Long-term Unemployment Remains High Despite American Jobs Returning

"Reopen and vaccinations speed up. But there are millions of people who lost their jobs at the beginning of the pandemic and who are still unemployed. NPR's Sam Greenglass reports asked Bud Johnson what he liked about his job driving a transit bus at the University of Delaware, and he uses a single word. Everything. The sights are great. The people I work for the great and it's just a pleasant atmosphere. But he hasn't had that in almost a year. Now. You got laid off from classes, but virtual, I eat two meals a day instead of three. I do go to the pre pantry truth from them. Johnson hasn't been called back yet or been told when, or If that will happen. I am looking forward to coming back. It was a great job in January 4 million people had been unemployed for six months or more. It's what economists call long term unemployment. And we haven't seen levels this high since the great recession that worries economists. Bill Sprigs, he says. Many employers stigmatize people who haven't worked in months. The longer someone's without a job, the harder it is to find a new one. So rather than the typical way you think of a line working you show up at the movie theater. I'm first in line. I've been here I'm next. It works in the opposite. The people who are newly unemployed get the first in line and what's worse, this will likely hit vulnerable workers even harder. Women and people of color have lost the most jobs during the pandemic. They already tend to be paid class and so long term unemployment can scar their earnings permanently. Ah McKenzie study predicted It could also take two years longer for them to recover those jobs. Here's co author Quay Lin Island group, the progress we see on closing the gender gap, even take of it out of the picture. Is so slow. And so then you pause that slow glacial progress and you make negative progress. It was deeply discouraging. There's another worry too. What if certain jobs don't ever come back? How people work and live has been changing dramatically during the pandemic, and that shaken up all kinds of jobs. One of the biggest shifts has been more people working from home. That's had ripple effects for Gloria Espinosa into last April. She cleaned offices in San Francisco. Superbly store. We got a visit from our supervisor, He gathered us all on the parking lot, and he talked to us and tell us that we were gonna be laid off. I was wondering God, why us? It was like receiving a bucket of cold water. That's the way I felt a year later, the employees whose work spaces she wants clean, are still remote. And so Espinosa is still unemployed. She knows there's no guarantee, but she feels confident she will be called back to her old job when offices reopened, be instructed bombs, a necessity to move Chapman on the whole. I think that actually is going to be probably the need of additional workers because we're gonna have to make sure that we can provide that. Extra clean a space that the workers deserve. On the other end of California, Carrie Belisle wonders what her work will look like in the future. She's been a tour guide for 35 years. We are in love, Toya. Has my Minnesota group like he's traveled. Grinding to a halt last spring, Belisle has tried to keep busy, even organizing virtual tours Join me Tuesday at two for my virtual presentation about counselor Deck finally began a new full time job. What's good here at a vaccine? Put it in San Diego. It's just nice to To chat with people and especially people that are getting vaccinated because they're all so happy and excited. While knows this new job won't be permanent, she's hopeful tour Busses will start rolling again. And she can go back to work in the field She's loved for so many years. Sam bring Glass NPR news.

We would argue. However, the fact that Sam felt so uncharitably toward his father Meeks, his despair in this moment all the more impactful because it's not just SAM's bias or love speaking. It is his moral, compass his absolute sense of right and wrong. This was an evil thing. And SAM's response shows that it also shows the pool of family, no matter how dark things get Sam runs out. And also a testament to the bond that salmon John built he trust you more than anyone brand says, and that's true. Sam is always been the one to help John cope and process, a new and often painful truth, nothing, of course, compares to this which in the most fitting fashion Sam shares in the winter folk Crips of bashing of stark them and family identity thing of John tilling willa finger you don't belong down in the books. John used to dream of the crypts where the old kings of winter would whisper to him that he wasn't a stark. And then he didn't belong these clues to John's parentage have been ever present at our tail, but John does belong REM Sansa believe it in John can keep believing it to and we find John beautifully fittingly in front of nets tomb where he's lighting candles. Remember the exchange that took place between signs on RNC's and seven. Seven in front of that very statue. It was the lamented the poor likeness of their father and signs and noted that everyone in new dad's face was dead were not aria said, and they still aren't neither John neither is brand. And no matter what John and the wider Rome learned they'll remain a family as long as they remained committed to doing. So as John told theon net is a part of him. Still no matter what that's true for John too and forever that is part of the stories lessons his essence hovering over every moment. Just as statue hovers over the scene Ned told John that he may not have his name, but he has his blood, and that's true way on stark blood. But even if it weren't true John would be stark because winter fell is his home in these people are strength so often in recent seasons, we've heard others or John himself compare onto net. She executed my father and brother, he says they were her prisoner. She didn't tell you recall what she did tell him when she returned to dragon soon. I have fewer enemies today that I did yesterday must be chilling for John realized that SAM's father and brother were among those Danny so coolly referenced in that fashion. He looks disturbed as he gives Sam his sympathy. But also says that they have to win the war and winning. The war means aligning with Danny Sam asks if John would have done it and John says truly that he has executed men who disobeyed it. Yes. But he seems tortured as he saying it and Sam notes that John also spared men and acted mercy. Civilly John brought the wild south of the wall at the cost of eventually of his own life. "Uh i i was not expecting this and i'm very happy that it it turned out in the waited and this episode contains maybe one of my favorite deliveries of a line i've ever heard were diane they're talking about like sam has been going on all these dates of all these women anti answer suddenly relic odd endless sex the adult male equivalent of the candy store but after all the sect's you could possibly want what would you do then and norm says i'd help the poor and he says it in such a to help the poor like you though that way it's one of the funniest moments type because it's such a good like it helps support is just such a good delivery of that line it is really get so sam brings in a dating debra and they're talking about the symphony and uh i think it's beethoven or mozarts are so amazing it's incredible but they leave the programme behind and diane checks organ while this programs to years old are the whole thing was a ruse to try to convince diane that sam does they intelligent women it's a pretty ridiculous premise one because it's ridiculous but you because it also would demonstrate to diane like hey sam apparently super duper cares what you think about him yeah enough that he went to a lot of trouble to try to make you think even though you could say like no he just wanted to convince her she was wrong but once again that don't really cares about a event we find out then that uh debra is his ex wife somehow it's a fighter you know it's just blew if you could see travis raking his fingers through his hair each it was it her mind brain as a person who has watched a lot of tv in their life.
