So the old one slider and he fellows that off over two I'll be honest, but I'm more of the I would rather be so warm that I could peel layers off than have to worry about my going to be cold because I don't want sleeves on Right. Like the the the seat warmer in the car. It could be 50 to 80 degrees is probably going on. Oh, two. Not one is hit hard right at the shortstop. Bye as high throw. That's an error. It took Rizzo off the bag and buyers continues to struggle in the field. Yesterday we saw one and today Easy play, and he got rid of that real quick singing, so I don't know if it's in his head, but he got rid of it real quick and that one sailed high. Even Rizzo couldn't hold the bag. He's got such a cannon up in arms. Like everything was pretty good in terms of turning the feet. Maybe the upper body in terms of that left.

The president of the german olympic association. The two men began by observing. What maybe obvious that berlin could not host the twenty thirty six games because berlin hosted the nineteen thirty six weeks which were by then german. Chancellor adolf hitler and held in stadiums festooned with swastikas. You may remember. There was some unpleasantness back. Then so berlin is out or is it. Kurowski wrote quote so why not send a completely new strong signal of peace and reconciliation in twenty thirty six a signal that does not hide from history but takes up the responsibility that comes from it. It would be such a signal. If and israel apply together more precisely berlin and tel aviv with the sailing and surfing competitions on the eastern mediterranean but also with other sports such as beach volleyball in israel's lively metropolis as a clear signal of how responsibility arises from

"Have you guys only living on and soup and pasta. The what you need to do is just bring like six times as much candy as on the next trip. So there's more or whatever. The food after our seeds go through huge amounts of canada. Yeah well that's just too cool. Well this is really fun. I own a sailboat. A long time. Ago that i had them lake for a few years and it was just barely enough to kind of understand how satisfying it must be to accomplish a goal. Like what you did and sailing to hawaii by yourself in a small bow and everything you've done since really inspiring and i gotta just i dunno cheery on. I don't know if this is if you plan on doing this for years and decades or you kind of just gonna see what happens or Maybe you can. We can end this. By what what are your. What are your long term goals. You have a you quit your job. So i guess you don't own you back but what where do you see like the future for you. I don't really know i did. Go back at one point to my job for like a contract and that worked pretty well. Because 'cause i was able to work for a little bit sale for sale right afterwards but you did. The top end is really you know really wide open. You know that she has youtube channels making a million dollars a year and like anything in between right so could be making fun to see. If i could grow bigger or or i mean if it doesn't that's fine too it's kind of just fun to i've i'm i'm not making the failing to make the youtube videos sailing because i want to. So you know. But i i could allow support you know through it now so i does. It doesn't really take a time for me to get a sense just on my phone so or not. let's see like fishing fishing. Ads like another aspect to sailing. Sodas filming videos between now filming videos as you sail that definitely fills in any extra cracks and time in your of your trip even just planning out the content. I'm sure it gives me a fun way to look at things like something i wouldn't necessarily have is that now it's like. How can i film this. You know these group dolphins. I mean see so. Dolphins doesn't mean anything but it's like it's kind of new some footage of that and i thought. Oh i don't want to be looking at the world through my camera but It kinda adds up in a starting point when it just kind of becomes the same sh. Yeah well i love you to love seeing things that you would never have a chance to see otherwise you know and there's lots of examples of this could be like what we do like work and equipment and whatever but also sailing and people who are mountaineering rock climbing. You get a kind of see things that you otherwise wouldn't see so it's i think it's really valuable and cool and i hope you keep on. I don't know we'll. I guess we'll see what happens but keep at it and I can't thank you enough for coming on. I will link to art to your channel and instagram for our audience. But is there anywhere besides your youtube channel or instagram. That we should Direct people if they are if they wanna see some of these things. We're talking about now. Just a sam. Holmes sailing youtube or instagram. That all right. Sam well thanks again. Have a good winner. And best of luck on your atlantic crossing. And that's in the summers at right. May you said yeah all right. We'll be safe. Fan will catch up with you some point after that's behind you you bet take care..

"Achievement sailing project so accomplishment. So where do you go from here. Do you have another list of a big trips that you're kind of putting out on your calendar or what's in the future for you I didn't want say over the winter. So i i pulled my boat out in north carolina now and i just browse like kinda through crisis and i found this workshop. I wasn't really finding on buying a property But those pretty cheap. I think it'd be great to have a place. I can put my boat and homebase music storage unit and a workshop and i'm just exiting by boat up and then around maybe probably late may early june I'm planning to cross the atlantic on my cape dory twenty eight the boat. I sailed up and down the east coast and from there. I don't know just play it by ear so Probably kind of cruise around europe and stuff and then mail maybe sale back. I love to do a circumnavigation. Maybe in this though maybe another one don't really know kinda playing by trip. I but the atlantic crossing by next goal. I i just wanna be sea for a few weeks at a. You know one big stretch. I think that'd be fun. Well you've been you've done it before. So is that when you when people do a circum navigation is air one general direction that everybody travels. That's the most favourable with winds and such in other words. Are you going the wrong direction to just continue. If you get to europe and decide to keep going to do around the world in how how work yeah stop. The trade winds usually go east to west so going across the atlantic. I'd be going kind of the opposite way. I end up kind of going through northern europe. And then maybe working my way down in the mediterranean into africa. A little bit. And i'd probably cross back over and maybe like the caribbean and if i wanted to continue circumnavigation i'd go up to 'em through the panic now and then that's i've already done hawaii. I'd probably go down to the south pacific kinda continue to go around the. It's called the trade wind route so you'd probably going more down with than upland and it's also at that. That's kind of opposite to the southern ocean. Approach where you'd be going the other way west to east and that much stronger if gonna try to do a record attempt or something. Usually you kinda circle around antarctica man. Well i hope you do that. Just sounds adventure is the word because all of these places you just rattled off obviously europe in the mediterranean but then going down Down to the panama canal south pacific. It just it really is like the call of adventure so while you're on the boat for weeks at a time are you reading. Are you kinda working on. I don't know what what what takes the time when you're bored or what. What do you feel like the gaps with. I know you're not bored like there's nothing to do. 'cause you're sailing the whole time but do you get to read much of so what you read or what. What are you kind of Doing on those weeks. At a time as i read books. I got a kindle. Second put a lot of books on there. There was one of the things myself why i didn't i kind of what's more focused on getting a boat ready to go. I just kind of loaded a bunch of books. As i was leaving gaza still sailing out and still instead cell signal and i kind of ran out. I didn't realize how much how much you can really get through book when he decided that that amount of time Down download videos Lots of us. I also had whatever spotify downloaded lists is like iran through those songs and got tired of him because it was just the same ones over and over. Of course you don't have cell signal when you're that far out. I did have a lot of podcasts. Kind of backlogs. That's a good thing to do but then again. Yeah so preparing. Everything tastes a lot longer out there. Like preparing a meal Just because every little movement you do have to brace yourself on a small boat so just moving from one side of the boat takes long time like fishing. For example i've got a lot of flack for not finishing enough. Yeah but what the hell out. Time on a shorter passages just like. You're you're always a little kind of malays of like maybe not quite always see sickness. But it's kind of like a drowsiness. Kinda hard to motivate me to do more than the bare minimum to keep the boat sailing. Yeah it's easy. How maybe maybe after five or six days get point where like okay. You could start reading more books and being a little more productive working on both projects And i did a little bit. i don't know. I think i caught a lot in the past. And that doesn't motivate me to keep trying in the future so it's like a catch twenty two. I don't catch stuff. 'cause i don't fish and i don't fish because they don't catch anymore i just i have some fishing gear. Trolling when you're sailing you're kind of going at a constant speed so you're it's actually pretty good speed patrolling But you're not necessarily seeking out. Maybe a spot where you know when you're dropping the line you kind of find a good spot where you can get consecutively catch fish. So it's not always exciting. But i do see these other videos and people who pull up fish every passage so maybe i need to need to be working harder on that yet. I bet you it sounds easy. Why don't you fishing. But it's it's not easy between setting it up and rigging and maintaining the bay and then if you catch something now you're right. There's big fish out there. Yes i mean. I have my line kind of it'll break before i catch up on the huge but yeah really that can take a time of campus. I can vote to slow down a little bit but yeah trying to get your hands. Full just keeping your vote. Sales wins over a certain speed. You don't wanna be crawling around the cockpit unnecessarily. I wanna fashion. Yeah with you. I could see where fishing would be like a really great thing. 'cause you can kind of back and forth in that would make probably a lot more sense. Who knows maybe. Maybe you'll crack the code and start posting videos fish plus like scaling fish or even flat flaine is like if you get a bigger one. It's like that's messy and you had been takes it. I've done before my boat and it's just like the entire people like that much but it's it's a big hassle. I catch the flying fish. And i scale them and having for breakfast scale i'm having for breakfast are pretty good but Yeah it's kind of a a project. They're delicious that i would love to. I love the you know some. Yeah she finds that. You're hungry when i'm home. I don't know. I'm like eating constantly. It's like habit you know it probably a anyways when you're on a boat obviously your food is pretty planned out and setting setting right right in front of you to say say space all your food. I would the good stuff right away. So i'm gonna make that my goal. My hawaii passage i all my candy and the first week or something like every time i would like do something had to go out in the cold and like say like okay. I deserve a tree So i'm like face myself more and like have like ziplock bags it'd be like this is for you know day number five. You know they need some way to ration it. 'cause i or maybe just hide it i because l. another thing i would like fall in the that. Would that was saved. Gino hungry towards the end of the passage route. I found it sweet. And i this package of dried mango something. Oh my gosh. I was so. Have you guys only living on and soup and pasta. The what you need to do is just bring like six times as much candy as on the next trip. So there's more.

"So that's what we got. What's the what's the difference. You said the southern ocean has big waves. The south pacific are ways. Bigger down there because of the season down there. We're all the the ocean racers go. They go. I mean it's basically a hurricane strength winds as often as it isn't a route there's going around the globe down there and that's where the real big stuff happens. The trade wind route would be more like you know going through the panama canal. And who i and it's still you can still eventually. You'll eventually run into some some bigger stuff but not like down there while that's really amazing. So can you give a brief i. I don't know anything about sailing. But just a brief explanation of how your boat steers itself number one number two. I assume your boat is still sailing at nighttime. And you're sleeping and those kind of things are just hard for me to visualize being by yourself and your boat moving through the water. There could be. I don't know another boat or who knows what in the water. And i guess you're just kind of have a level of trust you won't find it or how do all those things work Do you have to recalibrate your course every morning just because it's not perfect steering or can you explain some of that to a guy who knows nothing. Yeah so i get asked that a lot. Do i anchor at night. What do i do when i'm sleeping. And of course an ocean. It's it's too deep to anchor And it just wouldn't be you'd be you're wasting time where you could be sailing to right so you say all through the night if there's wind The main my favorite way to have the vote self steer. It's called a win vain self steering system and so that it's basically completely mechanical. It doesn't use any electricity and so the winds are pretty consistent offshore. Maybe changing you know ten degrees. And i'm oh. And so the the the way that works is that you set it to the angle of the wind knowing that is going to be consistent and but will steer on that same angle of the wind right so if the wind did shift if degrees your vote. Course it's shifting degrees but in the grand scheme of things that's not too bad. I'd rather have the boat inge direction a little bit. I'm just stay sleeping as long as you're out in the ocean aerobics. If you're in a bay or something that could mean you're gonna run into land or you know some areas. Don't you really don't want to go but That's that's that's and that's a really great because there's electrcity it's very resilient like the stronger the wind the stronger the steering forces are a disused as like the speed of the boat liu into the widest era. And then it isn't that when the winds get lighter or if i am steering Closer to land in. i didn't like in the chesapeake. i i use the electronic autopilot And that's just yours to a magnetic compass. Course it's the lower body arm kind of on the taylor and so that use a little bit more. The eases battery power. But that's kind of alternate between those depending on the conditions. If one of them out of commission i could use the other one and As far as like watching out for other votes There's like the common thing for solo sailors to you every ten or twenty ten between ten and twenty minutes usually kinda depending on how far you are away from things You just wake up your head around and if you see any lights and you have to kind of stay awake until you can be sure that you're gonna clear them In you can calculate how how far you can travel in the amount of time. You're going to be asleep. Or how far abo- you could see a boat from the horizon. That could potentially run into you now on my new vote. I have asked us them so all the big boats transmitting a signal. There should be a With their position. And i so i can receive that position and set an alarm. That will tell me if they're gonna be on a collision course with one of those votes. I didn't have that at the time And that won't protect you against every boat. You know it's more votes aren't gonna have that but it does help. Wow that's really neat In terms of arriving in hawaii for example you know if i was driving you know i i can. I know i could drive into a city and find a place to park and all that. But i've really noticed and just kind of thought about you. Know when you sail into big islander wherever you've never been in those harbors before or not exactly where to park and now you're on the east coast doing that and all kinds of different places. And i was kinda scratch my head and are you is there. Can you describe the protocols of where you can safely park your boat and and kinda get out and how that works as like a every harbor have like a number you call to have someone kinda tell you where to go or is it a little bit like a free for all or how does that work among like boaters. I'm sure it's very common. But i never never thought about it. It varies a lot from where you are like state to state or even harbor harbor like i think the general rule is you can anchor anywhere as long as you're not in a mark channel like Or is prohibited. But some places like hawaii. Where like all the harbor anchor. Unless they have that you can do it for up to three days or something and then you have to get a permit and then permanently can last for so long So so when i got to hawaii i remember it. I was i had to check in with the harbourmaster And i got a permanent for a few months to stay on the big island before i kept sailing on but a lot of places that gets you can just anchor and no one will about a u Like i some places there and harass you and that you need a permit or something. But i i like to Just anchor and then ask for forgiveness later. Yeah julie 'cause he's come out and let you know 'cause i mean the the regulations aren't really well hosted. Sometimes i kinda hard to figure out but yeah sometimes they have a phone number or a radio frequency. You can call kinda kinda figure it out as you go. Wow yeah and especially if it's nighttime in his dark or it's really late you know. What are you gonna gonna call. I'm sure you kinda gotta take care of yourself. A little bit Yeah the thing to do is to kind of to offshore away until the daylight they'll come in but usually i'm so tired i just i just really want to be there and i've kind of gotten pretty comfortable kinda judging if anchorage is going to be approachable at night and then i just kind of find a open spot anchor. What are the. What are the people like that you've met you know you've i assume run into a lot of other sailors and full-time boating types. And is there like a common thread among these types of people who are just traveling and this kind of adventure on a regular basis or is it a real mixed bag. Or what have you found in terms of the the people you are meeting. It's kind of mixed. I mean there's a few young people It means a lot older retired people especially on the inner coastal waterways. The east coast even yet on the ocean stuff. It's not probably not quite as many younger people doing it. It seems like But then there's some people they're just there are some people have nothing at all you know just have a boat and.

"Nate. Our discussion today is with sam. Holmes now in two thousand nineteen in the spring. Sam sailed solo from california to hawaii in a twenty three foot boat and he made a video of it and put it online and he has since grown his channel and shared a lot more sailing content and this is a conversation with him mostly about that trip to hawaii but also about sailing and this kind of adventure boat lifestyle. You'll you'll get the message right away. That i don't know very much about sailing and so the questions and lots of the things i'm asking him are very basic but pay for me. It's interesting and i gotta assume. Many of our listeners have not sailed much. So i hope you enjoy it. I i gotta say for the record. I am just a huge fan of this guy is just inspiring to see someone accomplish goal of this magnitude and i certainly have thought when i was younger. I thought i going to do that sometime. I imagined i would be able to make something like that happened. And i don't think i ever will possibly but It's not a small thing and so to see someone who sets a goal like that and reaches out and accomplishes it with with just not say basic tools or equipment but if you watch the video you'll see that sam did this with very affordable and i i would say every man kind of gear and just a absolute positive and inspiring attitude.

"Upside down and time. That's all the time. We'll thank you for playing. Wow really good well done. Y'all i can say that each of you run a tight ship. It's decision time. It's time to determine who tried to rig our game. Naomi who is our big fibber. I think it's emily. Why do you think. Emily is our big fibber fee. 'cause andy answered a lot of very hard question did you don't think the questions that emily answered were difficult at all. They were difficult. But i think they were difficult. Hand okay very good. We're going to find out now. We'll actual sailing expert. Please identify yourself. I am feeling experts. That is correct. Oh my goodness. Emily pilots and has been a sale instructor and the summer camper sixteen years. I know it's time for some fact checking. Emily did andy share. That made you feel unmortgaged. Well got the dates of the first time that the olympics featured sailing was incorrect sailing was actually scheduled in the very first modern olympic games in eighteen ninety six but then they had to cancel it because the weather was so the first time that anyone actually competed in olympic sailing was in one thousand nine hundred. Although at that time it wasn't even called sailing it was called yachting into sailing in two thousand so now it's called sailing and it's really fun to watch olympic sailing very good okay and then were there others. If he said let's ask him so we ask ask him and andy. Tell us how you tried to rock the boat. Well there were a couple of different things it. I said Oh the aqua vale was completely wrong. The race that goes around. The world is the vendee. Theo van debilitate yes. Name that the aqua- vale But that is a race that that exists that go around the world on your own without any help. Raise each vote just back. Stroking don't know if people keep cats on both or or not. I just thought that that would be fun to have cats on boats. So the phobia. I wouldn't expect anybody to know this really. But the phobia of wind. The fear of wind is a phobia. Ancram phobia is the fear of wind up high. That would be a difficult thing to have if you were in fact Salem salem sailors don't know anyone with a fear of win. No i wouldn't think so And saddam means that whole story about the fisher boat fishermen flares that was all. That was all fake. My i do know a couple of sailors. My mother-in-law is a sailor. She was actually on a show at one point. One of those Cameras shows that. Oh amazing events where they ran into a power line and they're up on phone laid down in the caribbean and off. So that i know some sailors. But i don't i. I am not sailed myself in any ocean races or anything like that. I did a little bit of research about some things I don't know that cr called water. Weasels um fine. I was going to try.

"Because apparently that doesn't taste as good coming back up. Oh dear that's good. Is there something that people can do either of you to prevent the becoming seasick. Y'all stay on land ever. Oh yeah that would work the best. I do know people who have used these certain kind of wrist bands that put pressure on a certain point on your wrist. I don't know whether they really work on numb. I tend to stick to sailing on lakes and calmer waters so it doesn't. It's not a big problem for me but it doesn't seem very fun no This one is for angie when you jock your boat what you call you tied up with. Oh that makes me think of my helmsman. my helmsmen usually says whatever you can find But i it's called the line. But i seen him grab that the boat cat at times and threatened to tie tie up with that always makes. He's never he has never done it. that i know of I think i would have heard about that but you keep a cat as an animal on the boat. Absolutely when you're coming into port or if you're doing any moorings you can you can tend to pick up rats So often if you're going off shore to get provisions and stuff like that For the next leg. Oftentimes you can get rats. That will come on board and so we absolutely keep a cat. We've had two different cats on this boat. The current cat pixie Then she's great. She's about nine. Yeah but super helpful and they like being on a boat. They don't seem to mind. What do you know they got the lots of climbing area and And as much as we can catch that's true. Lots of fish. Sure this this one. Is i m emily to favorite time out sailing. If so what is it. What is it. Oh i love that question. I do know a good song about sailing. It was originally written in swedish. But it's been translated into lots of language. As i've heard it sung in french and an english it goes like this bad Sorry that was swedish English it goes like this who can say l. without wind. Who can do without those who can separate from their friends without shedding tears and it goes on and on so it's really nice and you can sing it. Multiple people in different languages singing at the same time. Oh who is it. The we ever. I never heard that. I can one one long rhetorical question exactly. Also why is there. Why do why. Taylor's like to sing so much. Yeah what's there to sing about emily. Well I don't know for sure if i had to guess i would say that. Maybe because long ago people would go on long sailing voyages and they didn't have ipads even phones. Pass the time with so. Do i know it's so hard to imagine. One of the things. They must have done to pass. The time together would be singing. I guess they get tired of listening to their cat probably. Yeah wow so. This one is for anti. Have you ever been a dangerous situation while sailing how you get out of it absolutely i mean. There's there's many things that can go wrong You're always at the mercy of mother. Nature but the oddest one. That i've ever been involved in. We were doing a transpac race. Which is from San diego to hawaii and we were in the final leg and we noticed that there was a fishing boat and there is no fishing in those waters between those two areas and we actually broke off the race From our line and approach the boat too late let them know that we were contacting authorities in the coastguard and they actually started firing flare guns at us which is insanely dangerous for sales. Because i mean you're you're talking about a boat with fiberglass and and and lots of flammable things on board. So i mean. Luckily no one was hurt. The authorities showed up In good time but we did not finish that race. But i feel like we did the correct thing in that moment. Yeah you feel. It's time for the short on fire around when our experts have to answer as many questions as they can before time runs out experts. Batten down the hatches. Us smooth never made a skilled sailor. Naomi let's start with andy. You can ask your shorts on fire questions now. What to scaring wheel attached to that would be the rudder which type of boat s to halls catamaran up to what number of sales kennedy dinghy sailboat. Have you can have up to three. Kind of phobia is the fear of wind House as to sales. What are the sales called. Main sail sailing. I become an olympic sport. I need the same year as synchronized swimming. I wanna see. That is time because all the time. Listen you can't have any more time. Unless he pays fourteen ninety nine a month. Anybody anybody wanna pay us okay. Probably not no takers. all right. we're going to move onto okay. Naomi you can. Now ask emily her shorts on fire questions now. What's the first thing someone who wants to learn to sail to learn. They should learn how to swim. Two knots that are useful and sailing. A figure eight knots. Abol win an pitch. That was i disqualified. Timothy stop ryan. Who is the cartoon sailor. And i should mention that. I'll be directing producing shooting and editing. It as well wow. That's that's a lot of work. But i'm sure it'll be a great film it will. I'm just trying to figure out the casting. Obviously i will be playing myself. And i figure i'll ask our experts liars and kids to audition for parts but the host. You need someone to be me like got to know me. Good one deborah no The podcast host in my movie is named veronica rube blais and she is in various villain who tries to rid the world of sound effects. I see how that could be a challenging role to cast. Yeah well for now. You can conduct some research for your movie. Perhaps by doing your day job and telling us how our game works new research good idea. Thank you coming in terms of ideas. Those are great idea. So go ahead and do that. Oh the game oak. Every week we bring onto grownups. One is an expert. the other is a liar in. It's yeah above a human child to help us figure out. Who is you can spot a liar better than a kid. At least we We hope i mean. That's what we printed on the shirt. What are we lying about today. Deborah we are lying about sailing navigating. A ship powered by wind caught by sheets of strong cloth. These do you know much about sailing. Not a fam-. oh really. why not too windy. The wind really messes up my hair. Well luckily you don't need to learn about sailing today. And neither does our contestant lisa. Please tell us about our contested. Today are human child contestant. Who's an eight year old. Who loves to battle bay blades with their brothers. Nyayo me roth's hi. Naomi how are you today. I am so glad to hear. Welcome to the big fib. Let's talk about battling bay blades with your brothers. Lots of alliteration there. I liked that very much shot to them. What are their names. Jesse and russell jesse and russell. Hey guys okay. And what is your favorite. Babe played well. I have to babe leitch at our mind. Names sprite and wife. Ron i see and who wins most of the battles in your family jesse as like a lot of favorites so he and they're good so his usually winners usually sometimes mindue or russell's it's still worth playing. You still have a fighting chance right. Yeah and what do you say right before you Were you start a battle. Don't you have to say something. Well when you're launching it you say let it rip right. Okay well we definitely wanna let it rip for this show. Don't wanna rip debra hill. Oh why is that. A bad thing smells when you let it rip. I'm sure. I don't know what you mean. But i want to know some more fun facts about you. Naomi and i'm sure lisa does too so we are going to play a game called to and ally you are gonna tell us three facts about yourself. Two of those facts will be true. One will be ally and we have to guess which one of those facts is a lie naomi. What are your three facts. okay. I love ninjas on learning the ukulele. You spend to australia well. This one's pretty is deborah. We previously learned that. She's into bay. Blades yes we did. We learn that she plays with her brother. That's from there. We can extrapolate out that. She's probably into the tv show in and she probably blazing with her two brothers now. We go over to the ukulele. That one is also true because it is a musical instrument was the fact that people can play musical instruments. Some of them. Yes that's true. Some of them can. So you're saying that the fact that she's been to australia is her lie. Alright naomi which is why. I tend into australia off again. But that doesn't mean that you love ninjas yet the i liked to jog and soda my brothers and you're also learning the ukulele. That's fun can play any songs yet or you're still learning some of the notes and chords. I can play some songs. I can play a green day. Song called good riddance and i will. I actually am learning that. Once in i can play living on a prayer. Wow good songs. I like it very cool. I also like writing my own songs. Oh you're right a song together. Now it'd be cool. Can you one right now. Yeah hey naomi what's going on of that song You've heard them here. i everybody. We're following your rising star. Naomi our first expert is andy. Cobo andy please introduce yourself to or me too low naomi. My name is andy though. And i am a come additive. Thank you very much. Our second expert. Is emily dickinson. Emily these introduce yourself to mail me. Pyeho me my name is. And i'm sailing instructor so i teach kids like you have the sale rate then nazi tell us about those booming sound horn. There it's hot seat time. That's what we put our experts on the hot seat while they answer. Naomi's weston's lisa. Shall we put on the happy first. Andy colville because kabul rhymes with oval an oval shaped that. I know that's a good reason. Ended as a reason and therefore he good reason naomi. What question do you have four. Andy do you have a goal in your job. You try to achieve. Well yeah i mean. At the end of the day week. We tend to try and win a race. But i think a lot of times Working together as a team is really important. And it's almost like a dance on any sailing vessel Where everyone really has to pay attention and kind of work together so getting to this kind of sweet spot where it's a kinda seamlessness between each of the persons on the belt is where i try and achieve at least and i think that ends up leading to better times better races this question for emily. What's the most funny thing that's happened in your job. Oh that's a great question. They owe me well. One summer day. I had some students out sailing with me on the lake and There was a pair of sailors who are off in about a little ways. Away for me and air boat capsized which means the tip over and that happens all the time. It's no big deal. It's one of the things that they learn Is to get to that situation but this boat they were having a really hard time getting it back up again so i took my my motorboat the safety boat over to where they were and i could see that they were waving their arms and trying to tell me that something was wrong and it turned out that the mass which is a very important part of the boat that holds the sale had fallen off the boat and sunk to the bottom leak and it was at the time. Maybe it wasn't so funny but now whenever we let story everyone just laughs and laughs. Because i had no idea that that was even something that we needed to worry about so It's a pretty funny story to tell now. Good one This one is for andy. Have you ever gotten seasick. How can you prevent getting seasick. Yes i think. Actually don't get seasick. I don't know What i've been blessed with but That that has been a thing. I've actually never had to deal with but i A lot of my boat mates will often have dramamine with them And do not.

"She would text us every time. She texted us. We would always right back. Yes it had to be hard for her. Divorce had to be hard and it was so then it starts to become. She would ask for pictures which were always happy to share and it was currently. We heard from her once a month and then it just kind of dropped out after actively chat to her. Will you just wait? Overhead is is that we would let her in the seat for and then you did want and I always said no like can always has to be on her terms. Did you have a conversation with her about that? Like did you guys know what the boundaries were you just kind of. We're going with your on. Anything really specific but when she would write us like he's just say hey. This is how you know. Hope you're up to see pictures of the girls. We say absolutely anytime whenever you were happy to share them. Yeah because you don't want to send it like what if she's not extinct receive it right. Yeah ever wanted to impose that so after about six months she we just start. You're hearing from her and we're thinking maybe she maybe she's going through something. Hershey's it's too painful. Or what did she say? Okay and yet. There's a need to see them and then out of the blue we got and this was two months before we were going to finalize. Helen is adoption. So it take California Alec when you can take a while some places it's like three weeks you'll be finalized California listener experience. It's literally like to the day of their birth when we get a call from the attorney and I'm like no Wisey online. Why's he calling you like? Is there something wrong? And he calls to say that she's pregnant again and she's looking to place in wants. No if we're interested and I was like way way and now six months in or sediments. We started talking about wanting a sibling for Helena. Because you know the universe heard you loud and clear and beer close with are simply means and we wanted her to have the same experience and there was in front of us and we didn't truly say yes right away. 'cause we were like we are barely just threw a year with Helen. Like how soon could we do this whole process again? You know like we had just finished our posts placements you do post placed in critics months or six months after the baby is space with you so to start the whole process again in Tennessee. Back in that in that space was a real question but really what it came down to. We knew we wanted to have another. And we care a lot or their birth mom and we had done this together identity and she said she wants everything done exactly the same way. Same social workers say lawyer same hospital. She had done it one. She knew she could do it again. You know she was going to be in front of her and she knew that it would be Albright and she knew us. And Yeah and and there'd be together and one of the things that I think can be something that is scary about the process. There is a lot of trust that goes involved with adoption. Because you are not there you are sir. The mother is their own free will person and and they are allowed to do whatever they please but we were very lucky. Even the nurses in the hospital said you guys are so lucky to be adopting baby. We didn't have to run any drug screens in the owl screening Rambo. They ran them but they were clear. That's what it was. That's what they were have to. We can just sell. She's a nice person that's what they were saying. Oh we did have a bit of like a surrogacy type relationship. Because even with Helena. Her plan was to have us in the room and because of where she's located it was. It was a couple of hours drive for us and so that was essentially a possibility. You know he said look whenever you tell us this is happening. We will get in a car and we will go and so although we weren't able to be in the room for Hound US birth. We actually did get to the root for Libya's birth and we were like holding her hands and reading with her at the core. Livia being more. I mean if you had a surrogacy adoption experience I can't get over it. No WE ARE. Truthfully we were so blessed and Lucky Way. It has happened and there were. There were coal obstacles. They were our initial plan was to yes. Bring her here a month prior tour due dates. I think that's what it was. Yeah and it was around the holidays and and yet it's going to be. She was going to have to be away from her family for Thanksgiving and so related would've retune. We tried you here. We are looking at hiring a midwife to be in the car hourly looking at the MAC like Google maps. The two points in typing like search for Hospitals House is on the way and then what ended up being decided was that she would stay with with your WanNa. I don't WanNa Code. And we were like relieved in a way. Yeah I mean I would say we were. I was I was really because I was like the only great because there's one yes plans and not a plan that involves easy like why Scenarios One's it was decided that that's what we're GONNA do. We already have idea what. That's lame beaver. Stay at home plan was yes. It was early Zionist around out though. So David our attorney says if if you have the birth mother in here with you the away Sadler. They are from where they are. The percentage of them changing their mind drops to like two or three percent raising the have the child where they may be able to with the support system. Yeah well you might be influenced in a different way. It's like a six to eight presentations that they might change their mind right now. Statistics matter obviously you know that but in this case it didn't matter every situation just like every child is unique and ways. Yeah every every situation every situation with the adoptive parents unique and different end there. It's just going to not be exactly. They say yeah yeah. Well that's every pregnancy first lesson in parenting right there right now and it really wasn't that was a giant. That was like one of the biggest Erba were. I remember simply we were saying. Why didn't anybody like hell us? This what do you tell us that if we didn't have you just can't you know? I love about this story. Though is that it's we hear so many. I wouldn't say horror but hardships luxury auction and this is your like it. It isn't always that feel good story and we meet that right now. Yeah and I mean in light. Rain said their work ups think it's also just a testament to you guys. You're both seem like really positive. Yes loving individuals. Like I want you to be my dad's happy with that actually. The social worker at the hospital was born. She was like I want you to be my carrying but we was doing two and a half years. Now which is hard to believe we have now done like almost eighty interviews and never never. Has Anyone sat down with the baby? Like a young movie them and then in the middle of it like when you were like. Oh we're we're probably going to go put her to sleep and I was just like I was like how we were like do. They have like a nanny. This living and Youtube just like. There's a dog sleeping behind you. I saw sleeping baby in the monitoring. Your show you're not panicked at the. Nobody's crying like you put a baby down in the middle of this interview and kept talking like an ass I am. I am not saying unique to us but I once took over. I wanted to Carolina to therapy with me which was really little and because I might there is really great history lovely and I was like yes. You'll come with me. You may have been running errands quickly for some reason so I had to bring her. He was like yeah bring her. Of course. 'cause she likes sat and played with toys and I think in the next time I saw him. He said something like it was the most natural thing watching. I only because you mentioned like you. We had also Shin than you took care of that baby. The entire time like it was just second nature like it was so what was eating your headphones and knocking lamps over and you did. Not even there's little anyway Blah Blah Blah. Yeah amazing. I don't know I taken her to a couple of things too. I had a wig fitting for a show. Of course is it. Okay if I bring her and they're like I guess and I'm like she'll just sit in the stroller. Homes is GonNa take like twenty minutes. I'm Mike Okay. Oh just give her some snacks. This is really like nature nurture. Were these babies both so chill or are you to just chill or is it all of the above. I don't know I haven't was absolutely chill. There's no question I mean we will look over. Be like where's Helena in a chair. And she has a pile of book of assist little sister by show throw and throw at like how they are like very happy they related. They played together. We danced Pantley. Helena says very sweeping. She'll say to the baby should say you're so cute a secured and now we take our walks and when we take our walks they look at the mountains. They're gorgeous and she said to. Wally the dog the other day. I thought it was about to cry. We were like doing nighttime routine. And while he was sitting there with us she said this pet wildly. I said okay. She's panting wildly and she said you'll always be here while I was.

"You are. Jamie you guys. You went through an agency or yes once we move to a kind of got like careers established at least mass when we started to kind of kick up into gear the adoption process again because we had started in New York to get just some details. Start to appear what it would be like. And then I actually went into Grad School. Efren Ryan went onto the Disney cruise. And he treated to. Chris contracts the second one very specifically right before we moved here was very specifically to save money for the adoption. Yep and then when we started up with the process I had worked on a TV show and made a friend. She told us that there was a straight couple who she knew and they interest adopted and that she would put us in touch with them into actually. We did meet with them and they told us about the attorney that we ended up working with his name is David Radius. And he was actually somebody who. I had already bookmarked when I did like my search for gay adoption lawyer California. He's been doing it for decades and decades even specifically working with gays and lesbians even back in the day when it was tough people had to come across state lines. No my voice salvo babies in the middle of the night and even the baby credit. Let's not put out third need just a byline that were stealing babies but that was the eighty thousand HIV stealing babies the eighties. And so we set up an appointment with him. It's a full three hours and we said can we take this and he said sure and he lated all how about this for Roy is yeah uh-huh and like things that drugs that you would want to know about that you WanNa test for you. Don't we don't have to worry about cocaine. You have to be worried about this and that and added. Here's a number you can call. You can ask them questions about with this drug due to the were. This isn't like saying the birth mother might be addicted to. Let's say math on. You can call this number and saying what can this do to the end born baby. Yes I other termination which is real other termination. And there's two types there's presumed father and the zoomed. No I'd say I'm not so sure father yet. There's like one where the fathers in the pitcher there's one whether it's unknown. They both have to be terminated. There was so much information but all really good information and so I just want to stop you there because we've talked to some men who went through the adoption process and that information from the lawyer scared them so much that they were afraid that route but you guys were not concerned by that you appreciate the information. Oh Yeah for sure. It was like okay good. It was like more information more information. I'm somebody who likes. Were information because the more information have eventually like I'm prepared to make the best decision? He Tales. I mean like like he has this whole thing about when you need the earth. Yeah you go hunt them if they step back from you. She's protecting the fetus in its non image if you hug her and she doesn't huggy back that schedule Every she's also disliked. Don't touch me right if you hucker. And she hugs you back. That's a really good time right. How does he's been doing it for so long? He e not only like knows of course all the legal business backwards and forwards but he knows people's behavior and one of the things he said was that if she doesn't think this is right it feels weird to put it out there but it doesn't cry at some during the meeting. Then that's a bit of a red flag for him because it means that she's not a straight processing all the emotions that go along with needing to go through DOPP. Yeah she's not really like one hundred percent certain Lau is. There is a loss so I tried to be either with him. So you alright. Social wherever social or or to the doctor really take them to a doctor and it's not that he was trying to make anybody cry now the fact that they are processing the emotions of how difficult is decision is and what it means is a positive sign that this will be something that this birth mom will be able to continue going through it again. He's really sussed out every single situation. That could possibly. It's so is he the guy who found the baby for you. He is so okay but we did decide just for us. It was important that we kind of have as many essentially allies as possible as many people around us who knew how this goes right who could also point out any red flags because I think our biggest concern throughout the process was still even the financial aspect of it is. All adoptions are it can change the very last minute and that is the mothers right and they should always maintain that right now but idea that it could change and then we would be out the money that we spend. It was really scary proposition. Two would we be able to do this again? Yeah right because of the money that we would have lost is just a fact of how it goes so we used our agency not just for the study but for our own purposes as well so we can talk to them. Whenever we wanted they could talk to the birth mother. I knew the social worker who we were aired with at the agency which is Vista del. Mar in Culver City and they've been around for like a hundred plus years and they do all types of family services the DASHER. They do international adoption because they help find birth mother or no they were just support services. They can not understanding. Where did the lawyer find the birth mom? Okay so we use both of them. Just put it out there so we ended up going with adoption attorney and with an agency to help us find matches and we also did all of the classes that we took the palace of the Treasury shoal adoption class. We did all that their visit del Mar and they went to did our home study as well. So they had made a batch for us. At one point he didn't. We were essential man. We weren't a potential match but because of that mom situation we decided it wasn't for us so we would have been able to continue with it vision to make. Yeah it was we. Would we situations from both the agency and the lawyer and it was up to us when when we would be presented with the birth mother's Situation whether or not we wanted to pursue a collegiate get kind of a sheet of information about her and then another she used to and then another sheet that had basically the expenses that the breakdown of fees would be one of the things that with some of the first ones that we received that we weren't aware of as far as costs with some of the ones that came to us had an additional agency fee on top of it so it was like the theme for the agency that the birth mom had contacted so we were then painted attorney our agency and then another hurry agency to broker another broker and then city like and Brian and I mean it makes sense because those people who are doing that work that is their job that is how they get paid but it was like for us. This far exceeds. Well we are able to afford so. We're not able to do those. And so in the two one Casey call about in. That just didn't end up going far but we did speak with a young woman and then with the birth of we did end up be matched with they both came directly to him and so because they came directly to him. There was no additional fee. He called us on each of those occasions to say. Hey I have somebody who I think you need to speak with. Here's the information we called and spoke with both of them and obviously ended up being matched complicated. What's the timeframe of ours is going to say the time line? So we are. We met with him and October. And then in January Ryan take it away. I got about Connecticut all so it wasn't February that we can kick things off. We were like yes David. We'd like to review and yes we would like to work with you as you retain. That was two thousand. Seventeen is when we kind of got the ball rolling. Yeah and then how quickly to the you're being placed with your birth mother July oh hey even just to back up a second. We had gotten the one from the agency that we decided that wasn't for us and then we found out about the one. Birth mom from was a David I. It was the same weekly ever two at the same week. That's nuts which I think is interesting. These happen all I can tell is that I think David. Maybe let's say David calls on Tuesday about their birth mom about we end up working with and then the agency called us about another birth. Mom wasn't Ohio and so we were in the one interesting situation. Where for a little while? We isn't like dating. You can go out with both of them. And that's what the social worker said because we were really torn because both of these women had seen our bug and wanted to speak with us so we found that we had to speak with both of them but she numbers are our book. We sent it to our after we spoke to her. We asked her if she wanted our book. She didn't choose us because she's Arba who are Them you're right. Yeah you're right. That's sure we spoke with her. And then we would you like us to send your broken to said yes. Yes and then David. I spoke with her. I think he told her about us. And then we had a conversation with her early. Got Off the phone we were like. She's great ham rice lying just using a we loved her. We loved her energy. She was being action. Yeah there really was. It was maybe a ten minute on but she was very open and honest and we were laughing with her. Any there was truthfully in that moment something that was like this. There's something here we like her and I just remember also during that time like we said okay me we send you the book and she said yes she gives her dress and we sent the buck and we were texting with her and she said I make my decision this weekend or something is made me feel really bill better out. There was I mean there was there was there was some kind of connection there. Like from the gap pass to be right. There has to be because you have over to someone. Yeah because you also had conversations with other women and you didn't feel that connection and then you had this random conversation it was like there's something here it's about the long way she at that point. She was three months which early awesome attorneys will not place until the third trimester. But David I think one of his things philosophies that he will place early because then you get to create a on together. We wanted that one of the things that we knew that why we were open to open. Adoption was because we wanted. Whoever this was going to be to be somebody would want to have in our lives in the future. You know like in some capacity in some capacity. Whatever they wanted that to be we were going to want that. So you know that just kind of connection was important. You know their birth mom is somebody who do you know still have in our lives as almost like you had a sturgis. He Path with her. Because you're with her so like it's almost like with her. Do it. Like that seems rare in the. That's so interesting. I wanted to say something prior just in terms of talking to a birth mother Burying nerve wracking bowls are agents and David David. The attorney gave us the same guidelines. About how how to have a conversation with a stranger who you're asking to to know about to raise their child and be the parents of their child and that was very scary advantage barrier. Americans I remember specifically David Diploam. Sure the agency to do laid out. How the conversation should ago like like it. Was Larry Clear. It was like this visit. Had A pronounced okay awesome. We just Kinda followed. That thing in life was always like you end with you know. Would you like your like? It was very specific question. You don't bring up you. Don't ask never beat the conversation. Yeah it was pretty specific. Don't ask questions like why. Don't you want this baby right from big brother? Thank we didn't even. It's probably like one of them is like you. Don't bring up the baby like Utah. Jazz South Pass yet when daylight emotional. Yeah what kind of music do you like? Yeah we saw on staff. Yeah that's so hard because it's like you're talking around what's happening. It's like an elephant in the room. In a way thing is I feel like she always brought it up. You're like again. It was nice and she was so honest and communicate to him about her feelings throughout the whole process up until the night before or the day before. Yeah she hospital Jamie and yeah yeah telling you know we were very luck. We were very very very lucky. One of the first thing she said when we met her. We said we're opening Just like to know that the baby is happy and healthy in taking care of a good friend in your life. That's perfectly went into applebee's in the bathroom crying. I think this is this is it. That's earth by December. Had a healthy happy baby and had by that a beautiful relationship with our birth mom. She would text us every time. She texted us. We would always right back. Yes it had to be hard for her. Divorce had to be hard and it was.

"So funny. You're like no big deal. Yeah and that was a major major consideration. I don't think either of us. Who now she's going to this is you know. I don't know how sustained except that. It was like okay. Well then that's how we'll have a family you know like we weren't we weren't so tied to to be biologically related to whoever our child would be that came to that. It was just like okay. You know to put it. Aside was a wasn't a big sacrifice hours a consolation yard. Whatever will be will do this right. Biology just didn't matter to the manner to Netanyahu not us and I'm sure that's a lot in part due to the fact that Ryan you have an adopted sister in your know that it doesn't matter now earns about like you know because the one thing about surrogacy versus adoption is. There's a little bit more. Maybe not real but perceived control over the timeframe you know like it so were you concerned that for adoption. I mean there is a war stories about adoption taking two three four or five years. Yes yes yes. I don't think we were really came and never really came up but what did start to become a reason behind moving in the way that we did was like our age. Yeah so we started to go. Oh you know what we should really kind start moving on this. Just because of the mass of it ought to be a certain age when our children are old enough that we can still enjoy their life with them yet and so that became part of okay. We should we really need to start looking into this name. Do think at one point none of those out. I think I might have. I would love to have kids by the time I was forty forty two. How old were you when you started talking about it? Well we cert- so actually when we were still in New York so seven years now. We decided we would go to the game. Lesbian Gay and Lesbian Center or as ways to Yep Yep so we decided we would go to that and just kind of get a little lay of the land and I remember the first time we were there. We're going around grooming people you know. We're telling their story We're looking at adopting like five years. So hot and everyone's like I've been trying to have kids five years however Yano Laker story was just so different. The one thing that I really remember was the one who ran always started every meeting To she just said if you want to be parents you welby. That's it. It's going to make it happen. No matter what path it is how long it takes what you have to do to get there. It will happen for you and I thought that was really comforting. There were people there who are already parents talked about. It just showed up out of the kindness of their hearts. I think for community and the second time we went they had someone from. Help US adopt. Yeah and I I remember yeah I. That was an interesting that we hadn't heard about your ever talked about the fact that there's grants for adoption about the tax credit. But I don't. I never heard anyone say there was grants. We'd heard of surrogacy grants and help for surrogacy. But we've never heard about help. It's a resource racers loose so nice to nice all the details. It's been awhile. It should probably be a good resource hopefully for some reminder to people that they need to look into that before they get things moving so that's a great note for our listeners. They were to bury stressful points of the adoption of the book. That you may as you make. We'll get down. That was very important for us. Oh the book for birth mother. Choose you. We've heard a lot about these books and that sounds like a whole thing was the homestudy like you know. Easy year lease for us. We have heard that people have a hard time answering basic questions grievances entry in question themselves. I didn't even. I didn't think it was basically. We were at a class for study about transracial adoption in doing the class was like how are you with all these basic questions. They ask Gay People ask US invasive questions twenty four seven and we're I feel like as as writers as as hard as artists to open. That's what you do is yeah. Please ask me more questions about myself. Asking Act having to say. Why are you working on this? Why do you WanNa do this? What are you writing this about? What emotions did you go through? When battle aiding this lurk so it was very it truly was very easy for us to have a stranger in our home and questions about our lives as. I'm so glad you asked me that question. Thank you I. I told the social worker. Do two separate interviews separately met together and I went. I separate and get your pencil ready because I'm open black. It was a free therapy. Free.

But you know what's good about this interview is it's like it's one of the like we don't always get adoption stories that are like smooth easy sailing and this is one of them so this is a good one. Really heartwarming one. She we have Helen. Roll tape. Roll that interview Allen. Roll the tape. Bring them in all right here. We go.
