But right now you're thinking they could just break the team up and destroy it and get ready for next year. Oh, everyone thinks it should be sellers. I don't know about that I think Arthur blank's go to see the fact they've got Detroit at home. then. They've got at Carolina on a Thursday night. There, suddenly three and five before haven't. Denver and then a buy week. And then outside of that by week. Comes the annual Ron delay with the New Orleans saints were just when you think that they stink and there's no shot they go into someplace like the Super Dome in week eleven and beat them how many times have we seen that Chris? It's happened often. They've got to against New Orleans to against Tampa. Literally, you throw the records out when these teams play each other every year we seen eight year in year out card like the AFC West Games out sitting out there..

A Fermentation Celebration (with Sam Pike)

"Hello, and welcome to misinformation Trivia podcasts for ladies and Gentlemen Cool Trivia and sticking it to annoying teams. It pop quiz where your hosts I'm Lauren and I'm Julia Hey, Joel Lord Hey you know it's getting chilly. We love those fall foods they're all coming up. and. One of the things that you can do in the fall I've heard I've never done it before is setup vegetables and fruits for the winter you know like our forth like in the olden days when you had a root cellar when yeah. When he had a root cellar, that's my mother likes to say. So I thought, that was a perfect time for us to bring on a very special guest four guests tober guests hct. which the song we will, we will put insert interesting music here. Hey everybody engineer Josh here instead of the guests over theme to apologize for some of the audio this week's episode we had record this in the afternoon. So we gave our baby to mind Mr Information Co host Steve to take a little nap. Unfortunately she woke up a couple of Times Mason commotion that we wouldn't get picked up on Mike, but it did I did my best. Mix wherever I could sponsor, it was possible or maybe some anise I just wanted to make clear that we're not ignoring her baby to do the podcast. She was just given the business on. That out of the way, please enjoy the show. But we have a wonderful guest today by former intern and a fermentation Guru Sam Pike Sam. Below thanks for being here to the show Sam. Pleasure to be here. Sam I. First thing you guys need to know about him is that he was one of our earliest and our best when I was working at the messy and when we first saw his because you know, you have to submit a CV when you're an intern at the se were various professional and we saw his full name. On the was Samuel Gag now pike and I we were like is this a civil war ghost? Is He? Has, he lived forever and so from there on in and God bless Sam for being such a good sport about we insisted that he was a civil war ghost, the entire time, and as long as I've known him, we continuously poke fun at the fact, and actually at one point Julian I got drunk and made up an entire TVs we planned to TV show around it's called the eternal soldier. He's been wandering the earth for the last two, hundred and thirty years and the theme song is Taylor Swift's welcome to New York because he obviously he writes into your and I'm right. GMT. Yeah, that's our TV. Show, and of course, he comes to New York obviously to solve murders. Yes. Yes as you do. CBS is all procedural. Oh. This is CBS show. I wasn't clear and also not for nothing Sam. I'm so sorry we took your so. We will not be paying you residuals at all. Right, let's get to play myself in the show. Absolutely you even look like a civil war coast. So being a minor and all, but anyway, I'm so sorry to take a any more of your time Sam. Please tell us what you're going to be talking to us today about. All right. So I'm Sam and I'm GonNa Tell You all about fermentation and the different kinds of from anticipation over the history of the science, some of the culture, some of the contemporary stuff too because it's still going it's still evolving in it is still advancing. That's very exciting. I gotTA. Tell you I don't know. Anything. Neither do I mean we've listened to people tell us about how they make wine and beer and Sticks didn't stick Yeah Yeast? Something marist. But we're GONNA find out from Sam Sam please take it away I cannot wait to hear So you guys know a bit about like beer and wine or vaguely about. One of the three kind of pillars of fermentation I'm GonNa talk about so. Wine and beer that's made leasing primarily. The same has made us us to make bread. Et for men's sugars endow. Hall. The other two types are lactoferrin venting often call Hick link that says what's called Lactobacillus the type of bacteria that can birds carbohydrates into Lactic. ACID. and. A. Few other things sometimes, sometimes a little bit of alcohol sometimes, Carbon Dioxide sometimes see the gasset which talk to cobb out more later. Ended the third kind is. It's in America's It's broadly called Koji fermenting. It's what's done to make down. Like soy sauce missile soccer it's hard. It's harnessing mold to ferment. To. ferment. Things, slightly different process Right so And Fuel Freeman feel free to interrupt me at any point to get clarification or. We will we will. Kind of assumed is much. You're used to be at this point. Sam. lactoferrin renting or using lactobacillus. That is what I know. The most is I teach frequent workshops on it's what I can and doing daily. If I should camera slightly he would see just a huge row of Sauerkraut sitting just above my. Yeah. Saint Ours and Jar Sam's Instagram is basically just bubbling jars of of who knows what that he forged from the woods? Yes. Exactly. Am I not wrong you're not. The worst part is a horrible habit of not labelling everything. Guess what stuff is in how old it is. It's never not been fine. So unsafe there. Oh, okay jars. Not sure. Sure of this is bad or not. Guess we'll try it. Snow tested. So, what leftover mentoring is, it's harnessing this bacteria that. Is. A little bit of chemistry right here that I don't I barely know about what it does. It takes carbohydrates newco simple sugars in which are the chemical makeup is c six, h twelve, O six and breaks down into a few other substances the most important one being lactic acid, which is see three, eight, six, three. And the reason that wants to sewn Horton is that lactic acid drops the key age of the substance of the buner making end makes it last longer preserve Okay. So. If you just let the food out, normally, it would just kind of like. Go. Get bad mold bad smell. Awful. This smells awful. The some people a lot of people, but it's still perfectly safe to eat even make some of the nutrients and minerals a lot more accessible. And the way people are the hardest. This bacteria easily been harnessing at for thousands of years is by adding salt. So that period that produces this lactic acid it can. Stay withstand able an acidic environment, but also a salty environment which things cannot do. So by adding salt, the cabbage is that bacteria will just quickly take over multiply in. ferment everything until it's perfectly say. That's interesting. It's incredibly easy to do at home for like. I mean, it was done accidentally first centuries think about it. The microscopes were invented until relatively recently, people really didn't know a dockyard east even was they just they kind of knew the process entitles like magic or a gift from God or something They're alive for theories they're really need them the basics remain laughter permitting is a vessel. It. More only time places. You'll see like crosser. Back of some sort. The easiest way to do it at home is just take a mason jar can old pickle jar or a refresh Lee bought Mason Jar, just. Cut Up some cabbage mix it with some salt N. just packed their real tight in. Let it for that. See you don't have to add any liquid or anything. So we're talking about SAUERKRAUT. You don't get any liquor sour talents was so frightening there's enough liquid in the cabbage itself OSMOSIS SIS in like chopping the cabbage bricks enough cell walls at all this water just gets leached at the cabbage in submerged the cabbage totally in its own liquids. That's that had no idea. There are few other vegetables like tomatoes are the same but something like that hickel cucumber. You could slice and mashed us that out but the relief roast texture. Yeah yes. He leave it whole than you make what's call it salt brine, which is just water and salt mixed together and just with the cucumbers in that, they just start permitting on their own.

The first time by the way someone was saying someone was saying a when I was picking my bracket at the beginning of the postseason before the playoffs started and I pick my bracket and I had the raise in the dodgers and the world series and someone was like Oh. Wow. Yeah. What you're you just pick in the fucking to number one seeds how interesting and I was like well. I'M NOT GONNA pick teams just to be edgy like that's how I feel is going to make it to the world series and that's who did make role. I served I'll throw you out the astle prediction at the beginning of the year. That's that's the role I served. I'm I'm okay. But when the postseason starts a month ago he throwing. Yes, my bracket was my bracket had. The raise in the dodgers and the world series. Here we are raised dodgers world series and I remember saying That like it's not uncommon for the two best teams to make it to the world series. Remember two, thousand, thirteen, they think that was the last time I I don't. Remember a time that happened after that and as it turns out, that was the last time that it happened the Boston. Red Sox had the best record in the American League and Saint Louis Cardinals had the best record in the National League they met up in the world series and here again, we have it seven years later dodgers best record, Tampa best record, and this will be your world series and you've got a great pitching matchup. In Game One which means that we're going to see these guys. Potentially. Potentially. Three times. What do you got? Who You got who you got game one. I.

These doctors got COVID-19, now they're suffering the serious, mysterious symptoms of 'long COVID'

"Hi It's Natasha. Mitchell with science friction. I'll be the first admit that as a GP price all of I was pretty skeptical of things. I certainly had sympathy for for conditions like FIBROMYALGIA. But I didn't have the empathy that I have now. I didn't understand it I. Really didn't get it. And Gosh if I could go back and speak to myself as a GP prior to all of this, I know that I would have been much better doctor then and I will hopefully be a much stop to now. As Corona virus cases explode again in the you kind across Europe today three doctors from the UK share confronting personal experiences of what's being called long covert. I have seen too many cases on nine of people not being heard not being Nessin to. That symptoms and their concerns not being validated. I've seen heartbreaking stories of people just being dismissed of seeing heartbreaking stories of people losing their jobs. And I am very lucky that I have a platform where I can speak up and try and get long covert recognizes melnace. The term long covert is being used to describe a whole cluster of symptoms and afflictions many extremely disturbing and disabling that lingering on some people after they've been infected with the SARS Cov to virus thousands across the world are now finding solidarity on social media and in virtual support groups that are popping up and long covert. To not discriminate healthy people young people, people who apparently had a mild case of covid nineteen. And every system in their bodies can be affected up until the last a week or two. The concept of long caved has been dismissed by quite a lot of people even in the medical sphere many my colleagues have been unwell since March and have really struggled to get any kind of medical inputs until the last couple of months those weren't hospitalized with the illness would just sort of left to get on with it. It's the classic thing a suspect. It might even be a bloke thing do not for long enough it will go away. Yeah. Diminish it ignore it hope it's not their. Own I another thing to worry about uh, suspect always going through people's minds and that will include medics politicians policies such as civil servants, everybody. But they will be left with the long term consequences and in terms of the total health burden that will weigh exceed whatever acute covid to us by the time of comes on. So we facing another pandemic this one silent confusing and hard to diagnose knows a pandemic of long coverted. I'm Dr Amy Small I'm thirty nine and I'm Jay P in Lothian in Scotland a gorgeous part of the world in the Scottish lowlands and before the pandemic Dr smalls life was a when I think back it was busy and chaotic and getting up at six thirty every morning and out house by seventh day and yet as a family, we were very active and very busy but it work back in February and March. I'm in colleagues were on high alert the sense of impending doom that we felt on those first few weeks moore seeing reports of huge numbers of people dying in. Italy. In just thinking gosh you know. Is that coming away at it was just really really scary I'm Dr Natalie Mcdermott I'm an academic clinical electra at King's College London and she specializes in Pediatric Infectious Diseases Dr McDermott is no stranger to deadly infections Ebola cholera now coronavirus she's been on the front line of the Mall I was working in Liberia in in the capital Monrovia in July twenty fourteen as as cases of started spread very rapidly our more queseda flowing because we had so many dead bodies but we didn't have sevices coming to pick them up so the burial teams weren't Well. They were trying their best, but they were limited as well at during that time two of my colleagues one of whom was on medical director for treatment facility they became infected with. I saw a space about thirty percent of my patients that died in those first few weeks. I was in Liberia that he percent of them were health coworkers what Natalie witnessed firsthand was hellish but going is her as a doctor she went on to do a PhD, investigating the genetics of asa sipped ability to a bowl avars disease. And when Covid nineteen heat I was working in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Great Ormond Street Hospital. When we started to see a surge of cases of what we now who multi-system inflammatory syndrome children previously healthy children started falling very ill they come in generally unwell but looking okay and then within a few hours sometimes but maybe you set me within twenty four hours. Many of them would suddenly drop their blood pressure and they and become very touchy. It said it heart rate would become very fast at that stage it was thought children were only mildly affected by. Covid nineteen and on the whole, it seems they are but the Natalie and colleagues found all lot of them did test positive in terms of the throat swaps full cave nineteen they tested positive for antibodies to cave in nineteen either actually at the beginning of that onus or at some point Jerry net illness doctrine failing on consulting genetic pathologists to Saint Mark's hospital in Harrow in London and Sinn. Vincent's Hospital in Dublin Ireland in filing is a practicing doctor and later in the genetics of bail and related cancers collaborating with colleagues around the world including here in Australia. At the beginning of the pandemic back in March whiles looked pretty safe or think. To identify, cases in Wales. H. One about forty kilometers outside of me. So eastern West. So you get the impression whereas almost none of it about. So the odds of you catching, it must be next to nothing.

"We're Roland Taylor how you doing. Amazing or you Gus Rocket? Or happy to chat I, think the last time but actually when. You visit riches event rich. Shefrin in Florida. It was right before the. Movie Madness. For the world shut down did man. A massive gavitt gathering of people for twenty four hours. Like the covert thing wasn't even on my radar at that point like I hadn't even been thinking about it and then like within a week after we got back it just like went crazy. I think the travel bad had just happened and and then it was like. Everything went to zero. I remember thinking I'm like there's no way. There's no way that everything's GonNa shut down like it was in Europe and then starbucks closed and I was like it's over. Over. starbucks capitulated. We're all done. Point and then it was not that long over here. That was like the only thing that actually somehow did reopen I or stay open ended. They just had the longest lines in the world I might not no one makes coffee. Tea. Sarah Okay I was just in Charlotte. It is bad. They're still because. do do you go to starbucks? They could have like three people in the shop saint we're open here. Everything here is open in Nashville because we're not traders. Charlotte. Still I remember just being like what is going on was like fifty people at Align de man I would not wanna live here right now. To the Queen's city but. Put your mask on and going there I guess right did he goes still kind of like half shut like half like restaurants and stuff are kind of open like minimum capacity I think our gym's open yet but I think Close I don't. That's why. On. Gyms opened up because there's a gym in La Hoya that I'm Jay described to you because every time Jim they opened August thirtieth August thirty first. Let me guess you go to dit. La Hoya fit club or something. Yeah. Yeah. Because standard bracket stand to our buddy goes to be so yes, I. Do think it's open because I've heard him say Nice Nike solved. That I know that. Much to the gym. A. Gym. On A. Workout harder. So we're talking about working out I don't think but gives a scoop man because we. We've been following you guys for a long time you in Chris Evans you guys are partners traffic and funnels a physical newsletter. What the memo's I think it's called right Think, they changed the name to insiders access but. Hey Go. Yeah. It's cool because it's like short punchy just gets to the point I think monthly. Dirt cheap. So it's kind of a no brainer. That gives us a scoop of your story, dislike a little brief background, and maybe you know at t.f, trafficking funnels and all that. So. I started freelance as a copywriter in two thousand fifteen. and. I'm at Chris in a mastermind that was run by Ryan Leveque time, and if you haven't had heavies awesome already know him. So he he was a mentor of sorts to me back in the day. I met Chris in I. Think it was called like. You guys remember this this NASA got on facebook next level or next level masterminds Ryan levesque's thing. Yeah I remember. Yeah. Now, you can't call anything next level because it's so cliche but he was one like back in the day it was also. Who some next level shit back and it was the next level stuff. Exactly. So, Chris was doing advertising just space book advertising and I was doing copywriting and we met. Some. Of the stuff that I was doing, wanted it for some of his clients. So we kinda disconnected we sent clients back and forth for about six months in eventually was just like the list of partner up and see what we can do because I'm sitting implants you're sending me your clients, but if we could put it under one roof, you know it'd be amazing started agency. So we did the agency thing for a couple of months and it was great we. In the first three months we got up to like twenty, five, thirty game we started consulting in January -cause we were. We were doing work for people, but there were friends were asking us what was going on we that we started doing education because of that Excuse me a little Kobe remnants here. Not, really all. Now really okay. So we stopped, we actually hired a guy named Sam in January of two thousand sixteen and he looked at our economics in our business model and he was like you guys are GonNa make way more money. If you just teach the ropes rather than doing it, you're like I oh, you know we we kinda like doing it and but we got so busy on the consulting side that our prices were like two hundred brands of the funnel people don't WanNa pay that. Ended up. Yeah. We kinda discontinued it just from pricing so His been it's it's actually just hit. It's five year mark. says. It was actually started in September of two, thousand fifteen don't. We just crossed over that threshold twenty twenty. So it's been around for five years. started. Go really fast two, thousand, Sixteen Golf we were at half a million dollars a month. By the time we got to the beginning of two thousand seventeen be Kinda got stuck there for a little bit lassoed out of two thousand eighteen we started hiring a team did everything wrong lost the team tried again lost that team to but by the? Nineteen it pretty good team. We had a really good operator who came in our coo in we started sales mentor. The beginning of nineteen sort of wealth gap mid two, thousand, nineteen. We just acquired a business in Australia a couple of months ago. So now we have A. Four or five businesses kind under this portfolio of companies anti is it goes back and forth from being the biggest to the second business at biggest business actually. So kind will know for is becoming the second largest in the company of the portfolio companies

Grappling with the Gray

"Today I am thrilled to welcome back Yonathan Golsen. Is Director of ethical imperatives LLC teaching professionals have good ethics is good business and the benefits of intellectual diversity. He's a keynote and Ted ex speaker trainer coach and Community Rabbi as well as a repentant hitchhiker recovered circumnavigator. Former newspaper columnist and retired high school teacher in Saint Louis. His sixth book is grappling with the Grey and ethical handbook for personal success and business prosperity. Thanks so much for coming back and having a conversation with me honest him. A. Delighted Diana was looking back through my files and I saw that you were the ninth interview that I? Given since I've become a professional speaker and now I've done about seventy of them and the one with you I think store ranks among the best that I've done. So you brought the best of me and. SET The bar. Very. Well I have to say it was one of my favorite conversations that you are one of my favorite guests so. I'm so glad to have been able to help you get into this whole realm of podcast res. so so I want. So congratulations on the book by the way you. I am really tremendously impressed with it and. But I WANNA talk about obviously ethics. And? Most leaders are many leaders. Put Ethics in the soft skill category. Ned restarted. Okay, go ahead 'cause that's a problem. Isn't it? Yeah. Sounds, skills is one of those. Terms that we use or some IOS for something that is sort of optional. Or we'll get to it after we get to all the important stuff. And as I've been discussing this more and more. I keep tweaking and refining. My definition ethics. which ultimately has to do with recognizing our place in the world. And recognizing the impact that our actions have on those around us. Because that's. What forms relationships? And success in every aspect of her leads is all about relationships family business community. Nationally, locally. And you see the fallout. I mean. Another election. When you know every four years, we think it can't get worse than this and that it dies. If we if we would cultivate the sensitivity for ethical speech ethical behavior. What I call the mindset. That would really transform our conversations are relationships and. Really everything that the shapes the quality of our lives. Boy I so agree with you I think ethics and and maybe more. So now because of. Everything that we are witnessing in the world. That is so incredibly. Central. In in my opinion to how we show up in the world. that it really needs to be relegated doing more important. Place in business and politics seventy. Child rearing. Certainly, as a rabbi had come at everything from the illogical or biblical point of view as well and in Jewish tradition. We understand that the the second temple in Jerusalem, which was destroyed by the Romans in your seventy. the underlying cause of the breakdown in Jewish society that led to the temple's destruction. Was the Jews did not go beyond the letter of the law. and. That's a pretty astonishing comment. I mean, they were keeping the law they were following the rules they were in compliance. But they used the law as an excuse. To circumvent the spirit of the law and the spirit of the lies alternately what keeps us? Society. Healthy.

Tanya Rad Breaks Down 'The Bachelor' Matt James' Contestants

"Had Chris. Harrison. On from the Bachelorette I bet you didn't know that I saw Chris with the shirt off at the beach. You didn't share that Info with US until I was waiting to confront him. Always wind confront him. He and his girlfriend having a romantic little day at the beach and then. I interrupted that's right. I interrupted their romance. I mean it was just by chance to see the guy I'm like that is Chris Harrison from the drain. Did you like just did you? Know. We distance spoke and then I said go enjoy your love. Joy Romance. Call me if there's a wedding got the host of the Bachelor about GonNa Wedding Right. All right now anyway, we had him on and he keeps saying the Promo. eclair congratulations you single handedly blew up the Bachelorette. He also said that when he found out whatever it is, she did he was not angry or upset about it. It was a challenge to him. So me it sounds like something happened where like oh? Gosh. How are we going to fill these hours of the whole season up? We gotTA figure out a pivot but he was not you know it was a pointless interview 'cause he gave nothing. Like, it was just for him to talk about we saw each other with our shirts off that was. That was the substance that happened. So you missed nothing if you hear. True but the guy says, of course, can't tell you anything. Well, of course, don't book yourself then Chris Well, he gave us a little sneak peek at the bachelor season because he said that he was there at location and he says he's at the in the Bachelor bubble right now he looks like he's yeah he he said there are four seasons where he is. It looks like the leaves returning some guessing he's in upstate New York. Now. Right. The leaves turn there. Anyway I bring all of this up because we have the potential suitors for the first, what the first black male bachelor in the franchise history, and so bit a black male bachelor. Correct. There has never been a black male bachelor it's hard to believe. It's the truth. It's the truth and shooters. I don't want it to my own horn but beep I did pick dale or Clare. Season even before the season even like was filming or anything. Clare's the Bachelorette well, I know but the rumor in the rumor mill, he seems to be just the name people are holding onto yourself because it's not been confirmed. Nothing's been confirmed none of Kim term to on rumor I'M GONNA to on rumor been onto onto. Okay. So they have now rolled out the girls for the season up the bachelor and they're doing things differently now, they basically ruled them out on facebook, which is so interesting only put their photo and like their name and their age they used to give like I dunno just used to be so different, very formal with the bachelor. Now, it's kind of a little more informal on facebook people can leave comments and stuff. So my pick for Matt, James Is. She's a thirty, two year old from Ethiopia and I just the VIBE I get from her photo. She is just like super q Yeah. Like I get this like happy from her and so they did put up more. Than I think we'll end up being on his season because it was more than forty and that's they usually don't do that. So I, don't know if it's for Cova reasons or or whatnot but and then we are learning that one of the potential women for Matt may have dated him over the summer. Her name is Madison Nelson and allegedly she was dating Matt. While his best friend Tyler Cameron was dating gee-gee had dean. If you guys remember that love story I know. It's so good. I know. and. So she comes in and I don't know I'm kind of like not into these people coming back that don't have they're not on the same playing field. I. Feel like all the suitors should be on the same playing field no, what are you? By Saint Plainfield just. So I'm clear because this this Madison Nelson Dated Matt James That doesn't says she has a history with them. Yeah. There's a conference on the ice has been broken right? That's stacking the deck I agree with now I'm up in arms. I'M UP IN ARMS TO I'm not super I don't really like that someone on the show. This is all allegedly, but there are some photos of them. So they definitely know of each other we don't know. That gives you an advantage because you have a connection of some sort. You have blind I'm with you on one hundred percent I'm protesting. You guys, watch it and tell me. Yeah,

Would then rule the New Kingdom of Virginia. The plan didn't work. My name's Moxi and this is your brain on facts. Why didn't they Rebel this is a question that should have occurred to every American schoolchild when studying the Civil War and slavery. Why didn't they Rebel the truth of the matter is they did more than one third of the population in the south in the eighteenth Century or enslaved people in the 1943 Book American negro slave revolts historian Herbert aptheker estimated. There were over 250 rebellions of enslaved people in the US between 1619 and 1865 some historians put that number over 300. So rebellion was a lot more common than we were led to believe and even if enslaved people weren't taking apart in an armed Uprising many would fight back in small ways painting food work slowdowns feigning injury. Damaging equipment and so forth the new world had slave rebellions basically as long as there were people enslaved. They're the first documented Rebellion taking place on San Domingo on Christmas Day 1522 some rebellions managed to make it into the history books and pop culture like the seizure of the Amistad when a boat full of kidnapped Africans over through their captors and took control of the ship to both win their freedom and be memorialized in a film by Steven Spielberg. The first recorded slave revolt in the United States happened an hour down the road from me in Gloucester Virginia in 1663. White indentured servants included enslaved Africans in their plan to do away with their master and be free another servant betrayed them and was rewarded with his freedom. It would be nearly twenty-five years as far as we know off. Before the first all black slave revolt which again took place in Virginia. The largest slave rebellion outside the United States was the successful Insurrection of black slaves that overthrew French rule and abolished slavery in Saint domingue establishing the agenda nation of Haiti that proved unequivocally that the enslaved could defeat their captors and live free that precedent frightened and slavers on the mainland suck slave owners actively repressed any sign of rebellion laws dictating when where and how slaves could congregate were enacted to prevent Insurrection and quavo light paranoia. It's the same reason the enslaved were forbidden from learning to read or write words spread ideas and your captives May develop repetto Mania wage medical condition and let this make you grateful your doctor actually had to go to school the mental illness that caused black slaves to want to run away. Yeah, that's what these folks told themselves in case you thought the narrative myth of the happy slave was a recent invention. With Plantation populations under tight control Insurrection would tend to come from the cities or parts of the country where there were lots of small farms rather than one big one. We don't have time today to talk about all three hundred rebellions. We'll just hit on some of the ones that are most likely to make you ask why you're high school history textbook included between zero and one slave rebellion. Well at the same time definitely mentioning white John Brown at Harpers Ferry. Records are a bit spotty for our first subject the Stono Rebellion in South Carolina in 1793. History is colored both by the mouth of the teller and the ear of The Listener with their preconceptions, and we only have one firsthand contemporary account. Early on a late-summer Sunday morning 20 enslaved people gathered near the Stono River Why Sunday morning a recently passed law required all woke up men to carry firearms with them to church on Sunday. So the rebels made their move when the men and at least some of the guns would be elsewhere.

Statue Of Mother Cabrini Unveiled In Lower Manhattan

"Governor Cuomo will be in lower Manhattan this morning, unveiling a special statue in this Columbus Day. And let's hear about that from WCBS reporter Steve Burns. The statue of Mother Cabrini is set to be unveiled in Battery Park City. Looking directly at the Statue of Liberty, says Governor Cuomo. The statue arose out of what Cuomo saw as an affront towards Italian Americans by Mayor Deblasio. A poll on which women should be honored with a statue in the city showed mother Cabrini in first place, but Cabrini was passed over. Cuomo announced his own plans to put up a statue of the first American Saint. She served the poor and the immigrants. She had boundless energy and unlimited capacity, Exasperated de Blasio told New York one last year. The debate was sad all around. Why don't we just all work together to get things done? Rather than decide to spend days and days having a fake manufacturing conflicts? Cuomo says he will be in a tent. It's for the statue unveiling and de Blasio is invited as well. It would be their first event together since early March. Steve Burns. WCBS NEWS radio 80

Modest Mussorgsky: The Mighty Handful

"Hello welcome to classics for Kids I'm Naomi Lewin. The mighty handful may sound like a rock band or a bad babysitting job and the mighty five may sound like a basketball team. But both of those were nicknames for a group of Nineteenth Century Russian composers interested in developing a Russian sound for classical music. Obviously, there were five of them. Mighty handful refers to five fingers. The ringleader of the mighty handful was mealy Bollock, a pianist and composer who wanted to promote nationalism in Russian music in music nationalism refers to a south. That's distinct Taylor country. Sometimes, that's done by using folk tunes, rhythms, or dance forms and a piece of music, but it can also mean including historical characters or legend from a region. While Akira, wrote an overture in which he put pieces of three Russian folk songs. Eventually Bala of became director of the Russian Court Orchestra. But for a while he quipped music and went to work for the Russian railroad in fact, every member of the mighty five held a nonmusical job at one time or another. Alexander Borodino was never a professional musician. He was a professor of chemistry. From the time he was a kid Borodino was very musical but he decided to study science instead he wound up founding the first Russian School of Medicine for women. After he met Bollock. The great cheerleader for Russian Music Borodino. Began composing. But since science and medicine took up most of his time, he didn't get a chance to finish very many pieces. One of the other members of the mighty hand full wound up putting Borodin's opera Prince Ebor into its final form, the man who cleaned up Laura Dean's music and music by quite a few other composers was Nikolai rimsky-korsakov. Rimouski. Korsakov was in the navy when he met up with Mealy, Bollock Kiro and decided that. Should be his life rimsky-korsakov quit the maybe to study composition after teaching himself to compose he wound up as a professor of composition at the new conservatory. In Saint Petersburg Russia rimsky-korsakov was great at orchestration knowing what instruments to assign to which lines of music in order to get the best sound. He finished a lot of pieces that some of his fellow Russians left unfinished and he also rearranged a lot of music some of which didn't necessarily rearranging. The. Last member of the mighty five was Cesar. Has An unusually UN Russian sounding last name because his father was French. In fact, he was a French military officer who decided to stay in Russia after being taken prisoner there while fighting with Napoleon's army. says. We started out in the military too but you guessed it after he met Mealy Bala. Cesar qe became a composer. Even, though he had no Russian ancestors, his mother was Lithuanian qe became a big champion of Russian music just like the other members of the mighty handful. There, you have the other for Russian composers who made up the mighty handful. Bella Kiev Alexander Barra Dean Cesar qe and Nikolai rimsky-korsakov. "Problem is that they got too much to worry about. Go to see you know they probably the forty niners. I just don't think they're gonNA make the playoffs. That's what I took away here. I mean there's a decent chance they can catch the Vikings. It's not great but what I love is that they're just running the ball period and maybe it's because what he said they're not falling behind early on. It's not like todd. Gurley is setting the world of fire. He's averaging about four yards a carry in these last couple of games but he's still getting the ball all twenty five and twenty three times. And that's what makes Jared Goff more effective. He's been playing great way. They've been Todd Gurley. Head over one hundred yards combined rushing rushing and receiving but for me the rams defense did not give up a touchdown in this game. That team right now. They're dangerous. They're peaking at the right time. They can pass the Vikings for that. Sure the odds I mean it's it's twenty four. Seventy seventy bucks you. Frank thinks it's not okay. Sodano how about you I do too Tony. I think went went out. I think they could be Dallas. beat the niners. I look at yesterday's game. You know I love the domination of the line of scrimmage. They did that they were talking. They were creative. Look at those jet sweeps that Sean mcvay was running again. A Lotta guys putting dirt on. Sean McVeigh and his creativity. We're starting to see all can turn on. Sean mcvay There George. He was the one that said I. It was stupid for not doing what we did. Anyone else know that. Saddam's year for those in the scrimmage in the trenches. I know that we move by herself. Three he's not able to run as well as he should be able to As well as he knows and that's frustrating him Wouldn't handle the right way and our training room so It is what it is. Dr Baker Mayfield talking about Odell Beckham junior kitchens coach by the way said maybe not talk about other people's injuries there. That's what he said. There was also the J. glaze report. That Beckham is telling opposing teams and coaches. Come get me out of here. Beckham says that's not the case that's been like every every other week Israel. What do you buy what you sell from sleep? Well I'm selling that. That's the only reason the training room that he had an issue all season long. I'm sure their chemistry was not built properly Odell Beckham out. Ota's not participating and everything else and so. There's a bunch of reasons but in terms of Baker Mayfield I think he's essentially having his teammates back. He's giving Odell Beckham. A reason to stick around at your quarterbacks always GonNa have your back regardless as opposed to everybody else saying hey he wants to be on the door. I think Baker.

"Win and the best resume. It's not even much of an argument to me but I do think that anybody that would have ended up. Playing Clemson would have felt on lucky. Because we've been holding clemson up to the standard of last year to this standard of. Oh they need to be good to be number one. And just because maybe they didn't beat North Carolina by enough. I think we're going to face them was going GONNA be upset and like George. I think they're GONNA win. Yeah the committee got right. If I'm Utah I blew it. I had a chance to get into the top four but maybe the best story worry will end up. Being jalen hurts a guy the Alabama transfer wins. You Games win the National Championship. The pretty cool. It's already a great story. He's made the playoffs but Alabama dinner. Yeah we'll move on Rams twenty-eight see off well the La maybe you've been looking for all season and a regression. The seahawks folks maybe even flirted with old season. LA's next three games at Dallas. At San Fran hold for Arizona while still again back to the Detroit who was at chargers orders own packers home. Bears can see right there the odds so they might be bullseye wop rats and a t sixteen high to get there but what he would did you find yourself last night looking at reassessing the rams more or the seahawks just the rams got to the party too late that it's already started started and it's GonNa continue without. The problem was that they got behind and Games. Golf really hadn't played well until we've just seen recently. They're probably using girly the way they're supposed to. "Yes that tells you a lot that Jimmy Garoppolo could win a shootout on the road remember. They're down with fifty three seconds to go because they didn't convert the two point conversion the saints. I'm talking about. He marched them right down the field so on a day where their deep Anson have it. Jimmy Garoppolo had and that play by kiddle that is the defining moment omen of San Francisco. And you didn't believe San Francisco could beat New Orleans or even go into New Orleans now seeing the NFC as it is. Frank are the forty niners the favorite. I would say right now because a very good chance they'll get to play home games. which will be a big difference in the NFL? Gutierrez Frank. It looks like sounds like you had a rough rough weekend man up there also. This is crazy impressive. Sometimes sometimes you can just simplify things and say hey they the forty niners have not scored this many points on the road since nineteen ninety-three this was a heck of an exclamation point type of performance. And you can say about both sides of the ball New Orleans when they're at home on their defense had been playing great Several Times this year and San Francisco's defense had been the thing that's carrying them. But if we want to be critical of Jimmy Garoppolo and wonder what how good what. He isn't times that they're winning in spite of him that we have to give him credit for this because this was a masterful performance and coming at the end even I mean we want to get killed all that credit but he Jimmy Garoppolo Rappalo got their made the right decision. I think this makes them the favorites to me by the way frank voice. That's because of that jets dolphins game right in your face Gutierrez heated. Nobody cares about. We'll get to that game later but nobody cares about that game. Would he page. Would the forty niners show you well Israel first of all. That's the first time in history that we've ever had in NFL history. We've ever had a forty eight forty six hundred bursary. Wow is that. That's something but Garoppolo. We talked about the backward. George was picking them as the best team in the league. The fact that they were winning almost inspired him and then he turned ended around. Here's what I think makes the forty niners now. The favored the NFC. That's because they were prepared last night for Seattle and you say what does that mean need that is the strongest indoor crowd anywhere in the NFL in the King to pardon me in the superdome now go to Seattle which is allowed his crowd anywhere. Outdoors Doors Orient Doors and they'll be prepared for it. They said they handled in environment last night. While they'll have to do it once again in the last game of the season and I think if you look ah forgive me. Look at the schedules of all those teams that the forty niners position now. They've proven it with their defense now. They proved it with their offense and their quarterback. Let let me just see that chalkboard behind you right now. What page is that a banana nut muffin? Duct taped all right. There are basil. I see what you're doing all. Alright Georgia donohoe. Take the points because he had Francisco weeks ago but what did they prove last night. Well I'm going to disagree with woody about winning in spite of Garoppolo Garoppolo in his last three games the packers the Ravens and the Saints Game Has One hundred twenty nine quarterback rating and again seven touchdowns only one interception against three playoff-caliber type teams. The other thing that I look at his George biddle you look at his career thus far how important he is not only to grapple a success but just the overall not success in the first three seasons historically only three other guys have more yards ahead. Mike Ditka Rob Gronkowski in this. Offense is humming at the right time to go with the defense that had been basically been the key to their success early. I sold you want to add the last word and that key play that fourth in one play once again in the safety of the Saints Chauncey Gardiner. Johnson he was involved in so many big plays that kept every drive alive. Important Dr Alive for San Francisco. So if I'm Sean Payton. I'm concerned about my pets. We were up thirteen. We had a lead in the final minute and we couldn't get it done interesting. You said that after the game he was exasperated. He just lost. It was a great game but he just lost the game. Allow Forty eight points but the first thing he said was about the offense like we had some more chances to score points. brees threw five touchdown scored forty six. If you look at the defense a little bit all right all right we've been warned we're GONNA move on we look at the chiefs.

"But even before. That's that islet. In sent Lucia. It was actually used by pirates about free hundred years whereas before the British even came to try and fight to the French so there was a pirate. Their name is jammed walk because he was missing one food so he had one foot on one wooden foot and he used to sit there and look out for all the other ships passing around coming to the new world and then and he would attack them with these men take over the ship an EBA the people would be initiated into his camp or he would kill them or use them as slaves for him and his fellow element. Yep So there's nothing he stay on that island by there. Let's up Caribbean you stand. You could touch it and think and feel it will. One thing was a little confusing using for me is when I look on Google maps. The island is no longer an island. Is it an island and Google maps is wrong or has it now is an ele- peninsula so it wasn't island for two years ago but we still pigeon island. Pj Let our first prime minister build a causeway ause we so there is a long stream of beach that was built to connect the Minna on. PJ and that long stream of Beach Schnell that causeway now is around resorts. We've Sandoz. Also they're one of the best sanders in Saint Lucia survived. They're beautiful. Oh Golden Sand beach wonderful place to come and Bay and enjoy the Dan. Just relax and pigeon itself has free beaches over its own got it okay when you say. The sandals is a wonderful place to enjoy the beach what the laws are in Saint Lucia. Can I enjoy the beach resort. Even if I am not staying there. So that's an amazing question. Less editors ask it in Cilicia on beaches are public. Okay I wondered what if that was the case from what you said. Yeah you don't have to go in front of Sandals of course there's little like you can see whether resorts starts so then. Somebody might be intimidated. Mutated to go there but there are long stretches that's available to us from in that same location. That could go freely. You could always go in front of the results. Also if you want to. But there's nothing need unless you really want to Dan. That's okay. You can totally do that. So it's public. I think lucians would throw a riot if one of our bitches became private. Well I'm familiar with that in Hawaii. It's the same thing where every beach has to have public access and public parking even if it's a resort but that is not true everywhere in the world and so that's why I wanted to clarify that. That's a great it question but our beaches are like a big part of our life. I let people into turn us. We couldn't go there anymore. Who Good looking fall? What is going to surprise me about going to Saint Lucia other than the nation which threw me and I before we started recording? What's good to surprise you? It depends on what type of stuff surprises you. Maybe you'll be surprised on how whiny our roads I noticed that. Yeah because it's a Montana's island especially when you going towards the south and the southwest the roads can become very wendy will as an example of that for instance. We mentioned that you're GONNA fly into the airport in the south. And then you're you know if you drive up to the region that we were talking about souffle early then it's only thirty four kilometers not even thirty four miles so eight hundred nine hundred miles at a fifty three minute drive way. Are you talking about. Is the northern Rodney yet. So when you have come up to Rodney be appreciated on dry but the island is so beautifully telling Wolf uh-huh especially if you have a nice relaxing time and see someplace new experience some of them using things that we said there. Easter experienced Allah Lila. It's totally with it. I find excellent will before we get to some of my wrap up questions. Is there other things that you want to really highlight that. We can't stop talking about Saint Lucia to we tell people about what definitely inside Lucia. especially if you're a history level you should definitely visit Alice. City called quelled cast cheese so some of the things you could see in the city is some of the old French architecture am in the buildings and stuff like that. You would see a very pyramid shaped roofs and some of the other N- french-style all very busy to northern part the island but further south at grows Ebay. Right we're we're like so then an also there. There is the Laziest isn't Cathedral of Immaculate Conception so it's one of the biggest Caribbean Catholic churches and there is this is where the first time in Catholic history that the holy family. The Bible's already family. Jesus chose effort. Mary were actually actually portrayed in the image of black man so a black family. I'm the activists who did that was one of our premier. As on the island he actually designed flags will and he did that because he said because of our slavery pass because our population is predominantly African right African heritage block so because of our enslaved pass for the people to be able to embraced the Catholic religion considering that the Bible was used to enforce the slavery for example Slaves Obey Massoud. Pseudo beat a lot right so unseens Jesus always was portrayed as wide and you're looking up to him. The only way that he believed that we are the population would be able to embrace. The Catholic. Megyn after a issue of slavery would be could see guate- reflected in our image Asia so it's almost similar to what happened in the woods now with people want to see representation so he did something Erotica Ika by placing a God that was usually portrayed in the image of the life money and pension him in the image of the people the island which are predominantly black. I think he did something unusual. I don't know if I'd go as far as radical considering. How many non-jewish Jesus I've seen pictures of you've unusual okay? While he was unusual for our part of the woods our culture so then he got rid of backlash. But one of the Chech- at the time were kind of worried about it. But when Pope John Paul actually came down and he's sorry he gave him a Vatican medal for it because it was so different it was for us it was quite radical and new and revolutionary January. So it back church. You also see a lot of blacks in sports trade so there answer many of course but a few are he mid showed he pins at them and place them there so that the people of the island would see themselves reflected in their religion so it wouldn't see record religion for the people at Northam. He also Pinch Ed the beautiful paintings that he created on the windows with stained glass and of course there the nuns Mary and these individuals offending the image of black people at the top in the roof Beautiful paintings of European since that will pin from France a hundred years of goal so there's a mixture mixture of the people of the island taking on a sheep and Tikkun Beckley in very legion embiid. Also the traditional European elements elements of their religion mixed together in one in. The church is very colorful. So it's a very light church doesn't have Very light the light airy feel to it because he doesn't have the traditional huge round water. Pila Ella that other Catholic churches would have it has a little wooden elements. Yes and it's very tall very colorful and then when you actually come on you you could see the lights passing for the colorful windows and do offer. Different acts mixture of European and African influenced act. DOC Immature as Catholic Church. It's really stunning. And then in custody. Also there is the Museum gesture that you know. Saint Lucia has the highest number of Nobel laureate Nobel prize winners logo laureates put Kapisa in the world. So that means that means we have the most Nobel laureates based in the world based on the amount of people that we have Alpine. Yes so we have to both of them. From Castro's so there is a museum. That's actually celebrating the when he was a poet of Pinton a playwright and it was the regional his original house before on the town started getting these excellent stuff so they remitted in the same French style. And you can see all of these paintings in his poems on his act. Talking about Caribbean Caribbean.

"Today's episode is brought to you by the new film from Twentieth Century Fox Ad Astra Brad Pitt Stars Roy McBride an astronaut on a mission to find his his missing father traveling to the outer edges of the solar system he unravels a mystery that threatens the survival of our planet and uncover secrets that challenge the nature of human human existence in our place in the cosmos Ad Astra in Theaters September twentieth. The fate of humanity depends on one man either. What's at bonders well before we we get started. This is the very first episode of the League and since you and I are the hosts. I thought maybe we should just quickly explain what the show is so. The lead is the show. I always wish existed. I'm a sports writer but I was a sports fan. I and it's really all about great stories great stories from great sports reporters who are all over the country. I mean these are journalists who live in these cities and no these teams and new these players where you don't have to to be a fan of those teams or those players to care about these stories for example in this first episode you talk to Larry Holder who has covered the New Orleans saints for Almost fifteen in years about why that terrible call last season provoked such an unprecedented response yeah and it really helped me to understand why why saints fans did what they did and why fans at yesterday's game were so demoralized. It's really something anyone can identify with so. Should we get to the story. Let's go for it so Larry. Let's start with a very basic question. How important is football is the game of football to the city of New Orleans. I'll just put it to you this way win. Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans August two thousand and five and of course everyone is recovering from the storm. People are literally taking their FEMA checks to by saint season tickets gets. That's how important the saints are to this community and I'd say without the saints returning to the city at that point. I don't think the city would have ever actually actually rebounded so I would say unlike many if any NFL fan base within the League all right so let's go back to this incredible no call its last year's. NFC Championship game the saints in the Rams are tied in the fourth quarter and the saints look like they're about to score and and book a trip to the super bowl walk us through what happens next. Tommy Lee Lewis who is really kind of an unknown receiver within the saints receiving core. He's not one of their top targets. He's basically running free down the sideline breeze. NICKELL robey Coleman in absolute desperation in flies basically headfirst into Tommy Lewis as drew brees has a perfect pass incomplete. No flagged Tommy Lee Lewis to officials are looking at each other. One looks like he's about to take the flag out and throw it a second one basically says no no no and it's not pass interference or a helmet to helmet call which is also of course you legal in the NFL and the play just goes on so you're you're in the stadium when this happens in. How does the crowd react? It was utter a gas crowd's going crazy as there's no flag right on the state sideline and then of course the replay a they put it up in the on the big screens in the superdome and everyone loses their minds he all he was doing was was staring down. Lewis and just playing the made and you add it all together and it became a complete and utter debacle the rams get the ball back. The Saints Defense is probably a little bit in Shell Shock. The rams drive down the field. They kick a field goal. Send it to overtime overtime the saints. Get the ball first in overtime drew brees hit throws interception which means when the rams get the ball back. All they've got to do is kick a field goal. We'll check is god Ram's on the Super Bowl fifty three they go it was the first time probably in my professional career where I entered a locker room and I was angry for the team that I was covering covering well so you know people always complain about refs decisions and calls and you know it's always very hyperbolic. The worst call in sports history was this it's actually the worst call in sports history instead of using hyperbole and saying it's the worst call I would lump maybe five calls that were historically terrible arable in the realm of sports and that one's in there it's normal to be bombed when you're a fan about your team losing especially in in such dramatic fashion then but saints fans seem to have gone way above and beyond just calling into their local talk show angrily right what what was their reaction after the game even in the in the weeks following well start off with the immediate aftermath say right after the game is over the NFL admitted they messed up head coach. Sean Payton now saying the NFL told him the rest quote blew the call the NFL admitted now they admitted it to Sean Payton. They didn't come out and say oh my Gosh Roger Goodell jusque. Ask had like a mini press conference and said this was wrong. Roger Goodell not coming out and owning it publicly. I think that kind of boiled into you. This anger and fury essays got today and it's terrible. It's terrible call terrible. They should be fired. All refs awful worst. Call ever come are you. It was a lesser woman. I would say something a little meaner them. There's all this anger and it manifests in billboards throughout the city and and boycotts thoughts and parades you know where you at any of those events I actually did a basically an odyssey of going to several events and it was is this big giant HOOPLA party and it had to do with absolutely not watching the Super Bowl ignore that the super bowl was even existing and this was on Super Football Sunday. Yes this is on Super Bowl Sunday. I in fact I started at a jazz funeral that was at the riverfront at the foot of Canal Street. Then I went to another block party that was on magazine Street of course a very famous street New Orleans police blocked it off if they had skits where people were dancing dressed as referees doing this and that anything to take away from the NFL just waiting on the Super Bowl. I think that was part of it. We'll so this is all happening on Super Bowl Sunday and it doesn't end there this actually turns into legal action. New Orleans Saints Season Ticket holders hitting the NFL with a lawsuit those ticket holders say the NFL is wrong by not acting in the commissioner should have done something but the NFL the initial lawsuit was basically claiming that the saints should should be allowed and the NFL should allow the saints in the Rams to replay the game or replay it from that point but even the saints the organization that was totally screwed by this whole thing they have even come out and said no we're with the NFL on this well in Saint have joined the NFL NFL and asking that the Louisiana Supreme Court rule against Saints Fans and the Nolan No call lawsuit. I think that's Kinda telling point. Look we understand how much you're angry about this but we've got to move on this goes a lot farther than just a few frivolous lawsuits this goes oddly all the way to the the US Senate my colleague and the House of Representative is calling for the NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to come testify in front of Congress on the travesty that occurred heard five days ago first of all who is Senator Bill Cassidy who spoke about this on the Senate floor Cassidy's in his first term as a senator her and of course he's Louisiana's certainly a republican state and maybe he wants to make a name for himself. I don't know I I wish I knew because I think colossal waste of time a colossal waste of time now every drug sitting on a stool in every bar throughout the nation looked up at that ATV and said there's an affair.
