"And this one on charity navigator has a very high rating of 91, it means that there are very efficiently they're legitimate and they're very efficiently using the money donated to them. So you can feel very comfortable planning trees and memory of your loved one and know that the money really is legitimately improperly being used for that purpose. Ron and Georgia says, are you aware that Sam's Club is now starting to implement a scan to go price and a price that is higher if you use self checkout or you check out with a cashier. It's not on all items yet. I noticed it yesterday while at Sam's it was on a box of 30 count variety of chips. It was a $4 difference in price. I asked a supervisor and he told me this was being implemented. What are your feelings on this? Well, Ryan, I have been benefiting from the scan and go savings. I have the app on my phone and when I'm in Sam's Club, I scan and go anyway, so I can avoid the checkout lines because Sam's even self checkout has long lines a lot of times. I do the scan and go on my phone. It's really an incentive program to try to get better adoption rate. And if you're a Sam's Club shopper, you know, they've got that aisle that you walk through that is supposed to show you how wonderful it is that you just breeze right through and walk past everybody in line to try to get people to think, hey, I don't have to stand in line if I use the app. People haven't been doing it. So now they're offering you a bribe to use scan and go, take the bribe, take the savings. And once enough people adopt using scan and go, they're not going to be offering those deals anymore. So take advantage of them while they're there.

more than 2700 journalists and analysts in more than 120 countries I'm Susanna Palmer This is Bloomberg This is masters in business with Barry riddles on Bloomberg radio I'm Barry holt's you're listening to masters and business on Bloomberg radio This week my extra special guest is doctor Mark Mobius He is the founding partner of Mobius capital Partners previously he spent 40 years working and traveling in emerging market and frontier markets before Mobius launched in 2018 He worked with Franklin templeton investments for more than 30 years where he was executive chairman of the templeton emerging market groups during his tenure there he helped to expand the assets under management from a $100 million to over $50 billion throughout Asia Latin America Africa and Eastern Europe He ran a series of open end closed ends and private EM funds including private equity funds he has also been on the World Bank's global corporate governance forum doctor Mark Mobius welcome to Bloomberg Thank you It's great being with you So that is quite a storied career Let's start in the early parts of it You took a very different route than most people in finance You worked at a talent agency you were a communications teacher a political consultant and am I reading this right Did you actually market Snoopy merchandise in Asia Yes I did That's right When I was in Hong Kong I had a consulting firm and one of my clients was looking for people to manufacture products so she had a company in San Francisco called productions They had the rights for all of this Snoopy merchandise all the penis submission dice And she asked me to look for manufacturers in Asia And one day I said why don't you start selling in Asia And they didn't think about that So they said why don't you do it And of course that's how I got involved in distributing these products in Asia or at least in Hong Kong and the Greater China Is that how a kid from Hempstead you grew up like 45 minutes from where I am right now is that how you got involved in international business and investing That happened in waiting for that because I got a scholarship to study in Japan after I got my message degree at BU and that really changed my life because the culture shock of being in Japan completely different culture and incredible country growing very rapidly at that time that was really what changed me and I decided to go back I got my PhD at MIT and then went right back to Asian side of working So be you masters coyote postgraduate work MIT PhD You also studied at Wisconsin Syracuse New Mexico that seems to be a very heavy focus on education I was a professional student I really didn't want to leave university And that's the reason why I did a sort of round Robin of these different universities But then finally when I got my PhD I said okay let's get real Let's find out what I should be doing in this world And how did you end up at the mega international investment trust in Taiwan Oh that was yeah international investment trust Was a before that I was working for a broker in Hong Kong It was a British broker because the cost of and they sent me to Taiwan to open an office and also sit on the board of a joint venture They had with local banks and some other British firms which was the very first investment management firm in Taiwan Call international investment trust And eventually the guy that was running it left and I took over So I became the head of that company which they launched the Taiwan ROC fund which I think the remnants of it are still listed in New York I believe Wow So over the course of your career you've traveled well over a million miles You've been to a 112 countries I have to ask what are some of your favorite places to travel and what are some of the favorite foods you've eaten You know it's really interesting when I rack my brains and see try to figure out where I like it the best I really can't come up with an answer because every place I've been I liked in some way or another But probably if you ask me right now where would you like to be and probably would be the beach Rio de Janeiro in Brazil That might be a place that would be nice to be or a beach at Cape Town South Africa I love outdoor life I love beaches and that sort of thing But frankly I lived in Japan and Korea and Taiwan Philippines I love all these places I really can't think of anyone that's particularly favorite Let's talk about food because I recall you hearing you once say that you ate scorpions on toast Is that right That does not That's right Is that sort of like a soft shell crabs What do they actually taste like Actually that was in Singapore In a restaurant that specialized in special sort of medicinally beneficial foods supposedly And this is coffee and on toast It was sort of like eating crispy shrimp but it had a little bit of a bite to it A little bit of a fee taste to it And I assume they remove the poison first or is that Is that just digested They do remove most of the poison but some of the sting was still there It was very similar to in Japan If you have had fugu with the blowfish it still has this tinging sensation on your lips which is supposed to be part of the experience I understand Singapore has become the food capital of Asia What's it like there It is true that Singapore has an incredible variety of dishes because you've got not only all the Chinese cuisines which as you know very very but then you have the Malaysian and Indonesian foods and added to that of course you have the Indians foods So it is true Singapore is quite.

"And then I was convinced by a listener to try an electric razor, and now I shave almost exclusively with an electric razor. Those used to have such a bad reputation. I love shaving with an electric razor. It's so much quicker and easier. I don't know that it's cheaper, but it's been absolutely great. Lots of people wrote in about Mark Cuban about this specific thing I enjoyed the interview, but Mark was incorrect. You do not need a membership to use Costco's pharmacy. You can also utilize the pharmacy at Sam's Club, and that was from Ruth and Wisconsin. Ruth, thank you and as you pointed out, Christa, many people pointed that out. I didn't want to interrupt the flow of the interview with Mark and start getting into the virtues of buying prescriptions. Sam's and Costco. But I will right now. The way Costco in particular prices at subscription prescriptions is unique in the business with their maximum markup model. That's why a prescription can be $7 at Costco in $250 at CVS or Walgreens just because of how they're priced. I recently, this goes back to the last thing. I'm left, I've got one of those old people prescription things where I left it at home when I was going away on a four day trip. So I was thinking of getting the prescriptions filled while I was out of town and there was no Costco or Sam's anywhere near where I was. And I looked online at what it was going to cost. And I had decided that I would go four days without my meds. Okay. Rather than not advice, you should give that advice. Because I had a med I just filled renewed at Costco that was $10 and 11 cents, and it was over $200 for a 30 day spy. I felt a 90 day for $10 and 11 cents, over $200 at both CVS and Walgreens to do a 30 day of each of the med. I was like, well, let's just say I went without your medications that could harm you for not taking them so you're not advising anyone to not advise you to do that. I'm just saying that I made a choice and the Sam's Club angle that I did not get to with Ruth because I just upset you so much. Not filling the drugs is Sam's Club if you are a plus member, there are a bunch of prescriptions that come with plus membership for free..

"Opinion informed perspectives and expert data driven commentary on breaking news It is 9 21 this Tuesday morning in the City of London time to check in with Bloomberg opinion were joined by opinion columnist Andrew felstead who's writing about inflation and how it's making room for European discounters big shops of course supermarkets as they try to win over more American shoppers Andrea Good morning So why are Aldi and little gaining customers Is this all about the price point Yes this is about the price point but there's also something a little bit more subtle about our little Now when they really did well in the UK about ten years ago after the financial crisis The price point are equivalent to the value ranges at this market But the product itself is more like a middle tier product So yes you could probably get something as cheap and a mainstream supermarket But it wouldn't be as good a product So it's that combination of price and quality and with price coming to the fore more shoppers are discovering there Price and quality but what about Costco Sam's Club There are some big discounters in the states as well How they manage these German European supermarkets to carve out market share amidst some of those huge incumbents It's about the price and it's about that limited range So you can't get everything and I'll do a little They're mostly private label And during the pandemic people really turned away from that because they didn't want to have to go to two stores I just want to do everything in a big box door But now that price is becoming more important than safety they're turning back to those discounters And Andrew what are we seeing in terms of these discounters and their ability Not just to carve out market share But to build out their presence in the United States Well Aldi is really expanding our has over 2000 stores in the U.S. and it wants to open a 150 more this year And that would make it the third biggest U.S. president by number of stores by the end of the year That pretty phenomenal part of level of growth Indeed I had no idea that they had such ambitions in the United States And in terms in terms of that demand in terms of the customer numbers that they're adding do you have more to flesh that picture out And how long can we expect that to be sustained How much is that correlation between the slow down the impact on household finances and that need to mark down in terms of your shopping bills I think it will be sustained in one of the interesting bits of data that I got from place the AI which is a football analysis that company showed that left people were cross shopping with Walmart So when they go to Aldi and lidl they tend to stick with it or they buy more so there's less cross shopping between the two So that's a real worry for the big mainstream big market As it has been for the big Europeans with markets that have been dealing with the many years okay Andrew felstead our opinion columnist check out that opinion and that piece of that column I should say on Bloomberg dot com and of course on the terminal thank you Andrea watch.

the latest to say that they would participate virtually instead Global news 24 hours a day on air and on Bloomberg quick take powered by more than 2700 journalists and analysts in more than 120 countries I'm Larry kofsky This is Bloomberg This is a special edition of Bloomberg front row I'm Eric schatzberg Today we're hearing from Don Fitzpatrick the chief investment officer at Soros fund management She's held that role for almost 5 years and revived the firm's legendary appetite for risk under founder and billionaire George Soros Now let's get her take on a somewhat controversial corner of investing Environmental social and corporate governance or ESG here once again is my conversation with Don Fitzpatrick from earlier this year For those trying to figure out how to think about ESG What is the right way to think about it Is it the right thing to do ethically is it a way to achieve progress or specific outcomes or is it just a way to hedge or mitigate externalities What's the right way So I think it's all First of all when E is she first came out it was about exclusion list That is not what ESG is about from our perspective It's about both creating the technologies that will allow a smooth transition So investing in companies like rivian and battery and EV is really important to us And then it's also about taking your existing public companies and forcing a level of transparency both in terms of greenhouse gas exposure What their plan is to transition to net zero by 2050 When it comes to diversity equity and inclusion again shining a light asking them to disclose what their company looks looks like And from our perspective the more transparency is there is the quicker the progress we will make Do they listen Do those companies listen Do they answer I know why they listen and answer to BlackRock because BlackRock has $10 trillion Did they listen and answer to you I think they do And I think we're trying to be partners We're not just saying hey check this box and we'll go away We're trying to work with them in terms of credible plans We're telling them why this is important to us And for us this really is about outcomes not about checking a box And I think they appreciate that And I think every CEO or CFO who talked to genuinely wants help on this journey I think we can be part of that You believe Soros fund management has competitive advantages Does it also have constraints Honestly the only constraint I would say but I don't think this is actually a constraint but we won't invest with companies that we think are counter to the values of the foundation for which we invest But I actually think that's a benefit not a constraint And tell me about the way you've organized the investment function What you believe the firm should be doing internally and what you think is better sourced to external managers When we think about an external manager we want it to be someone who can do something better than we can do ourselves So places that I've highlighted in the past BioTech The best BioTech managers in the world are just extraordinary at what they do They have huge teams that really have persistent advantages So we allocate externally there The other places are the really highly levered firms If I'm going to be have a lot of leverage I'd rather do it off of our balance sheet and have it be effectively non recourse leverage So that's a place that's really interesting to us And then there are just some managers who are truly uniquely uniquely talented And that's important to us One thing that I think it's important for people to know is that fees in and of themselves we don't object to if a manager is extraordinary producing valuable returns will pay what the market commands So we just allocated this year $400 million to manage our performance 30% It's a manager who is very very protective of their capacity So they very seldom raise assets He has an extraordinary amount of money alongside us and the whole time we were in discussions he was focused on protecting the interest of his existing LPs It was good alignment We're really happy to be a partner and we expect to be a long-term partner How about you personally Do you have a book you manage I do So I have a center book And I love that My whole career I've run a book and I think it's important First of all from a return perspective it's where we upsize our best ideas I think it keeps me connected to markets in a way that's really valuable And I love doing it How big is it Right now that book is reasonably large Reasonably meaning It's over a $1 billion.

'American Marxism' Is the #1 Book of 2021

"My publisher informed me today that American Marxism was being Costco another week or two It's been there really a record amount of time came out on July 13th and it's been there since As you know Costco doesn't have a very big table And I want to thank them for all the support they've given to the book but I want you to know it's not going to be there long It will remain at Barnes and noble It will remain at Walmart At target at Sam's Club at all these other places it will remain there as far as we know Now here's what I wanted to tell you I'd been chomping at the bit to tell you this Because it's since Thursday and I haven't been on the air since Wednesday If you go to Amazon.com right now the book is 50% off 50 that's the highest that's ever been its $14 for a hardback copy of American Marxism The number one book of 2021 did you know it's the number one book of 2021 Yes because you listen to this program You listen to any other program on radio any program on TV virtually any website and you wouldn't know that Conservative radical kook anything You wouldn't know it This is the number one book of 2021 fiction and nonfiction It's 50% off for the holidays Now Amazon is very fickle They could change that in 15 minutes So I want to strongly encourage you to get over there if that's what you want to do for Christmas Hanukkah just started Happy to my Jewish friends Hanukkah has started Christmas is 26 days away by my calculation So everything is appearing now 50% off for a copy of American Marxism If you wanted to give a gift it's $14 off in other words it costs $14 You can't get a fast food meal for two people for $14 So now is the time to jump in if you have not I'm quite serious

"Is not just the way it is right. It's the benefits and everything else. It's very good point. Sam's club is unveiling its holiday plans. This is water cooler. Just i just want to be clear what we're seeing. Yeah saying it's expecting customers to host more gatherings this year as a result the members only warehouse. We'll throw more store events so bigger turkeys bigger turkeys in larger sizes of poplar side dishes. This is all faucher willing. Obviously whether we did this last week that he does think we'll get together. I will be spending christmas with my family. I encourage people particularly the vaccinated people who are protected to have a normal christmas with your family. I saw him have to backtrack. After seven stuff got taken out of context. I went back and looked at the original. Steffi said i saw what he said he said yeah. We'll see whether you whether i'm gonna let you go into your relatives on christmas. The but the one thing. I will say as we'll see if it's safe but which i get. How many times have we seen twists and turns through this. Many of us thought we'd still be dealing with delta. Saw it was maybe the onion or the other one that said you now saying we're going to be able to do. We may be able to do with. This trip is what we've already done. The last two and carry more toy grants. There's also gonna do that. It's also this. This is what. I was really excited about. Also launching a wine delivery service in sixteen states to drop off six and twelve pack bottles of wine at members stores. If you're not drinking that comes in a six pack or not invited over. Am i right or am i a chuck. What does that six pack means that. They're not gonna come out for two bottles of wine if you order a big order if staffing company the case they don't mean a six pack they mean a half a case they will deliver if you're gonna order a bunch of wide but i thought. Md twenty was coming now. I was speaking to buck chuck. Yeah it's twenty proof you know there are you can percent. I'm sorry twenty percent proof. Look some big put. A little seltzer water into their one. Little ace friends that do that. Yeah asking for friends. Yeah meantime and i'm not asking for. I'm not asking for a friend on this day leading into this next door leading the next. We're going to talk about lift and tender because they are teaming up to let tinder members by arrived for a potential date. Now you can buy a ride credit in the explore section of the tinder app. You won't get details on your matches address. Oh they're worried about the security there but you can set the time location and value of the credit than the recipient will get a link via email or text the sender can choose a one way or round trip ride. And we'll get a refund if it's not used so the thing about tinder. I think the thing about tinder is that you're in this case you're sending them the credit they don't even know they'll know it but they don't know you like them do they. I mean how does this work at that point. They find out for a date. I'll make sure i give you a ride. Maybe just here maybe round trip but man. This is right. What happens if you don't get around. You can get a ride one way or it really should be should be round trip from the beginning. Yeah yeah i think they should do. The one way feels cheap yep suggestive. How many other words could i come up with. You know you might go from tinder and lift to netflix and chill. Just trying to figure out how much how much a partnership this new world. This is a brave new world. Save me a lot of time and my liver would be in better shape. And even yeah. I believe you're leaving shorting the bar business. Yeah what the you know. I told you man. This is this is something that means. We are still on track for that meeting the comes. What is it the twenty fifth or twenty six the tober when the fda considers it. That's right so the advisory committee is meeting october. Twenty six They'll make a decision on the application. That point whether or not they recommend authorization of the vaccine for five to eleven. Cdc would convene shortly after that and make a recommendation about use of the vaccine. So we're talking the first week of november. Probably that if they do approve it kids would be able to get the shots. Yeah i think it'd be available fairly soon after authorization and and a positive. Cdc recommendation You know the company has been working to get the vaccine into the supply chain in the kind of package and it's going to be required for delivery to To kids ages five to eleven so there shouldn't be any delay availability. How likely are the fda and the cdc along and approve this. And i ask only because you know with the booster shots. We thought it was going to be an easier situation than it was not everyone on. Those advisory panels agreed with it. Is there a chance that this would be something. That only went to some portions of those kids. The older kids is there a that. They would say no outright that they want more information. Look hard for me to speculate What f the cdc might do. I don't see anything in the application or haven't heard anything in the commentary around the data from the public health committee. That would suggest that. There's any controversy around this. I think we're you know people are more uncomfortable is whether or not this is gonna be mandated. I don't see any kind of mandated use of this vaccine for a long time I don't see. Cdc wreck making a recommendation that this gets incorporated into the childhood mutation schedule or that this be mandated for children for years and years from now. I think the cdc is gonna want to wait to see what the post pandemic phase looks like. They'll probably look at adolescence very differently than they look at kids age five to eleven that want multiple vaccines on the market and approved by fda fully approve. So that's where. I see some chattering controversy in the public health community or among consumers but nothing related to the application itself..

"I was. And with Sam's Club. Yes, I was because when there used to be a Sam's club in South Tampa Not far from my home. I was a member, but then they closed the plumbing. What the They closed the Sam's Club near my house. Typically, if the store is not doing well, that's why they closed the place. I can't imagine the place was but someone told me that story did very well. They called it. I have no idea. So I am I'm currently a Costco member. And like I said, I'm not an expert, but I do believe that my observations have been Not a lot of free samples during the week. But on Saturday and Sunday, that's when the sample Little carts throughout And they're giving you little samples of some beef log on a toothpick. Giving you some little many cup with a quarter ounce of some cranberry juice, sir. Whatever in order to get, like, half a swig, you gotta get like 19 Sample cups. To try that the juice they're having a I've always joked, Hey, you want to feed the family for free? You want to feed the family a very low cost. Just do lunch with Costco or Samba Club. Just going on a Saturday about 11 a.m. and just motor through to get all the free crap that he can't Anyway. Listen, I I thought this was a A nice, positive, light hearted way to start the snitch show before I dive into all the really awful death and destruction that Hey, good news, Fantastic news, the free samples and coming back to Costco so phased in beginning today. And it'll happen during the course of the month. And I don't have a list of where they're phasing it in. But it should all be done. All the normal free sampling of Costco should be back in by the end of June before July. Now they're gonna have some increase safety protocols. They're gonna have samples prepared in smaller batches and behind plexiglass. So wait a minute. The ladies and sometimes the guys in the In the hair nets and the gloves. And the smocks. So now they're gonna they're gonna have like rolling plexiglass shields on their sample tables and cards. Apparently, that's gonna be the case. Wait a sec cost I said approximate. Okay. Oh, okay. Costco is 560 locations. I think I confuse the number. Costco's, uh, 560 locations in the U. S. That's a lot. I didn't know they had 560. So Costco is 560 locations in the U. S. And, uh, all the free sample and should be back in all locations by the end of June before July, approximately 170 That's where I got the 1 70 from approximately 170 Costco branches will have the taste things back this week. There we go. All right, So that's that's the deal. That's why I confused. 170 Constable Locations will have samples back by this weekend and then allowed 560 locations should have it back by The end of the month. So there you go. Your mileage may vary Your Costco might very so just pay attention. And I get ready for the free samples and the little bitty Dixie Cup of whatever those little things are. With three little pretzel nubs or whatever. They whatever they're handing out that particular day. All right Now, let me get to the serious crap here, folks and wow, Mm. Can I Can I just could we just continue with a A quiet time. Could we Maybe should do. Schmidt show meditation. What do you think? All right. I just gotta dive into this boy. Uh, President Trump Former president of United States. According to Maggie Haberman. At The New York Times. Trump is telling people that he expects to be reinstated by August. As president of the United States. I can't make this crap up. Maggie Haberman. Sure Some people are saying grumble, Grumble New York Times you don't Maggie Haberman and Trump go back decades. They go back. I thought it was close to 30 years. 2030 years, Maggie Haberman has reported on Trump in New York for a very, very long time. And they've had a really good relationship up until the president became the president. Up until Trump won his term. In 2016, and then Lasted until 12 noon. Of this year on January 20th. Prior to becoming president. Trump had a pretty good relationship with Maggie Haberman, the writer at The New York Times. And she is reporting the Trump is allegedly telling people that he expects to be reinstated as president of the United States by August. Uh, Maggie Haberman again, Maggie Haberman used to be so close to Trump used to be known as the Trump Whisperer. True story Trump used to confide in Maggie Haberman. Trump had a really good relationship. They were close. Trump Obviously an endless source for decades of news and information and gossip and just media awareness and trump used to give Maggie Haberman Ah, whole lot of scoop it. Used to just kind of, you know. You were a little bits and pieces and nuggets and she would break stories over the years. And despite the falling out that they've had in recent years hey, Berman's reporting has rarely been wrong. So this is what's important, realize. Is that Trump and Maggie Haberman of The New York Times They've had a falling out, no doubt about it since he became president. Actually, I believe, beginning on the campaign for him. And her reporting, though Has been very accurate over the years Now. Haberman shared the news in a quote. Uh, of a CNN segments. So Haberman shared this particular news. This was in a tweet. It's a quote of a CNN segment featuring a bunch of Cuban on followers. That are hoping for a Burma. Style me and Mar style coup here in the United States that would ostensibly replaced by then with Trump following a military coup now, Maggie Haberman wrote. Trump has been telling a number of people he's in contact. With these individuals and that he expects that he's going to be reinstated by August. You got this? Allegedly Trump is telling people that he's In contact with a number of people. But he expects to be reinstated as president of the United States by August. Now..

Justice Department Sues Walmart for Alleged Role in Opioid Crisis

"Retail giant walmart is under fire for its alleged role in fueling the nation's opioid crisis. The justice department has sued. The company alleging created a system that turned. It's five thousand in store. Pharmacies into leading suppliers of highly addictive painkillers. The suit comes after walmart. Preemptively sued the federal government in october to fight. The expected allegations joining me now to talk more about this is washington business reporter. Tim pukekohe hi. Tim thanks for being here. Hi thank you so tell us what specifically is alleged in this lawsuit against walmart. The us government is listing walmart among relatively long list of companies. Now that have some role in the opioid crisis. What the justice department is saying. Is that through the system. That walmart created its pharmacies. It created an environment where doctors and drug abusers could prey on its pharmacies and have invalid. Opioid prescriptions by the thousands filled at walmart pharmacies. Now there were also some allegations within that lawsuit from walmart pharmacists that the company ignored their warnings. And the suit also alleges that. It was difficult for them to reject prescriptions. They found problematic. Can you talk a little bit about how that system worked. The government's lawsuit portrays a company in which pharmacists were under an extreme amount of stress confronted by demands from their own managers to work faster and from a deadly crisis. That was unfolding you right in front of them walmart. Of course it's famous for low prices and book sales and just as a matter of course wanted it's pharmacies to get out. Low cost drugs at a relatively fast clip. Fill the prescription fast. And according to the allegations of the lawsuit the walmart managers believed it would keep customers in the store and shopping and so that was a matter of course for these pharmacists. When you add opioids into the mix then it becomes a lot more dangerous. A lot of these doctors could see. Suspicious prescriptions the same doctors coming back over and over again over prescribing patients. They sought help from compliance managers at the company to do things. Like just you an on. Moss rejection of prescriptions from doctors. Like this and they were told time and again. No you cannot do blanket rejections. You have to do them. Only on a case by case basis and because of their other pressures to get these prescriptions out to get prescriptions. Broadly out very quickly in the end pharmacists felt like they didn't have the time to scrutinize. Each of these prescriptions and ultimately had to end up for filling a lot of prescriptions. That they believe were invalid to begin with now. Walmart had been expecting this lawsuit. The company actually preemptively sued the justice department. Can you tell us more about that suit. And what walmart is saying. Now there's been a broad and at times very aggressive conflict between the federal government and other governments around the country with different major corporations that are alleged to play a role in fueling this crisis. Walmart has taken an aggressive stance in trying to fight allegations before they came. The company filed a lawsuit in october. That said department of justice. Investigators had been looking into the company and had been informing the company of all these pending allegations and there are a lawsuit was a preemptive strike against that. They've said that in their opinion the department of justice and also the. Da had basically been trying to scapegoat walmart for the government's own regulatory failings and they'd said that for example many of the doctors that the department of justice said walmart should have been keeping an eye on are still registered and active with da. And so in walmart's opinion if the government couldn't stop these doctors for making prescriptions. He'll it's not really fair for it to expect walmart to stop at according to walmart's claims and its own lawsuit followed the law to the best of their ability and walmart today. Reiterated many of those same points and added that the lawsuit quote is riddled with factual inaccuracies and cherry-picked documents taken out of context tim. We've seen several drugmakers charged for their role in the opioid crisis as well as some settlements is walmart's lawsuit indicative of a widening of the investigation into the opioid crisis. And who else might bear responsibility. I hate to speculate on other companies that are going to be charged but what i think. It is emblematic for sure. Is that governments. Broadly but especially the federal government are being as aggressive as they can be about finding anyone with culpability in this crisis. President trump back in two thousand eighteen directed. Then attorney general jeff sessions to go out and file a major lawsuit. He was talking then. Spur more specifically about the drug makers. But yes what we've seen since then is a whole litany of lawsuits against not just the drug makers but distributors and now retailers as. Well one other facet to note in this case is that for a time. Walmart was duchess a retailer and the pharmacy for many for many customers but it was also a distributor walmart is is the world's largest retailer in has a huge network five thousand in store pharmacies at all not just at walmart's but at sam's club too and its reach throughout american society goes incredibly far. So what you see. The government here is finding another major players one of the biggest targets that could possibly come across and going after it as aggressively as it has gone against the drugmakers to that's wall street journal washington business reporter. Tim cuco tim. Thanks so much for joining us today so much ravioli

Cyber Monday deals abound

"The clark deals crew has been working literally around the clock for a much longer period than historically. The clark deals team would work with most of the effort prior years being black friday week through cyber monday but this year not like prior years. The sales spread out the entire month of november bleeding into all the way into this. Friday is cyber monday for most retailers has become cyber week and it can be overwhelming. It's obviously overwhelming for our deals. Team can be overwhelming for you as a consumer with every E mail message. You get or text you might get from retailer you've done business with in the past or do currently screaming. How great their deals are so it really requires action not reaction on your part to plan out number one that you don't overspend and number two that you are getting real deals not non deals and so i know that if you are among the more than one third people somewhere roughly a little more than a third whom look at shopping during the month of december for christmas as more chore than joy. This is even harder for you to think through this way. But i'm more concerned about people who get really excited by deal deal and spend money. That is really more than your wallet is designed for and so that's why back to basics. I want you to think about coming up with a budget. Not too late even if you've already been clicking and buying black friday week and now in cyber week you're like oh look at this. Do you look at that one. Go ahead and assess what you've already spent and how that fits into what you really can't afford to spend through this. Christmas selling cycle second win. They're things you're interested in. Just take the time to write down the offers for example like Historically have been the top draws in the friday and now cyber week deals and they get really really confusing so no this the real deals come with. Tv's and various forms of electroncs that our current technology not state of the art. The very best doorbuster kind of deals are those that are off brands or More minor brands an example Sam's club has a hot item today where they're selling a seventy five inch. Tv four k whole bit from philips philips is not a premiere brand in the united states anymore and it's five hundred and ninety nine dollars. There was a cheaper roku. Tv seventy five inch with best. Buy for four nine thousand nine that when sold out five nine thousand nine for seventy five inch. tv really really great. But it's Yes you'd call that a second tier brand and then when you look at the first tier brands samsung. Lg sony the tv's. That are the best deals for black friday. Cyber monday in this week of cyber week our. Tv's that may be Last season's models or models that they had oversupply of or they made specifically as value additions for retailers. To sell this week and there are great. Great great deals especially when you step down to the second tier or third tier brands. Listen this when if you want a jain normal. Tv best buy has an eighty five inch imagine eighty five inch tv. A high sense. Four k nine hundred ninety nine dollars. I mean that's ridiculous and they have an l g eighty six inch for fourteen forty nine so there are a variety of really really great deals on. Tv's and for people looking at more reasonable sizes like looking from thirty two inch. Tv's that right now are seventy nine dollars and up Sixty five inch. Tv's cheap is two hundred fifty dollars and there are great. Great deals available and avoid with electronic spying state-of-the-art because today's state of the art is much more money than current technology and we'll be current six months from now or whatever at a fraction of the price that state of the art is right now

Amazon & Walmart changing checkout experience

"Amazon. Has Developed a shopping cart. Is Most. People aren't aware Amazon very quietly. Is Opening, Amazon branded supermarkets. And they're doing just a few around the country is they've really failed with whole foods they're trying to come up with an Amazon branded supermarket and the shopping carts. Automatically. Know, what you have in your cart. And when you're done shopping. You just walk right out of the Amazon Grocery. So you don't even stop at a cashier. And the one thing you have to be as you have to be registered with Amazon. With the APP on your phone. And then it knows who you are when you come in knows how you're going to pay. And then the heart I know this is freaky and weird but the cart. Automatically Is. To Register each item. That has gone in there. It's called the the Dash Cart. And when you're done. You're done just go straight to your vehicle. Walmart. Amazon's rival. Is rumored to be coming out with an? Addition, to. Their APP. Where registered shoppers and it's not clear what category that's going to be will be able to. Check out of the store on their own right on their phone. It's not as easy. As what Amazon's offering very similar if you are a Sam's club shopper and have used their self-checkout. On your phone and it's great. Because allows people who know how much money they can spend to not get to the register and say, Oh, I don't have enough money for that. Were you take that off you take that off, take that off you. As you go along, you're able to ring things up. You know what they're going to cost what your total bill is and the rest, and this puts cashier jobs at risk obviously. But, the. Retailer. Is Looking to create a more efficient environment, and then the other aspect that's been rumored is that they're trying to deal with people's fears of human contact right now with corona and that's why. They're going to offer people the ability to ring up their own purchases completely different than self-checkout. This is just reading the Barcodes as you go on your phone with a running total. And then you end up checking yourself out. It creates a bar code that the greeter at the door scans with a little electronic gun. And they're able to verify the. You're a okay and you leave the store not ever having gone to a register line four one.
