"To this crazy. Scientists urologist a bunch of kooks. And they don't want to deal with it so vannatter bush who was in charge of that worked with them to get the sign. Get the pilots to try it out and they did. Nothing happened for almost a year. So finally he said the problem was transferred the other way so we got the scientists the crazy artists to get in the carpets with the pilot and they discovered when they were flying over the atlantic or when they were flying over battlefield the pilots when they were being shot at fine hundreds miles an hour. They didn't want to deal with in a thirteenth switches on these crazy boxes worked but there are so many switches there. We didn't have time to figure it out. They realized that technology was great. The user interface was lousy. They went back identified. This created this display the movies with the oscilloscope and sweeping line. Put it in the plans. Planes went out within thirty days to germany. Lost one third of ubud fleet two months later the german admiral sent a message. All the boats in the atlantic withdraw. The dallas lost. The lanes were clear to resupply england. The lanes were cleared for an allied invasion your so. That's how managing the transfer is so important. You need to be gardner. Not right they say you need to set up a loose shots to have in a business sense. Your soldiers are are actually delivering. The profits from franchises. That you've already established you gotta make sure that there is. They're separated but there's a channel of communication between the now you also write about different types of lucia. Some of them are more about strategy. Some of them are more about products tells about that why matters this is enormously especially today because there are these two types of it. There's a a product. Explain what i mean. But there's a product that everybody says will never work whether that was telephone where people sit out. It doesn't work that if it does is just going to be a toy the transistor you could never make stretch out of solid state devices or personal computers digital products and people said could never work. Small shifts in strategy are subtle changes in how you deliver stuff to customer. That had known technique. I'll give you an example sam walton. When he was a young kid wanted to open a retail store. So i want to do it where people are which is big cities so of course it turns out his wife didn't like big cities and said i'll sam honey support your dream but i'm not letting town with more than ten thousand people so he liked being married also liked clam hunting and he discovered. There was one region in the country whether these four states that are you know media points in four different quayle seasons. We said. let me go there. Because i'm not gonna quayle all year round and also remarried. Win win bentonville arkansas. That's where he opened his store new technologies. He just moved a slightly different place. Sold stuff a little bit cheaper white out the entire industry that was s title in child. No technology so the problem is most people have a blind spot to one or the other especially today in our culture today. We worship products. Brian product these product. Innovators myths subtle shifts in strategy. And i'll give you an example. I mean if you remember when ibm was dominant computer company. In the world. The industry was ibm. In the seven dwarfs it was so much bigger than any other computer company. And what happened to that. They're not even players in that in that computer business now. What happened to them. They had a blind spot what was by. They saw themselves as a company and that was true for thirty or forty or fifty years. People think the personal computer took out. Ibm not what happened. Ibm was the dominant product company. And they thought what we do. Is we make people buy our products. Hey personal computers and other product. Let's do it. And they went all in and personal computers and there were a little bit after apple a little bit after commodore and tiara and radio shack and they ate their lunch. They went to number one they at billions of five billion sales. In first three years they were the dominant personal computer company happened. They missed a subtle shift in strategy. They missed with customers cared about so in the course of building. This product is everybody buys. Ibm brand because we're ibm. We make the best products in another product by this stuff in the course of building that computer. They said the stuff inside doesn't matter slow stuff like oh i don't know. The operating system outsource that to at the time and thirty two person company in seattle called microsoft and other components that called the microprocessor. That also doesn't matter what matters is product in our brand because that's what people want the product. So let's we're going to outsource to a little Chipmaker company that's kinda struggling financially in silicon valley called intel fast forward. They didn't realize customers didn't care about the brand. They just wanted to send emails to their friends and for that. The brand of the box doesn't matter what matters is standards stuff like software microprocessor. Today the combined. Mike marquis of microsoft and intel is well over one and a half trillion dollars. Ibm is not even a tenth of that. So that's what happens when you miss your blind spot. What is a lesson from the book about how to be effective as a leader in a large organization. The three things you need to do one into set by since. I don't have a very good memory. I remember it. Visually i remember it as an ice cube a garden hoe and a heart ice cube separate your artists in your soldiers does different jobs different languages. You need different systems. Ice and water number to be a garden. Moses you gotta manage the transfer number three may actually be the most important anyways and it's not talked about as much and it's it's so frustrating people get so wrong number three. I mean love your artists and soldiers equally. I'll give you an example. A friend of mine is a well-known magazine and his putting is in charge of putting out an issue every thirty days and she was complaining to me. She said the senior management is just always in love with whoever squeaking the loudest about the the latest shiny penny in about others as we could deal with this purge blah blah blah blah and pays no attention to the people who are doing ninety five percent of the work of putting out a magazine every day. So how does it make. Those people feel like crap taken for granted. Why raining little scrapers. Getting all the attention from the ceo's what you find is truly great leaders have learned to balance and appreciate because you need just having an idea is getting the ball from your your goal to your five yard line. The next ninety five yards down the field is about turning that idea into a product about delivering product and then on time on budget. You need the soldiers for that ours for that and they both have to be appreciated. And let's go so for the many folks here who are at being worst building company. So they're at they're very embryonic stage. What are some lessons.

And he's looking back at an half may west. Yes these by people. My peeps very cool i. Let's begin with our first. Guess we're quite happy. To have chris meltzer with us. He is the curator for the livable planet film festival which is part of sf indie fest. It's going to begin on the twenty second of this month and run until may second and what it is. They're bringing sixty seven independent feature short films from around the world that focused on green and environmental issues and both on and revealing ways. Chris welcome to the show. And i guess that's part of the thing too. Is that a lot of times a film will be playing at an important. Not be entertaining are fun to watch despite the importance of it. So that's what you guys. Do you make sure this stuff is fun as well right. Yeah most definitely Be fifty kind of the kind of punk rock. Trust if things aren't fun It's just. They're not necessarily worth doing. And so we saw this opportunity to launch an environmental film festival. That wasn't all about just kind of you know your vegetables but also cussing really great stories and kind of immerse you in other words. They're going to better understand what's going on on our planet but also Just see some really good films. I love sf festa. This is jam. While i just love and yeah high on. And and Tell us about a couple of the real fun ones. yeah Well one of my favorite films just gone crab season which is kind of Vision impaired fisherman on the coast of france and so each day goes out and has kind of unique way of going grabbing. I mean i myself in the bay area punk wrapping before but because of Scavenges around And he just has this kind of unique touch the they'll find animals and it's just it's just kind of You kind of feel like you're on another planet Based on that of on the normandy and things them to grab seasonal really great so You know another kind of fun film that we have is Red heaven and That's a film about the visa. Six people that want to train to go to mars and so kind of like biosphere. They wind up being kind of isolated over the course of about a year and so just kind of see the psychological exit Being tenders Separated somebody else. Also kind of having creating this kind of artificial mars environment It's just a really beautiful film that also one of those ones where You know you know. People think about running Ultramarathons and things these people just in it for a year of kind of dealing with all the challenges You know as well as the closer that'll be the closing night film. The opening night film is landfall and like anything like a comedian. Who's gonna have the big thing at the andhra fireworks. Show grand finale. You wanna grab everybody's attention and so prentice probably cool how you sit around and you discuss with your staff. What will open it. What will close Tell us a little bit more about that. Opening night film landfall please. Yeah so Windfall It's really m interesting because many of us have heard about that. You know to hurricanes. That hit puerto rico. Several years ago hurricane. Maria can't remember the other thirteen at the moment and Similar kind of recovery efforts. But this is kind of a film that kind of goes on the ground and stuff shows these different communities trying to kind of reconcile with the kind of clothing tasks with the united states. Which i think you know really kindly with some the kind of reconciliation things going on Out there in the world But then also people just kind of coming together to support each other and kind of rebuild their communities and cities in ways that they want so. It's an interesting collision of like environmental film article film and then also Just kind of human interest story. That's how people survive really kind of tumultuous times How do you decide what's an indie. And what's a major you know like. She decided to certain amount of money that the movie's done for yeah. It's a it's an interesting question i sometimes. I think it's a vibe you know I mean a lot of the films that we screen We kind of see ourselves as kind of like were You know the minor league baseball circuit interactive like. Yeah people get a chance to test out their homes and ideally. Hopefully they get kind of brought up to the majors and so sometimes what. Indy might become a major later on typically. Yeah most of the films that we screen have Certainly Low budget compared to what most films that we see in the megaplex You know are made four And then also a lot of. It's about personal vision. You know all these films are made by filmmakers artists. Usually they're kinda representative of you know directors vision or directing team or producers And so You know we always kind of think with our home planet and ssd hall is that You might not love everything you see but you'll find everything interesting because they're coming from such kind of unique points of view. I've i've seen things at the indie fest that go on to become really famous. Could you mentioned a couple of those Yeah so Basing here at the moment but We actually screen tearing normal activity Many years ago in that went on to Big things and then They're moving Which is kind of now a cult. Classic with bruce campbell that we screen and we string some movies. You know by gus. Van sant Such and You know that each year. There's usually kind of like one or two stand outs. That tend to go on the kind of awards worthy of films later in the year. But i think the thing that we can show is like Often these are the when we screen our films a livable planet or is this might be the one opportunity to have a chance to screen in san francisco you know. Look they go on for more. But you'll really about kind of you know kind of movies with a little bit of a weird vibe until like you know while we're environmental film festival is little point. We have like a midnight movie and so like one the films they have is called slacks. And that's our midnight movie and it's about a killer pair of pants and it's just outrageous what you might expect a film about killer pants but the reason why we program did is kind of the underlying theme of the film is about kind of consumer is. I'm in kind of like The fasten fashion industry without functions. And so there's kind of an underlying. I like the horror. Tadic killer pants. I love that killer get flat. Yeah.

Breland Talks Country, Hip Hop And Protests
"The music video for the hit song. My truck starts off like mini country music videos, country star Sam honey with a wide brimmed hat walks through a cloud of dust. Yoke and drank my leg. Come you. Can Take Mama and Yuka small. Schools these horns you can say you hate me you. Down to my truck. Then a young black man appears wire brimmed glasses and a huge grand shoves him out of the frame. Out. At the start of this year, he was just a recent college graduate trying to break into music then truck up and the song hit number one on spotify viral fifty chart back in February. The music video now has over twenty four million views and counting religious music defies definition. He's country trap hip hop aren be and so much more, and he joins us now from his home in Nashville to reflect on his music and his life as part of our series on how artists are reimagining and reflecting the current moment in their work. Thanks so much for being here. Thank you for having such a glowing introduction to bring you with me everywhere now. Oh Yeah I'll do it. So you're a recent college Grad, writing songs trying to break down the doors of the music business, and then all of a sudden you're going viral with this country song what what was it that actually got you to try your hand at Country Music Just. Always trying to do things that I think can can push the boundaries. I don't like to feel stagnant. So this was kind of came about kind of a challenge show in the studio with with some friends of mine, and we were kind of talking about the new wave of. Country Crossover records that had been that have been coming out like Old Town road and I was just like I feel like I can make a song like that and it would be pretty dope and they were like Nah man you can't make like that and I was like, okay challenge accepted so. Just started. Working on it and was able to come up with something. I guess that that stuck with people you've mentioned other artists like a little gnaws, of course, with Old Town road We also know though about the massive debate over what country is and who country belongs to. What is country to? country to me is a genre of music that is really just defined by strong songwriting and storytelling I think anyone can can make it. I think anyone can you know their based country music stars who are from? Other countries you know between. Fine and have been there some others, and then it really just comes down to the music and then whether or not people accept you I want to deepen that a little bit though because the New York Times reports that my truck isn't really picking up steam on traditional country music stations which are known to be pretty conservative. Do you even about that? I mean it would be it would be nice to have gotten more country radio support I. Think like Sirius Xm, the highways played it a lot. But in terms of traditional country radio, I don't think we got any spends I was hoping when I put Sam Hi on the remixed that would have probably validated it a little bit but it wasn't quite enough and I I understand it though because if you listen to country radio, it's. Tends to be wide dudes over forty so. For me to be a twenty five year old black dude. I, have a song, eight hundred weights and like hip hop production on it like it would've been a lot different than what was currently being played.
