Eric and Max McLean Discuss C.S. Lewis's Greatest Sermon

"I'm talking about one of my favorite subjects ever C. S. Lewis, the author, the Christian apologist, talking to a dear friend, max McLean. Max, you've spent much of your life bringing Lewis to life on the stage. I've seen you do a number of things. They blur together in my mind. I can't remember divorce. Okay, so screw tape, the great divorce and the most in convert, which I saw what? Three years ago, I don't know. It was it opened in New York. It ran for 15 weeks in New York in 2016. Well, not only that, but I was privileged, I think in either maybe it was 2005 to see you it might have been after that, to see you give the sermon the weight of glory. The saint Mary's church in Cambridge, that's the place where Lewis gave that sermon in the 50s, I guess, 41. 41. Really? Wow. One of his most famous sermons. And it's funny as a sermon because, you know, people have different ideas of what sermons are. This is just like a spectacular essay that's also a sermon. But you memorize the whole thing. That was pretty influential in the writing of this play. In fact, the it concludes with a good bit of a weight of goy. There are no ordinary people. We've never met a mere mortal. Yeah. I'll say. I want to convert a lot of what Louis wrote into hard boiled 30s dialog. Gee joy your swell. She probably spoke like that as a New Yorker. You've done so much of this, but to bring it to the screen because that's to me, it's always been one of the frustrations of theater, is that only so many people get to the theater, and that there is something when you can put it on the screen, of course, it's different. But you had our friend Norman stone turn it into a

"Hello. From wonder media network, I'm Jenny Kaplan, and this is romantica. This month, we're talking about troublemakers and villains. Recovering stories from across a spectrum, from women who made good trouble to women who thrived in illicit industries to villains in the truest sense of the word. Today we're talking about a prominent racketeer and entrepreneur. She spent her life crafting her own mythology. We're talking about the numbers queen of Harlem, Stephanie, saint Clair. Much of what we know about Stephanie's saint Clair's early life is murky. And that it seems is on purpose. One story is that she was born in Guadeloupe, a series of Caribbean islands. Another is that she's originally from Martinique. Some say she was born in France. In the summer of 1911, Stephanie boarded a ship bound for Canada. She was either 13 or 23. It's not clear what Stephanie did there, but the next year, in 1912. She got on another ship. This one was going to New York City. By the mid 1920s, Stephanie had become the head of a thriving numbers business in Harlem. Though, yet another mystery of her life is how she made enough money to start her gambling empire in the first place. In an era when banks often denied black Americans loans, illegal lotteries were seen as an investment opportunity. As potentially fruitful and risky as playing the stock market. Here's how it worked. Every day, the New York clearing house, which functioned as something of a Central Bank in the city, would release its numbers. People would place small bets on numbers between one and 999. Lottery organizers would then find the winning number based on two figures. The daily clearance among member banks and the Federal Reserve bank credit. The next day, the game reset new bets and a new winning number. By 1931, Stephanie was known throughout the city, famous for her fashion sense, her business savvy and her habit of taking out ads in the New York Amsterdam news. This message ran below a full page photo of Stephanie. To whom it May concern I have received letters and telephone messages for men which have annoyed me very much. And I take this occasion to ask them publicly to please not annoy me. I, mademoiselle saint Clair, I'm not looking for a husband or a sweetheart. If they do not stop annoying me, I shall publish their names and letters in the newspaper. Stephanie controlled the narrative, literally. She was also a staunch advocate for the black community. So in The Great Depression hit and white gangsters at their sites on black lottery bankers. Stephanie refused to back down. It was war. Dutch Schultz a Bronx native was a violent bootlegger with tons of connections. He was known for killing anyone who got in the way. But when Stephanie heard that he was gunning for her business, she reportedly said, I'm not afraid of Dutch Schultz or any other living man. I will kill Schultz if he sets foot in Harlem. He is a rat. The policy game is my game. Stephanie organized the other black bankers smashing any white owned businesses that took bets for schulz. She took to the newspapers, too, buying ads, urging folks in Harlem Tibet black. Schultz retaliated by kidnapping and murdering Stephanie's men. He also put a hit on her, forcing her to go into hiding. When schulz was ultimately shot by another gangster in 1935, Stephanie sent assigned telegram to his deathbed. As E so, social eure. Over the next year, Stephanie, nearing 40, began to step away from her business. She turned her attention to another goal, marriage. In 1936, Stephanie entered into a marriage by contract, with the man known as bishop amiru auman Sufi Abdul Hamid. It wasn't a legal marriage. But the contract gave them a one year trial period to decide whether to continue their relationship. Meade was a local labor organizer and religious leader ten years Stephanie's junior. He claimed he was born in the shadow of the Egyptian pyramids and often styled himself in a cape and turban. In truth, he was born Eugene Brown and lull, Massachusetts. The relationship didn't last long. In 1938, Stephanie fired three gunshots at her husband after catching him cheating. She grazed him and was sentenced to two years in prison. Stephanie's story goes from murky to opaque after that point. It was reported that despite rumors of poverty and mental illness, Stephanie spent the rest of her life advocating for black communities, albeit a bit more quietly. Stephanie saint Clair reportedly died in New York City in 1969..

Eric Describes the Funniest Story From His New Book 'Is Atheism Dead?'

"There are a lot of funny stories in the book. And usually when I do interviews, I don't get to tell these stories. I've got a glance over the top. But you just asked me about one of my favorites. I mean, I can't tell you how much joy I just laugh every time I think about it. But this was the discovery in 1979 of what's called the silver ketef scrolls. And what that means is these are incredibly tiny silver scrolls that were so tiny they were worn as amulets. And they had the priestly blessing the ironic blessing where the priests would say the lord bless you and keep you the lord make his countenance to shine upon you and give you peace. I mean, this holy thing from the scripture of written in silver in really Proto hebraic because this is from 6 50 BC. Anyway, but how was it found? Yes. I, if you read books and archeology, it'll sort of tell you, oh, this was discovered here here by so and so and so and so I was okay. But somehow, in my research, because I have fun doing the research, I discovered this weird backstory. And the more I dug the funnier it became. Yeah. Okay, here's the story. The guy whose last name, oh gosh, what is it? It's Barack. I can never say his name. It's the book here. But anyway, it's not Jacobs. No, it's a 28 year old. It's a 28 year old guy studying archeology in a Tel Aviv, or Jerusalem. So he's a nobody. He's 6 years from his PhD, but he gets this idea in his head that below Saint Andrew's church outside just right at the outset skirts of Jerusalem. There are some old caves and burial caves, whatever. They've all, they looked like they've been excavated. There's nothing there, but he has a hunch that there's more to be found there. But he doesn't have any credibility or anything to get real archeological students to help him. So he has to be really humble and say, you know, I'll take anybody who can help me. Gabriel barques Gabriel bark, I think it's barkai, barkey. He has to go and this is like a joke. So archeology club, 12 and 13 year olds. They volunteer the kids, the kids can help you. So how'd you like 12 and 13 year olds annoying 12 and 13 year olds to help you on this big dig? So they do the dig, they find nothing. He's disappointed, and he says, well, you know what? At least to we've got a photograph, all these chambers, even though we found nothing, there was one kid that was so annoying to this barkai that barkey was like ripping his hair out and he says, I can't take another minute of this annoying 12 year old named Nathan. So here's what I'm going to do. All of these caves need to be photographed. The most distant one or one of the distant ones and over cave 25, he sends Nathan there, and he's really stern with him, like angry, like, hey, I've had enough out of you. I want you to clean that chamber. It's gonna be photographed. I want it to be so clean that your mother could use it as a kitchen. Like you really threatens the kid because this kid was very annoying. So Nathan trundles off to this distant place. And the joy, of course, is that it's far away, and we're not going to hear from this kid for two or three hours while he's doing what we do. But he takes a hammer with them, which is a weird thing, nobody knows. But the kid is so annoying that to go clean the cave, he just happens to hide a hammer on his person. And when he's bored in this sacred chamber, okay? There's nothing there. It's got a stone floor, whatever. He takes the hammer out. Nobody knows this, okay? He's all alone and starts smashing the floor with the hammer. Now this alone, I find it funny. The only reason he's there is because he was so annoying, they sent him as far away as possible. But if he wasn't annoying enough, he had a hammer with him and decides to use the hammer to smash the floor. The board Nathan smashes the floor with the hammer so hard that it cracks. It wasn't supposed to crack. And he finds a hidden chamber. He sticks his hand in the hidden chamber and is dragged into the bowels of hell itself. Just kidding. He puts his hand into hidden chamber and he pulls out some stuff, some like little ceramics. He now is like, hey, this is what I'm here for. I'm not here to clean. I found treasure. So he runs to barkai and tugs on his shirt. He's like, hey hey, look what I found. You could see bark. I could picture his hair standing on end, like what is going on? The annoying kid is back with some ancient treasure. So they run back to the place, barkai sees that, what do you assumed was an empty place was in fact hiding this stuff and the annoying kid was so annoying that he smashed the floor open or whatever. So he sends the kid home and they spend days now excavating the secret whole and they pull out treasure after treasure and the greatest treasure is what we described. And unbelievably tiny silver scroll so delicate that they couldn't unwrap it for three years. They didn't know how to have the technology without destroying it. But they could read the words inscribed in silver. Now if it's inscribed on anything but silver, it doesn't last. So the Dead Sea scrolls, which are amazingly old, they're not this old. This is even older. So this is the first extant writing from the Hebrew scriptures ever discovered thanks to the annoying 12 year old Nathan. He's probably in his mid 50s right now and he doesn't know. And when he's

Could Mike Pompeo, Robert O'Brien, Make a Run for POTUS?

"Yeah, David drucker, I am going to moderate a debate of would be senators in ohioans on a night, the 6 Republicans who are running three nights at Senate to replace rob Portman, and I'm reading in Trump shattered or prepare for that debate. They might want to get a hold of a copy themselves if they want to know what I'm thinking about. I think you're going to sell like hotcakes. I can not wait to read this, but I wanted to ask you, I know that two of the profiles in the book are of Robert O'Brien and Mike Pompeo. I was with both of those men last week. I'm curious what your assessment of both of their intentions and odds are showed president Trump not enter the race. And if he should. Well, it's very interesting. Let me start with Mike Pompeo, the former Secretary of State because I spent so much time researching him and reporting on it. He wants to run for president. And in fact, in a podcast interview a couple of weeks ago and it's a companion to my book, so it's also athlete titled in Trump's shadow. I asked secretary Pompeo, if I said I know you're not going to tell me if you're running or not today, I'm not that I'm not that crazy. But I said, if Trump decides to run a third time, does that automatically mean you will not. And he would not say as some have said that that automatically means he would not. He said, look, if you're going to run for president, you need to believe that you have something unique and critical to offer the country at a time in history. He is planning to run and everything he is doing is about planning to run. Robert O'Brien, who I profile less, but did mention is a very interesting figure because he comes from the traditional wing of the party, but he fit in very well with Trump in The White House and was his most successful national security adviser from the perspective of doing the job and not getting crosswise with the commander in chief. Could be a very interesting dark horse candidate as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. He's a Mormon. He comes from the west. There are pockets of Mormon voters in Arizona and Nevada, Idaho, other states where multi candidate primary, you might be able to do some damage. He's also interested in running. I classify him as less interested in Pompeo.

"I'm sixty one years old slightly a little bit overweight. I got ten or twenty more pounds. I'd like to lose. I don't know what kind of risk that am. I high risk. If i die of covert i guess i would have been a high risk. How many people have we heard didn't have any commodities and died of covert not everybody who dies with coverted has a bunch of pre existing conditions. Right listen to what this reporter jennifer that care. Tv in minneapolis. Saint paul says at the beginning of her report treatment only works if you get covert and you're also at high risk for severe disease. Now listen the treatment only works if you're at high risk that doesn't even make any sense. That's not even logical. It only works if you have and if you're at high risk really that's what it works so if you're low risk it doesn't work you see what they're doing. And i'm not a conspiracy theorist but do you see why the media is a trusted. Think about that. It only works these these antibody treatments. If you're at high risk and if you've got kelvin well guess what asari on like the guy on the titanic knocking over the ladies and little kids to get on the lifeboat. If i get cove in. "The NASA minute. With Kevin mason as everyone tries to get back to the way life used to be pre-pandemic, I've noticed a recent trend when it comes to movie advertising. And I don't know if you've seen it because it's pretty subtle. But as they talk about some of the movies that are available both on an app or on your cable box, and available in the theater at the same time, you'll always see an ad talking about you need to see this on the big screen because the movie companies want you to go back to the movie theater. They want you to watch it in the big screen because more people make money that way. I really noticed it over the weekend as my wife and I watched the many saints of Newark on our HBO Max app. Now of course we could have gone to the theater, but in all honesty, neither of us are still ready to go back to the theater, because I don't necessarily trust all the folks around me in Tennessee to wear a mask and do the right thing. So while I could have seen it on the big screen, it may have been cooler. I enjoyed it just as well in my 70 inch television set. And I know it's not quite the same thing as on a big screen movie, but it's kind of funny how we're trying to get people to go back to the theater when many of us aren't quite ready yet. I feel bad for the movie studios, but not that bad.

What Is 'The Rule of Law' in America?

"The rule of law by definition which is the written constitution that we have the written constitutional republic means that you are being governed by things that do not change. It is in writing. It's a reference point. People know what to expect. People know that if you burn down a building you go to jail unless you're protesting for saint george floyd during florida florida palooza. You assault a police officer. You go to jail unless you're doing that. During the palooza you see the idea of the rule of law. Is that if you do something you're going to have to pay for this creates incentives and this creates penalties. This creates consequences for action. The entire constitutional system that we live under is a series of agreed upon laws measures and principles that. Make sure you as the citizen which means co-ruler in greek co ruler of this country. Know what to expect that you're not going to be living in a sea of uncertainty chaos or confusion. It's supposed to be built on universal truths

What Can We Learn From Machiavelli?

"Can you talk about how machiavelli in some way liberated this conversation. Not in a good way of the will of kind of how the political will should triumph good. Yeah that's excellent. Actually you're referring to chapter fifteen in prince and it's one of those chapters that are so crucial that anytime i ever teach machiavelli. Distracter has to get almost a full day of line by long line. Reading will in chapter fifteen of the prince machiavelli says he's going to depart from all classical writers. So forget the debate. Whether or not machiavellian was Doing something new was just sort of an ancient and modern clothing. He tells us that he's doing something new. What is it that he's doing new. Just so happens. Charlie that i have that chapter in mind. Let me just read it to you. He says because. I know that many have written about this politics friendship etc. I fear that in writing of it again. I may be helped presumptuous. Especially since in disputing this matter i depart from the orders of others so he tells us he is not gonna follow anything that had been written about before regarding moral philosophy and politics and then he says the following since my intent is to write something useful it suggesting that classical fodders not useful to whoever understands it appeared to me more fitting to go directly to the effectual truth of the thing than to any imagination of it so he makes a distinction between philosophy. That is simply imaginary and philosophy. That is actually factually true. Which is a unique phrase. No one's ever used that. Before now that in a moment but what is he talking about. He says that many have imagined republics he's referring to plato and principalities and kingdoms say saint augustine kingdom of god to have never been seen are known to exist in truth why because they are so far from how one lives to how one should live that he who lets go of what is done for what should be done learns his room and rather than his preservation so now he tells you what philosophy really should be. The factual truth is that which preserves your life and preserves your republic and imaginary truth moral or political. Is that which leads to your ruin.

"Always two ships sailing around the island in opposite directions and no ship could leave the island until there was a confirmation that napoleon was at home to pull died there in eighteen twenty one and was buried there until his body was moved to paris in eighteen forty in eighteen. Thirty five the island left control of the british east india company and became a crown colony which was administered by an appointed governor. From this point the island slowly started to decline steamships became popular in the nineteenth century. And they didn't need to stop the big thing however which truly rendered the island. Relevant to the strategic plans of britain was the opening of the suez canal in eighteen. Sixty nine with the canal ships. No longer needed to go around africa to get to asia. And saint helena. Lost its importance. It was briefly used as a pow camp during the boer war which on the population reached. Its all time high of over nine thousand people in one thousand nine one after the war however the population dropped again only thirty five hundred people in one thousand nine eleven one of the things that made living on the island economically viable was the introduction of flax flax is used for things like rope or twine. Which can use coarse fibers in one of the biggest cases of unintended economic consequence in history in nineteen sixty five. The british post office made what seemed to be a very minor decision to switch from flax twine to synthetic twine for bundling. It's letters that decision devastated the saint lena economy which was heavily dependent on flax all of the flax mills on the island closed that same year in nineteen one. The british nationality act took away the rights of everyone on the island to live and work in the uk. They could now only get jobs. Legally and the island of ascension which had a military base or the falkland islands. This was eventually thankfully reversed in two thousand two for decades. The only ship which visited the island. Outside of an occasional repositioning cruise ship was the royal mail ship. Saint helena which would travel from cape town to saint alena to ascension and back. The ship was the only way on her off the island and the only way to get supplies. Getting to saint. Helena required a five day voyage from capetown and a five day trip back. I know this. Because i did it back in two thousand fourteen as we pulled away from cape town. I realized i didn't have anything on my kindle. So i ran up to the top deck a three g signal and i downloaded all of the game of thrones books to pass the time on the voyage. The biggest change to the island in the last few decades has been the construction of the airport since the island was discovered in fifty two. No ship had ever actually docked at saint helena because there was no dock and no plane had ever landed either one..

"Hello everybody. Welcome back to the catholic culture podcast. I hope you'll forgive my some more casual. Look it's only marginally more casual because usually it is pretty much what. I'm wearing plus a corduroy jacket. But we're going through a pretty intense heat wave of new york city right now and i don't feel like wearing a quarter or a jacket at this moment especially since i have to turn off my air conditioning In order to record these things. I'm really excited for today's episode My my guest today has been on the show before We spoke about his publishing house. Wise blood books today. We'll be seeking about his new book from tan. How to read and write like a catholic. His name is joshua ran. In addition to being the editor of wide blood books. He is the founder with our frequent guest. Dame's matthew wilson avenue. Mfa program In poetry and fiction at the university of saint thomas in houston which will no doubt touch upon later in the conversation joshua. Thank you for coming on the show. Thank you so much for having me as a pure pure joy and forgive me for getting dressed up in wearing a tie internal to your shame so yes well as you did as you should have no apology. Necessary for that okay. So i loved your book. it's kind of. It does a number of different things. So maybe you can just start with a basic overview of all the parts. Since i think we'll be focusing on a couple of parts in particular. It'd be nice to just get people an overview of everything. That's in the book. I sure. yeah so so. Most basically the book traces and understanding of catholic literature and an approach to catholic literature that span from saint john. Henry newman calls our record of man in rebellion all the way to the other end of the continuum which is a representation of the vision. So for example newman focuses heavily on especially the literature of what he calls natural man. So let's say something like homers and how this may leak focuses on man's departure from god or rebellion But then on the other end of the continuum have someone dante who in the upper echelon of patio takes us as close as we possibly can get to the vision which he images around this beautiful mystical rose and you have the souls of the saved buzzing around like these and he gets again to sort of the threshold of participating in that vision as far as literature and kind of go and so the book is sort of devoted to tracing that continuum and everything that exists between those two extremes than division of the sections is is along along these lines basically just sort of what as catholic literature a catholic approach to literature then a section devoted to literature as a study of human nature right so Again newman argues that that is one of the greatest gifts that lurch gives is.

"To establish our importance. Let's submit our opinions under the blood of jesus. Christ let's submit ourselves to what the scriptures actually say and not defame or slander or scoff at or scorn. A person who doesn't agree with us about that position in prophecy but rather let us ensure that we are saints of that we've been forgiven for her sin and that we will be able to be with christ in the heavenly realm when the judgment is made on behalf of the saints david. Pasta is probably one of the greatest teachers of our century. I listened to a message. He gave last night on youtube. He's now past the late david paulsen. He was an old man in this video. You could see. He was very feeble but he came alive as he was asked about. Heaven became alive and he began to talk about the glory the glory of being with jesus and he said i want to live until jesus comes but if i don't i'm going to get a front row seat because those of us who pass will be raised first and then those who remain will be caught up with the lord. I wanna be with. Jesus i want to be with. Jesus do you lord. I just come today. And i plead your blood over every person listening and i asked at this proud divisive spirit would be broken in us that we would stop trying to be right and instead be righteous and humble before you for jesus you said that only god is good you jesus are good because you are god lord i desire with all my heart to dwell forever in you to be blessed by your presence lord give to us the grace of repentance for our pride in the name of jesus i pray.

"It says he will wear down the saints of the highest one and he will intend to make all the rations in times and in law and they will be given into his hand for a time times and half a time. Three and a half years the saints of god are going to be in deep persecution but the court will sit for judgment and his dominion will be taken away annihilated and destroyed forever and the sovereignty of the dominion the greatest of all the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be given to the people of the saints of the highest one. His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom and all the dominions will serve and obey him. Look up revelation the twentieth chapter. It's called the thousand year millennium. When christ with his saints will rule over all of the kingdoms of the earth but not over the kingdom of the anti christ it will be destroyed. The beast will be destroyed at this point. The revelation ended in s for me. Daniel my thoughts were greatly alarming. Me and my face grew pale. But i kept the matter to myself. What i want you to see is that daniel did not teach us did not share the seventh chapter to feel good about himself or to establish how smart he was or to be in controversy with god's people it appears here there will not be a secret rapture that the saints of are going to endure a very painful time of persecution intense suffering and persecution so much so that they will say in christ is making war against us. He's wearing us out. He's taking us. He's overcoming us. He's overpowering us and they're paying with their lives now. What i want to say to you this you need to be prepared to be raptured in a secret rapture if there is such a not saying there's not i don't know i know i've heard all the arguments.

"Who would teach us what we needed to know in that we could have a pure heart not so that we could be superior to a brother or to assist her and put them down because they believe in a secret rapture or they don't believe in a secret rapture or because they believe that revelation is all been fulfilled already. They believe whatever they believe. It's about jesus it's not about your intellectual fight burs eighteen. But the saints of the highest one will receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever for all ages to come then i desired to know the exact meaning of the fourth beast which was different from all of the others exceedingly dreadful with its teeth of iron in its claws of bronze which devoured and crushed and trampled down the remainder with its feet the meaning of the ten horns that were on its head and the other horn which came before which three of them fell namely that worn which had eyes and a mouth uttering great boasts which was larger and appearance than its associates. I kept looking. And that horn was waging war with the saints and overpowering them. Look this is the end of time. There has not been a secret rapture. These not left behind saints. The left behind are not saints. Their sinners these are saints. These are righteous men and women who walk with jesus and the scripture says i kept looking and daniel says that horn was waging war with the saints and overpowering them until the ancient of days came and judgment was passed in favor of the saints of the highest one and the time arrived when the saints took possession of the kingdom. If i'm understanding this correctly and i may not be but it appears that the saints are being persecuted and god finally comes. Jesus comes and makes a judgement in favor of the saints now. It doesn't end there..

"Some people. Ask me pastor. Do you understand the books of daniel and revelation. And i say to them some but most i don't understand but i understand one most important fact. And that is that the saints of god will receive the kingdom in the end and will be the bride of jesus christ and will live for eternity that satan and his angels and his demons and all of those who compromise with satan who walk in sin will be unfit to enter into the new jerusalem and will be cast into a lake of fire and will be destroyed for eternity. I know how it all ends up. Read the end of the book. Jesus wins but even beyond that judgement is made for the saints of god. I sometimes ask christians. Are you a saint. Almost all of them will answer. Oh no. I'm still a sinner. If you are still center if you do not have a pure heart before and we come to this moment you will be cast out. That breaks my heart for do this broadcast in fact. I have a a yellow sticky on my on my computer on the monetary assess. I'm on this broadcast for only one purpose to secure the salvation of your soul. I care about you. And i care about your soul and i want you to be made clean by the blood of jesus for judgment is only going to be made in favor of those who are saints of god judgment will be against sinners and four saints..

"I kept looking until the beast was slain and its body was destroyed and given to the burning fire as for the rest of the beasts their dominion was taken away but an extension of life was granted to them for an appointed period of time. Now there's a transition part of what you'll notice in these prophecies is that they do not follow consecutively historically step by step but they go back and pick up pieces in the book of revelation. That's very apparent it's a series of plays and it will leave one scene and go pick up another scene to catch it up. That's what's happening here. verse thirteen. I kept looking in the night visions and behold with the clouds of heaven. One like a son of men was coming and he came up to the ancient of days and was presented before him and to him was given dominion glory and a kingdom that all the peoples nations and men of every language might serve him. His dominion isn't everlasting dominion which will not pass away and his kingdom is one which will not be destroyed your member after the resurrection of jesus she clung to jesus and he said to cling to me. "Now. I listen to men that. I have great love and compassion for my heart men of god and they're saying to me look for the great catching away before the tribulation. It's a rapture. We are going before the anti christ begins to persecute and murder. The people of god. Maybe maybe not. I don't base what. I believe on speculative arguments from scripture. I go by what the scripture says. i'm literally just except in those places where it's absolutely revealed that it is not literal but symbolic. But i choose to believe as literally as possible what i read in the word of god and i'd be very straight with you. I don't know a lot. I grew up listening to my father. Do bible studies with people on all the prophecies of daniel and revelation zachariah and other prophecies. And then i went off to college. There studied theology and again they all went through one whole class just on the book of daniel and revelation and then i went to grad school and again and then when i graduated i listened to pastors talk about these things. One thing became very clear to me. There are schools of thought who each proclaim the loudest of terms that they are right. I'm sorry i can't buy in with any of the schools of thought. I read the word and i endeavor to go by what that were says because it is the revelation of jesus christ and so everything else in scripture for me has to fit into the framework of jesus and so i take very literally matthew..

It's about all of us and that is why we need each other and and there might be another question that this days by non-catholics bad events is this. What does the history of this doctrine and how historicism we can only give them a particular historic documents that boosted that the entire early church they did in fact believe in the communion of saints. And actually it's not the entire church. Even before jesus was born into this world. the israelites did in fact. Believe in the communion of saints and we have gotten stupid that so i would like to take you to the book of job it obits chapter twelve was twelve when you answered up bridge to the lord i. That's the jewelry was the one who brought you press into his glorious pleasant. I did the same thing each time. You betty the dead so The angel refill is talking to it. And he's saying. I presented your brass in front of the lord. So why this particular worse is important as a non-catholic brothers and sisters might say that this particular was is not from the bible. They do not accept the honesty. Of the book of job it so obviously. That is a topic for another day. But what we're trying to prove over here is that even if this was not inspired you can still believe in the historic city of this particular was and you cannot deny that the israelites also believed in the communion of things. That is the worst that this weady strong. Riches from the second book of maccabi s- was dwell. He told them that he had seen a vision of nice. The former high priest that great and wonderful man of humble and gentle disposition who was an outstanding or auditor and who had been taught from childhood outlive awards. Life without stitch thumbs nias with rain for the entire jewish nation. The last guys with outstretched arms nice spring for the entire jewish nation. So historically we have proven that the israelites believed in the doctrine of the communion of saints. So worth that on non-catholics brothers stills might bring up at this point is there is no mediator between god and man. This is one particular was that is always brought up to disapprove. The communion of saints will tell you something even though this is the worst act stated against the community of things. This is actually a worse that i can. I will use to prove the doctrine of the communion of saints. So how do we go about this. Listen very carefully. So this particular worse is first timothy. Chapter do was fight correct. So we'll just open the bible and look at a few verses that precede this particular was and i just one evening to in dial or graph not just this one particular worse. I urged then first of all that petitions prayers intercessions and thanksgiving be made for all people for kings and those in authority that we may live peaceful and quiet live in all godliness and holiness. This is good and pleases god. Our savior will want all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. But there is one god and one data between god and mankind the man jesus christ so let's look carefully at this worth and if we are to take this particular worse literally will disapprove the divinity of jesus christ because this was clearly sees the man jesus christ that is one god and one mediator between god and mankind the man jesus christ and that this particular worst is by the way attacked by jehovah's witnesses to do exactly that the wind was.

"Stained glass people sometimes that's what people think of when they think of saints. These are the people who are in stained glass or a statue is made of them or dead. There's a prayer card. But do we think that we could be Saints? That's what all of us are called to. There is a universal call to holiness. But when we think of Holiness and we think of saints. We think well, maybe that's not attainable for me. Of course on our own it's not it's done with the grace of God. And it's done in the everyday Acts. Of goodness and compassion and kindness and love that we show to others. Particularly the beatitude people the people that most people would think are not successful. on this side of life and yet they're the ones the beatitude people. Who the people and stained glass? usually served the poor the struggling the suffering the meek the peacemakers. These were they were often also beatitude people themselves. Maybe they were persecuted. Maybe they were insulted for the sake of Christ. But we too. A call to sanctity we too are called to more. Even if their sins that we commit the Lord offers us forgiveness. and the scenes of understood that the solemnity of All Saints is really not about the stained-glass people. It's about the people some of whom we maybe have known in life. Who are now with God in heaven? Everyone who is with God in heaven? is a saint they could have been our next door neighbor a relative. a friend they lived ordinary lives. But they lived them in faithfulness. to Christ everyday holiness Is about living our everyday? love compassion kindness gentleness meekness and a willingness to be for God and for the other. and not be focusing simply on ourselves our own power our own desires our own way because that way will not lead us. to Greater holiness and lead us to Greater selfishness cell focus and often just pain and difficulty and a struggle that we may wonder. Why are we struggling so much even if we might be successful in the world them maybe that emptiness that's within an emptiness that can't be filled by the things of this world, but can be filled by doing for God and for others by being off living what Christ calls us to be to be for the beatitude people to be not simply caught up in our own desire in our own ways and in our own selfishness but to move outward and when we move outward, we are living more for Christ and when we do this Thursday, We are headed in the direction of a Heavenly Home. Even if there may be a time even after our death or or we need to be purified. We're not going to be probably perfect on this side of life. Perfection is not the point faithfulness says faithfulness to Christ and to what he has called us to be. Because we are all called to be Saints to live for Christ. We may not end up as stained glass people. a statue may not be erected of us or prayer card made of us, but we can live lives for Christ and when we do We will truly experience what it means to be at. "The Franklin gave him because he was all. Drug, man you. Got Just leaving the street you're being. You're being a victim. There's some some lines you have to cross. I'm just saying okay. Well. I'm not pinning one parent against another saying that we can't neglect how Franklin is feeling. In lieu of whatever alternates suffered, maybe if the series was from the point of view, I would sympathize with him more. However, this is about Franklin. Saint and he fucked up. Fair enough, but we see him. It's not fair. It's not fair for a parent to festival. Fuck you up in emotional physical, whatever way and second of all it's not fair for that same parents to decide when they want to come back into your life and decide, that's what I want to be and also actually as a further extension and the third point, it's not fair to just completely pretend like all of the pain, and all the hurt four those years for those formative years. Franklin didn't exist. He wasn't even allowed to acknowledge the pain. It's Your Dad's here. He's trying he's a saint. If you'll pardon the pun, let's just go with I. Really didn't see. More of okay. This is a bloke struggling, and then he understands the path. Franklin is better than anyone. But what kind of kid that gets neglected is going to think Oh yeah, my dad was a hard time. They just feel the scars of the remnants of a father that wasn't they. Of, course, the scar tissue and Red Hot Chili peppers reference. Dot Com be helped, but what he does is provide Franck clean advice when he sees him crossing the Llano seeing him. That pissed me off. Like where do you get off? Even trying to give me some sort of fatherly advice, folk off dealing with government and he was in. Was He blockbuster? New although she knew what the government would do. You keep a secret yet, but in new they'll count for Franklin you. Could do it's the least you can do whatever you want a fucking. Pat On the back piss.
