"We thank her very much. And again, another person absolutely worthy of being on our currency, right? Okay, at the top of this episode, I mentioned that there was something that bothered me about. This endeavor of having these wonderful famous women, the American currency. And I'm glad they're on the currency, them being on the currency is not the problem. That is not my bone of contention. The other side of these quarters will feature president George Washington. Why? Just tell me why. Me? Tell me why. I have an opinion. Now, why do many non natives feel we need oversight or mentoring? What's the matter with them? They just, they can't help themselves. You know, why even bother to put him on the quarter? Just because he's always been on the quarter? Well, hockey. That's right, say, ball hockey. Now do it here. They would say something like, well, you know, if we're going to change the image on one side of the coin and, you know, we have to, we have to get a new plates and new stamps. That kind of stuff. Yeah. Well, the Secretary of the Treasury consulted with the Smithsonian institutions, American women's history initiative, as well as consulting with the national women's history museum and the congressional bipartisan women's caucus to select the women. But, you know, there's no reason for George Washington to be on the coin period. You know, to me, it diminishes somewhat the importance of those fine, important women being on the quarter. It just dubbed it to me in my eyes. Some people might say, well, what's the big deal to me? It's a big deal. Now, this year, the program itself, the coin redesign act of 2020 is featuring 5 where the women, including a poet, Maya Angelou, and astronaut Sally Ride. So, you know, I'm glad these famous important women are winding up our currency and getting the recognition they sold deservedly should have. But why diminish their accomplishments. If you're going to honor them that way, why diminish it by patriarchy. Because that's what that's what it amounts to. It amounts to patriarchy. So, you know, throw stones right nasty notes, whatever you need to do. But, you know, why diminish their spotlight? By putting some dead guy that, you know, didn't really do anything for the country except. Steel steel teeth from his slaves. And do other things. So there you go. Thank you, ladies for your accomplishments. Indeed, thank you. Go ahead, I'm sorry. No, I'm sorry. Well, I was just going to say, you know, there's two ways to look at this, of course. You know, one is it's about time, right? And so getting the recognition that they so justly deserve it is a good thing. And as Dave already pointed out, you know, but it's also a matter of. Understanding. The history of this country. And so, unlike our indigenous communities, for example, we're by and large many of our societies are make your article. Or the women lead, and these ladies all exemplary and show leadership in each of their own ways, right? European countries are a flip of that. And so when you have a country that was founded the way it was and I really honestly refused to have debates with people unless they want to lose to me. On this, but the bottom line is, you know, it was built on deceit theft and superiority murder pushed by men, white men, okay? And so, you know, and for many years before women's rights were elevated in this country for all women. The men were domineering. And so that, you know, that results in things like, yes, people like George Washington on one side of a coin. You know? And all the paper currencies here. Same thing. It's always white males. That the country elevated because of status. And because of capitalism. So, you know, I think that that's the proper context to be putting this in. Now, we could sit there and have a nuanced discussion about, okay, well, you know, how do you balance the quarters out and who would you put on there? Well, I think that's something worth having further discussion about. But I would prefer that the conversation not be one of lies that say, you know, or half truths, which would be like the example I gave, which is, well, we got to retool everything. You got to retool everything anyway for the backside of the coin. And some of the argument also that we could make relevant to people of color in this country where we're some people were not allowed to sit on the front of the bus, okay? We could look at that the same kind of argument relevant to the coins. So, you know, these are the things I tend to think about sometimes, you know, and trying to put things in context. It's not to weaken or weaken the acknowledgment and the effort going into not only choosing fine, fine candidates for, you know, to appear. But it also, to me, feels a little bit unfinished. In that regard. So I guess I'll leave it there, but yeah, that's where I'm at with everything..

"I. I guess i've got to be like the one who says out loud what everyone is thinking. I mean you look at jeff visas rocket. You're is that a rocket in your backyard or you. Happy go to space jeff. I mean for for all the people who were talking about The these these billionaires having a well male measuring contest. I think he measured up fairly well with his rocket. Ship and then he shot it into space and got higher than Than brands speaking of getting high you on the same day. That jeopardy's goes to the space. Amazon comes out in favour marijuana legalization. I wonder if that was a coincidence. But it's fascinating to watch. I watched jeff bezos rocket into space. And then i saw the ridiculous commentary. Let let me let me give you an example of some of the commentary. Scott galloway is a progressive professor at nyu. Richard branson a couple of years to to really get to that. Point scott spacex already has more of a relationship with nasa toe so to your point on the of scientific exploration being one of the more viable paths for blue origin. Here how does bays trying to close that gap where he's playing catch out. There's no doubt about it. Three billion in contracts have already gone to space accidentally about half a billion of blue origin. But my friend. Brad really summarized perfectly space tourism is virgin wants to put four hundred flights. Four people eats at sixteen hundred. They say they want to do it. Four thousand bucks a piece. That's sixty four million dollars on a company valued at six billion. That just doesn't make any sense. In addition five hundred and fifty people have gone into space eleven have not returned which means space travel has a higher mortality rates. Ten times mortality rate of climbing everest or base jumping so space space tourism makes absolutely no sense and just for a moment. i wanna be nostalgic. You know fifty years ago when we accomplished what we accomplished. Today i would argue even even greater accomplishments. We sent the daughter of a minister who received her phd in physics from stanford. That was sally ride. We found a woman who was born in alabama who got a masters in chemical engineering and then went on to be a doctor and serving the peace corps that was made jemison. I'm nostalgic for the days of sallie mae. Not when we send out the sons of private equity billionaires in the world's wealthiest man. I think this something a little weird and quite frankly little unhealthy about our society. Some of you may be thinking that as well some of you may be thinking. This is kind of a race for billionaires. Why are they spending their money at home by the way a california congressman is already out with a proposal to tax space tourism california democratic congressman proving. California democratic congressman. That's what they do. My goodness gracious. Well let me put this in perspective for you. Jeff bezos and richard branson elon. Musk have done. Somethin' privately with their money that no government on planet earth has been.

We go and cap trust for some business news on a Friday morning. Good morning, Kelly. Same good morning to you. This update brought to us by the von Hausen Mercedes Benz Automotive Group. We're taking a look today at a number of things. First of all, we'll kind of I was watching What happened with Coca Cola the last few days. I don't know if you saw this, but Christiano Ronaldo, who was one of the great soccer players in the world, sat down after one of the the matches and, uh he moved the Coke out of the way Coke is, um Is one of the major sponsors of this huge euro tournament, and he moved out of the way and just said water, just water. And and, uh, he is known to not be a fan of soft drinks, especially sugary soft drinks anyway. Coke's stock in the succeeding two days Lost about $5 billion market cap. And now who knows if that was market forces doing that, or if that was Mr Ronaldo's opinion about Coca Cola coming? Firing through, but obviously he is well watched in that part of the world, and he made it pretty clear soft drinks. Not for me to stick to water. You know, he always tops the list of influencers like when you look at, uh, on any platform, I found that interesting. He tops the list of influencers. So maybe he did have something to do with it, But I mean, you know he doesn't drink alcohol. He's made it clear to keep him himself and he just does not drink alcohol or soft drinks, And that's the way it is with him and That someone put a Coca Cola ball right in front of him, and he moved it out of the way Disdainfully, you might say, What else do we have going on today? The market looking at its worst week since January Mainly with all this talk about rising interest rates as a matter of fact, today, one Fed officials saying, I know we said 2023, he said. I think our first rate increase will be very late in 2022. So that's getting closer and that will impact evaluation of stocks. Um and and and it's already impacting the valuation of stocks. But of course, we were very close to all time highs as well. Out down. 3 66 33 4 56 NASDAQ Down 95 the S and P down 41 points or just about 1% gold flat oil up slightly 10 Year bond Yield. 1.50 Kelly, Thank you so much. Here's Kitty O'Neil. I'm starting with this year 1923, and that's when I take the checkered taxi put its first taxi on the street in Chicago. Okay, not being replaced by lifting uber uber and lift. I think it's really interesting. How uber and lift convinced all of us to become taxis, right? Yeah, no great business model. It is. Yeah, we're the next year I have year 1983. Want to go back to 6 50 this morning when we do our those were the days segment. Look at things that happened on this date in history. Some celebrity birthdays, etcetera. Today is the birth date of Les Paul, guitarist extraordinaire. Grammy Award winning guitarist Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Now when we introduced Les Paul's birthday today earlier this morning, if you are here, you heard Steve Miller doing fly like an eagle, and you may have wondered at the time what that was all about. The sun concerns of inflation and states continue to say thanks, but no thanks to the federal government's $300 weekly supplement to unemployment benefits, Mississippi and Iowa now joining the list of state sending those benefits. Other states opting out include Alabama, Arkansas, South Carolina and Montana. New York's Broadway is preparing to reopen in September after more than a year of darkened stage is joining us with more is Washington Post Theater critic Peter Marks. Thanks for joining us today, Peter There's your killer. So for sports and smaller music venues. We're seeing a gradual return for crowds with only a portion of seats sold. Is it going to be a slow re opening for Broadway? No, actually, it's it's going from. As I wrote today, 0 to 100 100% capacity coming back as and that's because these giants years of Broadway that seat between 2000 and 2000, people can't make the production's can't make money unless they are not socially. Just you were elbow to elbow again in the theaters. And as far as audience requirements, are they going to have to be vaccinated? If we're all supposed to be elbow to elbow? That's a great question, and it's it seems to take. It's a you know, it's an evolving set of rules. We're not clear on on any sense of what the protocols are gonna be in mid September when Hamilton Wicked and the Lion King Open up the first shows to come back. On Broadway. So your guess is as good night, Taylor. What hex, these producers and theater owners They're going to require of us to get people their families back in those seats. You know, actor friends I have here in Seattle and, and at least one of my friends who tried to make a go of it in New York have actually had to make some career changes through the pandemic and get a desk job. Are the actors, musicians? Stagehands? Are they gonna be there for the full re opening or is there gonna be a Ah, lack of workers in that labor force. You know, this is a really sensitive and important question you're asking, And I know of people who have you know long careers, even in management on Broadway of House managers in general managers who retired, you know it's gonna be a total of about 18 months. Of idleness from start to finish in a lot of people said as you as you're discovering they give up because it's just such an unstable business to begin with. So there is going to be some attrition. Hopefully, it's such an attractive feel that it will bring in a whole new generation of people, especially maybe people who didn't have opportunities before. Like artists of color and people who trade generally we're not, uh, given the first chance at jobs. Cities like Seattle are often used for like a like a testing ground before show goes to Broadway, But our stages are still very much dark as far as new productions hitting Broadway when it reopens. Are there going to be any euro? Is it just gonna be the hits like Lion King and Wicked? You're acting all the good theater questions, Kayla because I was trying to be active, younger days. Yeah, it's it really Is the really up in the air issue. There are gonna be some new plays planned for later. Down the road. A couple of new musicals are also in the works. But by and large the first things that are gonna rip up our all those war horses that shows that people recognize his brands broadly brands. I think the expectation or the hope is that that will be the first drawing card, which also means there's gonna be a need for tourists to arrive. "She only basically gave permission to publicly talked about a doctor or shaughnessy as her partner well into her battle with cancer at a birthday party so she was very private about it. That's partially due to her being kind of a private person but that's also partially because nasa culture at the time was kind of a bro culture in interview. Sally ride talks about getting like really weird questions from engineers about like makeup and like period products hygiene products that you need to take with her End like argument of why women shouldn't go into spaces because their menstrual periods would go crazy or something right. Yeah there was a little bit. Yeah so she was dealing with a brief breaking a barrier for women like outing herself in a in a intensely Masculine intensely hetero normative formerly military test pilot. Culture was something that wasn't quite in the cards for her especially given her upbringing as fairly quiet. And not you know outgoing in that way and her relationship with Dr shaughnessy to it. Was you know they were partners. But also they were also partners in like an education program they. I think they ran together. Young girls especially. And i think actually company called sally ride science. That sounds like a porno well. I mean it's really non reported graphic children science education company. That's part of the reason also too why they remained in the closet As well as because they you know they were dealing with kids and they knew that they would probably come up against some very conservative people and for them that would that would become an issue for them when really all they want to do is educate young people about science. And strana me. Yeah at astronomy. Dr a shaughnessy actually is education psychologist specialist to so her entire career revolves around in leising studying at optimizing how to teach children. So it's already starting at once. Sally had passed on and tam shaughnessy retired. It was actually. It was in her obituary rosenheim yet in her obituary. She gave permission to have this done but in her bitchy wary. Her telluride sister actually talked about how sally ride was in this relationship with dr. Shaughnessy the doctor shaughnessy talked about in interviews later. They asked her Do you cry when you're malfunctioning predict. She she was just like now she was just she was very like i tell you. A lot of people were crying when the challenger disaster exploded and she was a the person responsible for discovering wide exploded in the first place. Right yes sally Dr reid actually was able to suss out that the Over rain caused the failure She had a good enough relationship with all the engineers involved that she could like..

"But Yeah, as you guys probably know. I mean, Elvis really could have been a great actor. I think if you watch those first few Oh, yeah. Um You know, King Creole Jailhouse rock loving you. He had he had the screen loved him. Oh, my God. It's so beautiful, right? And then he went to the Army. And when he got out, the colonel had like a big movie deal. Forum based were interchangeable. Basically, it's like, Hey, you're the handsome guy I and you're gonna get sick and win a girl. Great, and you're gonna be one syllable and you're not gonna accept any family money and you're gonna get in at least two brawls. And you gotta sing five songs. They became very formula me. But the one the one that was supposed to happen was born frustration. Yeah, it So the whole thing the whole thing. And, of course you know the jailhouse rock in that movie. He has Well, First of all, he sings, You're so square, baby. I don't care. And then the memorable line after kisses rebuffed as cheap tactics, Elvis's It ain't tactics, Honey. It's just the beast and me, but he delivers it and you're not laughing. It's like feels right. He said. He was good. So in the end those terrible sixties movies the only reason that they're watchable because of his talent, you know he looks good. He's saying what they dance parties because I don't give a shout out for Viva Las Vegas. I will stick my that That movie is fun, fun, fun and girl Happy Girl. Happy is really a fun one because it's like a goofy Pastel Beach party, and it's fun to see the swinging sixties fashion. And Elvis is always wearing velour shirts and everybody's Elson bathing suits. But other than that, and then change a habit is a good one, even though it's preposterous premise, But he and Mary Tyler Moore had some great They had great chemistry. Yes, Even Where's the sweatshirt and tennis shoes in that movie? That was his last movie. What You want to know what kind Jack Purcell? Everyone are. Everyone were the Jack Purcell and Ed Asner plays the understanding cop in a change of habit and has the salt doesn't have that were a little less conversation comes from. Yes, I love it. One last thing I'll say about Elvis movies. If you're looking at the two concert movies that they made in the Early seventies, Elvis on tour and Elvis. That's the way it is really, really good. I mean, it kind of captured. I mean, we all like to make fun of the fat seventies. No, we don't like to make fun of them. No record. You need to know that we don't That was sure left his heavy here never made you haven't but like I think it's you know, Elvis. The fat Elvis is kind of a punching bag. No, that is rooted. Know what? Speaking on my being? I know, but I mean do what is it? Last time anyone made a fat Elvis joke to you or you, are you? I just think it's terrible. Well, my point is okay. If you watch these films you Elvis really had it these air from like 69 70 when he was kind of still in between the 68 comeback special and he was sort of He was only fat for the last two years of his life. He really was everyone. Do you know that he was really good to see this? Yes. We can go. Yeah, I've read. I've read a handful of books. I mean, he he messed up his metabolism because he needed you know uppers to get up and that was to go to bed at night and And it just caught up with him because he would always eat like a, you know, Madman indeed. Hamburgers and peanut butter, bacon sandwiches and you know when you're used to that, I think, too, was one of the reasons I think in the back of my mind about even though it would have given him so much purpose in a way to get back in shape. About a star is more born. Is that he? You would had to have lost weight. What last? Wait and you know he was I don't think he was proud of his movie career. You know what I mean? I always heard that night that he was so well because he wanted more. You know, it was just like I look out bad Prince wanted wanted it, you know, and So maybe you don't like me. Jaeger's wanted to act, You know, I mean, it doesn't people don't always There's not a lot of people who really get to end up being the triple threat where they are good at They're good at like, you know, two superstar job, um You take over learn. All right, Well, I just I'm with you, Rocco. If you've got, you know, watch some Elvis. You know, there's so much great stuff out there. And if you have TCM, it's Elvis movies all weekend. Tonight. The David Bowie tribute show eyes on at rolling lives studios dot com. I think that's $25 different people playing Bowie and then tomorrow night. Put phone is doing a Robin digital dance party and drag show And of course, you know, dancing on my own and Oliver other great songs, and you just go to Facebook. You know, Flip phone? They're going to have it be every Sunday like he would have done normally at the turf Club on Sunday night in January, because, you know, because sometimes on Sunday wants something to do that was like the current Jorgensen used to do. Um, the baby path? Yes. Sunday Sunday in January 5 nights total. Yeah. Charlie Par First Avenue.
