The History of Neighborhood Witches in America

"Superstition was common in the late. Sixteen hundreds if something odd or unexplainable happened the automatic response from most people was to blame the supernatural but most scholars agree that these beliefs were merely excuses to help people deal with neighbors and family members that they didn't care for if you didn't like somebody. It was common to accuse them of witchcraft. In the most famous historical example of this the witch trials of salem massachusetts. We can see a clear pattern in the events. Many of those accused of being witches were wealthy and held religious beliefs. That were different from their accusers. Wants a subject was convicted. Their estate would be confiscated by the court and in a community that was known for property disputes grazing rights and religious arguments. That became a recipe for disaster. And what happened in salem happened. Elsewhere around new england just on a smaller scale neighbors accused neighbors constantly. Stories were told. Lives were ruined. It was the way of things. I suppose not ideal but also not uncommon in one story from exeter rhode island. A farmer was said to have been carting his lumber to market when a cat ran across the road for some unknown reason. This farmer immediately jumped to the conclusion. The cat was actually a neighbor of his. A woman who he insisted was a witch she had of course transformed herself into the cats in order to meddle in his business. This farmer though was fast on his feet not only did he see the cat running and then make the connection to his witchy neighbor but he then managed to pull out his gun. He was said to a fired. A silver bullet at the katz. Something well known at the time to be effective against witches and struck his target at that very moment according to the story be suspected which fell in her own. Home breaking her hip. In the town of salem new hampshire a man decided that his cow looked strangely different from how he remembered and he made the most logical conclusion he was. capable of. His neighbor was a sorcerer and the man had bewitched his cow folklore dictated the solution to he cut off the cows ears and tail and then burned them soon. After the farmers neighbor was found dead victim of a house

"To their heirs. Cho's that siral equivalent to all the lives lost right in July of twenty seventeen, the city of Salem Massachusetts Open Memorial for the people that were convicted and killed during the Salem witch trials. The memorial consists of semi circular area enclosed by a wall, which contains the names of the people that were hanged in the location as well as a single oak tree at the center The tree is said to be a quote symbol of endurance and dignity. The memorial was funded by dozens of small donations many from descendants of those killed that site in addition to a one hundred seventy four, thousand dollar community. Preservation Act Grant. As with anything that doesn't quite make sense to us in the here, and now there are some theories as to what exactly caused the events of the Salem witch trials to take place yeah. One theory contends that it could have been a sort of post traumatic stress in some of the girls perhaps having witnessed some of the atrocities of King Philip's. which took place nearby in the sixteen seventy s coupled with the culture of fear that was generated by the continued threat. Another theory is that young people were rebelling against the Puritan Authority as the first accusers were quite young and many of the accused were older. Related to that the feminist thought is that the trials were away to put women who acted against social norms back in place for sure. Yet, another theory is that in the midst of dangerously cold weather in this four, hundred year period when witchcraft scares were most prevalent in Europe and North America falling in a little ice age. With lower than average temperatures, crops were more likely to fail colder, seas would prevent cod and other fish from migrating far enough north, thus eliminating vital food sources and leading people to search for a supernatural scapegoat right. So they believed that which were cursing the lands and keeping them from being able to eat. Yeah. It is also theorized that mass hysteria as a result of the stress of living in such a rigid society near a dangerous wilderness frontier manifested into physical symptoms. which may genuinely be the cause. Mass hysteria is defined as the rapid spread of conversion disorder a condition involving the appearance of bodily complaints for which there is no organic basis. And such episodes..

"Today thank you so much no Pam how's business in Salem it is fabulous having a good year great year do you have enough homes for sale there because I know in many areas of the northeast inventory is quite low our way way down yet bidding wars and you know think selling in less than a day is that right so a very hot market in the north shore of Boston very hot so Pam do people really moved to Salem because of its the witching past it's actually huge and people do move here because of it we have a large working population which believe it or not is a real religion people don't realize you're kidding no no when we have a lot of stores and and things that cater to that population here so it is a big draw is that right so a typical home buyer comes to your office and says I'd like to see what's available in our price range in Salem Massachusetts how does that conversation go does the witch thing actually come up during your talk with them it comes up a little bit to be honest with you but most of our history is based on maritime and you know our eighteenth century architecture I see so tell us a little bit about that what what I find if I was looking for a home in Salem and if I was looking for some of the local attractions well homes and salmon can range anywhere from things that were built at sixteen hundred wow to you know converted loft in downtown two more residential neighborhoods with split level homes I see and you mentioned it's maritime past I imagine you have a flinty interesting seaport area it's absolutely stunning in fact I don't know if you realize Salem was supposed to be the capital of Massachusetts is right it is but fortunately our harbor was a deep enough I see so as we mention Pam hollowing is on Thursday when you see a lot of visitors to Salem because of its past involving the witch trials your there are tour buses throughout the month of October but Halloween day we can easily double our population if not more is that right just for the one day so Pam do you like working in a town with a hollow means seem to it for the most part yes because you have to realize people come from all over the world is it here trust for that no I understand your husband owns a retail shop in downtown Salem cold the barking tapped all about he does sell cat and dog products I see so it's a pet supply store it is so it has nothing to do with Halloween or which is or black cats in now although that is mandatory in Salem by the way is really yeah you have that black cat well you know it sounds to me like you're having an awful lot of fun not only living in Salem but also doing real estate up there it's a blast we'll Pam I really appreciate you joining us from Salem Massachusetts the site of the witch trials three hundred plus years ago Pam thanks for joining us today thank you so much happy Halloween you too McKee realtor with the Keller Williams PAM a key theme in Salem Massachusetts.

"Is your developer origin story. Sorry you know is I started using computers in the ancient times I was eleven years old and this is back in the eighties very new thing now you had your choice you could sit through the thirty minute lecture where they talk to you about programming and then spend the next our either playing video games or writing code and I chose Writing Code because this was a really quite cool interesting thing to put this into perspective of time. Period is probably nineteen eighty two eighty three. We're talking pre MAC or as we used to call a Macintosh pre Macintosh computers apple twos and TRS eighty s stuff. I just I couldn't get enough of it. And of course we had no internet so learning was all. I'm just trying to figure stuff out talking to few people that I knew that knew it. I was still a pre teen or early team at this point and and getting any books that I could would find and of course you could go and find some cast aside book on C. Plus Plus but then you take that back to your commodore sixty like wait a minute. How do I can't just start writing c. Plus plus all basic so eventually I found my way to actually getting taking some classes and then than in highschool learn turbo pass cow. How and that was a lot of fun but by the time I was in college they were doing things like Pascal was kind of fading away they were doing things with modulation and I was actually actually a computer science major for like a whole semester before I changed it to something else because the computer science stuff back in those days and we're talking about the early nineties it was really people weren't doing interesting cool stuff outside of the field of science and math and there's a lot of very cool stuff in science and math you could do with computers computers but that's not what I wanted to do at end of the world and do it in the fact that I knew computers but he knows how to use the computer at the very least and software for development like you. There's so many great ways to learn how to write code. You can take a course online you can take course anywhere and there's so much so many ways to learn but back then then there really wasn't and so when I got out of college immediately I interviewed for a job doing development stuff and and ever since then that's what I've been doing. I spent many years doing njit stuff and and that's what I'm talking about everything from you know crawling under a desk to plug in a mouse all the way to you know building building out data centers for for big companies so I've done all of that managed teams doing that software development work my way up finally to be a CTO of a company and I've done my own business and consulting company for many many years so I've I've dabbled in a everything and what I kind of always frustrated me and also gave me a bit of an advantage was that I'm very much a generalist. I I knew people that were sober specialized and they were so much better than me whether it was better in writing code or better than me doing database stuff or building out infrastructure. Everyone was always better but I knew a little bit about everything and so that works really well. If you want to run your own business or start your own business because you have to do everything if you're running your own business but it always it was really hard hard for me because I never fit into that exact mold of like well. We need like a Java developer. Who's really good at unit tests okay well. That was certainly not me but I can rake really good Java if I wanted to you know so I it was always a struggle and I think doing web development and especially rails for me that was it was such a the joy and ruby on rails but ruby in general was really the first language that I had learned and I I've programmed in so many different languages over the years review. He was the first one that actually brought me joy when I was using it where I never felt like I was fighting against the language or I guess the I gotTa do it this swing sense the way they want me to do it. I never really felt that sure there's some of that in rails but for the most part it was very freeing kind of liberating experience and I have to thank my friend who I'm not sure if you've interviewed him or not he should his name is Damon Clink Scales and I he's he's very well known here here in the Austin Development Community and this is back before rails one dot came out and he said Dad. I know you like Doing Java on the back end. PHP HP on the front end but there's this new thing the are gonna like it's called Ruby on rails and I said that's not my favorite name in the world and he said it doesn't matter you're you're going to like it. You should try it. We should do our next project in it and so I picked it up and I loved it and the rest is history. There's there's so much to unpack their first of all. I have a very similar education history as you also did. Pascal in high school awesome I was told hold back in high school that there were too many people in computer science and they didn't need anyone else which is so hysterical because say can't get enough of that is all we need. Also I love the fact that you picked up on rails to do a project where you needed to deliver something and so you needed something to ship but also the fact back that you noted that you tend to know a little bit of everything but the thing about ruby on rails. If you know a little bit of rails that can take you so far. This is so easy eighty us it really is. I mean the there's so much in rails. I mean I remember the first rails confident I wound up getting to go to and and it wasn't that long after I'd started learning it and it there was a buzz there but it was still really small if you know if memory serves I think it was in Chicago. Oh and I think all I didn't even get to see Chicago like I went right from the airport right to the right to the little thing is is like in a hotel I mean it was so small and like the people giving talks where like three feet away from you on like a mock stage that had been set up but it was like like David was just David Hammer hands just use his walking around like approachable you could just sit next to him and talk to them in a thing and toby from shop a fire there and I got to meet all lease amazing developers and it was just so cool and we knew but you knew you got a sense like this is different like something cool is happening here and then the second rails. House conference of course it was a little bit bigger and then each year they got bigger and bigger and I think I spoke three of them in the old times but what a great crowd and in and it was also really cool because most of the rails developers had Max which was really different from the other developer conferences I went to and it just there was a vibe and it was really cool. That is so cool and it's something that you got to see re Ruby on rails in its infancy and just all the excitement that must have been around it and just understanding thing that while the framework didn't have a lot of features to it. They're just probably was a confidence across the community that those features were. GonNa Exist at some point whenever whenever ever I look at those charts that get hub and other places come out with it'll show like the trending languages and the cool languages in every and you see python going up up up up up up and you know ruby on rails is kind of just kind of there on you know everything else that came after it owes so much to ruby on rails because we just just there just wasn't the idea of a scaffold was like what it's GonNa. It's GonNa make the model. It's going to do the database migration. It's GonNa make view Anna Controller and tests and like all it just doing that for you like that was absolutely mind. Boggling back then so you tease me about best but I have to ask. Can you tell me the story of how you made the first ruby on rails. CMS Yes and I'm I'm sure there's somebody out there. Who's going to say no. No I had the first one but but I'll I'll say this. This was the first one that that I knew about and it was also the first one that was on the main page of Ruby on rails dot org when it came out a very very good friend of Mine Jeffrey Zelda men who is an amazing web developer for for many many many years and has been super helpful in in me me with me getting started in my career. One of the things they were struggling with was that they had had a custom cms built at that just it wasn't it wasn't living living up to what they needed from it. There are things they wanted to do. There was a new design. They wanted to roll out. There was a lot happening behind the scenes that they just they couldn't do with the existing system because the guy who wrote it became like a dot com millionaire. DidN'T WANNA waste time within anymore so I said I will build a new one and I'll build it in this crazy new thing called called rails and they said whatever you want you know you're the one that's going to be babysitting it so do whatever he wants so I did and it was. It was a huge you'd. I'm sure I could find the article if I can do it. I'll send it your way because I don't even remember what year it was but it was super cool because this was one of the first I things like this was out there in the world in production being used and and so you know to my knowledge it was the first or one of the very first I CMS that was ever built and then of course right after that I started building corked which my friend Dan Cedar home who is is the founder of dribble. Are I guess I guess. You're always a founder even if you leave he's. I don't think he works there anymore. I think he sold it and he's maybe kayaking out by Salem Massachusetts now but back in those days he is just a designer and no dribble existed yet and he had the idea we were friends and we used to compare tasting notes for different wind that we would try and and he said you know he says I've. I've actually had an idea that this could be a fun sort of social website website and keep in mind. This is back before like like facebook existed but it wasn't what it is today and there was no twitter really or maybe it was super early and so wild whoa wow like a social network for wine nerds who are not snobby that sounds kind of fun and he already had a cool logo for it and so we started building that and of course that was going to be rails course so. I wrote the rails and he did the design and you know and then I remember. We said to each other if we get in the in the first week if we get five hundred users that we will consider that to be a huge success. We had thousands of users in the first first month or two. We had forty thousand users on that thing. Not all of them were daily users but like active users on that was amazing and of course at Salta Gary back later on but the long story short those were like two of the first big league rails sites out in the world and and I had a hand in them and it was very very cool thing to do and and I remember I would go to the ruby on rails dot org page and see those two little screen shots of those sites there and it was always a huge inspiration to think man. I'm I like I did something in this cool new community
