"It once appeared that Sam Houston was going to end president of the United States. The surrogate son, a president Andrew Jackson, former congressman, governor of Tennessee. The political powers that be insisted that to continue on with his political career, Sam Houston needed to find a wife. Of course, the wealthiest families around Nashville started trotting out their daughters. In much the same way they showed off their prize racing horses and Houston married one of them. The marriage blew up immediately and in spectacular fashion. So much so Houston resigned the governorship. He bought nine barrels of whiskey, and he ran off to rejoin his Cherokee tribe, now in Arkansas and Oklahoma. And apparently decided to drink his sorrows away. The Cherokees, for their part, took away his childhood name of Raven and replaced it with big drunk. Now Houston did have his moments of clarity. He acted as the Cherokees emissary to the government. Any new well that many former Tennesseans were moving into the to House region of Mexico. Now, these were rarely the Americans who were brought in under Stephen F. Austin's land grant system. Legal immigration and that had been granted by the government of Mexico. No. Most were illegal immigrants, squatters taking whatever land they wanted, and if anyone challenge them, they would fight under the right of first possession. Now in Mexico City. They had read the report of General Tehran who had warned if they didn't throw the illegal American immigrants out, then give.

The city's namesake and former governor and president of texas in one of the things that david loved about sculpting sam houston was working on the head and specifically the is head is about twelve feet tall and i get looking in his eyes and i love the way it's gone looks right at you. It was a big job so in the middle of it. David decided to take a little break. Go on a road trip. Take a quick vacation to visit friends in canada and driving. Back home decided mount rushmore. "My guest this hour, Robert Caro Pulitzer prize winning author of the powerbroker and this series the years of Lyndon Johnson. His latest book is called working, Robert, Carol. We talked a little bit about your move. It wasn't a short movie it was three years long down to the Texas hill country where you and your wife and co researcher on could could more intimately and clearly understand the ground in the earth that gave rise to Lyndon Johnson and his motivations tell me a little bit about Linden Johnson's brother Sam Houston. He was a big talker. And a Bragar what happened when you met Sam Houston? Well, it wasn't so much when I met him because the first few times he had a reputation as a heavy drinker at also is a guy, and I found his talk was full of braggadocio and provide auto exaggerations and a lot of. Stories that he told me the sorta turned out not to be true. And I sort of said, you know, this is. When someone sends you down to fourth false path to do research. He wastes a lot of your time, and I sort of this. I wasn't going to use anything that he told me because I couldn't rely on. So during then like, maybe a year pay us. I hear that during this year. He's had this terrible operation for cancer one day. I'm walking around the streets of Johnson city chatting with people. I did a lot of that just to get a feel of the place, and there is coming towards me. And I had heard that he had had this terrible operation he had stopped drinking, and we went to have a Cup of coffee and a cafe in Johnson city, and I found that as we were sitting on the counter talking to me. She was talking to me. He was a different man. He was very quiet all the bravado was gone. I thought of a way by this time. I knew that whatever the secret was that formed Linden Johnson's character. A big part of it was these this terrible horse relationship with his father who had been very successful Representative in the house of rep Texas house of representatives. But then had lowest his ramps had become the laughing stock of Johnson city. So I got the National Park Service to say I could bring Sam Houston Johnson into the Johnson boyhood home late in the day after closing time when the tourists who are all going, and I asked him to sit at the same dining room table in the same place. They had recreated this home. So looked exactly like had when Johnson was a boy to sit in the same place as he had when at dinner he sat at this plank table, you know, the father was in one end in a big chair. The mother was at the other end on a bench on one side of the table. His three sisters. That and on the other side Sam, Houston Johnson and Lyndon Johnson. Sat I said now Sam Houston. Let's recreate one of these augments between your father and Linden soda. He suddenly was shouting it back and forth. Linen. You're a failure. Always going to be a failure. What are you? You just a bus inspector. And now I felt finally he was in the mood to remember things more accurately, and I said now Sam Houston, I want you to tell me again, those wonderful stories anecdotes that you told me that appeared in will the previous biographies of that other people told me just give me some more details. Tell me these stories again, I'll never forget this was a pause. And he said, I can't. And I said why not he said because they never happened. And then he set without a further prompting he set out to tell me the story. Of very different story than it would have been told before about Linden Johnson's terrible boyhood in this time. When I went back to the other people who are involved in these islets dotes, they said yes that is what happened and give me more details. And I was able to tell a different story about his youth. And when you got this truth out of Sam, Houston Johnson Linden's brother that you're sitting in the Johnson boyhood home, courtesy who the National Park Service, essentially a museum at this point. But you're you're sitting behind him as he sits at the dining room table of have you been in analysis before? No because no when I when I when I learned this. I said this is what they do what they used to do in analysis. They they put the patient on the couch sit behind them, and they associate and I thought, oh, maybe he's maybe he's been in before. Well, tell you the truth. I didn't know that. I'll tell you what I knew I brought him in at dinnertime about six o'clock. So the very shadows in the room, the setting sun, the very shadows. In the room would be the same shadows that he had sat in when he was a boy at the dinner table. I had him sit as I said in the same chair as he had sat in as a boy, I sat be the hind him because I wrote in this book working I said, I didn't want anyone at that table who is not a Johnson of Johnson city. Meaning I wanted him to imagine that dinner with his sisters and his mother's father and really put him. So I didn't want my presence to be a distraction to your books Robert Carroll are filled with with scenes like this scenes of people's real lives. Whether it's Sam Johnson, Houston brother of the of the president or. Or people who were never known in any other way. The the person whose apartment was raised to make one of Robert Caro's expressways across the Bronx, the farmer who lost his land or the black woman who tried to register to vote during before the dawn of civil rights are while civil rights was raging. It's a constant theme throughout your work. Not just the powerful man in this case at the top. But the lives affected by that power of. That's that's you've made since the beginning. It's cost you a lot of work and a lot of pages turned in a lot of interviews. I'm sure at times with people who weren't keen to talk. Why why this mission why this choice that is that is threaded through all of your work? Well, you know, I think I said before if I didn't I should have. It's not always a conscious decision. You make would certainly you. Don't know it at the beginning, you just learn or grows on you. As you go along. You don't always know the reason for I remember that a turning point for me. Was when I was writing about Robert Moses, you know, he built six hundred twenty seven miles of expressways and parkways around New York City, if you drive on an expressway Parkway in that area whole New York, you're driving on a road built by Robert Moses. So I'm reading every textbook on the building of highways and everyone says mentions the phrase, the human cost of highways, not one showed what the human cost was or even examined in detail. What the human cost was I said, the I know I think I found a way to do this. I'll take one mile of the six hundred twenty seven miles of miles of the crow immoral of the cross Bronx expressway, which he tour right through on a straight line through a dense blocks neighborhood tearing down fifty four apartment houses, he displaced, I think it was fifteen thousand people the whole area turned into this vast slum. And I said I'm going to try to show what happened to that neighborhood. That's not an easy decision to make Todd since you remembering this now, we were broke at the time. I had had a very small advanced to write the powerbroker. I'm you not by this time. I wasn't fooling myself about how long the book was gonna take. I said it's going to take six months to do the shafter read all the weekly newspapers from the neighborhood get a picture of what it's like find all these people who lived there. They've all moved the way toward to track down people sometimes and interview them, but when I interview them, I remember of me some of them will live when they had this community this neighborhood. They really had something they had friends and neighbors even though they were lower middle class people. They had a real nice life. They they liked the alive. Now, they were scattered all over some more in little apartments like developments like coop city. He some were living with their kids in Westchester some were living in housing projects. I found a lot of them. And when I would interview them, and I would type up the notes my notes on what they said at night. The word that was in almost all the interviews over and over again was lonely, and I thought Moses could have put this highway in a wrote exactly two blocks away would have been the power level route. And it would have spared all required with tearing down not fifty four apartment houses but six small tenements, but he didn't do that. Because to use that route at the end of it. He would have the demolish a business that was very profitable for the Bronx democratic a number of democratic politicians. I said I want to show what happens to a neighborhood to the people in when one of these highways goes through took a long time to research and write. But I'm not sorry. I did them a long time to research and write it. And and you write something about yourself that so many of these cases of turning the page turning the page. Never never leave a page unturned getting the next interview. The next fact it's because you had to I couldn't bear to go on with the story until I knew this fact, and there's something about that. That strikes me a little bit familiar, and I'm going to ask you about it in just one moment on Todd's like this is one A. Robert Kerr that drive that you talk about in yourself. I I have to get the answer. I I can't write it until I know this answer I have to say a that sounds very LBJ to me. I mean you've written over and over he had to win. It wasn't a choice. He had to have it. He couldn't lose. He couldn't rest until he had it. He had to win. And I don't know if I'm reaching. But is there a part of Johnson drew you to him because maybe you're the same way? Well, you never know the answer to things like that. And I don't know the answer to that. I don't think so. But I don't really know what drew me to Johnson. Was my interest in political power? And my thinking that if I picked the right guy, I could show how political power works. Not what we learned in textbooks. But the roar naked realities of political power how it works. In fact, Johnson used political power. He was a genius in its use. And I felt if I could show how he how he accumulated how he got power how he used and the ends both good and for ill. If you want to use a phrase that a used it for I would be a chaos thing. A little new light on the processes of government and political power in America. Well, Richard dropped this in our inbox in the few minutes before we go in phone calls between LBJ and Richard Russell LBJ lays out all the reasons why he should stay out of Vietnam. And then he proceed. To go in. Anyway, clearly, this consummate politician had been promoted to his level of incompetence. That's what Richard has to say. And he points to a period that you're pointing to in your in your final book to sixty civil rights, and of course, with Lyndon Johnson, his undoing and that's Vietnam. Yes. Well. That's you know, made you try to. I'm not saying, I'm succeeding in doing this. But one of the things that I'm going to try to do m trying to do in this last volume. Is to figure out and to show how this country how great power gets into a mess like this. You know, he sent almost six hundred thousand men to fight in the Joan goals of Asia hair for world away. Think of that almost six hundred thousand men we dropped more bombs on Vietnam that we dropped on Germany during World War Two. We had fifty eight thousand. But the total number of jet dead from that war if you say Southie. Let me soldiers me civilians North Vietnamese soldiers northbound, I I'm not yet gotten a figure that I'm happy with. But I will. But it certainly for north of two million people killed in that war. You say for.

"Been cousin died that's tough on a couple levels. You're losing a lot their family end up partner. And then he ran then she ran the in with the slave. She owned for a while. So that's nice, and then she went to South Carolina because the Mexicans were threatening. And it's I read that she destroyed her own into keep it from falling Mexican hands. But I've type believe in that I wouldn't. So she went to South Carolina. And she she married. Jacob everley. And then she came back to awesome eighteen thirty nine and she ran the Eberle house, which was the boarding house where Sam Houston live. Brought he was an awesome. Okay. Right. Right. The president's office. So she under she understands what the archives to Austin. She's a landowner, and she's apparently not happy. The capital had been moved. Also, if the archives are gone automobile screwed so everybody's spread the word around Austin and a small mob gathered on Austin's main street. There was a loaded. "But at least they call at least they call them peg leg instead of like half, Tom or whatever. So so all he has left arm at a left leg the other the right? Always all left. Yeah. The right parts the right. These parts are gone. Okay. That is not great tricky. Yeah. So possibly because of those incidents are PTSD. He had a hair trigger temper an impulse to violence and cannon not great with his wife. So very few people use the name peg leg to his face. Like you. He's not going to hurt me. He also wanted election to be mayors. Six months after he lost his arm who's gonna fuck in vote against the guy blew up his arm. Right. So then it's. Term for mayor ended. He becomes the Commissioner of the general land office. So now peg leg was told by Sam Houston to prepare the archives for transport, and he greed about Austin, quote, I cannot consider the archives at all safe at this point and should be most willing to yield the implicit obedience to the order of the president if the removal of the archives to place of greater safety, just say, yes. Yes. The military commander in Austin. Colonel Henry Jones was not having it. Okay. He got all the angry awesome citizens together to discuss the situation, and they formed a committee of vigilance to guard the archives and stop their removal. Okay. Nice titles strong. Now Sam Houston called a special session of congress on June twenty-seventh to find a solution to resolve the matter. He tried to explain how important is to move the archives from Austin because it's a dangerous place to keep them in the legislature was like. And are they they're reticent because of his recent bias towards the city of Houston. No. They want to keep it there because they by any means most of them live in Austin, and they own property there. And if everything goes away, then property values dropped sure. So the hearts are in the right? And September peg-leg wrote to the vigilance committee and citizens of Austin. He said interfering with their move the archives had the potential to put the records and the Republic at a great risk K. If the enemy captured the archives, quote, it would be a greater victory, then the most glorious battle one in the field. Okay. This is papers apparently super import. Sure. No. It's like national treasure. Then peg-leg ordered. All the business of the general land office to be suspended until further notice some and Austin said they would burn the records rather than let them leave so worried about the threats PEC move the boxes of the land office into his private office. He's doing it. He's just moving into his office in the same building. You took it all out of the main room and put it in the back room, basically stood really wants change in the fall Mexican troops attack. San Antonio again and San Houston brought congress back on December fifth this time in Washington on the brazos, which he made the capital. Okay. So the Senate president did not like Sam and he held up the vote with a procedural moves. So Sam couldn't take it December tenth he secretly ordered to Texas. Army officers to gather a force of twenty four men and go get the archives from. With quotes, secrecy, officiency and dispatch and to take them to Washington on the press. No sorry. "So Sam Houston Austin was to remote not developed to close to Mexican native American. It's awful. It's awful close to close to the enemies specifically, the Comanche Cherokee, and then Sam was elected to be president a second time in one thousand nine hundred forty one what's Genda. With seventy seventy five percent of the votes in love him. He did not hide how much he hated Austin. Calling it quote, the most unfortunate site on earth for a. What we're as poll numbers like they're good or not good. How is that working for a seat? One of the things. That's so great about Texas is so big that the hatred between the cities is like a country. Don't really is. It's like a year where they're just like unlike, you know, like the English and the English the jubilees blue Cubans jeans. Texans that with other cities, fuck sauced and may. Awesome to San Antonio. You wanna get hurt? San antonio. Without fucking. They don't know how to barbecue there. I want time when I visited Houston. I was with a girlfriend at the time and we walked into this bar, and I had a hat on. And the guy goes you're gonna have to take the head off. And I go, okay. And there was a hat bag, and as I'm taking the hat off. I look and everyone in there has cowboy hats on and I go how come everyone gets to where the cowboy hats goes cowboy hat and have. "And he was elected president of Texas in eighteen thirty six. So there there were presidents of states. Yes. Well, there wasn't a state. Okay. President of the country entries a country of Texas. Okay. Right. Fuck off. I'll get. Jeez. Of course, you had to yell out the Republic. Tarbuck? I missed the boo guys so much. They named the town after him called Houston. If you've heard it's down there. They keep dishes in their hotels. Used ones used ones. Would you like a room with without a us? Do. Oh, well, I did say with online, but I want something now. But hopefully, there's a us do shop on the shelf. And if it's so far up on the shelf that I'm able to see a little bit of it to be like, what are you? And then touch it with my hand that would be gimme gimme gimme we were going to call this place, a loft of do shoes as you should've just called it a loft. Well. I'll sleep well, knowing it's clean not to do. The area. So Houston was named the capital of Texas. Now, the republic's archives which included military records facial papers land titles war banners. And trophies the seal the government, international treaties. We're all moved from Columbia to Houston. Okay. The people of Texas wanted the US to annex the new Republic. So most people want most people wanted text to become part of the US. Right. Some people did but most people trying to normalize the relationship with Mexico. He released Santa Ana okay off off with you. Now. A little fella. Right. And he then he comes back, and he's bad Santa to leave office. Wait, San Sam Houston. I leave office because the Texas Republican Texas constitution Barda president from serving terms in a row. Okay. So he then he then served in the house of representatives from eighteen thirty nine hundred eighteen forty one marabou Lamar became president. I think we're on the mar street, right? I can fuck I could make shit. I can bring together. People can't even know it shows that you're really studious when you shit five times during your. Thank you do shit shit shit guy. I love the shit connect ship connector aids. Be the funds shit. That's right. His two big issues. Lamar titties issues were wanting to expand Texas all the way to the Pacific. Bolt. And some people just said that we are. They started saying we're we're all the way some Texans just paid like, oh, we go all the way across now. Sure. And then the other thing he wanted to do was exterminate all the native Americans. So that were too big plans for Texas. Which they sounded outdated. And then Lamar moved the capital from Houston to Austin in eighteen thirty nine because it was in the center of Texas. Okay. A lot of people thought this was stupid and the most opposed to moving the capital to Austin was Sam. I don't know if you noticed last name is so but it says. Like what length of time? Are we talking since he's left and since he's since he hasn't been president. Yeah. A sense not that long. It's been like a year. Okay. Because I'm picturing him like bedridden in his old age. Like, no, no, these are just to your terms. Okay. So he's so he's varius, obviously, he's still in the house of representatives. I mean, he's still a guy. Okay. He Samson from me thinking that old people would stay in the house of representatives that. -magine? If it looked like a thriller video that would be shocking. "Spanish words, he had. So Sam now had seven hundred eighty three men. Okay. I've seen a bunch of different numbers for Santa Ana puts probably around fourteen hundred. Okay. And they have nowhere to go. Sam SAM's trap between a river, and a Marsh just fucking stuck there heart place as we say. So the next day. So they get their and Santa has like all right. Well, let's let's take a rest. We got him. Move. And after. Apps we fight. Then they didn't fight the next day Sunday. I mean, football's on take a breather. And then the next day at three thirty in the afternoon, the Mexicans took their traditional siesta. Okay. So we are at what two and a half days of pretty much sleeping on and a half one and a half asleep against chilling. Okay. So so they're taking a nap. So then then Sam saw this and ordered his men to attack what and literally caught Santa Anna's men napping. No the battle lasted eighteen minutes. Let. This forever. This is where the phrase remember the Alamo came from because they're screaming, and is there killing all these guys. The Texans yielded as they slaughtered the Mexicans while Sam was protesting. He was like Jesus easy with a slaughter. And some of the Mexicans were heard to me. No alamo. As they're being killed. Oh, you don't hear that? That's not a phrase, you guys here yelled out a lot move. Move. So same was in the position of killing. Sleeping while he came. For that. If you're if you have an army, okay was just killed your your your fucking fort all your guys. And then and then you you're there and they start taking a nap. I mean, Jesus Christ feel bad during the nap at some point. He was like, whoa. This is fucked up come on that guy's really asleep not ham. Some of these guys are dreaming. Look at their legs moving their fastest Slade. Have some respect? Here's what we're going to do. We're going to wake up with Graham, crackers and milk. And we're going to do it the right way. So. Six hundred Mexicans were killed in the nap in eighteen minutes. I was fucking Bertel. He's just Christ. Hundreds were wounded the Texans only had nine killed and thirty wounded. The moral or the thing to take away is if you're a big army, no sleepy's. I main or how about have a guy on guard. Yeah. I think what it is. Is you sleep in shifts that sort of take a bunch of difference? Yes. Yeah. I bet you anything. I didn't look into this. I wanted to. But no time anything that in in Mexico. They're all like, okay. It's just time. Then everyone both sides, right? This happened. Like what the fuck? Yes. The rules. Three thirty to five. No. Wow. You guys are ding. Wow. Even for war. Wow. Think you know war? We got to put this on the Geneva Convention. So one of the wounded was Sam who took a musket ball in the right leg. Just above his ankle bone was shattered. Santa Anna tried to slink out. He took off his general's uniform and put on a regular soldiers close and then Americans captured him aways away. But they didn't know who he was just thought he was a. John Gruber in them right now. And then they they capture them and they bring him back to camp just thinking these regular Mexican soldier. And then as they pull into the camp is a bunch of Mexican soldiers who are like L president. No, no, no. I I look just like him. Just a regular soldier donate for those loot at all. No, I actually saw him a couple of minutes ago over there could tell by the uniform. I am not we switched just switched phase faces. Have you seen face to face off? It's like that. So. It's a regular guy. I think this guy's president any any of us. So Santana was forced to sign a treaty granting Texas independence regulations Houston Sam Houston stayed on briefly to go. "Ought to sue tomorrow. Good look at me out of Kat. Also, most of the men have his army did not have experience. So this is pretty good. Yeah. Yeah. As far as what you want. You want guys aren't ready and most don't have guns. Yeah. So he orders a retreat. He's like everybody get the fuck out of here. We're going through. Come on to for twenty. And he ordered everybody living in the area to come with them. He's come on everybody. We're gonna fuck out. Over raider. So with no peppery preparation. People just started leaving their homes, and they're all heading towards for the US border. Okay. This became known as the runaway scrape the entire areas of accurate it. Okay. That night twenty of his men deserted. I don't have a gun. So I'll be over in New Mexico. There's wanted to fight Santa Ana and get revenge for the Alamo. But Sam was like, yeah, there's like a thousand of them. So and then most you guys don't have gone. So what if you listen to me, and we run? I've got some songs. No twelve actually no for an album mean, I don't wanna like push New one. one time, he's saying juice. We had thirteen suicides. Thirteen suicides last time. He's saying that's why we got rid of the guns. So concept album. Wake me up. If you want to hear it. Okay. I'm good. I'm good. No. We're not saying we're retreat. There was those grew. Have guns and wanted to prove that. We're good. Dude's gone up. We've got one gun a new gone. So he knows they'll be slaughtered. If they fight. So the journeys a nightmare constant rain people are just fucking drop dead. I remember there's tons of people fleeing. So Santa Ana splits up as troops to cover a bunch of different ground because Texas is big. So he's trying to find Sam Houston and his men. Right. And when interim president Burnet heard that Sam was retreating. He was furious. And he sent a message quote, the enemy are laughing. You to scorn you must fight them. You must retreat further the country expects you to fight Samba's. Like fuck you. I mean is that not just the ease? That's like the easiest thing to do when you're on a couch where they're not what you Hari up try harder. Good lord. You foolish thing where you kill people spaghetti. I'm getting my toenails. Spaghetti and nails. Someone's having a man day. So Sam knew he knew they'd lose. If they fought and Texas would be toast. But as he continued on where Texas toast. I love the stuff. Yes. A male not complete without it. So he continues on as continues on all those people were banning their farms and their houses start joining up with his army. He's he's getting more and more men as he goes along. And they they double in size, and then Santa Anna caught up with him at San sinto. Yeah. I know I'm from California. I know that if I can say..

"So. So then in eighteen thirty four Mexico became a military dictatorship with Santa Ana run in the shit. Okay. So almost people don't know this. But it wasn't just Texas that rebelled almost all Mexican states rebelled. So it was a whole fucking jam going on so noca- Deutsches nacogdoches nacogdoches. That's right. It was misspelled someone told me about back there. They said that one's misspelt. Nacogdoches the Neka. Donate him. They made him commander in chief of. Nacogdoches? I guess so he's the president. He's the commander in chief of the town. Okay. I didn't really understand this part. I was like, okay. I'm going to just keep going on that makes sense and the president of lurker dosier snow. And so he went to Sam Houston went to New Orleans and Botta general's uniform. Handle that situation. I will be I will be right back. So in order to be a lawyer someone just needed to be like, he's a lawyer now when you order to be a general you just needed to know where there was a Halloween store open. Basically. And then some and then like some guys in town have to be like, your are big share. Okay. So he's now a general because he was not generally commander in chief. Sorry, but he's got a generals out of nacogdoches. So so he's a commander in chief of the city and he's wearing general's. That's right. Yeah. Okay. It's fucking Texas. No for sure anything goes back, then back then. So along with John Austin Wharton and others Sam helped organize a provincial government for Texas. Okay. So they're basically going to they're telling Mexico. Fuck. All right. Yeah. Well, I mean, you get a generals out for your pretty clear. And then the Texas provisional government made Sam the Major General of the Texas army weird. It's like the secret. But with clothes, we I'm sure that I meet and he walked in with a general's uniform on everyone was like, oh, he's the one we've read about scriptures. Him. And I'm March, I eighteen thirty six Texas declared independent all those medals sport chocolate. So. Some of them have nuts chocolate. Cooler still jingle. On march. I eighteen thirty six Texas declared independence from Mexico. -gratulations -gratulations. Sam was now officially in charge of the entire army. The Texas government was modeled on the US congress. There is a two chamber government elected by the people accept black people and native American people. So there's a chamber government elected by almost. A lot of the people not all of them. There are about seventy thousand officials citizens if you don't include the other people. That because they had different skin. So why people right? So you're counting the counter kinda white people counting the white people. Right. Wingmen? Yeah..

"Somehow the school is successful. And he paid off all his debts. So it's not his own school now. Yeah, he said oh hits his own school school. Okay. So he's got you could do that back. Then you'd be like what you can kind of do that. Now, if you're rich. But yeah, you could do that. Yeah. Yeah. You You just just. at school. Right. So nobody was like looking over his shoulder. Look over his shoulder so damn tall. But yeah. No. It's like a charter school. Okay. Which I hear the bath. Great the bat. Oh problem. No issues on look into that at all. Nope. Making it better. But like his dad Sammy was not good with money and soon he was back in debt. Okay. And then that's when the army came around recruiting in Maryville because the war of eighteen twelve what's going on. Okay. They're offering a silver dollar as a signing bonus. And Sam joined up just say, no. Correct. A dollar a second. Julia. We'll find out if that's racist later. Twitter. Giant who was related to like? What you guys did was not cool Slyke in this day and age, good luck host and the Oscars. His first battle in the war was fighting under Major General, Andrew Jackson. Old hickory. Now, I know that I said they were fighting a war against the British. But Andrew Jackson was fighting the creeks. Sure, he was head aside war while he loved to key love to kill native Americans. So he's He's just just sort sort of. of fi. He's like, well, you guys are doing that. I'm going to clear this out. Yeah. The battle is a standard Jackson slaughter that he was known for Sam was wounded but kept fighting, and he was and even they were stopped binding was like, I'm still going Andrew Jackson. That guy's awesome. He got shot and he's still running around. So he got he got shot in a couple of places his wounds would bother them for the rest of his life. But he was back with his regiment in eighteen fifteen and eighteen seventeen. He was a first Lieutenant so he's fucking rolling up through the shirt through return, right and eighteen eighteen e went with a Cherokee delegation to meet with the secretary or president Monroe. So he sort of straddling both worlds kind of like, he's he's in the military. But he's also like he knows him. Very well like, well, why don't you represent them negotiate? Okay. Okay. And then you can fuck them over whatever they said to but wait he's trying to help. He's trying to help. But I'm sure they were like, well, you're one of our boys. Right. Yeah. So what happened was some Cherokee signed a treaty to give up all Tennessee. And then a bunch of other Cherokee were like, no what? Right. And they're like. Yeah. But Frank signed it. So he he's all you guys. Right. And they're like, no, well, he signed it. So again, I read the fine print Tennessee's ours. We've got some great ideas. Oh my God. It's going to be great jolly would Hello. So he goes he goes there to talk to the secretary Warren president Monroe. But all he did was talk the Cherokee into leaving Tennessee without fighting. He was like you'll get killed by these guys. Okay. So they bail daily, Tennessee. But then he showed up the secretary of war's office wearing Cherokee clothing, Lou and the secretary lost his shit and just starting to fucking screaming at them. And then Sam had to resign. Okay. What? What was his angle? Well, he's in the mill. He's in the military, right? And they're like all native Americans are bad, and then become rolling in in enemies outfit that help. No. That's not so still is. So we had a shitty plam. It'd be like if you came in dressed like a Russian doll, right? And then I got to be the president. No idea what you're talking about. That's what we call a half applause where? Applaud. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Applause. So he goes back to Tennissee, right? Okay. Gets into politics moves up the political ranks all the way to governor and eighteen twenty seven, okay. Sam Houston's fucking killing it fucking shit. Then he married. Nineteen year old Elisa Alan, how old is he? He's thirty nine. Okay. So definitely pervy because people didn't live as long, but it's also awesome. Don't dave. No. No, no.
