"Now, how did Claire come about to hear about Saint Francis? Obviously, when you hear Saint Francis of assisi, saint Clare of assisi, what's the connection there, sister? Well, they live, you know, they live as neighbors, basically. It's just up a short street up. From one house to the other from Frances is also declares house. Everyone in town knew Frances because he was such an incredible entertainer. This guy had the ability to sing. He had the ability to act. He could make up acts on the spur of the moment. He was just incredibly talented. He dazzled the Pope. You know, the Pope didn't give the Franciscan order permission to exist because they had a good rule. Because they didn't. It was a tough one. The Pope heard Francis preach. And he was amazed. I mean, he just kind of gave them permission to do. And they weren't given permission to do church preaching. They were given permission to do preaching in the town square. And this was basically the entertainment of the Middle Ages, so the Pope saw that he was good. He put on great dramas. We have he did the whole nativity. I mean, he knew how to connect the sun was basically a religious play. And we know that because Francis, when he's writing the second act of that, basically, he gave the brothers directions as far as how to perform it. So Francis is very talented in those ways. So Claire obviously being a woman of a CZ and loving religious art and loving religious drama and anything religious. Had contact with Francis in that way, Francis was not a quiet soul. So in a small town of assisi, declare definitely knew of Francis. However, Claire was a woman known for her spirituality in her own right before Frances came on the scene. Really? Yes. And it seems that Francis actually courted her. Now why would

"Dot org and look for the donate button We say thank you It's morning edition from NPR news ami Martinez and Culver City California And I'm Rachel Martin in Washington D.C. we begin this hour with a report of another deadly mass shooting This time in Tulsa Oklahoma Police say a man carrying a rifle and a handgun opened fire inside a medical building Investigators say the shooter killed four people and then apparently took his own life Here's Cliff Robertson He's the CEO of Saint Francis hospital talking to reporters We're an organization that believes in the power of prayer and there is nothing more of this community could do for us than to pray for the families and beloved ones in the victims of this senseless act This is a developing story coming just 9 days after the shooting at a Texas elementary school that killed 21 Over the Memorial Day weekend also a separate shooting at a festival in the town of taft near Tulsa killed one person and left another 7 wounded Joining us now reporter Beth Wallace from state impact Oklahoma Beth ga morning Good morning What can you tell us about the latest developments from the shooting So Annette tolson's woke up Wednesday morning the city's focus was on honoring the victims and survivors of the Tulsa race massacre 101 year anniversary was actually on Tuesday and Wednesday But a shooting happened around four 53 p.m. at the Natalie building on the Saint Francis hospital campus in south Tulsa There are 5 dead including the shooter and police believe the shooter died from a self inflicted gunshot wound And the killings drew a quick reaction from local representatives and federal officials including The White House which said President Biden had been briefed and The White House also offered support to state and local officials And our police providing further details about just what happened how the shooting took place Yeah so it took place on the second floor of a hospital and that floor also contains at least an orthopedic unit Police also said they found a witness to the shootings a person who they say was a potential victim found in a closet in the hospital Do we know anything about the victims or the shooter at this point Officials haven't yet released the victim's names and police say the shooter is between 35 to 40 years old Police haven't yet identified a motive for the shooting It's impossible to ignore the fact that the shooting in uvalde Texas just happened obviously there the focus is on the disputed police response is that having any effect on how police in Tulsa are dealing with this shooting You know what Tulsa mayor GT bynum actually praised the rapid collaboration in response from the various agencies involved a point of controversy in Texas Here local state and even federal law enforcement were involved I also want to express our communities profound gratitude for the broad range of first responders who did not hesitate today to respond to this act of violence But mayor bynum also said the time for policy discussions is in the future and right now his thoughts are with the families of the victims And in contrast to the shooting the police say their response time was about three minutes Officials say about four or 5 minutes passed from when the shooter came into the building to an officer's made contact Beth Wallace of state impact Oklahoma joined us from Tulsa thank you so much Beth Thank you There's a new push to mine more uranium in the U.S. It's rooted in a growing demand for more nuclear power plants to curb climate change And that's become an incentive for reopening an old uranium mine near Grand Canyon national park But native people in the area are wary of the industry's deadly past From member station KJ ZZ Michel marisco reports About a year ago investment group started getting more interested in acquiring uranium companies to address climate change Then in February Russia invaded Ukraine talk about the U.S. sanctioning Russian uranium push prices higher says Scott melby president of the uranium producers of America The faster we move away from those supplies the better for many reasons both humanitarian and business wise Russia and former Soviet republics supplied nearly half of all U.S. nuclear fuel now but Curtis Moore vice president of marketing for the mining company energy fuels says there's plenty of uranium in the U.S. It just so happens that some of America's best uranium deposits are in northern Arizona Uranium was first mined in this area when the U.S. was developing its atomic bombs used in World War II Its legacy is controversial native people working in the mine started reporting higher lung cancer rates a uranium mine waste pond collapsed here in 1979 releasing more radiation than the three mile island nuclear power plant failure Moore says mining practices are safer now and there are more environmental controls We can't control where the good uranium or rare earth deposits which we've been eating which are the three critical minerals that we focus on We can't control where they're found in nature.

"Of Pope Francis Saint Francis hospital these are all named after Saint Francis of assisi This was a famous saint one of the most famous certainly in the Catholic world And it's a very very important thing because of the humanism that exists This is what paved the way as you know John We stand for is reaching out to many other faiths To try to really bring people together to understand that we're really doing exactly the same thing where we're praying to the same God we're may have different ceremonies and that and so on but this is what we do And this is just very symbolic and the chief of police can a quarry was with us they've arranged for them to go around the Statue of Liberty and they took them to the World Trade Center memorial rate and John I can not tell you how much I appreciate it Thank you Gary crop thank you for everything you do trying to keep the world's religions together and having all the world's religious leaders work together for a better world when your time is up Welcome you in heaven God bless you and God bless everything you do Thank you John You're the best And as you know paved the way does not deal with religion We deal with problems and gestures between religion in order to bring people closer together and we've really changed the course of history So things are going very well in that regard but it's because of you because our other directors that we have all of whom Gary mealy is full He provided housing one of Stanley Brown provided housing for these guys and Vinny levian did some of the logistical work and just everybody it's a pave the way foundation as they had the time of their life Gary crop thank you and we'll talk so Let's get an update What the heck is going on in New York City and New York State by former congressman Peter king congressman Albany just completed a theoretical reform of bail The first used the word theoretical because nobody really knows what you're actually doing until they negotiate between the assembly and the Senate I understand Give us the pulse of where our citizens are at I'll tell you from what I hear and you're right We haven't fully examined the issues really seems to be only superficial It's with some small changes made but more has to be done I know Bill bratt was saying that based on what he had heard and I think that's the way it's come out And we have to wait and see and look at it but I just think that there's so much public pressure that the democratic leadership felt they had to do something They've made some small changes but not enough to stop the crime wave that we see And the second part of your question what people are thinking you know I guess different ways of gauging that but I'm in politics and that's a county We had an assembly district which for 54 years in a row had been controlled by Democrats They went at two three to one Was there even a real rate there And Republicans won a couple of years ago Seems to indicate something But then it was a special election Republicans wondered by almost two to one And that's in charge of senator district So here's your district after 54 years of Democrat Republicans never really made a serious effort because they knew they couldn't win it And yet we had a candidate last night we wanted two to one crime was a big issue There are many for him to win by that number He had had a large number of Democrats switching over a large number of independent switching because there's no way near enough registry Republicans to win And that's congressman People in national county people in New York It looks like the pulse that matters hack And they're not going to take anyone John they are and you're responsible for that because you're the one who got so strongly behind and donally against Kaminsky last year and where she is election when he was just chilling The district attorney and even one of the architects of the bail reform law and that is really caused a revolution on Long Island The campaign that really in many ways began a WABC against hard Kaminsky four and Donnelly he was up by 18 points He lost by 18 and the Republican swiftness or county as a result of that And now we see in this election last night the fact that you can have an unknown Republican winning by two to one in the heart of charge Kaminsky senators director when that speech Republicans the assembly is showing that people are really angry at shut off people with talk into the Republican candidate So he was going door to door going to local businesses and he would start talking to them about the information about taxes And you have people who are not happy about that but the conversation always came back and said it's a crime People are petrified of a crime especially in that part of national county which borders right on New York City And they're very very concerned And so listen we have a number of democratic senators up among islands next year or this year in election November We have to really mount strong campaigns against them unless they are willing to take the touchdown on bail reform and I don't see them doing it We can have another series of Todd Kaminsky type races and results in national county I have no personal animosity towards any Democrat but my personal thing I love New York We have to keep our citizens safe and happy Otherwise everybody's going to get up and leave You know that's better weather Look I have no animosity towards anybody you know Carl hey he's a nice guy I know him well But I've always I've always had good relationships with Democrats I was selecting the most bipartisan member of Congress but we're talking about life and death here John We're talking about really getting the job done and whatever reason Democrats have gotten themselves locked into this soft on crime issue There have been over backwards to please the progressives and the liberals and the people with soft on crime So we have to make this concerted effort We have to we have to do in these other generations while it was done in the Kaminsky district attorney race last year We have to have quality candidates We had to run We got to get behind them And also we have a congressional race in time to make sure And I understand And I understand Peter king I understand that the budget bill with the bill bill is being negotiated up in New York State right now in Albany and they're not going to do crap for our citizens You know if we're not going to be able to walk around and feel safe what the heck are we paying them for John that to me is the first and most important civil right of all We safe in your home safety enabled safe going to work safe sending ecosystem school and just knowing that you have the security of living in the safe community You don't have that anymore Certainly not in New York.

"So i've been studying. Been studying some great teachers That's what i like to read about. That's what i do most of my work. And because i want to be more like them i really do Not because i'm trying to be you know something special or anything like that I wanna my part. And there was a prayer from saint francis that i really liked. And i thought i wanted to share with you guys and gals so we read. This is the prayer of saint francis. Lord make me an instrument of your peace where there is hatred. Let me so love where there is injury. faith where there is despair hope where there is darkness light and where there is sadness joy o divine master grant that i may not much seek to be consoled as to console to be understood as to understand to be loved as to love for. It is in giving that we receive. It is pardoning that we are pardoned and it is in dying. We are born to eternal life. I can't think of anything more relevant. If you need an explanation for why you need to do these things there you have it because when you pardoned people you pardoned when you forgive people you were forgiven and when you give you receive. Why is that is it. Because of some law and order in karma that we're doing this and that is what happens is because god grants us wishes when we do the right thing or is it simply that we are all the same person and when we are kind to ourselves ourselves kind to us when you treat your brother and sister with respect they treat you with respect. That is where we need to be. That is not where we are now but that is where we need to be and when we get to that place the world will be different..

How to Communicate Effectively to Your Team with Patrick Lencioni

"Let's start out with our conversation with pat lynch tony. I got to talk with him about the importance of communication and why it doesn't happen the way we wanted to. Sometimes as dave ramsey says the biggest problem with communication is that we're under the illusion that it's actually occurred we tend to use ourselves as a baseline while i understood what i was saying. And if it's a latte. I think at the end of the day. It's a lack of empathy for like. What does that person see or hear. And how is that different from me. So we we often commit called the fundamental attribution error. And that's we assume that other people are like we are and if they're doing something wrong it's because they have a flaw but if we're doing something wrong it's because our environment is causing it. So i think the more that we can follow the advice of saint francis of assisi and understand others before we understand ourselves the less likely. We're going to have that communication problem you know. Oftentimes in business were moving fast. And there's a lot of work to be done. And so if i'm a business owner and i hear okay i need to have more empathy. I need a slowdown and understand them. More even if i want to do that pat. I don't have time. We gotta make stuff happen. We gotta move. They needed to get on board and figure it out. I'm not here to babysit these people. They have a job paying a lot of money. They should do their job. Yeah that's bad economics and bad mass because the idea. We have to slow down in order to go fast. I i like that because it's not down in order to slow down it slowdown in order to go fast. And when we slow down and make sure we're understood and we make sure we understand where somebody else's coming from we get more done faster when we're just going fast all the time we're constantly going back and having to clean up explain ourselves and it's like racecar driver hugo into that turn and you're like i'm gonna cut time off during this turn you're going to spin out you're gonna end up slowing down going out of the straight the people that know how to slow down going into the turn. Come out of it going gangbusters and so we have to recognize that. We think we're going fast or causing ourselves a lot more problem by having to go back and clean up everything afterward

What Would Happen If Chabot Dam in the East Bay Hills Broke Open?

"What would happen if chicago damn cracked open an empty the lake behind it onto neighborhoods in san leandro and east oakland. It's an alarming thought. We asked cake. Ud's dan bricky. Who's reported on safety issues at california's oroville dam to find the answer. Holly and vickers kings question is a really good one because it reminds us that all dams pose risks of some kind given the nature of the job they perform holding back huge volumes of water they can turn from placid lake into deadly torrent. If unleashed all at once. They deserve very close attention. When that attention lapses catastrophes can do happen in late may eighteen eighty nine flood. Water overflowed badly maintained private dam in western pennsylvania. Triggering its collapse. A wall of water race down the valley below a century later. Historian david mccullough said. The johnstown flood was so vividly alive in the local consciousness. I grew up in western pennsylvania. I'd heard about the johnstown flood my whole life as children. We used to shout run for the hills. The damas busted little knowing what real terror is in those words. The flood wiped entire towns off the map and killed twenty. Two hundred people in california owns its own special chapter in the history of dam disasters with a tragedy that unfolded more than ninety years ago in a remote canyon fifty miles north of downtown los angeles from the day. The saint francis dam opened in one thousand nine hundred twenty six. It leaked the folks in the farm. Towns downstream used to joke. They'd see you later if the damn don't break on march twelfth nine hundred twenty eight. The saint francis damn disintegrated just hours after it was pronounced sound by los angeles water. Chief william mulholland who had designed and built the two year old structure when the massive concrete dam broke apart water raised more than fifty miles to the pacific ocean killing about four hundred fifty people along the way but those events one hundred thirty years ago in johnstown ninety some years ago in los angeles county sound like ancient history much more recently california. Got a lesson in how dangerous and costly failure of even part of a major dam can be failure ambiance spillway structure results in an uncontrolled. Lisa flood waters from link oroville and eating evacuation from the low twenty. Seventeen collapse the spillway at oroville dam in the northern sierra foothills one hundred thirty miles northeast of san francisco touched off a series of events that lead local officials to order one hundred eighty eight thousand people to flee their homes. This is not a drill. Repeat this is not a drill. Spill ways are crucial to preventing overtopping. That's what happens. When a reservoir rises over the top of the dam and simply spills over a spillway is like an emergency valve. Damn managers can open to safely release water from a reservoir bills over the top but back in february twenty seventeen oroville dam spillway began to disintegrate just as a series of winter storms dumped huge amounts of rain across northern california without a fully functioning. Spillway lake oroville rose rapidly water poured over a hillside that was supposed to serve as an emergency spillway. That emergency spillway began to fail to leading to the mass evacuation. In the aftermath investigators found the emergency spillway was ill conceived and the main spillway was badly designed poorly built and inadequately maintained. So how is should bowe damn different from all those bad dams and what does east bay mud have to say about. Chaba cracking open and unleashing catastrophe on the east bay. Simple answer to that question is that the dam would never crack open. That's jimmy yolly east bay mud director of engineering and chief damn safety officer he oversees the district twenty six times including chabad. Damn the reality is that the dams are designed such that. They don't just crack open. You will see signs of a failure if one is to occur and The dan's designs with monitoring equipment to make sure that you can see that happening if it was a east bay mud confidence that a dam built within a quarter mile of a dangerous fault will stand up to violent shaking. Let's take a look at how the dam was first built. Nearly one hundred fifty years ago and how it's been maintained since

This'd w N Y c 93.9 FM and AM a 20. NPR News and the New York conversation. This is fresh air. We're speaking with journalist and historian Neil Gabler about his new book. It's the first of a two volume biography of the late Senator Edward Kennedy and the course of liberalism in American politics. It's titled Catching The Wind, Edward Kennedy and the Liberal Our 1932 to 1975. Ted Kennedy lost. Another brother, Robert Kennedy, was assassinated after winning the California primary in 1968 is part of his presidential campaign. S O. That was another deep tragedy for the Kennedy family. But the following year in 1969 was an incident which would probably do more to undercut Ted Kennedy's moral authority and reputation than anything else. In his life. This was the Chappaquiddick incident. I mean, you know, Ah, Lot of people remember this, but may not remember the details. Some some younger listeners may not recall it not know of it at all. Just just give us the bare outlines what happened in this episode? Well, this was the summer after Bobby Kennedy's assassination. And Ted was in a dire state. I described the state that Bobby Kennedy was in after John Kennedy's assassination. At this point, Ted Kennedy was in a similar state. He was asked to come to Chappaquiddick off of Martha's Vineyard to participate in a meeting of Bobby Kennedy's Ah group of Bobby Kennedy's former staffers. They were known as the boiler room girls because they manage the room in which state delegations were monitored. He went there for a kind of wake for Bobby. You also went there to participate in a regarding a race. He was a great sailor and what happened that evening, the evening of the party on Chappaquiddick Island. Is one of the boiler room girls named Mary Jo Kopechne E and Ted Kennedy went off in a car. Ted had said that they were going to go back to the mainland back to Martha's Vineyard to Edgar Town, but on the way back Had took a wrong turn one off of very narrow bridge over a pond called Puka Pond, and the car sailed off the bridge overturned into the water. It's about 7 Ft. Of water. Ted managed To free himself from the car throw window, then said that he dove back. Toward the car to try and remove Mary Jo Kopechne E. But he tried repeatedly and the current was very, very strong and he could not. Pull her out of the car Eventually, Mary Jo Kopechne e. Died. She drowned in the car is a womanizer and in even is a drinker. So there were those elements. Was he drunk where he and Mary Joe Kopechne e going off to have some sort of trust, which seems Highly unlikely whatever one thinks of Ted Kennedy, highly unlikely that Mary Jo Kopechne e would have done that she was a strict Catholic and it impudence, her reputation but also a to B. Fair to Ted Kennedy in this in this instance, it would be very unlikely that Ted Kennedy would have gone off with one of Bobby's a boiler room. Girls. It's just not something you would have done now. Ted did not report the accident. For another 10 hours. There were reasons that he gave for that. But he himself said that none of them were exculpatory that he couldn't exculpate himself from this. And that really was the incident of Chappaquiddick that had all sorts of ramifications politically for him personally, and for the political, cultural generally, right, right. I mean, after the accident, it was the middle of the night and he actually plunged into the water and swam across this little area to the Edwards and went to his hotel rather than reporting. It went to sleep, got up in the morning and spend a couple of hours and by the time he reported the accident You know the car had already been spotted, and I believe they had also already identified. It is his and rescued. Had retrieved Mary Jo Kopechne ease body. He would eventually plead guilty to leaving the scene of an accident and getting get a suspended sentence. And you know it left the feeling that You know, he got he got a treatment that no one else would have in that circumstance. What? What was the what was the impact on him? His image his career. The impact Woz that given Ted Kennedy's reputation, he had a reputation to his brother. But you know, Ted's reputation was certainly impudent didn't need much more imputing. And it was almost certainly the the death of any chance that Edward Kennedy would have of being president of states Prior To that accident. It was assumed that Ted Kennedy would be running against Richard Nixon in 1972. If he chose to run, and they would have a very good chance of being elected president, and if not, then then in 1976, but that doomed his chances. It also did something else. There's a line that Walter Mondale's then senator from Minnesota Saddened. I think it's It's absolutely true, he said. When Ted went over that bridge, he took liberalism with him, because if we talk about again the relationship between liberalism and moral authority And if you look at Ted Kennedy as being the primary proponent Liberalism. Then, when Ted Kennedy went over that bridge, he took liberalism with him because he took the moral authority over that bridge with him. Reintroduce you again. We're gonna take another break. Here We were speaking with Neal Gabler. His new book is the first volume of the two part biography titled Catching The Wind, Edward Kennedy and the liberal Our 1932 to 1975. Pope: Market capitalism has failed in pandemic, needs reform

"Pope Francis has presented his blueprint for opposed cove world, which covers fraternity income, inequality immigration, and social justice. NPR's Sylvia Poggioli reports. The Pope has the dad says a pandemic has shown that market capitalism has failed. The pope's post pandemic vision is contained in his latest encyclical `Fratelli cty in Italian `Fratelli. Refers to both brothers and sisters. It's release came on the birthday of his namesake Saint Francis of Assisi, it's escaping description of laissez faire capitalism Francis Denounces. This dogma of Neil Liberal faith that resorts to the magic theories of spillover and trickle down economics. A good economic policy he adds creates jobs doesn't cut them. The encyclical is a critique of nationalism and populism and the divisiveness caused by social media on racism. Finding Your Balance

"Good Morning. We love and I'm here in Crystal Lake Illinois. And wanted to spend a little time with you. Hope Everyone's fine. And Hope you're. Dealing with all the different new things coming up in your life like being students online or live for a combination of the two. Or going back to work or continuing to stay home and work from home. Or looking for a job or Trying to to decide what's the next course you want to take or thing you want to learn online. We have lots of things going on these days and I hope you're finding a way to be. Peaceful with that and have Have some dispassionate equanimity could time to work on our equanimity, right? That's the quality of balance. and. Taking a step back and being able to see things. Without. So much of our self involvement being able to be a little bit dispassionate. Find Balance and everything. So I always like to think of it as back away beck away from Mecca way not not out of indifference at all but out of. That Maybe we sometimes can be too aggressively putting ourselves in the middle of a situation. Really we are more of A. We can be more of a bystander and be more valuable to people in the situation. and. You know that feeling when you when you realize oh I, wish I just kept my mouth shut and not. Made that comment on facebook or not said something that you know that that made the situation not better but probably just. kind of hit the hit something that just immediately. Created. Created. A. A little minor explosion and a conversation or relationship. And sometimes that's because we we aren't able to become have that equanimity at work. You know there's a little. There's a little bit too much of our ego in a situation. So we just need to say something that maybe probably would be better if we didn't say it. I know that's one way I look at equanimity. Does back away? Think about the situation think about it a little bit more. find her own balance with an it without getting carried away by the emotion of the moment. And we can work with equanimity in so many situations and I think it's a beautiful quality for us to develop right now. Because we have a lot of opportunities before we we feel like. We are free from the effects of the pandemic. That's going to be a long time before free from the economic effects and the psychological effects and the physical effects. The way it's changed our landscape just physically the people we've lost. Maybe the people who were recovering from covid nineteen and the the. The. The long lasting effects that they might be having to deal with and how it affects our society in the long run. So develop equanimity along with compassion and loving kindness and. I am so which is no harm. So, we can have our hands full just with. seeing how we can those are the best ways we can be people in this world is to work on those qualities work on a deeper understanding of yourself. And then that's what it all comes back to because we have to know. What our little triggers are we have to know. We have to know about ourself. and. Then we can be more effective in a more Compassionate person for the rest of the world. So. Let me start with my wish. And I think that's good guidance I hope everyone's memorized it. Okay. He working on it if you haven't because it can be there for you when you need it. Or. The Saint. Francis prayer. May I become at all times both now and forever. A protector for those without protection. A guy for those who have lost their way. A ship for those with an ocean to cross. A. Sanctuary for those endanger. A lamp for those without light. A place of refuge for those who like shelter and a servant to all in need. By by means of this meritorious deed, May I never join with the unwise only the wise until the time I attain the Bonna. That close to you because that gives us. Wonderful Advice. And it also gives us a challenge. You know to reach out to be to be able to. See clearly what's going on in the world where we can help

"Annot Vena to Saint Clair Day four. From a letter to intrude of brew. This labor of ours is brief. But. The reward is eternal. Let the noises of the fleeting world and its shadow not confound you. Let the empty spectres of the deceiving world not drive you mad. Shut your ears to the whispers of hell and strong breath down its attempts against you. Willingly bear adverse evils and let provident goods not puff you up. For the one requires faith. The other demands it. What you promised, God faithfully render and he will repay you. Dear Saint Clair. As a young girl, you imitated your mother's love for the poor of your native. Assisi. Inspired by the preaching of Saint Francis, who enthusiastically of his Lord Jesus Lady Poverty. You gave your life to Jesus at Nineteen years of age allowing Saint Francis to cut off your beautiful hair. And Invest You with the Francis can happen. All through your life, you offered your great suffering for your sisters the poor Clare's and the conversion of souls. You greatly aided Saint Francis with his new order carrying on his spirit in the Franciscans after his death. Most of all, you had a deep love of Jesus in the most blessed sacrament which fueled your vocation to love and care for the poor. Please pray for me. But I will seek keep Jesus as my first love as you did. Help me to grow in love of the blessed sacrament. To care for the poor and to offer my whole life to God. Heavenly father. Priorities

"So many people are jumping down each other's throats lately because of differing opinions about Kovic nineteen the economy the upcoming election and so on so figured at timely for us to talk about the difference between having an argument with someone and having a discussion on the first day of each month I post a blog entry with some food for thought on the Buddhist bootcamp website and also send it over email which I typically get to read out loud and Sharon person with our monthly Buddhist bootcamp discussion circles throughout California but since all large gatherings have been postponed until we can all safely leave the house. I tried yesterday to share this month. Blog over a youtube livestream video with an open floor for Qa but we experienced a number of technical glitches so. I'm not sure I would do that again. Perhaps it would work better. If questions are submitted through Buddhist boot camps Patriot page in writing ahead of time and I will answer them publicly in a podcast episode for everyone to hear without having to listen to me on a live broadcast repeatedly asking. Can you hear me now? Can you see me is this working and I wouldn't have to scroll through a bunch of comments just to find the questions now. Back to the difference between an argument and a discussion in a nutshell. When you argue with someone you're trying to find out who is right but in a discussion. Both parties are trying to find out is right so next time you find yourself in disagreement with someone ask yourself what's more important to you to change what they believe or to gain a better understanding of how they have arrived at their opinion? I didn't include this next bit in my monthly email. But this is literally what triggered this month's topic I used to have a CO worker with a knack for nicknaming. All of our office mate's their special skills are marketing director. Who could sell you anything? You didn't even know you needed was called Costco. And our receptionist was named the director of First Impressions. And because I can load a dishwasher. Like it's nobody's business and get a lot done in a short period of time. She dubbed the efficiency expert a title of been wearing with much pride ever since while the other morning I was peeling beats in the kitchen sink and after each beat was peeled I would walk it over to the cutting board on the counter and then I would walk back to the sink to peel the next one. This went on about seven or eight times and it occurred to me that if anyone were to watch me do this. Little dance. Wouldn't seem very efficient to them at all. The piece of Information. That wouldn't necessarily have is that my priority was to use a few dishes as possible while avoiding dripping beet juice on any surface other than the kitchen sink or the cutting board in which. I was actually both efficient and successful. I wasn't trying to minimize the number of times. Walk back and forth from the sink to the cutting board my friends Julie and her husband argue about the quote unquote right way to do laundry. He loads the washing machine with all the dirty clothes. He adds a cup of detergent on top turns on the machine and walks away his to get it done as quickly as possible. Move on with his day. Julia on the other hand is a firm believer in starting the water flow pouring the soap into the washing machine and then adding the dirty clothes to the mix. They both want the same end result. Clean clothes but they go about it differently because their priorities are different. His is perhaps minimal effort and Julie's priorities to make sure the soap fully dissolves in the water before adding the close reminds me of working in the kitchen at the monastery will remember to members of the kitchen. Staff were asked to peel and cut ten pounds of carrots into small matchstick size strips. It took them about four hours which drove the efficiency expert in me crazy. Why not use the food processor? I asked the head of the kitchen that would be done in ten minutes and he told me the goal wasn't to get the job done as quickly as possible. It was to offer the students four hours of mindfulness practice in the kitchen. You see what I failed to do was contemplate the why behind his instructions. The food processor would have definitely chopped those carrots and minutes. That's true but the kitchen manager prioritized a native practice over efficiency and expediency and this was a Buddhist monastery so go figure. Why do we always assume we know what's best? I put my tail between my legs and took myself to the Meditation Hall and I sat down with my ego until it agreed to play. Nice man we sure do excel judging what people do and how they do it. But we fail miserably. A trying to understand the why behind her actions when we share a similar goal with someone but their priorities differ from our own their actions seem backward to US counter intuitive silly and even wrong take my friend. Sheila in her wife for example they both want to quote unquote make America great but she loves thinks we will get there by closing the borders to all foreigners while her wife believes immigrants make. America great in the first place and right now there are people who strongly believe the temporary financial burden on small businesses and individuals is worth. Everyone staying quarantined at home until there's a treatment for Kovic nineteen but there are also many who think the damage to the economy coupled with the health. Scare is an unnecessary. Amy So they want the shelter in place order lifted so we can return to quote. Unquote normal. We each want. What we think is best but what we think is best is determined by our priorities. The question we need to ask ourselves is what is the why behind people's actions otherwise we just go through life assuming our perspective is not only right but superior if you keep getting irritated by someone who refuses to change. Doesn't that mean you also refuse the change? I think Saint Francis of Assisi knew the importance of seeking to understand rather than to be understood and since we cannot wrap our heads around other people's logic by using our own. Let's not criticize what we don't even try to understand because once we get it. There's nothing left to criticize. Go ahead and contemplate the why behind your actions and you might find. You have that in common with everyone around you. All technical difficulties and challenges aside from the live broadcasts. There was a wonderful point. Brought up in the live discussion that we had about this topic yesterday. It was by listener. Who said that? Whenever she's in a disagreement with her husband and emotions escalate into what would turn into a full blown fight. They remind one another that they are on the same team. This essentially neutralizes the ego and accomplishes exactly what we were discussing to people. Trying to figure out what is right not who is right. Inner Peace is truly the first step we can take to live in peace with others. So let's take that first step together. Thank you for walking beside me on this journey. Even when we don't see eye-to-eye I appreciate you.

Of course I'm not going to be telling be blamed doing this. I'm not going to say Nice to meet you say Francis I'll I still be James Francis which is what I go by but in my mind in my heart. I'm going to let that presence overshadowed the and when when we do the the show in Portland. Our next event will be all the way down as Santa Barbara. How would we get there? I don't know there are few guidelines number everyone. We can't accept any money from anyone so people can't give us money but they can buy us a bus ticket if they want. They got a train ticket. But we can't fly so we can either walk hitchhike. Get a ride but bus ticket or get a train ticket in order to get from place to place but none of it. We'll be planned ahead of time. This is this is exciting and the other thing to think about. Is the weather because there will be inclement wether during the time that you are traveling yeah it will work. I don't know why I decided to do this. In winter only because it makes it more of a challenge yes already challenging. But you know I I just trust the process. Yes this is my faith angels all along the way who are going to be helping us and supporting this and I think it's just as much for them as it is for us that that what when we realized that look just like the prayer of Saint Francis says it is in giving that we receive is in loving that we are loved when we realize allies that and we give to another. We're really the ones who are receiving because there's really only one of us here So maybe sharing. During the prayer of Saint Francis in music would be a good idea since we brought that up and if people in actual feeling for what this what this music it's going to be in with the musical absolute any all right so.

"Hiking for a week or a month on a historic pilgrimage? Trail in Europe has become a popular Peter way for people from all over the world to rejuvenate themselves. It's gotten so that Spain's popular community. Santiago is even starting to feel a little crowded sometimes times. If you'd prefer a quiet or pilgrim route. Italy may have the answer. Sandy Brown and errands Italia have covered hundreds of miles on the historic walking trails of of Italy. And they WANNA help you give it a try. They've recently helped to found an organization called American pilgrims to Italy. And it's designed to help people like you would meet a plan. Pilgrimage hike in Italy in Sandy has written a detailed guide to tracking the way of Saint Francis from Florence to Assisi and then to Rome there joining us now on travel with Rick. Steves Steph's to recommend trails. That Saint Francis may have himself tracked Erin and thanks for joining us. Thanks for having US happiness. So Europe has these these venerable hikes. That are really long and it has these pilgrimage trails. That really have a a a little bit of a different meaning Aaron. What's the difference between just a long multiday hike in Europe that can be famous and established and a pilgrimage? Well to me pilgrimage signifies. This is a long walk to place of spiritual meaning and so to me. The first one that I ever did was the way of Saint Francis and so oh walking along pads in stopping in towns where he had been in there were stories about him had more of a spiritual context to it than just trekking. The camino goes to the supposed tomb of Saint James Ferried in Santiago de Compostela. Yes that would be the goal. People in the Middle Ages walked from Paris all the way to that northwest corner of Spain with that goal in mind Martin. Luther hiked from way up in Germany all the way to Rome. He was told to hike down there. It was kind of personal. What would you call it Sandy? A personal ordeal or a personal. I think you could say a pilgrimage also committed jar and then when he got to Rome he walked up the steps of this Accra scholar on his knees and had quite an experience. Enrollment was life changing for him so life changing that started the reformation. He did a lot of thinking and he got to Rome. I understand when when he got up to the top of those depths he kind of goes. This is all make sense exactly. It's a time when you think about these things. Isn't it now when we think about Italy. You guys are both specializing in Poke Mitch. Trails in Italy Saint Francis would be the the star of these things Send you wasn't St Francis relate to these pilgrimage trails well the VA Francesco Chess. Go the way of Saint. Francis is a modern connecting of the various different sites from Saint Francis Time and so for instance when he had a big experience the stigma experience at Santiago de la Berna. That's connected then with Google where he spoke with wolf and see see where he was born and had his last days. Okay so this is a modern. Lacing together of these stops people who want to get into whether they want to hike an excuse for hiker to actually get into the the whole life in the teaching of Saint Francis they would do this. Walk the name of your book is tracking the way of Saint Francis Triumph floors to CD-ROM. So that's what that would be. And then we hear about the FRANCI. JANA the via French ejecta is an historic walk. And so it's a little different. From the way of Saint Francis in terms of it was put together in the ancient world or in in the Middle Ages actually because there was a priest by the name of Cyrillic that was elevated to the episcopacy and he was supposed to appear in Rome to receive his Palim. which is the symbol of his office and so he walked with a retinue from Canterbury across France Switzerland down through Italy and arrived in Rome and then instructed his secretary to take notes of the way back and those notes were all contained at the Cathedral and Canterbury where they sat for thousand and years and then thousand years later people said well what is this and they put together the Modern Day via French agenda following that same modern modern day Revisit of this now does that relate to canterbury tales at all. It doesn't away because well. In case of Canterbury Tales they were ending at Canterbury Burri and the case of this. They were starting at Cantor. Okay now would. Saint Francis have actually walked on that trail on the difference. You know although it's very possible possible that he walked portions of it in order to get up to the community Santiago Kaz. He did walk. The community. Santiago did only twelve fourteen but the a piece of the way of Saint Francis that's historic that he was summoned to Rome by Pope innocent the third and he walked from. CCD Rome and ended up at the Saint. John Lateran Church. So that's one of the stops on the way of Saint Francis and it follows roughly his okay if you were so inclined you could leave a C. C. N. B. Meditating on in Saint Francis and his teaching and his experience all the way to Rome. That's actually the goal right and then the finishing point would be Saint Peter's or exactly what well we stop at Saint John Lateran But we end up at Saint Peter's then in my book I include the Pilgrimage Churches of Rome. Yeah as an option at the end because there are seven urban historic pilgrim churches. And it's about a twenty five kilometer walk and you hit. All seven of this. Church is quite an interesting walk in modern day Rome but touching on medieval medieval and ancient sites. Sandy Brown is the author of the CICERO trekking guide to the way of Saint Francis and Errands Italia heads and organization that prepares the American travelers to explore the pilgrimage trails of Italy. We have links to their websites with this week. Show at Rick Steves Dot com slash radio so sandy. When you come to Piazza del Popolo I I try to think of it? Like a pilgrim five hundred years ago. Yeah what do you think when you come to Piazza. No Popolo one thing is before you get there you would have crossed the Ponti Mill View. And that's a wonderful wonderful historic place because that's where the vision of Constantine was where the cost went back in three twelve or three ten or something. Exactly yes then and you follow the road in to Piazza del Popolo. And of course would you would say and what I would say. I is go into the Santa Maria Church and look at the car of Agios right right so that's a piece that you have to do and then we would want people to walk along the ancient streets that had toward the Vatican so so there's the street where they made the beads that go on the rosaries uh-huh and that's a street that we'd want people to go and sort of skirts along the top of the You you know a couple of other. Like Piazza NAVONA. Right on the way to Saint Peter's and if you're a pilgrim you would know that I go down this boulevard to that obelisk and then I looked to the left after nicey a dome and then I looked on there and I see a statue and you you would know how to navigate through the city by these long beautiful elegant streets that lead to great landmarks works. Yes and specially the pedestrian streets so by the time a pilgrim gets to Rome. They've walked maybe a hundred or a thousand or seventeen hundred kilometers commodores. So they're also looking for a bed and a cafe and Wanted to do the kind of walk. It'll get him in the most economical kind kind of way to their destination but then when they arrive in Saint Peter's there is a certificate that it can receive if they've walked at least one hundred kilometers. It's the equivalent on the Community Santiago. Is that Compostella. This is called the testimony. I'm okay and so that's a nice treat for us and I was going to ask you about this. I know when you go to community Santiago. You clicked this passport. Talk about the credential in the practical reason for that when you are a pilgrim in Italy heading to Rome so the credential or they called the credence Ya gala. It's of paper. That's like your passport. That's what differentiates you as a pilgrim from. Just anybody else traveling. So certain places. We'll give you discounts on your lodging. If you have your credential in basically every town you stop and you get a stamp along the way and then when you arrive at Your Final Destination Chan that sort of your proof that hey. I'm pretty awesome because I just did this. Really Amazing Walk and these are the stamps to show it in Rome. Is there actually a a regular place that you go and you can. There's there's somebody there and their job is to stamp this credential yes you go to the pilgrims office and I did not have to wait at all we went in. I was walking with with four friends and we arrived. We had to fill out a piece of paper and it was actually quite emotional thinking you know this is. My journey is officially Dinan. I'm filling out this paper showing where I started. And you get your final stamp and then you receive your like Sandy said your testimony them and then you have a souvenir for this gassing to remember and it's probably a beautiful moment
