"Welcome back to another episode of the moving to live podcast and also the fit lad. Pge podcast listeners. Know if you've listened to us before sometimes we cross pollinate or interview. Somebody who makes a great guests for both fit lab? Pga In moving to live. Both of our podcasts. Have Ethos movement is a lifestyle not just an activity fill out. Pittsburgh tries to highlight people who do great movement things in the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania area moving to live tries to break down knowledge silos. And I think today's guest is well suited for both podcasts. Were in the middle of starting week. Five about halfway through week. Five of the Pittsburgh area. Essentially being in social distancing schools are not in session other than virtually and people across the world probably are very aware. It's very similar in various places. Today's guest is Doug Patrick. He is a cross country track and field coach. Upper Saint Clair high school which is a suburb of Pittsburgh. Pennsylvania is also a physics professor. I think from what I've seen is probably the person that I have seen. Who Uses twitter to the best effect of anybody else? As soon as we're done with this I need to find out more twitter. Twitter twitter tips from him. But I think if anybody can talk about the effect that it's had on a career on athletes these coaching and also he somebody who organizes a yearly cross country conference for high school coaches across Pennsylvania and in some cases in other states that he's been I won't say forced but he's had the opportunity over the past couple of weeks to realize this is not going to happen face to face. This is actually going to happen on zoom so doug thanks for taking time to talk to a fit lab. Pittsburgh in moving to live all. Thank some real excited. Kinda talk in connecting share a little bit about what we do like the first thing. That's very interesting to go over because I find it fascinating. I actually have a podcast that came out today where recording today with the physician who is in Italy who has been in quarantine for over four weeks. When did you first find out that your job is a physics teacher and as a cross country coach at Upper Saint Clair that you weren't going to be going into work early morning every day So I WANNA say probably March eleventh was when all this like hit in terms of at the high school and I know earlier that week At students asking. Hey what's going on or we heard. Were not going to be here next week. But I believe the date might the eleventh and our administration had hit said you know the following week we would not in school and I think at that point. It was just sort of a suspension through the middle of April So that being said you know. Uh Sports deathly weren't going to be happening During the suspension academics weren't GonNa be happening and like I wanna tip my hat to the administration at Upper Saint Clair School. Because they were very proactive about like thinking in having a plan in place in not rushing to hurry up and do something to fill time In I had a feeling that we weren't going to go back to distance learning illness after the last three weeks But until we got the official word It are like department meeting which was virtual that you know. We're not going back into the building and you know the state for athletics and activities. Said we're we're down without as well. I don't Wanna Seattle's in disbelief but I just didn't process it. It didn't seem that real so until I think it was like last Thursday That's when we got the official word and you and I were chatting prior to starting recording. I think I mentioned to you that I I started to take it seriously. Maybe four or five days before that and March tenth or eleventh was what I shut everything down to. I'm fortunate in that my real job is I teach online for California University of Pennsylvania so my job per se hasn't changed that much but I'm curious prior to that March eleven. Say a week before that or two weeks before that where was the thought process or was there a thought process about Cova nineteen in the upper Saint Clair School district as far as you as a teacher also as a track coach where you're traveling all over western Pennsylvania. Yeah so I guess we go back to the end of February. We're still in our indoor track and field season. So we're actually Penn state. We had ugly. Three athletes go to the state in so it was the NFL. Or wasn't I don't want to say it wasn't hitting United States but it was something wasn't in the public train were in any of the media and it. Maybe I was naive but I didn't know how it would impact us or if it was going to impact us so I can only speak for myself just in terms of when it. I hate you know that week of the eleventh before the eleven at the beginning of March I would see things come up on on the news. You're in my twitter feed and really. I didn't know the magnitude of what it was in Seoul. The fallen wake you know we weren't school in All the information that kept coming for Nats I just I didn't have a lot of information about the beginning so I didn't anticipate the magnitude. It was GonNa have on everything in everyone's like how long after they March eleventh again just for people who are listening and I know it differs from state to state. Were you aware that the track season was not going to continue score to cease to exist from that point forward. Yes we two leaks in. That was in the sacking leak and the way and the WPA out kind of like two weeks mention of nothing ends. You know on the way home when I got home. Phone's blowing up and local coaches on texting on their taxi. May and I guess different districts were handling it differently summer just doing exactly what the POW said. Some were doing more than what they had said. by I don't WanNA say wasn disbelief but it's sort of as more time went on initially thought we would go back. Maybe we'll just have a district championship or they would modify St Ann's probably about a week and a half ago. I just thought my mocked. It seems like this is just not going to happen. part of that. Is You know a lot. The kids that we have the in college I mean their seasons were cancelled at the beginning of March in. I was thinking you know if college is GONNA CANCEL NOT SEASON. It would make sense to me that a high school. Oscar Cheese Whiz go on. I'm curious I know you have a number of athletes. Go on and run in college. What effect do you think that? This is going to have on high school seniors now as far as getting recruited or getting if they're good enough getting scholarship money to go to college is the fact that they are not going to be able to run their senior year. Run Times they're potentially or PR's right no. It's it's going to impact a lot of kids. I would almost even say kids. That are juniors in terms of if they're track athletes usually their junior year weather guy or girl those the Times that the colleges used the rhythm their junior in spring track. So yeah there are GonNa be at a disadvantage. I'm some seniors. We have that are. GonNa run in college. They were in the process of sort of on being proactive prior to that of visiting schools reaching out schools figuring out if know running is GonNa work in their future with academic so seniors are missing their senior season But I almost want to say maybe juniors. They're going to be track athletes. They're you know they're they will have no times at all. Naturally with colleges. College coaches look at in terms of recruiting.

Despite Bankruptcy And Illness, Bob Murray Remains A Loud Voice For Coal
"Into Bob Murray's Corner Office in Saint Clair's Ville Ohio feels like stepping back in time. Mr Brady's here Murray wears dark suit jacket with a silk handkerchief poking out of the pocket he sits behind a large dark wood desk. Nice to meet to. Oh Murray returns eighty years old in January and his less steady on his feet than it used to be. He suffers from lung disease but says it's not related to years of working underground in coal minds. There's constant hissing sound in his office. That's the Oxygen Murray needs debris he says three hospitals have rejected him for a lung transplant. Because because of history of strokes not on my fighting for my own life. But I'm fighting for the life of my employees. My company Murray's is recent bankruptcy comes after a long career. He began as a minor then built his own company. Eventually with seven thousand employees. Natalie Biggs is a coal industry three analyst with Wood Mackenzie so a lot of coal companies had Undergone bankruptcy and around Twenty fifteen twenty sixteen and Murray was one of the ones sounds that actually kind of made it through that period and was able to purchase a lot of assets off the back of that or bankruptcy boom big says Murray energy took on debt as the the coal market continued to decline and bankruptcy. Murray says he'll lose ownership of his company. Some of his unionized workers may lose healthcare and pension benefits benefits and the filing is a political loss for president trump. We have ended the war on American energy and we have ended. Ah The war on beautiful. Clean Coal Bob. Murray has had the trump administration's ear. He drafted an action implant. Help coal than delivered it to Energy Secretary Rick Perry photos from the meeting. Show the two men hugging while trump rolled back some environmental regulations. On Murray's is list the administration was not able to deliver the subsidies for coal plants. That Murray wanted he argues that Cole. With fuel stored on site is more reliable. The a natural gas that's piped in and renewable energy that depends on the sun and wind still. Coal is losing market share to these cheaper and cleaner ways of generating being electricity murray argues that makes the electric grid less reliable. But all of a sudden one of these days you'll be hearing about on NPR about this power grid failure and people are going to become alarmed and all of a sudden they don't forget this nonsense called Climate Change Murray predicts that will come during a winter storm and that people will freeze to death. Frankly this is just a scare tactic. Tactic Marianne hit with the Sierra Club. Says there are smart. People running the country's power grids they take into account every coal plant closing and make sure the grid remains remains reliable. Empty promises about bailing out coal plants or reviving the fortunes of the coal industry are just distracting our country from from the real work we need to be doing hit. Says that is moving. The country away from coal and toward cleaner Renewable Energy Murray's climate denial and call boost booster. ISM are evidence of a key element of his personality once. He's concluded he's right about something Murray doesn't give in. Here's another example of that at twelve years ago Murray Energy made news for a tragic mind collapse in Utah that trapped six workers or singing my life I take it obviously to my grave. Demand were never located and ten days later. Three rescuers died as another section of the mine collapsed. A government report concluded there were flaws in the mind design. Murray's company was find more than a million dollars for safety violations yet even today Murray Denies Responsibility. A lot of blame being pointed in the end I was correct. It was an earthquake seismologists at the University of UTAH. Say say. That's just not true. The earthquake was the result of the mind collapsing even now as he struggles for breath just walking across the room. Murray is still oh pushing for what he believes. As company was preparing for bankruptcy Murray delivered a speech in West Virginia calling on federal regulators to subsidize coal. Aw and keep his industry alive.
'Why Is There Nothing Left?' Pension Funds Failing At Catholic Hospitals
"Support for NPR and the following message come from Almond Board of California. Did you know almond farmers and processors are dedicated to continuous improvement like putting everything an almond tree grows to good use more about their zero waste goal at almondsustainability dot org in upstate. New York hundreds of former complexities of a Catholic hospital have lost their pensions after their pension fund collapsed now. Their situation illustrates a problem. That is pretty widespread. Many many religious organizations are not covered by federal program that protects most other employees pensions. NPR's Chris Arnold brought us this report the people who worked at Saint Clair as hospital in Schenectady New York say it was like being part of a big family for some especially. My Dad worked there as a pharmacist when when I was a young kid and I you know I remember I was always there. It seemed like always part of that community of people care and Bradley followed her dad's lead and worked at the hospital for twenty four years and she's a nurse. She's fifty six now. Bradley says the pay wasn't great at Saint Clair's but it was a good hospital. I enjoyed what they did there and believed in the promises that were made about the pension but the hospital which was founded by the Catholic Church ran into financial problems command in two thousand and eight it was folded into a larger hospital system workers were told though at that time that the pension would still be there for them but then a year ago they got letters in the mail. Bradley was told essentially her twenty four years at the hospital didn't matter her pageant was gone. She stands to get nothing. Why is there nothing laughed who screwed up you know who did what to. Who and how come this happen Jr and who's accountable the AARP foundation is asking the same questions. It's it suing the Catholic diocese of Albany on behalf of the workers. The lawsuit says more than six hundred people lost their entire pensions. Bradley says her husband has been has some retirement savings but the couple's not sure that it's going to be enough. We have a daughter who has special needs so we have to worry about her future to now now most people in the US do not have pensions but those that do the vast majority are protected by government insurance program employers with tensions have to pay into it but religious religious organizations such as Catholic hospitals they can opt out and both avoid that expense and the cost of complying with other federal pageant rules. That's what the people managing managing. St Clair's hospital dead so there is no guarantee and many workers really are left with nothing dare. Smith is an attorney with the Aarp Foundation Russian. It's incredibly devastating I mean these folks were relying on this money for their retirement and they were promised over and over there about one million people people with pensions from religious organizations that have no federal backstop. That's an estimate from lawyers in a related case. That's not to say that all those pension plans are in trouble but some are and there is a growing number of lawsuits. The Saint Clair's case argues that even though the hospital had an exemption from the federal rules. It's still violated violated state law by failing to provide the pensions that were promised so dare. Smith says religious groups can't just abandon their workers. This is really a new wave colosseum. It's finding a way to make sure that they can be held accountable sixty nine year old Mary Hart Sean is also affected. She worked in radiology at the hospital and she's he's actually had to sell her house because of this pension debacle and it's still pretty hard for her to talk about it. Now House was going to be the place I retired retired who was just a little house but it sat on a little lake and it was so pretty peaceful and it just wasn't it wasn't gonNA work out. I knew knew it was in an I'm okay. I'm GonNa you know you get through it but it does take its toll on your heart and soul and to actually harsher and says she's better off than most. She's in a smaller class of older workers who were offered seventy percent of their pensions going forward but she says she couldn't trust that the money he would be there so she took a lump sum payout instead which she says wasn't very much money for its part the diocese declined and interview due to the litigation but said in a statement that it knows that people are suffering but that the diocese quote never managed the Saint Clair's pageant find Saint Clair's as a separate corporation and quote Victoria Esposito is a local legal-aid attorney working with the AARP on the case. She says it's not true that the Diaz has no responsibility. This hospital was run by the Catholic Church more specifically diocese of Albany and the diocese of Albany is responsible for making these people whole and paying their pensions like many diocese icees. Albany is facing costs related to the church sex abuse scandal but the lawyers for the workers say the diocese is not bankrupt. There's money there so esposito. Zito hopes the lawsuit can succeed so the people who worked at Saint Clair's hospital can get their pants back Chris Arnold N._p._R. News.
A Mysterious Disease Is Killing Beech Trees

"Show. How Roxanne Quimby took a roadside Honey stand in rural Maine and turned it into birds bees. One of the biggest natural personal care brands in America. Every Sunday at my local farmer's market. There are people who sell homemade hot sauce and handcrafted wallets. There's seemed a woman who sells mohair scarves using the mohair from her inquiry. Goats imagine going to your local farmers market in say main back in the mid nineteen eighties. And if you happen to be near Bangor, you might have come across Roxanne Quimby and Bert shabby. It's selling jars of Honey Honey from birds owned beehives charming, right? Maybe buy jar and move on. And Roxanne would keep undoing what they were doing. You. Do it. You were doing except Roxanne thought. Hey, could we make in sell candles from all the beeswax we have or could we use the beeswax to make other stuff? Okay. So you can kind of figure out where this is headed. Because that of course is what happened and even though Roxanne and Bert never intend. Added to build a billion dollar brand or even a million dollar brand. It just happened. Of course, a lot of that had to do with Roxanne's passion and drive, but the idea was never to build something massive. It was a farmer's market product today walk into any drugstore in the US or even overseas in you will find an impressive display of birds bees products lip balm lotions, soaps, shampoos all labeled with the face of a heavily bearded man named Burt. The likelihood that Roxanne Quimby would build a massive company or any company at all was so implausible back in the early nineteen eighty s when she was a single mom waiting tables at a diner and a decade before that she drove across the country from Massachusetts where she was from to San Francisco seeking out a simpler life a life without lots of material needs. It was adventure. To go all the way to the west coast from New England and New York, it was a great unknown. And I had always wanted to be an artist from the time I was five. So it seemed like a natural place to go to art school. I guess you got there and what like nineteen seventy around. Then get tummy what tell me what your impressions of San Francisco were like at the time. I think San Francisco kind of unlocked itself to me while I was there. It was a pretty little town. But the depth of experience that I had their took some time to assimilate and understand, you know, I I cross a great cultural bridge while I was out there. What do you mean by that? I learned to think differently and to probe more deeply everything needed to be reevaluated. And looked at again. So you start to sink like what you're all the way you thought of the world before was this wrong. Well, it was too limited. And I think that the material world was too important. And really it's not as important as I was taught that it was we were encouraged to make a good living. Both of my sisters had MBA's. Like, my dad did and earning power and ones that chievements were emphasized, and I took a turn to the extreme left when I went to art school and rejected the pursuit of material comforts who's really quite wonderful. Yeah. And and so you're in San Francisco, and you're kind of going through this. The transformation this personal transformation? Can of rejecting your go out and money kind of way, you were raised which was way, many many many people raised and what did you think? Did you think I don't need that life? I want a different life. What was what did you start to think about the life? You wanted to have. Well, I wanted meaning and I wanted to live deeply I was very influenced by throw who wrote about it quite beautifully. I was looking for transcendence. I just my world just got bigger, and I felt my relationship with it expanded. I I guess you had a boyfriend in San Francisco at the time and the two of you decided to like go off around the country to find a place to live. Yeah. This is George Saint Clair boyfriend at the time. And and and so we would you guys. Do you just

But I don't I don't think he more. So many words he can't because by the direction of the well, exactly what we're talking about in regards to a possible litigation. But I I guarantee he did say even if he did get in trouble each I'd do it again and damn straight in a heartbeat. Now did your dad ever do that? Because your dad, I know him very just a little bit. But he seems like if somebody would have done something remotely like that around your house. They would be was staring in my younger sister's room and pledging themselves to that. Yes. And he found them it would have been a bad bad day. My dad is a very very principle guy will be much better off if there were more people like him, and that would not have stood have you ever done something like that seven four nine seven thousand eight hundred the big one pound seven hundred on AT and T, and we're not talking like you got in a bar file or whatever. Some U.S Cities will pay you to move there
"In, this new phase of the US economy one marked by a shortage of? Workers rather than jobs civic leaders in Hamilton, Ohio and, elsewhere are asking themselves why not pay people to move here it's a story by Wall Street Journal reporter Shinde race shandy what's going on Air is potentially a worker shortage where companies. Just can't find enough people to fill all the jobs that they have open, and so some places especially smaller cities small towns rural areas are offering? To pay people money to move there it's, incredible, what, a, swing from like Two thousand eight two thousand nine right was fixed those kids. Graduating college then who couldn't find anything Yeah now you'll? Get a job and you'll get money towards your, student loan debt it's incredible so who's doing what what kind of things they dangling So one of the places that we profile pretty deeply. In the story is a city at Hamilton Ohio it's about an hour from Cincinnati and this is one of these kind of. Standard rust belt, cities it was once a hub for manufacturing paper mills and, safe, manufacturers that, was once known as the safe capital of the world but you, know there, was a downturn in manufacturing and by the early two. Thousands you know all those paper mills and. Manufacturers had last and obviously you had. You, know the recession and the whole city was sort of decimated the downtown became just full of dilapidated buildings there was a two percent occupancy rate well the economy started turning the. City started really investing and trying to buy up, the buildings and trying to bring employers back to the area and they've had some pretty decent success the, problem, is that they don't have the people and this is an issue that is. Sort of. Going on all over? The midwest and the northeast where The population growth has just been really, tap it especially in the labor force people in their prime working years between twenty five and fifty, four To, try to really convince young. People come live in our. Downtown hopefully that'll dry even more young people downtown and they. Can try to you know create a? Priding urban center, sounds like a great opportunity when we say these cities are paying people to move there in what ways. Are they paying, them so in Hamilton, they, are offering young people who are willing to live downtown. Five thousand dollars towards their student loan debt in some places like in north Platte Nebraska, they're just willing to give you. Ten thousand dollars cash if you move there and you commit to living. There for a certain amount of time some places are offering you land some places are offering you money towards the. Down payment on a home the idea is to, just sort of give people an extra added incentive to come to these places who's offering land I think. North Platte jeez yeah that's unbelievable I there was one guy in your story university of, South Dakota economists whose call this. Like a modern day homestead act yeah exactly I mean that's the idea. Like just just come here and we will give you money I made a mistake if Marnie Iowa that's offering hunt Well that's, really something we're speaking with Wall Street Journal reporter Shane. D racer, stories called how bad is the labor shortage. Cities will pay you to, move there now that say without the promise of job they want. You to move, there and then look or you I think you need to, probably have a job but I mean it's not very hard to. Get, one in these places you know you don't necessarily have to have a job I? Think like in Hamilton, they. Give, you a. Certain, amount of time to find a job, but you know part of the whole issue is that there's this worker shortage. So, it's. Not too, hard to find a job in these

"Yeah i mean i definitely think that the vixen probably overall did a better job i thought though that blair saint clair really had more energy had a lot of energy i don't know if that's because i had maybe low expectations of what blair was going to do with this lip sync but i thought that they both did really well honestly i i still can't get over the fact that the vixen did like air trumpet or air or something it was supposed to be a trombone yeah like what is going on i can we can we stop like air instruments because we've got an era guitar twice now we have air trumpet we got the air band i'd love for them to play love their music crack calm down within say hairband okay we're not there yet i mean i'm just going to give you guys a hot take i wish she would have sent them both home really thought that this was terrible on both of them because you've got blair saint clair over there acting like celine dion instead of donna's you start diana ross and then you've got the vixen who is flipping and dipping and twisting and really it's supposed to be a fun happy song it's supposed to be like non in winking end like almost soul tree in a way and yet there is nothing of that coming from her like it reminded me of latrice royale and kenya michael's when she's flipping around the stage where latrice is just singing except there was no latrice royale this time there were just two idiots on the stage that didn't know what the song was about so i kind of both of them would have been sent home i'm sure people are like the vixen and now that's not true because i really responded to her out that this week it's just i feel like she released screwed up the lips sink in relied too much on like flipping around like a cat in a room full a rocking chair.

"Now not this kid because this was thirty years ago but he's going he's really really good as well and he's going to iowa state so that was sort of the the battle in that area oshkosh north against cocoon they were actually different divisions connor was a division down they were division to oshkosh north was division one and i think they both won the state title i know cook on it but albert i think was the kid's name from oshkosh they are producing some kids in that area now of obviously high level let's see i would give west virginian a minus it would it would could have been historic year if it wasn't for bad officiating another texture also an a minus can't go any lower with dachshund jc going doing giving absolutely everything on and off the court and let's see brendon firms i was thinking that he came from michigan but got hurt how is his status actually it was his brother michael ferns who started his career at michigan michael transferred to west virginia couple years ago sat out one year played the two thousand six seat teen season as a backup fullback played a good bit for west virginia but then decided to concentrate on academics he's an engineering major and did not play last year brendan came straight from saint clair zero high school is a very high level recruit he was going to play his freshman year in sixteen got injured played the first four games i think it was last year got injured jet again first year was a medical redshirt because it was a preseason injury last year counted and now as a redshirt sophomore fighting for certainly spot on the too deep in if not a starting job at the linebacker position he's a middle linebacker he and dylan tonkery your top to middle linebacker now dylan could play any of the three linebackers spots but if they decide brendan is one of their top three linebackers they'll move dylan out but if not then brendan will be your backup behind dylan tonkery so that's where that one is good show i know you probably can't answer on the phone but why wasn't the i m g network on the radio for phones ipads actually you know again i don't follow all the inner workings of the msn situation now.
