John Hunter from The Frozen Rope Podcast

"Let's jump right in man to frozen rope. Let us know who you are and what you do. My name is john hunter. I am thirty years old from northeast. Philly i'm a union glazer by day but i am a podcast. Her by night a baseball podcast about three months ago during the world series. I decided to go for it. I never I always wanted to do it. But i just. It was weird. It was like a couple of years. There was a couple of years where i was just telling my brother like i wanna to do this. Like this is what i to do. And then you know just life happens or you. Just you know procrastinate on stuff and it just just ended up not happening. And i mean it's kinda crazy. I'm probably the only person you've ever benefit benefited from the pandemic. I decided like all right. Well i have nothing else better to do right now and i just decided that his by like all like the microphones already had headphones off but like my wife already had. My wife has a mac book. And i was like all right. Well why don't just get into it. And i'll do it. And then the world series happy. You know what this is what. I'm going to start it i. I was sitting on headphones stuff for like two months before i even recorded an episode and it was just like it was crazy. But that's pretty much how it all started. So how did you come up with a name the frozen ropes. Explain that all right so the frozen rope a frozen rope in its own. Right is a a line drive or a a like in basketball. It's considered like something that just like shack is. He just threw the ball pretty much of the rim. And that's like for baseball. Like i remember the first time i've ever heard the term. It was vladimir guerrero was playing. I think for the expos at the time and he threw a lot. He threw a liner from from the right field right to the catcher and the and the announcer was like that was a frozen rope and i was like i like that and then it became my gamertag on like xbox back fox three six and i was an like then it just over the years. I was like you know if i ever do one. If i were to go podcast the name of it will be the frozen row. Podcast and this has been since i was like. I don't know maybe like twelve. Thirteen new podcast. Ball's probably if i ever do something the frozen rope lock. That's also again all right so so explain a little bit about the process right three months in. Obviously you had the name. Since you're twelve yeah What about the logo and things like that. So the logo was pretty simple. Is the major league baseball. i mean. hopefully they don't come after me for infringement or anything but it's a. It's literally just a baseball. The baseball symbol. The major league baseball symbol with headphones on it and it started off as being red white and blue normal. The normal one and then. I got affiliated with media. Group called the buzz and they were just like you know we. We don't wanna get hit with infringement. They're like so. What can we do here. And i was like. I mean you could change the color if you want to your color scheme. And that's what they did. They changed it to their scholar. Scheme ended up working out pretty well. They put the ball in the headphones. And it was just completely just change. Everything about it so it was. It was pretty cool. That's awesome so explain a little bit about how you got connected with the buzz okay. So the i'm in like this. I'm a nerd when it comes to baseball. So i'm in a sports group simply just pretty much baseball. It's called sports chat but it's really not just baseball pretty much on a why they don't just change it a baseball chat whatever so it started off with that and then there's this guy like you know i told him i made episode or two and he's like oh give let me let give it a listen so he gave listen and he was like he's like you know me and my body just started a media group not too long ago with another group and the guy some. I went nuts so they just decided this move on from that it ended up being where they just were like a baseball podcast because they have like five. They'd five podcast on their thing right now and before me and all five of them were either for them. Were wrestling podcast. I don't know why you need that. Many good for them. And there's a guy who's actually from like england who's on there which is pretty cool. It's pretty cool. The way they do it. They're a great group of guys and it's pretty cool everything and then there was a guy. Then there's some rain on. I think there's a soccer program to that. They're trying to generate right now. Trying to get more people to watch and on anyone. You guys are in a soccer. But if he's argo try that and then Then they different stuff on there but it was pretty cool the way that it kind of came about and then i told them that i wrote. I've be right little articles. I've written articles for guys know the tattoo dunphy. So dunphy is a friend of mine. I've known for a long time. But i went to high school with a grade school. I believe too. And like i've known for a long time him in this other dude joe that i'm friends with a started a base. They started a podcast and stuff called like deep fly and they do a bunch of stuff for their own media group. So they asked me. Would you want to write for our so. I was doing like little baseball pieces for the phillies. And i would just write little things for them and it ended up being pretty cool. It was it was like a cool experience. So i get myself into that type of realm like i always wanted to do something baseball related. I didn't care what it was like i. I'm way too small to play and to old to play so it's just got past that and i was an in so i kind of looked on the other side and i don't know it's just something that i was always into so it all worked out well so so explain a little bit about So to download An episode from the frozen rope. What what can they expect. What some of the topics you hit Things like that So one thing i always. I'm a red sox fan. That's the start off. And i always tell people baseball fan. I red sox me and second. There's i never really ever wanted to do anything as far as just saying like i want to cover one team. Yes there is. Because i'm very diverse. When it comes to the sport. I know pretty much. I don't want to brag. But i know a lot i know i know pretty much everything enough to make my own podcast and be confident with the things that i say. Yeah so i feel as if when you go on there. You'll see someone who's not biased. You'll see somebody who you know truly cares about. The sport gives a good input on my thoughts. In how. I how. I look at the game. Yeah i got a guy the other day. Text me one of my friends from the from the union. Us just like it's crazy. It's like he's like. I feel like i know the game. He's like but you like no it and he's like he's like you. It's almost like i give him like a managerial like input. Like i've been around since i was like nine. My dad was a head coach of saint joe's prep. He was a great baseball player. I've been around the game my whole life and then it just you know i. It just been something that i've always been in love with. I told my wife. That's unfortunate. You are probably my second. Love will always be my first and she just tells me she hates me for that. But it's funny. it's just it's just. It's just how it's always been baseball's always been there you know and so it's i always wanted to do something with it and you'll see somebody who just did something with

The Secret to Getting Motivated For Your Workout

"How do you motivate yourself to work out but first of all. I just want to quickly address the new year new. You mentor that. Banded about every flipping january. I hate it. I loathe it. It's lazy. it's unhelpful and unnecessary. And somebody's magazines. They would always be the new year new you concept or you'd get their release it sort of end of november and tips for new year new nonsense absolute nonsense. Do you think the rock thinks. I need to twenty pounds of pure muscle for my next role but damage thursday afternoon. So it's not the right time. I'll have to come back with us on monday morning. Of course he doesn't so this idea that an e program has to start on a monday or on the first or in january is in my opinion a complete and utter nonsense so let's disregard this idea of new year new you right because really if you're looking for motivation for anything goal oriented whether that's fitness health or otherwise then it's about a shift that happens in your mind in my opinion not about push up oppress iran squat a burpee or one single workout. And if i'm being very very honest. I've sort of circled around this podcast for a few weeks now knowing that i wanted to do it but also i just have to be really honest. I find it a very difficult topic to talk about. Because for years. I've looked motivated from the outside and indeed i've done a lot of things that are motivated person would do. But i was rarely achieving the rather nebulous goal. I had set myself which was of losing weight because i was attempting to achieve something by only using one approach which is exercise. And i also know that this subject she went about body image is such an emotional one and it doesn't matter how good ones intention is to put out something that might be helpful even me and the reason why i hate new year new year's because i used to find it so triggering because i was looking at it through the emotional filter a feeling not good enough all of my garbage and junk emotional detritus that was affecting me. I was looking all of those things and therefore found it quite negative experience because of my own baggage and even if somebody said something with good intention i might have seen it through a filter. I found it triggering so i do find a little bit difficult to talk about and i just hope that you know. This isn't meant to be. Triggering is really honestly meant to be helpful. And the only reason i'm focusing on fitness is because that's thing that i'm asked about the most and so it feels like It feels like it's worth addressing. But also all of the tips that i'm going to mention hey can be applied to any goal whether it's one that takes place in the gym or when you're working out or whether it's to deal with work or to do anything that you want to achieve to be honest and so this is my point when it comes to motivation and to know what your goal is and i can use my many many years of failure to failure to achieve my goal to understand why this is such a vital part so let's use my particular experience of weight loss in the sense of i would come at it thinking to wait. I must use exercise to do. But actually where i've been able to achieve success if you will in weight loss is took a step back from. It really looked at it and to all of the things that contributed to me being heavier than i wanted to be. And that was the only time that i was able to make any significant progress that has lost it and i know i'm using the example of weight loss of lothair. I do apologize. But it's the one. I have the most experience with an i can perhaps for the most insight into but this doesn't exclusively apply to weightless as i said so. My goal was to lose weight. And i used exercise as a blunt instrument with which to beat myself and the objective. But as i've discussed lengthier on the poco my issues with weight or a variety of things including emotional eating many many things mental blocks whatever and a thirty minute session. Can't sort out your emotions or anything like that. But i was able to take step back. Look at the bigger picture and make tweaks and a lotta varies of my life. In order to achieve my goal of not being at of being at a weight that made me unhappy at uncomfortable potentially unhealthy the long term. That really worries me. This look different for everyone. But there is an opportunity to sit down and create something whether it's writing down a mind map or just listing the things that might be standing between you and your goals and then work from there to try and put something in place. It will be helpful to you to try and achieve it in another thing. I wanted to say about goals here while we're talking about setting them. If you find that anything you're describing a goal is preceded by the words should then definitely look at it. I don't like to talk in definitive absolutes team much but this is one more. I feel confident in saint joe's to have a just take another look at that. Just come back to it and take a look at again. Because i've come to find the word should give because actually there's a hint actually should to me has a hint of not wanting to do something about it if it's a should i have to explore a little bit more thinking about it. Think about all the things so you might use the word. Should i should clean the bathroom. I should take the bins. I should do that admin. I should go and apologize these things that you might not necessarily want to do. I know finding your y common expression in the landscape of self improvement. But i do think it pays to ask why you want to achieve that goal and often. When it's should it's it's not always your goal. I remember for a long time that the fact is that. I want to lose weight. I want to lose weight is because a lot of people who weren't me. We're telling me i should lose what you should lose weight and it was a negative so as i really i should. I should lose weight earn. It wasn't my goal. My goal looks like how it sounded. I had to take a look back and really see what my goal was. And if you if you take a step back from it and you've asked whether it's your goal while you want it. Then we i guess the next thing to ask yourself is if you're prepared to do more than you're already doing to achieve it

The Truth Behind Launching Companies with Vinnie Tortorich

"Vinnie ceo. What's up to fire nation and sheer something interesting about yourself. That most people don't know hello fire. Nation graft to be back john. Thanks for having me on. Wow something most people don't know. Well here's a deal. I'm health and fitness expert and most people have been into ultra cycling ultra vents in holding. So oddly enough. I love to exercise and of course i eat right and take care of my health. So people would think. Oh well fitness is the most important thing to this guy and fitness may be well. It's number one bay but it may have a rival Financial health has always been as important to me. You know just watching my money watching where goes protecting it. Investing it myself not needing it in the hands of other people. So i look at at financial fitness as long as much or more than i do my own physical fitness. I love hearing that for sure. And i mean we actually had a really fun chat before i hit the record button here where both myself and vinnie fire nation. We escaped california. We're not talking about the fires we're talking about the insane taxes which by the way vinnie. I don't know if you're so tracking this but they're raising state taxes to sixteen point five percent there that's just state taxes which is absolutely mind blowing. The only problem. I have with vinny to be honest with you. Fire nation is that he stopped about twelve hundred miles to short he. He needs to get into a boat even a canoe paddle out into the atlantic. Come a little self from virginia vinnie. Angle yourself down towards the equator. Don't stop to you. Hit puerto rico and come join the world of four percent my man come on you know what we actually talk about because you know my wife is european so i could be anywhere in the world. That has a computer. If i can run a computer could be anywhere in the world and it felt so good leaving california and going to a quote unquote normal state. But we've talked about it. You know. I keep going buddy. John says that guy's killing. Okay let me just let me just say this. This is what i want to happen. I want you and your wife to come down. Visit me for a weekend. And i will blow your minds with beauty. Amazingness of the islands and by the way from saint joe from from san juan international airport. We have direct flights to germany to portugal. Talking five hours in the air. You're in europe. It's absolutely unbelievable. So that's for another time but the invitations always there have any i would love to host here love to. I wanna talk right now about you and starting companies because a lot of people a lot of people in fire nation included. They think that they need to go directly to outside investors to go to venture capital to raise all of this money before they even think about starting a company but you started a very successful. Vitamin company was zero outside investors. Talk to us about that. How did you pull that off. Yeah i think you have my partner. Andy schreiber the vitamin business on the show at some point and what had happened was the whole time. I was in california to reason i went. There was to start up businesses. And every time i had a great idea it turned out. Man made like two or three pennies on a dollar. Because when you're borrowing someone else's money are you have these investors. They're taking the big financial. Had a big chance. Even though you ll invented something they walked lion's share out it and when you go to a bank and beg a bank for money first off you have to have a like a whole business plan written out in the whole thing. And i every time i went to a bank and a wanted to start a vitamin company. There were like who are you. And why should we trust you with my with my plan in place. They were like yeah. We don't think so. And so that's how that whole thing started I got lucky that that was a lucky move in my life. I wrote book. And i it. The book is called fitness confidential. And the book a year. How they say you should dance like no one is looking yeah. I wrote a book as if no one was going to have anything and everything that i wanted to put it in a book went into that buck and it turned out that it was this weird colossal success

"So that had to sting a little bit for Billy Packer beating his his squad right there but Saint Joe's ones eighty four eighty and and that's it thank you Chris Paul probably had as he was a freshman at that point probably had his worst game of his career there he had thirteen points but it took a lot of shots and did I get four shot attempts in the entire first half of what more than twelve minutes without a basket in a game it makes two field goals all game is that you know you did for the most part take care of business at the line but yeah really passive game you would Tyrone barley shutting down your barley yeah who doesn't get any hype it's all the latte west junior Nelson but he he deserves a lot of props in that game he got big minutes because Brian Rosenfeld trouble right early on and and Pat Carroll as you heard in a lot of those cuts was was a real key to that team to hit a lot of big shots for them really you know throughout that season and it was good player for St Joe's realize is brother end up playing in the NBA Matt who played at Notre Dame but Pat was a really good college basketball player yeah both teams shot fifty percent from three but just wait miss like a ton of them when they matter yeah and in Saint Joe's was down one at the half it was thirty eight thirty seven at the half mmhm sell the they they come back to win that of course they advance sad the way it ended that you know in in the elite eight they lose the Oklahoma state of all that but it was just dumb walk it's sort of bounce off a guy's foot rolled right to John Lucas and he knocks at the retail which was unfortunate that was after Carol hits a three to put St Joe's up with twenty nine point nine seconds left to give St Joe's a one point lead Lucas the third hits at the rate Jim here it's a pretty good luck and can't get a shot at it they were on it yeah I was a little bit short so that's how they ended up losing two best players this game for Wakker Justin gray and descent Ellie Williams Erik Williams Erik Williams and both of them they they basically go right from this game to Europe yeah I don't really have any any NBA experience interesting to to Saint Joe's guys doing Jones and John Bryant are current and secure staff yeah you you you if you look at at the six ever play again look right behind Brett brown and you've you've you could see them and I think John bright may now be in the on the end up in the you know on the first batch now with yes lying out of there yep I think ESL yeah they're both of those guys it is interesting of course John Bryant fame of el Gouna gate with John Cheney all right he's the illegal screens a ended up and yeah Cheney put enforcer hands in the air and it started a whole thing but John Bryant was the guy went up I thought broke his hand right brokers aren't on on one of those site one of those place so yes Saint Joe's unbelievable game against Wake Forest they wanted eighty four eighty and that raise them up at that point to thirty and one on the season and that it would and you know sort of certain certainly the next week it would end all right so we help guide I was like you know you know his own way Billy Packer kinda gets validated because not all the state when's it but also in there the point spread was their favorite in that game I have ever there's a lot of outrage about that till it's like this out just you know this but the side that you think it's for the outrage tonight now it's unbelievable all right so let's move on so we're gonna fast for twelve years later to twenty sixteen to Villanova Villanova a team that it hadn't won a national championship since nineteen eighty five and you know what it was was last in the final four N. D. two thousand nine season but this team you know certainly looked like it had a lot of potential for sure and but they were taking on a Kansas team and I do realize this till I started you know digging around a little bit you realize what coming into this game like Kansas had won seventeen straight leading and I came there were the highest in the country Frank Mason was in the Naismith running I don't know who won it that year but use I remember him he had a tremendous season yeah Kansas was the number one overall seed noble was until people tend to forget that but they're all Seton hall in the big east they had a chance to to go through Wells Fargo center correct they lost the big east champs of yes M. which made me put a lot of doubt in people's minds you know whatever the case may be but you know and we've come to seen this to see this in years get a sense that as well J. right flat out owns bill self he owns and even this year yeah I mean the the the only the only time I think he beat him was last season right the previous the nineteenth season I the cameras one there in a tight one the year Kansas one at all seven oh wait wait yeah they're Chalmers Chalmers here they beat Villanova Sweet Sixteen right right but for the most part Jay's really kind of taking its own cell yeah I mean this isn't over team that I had a lot of adapt to it a lot of good players the eighteen team certainly had some of the some carryovers from that team but you know you had the Josh charts you had the Jaylen Brunson as a youngster are you certainly have some guys who could play on those teams for sure and Kansas right unbelievable the entire season so let's let's give you a little taste of that contest Villanova Kansas a lead eight to advance to the final four so a match up of a one seat against it to see where we go these teams met two years ago in the Bahamas it was a nail biter came down that was shot by RGB oculata Samus double tops it is and the next it was this this is the biggest tournament this Richard they can believe them take a he is lane one to see he does he does it very well the second chances led by four at sixteen to twelve point thirteen to nothing run for Villanova Mason blows right by it feeds the I'm ready this is absolutely vital to keep hands is once Hey it's Jenkins your more than first thriller not used to guarding a guy like ticket didnt close out made a pay as you see the lowest first half point total for Kansas the entire season the fence doing a good job he said the grant C. it is a big kiss so there's a chance with a three point play brings it back up to five that's a new fashion three the largest deficit of two billion over five it was excellent support which has to put in a lot of different business models the Liverpool street six first of all the good hands and said it's largest lead of and then although the reels off seven straight with the three is the yards with the two once the three it's the he is control twenty two seconds ago the big push again quickly get to the rim you might get a kick out of three message again takes it inside so that was once he's done that tonight now the one with fifty seconds here's Mason bridges is on a six a little these kids step with the regulation they have had this is the key one now hello that is a lot of guys playing well Jim bridges on the floor spectacular seldom does it all the way down well you can just I mean the president was I just love everything about this.

threw her support behind the former vice president saying quote I believe in joke we need a leader who really does care about the people and who can therefore unify the people and I believe Joe can do that and with us right now was ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts Steve what a difference a week makes it did you anticipate Joe Biden picking up this mode the momentum this quickly no I have not I don't think anybody did I I think what we're what we're seeing though is a fascinating phenomena based on one word and that word is fear it's fear of Donald Trump and fear of Bernie Sanders Joe Biden has not been reborn as some useful charismatics move talking energetic candidates Joe Biden today is still the same Joe Biden that people have a lot of doubts about two weeks ago two months ago two years ago the difference is that Democrats have so desperate so frantic to find somebody who can beat Donald Trump that they decided that day either as a group and individually as voters and as candidates they'll camel Harris being an example of of having to rally around somebody and then choosing between Biden and Sanders the fear of Bernie Sanders is pulling the party too far to the left so there's a lot of energy around the Biden candidacy right now but in my view it's largely negative energy it's driven by fear it's driven by desperation there are not a lot of Democrats even this morning jumping up and down in Saint Joe Biden's gonna be a great candidate a great president but this negative energy is very powerful and that's what's driving this trend do you think it's now his to lose or is it too early to say that definitely has to lose end up and I think it's gonna be very difficult for Bernie Sanders to rebound here the one variable of course the one no wild card is by himself as I say he has not been report he's still the guy who can show astounding lapses of judgment he's still the guy who could make gaffes he's still the guy who can show his age very clearly he's still the guy who can appear fumbling and uncertain and in debates with Bernie Sanders and interviews it's still entirely possible for him to make damaging mistakes I think a lot of Democrats even if they rally around by they're holding their breath and hoping that Biden will get its act together and I've seen some signs a few signs of Byton improving on the stop I think he's shown a little bit more energy I think the campaign line about I'm the candidate of those who have been left behind it counted out is a defective and powerful line really echoes of a bill to written of nineteen ninety two the comeback kid although Biden's hardly a kid he's more the comeback teaser than the comeback kid and also this line of of of appealing to the concepts of dignity and civility and normalcy I think they provide a fairly stark contrast to the president who's in the oval office now but Biden is still Biden it was all of his flaws but at this point he's the Democrats best hope and it's gonna be very difficult for Sanders to capture Steve thanks for your thoughts again this morning ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts it's also worth noting that this morning one of the former How I Built This

Panera Bread/Au Bon Pain: Ron Shaich (2018)

"Ron Shake isn't a household name like you say Howard Schultz but you could argue that. What Howard Schultz did for coughing Ron shake did for cheddar broccoli soup or the SEO cheese he's Bagel because like Howard? Ron Wasn't just focused on product. He was interested in creating a space of place where people could hang out for a long time. Maybe even have a PTA meeting or social gathering and really linger over that Bagel or cup soup. This is the famous third-place concept concept that both Howard Schultz and Ron shake wanted to tap into in. That's how Panera became one of the fastest growing restaurant chains in the world. In fact if you've invested the seven thousand dollars in Pinera stock in nineteen ninety nine. You'd be sitting on more than half a million dollars by two two thousand seventeen now. The thing is if you met Ron shake say in high school. This is not the path you've predicted for him. Ron Wasn't even interested in business. Is Passion was politics. His parents were raging liberals and Ron grew up going to rallies and volunteering on campaigns. All over New Jersey eventually went to Clark University where naturally he majored in politics and he was quickly elected to student government. And that could have been Ron's life life except for one day when something happened to Ron and a group of friends something kind of small but something that when you look back on it probably probably changed his entire life. Yeah so we. We were in a local convenience store called store. Twenty four cross the street from the main entrance to the Clark campus and they accused US shoplifting and tossed us out cecily guys just being rowdy earnings or wild. No we were shopping but I came back to campus episode and I was in my dorm with a couple of friends and I said you know. Why are we shopping there? How they can they treat us like this? What supports that store? We said what do we need what we can we can do this ourselves. We can have our own convenience store and I said you know this isn't going to be that hard. Let's go do it. And we approach the university. They weren't so keen on this but I moved the question to student body They voted in support of it and I basically agreed to spend that summer between my sophomore and junior here opening this convenience store guy. Wow So. What'd you guys Sal We sold Everything from drinks to Munchies two cookies and candy and you know our assistant manager would come to my apartment at five in the morning and we actually would go to this deep discount supermarket and buy I don't know ten or fifteen baskets full of merchandise that we'd stocked the store with and We hired twenty or thirty different students to work there. I will be very franken. Saint Joe's more interested in that store than when I was in my own academically. And and your guy who's all still focused on public policy in government but I guess this it was Kinda cool you liked. He kind of liked doing business running a business. Yeah and and you know. I didn't see myself as that kind of guy and it took me a wile to make sense of that but in so many ways running a business is no different than campaign in fact a campaign is a the business that that essentially has one day in which it ends a business campaign that goes on and never ends so at this point in his life. Ron Wasn't quite sure what he wanted to do. Business or politics but people around him saw how how much he loved running that convenience store and a lot of people said. Hey why don't you get an MBA. So Ron did he enrol at Harvard. Business School in Nineteen seventy six. And when he finished unlike a lot of his classmates who went into banking or finance ron decided to go into retail and he took a job in the mid west and a place called held the original cookie company. Twenty stores in shopping malls We grew it to about one hundred and twenty five. I took the job as the third year of the NBA. What I mean by that is I took a job as a district manager? Basically Iran ten or fifteen of these cookie stores half the United States and I spent went My time running around the country and I ended up opening thousands of these cookie stores around the country so as certain point you're learning about the cookie business I guess and then at a certain point you get this idea like hey I can do this myself. I can have my own cookie store yes and and I can literally remember traveling Cross Indiana. I'm away to Fort Wayne Dope a new cookie store and it hit me and I said why are we opening this in a Mav. There's a huge opportunity open these in in an urban setting. Why don't we open one and I can remember going to my boss? I remember him taking me to meet. Beat the CEO of the company. Said I wanNA open an urban cookie. Store looks him and he says we don't do that here. We Open Mall based retail units. I thought to myself well. If you're not GONNA do it. I'd like to go do it. Why shouldn't we and I'm the Kinda guy by Sam going to do it? I want to go do it and it led led me to actually resigning my job and I moved back to Boston and I started looking for real estate and the reality was. Nobody would Li space for cookies. Find any sir for cookie store because they thought it wouldn't make enough money to pay the rent. 'cause I had no credibility. Yeah I had no real money I had you know no balance sheet to sign a lease and so I went to my dad and I said I I want my inheritance. Whatever it's going to be I want the opportunity to use it and I had about twenty five thousand dollars Ned Essentially let me. He gave me seventy five thousand dollars and that one hundred thousand dollars became the GRUB stake the equity. That allowed us to build that. I four hundred square-foot cookie store. Wow in downtown Boston. What did you name the store? We named it the cookie jar and I can remember. We took the toll house recipe. Right it off the bag. I bought a small mixer and I would pass out cookies in front of the stories that we were building. It and I'd start to adjust the recipe based on what I learned talking to customers and and you were the baker. You were making cookies yourself. Yeah we opened. There were three employees. I made it was me and to folks I will never forget at that day. It just seemed like people never stopped walking a coming in and purchase fifty thousand people day going by and I'll never forget it. I got to the end of the day walking past or foot traffic. Yeah but I got to the end of that at first afternoon. We opened one o'clock guide and by six we closed and my back was hurting. Oh and legs were hurting. And I can't in the money and I I realize we only brought in four hundred dollars. I mean you forget when we talk about business what it is the self the four hundred batches of cookies buck each and the amount of energy and work that goes into

Why Metabolism Declines With Age (And How to Reverse It!)

"At blog at l._A.. Fitness Dot Com so what is metabolism exactly well scientifically. You'd call it collectively all the chemical reactions that take place in the body so a metabolic rate would be the rate at which it you those processes are happening so we in terms of what someone would equate that to would be like in calories per day we think of a metabolic rate as calories per day but there are components of it. It's a breakdown are you. I'm curious to know what those are. The biggest one is called resting metabolic rate and so that is just as we're doing here. We are awake and we're sitting so that is all the energy you need to breathe your heart to go <hes> organs to function and to be awake if if you were you know comatose we'd call it basil but really everybody's pretty much awake during the day so we call that resting and that comprises <music> at least seventy percent of your total energy output then there's about a quarter and had various per person but as about a quarter that is the <hes> physical activity component and just because you spend and thirty minute walking and I walk with you for thirty minutes. WE'RE GONNA burn different calories so that varies by person because of their body composition and training level and etc and then there's this tiny little sliver called called and you'll like this. I'm curious mic effective food so there's an actual energy cost to breaking down of processing digesting transporting up taking that your food so if you've ever heard that Oh celery is negative calories. That's the concept that it comes from is like for the three calories. You've got nets talk. You actually live hinder. Bring you down so their components to metabolism cabbalism <hes>. There's three main components right. Isn't that kind of work coury comes from like the that's how they determine how many calories are in food. They will have to look Bernard or something they basically to see how much energy we do. We need to expend to break this thing down Tom exactly and and even the term calorie has to do with heat generation right yeah go into the definition. Don't ask interesting well. At what age does metabolism start slowing down. I've already passed that point is it starts at about thirty but I'd say that it becomes more evidence probably <hes> for women at around fifty in fermented like forty okay so give or take obviously for for different the people it's going to be at different times. Are there ways to reverse that or like. Stop it from happening. You can tell Kansas has been thinking about this for a couple of weeks. You have a birthday recently trying a to stop the aging process in general Debbie. Most of the decline that that comes with age actually has to do with a decline in lean body mass so <hes> the weight gain that people see Middle Age has less to do with the decrease in their metabolism and probably just more to do with sedentary lifestyle and getting too many calories for where they're at okay so that's why it kind of gets. More important that you do start finding ways to exercise the older you get and not just exercise because sometimes that you know the whole concept of okay get my shoes on. Get this special outfit on can sweat in and then spend the specific amount of time in a specific place doing a certain thing. It's physical activity so if I thought if I added up all the things I did when I was young I go. I go to the dog park. I watched my dog. I run with him. Sometimes from end to end I see the other dog parents and they're sitting in the Shays as they're looking at their cell phones I go to the playground at the park and it's the same thing you know. All these kids are climbing on the structures in the running around there giggling and their tagging and the parents are watching so I think we become very much <unk> spectators as we get older and just less participating in physical activity. Oh man that cut deep is like spectators in life. You'll participate in life. Never stolen pass you by Wynn is the last time when the last time you you wrote a bike or walked to the grocery store. Well I get to items that you could carry. I talked to the grocery store almost on a daily basis good for you good for you can't as well tasers. There's this elderly gentleman in my neighborhood that I see of religiously on on a daily basis. He looks like a sweet little Frenchman with his cap and he carries his bag. You know that he gets every day. He's lean you know now. He's he's not a pat on any extra pounds there and I think you know the nature of US driving everywhere contributes not that affects your metabolic rate. I'm just saying that the lack of physical activity as we age compounds pounds the fact that we have less lean body mass and we're not using that quarter of our capacity to affect our calorie burn right so are there ways that you can help increase your metabolism just kind of physical activity well and physical activities the best one because if we say it's the metabolism is all the chemical reactions going on so then you want to build more muscle and you went to burn more fuel so really really what are the two things oh well that's resistance exercise to build muscle and it's the cardio or endurance type exercise to burn more fat. Those are really the big primary things <hes> in order to retain lean body mass and keep your metabolism up and having more muscle on your body you'll just start burning more calories at rest right and so little bit yes it's less than you would think and I don't mean to Papu anybody's you know strength training goals a but when they actually equate the amount of calories burned per pound okay gaining five pounds of muscle is like burning fifty calories a day right another fifty okay oh well if I eat twenty I five hundred fifties like a dry and it's not much but if you were to stop eating something that had fifty calories of value every day I don't know like two pieces of candy or something then after a year you drop five pounds. Fifty calories now makes oh yeah if I could save myself five pounds a year. That would be great. You know it's interesting with metabolism. It makes me like the human body is amazing like I've read about some things where you can over the course of the year. Our bodies are so good at kind of just understanding what we really need I guess and so sometimes you can be within like maybe only gain like a pound but that could be like thirty five hundred calories off or something of what you're you. You really needed that year technically and it seems like it's so amazing over the distance of time like how we kind of naturally equilibrate that way so I could see like we're fifty calories with some extra muscle could make a difference when it's compounded like that and if you have more fat mass it does not play as well. No <hes> fat is metabolic -Ly Different. You know it's not it's not being contracted like skeletal muscle and your body wants to as you said have more homeo- stays ace it wants. It almost wants to stay where it's at so if you've gained ten fifteen twenty pounds over the last couple of decades well your body now wants to maintain where it's at now present rain not where you were and so that I think in fact makes it. Harder tougher keeping keeping weight gain at bay or trying to lose weight once. You've got it right yeah right so it's probably better if you can catch it early start early. Now that you know around what would you say thirty search to slow down so knowing like okay when you get into that mode like bone. Is that the same with bone health to like it starts to peak bone mass is probably in your late twenties or by the time you're thirtyish then really what we're all doing is is trying to forestall the rate of bone loss from getting you know to osteoporotic levels and in your bones you've always got building and breaking down going on so you're just trying to keep that building ahead of the breakdown right right so just try and catch it early jump into the gym early start eating better earlier yeah. That's the idea is there even a way to measure your metabolism. It doesn't seem as simple as like stubby on the scale to measure you know your weight or B._M._i.. It's impossible and like like is that something important that people should know well. There's a couple of different ways to do it but I think if someone needs to count calories if they just don't have an idea or there's a certain plan they WANNA fall. It's a certain calorie level. Yes you could approximate it with an equation. There's a couple you know scientifically valid equate equations like Mifflin Saint Joe or Iron Jones and they take your age your gender your height your body weight and then on top top of that. You're adding your physical activity. Those even have some variants and margins of error like fifteen percent <hes> but you could get it measured by like you said Andrew <hes> calories and food. That's burning it so so we call that a calorie meter chamber so indirect Calorie Mitri <hes> is one way to measure a metabolism or incentives barometer die said that right incentive speranza train. Oh Yeah so basically you you could do something but it's like breathing into a snorkel and it's not very or the I've read about. There's some like intense ones where you're like in a room for like a day or something and they're like pulling the I like not pulling the oxygen. That sounds terrible but it's it's. It's a very clinical medical thing but it's like it's not gonNA walk in and do a laboratory coach at cal State Long Beach because you were doing some plenty the of something and I even sat in one of those body composition egg chambers forgot the name of at this point sorry but <hes> you know the laboratory setting is really need but it's not practical hydrostatics wing in dunk tank. When's the last time I actually physically saw a dunk tank right now right and do you even need to be that precise with your again? Only if you're going to have a caloric value of what you're eating to match it with right so <hes> if you've been gaining weight or you want to prevent weight gain than burn more calories and eat less right and if for some reason someone is like wow I just can't keep up my you know I keep losing weight or you know I still am so thin then. It's like your need to on more of what you eat counting. Them is just labeling it. I mean it doesn't right. It's always one of those two factors either. You're not burning enough or you're not or you're not you're eating too much or it's the opposite doc yeah. "Here's some comments that you made based on common you and I made last night. I really really just casually slipped. His in that. I wou for all big five teams. The reason why I brought it up is because I'm openly rooting for any big five team to beat Villanova in his city series game because the city series just doesn't matter anymore anyway for so many of you listening it doesn't matter to begin with. But if you're like me, and you grew up where to city series. Didn't mean a lot those big five battles. He's been rendered rather pointless. When one team hasn't lost a game in six stinking years six years. But now the big common I made is that I need Nova to lose a game. So hopefully, the city series games will start meeting something again. But that's not the comment that I got a lotta Email over the comment. I made about I root for all big five teams any big team gets into tournament. At the end of the year. I'm rooting for all five of them. Now, if they face off against each other, then I kind of make up my mind who I'm rooting for then, but I'll root for a big fight team. It was that casual lead in comment to the important comment at stoke the fires as always is just amazing. How many people out there? Do not like Villanova. Under any circumstances. I used to think it was a Saint Joe Villanova thing. But it's not and. I gotta tell you. I. I don't get it anymore. To me, Jay writes. Best coach in the country. He's a quality guys had nice guy. Right. I mean, everything about J righty. I know him personally a little bit. I told you this before I know his parents very well. He's a nice guy. And he's I'm had him on as a guest many times. He's funny on top of it when need be. Did team said he used one with two national championships? He is one. Was like really bad ache. On any of those teams. No, there's not I don't. It's unbelievable. Trade for that school runs deep. Now. Obviously you're Villanova fan. It doesn't apply to you whatsoever. But let's how can I put this? Their Saint Joe hawks the temple out. I'll take those two teams Mike, do you agree or disagree? With the statement. I'm about to make. The Saint Joe hawks in temple AL's don't have nearly the amount of. Haters Villanova has it's up the charge. It's like Saint Joe's has are out saying Joe fans, don't like no one over. But that's not my one. I'm asking you. Do you feel like there's just a lot of people in this town where you you even bring up the Saint Joe hoax makes your blood boil even bring up the temple is it makes the blood boil, but you bring up going over people that just can't stand him. I think if you throw out that question for the next your next four shows prompted anyone who's a Saint Joe hawker temple L hater to call in. You'd get zero calls. Yeah. It but not a whole now. I get it. No. I don't get to make an untrue statement there the richest other five, but then Alex are pretty close now. But that would be paying. Okay. That would be Penn. I I'm pretty sure I think the hawks in the same zip code. They are Saint Joseph gotten really really expensive wall. Colleges aren't my opinion. But compared to temple which Sal. I'm just saying I. It runs deep. It really does run show deep, and if you don't dislike Boehner, and I'm not going to spend a lot of time talking about this. I'm just recapping last night's show. Even if you don't hate Villanova. They virtually did nothing. Fan base do championships. You wouldn't think to championships would have resulted and a lot of more Villanova fans in his area. And I don't say it's very bizarre. I can't quite put my finger on it. I just can't not even just fans. I don't even feel like more people are watching their games because your best and you can watch a game without. Being you know being attached to Villanova. You can just watch to see what wins, and I don't even think like if Villanova plays a close game. I don't think anyone's talking about it. I had a guide creek word this week. It somehow came up. I'm not even sure why. And he said, well, you know, it all goes back to rally breaking up the big five at where it all started. And I'm a I grew up with distinct and big five and telling you. That was a very difficult danced at Villanova had to. Step two because when they joined the big east when biggie started, and there's a great documented in the big east. Nobody knew that it was going to become net. You you would have had to been in idiot an idiot to go. Well, you know what I'm sorry. I got loyal to LaSalle. Yeah. You would have had to be when you know that whole big east thing exploded, and you're selling twenty thousand seats, you know, not just a Madison Square Garden but down at the arena here in town and their spectrum got I used to love going bone over Georgetown games and whatnot down there. Anyway, it's it's not just like if rally didn't do it. Then Jerry would have done it. So there's nothing to do with who did it at the time. I can't even quite put a finger on I guess, his kissed main lying like, I know Saint Joe's is kinda Saint Joe's is just as preppy. I think but they're not because they're where they're situated. There's a seven eleven practically two blocks away. I don't think people think seven elevens when they take the Villanova area. I don't even know if there is one individual nowehre sanctions if. Like the way. Soda taxes? Now, you can be on one side of campus need to pay like two fifty percent across the street. It's you save like a dollar. That's what it is. I got. A couple emails from people. Town me to shut the bleep up to quote, Jan Goran. About these ten doctors that Mark full supposedly. I don't believe it supposedly visited to finally end up with that diagnosis that he didn't. And a couple of people Email me and go big daddy. You of all people who have had so many various ailments, three back surgeries. No, the other big thing. I add, blah, blah, blah. But I never I first of all with the big sea thing that I had I never even shopped around. I I went to campus in doctor because I fan, and I had it. Why was getting back surgery at Jefferson? I I never have gone to not can even for this equilibrium problem. Then I've been experiencing this year. I have gone and maybe four different doctors to try to find out. What's going on with that? But now can okay not for the same ailment. It's. I know anybody's ever going to ten different doctors for anything anything at all. That's why it's so incredulous to me, and I'm older, and I have friends I have friends who've passed on I friends who've had all kinds of major illnesses. Not Tang titans. Are you number for the same specific thing? Now the words he's trying to find out. What's wrong with his shoulder? And he went to ten chess on this recent thing, right? And that's I count on the trip to Kentucky last year. Correct. You're right. Jason this recent run. That's why it's completely unbelievable. So completely or these people reaching out to you like acting like this is legitimate injuries at the. I think it's just people that there's always going to be fair amount of people that we'll get a hold of you because they want to hear a host be wrong about I can't put my finger on it. But whatever. Story that a Vince told that the new kind of phone might be out. It's going to be able to fold up into a much smaller phone, but who would unfold and you'd have like a a big big screen. "Saint Joe were hit by several feet of storm surge that smashed through windows and brick walls. But just twenty miles away old homes and a very historic part of the city in that area survived largely intact. Facebook says the FBI is investigating a major security breach of its service. But the company says they've been asked not to discuss who may be behind the attack that suggests Facebook may know who is behind it. We are all checking our 4._0._1._K's right now. I'm not looking what happened this week on Wall Street boy, Heather long reports on the economy for the Washington Post and joins us now on the KOMO news line. Okay. Heather it's been a rough week. I'm glad we're nearing the end of this trading week as many investors are what what set this all off. And what has most worried? Yeah. That's a great question. Well, the good news is it's all up today. At least the latest check. I'm looking at it right now with the Dow up about one seventy five is we're heading into the closed. So I mean, there's a couple of things that triggered this. But the most important question is, you know, investors were looking around saying look were things have been very very good. The last few months for American companies were were looking at twenty five percent earnings growth, but just phenomenal number, but they were looking around and saying, wait a minute. What about the future is twenty nineteen really going to be anywhere near that? Good. And so we were just seeing a little bit of a reevaluation of of how strong the economy and how strong. US companies earnings really are going to be in the next couple of months. Heather what's the conventional wisdom right now are people looking at this thing, we're headed for a recession or more of an economic slowdown. There's a difference obviously between the two huge difference. That's a good point. No almost no one sane recession tomorrow or even recession in January or February. So it's not like they're going to be in some deep downturn. Anytime soon what we are for a lot of people are forecasting is a bit of a slow down. So almost tapping the brakes a little bit here. So this year great year phenomenal year probably going to be around three percent growth for the US economy. We haven't had that kind of growth in a long long time over a decade, then next year a lot of people are projecting two point five percent. So again, that's still pretty good. It's better than two percent that we were seeing for much of the end recovery and our President Obama. And but after that it gets a little. Dicey. We'll have the text of the tax cuts the affects of the extra government spending. That's going away at the same time. You've got higher interest rates. You've got higher energy costs. You've got rising wages, you got a stronger dollar. So you just have a number of factors that are going to chip away at that growth. And that's why some people are saying a recession could be on the table for twenty twenty. We're talking to Heather long who writes for the economy for the Washington Post. So we're all watching the impact on our 4._0._1._K's. Rick is I'm not looking at my numbers. I just got older. So it makes you feel like you wanna pull back to go into more, you know, conservative stocks and rain that perform in is that best advisor, or what are what are people saying? It really depends on your age. I was an event this morning with some top Morgan Stanley, folks. And they were saying just what you're saying that they're telling their clients their top investor clients to to be a little bit more conservative as they head into twenty nineteen. You know, that doesn't mean that you pull everything out of the market entirely that might meet a small chain of shifting some money from stocks into bonds as as we move forward from here again. Nobody's sitting here thinking, oh, you know, this is going to be some major crash, but you're sitting here having to ask yourself. What's the catalyst for growth going forward? What's the catalyst for those profits to stay high? And that that's not as obvious right now is it was a couple of months ago when those tax cuts were kicking in everything was firing on all cylinders Heather along with the Washington Post. You can read more online at Washington Post dot com can't help. But think about how long it took to recover after two thousand eight I think that's what's going through. Everybody's mind. Okay. Time. For your propel insurance money update at twelve twenty and has Heather mentioned were in a lot better shape. Today nearing the close of the trading week. We see the NASDAQ up one hundred twenty four points at seventy four fifty three. The Dow is up one hundred fifty three at twenty five thousand two hundred six and some local stocks have been recovering today Amazon's up fifty four points, but a ways to go down to seventeen seventy three this week. Global money story. Business leaders around the world are reassessing their ties with Saudi Arabia stoking pressure on the Gulf kingdom to explain what happened to a dissident writer who disappeared after visiting its consulate and Instanbul British billionaire, Richard Branson today suspending business links with Saudi Arabia money news at twenty and fifty past every hour here on KOMO standby. "Cloudy in Boston warming up to seventy five downtown seventy north and west of the city a flash flood watches in effect through late tonight for the city and suburbs have through tomorrow morning along the south coast and Cape. Traffic and weather together coming up, I'm Garowe Gopi. WBZ news. Our top story at this hour, thousands of national guard troops law enforcement and medical teams are working their way into damage communities to search for survivors in the immediate aftermath of hurricane. Michael what authorities don't want her evacuees trying to come back to check on their property people along the Gulf Coast and Florida panhandle are looking over the devastation caused by. Now. Tropical storm, Michael at least two people are confirmed dead. This is Florida governor Rick Scott, just hurricane was an absolute monster and the damage left in its wake is still yet to be fully. Understood CBS's, Omar Villafranca is surveying the damage important port Saint Joe Florida at least days possibly. Weeks before any power is going to be turned on in this area. Getting around port. Saint Joe is an adventure in itself. And what we found is not only big trees in the way roads completely washed out. We were caravanning to try to get into this part of port Saint Joe. There was another section where the road was gone about. Fifteen feet of road was gone dropped off into a bridge. Michael made landfall in Mexico Beach, Florida as a massive hurricane packing. Winds of one hundred fifty five miles per hour just shy of a category five ginger Zee in Mexico Beach, Florida is demolished. I mean that is the best for us. We just so mayor we woke up this morning. Having only heard volunteers point thrills since pass and the sound is on indeed helicopter video shows most homes and businesses all but demolished though, some larger buildings are still standing utilities in the hardest. "I'm Gary McNamara along with Eric Harley. Eight six six ninety redeye meteorologist Tom HALE joins us right now to get get us caught up on hurricane Michael. Good morning. Tom. Good morning. How are you guys doing doing? Well, what do we know about Michael in the current conditions? And what we expect over the next twelve to twenty four hours. Well, I I wish I could say that this is going to be a pretty picture, but it's not I am encouraged by a number of the reports that have indicated a lot of people have evacuated Panama City also down all the way through Saint Saint Joe and app Appalachia cola, and that southern point then, of course, from their up to Tallahassee now folks in Tallahassee I some of them have been boarding up and all that, but what we can expect this really simple right now it is a category. Three hurricane. That means sustained winds at one hundred and twenty five miles an hour hand for those of you who are kinda geeky you can write this down. The minimum pressure is nine forty seven nine forty seven militaires. And it's moving to the north at at twelve miles an hour right now, it is two hundred and twenty miles to the south south west of Panama City now, it's an northerly direction. So for it to actually hit the target which right now is estimated between Panama City and the tip of Appalachia cola. It's gonna have to make a little bit of a right turn. And so in simple terms, what people are going to expect is is some significant whether that they have not seen in their lifetime. Well, it's not totally fair to say that. Well, no, I guess it really is because I expected in the next advisory to go up five or six miles an hour. It goes up six miles an hour. It will qualifies a category four hurricane and a category. Four hurricane hitting this post. According to the national weather service. Out of Tallahassee would be the strongest hurricane on record to hit the Florida, panhandle coastline. Yeah. So yeah. And and that's ever. That's the strongest on record. Yeah. We talked earlier that you know, Camille down the coast a little bit in the category. Five hitting in sixty nine that just devastated that that that part? So you have an idea of what wins, and that's the point. When you talk about you know, you get to a category of up for hurricane. You're talking about winds over one hundred thirty one miles an hour. That's a little different than maybe you're a hurricane one. Or you may have eighty mile an hour winds and five mile an hour winds. It's a completely different ballgame. Right. Exactly. And when we get to the category three it changes, we call it a major hurricane a category. One and two are not major hurricanes, but they're still I mean, we saw a category to Florence. It was a category three briefly, but we saw Florence come in. And you know, we did coverage here on Red Eye Radio for four days with Lawrence, and that puppy just hung along the coastline. This is not going to be the case here by tomorrow. As this moves its way out of here. It's winds will be affecting the Florida and south and North Carolina shoreline. And in fact, the last time there was a storm of that kind of situation that came through with Kate and nineteen eighty five and in Cates case Kate at the same time. It's wins wrapping around the giant Winfield were causing storms and tornadoes along the Carolinas and the Carolinas have got a pretty good chance of of multiple tornadoes associated with this. And and you know, anyone in this entire area of the big bend. And the panhandle are are going to basically relate to cake, which happened to be in nineteen eighty five. But this is gonna blow cattle the water Tom in terms of the the danger coming ashore because I think a lot of people may be looking at. You know, the eye coming ashore. But I mean that where the danger in the potentially life threatening situation start. What is that timeline where is that window, and what should we expect during that time line? Okay. When it comes to the timeline on what you should expect by tomorrow morning. It's still should be offshore. And it will be probably still a category three but darn close to category. Four I wouldn't be shocked if in the next advisory in in in one hour from now may be upgraded, but by Wednesday evening, it should be onshore. And so that would be in line with Tallahassee would be coming across Tallahassee by Thursday evening. It should be entering the Carolina and cutting right across the middle of the Carolinas. And so the eastern side of.
