Donovan's grand slam carries Cardinals over Padres 5-4

"Brendan Donovan 7th inning Grand Slam gave the Saint Louis Cardinals a 5 to four win over the San Diego Padres ending a three game losing streak Donovan's blast came just at the right time for a cardinal's offense that scored just one run in its prior 33 innings looking something just trying to fly ball to the big part of the field trying to get one across and cut the lead a little bit And it just kind of ran into my barrel a little bit more Jack flaherty went 6 innings for St. Louis allowing three runs on four hits striking out 9 and earning his first win of the season Joe musgrove starting for the Padres went 5 innings allowing just a run on 5 hits in a no decision Philip gone San Diego

Who are who. They are authentically and never really get that back. You know because it's a practice in this a part of your personality and if you if you bury it long enough you'll forget even exist yet or not have the courage to be able to live it out exactly so few months ago. We had a mayoral election. In saint louis and i had the mayoral candidate care. Spencer on the podcast. One time. she's interesting person. She was talking about all all the things that were going on. And making the case for like you know because for people that don't know the people in the county where i live. Don't vote for people. You're seeing the real estate market. Go up three hundred percent in the last four years this all speaking people wanting to have that personal connection aside their community if not we will see more suburban sprawl happening across the country. And we're still seeing that peace more also seeing that revitalization urban centers sue after we launched the other day i went home and i found this saint louis american article that you had written. I think several years ago so this is an article about you being eighteen to twenty one somewhere in there and talking about losing a member of your community. Talk a little bit about that article. Because that man i was really something. Yeah man so You know one of my slogans. I wasn't always social worker. But i also think that you know as young adults that that's what we're meant to do. You know i. This is probably why hate cancel culture right because as young adults teenagers and emerging adults. We're supposed to make mistakes. Were supposed to go out here and test the limits and see You know what's the right niche for us Unfortunately though in certain situations where your basic needs are met you probably be pushing a little too far so Yeah i i had. A group of friends I was running with Involved some pretty dangerous situations Typical typical S- things so drug trafficking Gang activity Potential acts of violence. i've never seen any myself but you know so whenever there's smoke there's fire of course so yeah i i had some Some experiences you know. "You don't stay there because it's beautiful. You stay there because you're knitted into the community you have you know you're a part of that fabric and it's one of those things that to leave it would be. I mean it would cost you way no matter how you have to make so much more money to be able to offset the loss of the family to watch your kids and you know connection into other opportunities. Whatever that is it's almost probably impossible to imagine not definitely and it's funny because being a social worker people always wanna lean on me for emotional life advice in one of the things. I always always encourage people. I always say. Go spread your wings. Joy life you know go do some self journeys figure out what you wanna do. You ever figured out for yourself but when people say i have to move the first question is what are you moving forward because if you're moving to get away into reinvent yourself i'm sorry but in the world we live in a day. Your your reputation is going to follow you. And if you're moving before your own internal demons Those are going to go with you no matter what so. It's one of those questions though like you look at a dilapidated place like let's imagine e saint louis right and you you say what. Hey people that are here. "Local community worked at the summer camp. They always needed additional hands on dick at the at the rec center and it just for some reason i left. They're happier than any dollar amount. Had ever made previous so that part. I said this must be it. So i know when i call some of my old friends and i was like i think i might be going to social work. Do some stuff with some kids was funny. When watch for instance. I could've told you that. And he's like you know we used to call you the counselor highschool so it was. It was like you know it's funny. How those natural progressions almost brings you back around full circle later on in life and i think that's what happened for me. You know what i saw. When i was there was kids would go from like happy playing great time. Laughter to instantaneous. It would seem almost that they would get into a fight or they would be ready to throw down like on the scale. That if when i was a kid you you would least see this progression lead up and it would. Maybe only happened once a month. Maybe once every two months but this was happening like multiple times a day and one of the conclusions. I came to but i'd be very interested in hearing perspective on. This is a lot of those kids. Didn't have the language to describe different emotions. They were feeling right so they had. I'm angry they had. I'm embarrassed right. And maybe he didn't even know the word embarrassed but they would feel that right so they were feeling this range of emotions but they only had instead of having a dial where they could change it or check check different dials at the same time. It was very clunky. It was happy angry. Happy embarrassed and that seemed to me to be something that i don't know how you resolve it but it seems something to do with language. Not definitely i think is even more deeper than language right because at the end of the day What you're talking about is a spectrum of emotions right and so they can only.

"But i mean we can absolutely right. There's a lot of children right off the bat there. Yeah right. I think we can all say certain things that seem a little off but my my thing is my questioning of him. Where does that lead me to. Does that lead me to looking for answers a that. I lead me to Looking to to run away from him. I think those are two different things that we're trying to that that some people at least them to run away but at least them to try to figure out answers. Some individuals lease to trying to figure out smashed. Yes it definitely led me to try and figure out answers one hundred percent. I read some of this stuff. I grew up in the church. Little backstory group in the church parents pastors all that funston And and i just believed it man whatever. It was fed to me as like yes. Jesus loves god is love. Everybody needs to be a christian so we can save the world right and that was it. And then i then i picked up the book and i started reading it. Holy cow one of my favorite lines on the show is show me the love. There is so much hate in destruction in murder and torture and there's so much in here that's horrible. So what i did was i went through it. I read it. And then i a book called the bible says what so. I researched it. And what i have found is. There's really no good reason for the things that he doesn't here. Especially as the slaughtering of children slaughtering of to the lot story for crying out. Oh my god that's such a horrible story. Lots of righteous man. This guy who's willing to let his daughters go out and giving his daughters to a town of people get raped. This is the righteous man in the in the story. How is that and then later on how he his own daughters go ahead. Sorry sorry just a just a clarifier that he did. He want them number one to be raped He wanted to successors sorry. Sorry sorry okay. Go ahead Did the bible necessarily say that he was a righteous man. Yes hundred percent. Lots and lots just meant me. Remember where it's at it's in there. It's a lot as a righteous man. So we go from ladas a righteous man that that's the question I i don't necessarily see a as the scripture says right. I don't necessarily see that. He was actually the raiders met. You don't see him as righteousness. Now now. i have to search through my shenanigans. Here i apologize if you jumped but if you jump through a lot just leave because daughters as in like he wanted to But he was he was drunk or he was to jump to remember they. They jr but the bible says that they meet him to get drunk and they slept with him right. Second peter. two. Seven second peter. Two seven okay. Okay yeah if you if you don't if you jump back He rescue righteous man. Who was distressed by the depraved context of. Yeah yeah fair enough. Yeah you're right. I was looking more so at that story. "In that sense of you're saying who's in control. Yeah i believe that. God is still always in control. I believe that god is is ultimately a still on the throne And so they're in this wrong. And so there's a sense when i when i used that terminology saying ultimately that his kingdom is always going to be able to reign as always always will rain especially when we look at the daniel and revelation prophecies and we looked at for instance the golden statue or or the statute as broken up into denman different compartments We know that at the when the stone breaks down There's only one kingdom that standard. That's god's kingdom and so. I do believe that guy's keenum was always going to be the one who stands and rains But does that mean that evil does not have. It's it's it's It's poll in the world right now. I do believe that. Of course you know. The devil is actively looking to destroy and to pull down as many people as he can with him and so There's there's this battle of good and evil that's happening around us every single day and And so when you when you ask a question who a control. I believe that got us ultimately stolen control but i also do believe that through the concept of free will. There are a lot of people who are still able to do as day so true please but evil won't win at the end. That does the devil have free. Will i believe so. One hundred percent Why does y'all way allow this ultimate bad guy Are y'all way god. Why does he allow this ultimate bad guy to to pull to to have any kind of control at all in this world. Wisey allowing him to run rampant. I mean that's a really good question. Because i mean even if you go back at the whole concept of how lucifer became the devil ray because some people will ask the question will didn't god create the devil and yes..

"Heading my way. We're just walking. We end up going single file. Because they look like they're taking up a bunch of the spaces on the On the pathway concrete pathway. And i walk by these kids in this girl. She's probably fifteen sixteen years old. She she shoulder bumps me she gives me a little shoulder check and i look back at her and i wanted to say something but i did. Not because i didn't wanna start anything. I don't know if someone else's armed. I did not have you know a handgun on me at the time. Not that not. That would be opposed to that but it was frightening. So yeah you want to take your daughter. It's not just gunfire. It's other things that might make you feel unsafe in saint louis and we have not solve that one. One idea this is crazy is think about this. What if we had a few more police officers that are on the street when we have events. Well were down. One hundred and fifty officers in the city. Saint louis and describe that because people don't know what that means well it. It's a combination so you can't. They've never really fulfilled the positions that are open in. Who would want to be a cop. That's part of it but also don't don't forget you have people retiring which is also part of what you just said because people have these cops i've had it. I'm getting outta here. So now you have even when you feel some of the openings you have more openings because of the retirements but at any given time. This is stunning to. I don't want to misquote this. Because i just talked about on the radio but the amount of officers on the street in the citizen listed any given time is not a lot and a lotta. These officers are in single cars. Unfortunately even what happened with the car that was destroyed over the weekend shabby that police officer was in that car by himself. "Or we go cause some ruckus and like once that spins out of control getting back contained. Do that you're exactly describing. What happened in saint louis last weekend with the kids on the cop cars right there are now you know. I said the mayor says there should be consequences. Will there be first of all just even finding the people that were involved. You can match video and pictures but there won't be any consequences in a lot of them. Some of them looked underage to me which is another interesting question but no there won't be consequences and they know that there's no shock wire. Nobody should be surprised. It crime is spiraling out of control violent crime in particular in cities across the country. We even this week. I highlighted our mayor who somebody tweeted out because fox news did a story on the record high murder rate that we're having here in singles. I did something last year. Vents back up a little bit. It was at this point last year. We're our mayor former mayor letter. Kristen was warning people about covid. We had this big outdoor party at the lake of the ozarks. Remember that it went so a bunch of people went to a pool. How dare they outdoors during a pandemic and it was deemed one of the most offensive events that you could have ever seen with the mayor of saint louis cracking down saying if you were at that damn pool if you come back to my city where people are dropping like flies from gunfire every flipping day. That's my words not her. She should have thrown that in. If you come into my city you're going to quarantine for fourteen days and you wetter better. Wear a damn mask key. Meet a break okay. You're not talking about the real issues. That saint louis is confronting. So what i did and i did it for a reason. I think i made a point. Is there was a there was a longtime during last summer. Vance where the number of people who were dying from kovic was eclipsed by over night so when that happened at the lake of the i made a prediction. I said i'm going to predict right now. That the number of people who die from cova is going to be less than the number of people who die from gunfire it was very close the numbers at the top of my head but it was all the way until december. This was decided. Now that's horrifying now people can say. Well that's a false equivalency. Comparing to i get it. I know but i was trying to make a point because all i heard from light cruising and on twitter where mask where mass mess. That wasn't helping people wear a mask when they were getting hit in riddled with bullets in when kids are sitting around in saint. Louis just one kid. A couple years ago just got hit in the sanga seven year. Old kid who still. The gunman is not been prosecuted by. Kim gardner circuit attorney. We may have even talked about that last time so there are all these things that happen. And throughout the course of the year the violence kept building the violence kit building. So now you have fox. That did a story just this week about all the violence in saint. Louis somebody tweets out that all you know. You've made it if you're on fox news to shower jones. Because they did a story about her she tweets it out and says something like oh..

"I try to stay ahead of the curve on that and find out what's going on things change all the time as you know. I mean i could be doing the show today at four o'clock four thirty boom. There's another story and then we jump on that and that's something that radio can do that. Television can't do television can do it with with pictures. You had a fire. Something like that. Television does a much better job but radio can be right on top of something very quickly. And i like that and your podcast can't really do that. They can analyze. After the fact which i do like the longer format will and you can have a local or specific podcast. But they don't have the same salience as the speed with. Which were you're talking about and like this is actually changed. I think our culture in our american society is that so few people have access to regular local news that you think of ourselves as one giant country and so we're paying attention to one national story whereas you're like hey i have to include things that are going on. You know down the street from the from the studio. That's one of the things that local radio does. And that's what i do obviously hand a lot of national topics but we have the local spin on them. So it's interesting but what you just described. I think is also just gonna keep getting worse because local journalism in real journalism is just disappearing because of budgets. And the way everything's changing. So i don't know how that kind of works itself out because we're going to really miss stories in the future that people should know locally of course shen even positive stories. That won't be told because you don't have enough good journalists out there you have all these formats centers spread out but local. Newspapers are dying to a certain extent. Local radio stations. Don't have the audience that they use to so it's problematic. I think so. Let's talk about local stories. Because i had gone a little time in saint louis is getting better. We aren't having all these problems. The other day. I flip on twitter and i see people standing on top of cop cars. That have their lights running jumping up and down taking photographs screaming hitting that thing. What in the hell on. And so what you're describing happened. We can get our economy up and running again and we won't have to continue to invest and the covid relief because we'll be functioning again as a community. That's what i want to see. And then you know i. It's imperative for me to know whether or not we're going to be given out stimulus to individuals or we're going to be shoring up the government the basic functioning of our governments. You know we have to bail out businesses at the end of the day. Cities are businesses to the city of saint. "Do you have that perception that it is a pit that you're climbing into or do you not have the nihilism. It is a pet. Not i mean and st louis is one of the piteous pets. I suppose with most people problems and we have two hundred and seventy nine years. I'm a city all a young. I'm accounts person. I'm one at six hundred. Seventy nine elected officials in saint louis. It's unbelievable so what happens. In a city where the governance structure is so deconstructed and the power dynamic is spread across so many people you have individuals fighting klein for relevance and a political structure. That is just so fraction and it is a pet But i am committed to san luis. I'm born and raised here. I love the city. And i want this community to be one rear. My son is now nine of you know at age. She got a job can find an opportunity here and continue to live here and right. Now we are sputtering out relevance our population has stagnated for four decades. Is we do not change force. Now who's gonna do it for us. It's just not gonna happen. I look ahead. At the enormous amount of opportunity as we see major shifts and human capital throughout the world following a global pandemic like over nineteen and looking ahead at climate migration and what that means for a midwestern city along the largest body of free flowing freshwater in the united states. The opportunity is endless not to mention they. Technology hubs that we have here the the intellectual infrastructure that we have to capitalize on the in the upside is enormous. And you're right it is a pet and it's going to take somebody who understands the the deficits that we have and how to operate and such a dysfunctional political system and i've had the opportunity to do a lot of that longman when when i think about one hundred some odd elected officials for one city particularly a city of okay. The whole region. What in the locus of power. What is it that people are fighting over it..
