"So okay, South Carolina, Democrats have moved their primary up. To February 3rd, that means as of today, we are looking at the New Hampshire primary being the Tuesday, January the 23rd, all right? It's going to be called a New Hampshire. I'll be up there in the north country. I'm going to miss it. Got studio north established last year. So I can cover this year completely every day, driving down New Hampshire if I have to. Try to pass the liquor store outlets. Doctor governor said you knew about that last week because somebody's got to tell you about these rules. Somebody's got to tell you about these candidates. And somebody's got to follow what they do over the weekend, the former president was on the war room with his former aide Steve Bannon cut number one, taken out after governor desantis again. Donald Trump was Steve Bannon. Total assault. Because we're winning in the polls. If I wasn't the most there was 62 16. Well, the sanctus is failing Bentley. Rhonda saint ammonias. I mean, he was so far down. He was gone. And then they shouted to him a couple of years later. Where do you run against the president? I have no comment. No comment means the answer is yes, right? But today I'm very interesting thing happened. He said he's going to form a committee. He's going to form moratorium. Exploratory committee to determine, well, that's the except because he was never looking at committees. Now he's looking at committees. It's amazing what being 40 down does. Michael Wilkerson: The Russia Narrative Is Being Controlled in the US

"Right before the break, you talked about the publicly accepted narrative what we're being told being fed in the U.S. and it goes something like this that Putin is the devil that Russia is revanchist, meaning it wants to take back all the territory and Soviet Union. That Russian soldiers are Barbarians and monsters that are committing rapes and doing all sorts of terrible things. On the other hand, that Ukraine is a beautiful country. It is, but that zelensky is a saints in contrast to Putin is the devil, that its soldiers are valued and heroic. They are. But you're not hearing the other side of the story. You're not hearing, for example. Now, listen, some of this might be true. I think the Russians are committing atrocities. We have a friend Chad robicheaux, who has spoken to me privately about that. I mean, so this is definitely complicated, but keep going. And I'm not saying that any of this isn't there are truths in all of this. My point is, what are you allowed to hear? And in America, what is interesting is what we are not allowed to hear is anything from the other side. That's the point. That's the main point. Right. War is a horrible thing and atrocities are being committed on both sides likely. And heroism and kindness has been committed both sides. On the other hand, interesting Eric, you know, I'm a man of a certain age. I've been trying to learn French. As part of the way I learned French, I've been listening to a lot of French media coming from. It turns out France. In France, in their media, even their mainstream media, they are hearing the public is hearing both sides. They're hearing leaders from Ukraine, but they're also hearing leaders and spokes people from the Kremlin from the Russian government. We're not getting that. Even in France, at least they're allowed to hear the other side. They may not agree. This isn't a fawning conversation. These are very confrontational. But the public is getting an opportunity to hear both sides and make their own decision. The narrative is being controlled here in the U.S., we're not hearing the true progress of the war. Well,

"Guys, I'm really happy to welcome to the podcast a new guest. His name is Peter, saint Ange ONG is an economist at the heritage foundation, former MBA professor in Taiwan. I actually encountered Peter with videos that he makes regularly about economics and freedom. Peter, welcome to the podcast. Wow, we're living in strange times. It looks to me that there's a lot of economic chaos in the United States, perhaps America even losing its position economically in the world, and yet on the other hand, you have President Biden. I'm running again because I've been doing an amazing job. In fact, I need to finish the job that I started. So I thought I'd begin by asking you to make sense of this kind of disconnect. First of all, what is Biden referring to in terms of his economic accomplishments and then can you, can you set that against the larger stage of what's happening in the country and more broadly? Yeah, thanks for having me on dinesh and God help us all if Biden finishes the job given what he's managed so far. His president and C so far has been largely paying back the activists who brought him to the dance. So he's delivered a lot of crony handouts for green energy and things like this. Sort of click bait for the activists. And the rest of his alleged victories have been the economy sort of springing back from the insane lockdowns that had been imposed during COVID. And so, you know, when Biden goes on about the job growth or the income growth or the rest of the alleged accomplishments, these were all freebies that were just sitting there, you know, policy had been sort of holding crushing the economy down. And of course, when you let the people actually go work and open their businesses again, then lo and behold, jobs are created.

From Boston to San Diego, was formed by an educational system that exposed them to the same ideas and gave them remarkably uniform guidance as well as tastes and habits. These amount to a social canon of judgments about good and evil, complete with a secular sacred history sins. Well, I went to university of Saint Thomas and I was studying business with focus on law and I saw the most beautiful girl I've ever seen at the time leaving a building. And I did what any red blooded Texan does. He goes to the school administration office and he drops an English class to sign up for whatever they're teaching that building. And that's true story. And in the building was the theater department. And so I fell in love with acting. And I wrote a piece of children's theater and I decided, after school, I was going to drive out to LA and I was going to try and produce that play. And then an agent could I submit you on some commercials? And I said, yeah, if it supplements my writing career, then I got a handful of those and she goes, let me submit some theatrical, which means TV and movie. I could listen to Steven a talk about Dallas. 5, 6, 7 days a week, any time bring more of that piece. Fair enough. I agree with you. Now let's go back to the mean thing. And that includes one more thing, lost in all the chaos was the LA chargers taking a shot. They're very own mean at times, which wasn't very nice. Mina, last minute, the show is yours. It's not nice. Picks one, two, and three, when exactly how you thought they would. Taylor McCaffrey Eckler. So now I'm left with a decision. Do I go with my little Cooper Cup or do I go with another star running back? Derek Henry, maybe a Dalvin cook. It seems some nausea Harris go that high. I decided to go with my little Cooper Cup at four for two reasons. Number one is, as you mentioned, it's the first mock of the season. Kind of wanted to see how my team would turn out if I went wide receiver in the first round. Number two is and this is something we're going to talk about with Cooper Cup throughout this off season, which is he had a monster year, a record breaking year, like literally a record breaking year. And so obviously we expect some regression. He can regress quite a bit and still be worth the number one wide receiver in fantasy football. If you take his ten worst games from last year, it's over 207 fantasy points, which is better than like step on Diggs ten best games from last year. That's moments the matter presented by supercuts. Rogers place in Edmonton at ten eastern. There's nothing better than these two words in sports and they are game 7 and these are on the ice. Are we got some breaking news here on NFL live and for that we go to Adam Schefter for the latest out of New Orleans. Oh, Shay wide receiver Jarvis Landry who is released earlier. This all season by the Cleveland Browns now plans to sign with the New Orleans Saints he announced the news on social media. If you go back and remember, shortly after he was cut, one of the first teams that he was in contact with was the New Orleans Saints, the saints and the chiefs out of the gate were most interested. And in the end it comes back to the New Orleans Saints who continue to work financial magic with their salary cap situation and squeeze in players like Jarvis landy like tyron Matthew and crystal lavi, their first round draft pick who signed earlier today. All right, Adam, thank you. And you mentioned there, tyron Matthew, who already hit the bird, good old Twitter, sent this out to Jarvis Landry. Let's do it like old time soldier because these two were teammates back in 2011 at LSU and here's to hoping that the saints can replicate that same kind of success those two had down in the Bayou. All right, let's go back to the NFL schedule here because week one will feature the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Dallas Cowboys. The cowboys won the NFC east last year, but the last time we saw deck and company on the field, they were basically stumbling through the last seconds of a playoff game against the niners. Tom Brady is also never lost to the cowboys in his entire career. Is that streak really gonna end in week one? We will find out. The cowboys opened the 2022 season with two consecutive home games for the first time since 2001, but they won't be easy as the Buccaneers and bangles will be coming to AT&T Stadium. The good news though for Dallas is that they have the easiest strength of schedule this season based on their opponents win percentage last year. In the previous ten years, the team entering the season with the easiest schedule has made the playoffs 7 times with four of those teams making it to the conference championship game and so Mina can the cowboys capitalize on this easy slate that they have as we look ahead. I think they can. The easy slate is in part because they are in the NFC east, they also get to play the AFC south. But I also think that this roster is capable of winning. They did take a bit of a step back this year. You got to say that to anyone who doesn't believe the cap is real in the off season and there are some question marks. I mean, right tackle. I don't know, cornerback and not so sure about that. But here's the thing, Shay. If dak Prescott returns to form and plays like he did in the first few weeks of last season, they should win the division because he is the best quarterback, but that has to happen because the rest of the roster has lost ground relative to some of the other teams. Mina, I would say you can say two things can be true. The cowboys roster might have gotten worse, but their team actually got better. I feel like they had too many miles to feed in that receiver room last year with Amari Cooper Michael Gallup and also CD lamb. So now having gotten rid of Amari Cooper, it's going to allow them to get back to what their identities should be and that should be relying on the running game and have the big play passing ability with those other receivers. Doc did play out of his mind at the beginning of last year, but he started to falter off because I felt like they had too many expectations for their wide receivers to be the ones leading the team to victory. Well, now they've got CD lamb. They've got Michael Gallup coming back off of injury. They added James Washington and Jalen tober, but there's not the same type of onus to throw those guys the football because they're not making the money that Amari Cooper was making last year. So although the cowboys roster might look like it's not as good, they still have ballers, shot callers, and a guys with a whole lot of dollars in that locker room and they can win. What are we talking about here? We're doing all this discussion about personnel and stuff. This is going to be the same old cowboys that we've seen every year almost, where they just start. They start off. People buy into them and then later on in season, they just fold up. So until the cowboys proved me wrong, that's the story I'm sticking to. I'm telling you that NFC eastman, they haven't seen back to back champions since 2003, 2004. It has been a difficult place to win. And back to back years. All right, schedule release in the NFL is basically like Super Bowl Sunday, for NFL teams and their social media departments. If you didn't see yesterday, it was a treat. Shout out to all the creativity. And in some cases, all the pettiness that was on display across the NFL last night. I've been working on a top secret mission of putting together the giant schedule and you never know who might be trying to get their hands on it. Hey. Come on. Here's what I heard. I don't want to hear you talking about the schedule. They call me the plumber. The least of my house. Oh, I love it. I haven't seen the script. What's happening? Check, check, check, check, fire the easy. Come on, I almost get your to go. I remember my nickname Matty ice because I have an undeniable passion for ice sculpting. Detroit of his old training. Right now we're gonna share with you. Intelligent options, the Detroit Lions will be using to increase win ability throughout the 2022 season. What does this all mean?.

"Best games on the entire schedule that's Sunday Night football. I think rams, 9 years, which is Monday night is also a sneaky good rivalry and we've seen in recent years that the niners have given the rams a uniquely difficult time and to finally bills ravens, those to me are two of the top contenders in the AFC can't wait to see how that plays out. Yeah, listen for me, it's week 13. You know, three divisional matchups starting with bills, pages. We saw how the bills wipe the floor with the Patriots in the wild card round. You got the Chargers raiders. We saw, you know, how, you know, how epic that matchup was last season. Saints bucks. We see just from today. You know what? Jarvis Landry coming over and then I obviously chiefs bangles, coach cowboys. That's such a loaded week 13. Well, guys, for me, it's week one. All of the anticipation and excitement from the off season and the first game they give us is the bills, rams, two of the best teams and best quarterbacks in the league. Oh my gosh, you gotta be kidding me. Then you got the Broncos and the Seahawks on Monday Night Football. They come back, you bring the cowboys and the bucks, which is electrifying last year, and then Patrick Mahomes going up against our guy, Kyler Murray in the Cardinals. I mean, just unbelievable matchups, football fans should be very happy. I mean, I know we're gonna talk a lot obviously about Russell Wilson facing his former team, but if you think about those week one matchups, we gotta talk about von Miller, going up against the rams, Darius Smith, going up against the packers. There's a lot of other people going up against their former teams. All right, we saw chefs are making cameo in the Bronco.

"The browns earlier this year. Adam Schefter, thank you so much. All right, coming up here on NFL live, the Buccaneers open up the season with a challenging four game stretch. Find out why. Some people here are not too concerned about Tom Brady and Tampa Bay. Also, the Steelers rookie mini camp kicked off today and Kenny Pickett spoke with the media about his first day on the job. Here, what Robert thinks Pittsburgh should do at the quarterback position to start out the season. NFL lives is brought to you by sneakerella, all new original movie, now streaming only on Disney+. I have conversations about the NBA's top storylines, but the league's preeminent analysts and plugged in insiders from encore analysis all star and postseason awards ballots, the latest trade owners we cover it all. We can find the hoop collective wherever you get your podcasts, but it's also now available on ESPN's YouTube channel. The NBA playoffs were all on Friday night with two more games, 6s, Celtics bucks, 7 30 eastern with wolfie trying to close out the series at home after their comeback thriller in game 5. Then grizz warriors, Steph and the warriors looking to bounce back from the blowout game 5 lost, coverage begins with NBA countdown. At 7 eastern. All right, so the NFL Draft was over two weeks ago and just to refresh your memory here. Can he pick it? Was the first and only quarterback selected in the first round, going to the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 20th overall pick. He joins Mitch trubisky and mason Rudolph in a quarterback room that will be without Ben Roethlisberger for the first time since 2003. Our steelers reporter proprietors at the sealer's facility today were picket worked out and addressed the media and Brooke, what did you see at a Kenny picket today? Well, Shay, I mean, Kenny Pickett looked calm and confident. All the things that you would expect to see out of a guy who's pretty at ease here. I mean, after all, he has been around here for the last 5 years. Yeah, different colors mean like I said, shorter walk, different colors. But still playing football and stuff, I love to do, so it feels great to be out here. You really trying to learn a lot of these guys names. I really haven't gotten a chance to meet anybody. We've been in meetings and I want to call guys out to help and stuff and talk and I have no approval on talking to you. So I think at launch I'll probably handle that next. You know, Kenny Pickett might not have known all those guys names, things that he was going to get done at lunch, but he was still commanding in the huddle in just the brief walkthrough that we saw from him about an hour and 15 minutes out here on the field. He was talking with his wide receivers, the running backs, the tight ends, just getting everyone involved. Signs of a good leader, and he told me he said, look, this weekend is all about learning the playbook the first stage of the install, because if he doesn't do that, he said he has no shot at winning that quarterback competition that we'll see develop here over the next couple of months. Okay, and of course we'll have more discussion on that here in just a minute. Brooke, thank you so much. As a reminder, Pickett wrote deshaun Watson's record for the most touchdown passes in a single season in ACC history. Again, more on that in a minute, what we're going to read and react to some of the best scheduling related notes. And of course, we're going to stay with the Pittsburgh Steelers. They open their season on the road in Cincinnati against the Super Bowl runner up and they're slated to have 5 prime time games. It's tied for the most in the NFL. In his last 15 seasons as head coach, as we know Mike Tomlin has yet to post a losing record and he'll look to keep that streak alive, possibly while playing maybe a rookie quarterback, and that's why I go to you, Robert, because when do you think we will see Kenny Pickett if we do it all? Starting a game for Pittsburgh. Well, I think the best case scenario for the Pittsburgh Steelers is for Kenny Pickett to be able to start around week four against the jets. If Mitsubishi goes out and they rock with him, he wins the job. And he starts to falter, then Kenny Pickett can come in and kind of be the hero. But if you know Mike Tomlin like all of us do, he doesn't blink and he will always play the best player. So if can you pick it out performs miss trubisky in the during the summer and in camp that you've got to give him the keys to the Bentley and let him go out there and get Kenny with it. I mean, get Kenny with it. I like that. There might even be more familiarity right now with getting big at that mister Biscay, considering he played there at Pitt in their backyard. All right, thank you RG. Next up, a huge week 12 matchup between the bucks and the rams, Sean mcvay was on the schedule release show last night and had some thoughts. Let's just say on Tom Brady's off season. I think Tom needs to just go to Fox sooner than later. But no, you know what? I got tremendous respect for the bucks. They've always been a great matchup. Great challenge. Obviously, they did a phenomenal job last year and what they've done the last couple of years. We know it's going to be an outstanding matchup and Tom leading the way makes them an incredibly tough outfit. Not just Tom Brady the rams have to worry about this season. They kick off their 2022 season against the bills and they're slated to have the NFL's toughest schedule based on their opponents win percentage last season. Only one team with the toughest strength of schedule entering the season has made the playoffs in the last 5 seasons. So keep that in mind, Mina, when you look at this ram schedule, what got your attention? Well, there's a few really tough stretches, but sticking with the bucks. I think coming out with a buy, weeks 8 through 12 or challenging. You start with the niners who have given the rams trouble because of the way they're constructed, the past, the bucks do almost knocked them out of the postseason. The Cardinals have maybe taken a step back, but we'll see if kyla Murray takes a step forward, the saints, I think, have one of the three or 5 best defenses in the NFL, and then of course finishing with the chief, so we all know are incredibly challenging for any team. The rams are looking to become just the fourth franchise since 2000 and make it to back to back super bowls and that guy I think was Tom Brady that was on that squad. Next up we check in on the colts where ESPN's new Monday night voice Troy Aikman thinks people might be sleeping on their new quarterback Maddie Ryan. I really like this football team and Matt Ryan, he's been playing at a level, I think that's going to gone unnoticed. The team hasn't been all that competitive. You know, he's had some moments where he hasn't been at his best, but I think he's a heck of a quarterback. I think he can still play at an extremely high level. They've got the running game. They've had the defense, they're well coached. I expect a lot out of this colts team. I mean, we remember how close the colts were just one season ago and that game against Jacksonville. They enter this season seeking their first AFC south title since 2014 and they'll have plenty of opportunity to get ahead in the division early in their first 7 weeks Indianapolis plays 5 of their 6 division games starting the season with back to back road games against the Texans and the Jags. And so Damian simple question here are the cults a playoff team and a loaded AFC. Yes, absolutely because my guy, my fellow BC brother, Matt Ryan is on probably the best team that he's had in his career. This is a team last year that finished both top ten and offense and defense, a team that added that's added Yannick and Galway as far as the pass rush, Stefan, former defensive player of the year, so far and good morning the defense. Obviously, strong running game with Jonathan Taylor, elite office Alonso, Matt Ryan bounded about to blow it up this year. Okay, see, now when you say that, I'm like, he's right, but I feel like we said this last year, they had such a loaded team, but then we get all the way to the last week of the season and they had nothing to show for. Robert, I see you shaking your head there. He's wrong. What do you think about what Damien just said? I got a lot of respect for my man Damien woody. Can you talk about defensively? Yes. Yes, this might be the best defense that he's had. But offensively, come on. He had Julio Jones, Tony Gonzalez. Harry, Douglas, Steven Jackson. I mean, he's had.

"So that was a really great aspect of it as well. And a nice thing that you can go the resorts. You can even go in and sit on the resort beaches. Right. Yeah. It's a very unique experience. Yeah, I wish we had that rule here. I've always enjoyed it. And so then we ended up going to cheeseburgers and Paradise, which was sort of an American themed restaurant I say. Yes, Saint Croix, part of the U.S., but it was less Caribbean food more sort of genuine American food burgers and fries, that sort of thing. But I think we were the only people in the restaurant there as well. We were there early for lunch, but those are the opportunities that are nice because the waitress will stand around and talk to a little longer. And we'll sort of see how your trip's going and give you other recommendations, which she had some really good ones for the West End. The woman that we as a server. Got it. And thanks to proxy for sponsoring this episode of amateur traveler. And then she actually recommended that we essentially cross the road from cheeseburgers, which was called shine. And we ended up spending the afternoon just laying on the beach there because we've been doing a lot of snorkeling and really been spending much time just chilling on the beach. And we know that it was some weather coming in, and when we got into the water, the visibility wasn't all that great. So we actually just ended up lounging that afternoon. And then that evening for dinner, we went to the blues backyard barbecue and grill, which was a really nice, again, sort of American style, barbecue joint with picnic tables outside and a big stage. There was a Grateful Dead cover band playing that night. So they get really, really good entertainment. Good vibes there. Yeah. Really, really, really great place for entertainment and food. Well, and we probably should say that one advantage to a place like Saint Croix in the times that we are, is that so many of your dining things are going to be outside anyway. Yeah, outside in open air. I think that's exactly Caribbean living. I'm trying to think of anywhere we ate indoors. I don't think we did. We did even have air conditioning at our Airbnb. And it wasn't uncomfortable. Even how warm it gets during the day. The nights, the breeze, just everything is very comfortable. And so our 5th day was the day that we did the tide pools. Yeah. And Chris, you're very excited about this part. We have to explain to the listeners, what's going on here. But when cat was pitching the show, I didn't say yes right away. We could sometimes there's negotiation that goes on to see whether there's enough content. And my question was just if you're not a marine biologist, was a whole day looking at typos going to be how I would spend my time and perhaps not, but where did you go? So the tide pools for parking for them. You're actually drive into the carambola resort. Okay. Which is the whole Marriott luxury resort on the island. Okay. And they got a little parking pad for you, and it's about a two and a half mile hike, which it's a fairly simple hike. There's a little up and down and it's through the rainforest, which makes it extra cool. You hike through. You come out to an opening on the beach. I really pretty pebble. And it's all little pebbles. So with each wave breaking, you hear the rocks kind of shuffling up the beach and then sliding back down the beach. Which is unique for many of the other beaches on the island. The restaurant stands. It's all white sand beach, and then this is a pebble beach. And this is an alibi bay. Yes. So in order to get over to the tide pools, you actually have to hike a little bit on the rocks, which I had no problem with, but cat ended up being too excited. And she ended up scuffing her knee. So we got there. We had a little first aid to do, but we spent several hours. Couple hours, yeah. Just hanging on the typo. It's really neat because the tide pools are essentially surrounded by rocks. And so that's what makes it. They're hierarchs. It's not like you think I know anything type close, do you think California type pool is where the tide leaves and there's these tiny little pools that are left behind, but these are really large, almost like swimming pools. That are constantly flushed by the waves that are coming in. So the water is regularly refreshed. And if the big enough wave comes in, depending on the day that you're there, they break over the rocks and essentially cause waterfalls coming into the pools. So visually, it's just a really stunning spot. There's a couple pools that are, you need to climb some rocks to access, but for the most part, they're easy to get to and safe. And that's where a lot of the people stop and that's where they're all hanging out. But you can speaking one of the local sort of keep going if you're feeling ambitious and in a sort of rock climbing mode, make your way a little further west along the coast. And there's some more private tide pools. But they are like hot tub. They're not Hot Springs, water, temperature wise, but hot tub sized pools. And watch the ocean move by. So that was really unique. And then they do have some different fish and little creatures unique from what you'll see in the coral reefs just because it's a completely different habitat. So then you make the two and a half mile hike back to your car. And we ended up walking through the resort. They were calling for rain that day. So we ended up walking through the resort and getting caught in a monsoon. And that was about the end of that for the tide pools. Well, back in the car is a little wet. Yeah. It was what we were hoping to dry off along the way, but this is what it is. We had a Jeep also, I think is valuable when we were talking about the four by four drive. But if you're planning to spend some time in the water, the jeeps are nice just because it's not a lot of fabric. Worry so much about drawing out in between adventures, if you will. You can put all your wet stuff on the ground because there's no plastic in mats. It's not fabric. So then from there, we ended up venturing west. Again, because it was a little drizzly, so we just figured we'd do some exploring in the car. And some of the roads heading last year pretty. It's almost like you're in Jurassic Park. You're almost waiting for a dinosaur to sort of poke its head out of the bus. Just because it's so thick and it's like, hey, so it was really long vines that hang down on the road. We've seen wild fruit all along the roads papaya, Campbell of mangoes, we saw the whole drive. So it's just a really similar to, I guess, we've never been to Hawaii, but what I pictured parts of hawai looking like when people explain it. So that was really neat. And that was, again, sort of off the beaten path, sort of in the heart of the islands. But at that point, we ended up continuing and making our way all the way to the West Coast and exploring fredericks did. So fredericksen is the second big city quote unquote on the island again. It's just a few blocks, essentially a restaurant stores and bars. But Frederick stet is popular because it's where the cruise ships come in. It's got a really big pier that was put in a few years ago. Specifically for the cruise ships. Yes. And so that's where they'll make their stop if you're on la Cruz line that's doing synchro to start. And so the shots there are very tourist catered, I guess you could say, there's a dive shop on that end as well. And the pier actually in the off season when you don't need to be concerned about chips, also serves as a really excellent snorkeling spot. The peers.

"I got my bags back on the road I'm heading out there and I'm ready to go looking real good in my passport photo oh no 15 amateur traveler episode 787 to the amateur traveler talks about tide pools and Columbus, beaches, and turtles, rum, and mama juana, as we go to the U.S. Virgin Islands and the island of Saint Croix. But maybe not maybe not till the day welcome the amateur traveler I'm your host Chris Kristen some let's talk about Saint Croix. I'd like to welcome to the show cat Roy and Phil shans from the staying afloat blog dot com who have come to talk to us about the island of Saint Croix. Cat and Phil welcome to the show. Hi, Chris. Thanks for having us. Thanks a lot, Chris. And what's your connection with Saint Croix? So I've always been interested in the Virgin Islands. I've traveled previously with friends to St. John island. Those actually never been. And he really enjoys the Caribbean and places to go snorkeling. Ultimately, we actually decided on Saint Croix and we were motivated as most travelers are through some of our points that we had at the time which was spirit airlines. And one of the sort of connecting flights that were available in our point range was from Myrtle Beach with our home base at the time and Saint Croix. So that was ultimately how he ended up going there. But also we were really interested in the fact that the only research on the island itself, there was a lack of it almost seemed like information on Saint Croix. Yeah, certainly St. John's and Saint Thomas and the U.S. Virgin Islands get more tourism than Saint Croix does. Exactly. I have not been there. I've been to the other two. So I'm one of those people. So that was we do like to try and find some off the beaten path destinations when we can. So that was ultimately how we ended up on saint grey. Yeah, the only thing that concerned me there is that you had a sort of connecting flight. It's sort of connecting flights on bad, but other than that. Sounds good and why should someone go to Saint Croix? So Saint Croix is definitely a outdoorsy destination. I would say. Yeah, very tropical Jurassic like destination, ecotourism is a big part of it, very diverse landscape from cactus, desert like on the east side to tropical rainforest on the west. And it's one of the Caribbean islands that you can visit from the U.S. without a passport, which I think is quite appealing to a lot of people. As you mentioned, there is a layover shortly over connecting flight to get there, but for the most part, it's a pretty quick trip as well. Excellent. Our connecting flight was at a Fort Lauderdale. But we stayed online. So it wasn't a switch off or anything specifically because it was one of the spirit airlines routes. A really neat destination, which you've seen a few by the Saint Thomas for St. John. A lot of history there sort of the structures in the buildings speak very much to sort of the 17 1800s still you can see the buildings and the condition that they were in when the European settlers started to sort of take over back in those times. So almost a bit of a trip back in time as well. Okay. What kind of itinerary are you going to recommend for us? Well, we did end up traveling down for 8 days so 7 nights. It is a small island. You can drive around it in a day. It's about 25 miles across and 8 miles wide. But with renting a vehicle and having access to the islands, there are a lot of different places to stop. And you can easily fill 8 days with. So the first thing that we arrived in Saint Croix picked up our rental car. The rental car that they recommend for Saint Croix is a four wheel drive. Which is highly recommended. Our Airbnb host every time that we asked him about information on the island. He kept going back to a four by four rental car because the roadways and just the landscape in general is more rugged than anybody in America would see a regular basis. The rows themselves range from asphalt to dirt to semi visible tire tracks to completely grasp. Okay. It's one thing to look at a map and you see the roads and you think, okay, I got a grasp on exactly what the layout of Saint Croix is, but the amount of variability in the roads is one of the more surprising aspects I think. And they also drive on the left, which is unique, but also what they do, I believe, on St. John, possibly saint tongs. I haven't driven on either those, and I am surprised. Of course, their nearest neighbor is the British Virgin Islands, but I did not remember that. But it's funny because of the you drive within the vehicle you're driving on the left as you would in the U.S.. But you're actually also driving in the left lane. So that was a really unique experience as well. Okay. Well, that's interesting because it wasn't a British possession. It was a Danish possession that the U.S. bought. So I'm a little puzzled why they drive on the left, but okay. We were looking into it. I think it was, it kind of went back and forth between the Danes and the English and the French. Ultimately ended up being the Danes that owned it. I guess sure, maybe one of the driving on the left is something to kind of stuck. Saint Corey is obviously not a Danish name. A Spanish name holy cross. So it's a head a little mixture in terms of the naming of it, but when you go to the capitol, Friedrich steady, you got a good Danish name there. Yes. Yes. Yes, and Kristen Verne is the name of the fort. Right. So definitely some Dutch influence there. Danish. And so on that first day, we asked one of the folks at the rental car agency, what they recommended, we had just gotten off. It was about lunchtime. And they absolutely swore hands down that we needed to go to Lorraine chicken shack for lunch, which is one of the roasted chicken locations that apparently everyone goes to. And if you look up online, place it to you on Saint Croix, it's one of the top rated ones. Absolutely a 100% delicious. We ended up going there more than once. And this sounds like a usual white tablecloth, fancy dining place. Absolutely. 100% smoke filling. We know that you need half of the building. It's all open air, half the building is kind of sit down, patio furniture. Yeah, like plastic chairs, plastic tables, plastic tablecloths, your plates or styrofoam blocks with a plastic cutlery. And the other half a bar and again just open aired. Aromas are incredible. Food is incredible. It's roasted, jerk, rub that they use. Again, just melt in your mouth. With some of the traditional sides, they have some traditional barbecue sides. Yeah, exactly. So that was our first stop. It really got us motivated for the trip because everything so far so good. So we actually after we had sold our stomachs after the flight, we decided to visit the captain Morgan distillery. So there's a couple distillery breweries on the island, but the two really popular ones are captain Morgan and Cruz and rum. And so captain Morgan was the one we decided to go to the first day. We actually really lucked out, I guess also with seasons specifically because we visited on the shoulder season, essentially. It was right before the end of hurricane season. So it's really quiet on the island that we ended up actually getting what.

"Always two ships sailing around the island in opposite directions and no ship could leave the island until there was a confirmation that napoleon was at home to pull died there in eighteen twenty one and was buried there until his body was moved to paris in eighteen forty in eighteen. Thirty five the island left control of the british east india company and became a crown colony which was administered by an appointed governor. From this point the island slowly started to decline steamships became popular in the nineteenth century. And they didn't need to stop the big thing however which truly rendered the island. Relevant to the strategic plans of britain was the opening of the suez canal in eighteen. Sixty nine with the canal ships. No longer needed to go around africa to get to asia. And saint helena. Lost its importance. It was briefly used as a pow camp during the boer war which on the population reached. Its all time high of over nine thousand people in one thousand nine one after the war however the population dropped again only thirty five hundred people in one thousand nine eleven one of the things that made living on the island economically viable was the introduction of flax flax is used for things like rope or twine. Which can use coarse fibers in one of the biggest cases of unintended economic consequence in history in nineteen sixty five. The british post office made what seemed to be a very minor decision to switch from flax twine to synthetic twine for bundling. It's letters that decision devastated the saint lena economy which was heavily dependent on flax all of the flax mills on the island closed that same year in nineteen one. The british nationality act took away the rights of everyone on the island to live and work in the uk. They could now only get jobs. Legally and the island of ascension which had a military base or the falkland islands. This was eventually thankfully reversed in two thousand two for decades. The only ship which visited the island. Outside of an occasional repositioning cruise ship was the royal mail ship. Saint helena which would travel from cape town to saint alena to ascension and back. The ship was the only way on her off the island and the only way to get supplies. Getting to saint. Helena required a five day voyage from capetown and a five day trip back. I know this. Because i did it back in two thousand fourteen as we pulled away from cape town. I realized i didn't have anything on my kindle. So i ran up to the top deck a three g signal and i downloaded all of the game of thrones books to pass the time on the voyage. The biggest change to the island in the last few decades has been the construction of the airport since the island was discovered in fifty two. No ship had ever actually docked at saint helena because there was no dock and no plane had ever landed either one..

Police say they did a room by room search and did not find a gun. We spoke with one student who explains her class thought it was a drill. It was mostly when, um, we've asked our teacher we were like, Is this like Did you know about this? And then he was like No. And then that's when it started to sink in. I was like, Oh, like Oh, if he doesn't know about that, then that's then This is real. It's completely real. According to the school superintendents. Two students were taken in for questioning. "Hello everybody. Welcome back to the catholic culture podcast. I hope you'll forgive my some more casual. Look it's only marginally more casual because usually it is pretty much what. I'm wearing plus a corduroy jacket. But we're going through a pretty intense heat wave of new york city right now and i don't feel like wearing a quarter or a jacket at this moment especially since i have to turn off my air conditioning In order to record these things. I'm really excited for today's episode My my guest today has been on the show before We spoke about his publishing house. Wise blood books today. We'll be seeking about his new book from tan. How to read and write like a catholic. His name is joshua ran. In addition to being the editor of wide blood books. He is the founder with our frequent guest. Dame's matthew wilson avenue. Mfa program In poetry and fiction at the university of saint thomas in houston which will no doubt touch upon later in the conversation joshua. Thank you for coming on the show. Thank you so much for having me as a pure pure joy and forgive me for getting dressed up in wearing a tie internal to your shame so yes well as you did as you should have no apology. Necessary for that okay. So i loved your book. it's kind of. It does a number of different things. So maybe you can just start with a basic overview of all the parts. Since i think we'll be focusing on a couple of parts in particular. It'd be nice to just get people an overview of everything. That's in the book. I sure. yeah so so. Most basically the book traces and understanding of catholic literature and an approach to catholic literature that span from saint john. Henry newman calls our record of man in rebellion all the way to the other end of the continuum which is a representation of the vision. So for example newman focuses heavily on especially the literature of what he calls natural man. So let's say something like homers and how this may leak focuses on man's departure from god or rebellion But then on the other end of the continuum have someone dante who in the upper echelon of patio takes us as close as we possibly can get to the vision which he images around this beautiful mystical rose and you have the souls of the saved buzzing around like these and he gets again to sort of the threshold of participating in that vision as far as literature and kind of go and so the book is sort of devoted to tracing that continuum and everything that exists between those two extremes than division of the sections is is along along these lines basically just sort of what as catholic literature a catholic approach to literature then a section devoted to literature as a study of human nature right so Again newman argues that that is one of the greatest gifts that lurch gives is.

"To establish our importance. Let's submit our opinions under the blood of jesus. Christ let's submit ourselves to what the scriptures actually say and not defame or slander or scoff at or scorn. A person who doesn't agree with us about that position in prophecy but rather let us ensure that we are saints of that we've been forgiven for her sin and that we will be able to be with christ in the heavenly realm when the judgment is made on behalf of the saints david. Pasta is probably one of the greatest teachers of our century. I listened to a message. He gave last night on youtube. He's now past the late david paulsen. He was an old man in this video. You could see. He was very feeble but he came alive as he was asked about. Heaven became alive and he began to talk about the glory the glory of being with jesus and he said i want to live until jesus comes but if i don't i'm going to get a front row seat because those of us who pass will be raised first and then those who remain will be caught up with the lord. I wanna be with. Jesus i want to be with. Jesus do you lord. I just come today. And i plead your blood over every person listening and i asked at this proud divisive spirit would be broken in us that we would stop trying to be right and instead be righteous and humble before you for jesus you said that only god is good you jesus are good because you are god lord i desire with all my heart to dwell forever in you to be blessed by your presence lord give to us the grace of repentance for our pride in the name of jesus i pray.

"It says he will wear down the saints of the highest one and he will intend to make all the rations in times and in law and they will be given into his hand for a time times and half a time. Three and a half years the saints of god are going to be in deep persecution but the court will sit for judgment and his dominion will be taken away annihilated and destroyed forever and the sovereignty of the dominion the greatest of all the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be given to the people of the saints of the highest one. His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom and all the dominions will serve and obey him. Look up revelation the twentieth chapter. It's called the thousand year millennium. When christ with his saints will rule over all of the kingdoms of the earth but not over the kingdom of the anti christ it will be destroyed. The beast will be destroyed at this point. The revelation ended in s for me. Daniel my thoughts were greatly alarming. Me and my face grew pale. But i kept the matter to myself. What i want you to see is that daniel did not teach us did not share the seventh chapter to feel good about himself or to establish how smart he was or to be in controversy with god's people it appears here there will not be a secret rapture that the saints of are going to endure a very painful time of persecution intense suffering and persecution so much so that they will say in christ is making war against us. He's wearing us out. He's taking us. He's overcoming us. He's overpowering us and they're paying with their lives now. What i want to say to you this you need to be prepared to be raptured in a secret rapture if there is such a not saying there's not i don't know i know i've heard all the arguments.

"Who would teach us what we needed to know in that we could have a pure heart not so that we could be superior to a brother or to assist her and put them down because they believe in a secret rapture or they don't believe in a secret rapture or because they believe that revelation is all been fulfilled already. They believe whatever they believe. It's about jesus it's not about your intellectual fight burs eighteen. But the saints of the highest one will receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever for all ages to come then i desired to know the exact meaning of the fourth beast which was different from all of the others exceedingly dreadful with its teeth of iron in its claws of bronze which devoured and crushed and trampled down the remainder with its feet the meaning of the ten horns that were on its head and the other horn which came before which three of them fell namely that worn which had eyes and a mouth uttering great boasts which was larger and appearance than its associates. I kept looking. And that horn was waging war with the saints and overpowering them. Look this is the end of time. There has not been a secret rapture. These not left behind saints. The left behind are not saints. Their sinners these are saints. These are righteous men and women who walk with jesus and the scripture says i kept looking and daniel says that horn was waging war with the saints and overpowering them until the ancient of days came and judgment was passed in favor of the saints of the highest one and the time arrived when the saints took possession of the kingdom. If i'm understanding this correctly and i may not be but it appears that the saints are being persecuted and god finally comes. Jesus comes and makes a judgement in favor of the saints now. It doesn't end there..

"Some people. Ask me pastor. Do you understand the books of daniel and revelation. And i say to them some but most i don't understand but i understand one most important fact. And that is that the saints of god will receive the kingdom in the end and will be the bride of jesus christ and will live for eternity that satan and his angels and his demons and all of those who compromise with satan who walk in sin will be unfit to enter into the new jerusalem and will be cast into a lake of fire and will be destroyed for eternity. I know how it all ends up. Read the end of the book. Jesus wins but even beyond that judgement is made for the saints of god. I sometimes ask christians. Are you a saint. Almost all of them will answer. Oh no. I'm still a sinner. If you are still center if you do not have a pure heart before and we come to this moment you will be cast out. That breaks my heart for do this broadcast in fact. I have a a yellow sticky on my on my computer on the monetary assess. I'm on this broadcast for only one purpose to secure the salvation of your soul. I care about you. And i care about your soul and i want you to be made clean by the blood of jesus for judgment is only going to be made in favor of those who are saints of god judgment will be against sinners and four saints..

"Now. I listen to men that. I have great love and compassion for my heart men of god and they're saying to me look for the great catching away before the tribulation. It's a rapture. We are going before the anti christ begins to persecute and murder. The people of god. Maybe maybe not. I don't base what. I believe on speculative arguments from scripture. I go by what the scripture says. i'm literally just except in those places where it's absolutely revealed that it is not literal but symbolic. But i choose to believe as literally as possible what i read in the word of god and i'd be very straight with you. I don't know a lot. I grew up listening to my father. Do bible studies with people on all the prophecies of daniel and revelation zachariah and other prophecies. And then i went off to college. There studied theology and again they all went through one whole class just on the book of daniel and revelation and then i went to grad school and again and then when i graduated i listened to pastors talk about these things. One thing became very clear to me. There are schools of thought who each proclaim the loudest of terms that they are right. I'm sorry i can't buy in with any of the schools of thought. I read the word and i endeavor to go by what that were says because it is the revelation of jesus christ and so everything else in scripture for me has to fit into the framework of jesus and so i take very literally matthew..

"Thief and saint once upon a time outside and old western town called bidder. Bend two men were plotting a robbery. They were young but they had mean looks on hard faces like someone had painted scowls on a couple of cacti. They squatted together in the black middle of a cloudy night. With not even the moon or star shining. Even the wind seemed to moan sadly as it blew across the plains. the flame. Inside their little lantern flickered and the pair of thieves pulled up their collars near enough now said chat the taller of the two snuff. That lot out were close. Sure thing said amos he killed the little flame and the pair found themselves darkness. Thick as wool socks. You find the way from here. I can't see two feet in front of me. I know the way said chet starting to move across the field and towards a distant pasture. Stay with me together. The pair made their way through the night and up to an old wooden fence up the head. They could hear the soft sounds of sheep sleeping in a flock. Each one was worth over twenty dollars more money than shut and amos had ever held all at once. Of course they could have earned that much money if they had bothered to get jobs but they preferred stealing to honest work. They slipped over the fence and found a big sheep nestled in with her little lamb. Their wool was clean and well cared for looking soft and even brushed these to chat said he wrapped his burly arms around the sheep and hefted her onto his shoulders. She let out a plaintive baugh come on quick amos grabs the little lamb in his arms he could feel its heart beating wildly in its chest for a moment. He felt bad for the little thing. Let's go before these things. Wake someone up. Chat started to step back over the fence and cam a shotgun slug plowed into the dirt by his feet. The sheep bod and ran. At the thunderous noise chat and amos dropped the sheep and lamb and started to run but another but blam an explosion at their feet drew them up short not another step. It was the rancher. He came out of his house with a shotgun leveled. One of his daughters took off running towards town. Amos assumed to get some help. Sure enough after a tense hour or so of watching the ranchers shotgun the sheriff road up with a handful of deputies and other folks from town. The deputies took over watching chet and amos and the sheriff in rancher stood on the porch to talk. The door of the house banged open. Lanny called out a little girl in a nightgown tears running down her face..

"Deadlier could hear every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the worshiping god so the question is john. How can john emea creature. Listen to all of creatures all around. The universe is it because he's omni-present and omnipotent no it does not because he's not only present auto me portend. It is because avoid almighty god who is only present and omnipotent granted him the grace to be aware of what is happening so that these are exactly very viewers. Have given you only three and i lou. The bible is filled with verses. That can prove that angels and saints in heaven can listen to what is happening or not. Just give you a few differences without a leading the amount they just look chapter fifteen ten. Matthew chapter. Twenty seven was forty-six revelation. Chapter six was nine their relationship. Nineteen was one revelation. Chapter eight was to that is another thing that we as catholics. Might want to put for workmen's on wednesdays that being a vet of everything that is happening not in may angels and saints in heaven. Omni-present denver portland so the argument that we would like to put something like this. The david does he not them. All of the people who are alive is he not able to tempt us does not no weaknesses and target exactly them to make a sin against god. The almighty god. The answer is yes. The devil knows all weaknesses. Any tempt us any tries to make us in. Against the almighty god the almighty triune god so the point is that they will being a mere creature if he is a bill to know our weaknesses and able to tempt us does that making only present and potent no of course not the devil is able to know on this because god the triune god allows him to be so if godkin allowed the devil to be aware of what is happening to make us against him will he not also allowed the angels and saints in heaven to know so that they can come to our aid and three or four us that we might not sin against him so these are the few differences and a few points that i wanted to let you all know and at this point someone might Question back why do you need someone else to pray for you so just stayed a few biblical verses from which we can prove that god in fact once all of us asked a judge to pray for one another state a few steep romans chapter fifteen taty. I urge you brothers and still by a lord. Jesus christ and by the love of the spirit to join me in my struggle. Bhai praying to god for me so saint fall is asking everybody to pray for him. The why does he need someone else to pray for him. Why county dynamically prayed to god will. Of course he can but all of us asked a judge approach. God up prayers are always more powerful together. Dial bachchan is not a one man thing. It's just not about me and about gordon. Obviously at the end of the day. It's me. And jesus but the that jesus left us a george when jesus ascended into heaven that exactly two things he left us he left us the holy spirit and he left us each other until late. That's all we got. We have got. Obviously we haven't and we have each other salvation. Not just still one man thing. It's about all of us and that is why we need each other and and there might be another question that this days by non-catholics bad events is this. What does the history of this doctrine and how historicism we can only give them a particular historic documents that boosted that the entire early church they did in fact believe in the communion of saints. And actually it's not the entire church. Even before jesus was born into this world. the israelites did in fact. Believe in the communion of saints and we have gotten stupid that so i would like to take you to the book of job it obits chapter twelve was twelve when you answered up bridge to the lord i. That's the jewelry was the one who brought you press into his glorious pleasant. I did the same thing each time. You betty the dead so The angel refill is talking to it. And he's saying. I presented your brass in front of the lord. So why this particular worse is important as a non-catholic brothers and sisters might say that this particular was is not from the bible. They do not accept the honesty. Of the book of job it so obviously. That is a topic for another day. But what we're trying to prove over here is that even if this was not inspired you can still believe in the historic city of this particular was and you cannot deny that the israelites also believed in the communion of things. That is the worst that this weady strong. Riches from the second book of maccabi s- was dwell. He told them that he had seen a vision of nice. The former high priest that great and wonderful man of humble and gentle disposition who was an outstanding or auditor and who had been taught from childhood outlive awards. Life without stitch thumbs nias with rain for the entire jewish nation. The last guys with outstretched arms nice spring for the entire jewish nation. So historically we have proven that the israelites believed in the doctrine of the communion of saints. So worth that on non-catholics brothers stills might bring up at this point is there is no mediator between god and man. This is one particular was that is always brought up to disapprove. The communion of saints will tell you something even though this is the worst act stated against the community of things. This is actually a worse that i can. I will use to prove the doctrine of the communion of saints. So how do we go about this. Listen very carefully. So this particular worse is first timothy. Chapter do was fight correct. So we'll just open the bible and look at a few verses that precede this particular was and i just one evening to in dial or graph not just this one particular worse. I urged then first of all that petitions prayers intercessions and thanksgiving be made for all people for kings and those in authority that we may live peaceful and quiet live in all godliness and holiness. This is good and pleases god. Our savior will want all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. But there is one god and one data between god and mankind the man jesus christ so let's look carefully at this worth and if we are to take this particular worse literally will disapprove the divinity of jesus christ because this was clearly sees the man jesus christ that is one god and one mediator between god and mankind the man jesus christ and that this particular worst is by the way attacked by jehovah's witnesses to do exactly that the wind was.

jesus christ jehovah nine two things Nineteen jesus earth Jesus christ twelve Twenty seven four second book jewish Matthew gordon forty-six revelation one data one god john one man
