Our Pet of the Week segment sponsored by the Rocky Gorge Animal Hospital Resort and Spa. Joining us live once again, Sam Miller from the Humane Rescue Alliance. Sam, I understand you've got Remy up for adoption this week with his bright ears. Tell us about Remy. Yes, I'm so excited to introduce you to Remy who is a sweet young pup that is just a true love bug. He's a brown pit bull terrier mixed with an adorably goofy smile. He's really energetic and an affectionate guy who can't wait to get snuggles, belly rubs and kisses from his new family. That sounds like a winner. How old is Remy and what's his size? Remy is young. We think he's about three years old and he's a good size. He's about 50 pounds. Ah, he looks smaller than that in the picture, but yeah, that's a good size. What type of home would work best for Remy? Well, he's always curious and excited to explore, so we think he would do well with an active family that can help continue to work on his basic manners and give him all the love that he deserves. Do we know anything more about his background? How he got to the shelter? He was found as a stray in Southeast DC, but since coming to the shelter, we've learned a lot about him, just that he's so affectionate and goofy. He loves to go on long, sniffy walks, and he's just an all -around great dog. All right, we've got to work on finding Remy, a forever home. Tell us how folks can adopt Remy and perhaps see him as well. Absolutely. Well, to learn more about how to adopt Remy and all the other available animals, you can visit wtop .org. And we'll have a photo posted as well at wtop .com. Search pet of the week. Sam, thank you so much. Sam Miller from the Humane Rescue Alliance. Dad, word on the street is that you're retiring. Alana, you know me pretty well. Do you think I'm retiring? Not a chance. I am cutting back, but I am not leaving Rocky Gorge. Nothing is more fulfilling to me than taking care of people's pets and hearing about their lives and families. When I took over from Dr. Morley, people were worried, but he knew, just like I know with Dr. Pasachoff, Dr. Appelbaum, Rainer, and the other partners, that change is the only constant in life, and they will make Rocky Gorge even better than it was before. I'm glad, and although Mom loves you, I'm not sure she's ready for you to be home all the time. I can't say I blame her. From everyone at Rocky Gorge, thank you for trusting your pet's love for the past 72 years, and we wish you a healthy, happy, and safe New Year. And don't forget, we're here you and your pets 24 -7, 365 days a year, and we'll never forget, nothing warms the heart like a cold nose. You recognize our jingle, it is cabinet discatters, and now celebrating our 40th anniversary. All right, Jeff, thank you ten 41, and time for WTO's pet of the week. Our pet of the week segment is sponsored by the rocky gorge, animal hospital resort and spa. Joining us live now, Sam Miller, with the humane rescue alliance. Sam, our pet of the week is Emmy this week. Tell us about Emmy. Emmy is a four year old pit bull terrier mix who is just as sweet as they come. She has a special smile that's actually a cleft palate, which comes with zero medical issues just a permanent, adorable, cheesy grin. A forever smile, huh? About how big is Emmy? She's about 50 pounds. She's kind of a low rider. She's super cute. I had the opportunity to hang out with her recently, and she is just a true people dog. She's just calm, polite, easy to handle. And she actually lives with children right now and her foster home, so she's great with kids too. Excellent. How about with other pets? She doesn't live with other dogs in her foster home, but when she greets other dogs, she's, you know, she creates them and then she's just ready to continue walking. So I think she could do well with another dog in the home. Excellent. All right, how can folks see ME and perhaps bring her home? Well, for more info or to set up a meet and greet with Emmy, you can visit humane rescue alliance dot org. Now Sam, you told us last week you had a large number of dogs at the shelter and you were hoping folks would come in and begin some adoptions. How are things going this week? We definitely saw some increase in adoptions, which has been wonderful, but we still are at capacity with dogs. So we're really hoping to get as many more dogs out as we can. Excellent, excellent. All right, hopefully folks will come out and maybe take Emmy home as well. You can see photos of this of this week's WTO pet of the week. It's Emmy. We've got it at WTO dot com, search, pet of the week. Sam Miller, with the humane rescue alliance. Now that rocky gorge animal hospital is offering both urgent care walk in appointments as well as ER care, it's important to understand the different medical issues that may bring you and your pet in and what category they fall under. For example, patients that are experiencing an acute traumatic injury such as a hit by car or a great fall, those will be directed to our ER service to be triaged by a skilled technician. Respiratory distress, choking, allergic reactions, or seizures, are also considered emergencies. Conditions such as limping, ear, or skin infections, are considered less emergent and will be recommended for urgent care as a walk in. Please expect that there may be a wait time. Every ER patient will be triaged to determine their stability, and thus place in line to be seen. Urgent care walk ins are seen on

"We just get to see some really, really good baseball and even within the context of regularly seeing really good baseball regularly seeing really good baseball from the two players involved in that interaction, if not always their team. It was a very special thing, I think. I think we got to see something really profoundly cool. And I'm glad that we all got to experience that together. If I were ever just going to pack it in and say, well, our work here is done. This is what we wanted to happen in baseball. This is why we've been doing this for decades and centuries. This is what I was hoping to see. I've now seen everything that I could possibly hope to see. And perhaps it's time to step away. It's just like the George could stand in the jerk store episode where he's just like, that's it for me. When he wants to leave on a high note, it's like how could that possibly be topped? I don't know. Will I just be chasing that high for the rest of my baseball following life? Is there any way that that could be matched or forget about this season? It's a strange sensation because MLB regular season has not begun. And yet I feel like there's almost no chance that that will not be the most indelible baseball memory from this year. Yeah. I mean, what could possibly be? I try to imagine any sort of scenario. There's almost no scenario where Shohei Ohtani faces Mike Trout with two outs and championship on the line and the one run game can't imagine that happening hard to imagine anything else being better than that. So it's almost like, well, should we just stop the team preview series? Should we just all reconvene next year and we'll just start fresh and we'll just savor the memory of that pitch and that played parents for the rest of the year like that can't possibly be topped. I guess that one of the most incredible things about baseball as we were recently reminded by Sam Miller is that you always have the potential to see something you haven't seen before. And you know, I don't imagine that we will get many moments that could top that, but you know the potential exists, the possibility is there. It is not without precedent for us to see really, really cool stuff, but there's no way it's not in the top ten, right? And maybe we'll be wrong and wouldn't that be delightful, think about the season we would be having if we look back and we're like, we thought. We thought we had it figured in March, but actually it turns out that there was there was great joy awaiting us. Could be true. Who knows? Yeah. I've talked kind of tongue in cheek, but not really about just worrying that Shohei Ohtani has spoiled all future baseball players for me because it could be as exciting. And so now I'm worried that this Shohei Ohtani moment has spoiled future Shohei Ohtani moments for me. I hope that there will be many more. I guess that we don't always have to aspire to top previous great moments. We could just have other great moments whether or not they are as great or greater they could still be great and they don't necessarily need to pale in comparison, but that pitch were so perfect. Oh man. The situation was so perfect. I was almost apprehensive about podcasting about it because our podcasting could not possibly be as perfect as the situation calls for. I think I messaged you mid plate appearance. Yes. And just said, I can't believe this is happening. Yeah. Which is something that I've gotten texts from various other people while it was happening just after it happened even the day after just reflecting like I can't believe that happened. Did that actually happen? It's like having to check with other people to see if their recollections match yours. That game actually end that way. Yeah. It did.

Sam Miller with the humane rescue alliance. Good morning, Sam, you've got Maddie up for adoption this morning. Tell us about him. Good morning. Maddie is a one year old rottweiler shepherd mix with the biggest smile. He has a Need for Speed and a volunteer coined what he likes to do called super zoomies, and it's so hilarious to watch. But despite his playful nature, he's also a total snuggler who enjoys cuddling up for scratches and backgrounds. Very nice. What would be the ideal home for Maddie? He would do best in a home where you can continue to explore, play, and also snuggle with his people. He's ready to be adopted by an attentive family who will treat him like a major part of their pack. Now does he need to be the only dog in the home? He's actually great with other dogs and he's always down to run and play with any dog who wants to join in on the fun. Excellent, excellent. What is I'm sorry if I missed it, how old is Maddie approximately and what's his size? He is one years old and he's a big boy. He's about 60 pounds. He is a rottweiler shepherd mix, so I should give you some sort of indication. Yes, indeed. So how can folks meet Maddie and possibly add him to their family? Well, if you're looking to meet Maddie, you can learn more about him at humane rescue alliance dot org. Excellent. Thank you, Sam. We appreciate it. "Plays that are very confusing in ballpark when you don't have the benefit of commentary. Like even box don't make sense when you're in the ballpark and it's known to explain it to you. I'm here to tell you. I've never seen a hidden ball trick in person. I'd like to see that. And I'd like to see it in person and be like, what happened? What happened? Where did it go? You want to get tricked? I do want it in this particular way. Yeah, not generally, but you know, I'm making I'm making an exception here. So those are some that came to mind for me. All right. I have a wide range they range from the very mundane, such as Meg you and I both get migraines. Yeah. And mine come in one second, they take one second to happen, and I can't see. At all. And I always, when I'm watching baseball, I'm always thinking, how come no one ever gets pulled with a migraine? It doesn't make sense to me. Everybody I tell that I, anytime I tell someone I have migraines, they go, yeah, me too. As far as I can tell, everybody gets migraines. Never see a ball player in the middle of an inning. Raise his hand and say, I can't see anymore. Come pull me from the game. I would like to see that for personal reasons. I also thought about the rapture, but in the middle, I would go in the middle, which is a very specific one. Which is a very specific one. So imagine, say, runners on second and third, bottom of the 9th, home team trailing by one, two outs. Okay? Go ahead, run on second, two outs. Fly ball into shallow, left field, left Fielder comes in, appears to trap it, runs both score, home team charges out of the dugout, walk off celebration, chase down the batter, spray them with water bottles and gum buckets, visiting team manager challenges the call. Says he thinks it's a catch. So walk off celebration has happened. I'm pretty sure that this has happened, a walk off celebration has been paused for a replay. And I'm pretty sure that walk off celebrations have hinged on a repay. But in this specific scenario, both teams will win, depending on. Like this is not we either go home or if what I'm saying makes sense to you. This is a, there is no tie possible. There is no well, now there's one out and we keep going, possible. This is either team will win based on this replay. There is no reason for the defense to stand out on the field anymore while they wait for this. So I presume they will all jog in and wait for the replay to be concluded. And if the call is overturned, I believe they would then do a walk off celebration. I think they would do it right there on the field, chase down the guy who caught it, spray him with water, dump the gum bucket on him. I think we could have a double walk off celebration. Either way, I would like to see a two full outcome to like I would like to see a 100% win probability swing replay situation. Where it's all or nothing. I thought that whole scenario was leading up to the rapture for a while there. I was not waiting for the rapture to come. I see. Yeah, that'd be exciting. I'd like to see it. I'd like to, I think those two minutes and 40 seconds would be tense. All right, so that's it. That's my, that's my cliche. Okay. That was fun. Well, we're happy to have you back. Writing for public consumption and joining us today and obviously welcome back whenever and I look forward to reading everything that you're going to write. So pebble hunting pebble hunting that substack dot com and I hope that you have some sort of rip van winkle moments coming back to baseball after paying less intense attention for a little while. Like you had with the for you tab on Twitter or stat heads being the new name for play index. Remember a few years ago when we had the listener. Right, and then was surprised when he came back and wanted to know how to break his baseball fast and figure out where everyone was now. Kind of like got that, then there was a lockout and we all experienced that sort of, but no one went anywhere. Anyway, I know that's not exactly what happened to you here and I'm sure you're aware that there's a pitch clock now. But if any of those incidents strike you where you go, I must have missed something here because I don't know how we got to this point. I don't think it's going to happen. I took 2021 off from the American League, but 2022 is pretty normal for me. All right. Well, good luck with the substack. Thanks. And Sam's on Twitter. He's tweeting now. For now, at least at Sam Miller BB tweeting about baseball and also Shrek. All right, so here's the thing, Sam Miller, not the only beloved baseball institution that has returned to us this week. "It never really leaves. Yeah, I guess the Castellanos I have not looked at projection. But I guess he's probably projected to be not much better than an average player hitter I would imagine. So I think I also got his I think I got his projected warp exactly right too. I think it was 1.7, I think. Okay. So you remember roughly what an average player is and also I guess that Nick Castellanos is one more or less. Yeah, yeah, exactly. That's exactly right. And I remembered to do a little adjustment for the lowered offensive environment and stuff like that. Yeah. I would say. I will say that probably the first month or so is going to be a lot of, I don't know. There might not be a lot of proper nouns if you know what I mean. It might be some sort of generalities about the nature of sport. And try not to notice that too much. And then we'll get into graphs later. Yeah. It's almost like the pressure's off because they're too many players now for anyone to know all of them. Because of the 26 man roster. Yeah. I knew about that, by the way. You had it holstered. That's right. Yeah. And also just the way that roster shuffle and players get optioned. I mean, maybe that's a little less egregious now than it was. But just because of the way pitchers are used now, they're just hundreds more players per season than there used to be. And many more players debuting. So no one knows all of them. Maybe Eric long and Hagan maybe knows all of them, and maybe like dynasty league people know all of them, but I don't know all of them. Most people don't know of them. So it's a defensible now, I think, maybe in a way that it wasn't in the past when there were fewer teams or fewer players, and there was no excuse for not knowing all the players. Now it's like, no one knows all of them. So you just have your cutoff somewhere for who clears the bar of notable enough. Yeah. I just don't want to clarify, because Jake was the cousin, Jake. It's like cousin. I don't just say like, oh, your name's Jake. I'm gonna name a random baseball player with your name. It's like a cousin Jake Jake cousins. Yes. We got the joke even though you were with, I guess. So now I imagine everyone is signing up for your substack, now that they know that you remember that kind of cousins and probably, I guess we should say you have a sub stack. So probably most people listening to this are aware of that by now and probably Sam Miller has a substack is sort of a, you had me at hello situation for a lot of people listening, but for anyone who actually does need to be persuaded to part with their money, I know you're just raring to go with a hard sell here. You've got to just a great sales pitch rehearsed because you're just such a relentless self promoter. So you probably have the pattern down. You're asking me to do this. Are you preparing? Yeah, go ahead. Well, I mentioned when I was on here a year ago that I thought I might write a book. And you know, I started writing a lot of stuff that was like a book. And you know, it can be a real long process of turning a thing into a book, and it can be frustrating, and you deal with a lot of stuff like covers and things. And I just, you know, I got to a point last fall where I was just incredibly impatient to go. I didn't want to, I didn't want to take that time. I didn't want to wait that long. I didn't want to have to sell it in that way. And so I thought, let's go. And so that's what I decided to do is just I wanted to get going. And so I'm going to write about everything. I'm going to write about all sorts of stuff. I'm going to write more than 18 posts, but something like 18 of them over the next year or so are going to be from that project. That project being unofficially not actually titled, but unofficially titled the meaning of baseball in 18 ish fun facts. And so the first one just went up and it was a long exhaustively researched meditation on the 1916 giants who won 26 games in a row, which is a record. And during the entire 26 game winning streak, never got out of fourth place. And so they're all kind of like that. They're like my favorite fun facts or things that have always been favorite parts of baseball history or baseball present to me and I'm looking ever deeper into them and deconstructing what they mean and telling them as stories. So that's kind of the spine of it. The next post that I write is not going to be that. The next post that I write involves the phrase drunk umpire. And so there's kind of that stuff too. Although there might have been drunk umpires during the 1916, which is probably more like giant season. Yeah, they probably were a lot of them. So there's going to be like some whimsy and some stuff and it's just a hodgepodge. You know, I have a hard time. I've never really been able to write anything except whatever I was most excited to write in the moment. And that means that there's going to be stuff that is all over the board. That's what it is. It's like all over the board. Whatever I get excited about is I'm going to write about it. So sub stack. Yeah. Famously, no editors. That's so stack. How are you? And I know you're sending everything to RJ. So I don't mean to say that it's not getting screened. He just slowly scrolls though. It's not as helpful as you'd think. But what's that been like writing stuff and then being like, I guess I can hit publish on this. Well. Look. Ben and I were each other's editors for like 5 years, which basically just meant that we posted our own stuff. I don't know. I am more nervous when it hasn't been edited. Yeah. That is true. But not that much more nervous and to be honest, it's really nice to when you have an editor who is going to be like a wall between you and publishing, you end up writing for the editor instead of writing for yourself or for the audience, you just think what's going to get me out of work today. What's going to get me off the clock this afternoon. And so then that sometimes causes you to be a little bit safer than you might otherwise be. And so I don't know. It has, I don't think it's likely to change what I do, all that much. I guess actually even before that before baseball perspectives, I was at the Orange County register. And 90 some percent of what I wrote, I just posted myself. As well. So probably not that big a difference. I mean, if you're looking for some work to do on the side. I know that you have a lot of free time. And what you like to use that free time on is editing baseball writing. Yeah, because it's really different than what I do with my non free time with my purchased time. What's that? What is the opposite? What is the right opposite of that expression? Yeah, that's good. Well, you know, Sam, if you ever want another pair of eyes on something, I am happy to I am happy to look at it. I don't mean to suggest, by the way, that you're going to put slop out there or anything. I just am curious because I'm increasingly terrified of writing at all, you know? So the idea of writing without anyone looking at it is maybe just a convenient manifestation of an existing chair. Yeah. It's also, I would imagine it feels like a safe space probably because you're writing for a curated audience of people who have opted into the same Miller experience, right? I mean, it's like when we wrote for baseball prospectus, generally, people had to pay to read that the comments were pretty smart, usually.

"In the ringer joined by Meg rally a fan graft solo Meg. Hello. And I am also joined as is Meg by our old co host Sam Miller, who has returned to baseball rating and for today to the podcast. So Sam, welcome back to baseball writing in the podcast and the Internet at large. Yeah, well, back to baseball publishing. Then I've been writing for a little bit. And now I am publishing it. But I've been doing some work and I've been kind of enjoying the, I don't know, I've been enjoying it a lot, so yeah, I'm back. That sounds bad. Not like how that sounds. A lot of people said that about you, but I guess when people say back, it sounds better than when Sam says, Sam's back. Anyway. I've enjoyed some of the work. I've got to see some of the work that you did. Yeah, that's right. The rule is the rule is that if one of us writes something in the shape of a book, the other one will start reading it and I think Ben is maybe the only person that has read, like a substantial RJ, everything I write, I send to RJ, like right away, like just right away every sentence. So he and you have read fair amounts of it. And you said, I don't know, should I block quote what you said about it? I can't remember if you, I don't know. I think I said you told me I should finish it. I remember that. You definitely said I should finish it. Yeah, I did. So I was in favor of you publishing it. So I'm glad that you are. And I'm flattered that you sent some of it to me and I'm excited for everyone who gets to see what I saw and I'm excited for myself getting to see what I didn't see. And I also sent RJ stuff sometimes and RJ sends me stuff. He sends me, we're talking about Archie Anderson of CBS sports, by the way, if that wasn't clear to anyone, just some stranger named RJ, we both happen to know. But he will send me links to basically everything that he publishes, and he will say, don't read it. Scroll slowly. Just click and slowly scroll. Scroll slowly. Just to improve his traffic stats. And sometimes he'll tell me that he's got good traffic stats that I wonder if that's because he just says many, many friends that he personally sends out all his links to. Hopefully we're that blowing up his spider. I do feel like that might not be for everyone to know. I'll check with the bullshit. Anyway. Yes, there's a weird cut in here. Well, I guess we'll cut this part out too. Yeah, that one will know. It'll just be layers of snow and knowing anything. Anyway, we last had you on 14 months ago. I think it seems like too long for me to say, have you been? Because it'd probably be a really long answer, but I guess I will say, how are you? Instead, I guess you just conveyed some of how you are sounds pretty good. Yeah, I'm good lately. Good. And the last time we talked to you on here, you had been away from writing about baseball, writing about it at all, right? I think not just not publishing, but not writing, maybe, for a little more than a year at that point, probably. And at that time, you had not yet been bitten by the bug. Again, it seemed like you had enjoyed the break and you just enjoyed being a fan again, and you got to enjoy all time giant season. So I guess I could say what got you back into it, or maybe just what's your relationship to baseball like these days? You know, I worried because when we were editing baseball perspectives, you edit like ten articles a day about like middle relievers and fantasy value and low a prospects. And so you have an awareness of the whole game that is just kind of outrageous and really helpful in informing everything you write. And even at ESPN, I would be so kind of tunnel vision that I felt like my grip on the whole game would sometimes be loosening a little bit and so I last year was not the 2021 giants. It was a sort of a different type of season. So 2022 giants, yeah. Yeah, exactly. And so I would say that I followed it somewhat, probably I would say like if it was like the Spotify rap, I would be like the 99th percentile baseball follower, but if it were the effectively wild audience, maybe I would have been like median, maybe I'm not really sure. So I kind of worried about whether I would be able to flex those muscles again. And so then today I was looking at I was reading my baseball perspective annual and I got to Nick Castellanos and I thought, I'm not even going to look. I'm going to just write down, I sort of like vaguely knew that he had a bad year last year. And I know who Nick Castellanos is. And so I thought, I'm going to predict his pagoda. And so I wrote down two. Wait, where is it? Two 66, three 27, four 46. That was my predicted projection for him. And I was off by one point on the batting average. And 6 points on the on base and three points on this slugging. And it just reminded me that it's really like one repetitive story. And once you really get locked into it, I got locked in around like 2008, 2009, like really, really locked in. And, you know, somehow I still know the prospects. I don't even know how. I was, you know, I'm going to tell another story. I was playing basketball. I played basketball. And one of the guys I play with brought his cousin and his cousin was named Jake. And I said, Jake cousins. And everybody looked at me and had no idea what that meant. And I thought, do I know what that means? I said, I think he's a reliever for the brewers. And I didn't feel like I was watching baseball that closely, but I was still like riffin on Jake cousins. So it's kind of still like all in there.

"Humane rescue alliance, Sam, good morning, today you have calabaza or baz, who's up for adoption. Tell us about him. Absolutely. Calabaza is a beautiful brown and white swatch boy who was a sad story. He was found tied to a fence really sad and alone. But since he came to the humane rescue alliance, his tail has hardly stopped wagging, and he's turned into one of the friendliest goofiest and most grateful dogs you've ever met. Oh, that's great. What's his size now and approximate age? We think he's about two, two and a half years old, and he is 60 pounds. He's also really energetic and athletic and spunky, so he would do well in a home that has an active lifestyle would make a great dog for runners, hikers, or any outdoor enthusiast really. Nice. How about homes with the young kids? What do you think that would work? Potentially, we would suggest bringing the child in and meeting that was definitely. See, doing well with other dogs or is he kind of isolated with right now? He does get along well with other dogs. He does have a rambunctious play style. His foster says, so it would be best for the dogs to meet in advance too if you have a dog in the home. Very good. So how can folks see baz and possibly adopt him? As people are saying, thank God for the Jaguars. All right, question three, the category is aeronautics. Two weeks ago, twins reliever. Two weeks ago, twins reliever, Joan Duran, through the fastest pitch of the MLB MLB season so far, a fastball clocked at 103.3 mph. Within 5, so you get some leeway within 5. Convert that number to kilometers per hour. That is not a fair question. What? Oh my God. Who could do that? That is such a ridiculously unfair. That's not an aeronautics question. That's a math question. So much ruder. Hang on, hang on, no, I'm gonna have to sit there and wait for me. Okay, we have well, we have a lot of we have a lot of listeners in Europe who does one O 3.3 mph, mean anything to them. No. It's actually a huge bummer that I don't know the answer to this because I should because we were in, I was at the Olympics in Tokyo where they also use kilometers. And so I remember this being an issue that the pitch the radar gun was in kilometers and we didn't know. I'm not even going to do the math and I'm going to guess it's like one 95 because I remember it being in the one. One 90 I say one 90. No, I'm sorry. One 66.2. She got 30, which is still amazing. I would still be so embarrassing. For our nautical Friends, that's 89.8 knots. This is such an indictment of the American education. I'm going to put it on them instead of making it. Good. What's the point times .6? Is that how you get it? That's how I always remember that. 6 miles is a kilometer. Yeah. You say that's how I always remember it like this is a thing that you do with regularity. If this had been Fahrenheit Celsius, I would have nailed it. I am great. I wouldn't have gotten that either. Double at nad 30. That one's easy. I'm not multiplying anything by .6. All right, question number four. Potent potable category. Through Tuesday's game, sorry. Who leads all American League pitchers in batter's faced this season? Oh, you know who it is? It's Jordan lyles. Yes. Whoo. It is just eating the innings up. Not really is. Do you have a good nickname? Look at it. Now. So do they do that for? Jordy. Jordy. Oh yeah. Baseball seems to be, I remember backing up the baseball beat when I worked at the star ledger and so you'd go see Joe Girardi a lot and everybody's nickname was just their name with a Y on the end of it and it seems like that's a very baseball thing. So Sam Miller, when he was at ESPN, wrote perhaps the best story on this. He went through and he did like kind of the math on baseball nicknames and then he went to he tried to figure out not even the math. I guess the linguistics on it. And he tried to figure out how they were created. He went through old clips, whatever, and then he showed up at ballparks and he asked players, like if my name is Smith, what do you call me? Smithy. Any compiled all these results, and then he did a guide to creating your own. So I would most likely be because at the, depending on, I think it's because it's a P for P they add ER at the end, typically. There's a whole process. And I highly recommend this Sam Miller story. It's so good. That's pretty great. Try to come up with a nickname for you clowns. You would probably be Ori. Oh. Or you could be steel. Oh, even better. If your first initial is C, sometimes it's sometimes your nickname is your initials. Okay. I can do that. All right, so that built up all the drama to a question 5 here. This is the money ball. This is worth two points. Your three or four four so far. Moneyball category is arts and culture. In the film Moneyball. Jonah Hill's Peter bran character is based on what current NFL team executive who did not sign off on his name being used in the movie. Paul depodesta was the Dodgers after that and I don't know where he is in the NFL, but I know he's there. Yes. That is correct. That's a fantastic. That's a 5. All I wanted to do was avoid zero. It does make me anxious. It's the pressure. I feel like I could have done the kilometer thing if you had given me more time, but everybody's looking at me on Zoom, which is a really stressful experience. While you were while you were doing the math I was actually rewatching adley rushman first career hit on YouTube. So I was looking at you. That seems right. If I had to guess what you were doing. That's probably what I would have guessed. Should we should we be springing this on people? The quiz? Yeah. No. Okay. I think of the three people that we've quiz so far, two of them have not really thoroughly enjoyed it. So I think it's something that we need to better them. I will not give it the full Jenny actually kind of fun review, but I will say it was better than I feared. Okay. That's it. That's good. That's our podcast motto. I also spent a little while being afraid that it was going to be NFL related questions. So I did feel better once I realized that I was not going to be asked to know anything about football. To be clear, before we sign off, I mean, you did a Terrell prior piece for us back in the day back in like 2015. Wow. Yes. And I would be happy to answer questions about Terrell Pryor as he was depicted in that story. Or anything that happened to him before then. Yeah. But now Saunders. I remember there was an interview. I could perhaps answer questions about stories that I specifically have written or stories that maybe fish up or store a specific stories that I have read and like, but if you are going to ask me to answer a question about football information, you're going to be disappointed. And it feels unfair to the listeners. You know, they come here for the great insight that you guys provide. And I don't want to drag the average down. Anyone's ever said about this podcast. They come here continuing to wonder why they come here. They keep coming back. Maybe it's for the Jordan lyles coverage. Yes. The MM QB NFL podcast is Conor or and me Gary grambling. "Now, I don't know if that's the Bill Schmidt decision or attacked, assigned ability issue with Montford. They'd want too much money to sign with us. I don't know. But in fact matters they're drafting hasn't been that great lately. And in this century this decade, I should say so. Don't know. My understanding is built. People know Bill Smith think very highly of it. I only know him superficially, you know, we say hello and all that, But, um, I don't know that he's been it will make all these drafting decisions and In all that. So maybe as a gentle manager he gets, you know we'll get to see him to a draft. Right. He's gonna be in charge is majorly dressed as as the scallion director and the general so he'll be fasting to see what they do in this draft. And if anything does turn out or if we have more, Riley points In the mix. So last thing, and then we'll move on to the Nolan and in the Syriza's tonight, but it didn't come across to me in that zoom with Bill Schmidt the other day that he's going to be able to really I mean, he'll have a say as much as he ever has had to say, But ultimately Trevor story and John Gray is going to be decided by Dick Monfort, right? I mean, that's already been decided. You think they lost 100 they didn't find I had to trade Northern all for financial reasons. Any other crap about saying Well, him. Bryce didn't get along. But you wanted out what? No, no. If there was no pandemic, known there, another would still be Iraqi. They lost $100 million. How do you get that back? You cut a big chunk of it off your table. And they did that. They're gonna continue to do that. In my opinion. I don't see any way to Trevor Story and John Grier here after the All Star break, note their contract. You're coming up there to get something for him. The question we all had with initially was great, right? It's gonna be making that call again because Trades aren't so good. Um, maybe Bill Schmidt makes a better deal. Let's hope he does make a better deal. But there's going to be a deal. I can't see any way that there's not a deal. They just can't afford Trevor Story and John Gray anymore. Not until they get right financially. And I said this, you know, I I would prefer that Dick Monfort sell the team and stuff. But maybe putting a scout and in charge of these decisions to an extent is actually I think what we want more than anything else, mark as Rockies fans It's just a direction. We just want to know what we're doing. If we go full on Astros and just tear it down and lose 100 games for the next three years, But we're acquiring all these stud prospects and our farm system looks better than I think people will be okay with that. Because it's a direction. We just Iraqis have just been this happen. Half out were drafted develop. But yet all we're doing is signing these really bad free agents like Ian Desmond, and I think Rocky's fans just wanted direction more than anything else. No, that's very fair. In fact, There are the title of My article is between Iraqis and a hard place because they are right in that middle ground. You're talking about stuff right there in the middle, and I think that Direction they should take is pretty clear to most people, and it's not the direction Bill Schmidt would take that building. Old school guys. The dinosaurs like me. He's old guy. The analytics thing, on the other hand, is wait. Tampa Bay with a smaller payroll in the Rockies, less revenues in the Rockies. Less everything that Iraqis wins. The American Legion takes Dodgers in the old church. That's what moms Iraqis need to follow. And Dick needs to do to invest in the athletic department of You know, I just laugh if he's a T shirt department analytics, right, You can't do things like that. You can't And that's the other gentleman. Here's a look at the rock is like one of the spending money on create $256 million on free agents to 2016 for a negative 3.7 war. No, that's just hideous. And you couldn't spend that money on analytics and have the best Alex Department of baseball and you'd be right where campaigns you could compete with the Dodgers. If you had that kind of thing. Campus as a model hopefully has a model. It's there to be followed. You don't have to outspend the Dodgers on yet. The Dodgers unfortunate also have that model and they're very good at it. They have 26 people in the police department and none of you do laundry. So you know it. They're simply uphill battle, But Rocky stands would just be fine in the Rockies were competitive with the Dodgers. Just be competitive, you know, and like you said Pick that direction that direction should be drafting developed. And you know, Alex, and that's how you develop but find the right guys to draft in the right guys to bring here and all that. And the right guys to the player development. A big part of not just to you draft I go back to the familiar just baffles me. What would Sam Hilliard be? If he was a rock if you the Dodger Six with five could run like an Olympic sprinter as a great arm. What would he be if he was a Dodger? They develop those guys. They have impact rookies coming out the woodwork in that organization. Iraqis are many Don't And that's that's the developmental issues much I don't know. I think that the scouting issue because I was drafted Sam Miller the heartbeat looking at those measurables But he's not developed the other player, and if people I talk to say it because there's a lousy player development In the minor league. Oh, just so so it's like it's like the Let the little boy with his fingers in the dike, right. It's just you get rid.
