Juneteenth Holiday Observed by Growing Number of Companies

"Well regardless of who's responsible there's no doubt the Juneteenth is probably the most celebrated this year than ever before it has been widely celebrated in the African American community I'm sure that a lot of white Americans didn't even know what that was until maybe a few weeks ago but already major companies and organizations are rushing to recognize Juneteenth as a holiday for their employees in some fashion Saint Louis county moved earlier this week to make today a paid holiday for employees the city of Saint Louis will do the same starting next year it is officially a state holiday in Missouri and thirty five other states even if a lot of people may not have known that John Hancock should be a national holiday well you know it's interesting because the emancipation proclamation was issued on on January one which is already a holiday so honoring the man's patient proclamation would be difficult because it's new year's day Juneteenth it would seem to me as a as an appropriate day to honor the end of slavery slavery is the great Satan in the history of the United States of America and the day that it was indeed in people were freed I think ought to be celebrated there's a simple answer to this Congress can take action and make it a national holiday in resolved and I guarantee you that we passed in the house and stopped in the Senate because it's controlled by the

"All right I'll start with you Dow furniture can you tell me a little bit about what you guys still yes so we are a furniture retailer and west Saint Louis county and we carry quality American made products lava custom options and we have a staff of interior designers that can help people sort through all of the options to have the furniture that of their dreams yeah where are you located we are at one five four two four Manchester road in Ellisville Missouri was sent by we are across the street from the Chinooks in Baldwin were technically now still and correct way to our west is frosty's pizza okay do you guys eat there yeah we if they're pretty often let's say you put in long hours that's an easy option for you guys yeah definitely you say okay American made furniture so Sir certain trends we've seen depending on where people do they normally seek American made furniture is that like a destination a reason why people come to you yeah it is it is quite the draw in today's age there's quite a bit of imported furniture that is of a little bit lower quality than what we Kerry now we do carry some imports were about eighty percent American made we do carry a few imported products for pretty selective on those but you have the American made story is generally story of quality it's also a story of sustainability there's a lot less fuel involved in and get a product to us than something shipped from overseas and then we can do the custom options and a lead time that is reasonable generally six to eight weeks we do have some quick ship options in four weeks where if you custom order from overseas or six months plus a wow yeah with the American made furniture do you know where it's coming from other any regional furniture makers here yeah it's crazy North Carolina is where most of it comes from the upholstery least selfies and and I sectionals chairs that all comes from pretty much all that comes from North Carolina it is and then we have some case good plants what product that come from New York Vermont we have one from Missouri that can be a little bit all over but North Carolina is kind of the hub I knew a guy that did upholstery he said it's a very difficult thing to do right if you're talented and upholstery you'll have a lot of work you know what do you do at Dow furniture so I am in charge of all of our sales and marketing is generally what I do on the small business so where a lot of hats but those are my two main roles yeah your sister Karen is here as well hi Karen hi how are you good what do you do without furniture I oversee all of our customer service and our warehouse operations and again like rain we all kind of have our hands in a little bit of everything but my main day today is customer service order entry on warehouse that's beyond ordinary because he mentioned that when you walk in there are people that help you when it comes to design figured out what works for your space is so I'm guessing the customer experience is very important absolutely we feel that's one of the things that sets us apart from a big box store I you know you can come in and you can talk to one of the Dow's you can you know feel like family we treat our employees like family and our customers like family so it's very important to us that they have an exceptional experience when they walk in one of the new features about this is how long Dow furniture's been in business what year was it found it it was founded in eighteen ninety four and in October of two thousand nineteen we celebrated a hundred and twenty five years it's amazing as Sony what generation are you guys we are the fifth generation while isn't that something there's a lot to that what does that mean for you to be a fifth generation in a family business I take a lot of pride in that I was actually able to work with my grandfather a little bit and he he was already retired by the time I stepped in but he actually talked my dad into paying me more money when I first started and so it's really been enjoying my grandpa used to come in on Mondays to visit us and to work with my dad and my family and to see all the things throughout the years even before I started working there to see my dad and the passion they had for furniture and design and and the business and my grandfather until the day he died was still talking about the business thinking about the business and really caring about what you know the business was doing for our family that's great Dan being from CMake consulting fifth generation business that's pretty rare anymore it is pretty rare and the research says at least for the first three generations only one third make the generational transition and the generations of extrapolate that only one percent of all family businesses ever started would make it to the fifth generation and in this case because of Ryan in Kerr's father owns a hundred percent the stock which I happen to know they haven't said that yet we would look at this as a generation one to generation to in terms of dynamics but actually it's generation for the generation five but the actual definition and transition may be different than the transition in terms of family dynamics I'm so eighteen ninety for a hundred and twenty five years in the community where did it all start for from what I understand would be how many great grandfathers ago would that be it's a great great grandfathers if that's correct came here wasn't born in this country so Ferdinand our great great grandfather he was born in Germany and he came here with his parents in the eighteen sixties when he was fairly young and then he started the business in eighteen ninety four he was working on the the street cars here in Saint Louis is a carpenter and there was a worker strike and he had a family to feed so we started selling his own cabinets and when the strike was over he decided to keep selling cabinets instead of going back to work for the street cars the last time the streetcars worked in Saint Louis yeah pretty much well that's neat story so out of necessity and he found the opportunity to do that but you already have the skill of the wood working because he was that that was a straight he was able to work in and start the family business that way wow yeah and actually we still have one of his cabinets in the store so it's over a hundred years old that sets it in our office a pie so no one touches it but yeah we still have some of his work with us what does that mean you can look at the craftsmanship of something a hundred and fifty years ago and learned from that that that means something yeah I mean the quality story again is something we stand by that's what has made our business and it's really important to us to carry on that and these are is the first of the people live with and they like our family business days often will pass down of the family members so that quality craftsmanship is is kind of a key to what we do and the pride we taken in our business so with him he also had a son that got into the business after that with him or do you know how it went to generation tale yes so Fred his son took over or not didn't take over became into the business I'm not sure exactly what year he came into the business but he came into this I do know he paid eight dollars to buy into the business he was working for a bank and that was his and what year do you think that was we're going to an inflation calculator my I'm yeah I'm not a hundred percent sure of when that was but yeah he was in the business and ran it made it through the Great Depression and then our grandfather Robert took over the business and then our dad enter the business in nineteen seventy five okay he's young do you know why your dad got into it wasn't always that the family business was going to take the you know he was going to be able to go on that line of work as the was that always his destiny for him no not at all actually yeah he needed a job it's a it's the last three generations have a very similar story my grandpa said he wouldn't take over the business and he did and then my dad said that as well I'm similar my that we both have education degrees and neither of us became teachers we both came into the business sell my dad yeah he got his degree in education and is going to teach high school social studies and he's already can make as a social studies teacher and the amount of work that took in yeah laugh coming into the business while your grandpa was welcoming now he probably wanted all along your dad to get into it yeah I both my parents and I know that my grandpa was like this they were a little hesitant about us coming in the business because running a business is not easy work is a lot of hours there is you know sometimes stress it puts stress on your family and my grandpa saw a lot of that he I'm kinda had to be the one that told family members they couldn't be in the business because it wasn't big enough for them so I think there were some of that with my dad coming in the business he wanted to make sure that this was a decision he wanted to make to come the business but quickly after my dad came of does my grandpa did retire no I see he was ready to be done so yes there was some relief with much that coming into the business really so it wasn't that long right after it was not a lot of transition time there no and I mean my my grandfather was probably more passionate about the furniture than he was the other aspects of the business yeah he he was ready to transition my dad and my dad is a huge people person is great about relationship building and so he was all about on stepping in and serving our customers get secure you actually joined first that doubt furniture and then your grandpa was all ready out of the business at least the day to day aspect of Italy but he was still very interested he he paid attention what was going on yes he did he would like I said he would come in on Monday mornings we would all kind of sit together with him and just talk about how the business it over the weekend what was going on with things and he always had lots of questions and was always curious and interested in what we're doing Dan being from CMA consulting I know every family is a little bit different but yeah well I would say a lot of times you find that a retirement isn't necessarily retirement they're always kind of you know keeping an eye of what's going on with their business every business owner wants to see the business succeed after their watch and I do think it's a it's a good sign of an effective leader is what is the business to on their watch and what does the business do after their watch of the date prepares successor and do they make the transition and while it may not run the business day today if you get the mentor family members particularly if you can skip a generation it's like grandparents and grandchildren they always get along very well we love family business stories and we'll continue this one with the Dow furniture or next on the business a family business presented by CMA consulting I'm your host Ryan record in this is a rare instance.

And I so I would welcome the discussion back some extent, but this was the wrong proposal, and they need to anyone looking to do some needs to do things that are actually going to fix the problems that we have in this region at the back of the city council meeting they were petition forms for people to sign it convenient border-free holders, which could do some. We talked about this late last week and on and on and on this is really the sign of the times, you know, sometimes people say, well, you know, the economy's horrible can't find a job that ain't now baby jet co delivery, a two hundred forty five person, Houston, trucking and logistics company. Logistics company increase the pay for drivers about eighteen percent in the past year to counter a widespread shortage of workers that according to their chief executive Brian. Fielkow company drivers. Now average sixty five to seventy thousand dollars a year. Which he says is the industry norm. Is that something? So I know everybody's got something to Yap about and rightfully so there are countries still has problems. But when it comes to the economy and jobs. Has it ever been better? Well, maybe wages could be a little higher. I understand. But they're up there going higher than the wages went up last year more than they had in ten years. So it's in the right direction. Four three six seven nine hundred wages are really good. Just ask Sheila Sweeney. She was the head of the Saint Louis economic development partnership. She lost her job last week. They had a closed door session. According to published reports her compensation was five hundred thousand dollars in two thousand seventeen. She's the one who produced report trying to learn Amazon here that had Typos in it they misspelled Amazon the pages. Saint Louis county is actually lost jobs. But she was getting paid five hundred thousand dollars year total compensation her predecessor Denny Coleman may three hundred twenty one thousand dollars prior to taking this job. She headed up a small real estate firm. Nothing wrong with that. You do wonder how she became the head of economic development for Saint Louis county. What may have sealed her fate what it was reported a week ago Sunday in the Saint Louis post dispatch that at the insists at the insistence of the county executive they were steering all of the economic development money to Saint Louis county and skipping the city and when that leaked. I guess her days were numbered, even though she's the one who gave John rally a contract to promote Saint Louis county post. Ferguson, even though he was an insurance guy had no marketing or PR experience. But nonetheless, he got one hundred thousand dollars, which then mysteriously became one hundred thirty thousand dollars. Nobody's able to been able to account for that. And yeah. So she has left last year. A failed effort to build a practice facility for the Saint Louis blues on a county owned park land was led by Sweeney. Oh, this is a good one. That's when she told the post dispatch were only grading the land for stormwater management. And then I think it was Tony messengers or one of his colleagues found the paper saying, no all along. It was for a blues practice facility. That was a good one. Four three six seven nine hundred eight hundred nine to five eleven twenty. We're talking a little bit later today about merger, and how some people believe that we should merge the city and the county because right now, we're not able to grow economically. We can't grow jobs and population with the current structure. Well, a maybe if the county executive actually attended county council meetings and be if he didn't send all the economic development contracts to his political donors, maybe maybe we would have economic development who's up. Jim. Hello, you're on camel X. Thanks for taking my call. Charlie. Your point about the economy is just right on spot is usual in good for you to bring the good news to this country. That's that's happening in the immigration situation. Plays with our economy hugely in the work permits that these individuals have wanna come to this country work in setup that permit program like it was meant to be set up would just fill jobs and keep our economy growing in in. That's part of the immigration process is to allow these individuals to come in with a work permit make our country more successful baked him product. Citizens down the line if they want to apply. It's awesome. It that's what it was meant to do. Well, I totally agree with you, Jim, and you got to vet people you have to screen them. But you bring in the immigrants and they start low. They climb the ladder, they pay taxes. And as we're going to discuss a little later today with Larry sweater, who's written a brand new book on retirement called your complete guide to a successful, insecure retirement social security's going to run out of money by twenty thirty five. And so then all recipients will have to take three quarters of what they're promised for social security. You get seventy five percent of your payments. There is one way to counteract that and that is to increase the number of workers, contributing to social security. It's now nine sixteen at the voice of Saint Louis. Okay. Speaking of good news, we are heading in September to northern Europe. And. I hope you join us. We're cruising the Scandinavian countries, including Saint Petersburg Russia. You're like people just making this stuff up, right? And like you can make it up. I can make up something better. That's my takeaway every day. One of the things that and I mentioned it if you think this narrative is correct, but it seems to me that the black lives matter movement started more on the streets started more about policing about shootings of unarmed, black people and not indicting cops, and that certain degree has not shift is the wrong word, but has grown to encompass mass incarceration, which is about indicting too many people of color. Right. And then that leads to electoral changes like electing different local officials district different district attorney and Saint Louis county. Wesley bell who just one not seems to me like a kind of there's a direct line from Michael Brown's death and the protests in Ferguson to his election. I do see that in the same way or do you feel like I'm I have some of that wrong somewhere. We think by the difference between Justice and accountability, that kind of -bility is what happens after the trauma justices. The fact that. People shouldn't have to experience a trauma in the first place. So we think about the protests the pro we were industry around accountability were like, Mike Brown already died, right? We know he should be allowed, but he's not. So the best we can get at this moment is like some sort of charge or conviction. But when we step back relax, no, we're fight. The big goal is Justice where like people aren't sitting in cells, Tampa future, right? Like that's a part of the works. When we think about mass incarceration said, what does it mean that we arrest more people for weed than all violent crimes combined? That's like a Wild Thing. Even with the police, it's like a third of the people killed by strained in this country is actually killed by police officers. So so we talk about these things because it real and policing has been an issue in civil rights for like along. We weren't the first to discover this. We just had Twitter, right? Like that's what made this moment different. And I do think that the electoral piece again, I think people understood that like it is not enough just to yell at the people in power like you actually have to be those people to don't stop yell and this is like a both ending. So like yell, scream, stay in the street, Ambi the person. I think people understand that now how. You think given the way that Trump squats on everything these days and dominates everything that kinder- statement. Yeah, just I'm the visual Trump squatting. "Yes yes welcome into another addition of the tim mckernan show on the inside stl podcast network i am your host tim mckernan alongside executive producer john mar viagra for nick yale welcome in to the home loan expert dot com studios with our guest saint louis county executive candidate mark mani so many topics with mark covered here over the next hour plus in our conversation and i have a feeling you're going to enjoy hearing his perspective on a wide variety of saint louis centric topics as he readies himself for the election in august of two thousand eighteen we were sitting down and talking it over and it was one of those interviews that it just getting deeper and deeper and and and the thing that i really liked about it is so often wouldn't you're talking politics this is what my biggest complaints regarding talking politics is you already know the answer before you ask the question because you know where the person you're interviewing lines up politically and so therefore they're just going to follow the platform of whichever side so to speak there on will mark montavani isn't afraid to stray from what would be considered the party line and as a matter of fact as you will hear at one point in the interview i actually say to him i said i like a lot of the things you're saying but if somebody who's running in saint louis county i'm not sure that a lot of the people who would be voting in saint louis county will like what you're saying and marks response was okay then fine i don't want to win the job if i'm going to have to essentially not be who i am and not share what i really think is important to get saint louis in the region back on track and i found that answer to be in.
