"That is the Greek term for the word sacrament. We were initiated into the mystery, and that was through baptism. We look back and we know that our lord was one of the very last commands he gave the apostles, go out and baptize them. Go out and why, because what happens at baptism, Christ comes to dwell in us. We are ontologically changed. As St. Paul would say, it is not I who live, but Christ, who now lives in me. And so that happens to each one of us. Imagine that the mystery of that, we become a part of the mystical body of Christ. Well, if you're a part, you're not just a member of a club, and you can't just you can't leave the affiliation. No, you've become a member when you're a member of a night of Columbus, you're a night. But if you're part of the mystical body, what do you become? You become a mystic. You become part of Christ. You are Christian. And so that divine communication. I mean, isn't there is nothing more mysterious than the fact that he will make his dwelling in us. Now, you're right. Some people will say, well, that sounds kind of new agey. Well, then be careful about when you read the gospel of John. And you get to that chapter 17. And he's talking about how the father and he are one. And that he will, they're going to come and we will come and dwell with them. And at the very last of that, Christ says, and I will dwell in them. Okay. So a mystic is you and me in a very real way. And every time we go to the sacraments, particularly the eucharist, when we receive what we know to be the full presence, not just a portion or a piece of Christ, he is fully present, even in the smallest little kernel, the little portion, that is fully the full presence of Christ, and when we consume that, oh my gosh, think about that. There was an explosion of grace. If you're aware, now many of the women that we've come to know as women mystics, and even men, like John of the cross, and saint Bernard of clairvaux, and so many others seen Augustine even talks about how that in our prayer, it becomes when we're aware, but we're receiving, and we're open, you know, because he's not going at the door. He's not going to do it in all of us.

"The great characteristics of strength. Finally, instead of that poison food of uncharted, there is love. Love and season and out of season. Saint Bernard says, Frida and goodness and remember to eat your bread. And all of these circumstances remember to do that. We usually don't forget to come to the refectory. As far as I can see, everybody shows up faithfully three times a day. Because we wouldn't be able to live our lives to do our work to pray, if we did not have our nourishment. But we have to be told the spiritually. Remember to eat your bread or your heart, wool wither away. When saint Bernard says, feed on goodness, he is repeating in different words with St. Paul says. Everything that is lovely, everything that is admirable, everything that is lofty. Let this be the substance of your thoughts. This is what we feed on. As we move into this week of advent, we need to improve our diet. We need to feed steadily on goodness so that we can be with God's grace. Prepared to meet him at Bethlehem. God is swift to do good. Sometimes we are slow, aren't we? This is no time to be slow. We have to feed on goodness as a steady diet in these weeks. On every occasion looking for this nutritious food of goodness. Let us help one another in this. Because just as physically, malnourished person shows this. In her complexion, her gate. So do rightly nourish spiritual persons show this to one another. When someone is continually feeding on goodness, it shows. We need that example. We all see the beauty of right behavior of charity of gentleness. Of stability in doing good. A fidelity. And this makes us want to look like that too. You've been listening to an excerpt from come lord Jesus, meditations on the art of waiting. "From the liturgy of the hours, according to the Roman right. From the office of readings. From a sermon by saint Bernard, abbot. God's word will come to us. We know that there are three comings of the lord. The third lies between the other two. It is invisible, while the other two are visible. In the first coming, he was seen on earth. Dwelling among men. He himself testifies they saw him, and hated him. In the final coming, all flesh will see the Salvation of our God, and they will look on him whom they pierced. The intermediate coming is a hidden one. In it only the elect see the lord within their own cells. And they are saved. In his first coming our lord came in our flesh and in our weakness. In this middle coming, he comes in spirit and empower. In the final coming, he will be seen in glory and majesty. Because this coming lies between the other two, it is like a road on which we travel from the first, coming to the last. In the first, Christ was our redemption. In the last, he will appear as our life. In this middle coming, he is our rest and consolation. In case someone should think that what we say about this middle coming is sheer invention. Listen to what our lord himself says. If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my father will love him, and we will come to him. There is another passage of scripture which reads. He who fears God will do good. But something further has been said about the one who loves, that is, that he will keep God's word. Where is God's word to be kept? Obviously, in the heart, as the prophet says, I have hidden your words in my heart. So that I may not sin against you. Keep God's word in this way. Let it enter into your very being. Let it take possession of your desires and your whole way of life. Feed on goodness, and your soul will delight in its richness. Remember to eat your bread or your heart will wither away. Fill your soul with richness and strength. If you keep the word of God in this way, it will also keep you. The sun, with the father will come to you. The great prophet, who will build the new Jerusalem will come. The one who makes all things new. This coming will fulfill what is written. As we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, we shall also bear the likeness of the heavenly man. Just as Adam since spread through all mankind and took hold of all. So Christ, who created and redeemed doll, will glorify all. Once he takes possession of all. Lord our God, grant that we may be ready to receive Christ when he comes and glory, and to share in the banquet of heaven where he lives and marines with you, and the Holy Spirit. One God, forever and ever, amen..

"It's the other side of the same coin. And to give away oneself, you know, that produces good fruits to look in on oneself and be focused on what was pleasant for me, that's also going to be likely the pursuit of things outside of prayer. Now, here's another one that sets off alarm bells, I think, for many, many folks in myself included, I've had to really have a gut check on this one, and that spiritual gluttony. Where you just keep consuming, consuming, consuming, and never just resting. With sometimes where you're at or what God has already given you, use what you've been given. And I think powerful remedy to that is exactly what you've always counseled this father haggerty is that just go to the scriptures, just listen to our lord. What is he telling you there? But oftentimes, for some of us, that's just not enough, and we want more and more and more. Yeah, and it's a good example of, you know, kind of spiritual poverty that does have to be embraced and John of the cross and that those couple of pages there. He will be commenting on, you know, again, common human weakness to be looking for satisfactions whether in new prayers or new things or people like to have objects that are appealing and adding to these things and the spiritual life is capable also of seeking to accumulate things that are satisfying. And the effort to. Be simple. I think spiritual life, again, mother traits and sisters have taught me so much, but these simplicity of life is one of the signs of a serious growing spiritual life. And we complicate our lives sometimes by never being not finding something satisfying. As an example, by the way, you know, John of the cross for me has been a go to person. I have found what I was looking for in John of the cross. So I haven't I haven't read that much of saint Bernard, for instance, which another priest's friend of mine has studies now studying very carefully. And then I open up a couple of pages and I said, this is nothing like John of the cross that I can see. And sometimes it's not good to try to stretch ourselves too far. If we have found what we need, it's like looking for new experiences in different ways, whether it's objects or new chapels or new places of pilgrimage, to keep a certain simplicity, you know, if we have found God, we have found everything. I think that can be a danger in some ways, at least from my perspective as someone a vocation in the world. That we can get so caught up in that trying to feed that spiritual gluttony that we are overlooking the things that are needed to be cared for right where we're at in the home. And I'm running from here to there and purchasing this and that. And I'm neglecting my family. I'm neglecting my neighbor. I might not be there for my kids in this moment because I have to do this one more thing. And it's between Jesus and me and I've got to do all these things. And I say that in reverence because I think the soul doesn't realize what it's doing. It could be just constantly trying to feed. And then the irony of it is, they'll never be satisfied.

"A novena to saint Bernard of clairvaux, day 9, saint Bernard, you have set. Let us not imagine that we obscure the glory of the sun by the great praise we lavish on the mother. The more she is honored, the greater is the glory of her son. There can be no doubt whatever we say in praise of the mother, gives equal praise to the sun. Oh, blessed Mary. Whoever loves you, honors God. Whoever serves you, pleases God. Lever invokes your holy name with a pure heart, will infallibly receive the object of his petition. Saint Bernard, you have given us this prayer, and with you, we pray. Remember almost gracious virgin Mary, but never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought by intercession was left unaided. Inspired with his confidence, I fly to the old virgin of versions my mother. To thee do I come before the I stand, sinful and sorrowful. "A novena to saint Bernard of clairvaux. Day two. Saint Bernard, you have set. The man who is wise, therefore, will see his life as more like a reservoir than a canal. The canal simultaneously pours out what it receives. The reservoir retains the water till it is filled. Then discharges the overflow without loss to itself. Today there are many in the church who act like canals. The reservoirs are far too rare. You too must learn to await this fullness before pouring out your gifts. Do not try to be more generous than God. Saint Bernard, you have given us this prayer, and with you we pray. Remember almost gracious virgin Mary, but never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection implored thy help or sought by intercession was left unaided. The power of transferring technology for climate adaptation
"Key. Part of adapting to climate. change is prediction in louisiana. Where water is eroding. Huge chunks of land every year that means looking at how increasingly dangerous hurricanes might move water and sand and which areas might flood. And which won't yesterday. We talked with the dutch scientists who make computer models that help make those predictions the water institute of the gulf or based in baton rouge that uses the dutch models to help mitigate erosion and transfers its findings around the country and the world just an errand worth is president and ceo of the water institute. He told me the answers. The institute is looking for though can only come from computers we started something called participatory modeling and what that really means. Is we begin with the community experience. We roll up our sleeves and really work with the community to understand. What are the things that they're most worried about. What are they seeing. What are their ideas for. How to protect and restore the areas that they care the most about we introduce the numerical models to our colleagues in the community. We get their ideas and their feedback. Can we actually take their thoughts. Their suggestions and we put those ideas into our numerical models and we run them then we come back and have another session where we say all right Look at the results of your suggestion. That was remarkable right. Sounds like what you're saying is it's really easy to run a simulation that says this area just won't be inhabitable anymore. The end everyone has to leave and that not only is. There are more empathetic way to do that. But in fact there might be a way to run a better simulation exactly. And if you do it the old fashioned way where you're looking at a series of of projects to protect vulnerable communities and you use the old fashioned benefit cost analysis that is going to absolutely contribute to environmental injustice so we need to value the input of community members and then we need to ensure that it gets the same level of treatment in determining. What solutions do we put forward. What adaptation strategies do we invest in. And where has a community solution to your knowledge ever been adopted so there are several in development and being considered right now in saint bernard there were a series of ideas that were put forward That are being considered. We also did a good bit of work. in participatory modeling in plaquemines parish louisiana. That came up with this sweet of Proposals that are now. Before the governor and the coastal protection restoration authority in louisiana for potential incorporation in the twenty twenty three coastal master. plan here. So we're really scratching the surface of this methodology. And we look forward to doing much more of it. Where else are you finding that. You're models are more applicable in the last decade or two decades. Then you would have imagined in the in the us one of the areas. We've been spending a lot of time. Recently in charleston south carolina there is a recognition that to preserve the deep history and culture. In a place like charleston. They need to invest now on the front end and not wait for the next storm and coastal environments and other parts of the other parts of the world are dealing with these issues and we spent a bit of time recently in argentina. Twenty five kilometers outside of Race in a community that is really trying to prepare for the next twenty five to fifty years of increased innovation so Unfortunately there's no shortage of areas. That need this kind of attention. I was actually going to say feels to me. Like maybe facebook or the city of san francisco which is eventually going to lose. Its airport should probably going absolutely and there's a lot of modeling that shows that a lotta the san francisco bay area for example be underwater in twenty to fifty years. Yes and while we haven't done it as the water institute. A couple of our of our colleagues at the institute before they joined actually did a lot of work in in san francisco for exactly the reasons that you mentioned. Facebook should totally call you. Give them my number.

Shop was a layer of snow it had fallen during the night laying down a few pillowy pristine inches soon own. It would be marked by paws and tales it would be stained yellow again and again and then trampled into slush for now though it was simply leap. Perfect it's so beautiful. Isn't it gorgeous buddy. uh-huh said pickles breaking through the snow like a newborn penguin. He shook himself from tip to tail wiggling and sending snowflakes flying. The A little Chihuahua was dog king's royal assistant but how much assistance he provided was up for debate. Easy for you to say Your Highness. sinus is right. Well it's simple when you squat to pee. Your rile but doesn't as to the ground. If I was meant to be in the calls I'd have more for my great aunt. Norman now was a hairy dog. Looked like a wig. On a mission auto swear dog king laughed and pulled pickles out of the snow lifting him by the scruff of the neck. Like a mother would a puppy. He sat his shaking friend in his favourite flowered bike basket. It was propped up on some crates up and out of the snowy drifts. I will take curve it dog king said and then he started digging on one side of the alley. His big shaggy pause moved mounds of snow with every scoop. Hey John King said Rambo the pit bull had just walked into the alley dragging giant gnarled log in his teeth eighth. Are you digging. I love a good dig. He got room for one more. Come on in said Don King. The digging is fine. Oh boy said Rambo leaping in and out of the snow bouncing on his paws on mcgibbin ticket revving up. I'M GONNA tunnel straight to Australia over here. Snow Rambo eventually stopped fighting the snow and started helping dog king. More dogs talks began to trickle in and some help dig kicking snow wildly and taking the occasional frenzied bite. Still Shivering I thought it was going to be more and more dogs arrived and dog. King took his seat on his throne tongue. Long lulling and snow stuck all in his coat making him look like a mangy polar bear or maybe a cloud that got into the garbage. So ooh what's on the royal scheduled. Today he asked this morning work decorating the alley pickle said it's going to be so pretty perfect and then the party. Yes party lights. Pickles started to a shake with excitement his little body trembling like a snowflake in the wind and the stuff and the square. Sweet Georgia Brown. The squeakers can't wait to sink my teeth into a good Christmas squeaker center. I've been so good I've been the goodness by Don King smiled and greeted the rest of the dogs as they arrived. Some live nearby like dog king pickles and others had homes around the city but they all came for the holiday party. Everyone was especially excited because this year for the first time they were all getting together. Early to decorate rambos giant logs started the pile but it was only the beginning. Pickles Nichols and Annie dragged in a mostly Green Christmas tree. Broadway brought him minora with mismatched candles. One of which looked suspiciously like a hotdog. Other other wrecks brought candles of his own and Luke the golden doodle brought a small drum that he had chewed up only a little just around the edges on and on they came laden with holiday supplies or food or both there were down. Nations with decorations. Pekingese steeping steeping. Tease retrievers Corgis in oodles. rotties and Beagles and poodles. There were Matz as big as reindeer and Mutt so small they could could fit in a gift box. Broadway came with a Cask of hot broth tied around her neck and she was pouring it onto lapping tongues with bad accuracy but good reviews dog. King patted down the alley to where a group was talking. Garland and Crown wobbling atop his royal head. He accepted did a mouthful and apple and knows full of hot broth from Broadway and stood with his friends. So what's with that. Big Log brought sugar pie. The Saint Bernard asked Rambo. That's a yul log. Rambo replied my mom's. Take me to the woods every year and we burned in one with a bunch of their friends. Altogether I get to chew sticks and last year I almost caught a squirrel. It's my favorite holiday. The the dogs all agreed that that sounded like a pretty excellent time. We always do Christmas said pickles. My family gets altogether even even my great aunt. Special Holiday Edition: Elf on the Shelf Puts Pressure on Parents
"Katie you cover personal technology and the role of social media really plays a big role here for some parents when it comes to elf on the shelf, lots of parents post, their most creative ideas on social media and at the same time that can probably add to the pressure. We've been talking about for some of those other parents who were stressed out by all of this. Yeah. I think there's a couple of different things going on with the social media aspect of this that are that are sort of interesting. I mean for one thing when you've got people who are doing over the top posts. But they're really hilarious. I think that that can be very entertaining for for a lot of people not just parents on the other hand, you know, you can have some people who just post with their Elvis up to every day. And maybe the elf is in quite as entertaining as Jenny Novak south is. And and I'll see people, you know, tweeting and being like, okay, I'm really over whatever your elf is up to right now. And then on top of that when you've got, you know, people who maybe don't have the time to come up with elaborate stagings for their else. They might see something that a friend. Is doing and know that their children are friends and just think to themselves like oh my God. My kid is going to find out that his house is super lame and doesn't really do much. So they worry about this sort of this sharing of L stories on the playground, which I'm told actually does happen. I mean kids do talk about this at school. You know, what they're elves got into. And you know, I I didn't hear of any issues of, you know, L jealousy among kids or anything like this. But you can imagine his appearance that if you know, if your kid is friends with someone who's Elvis doing all this out of control stuff, you might wanna you might wanna up things that year. So that you don't feel like, you know, you're disappointing them, you know, certainly an element of pressure. They are to be pretty creative. Let's talk about the business side of this a little bit elf on the shelf and the accompanying book first came out over a decade ago in two thousand five how much has the business grown since. Then how widespread is this tradition? Yes. So I mean, the company told me that there have been thirteen million elves quote adopted. Around the world. And that means that, you know, the else were taken into somebody's home, and that's across nine different countries. So it's certainly, you know, an international phenomenon, and then they've got accessories. Like, they you can have a reindeer pet for your else. They also have something called the Kloss couture collection, which is outfits for your elf. And I mean like I'm looking at one right now, and it's like an elf in in an inner tube with snowflakes on it. And he's got a matching scarf on. There's a Saint Bernard puppy pet situation going on elf can be dressed up as like a toy soldier or a superhero. So there really is this whole like L industry around this, which you know, an aunt of a young boy who's been doing this for years. You know, she said she and her sister. We're like, okay, we're not going to get the close because it's kind of you know, it's over the top. And then, you know, over the years, you do this over and over again, and you run out of ideas. And she was like all of a sudden, we're buying the costumes because. We need more stuff to do with Peter the else. So this certainly seems like a pretty successful business story. That's Wall Street Journal reporter Katie been Lee joining us via Skype from San Francisco to talk about elf on the shelf.
