welcome so to be really intentional about that. So that's great anything else as far as the tool of art in as from the leadership standpoint how we could use our. Yeah on say. Don't even though my my purpose of my project. I've been working on the last six. Years is very historically based and trying to represents things from history that maybe haven't been represented before like we would do a great service to all of our members to just give a disclaimer. That arts is meant to represent concepts or ideas. it's not meant to be interpreted as an official doctrinal pronouncement or to be interpreted literally. This is so important otherwise we get people who think you can't show picture of an angel with wings as though somehow were you know we know. Angels don't have wings as though that central to our doctrine or something but sometimes people get caught up on that like symbol. Hold up a picture of harry. Anderson's beautiful painting of the second coming and they'll say well the problem with it. This isn't doctrinal correct. Because we know according to section one thirty three. That christ will come in a red robe. Not in what you know. What i'm saying may not do that right. Because what that does that subconsciously tells our learners that art should be always historically doctrine the accurate no matter what whereas you know sometimes art is meant to simply inspire and invoke and like. Let me give you just one example in one of my paintings in repairing the restoration. I painted god really big light. Huge thirty feet tall. Now that does not doctrinal. That's not. There's no united stephen from first presents. The twelve on god's height bright. But the reason. Why did that. I wanted to send a a concept that god is big and that god is bigger than us and so that's using the language of art using symbol and metaphor to try to teach a concept which art can do a great job. So that's another big picture. Perspective is when you are using art to teach learn how to be visually literate to use art to do the great things that art does not to pigeonhole art into always being one hundred percent historically indoctrinated accurate. If anybody's listen to this right now going well it should be. I lay down a challenge to you to try it yourself right. Most often people who want art to be perfectly. Historically accurate have never picked up a paintbrush themselves. Because the moment you do you realize that you have to make decisions to communicate thing jail free. Were one time sent. So there's there's no to paint. That says i don't know you have to paint something so when we paint. God you don't know what god looks like neither. Do i mean we don't paint him. I don't know how tall he is. I don't know what his skin color that. I notice facial features. Look like but i still need to represent him so that we can try to connect with him so let are connect. Don't try to make arch pigeonhole. At end has to be one hundred percent accurate otherwise the language of art gets silenced. And i feel like as. I've heard you teach those concepts. I feel like there's a deeper that concept goes beyond our where there may be somebody who raises their hand in a sunday. School class makes an interpretation about a gospel principle or doctrine and some people may hear like something they say well in dismiss everything. They're saying when in reality were all sort of just trying to interpret doctrines in things in a way that the help us apply in progress. Yeah that's a great application on a broader scale. I mean we're all just being translators aren't we were all just being interpreters and just like how scripture is interpreted by individuals images are simply an artist's translation. It's one person's interpretation of scene. And i think just obviously you have the skill and ability. He's been picked up a paintbrush in do these images. Others may have a skill of being a word to her in talking and speaking in a way that you know. They're illustrating their painting a picture with words that you know that's not exactly right but no i think there's a deeper meaning. We can learn from their their interpretation as we make our you know. Let's jump into some of these As i've seen you present about these pitchers as you were working on this project. There's some that just really stood out to me like wow. There's some great leadership concepts in there. I have a few that definitely get to anyone that you want to start with a really stupid. The ones you kurt. While i love the joseph smith in is his brother as a samuel williams. Brother william joseph in william the wrestling match that happened. I'm talking about an image or instance during trajectory. We naturally Nearly ever talk about. Yeah you know most people if you said. Tell me about joe's us. Brother they would tell you about hiram or they might tell you about sanyal. They don't talk about william very much which there. There may be a reason. Why but ironically william was a member of the original form of the twelve apostles. He's one of the first twelve call in eighteen thirty five february baking thirty five. Not hire samuel william and the reason why we were hiram is really steady william is very unsteady he's you know joseph collina fierce lion that then talk about how he was unsteady in williams patriarchal blessing that he gave him. But the instance. You're referring to. I think has great leadership principles in there in that william. The story is that william as an apostle was holding it debate in his home and the debate to cut to the chase. Got little out of hand. Joseph attended the debate and said that the debate shouldn't continue. William wanted the debate to continue and kind of shoots back a sharp response to joseph. And joseph probably should've walked away but his pride got the better of him. I don't know about you. Have you ever been in a leadership. Time when you just want zing somebody and you're billion. I shouldn't say this. But i say at anyway. Yup and that's exactly. Joseph did joseph was about ready to leave within. He later writes a letter and says but as i thought about it i considered the. I helped build this house that you're living in. I have a right to talk in my father's house. And i have a right to put you in place your older brother and as the president of the church so joseph does comes down hard on him it.

He said the following candles were lighted up in the houses. The birds having some their evening songs disappeared and became silent fouls retired to roost. The were crawling all around as at break of day objects could not be distinguished but at a very little distance and everything for the appearance. In Gloom of Night Williams reported that people saw a layer of scum on the surface of water that appeared to be the ashes of burnt leaves from his observations. He suggested that fires had caused favors to rise in collect in the air since the weather had been clear the air heavy in the wind quote small invariable but many people dismissed the idea that wildfires caused the darkness in the weeks after may nineteenth people proposed different theories about the origins of the event. Some thought that sunlight was being blocked by a huge mountain others believe that biblical prophecy being fulfilled later. Research suggested that distant forest fires cost the darkness researchers from the University of Missouri and US Forest Service examined tree rings and fire scars and determined that a major fire occurred in seventeen eighty in Algonquin provincial. The fires in the Algan highlands were the most likely cause of New England's dark day but fires burning in the eastern. Us could have also contributed to the darkness.
