Unmasking a Killer

"Let's just start with a recap so far. We have covered. How him hubs best friend. Betsy furrier ended up murdered with fifty five stab wounds. Only five days after making pam hop her life insurance beneficiary. That's free is husband. Russ was tried for her murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after spending almost four years in prison. He successfully appealed for a new trial and was acquitted of all charges. I discussed the corruption ineptitude and basically the overall nefarious -ness of the police and prosecution when it came to his case. I mean seriously guys if there is this case doesn't make your blood boil. I don't even know what to tell you. I don't know what well it is trifling because this case is so complex with multiple ongoing arcs. We are actually going to backtrack a little bit for part three back to rest free first trial. If you recall right before russ's first trial which began on november eighteenth. Twenty thirteen police. Investigators interviewed pam multiple times. Because obviously she was the last person to see. Betsy makes sense. Police were aware of the life insurance policy change and questioned her about it a couple times. She was always immediately defensive and she ended up bringing up her mother. Shirley newman using her almost as defense as to why she had no motive for money. So here's a clip of pam hop from a july of twenty thirteen pretrial interview with police to moscow. My mom got an accident in and home. I really hate to say it wanted mind. My were half a million that i get when she dies. My mom is dementia. Doesn't have the time now. I am ledge person. But if i really wanted money wasn't easier way than trying to combat somebody gets saying shirley newman pam seventy eight year. Old mother died just four months after this interview on october. Thirty first of two thousand thirteen evening. Just two and a half weeks before russ ferreira's first trial. She had fallen off the railing from her third floor. Apartment in an upscale gated assisted living facility. There had been no witnesses and police deemed it an accident. Let's break down what happened. Shirley's husband and pam's father died in the year. Two thousand when she became unable to care for herself pam and her three siblings work together to get surely into the lake view. Park independent senior living community in fenton missouri. Pam would frequently visit her during the day on october. Twenty ninth twenty. Thirteen surely had a doctor's appointment pam transported her to the appointment and then surely spent the night at her house. Spending time with pam's family the next day. Roughly five pm pam and shirley arrived back at lake park pam instructed the facility staff not to expect her mom for either dinner or breakfast. She then left the next day on halloween at two thirty pm a housekeeper through surely newman dead. Underneath her third-floor balcony there was damage to the railing and she had fallen to her death after two police investigations. The saint louis county medical examiner's office deemed shirley newman's death as an accident. Shirley had died from blunt trauma to the chest from the fall and the medical examiner also found point eight four micrograms of zoll padam generic ambien in her blood. That's more than eight times. What someone her age and size should be taking but still it was ruled an accident. Even though a structural engineer said that there was absolutely zero away zero way. A woman of shirley newman's weight and height could've damage the six individual pieces of railing. Pam hop was the last person to see shirley alive. Yes she was never interviewed her siblings however had been even though they weren't even local to the area or present and hadn't seen their mother in quite a while in his first trial russ was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. Just a few weeks later. Shirley newman's death and pam's presence was never investigated and never considered moving on to january twenty fourteen as we talked about in part to the saint. Louis dispatch in k. t. v. I began a deep dive investigation into betsy for his death. Right after ross was initially convicted

"Courtney and Steve I've been talking to Saint Louis, county police to try to get answers to the mini question Jones's family has Diana's relatives told me before the suicide they were getting death threats and they believe in Saul connected to his mother's involvement in the Ferguson's protests. Suicidal. Rate Leave his mother. No No. No. nope. Mother knows jail. That's why Melissa Kennedy Wants Saint Louis County police to dig deeper into her son's death he was not. Suicidal on October seventeenth, she found Donya hanging from this tree in their backyard with bruises on his face, and this is our post that's been shared across America he was in spirits McCain says the twenty-four-year-old wasn't depressed and was starting a real estate business. She believes there's more to this story. So somebody's with my son McKenna's prominent Ferguson activists told me she thinks her family is being targeted and the last two months she says, they've been getting death threats through social media and those threats recently showed a better doorstep. They watch my house and when my. Husband and my son would approach the car. They would drive off I asked her how she Kalinka threats to her involvement in Ferguson she would not go into detail tonight. She also told me she never reported these threats to police and I asked why not? Because we felt like we had his you know the Saint Louis? County coroner still not give news for any preliminary reports. My Baby. It hurts Saint Louis County police told us for now. This remains a suicide investigation saying that he committed suicide. Now you gotta respect him both the family and police did say there was a chair near his body however, family members told me this sheets used to hang him did not come from their house and the not us to tie the sheets where advance. So they don't believe Dong would have been capable of making Ashley, Linkin reporting live for news four. Hello this is more. "It's pretty much to to each their own now Saint Louis county is concerned public officials issuing a travel advisory shortly after that big party fearing people who attended it could bring covert nineteen back into the St Louis metro area please when you come home so according yourself for two weeks so very likely that that sort of behavior would lead to more cases across the region McGraw hill haven is in that area every day he's our morning show radio host with our affiliate K. T. R. S. and St Louis I spoke to him about what happened at lake of the Ozarks and what officials are concerned about following the party a lot of people went to the Ozarks and a lot of people partied over Memorial Day weekend yes misery is known as the show me state and we showed our true colors over the weekend yeah the other thing about it is like the Ozarks is getting a lot of the attention because of the video that that went viral but there are reports from border to border from Kansas city to St Louis and it late in the Ozarks were you know sort of they thought they were out celebrating the end of the pandemic when you were starting to loosen things up and you're you're supposed to be social distancing everybody thought it was time square at the end of World War two the governor of Missouri he said yeah it didn't look good but you know what his words it's not the state's job to break up a party like that yeah it's a difficult it's a difficult topic because when does the government step in and win his personal responsibility takeover the governor had a legitimate point what do you want him to do is it time for him to send in the National Guard to go to backwater jacks and if there are fifty a hundred two hundred restaurants all violating some type of order we don't have the resources nobody has the resources and what is personal responsibility come in not only that we found out what about a good governmental entities found out about it after it happened so you can't go back in what go track the people down or standing less than six feet apart St Louis county asking those who went to all those parties it like in the Ozarks they return home they've gone back to work there saying Hey can you quarantine self quarantine for fourteen days the likelihood of that happening I would think is pretty darn small boat but what it does St Saint Louis folks think of that yeah there's a couple of issues to all of this if you're not personally responsible on a Saturday at lake of the Ozarks I always end up on this and going to get wrist responsibility on a Wednesday when it's time to go back to work but you know what it wasn't just party animals as juniors in college who were at lake of the Ozarks it was nurses it was business people it was you know the cross section of society and they're coming back not just a Saint Louis not just to Kansas city but you know Iowa Arkansas and Nebraska but lots of you know like the Ozarks is a big regional tourism attraction so they're all gonna go back and what what do you do as a business do you say Hey I saw on your social media feed your down a lake of the Ozarks stay home two weeks and all by the way I'm not paying you early on in the pandemic we saw in Florida spring breakers and they were saying you know what if it happens it happens and they took a lot of grief young people and people really criticizing them that was before we knew what it covered nineteen could do to people now two and half months later people are saying you know what you knew what this could do you know how dangerous it was and you went anyway what's the response like in Saint Louis county and in the region to the folks who did go and party is it really you know to look at his results your responsibility is to to protect the rest of us too we know that masks have become political right and so you wear a mask and you're wearing your political affiliation on your face so there's there is that portion there's another portion that is really quite interesting I'm wearing a mask to protect you you're wearing a mask to protect me you one the other hand you're not wearing a mask and basically what you're saying to society is I don't care if I have it and I don't care if I give it to you I want to go to the store I wanna go to lake of the Ozarks I wanna party I wanna sip Jello shots off off of the girls belly McGraw hill haven from the Big Five fifty K. terrace and St Louis thank you so much sherry is always a pleasure thank you for the invitation what happened at the lake of the Ozarks may be just the beginning of what's ahead this summer with all of us itching to get outside as the weather warms up many of us are following CDC social distancing and mask wearing roles but there are always going to be those who don't and even if it's a small amount it could make a big difference even if you are following the guidelines once everything re opens there are still things you might want to keep in mind when you consider how much risk you are willing to take Dr Jon brown Steen is an epidemiologist in the chief innovation officer at Boston children's hospital this week he helped us parse through some of the areas that you should be most careful about as you go out more during the summer months okay so I'm going to run down a list of things that we usually do in the summer and if you could tell me whether it would be a high risk or medium risk or a low risk generally obviously not in everything I'm gonna have a barbecue in my backyard everybody's going to bring their own beer and their own lawn chair gonna sit there and we're gonna have ten people in the backyard six feet away high medium or low yeah I would consider that to be the medium to low risk here in our small group setting people are being generally thought fall about how I'm keeping some level distance I mean no activity is gonna be zero rest but that one generally I think it is and it's outside which we know is sort of a better place to be than indoors were received a lot of these transmission belts are generally speaking that would be submitted my friends have to use the bathroom should I let her use it I would say yes I mean again you know we've we've got a live a world that you know is reasonable clearly promoting hand washing in cleanliness I mean is key but let your friend's bathroom okay doctor John I really really need a hair cut high medium or low this is an odd one because we know that her dressing is is an activity that is so one of the first things open up again which is a little bit baffling to me because that requires a lot of human should contact you can't practice social distancing get a hair cut so I put that more in the medium to high the reason maybe it's more medium is that just want to warn rather than many too many I want to go to the beach I want to go to the pool I'm going to stay six feet away do I have to wear a mask and what's my risk factor there I think that generally at the beach and the pool here sort of generally social distancing is again in the sort of low to medium activity beaches are are huge spaces if you can practice social distancing mask is not necessarily can be as informed though of course if we're in a place there there is a lot of cases and and master cursing you should do that there's no sort of clear evidence that pools are big church environments for disease transmission it's really more about the contacts that you have and if you're able to practice some level social distancing them that really then turns it into the low medium category okay and finally I want to go to church and I want to go out to brunch after church what do you think about that this is course a very controversial topic right now because everyone should have the freedom to practice their religion at the same time churches tend to be high density environments so you would be hard to understand sort of what practices goes churches just like any other sort of Big Bend you're practicing are people able to maintain some distance is massacring courage that would you know put it more in medium activity if there's massive congregation bass mixing any precautions that can turn into high risk activity similarly with brunch restaurants are are doing so much to keep people safe right now and you know limiting capacity and also encouraging outdoor seating now turning towards a low medium I rest type activity thank you so much for writing this down I think it really is helpful for those of us who want to do things outside and want to see our friends and want to eat out again but we're just not quite sure how to do it at thank you and stay healthy and take care.

"And the police. I understood what someone could suspect the police of covered a lot of protests over the years, but the cops in and around Ferguson, notably casual about violence. I saw an officer pointing an assault weapon mounted on a tripod at a group of demonstrators that included elderly people in small children before another demonstration one that I didn't cover one cop Texan, another quote is going to be a lot of fun beating the hell out of the beds was the sun goes down, and nobody can tell us apart. He was later charged with assaulting a protester was actually an undercover cop. This American life reached out to the Saint Louis county. Police department for comment. The spokesman e mailed back saying they were roughly fifty two police departments and the Saint Louis area, which employ about twenty seven hundred officers essentially saying that you can't categorize all of them the same way. And he said the officer with the assault weapon on a tripod was trying to locate an SUV reportedly had several assault weapons in it. And that the people in the vehicle with threatening to kill law enforcement. But there's a broader context to this conversation. I taught African American history courses at often begin with a series of questions. What if I told you that a person was killed in front of hundreds of witnesses? But no one raised the finger to stop it. Or even report it in. What if I told you that crowd view, the murder as entertainment and packed lunches to watch the spectacle? In what if they've.

"But it is a good thing that she is attempting to make sure that less folks are are being arrested for marijuana possession. But in the larger conversation around mass incarceration, we should also remember that in order to solve mass incarceration. You can't just focus on non violent drug offenders. You have to focus on the larger picture of violence, and how it manifest itself? Yep. And even with that being said he'd had the police still arrest more people for marijuana possession than all violent crime combined. They. Oftentimes will talk about mass incarceration, we're talking about like the prison population. And it's true that there are particular at the state level a larger proportion of people who are incarcerated for so-called violent offenses than for marijuana possession. But in terms of arrests like what the police are actually arresting people for whether or not they ended up in prison for it. Like marijuana still makes up a huge proportion of what people are arrested for. And so, you know, it's good to see that not only in Baltimore. But in a number of jurisdictions now we've seen in Saint Louis county under Wesley bell. We've seen state attorney Kim FOX in Chicago Cook County, you know, many different. Prosecutors now are moving in the direction of decriminalizing marijuana refusing to charge people not only for possession, but you know, under Maryland Mosey, she's actually proposing to go further than that and not charge people for distribution or intend to distribute based on the quantity alone. So somebody would have to have like plastic bags or like scales in order to be charged with intent to distribute which again, I think even that. There could be progress made on but it's good to see prosecutor stepping up hopeful that the police will eventually stop arresting people from our wanna if it's not being charged. I'd love to dig into some of the data around interest deductions, cities and counties where prosecutors are not prosecuting people for marijuana. Are. We seeing fewer arrests for that..

It's fine with me as as a lifelong Saint Louis resident a message you would like to convey to the people who are who may be hearing hearing from you in an extended conversation for the first time, especially if those people are going or city residents and are going to be voting. I was just like them to know that I am very sincere. I believe in the city of Saint Louis, I believe that we can be better than we are right now today, I do believe that if I'm elected. For years that there would be some drastic changes in the Saint Louis area when it comes to reducing crime and neighborhood development across the city, not just portions of the city, and I think that that's what they need to know, they need to know that I've served for twelve years on the state level. I've been able to bring approximately twenty eight million dollars back to the city or education crime reduction. Re entry programs. So they need to know that I am very effective, and I'm sincere and I wanted to see a change in Saint Louis area because before too long a lot of neighborhood who have been left behind state Senator Jamila Nasheed with us here on the program state Senator we really really appreciate your time.
