"An Amazon place online during Christmas? Want to do that? That's the key here, George. Look at the demographics do do people want to leave their homes anymore? Do they want to go out and do this? They want to deal with the crowd. The there's There's a younger crowd that want to, you know, mill about and do those things. But are they buying? Look, I just bought a box of paper towels right for my ST Louis place. That it had it shipped there. Okay, it is there. I mean, I'm not going to go to the store and walk around with a tub of paper towels Exact, but you you go online. You do it. It's done. It's delivered. It's at your door. And you know, it's not easy on Amazon Prime, You know if it's amazing in your big, bulky stuff, you know once the any of this stuff Uh, George. I think the whole retail mall structure is in for an enormous shock and with it Look at all of the employment that that goes with the guy who owns the Los Angeles Rams, formerly the ST Louis Rams, formerly the Los Angeles Rams. Stand crunk E. Owns most of the WalMart real estate that he leases toe walmart. He married into the Wal Mart family, Andi, he be developed the buildings That Wal Mart houses and releases it to them. What happens when even some of those stores start to go Look out. You know what happens to Teo lease rates. They're going to plunge and I think All of these things. Sure goingto happen. They don't necessarily happen all at once. Heaven forbid, George, if they do happen all at once. David Saginaw, Michigan is with us now. I give it go ahead. Hi. Thanks for the show and things for your guests. You're very welcome. I'm a first time caller, and I've listened to you guys for a long, long time. Appreciate it. We have a Sears and pennies in Saginaw, Michigan. At a major mall. That's been an anchor in this area. Um, for as long as I can remember. You mentioned Christmas a couple minutes ago. I went out there for Christmas. 3/4 of my house garage basement is Ceres. I've been shopping. It's serious for probably 55 years at least. And I went out there at Christmas time this past year. And when I drove up to the parking lot, and this was mid December There were eight cars in the parking lot. I did I went Into should have impact. Multiple ways to get into the store. Um, like I say, it's been an anchor that mall for as long as I can remember, I walked in the store to look for what I wanted, which was in the tool department, the Craftsman And I looked around there and found what I wanted. I decided to go down and look at some stuff for my wife. And I don't think I encountered two clerks. In the store. At the checkout areas. Or 10 people in the store mid December. And we've got well. We had three K mart here. In the Saginaw area. Immediate one, um, a mile and 1/2 from my house. They had a roof collapse two years ago from heavy snow. They put the store on lock down and shipped all the merchandise to a couple of the other stores. With the intention supposedly of rebuilding the store. Never did, did they? No, They did not know. Um, the other two Kmarts. They're gone. They just closed the Sears in Midland mesh again 25 miles away from here. In the mall over there. The Saginaw Sears does still have an automotive shop area a separate building. I've had many, many auto repairs over the years there. I've always done good work, and they've had decent prices. Last time I was in that store. That part of the operation for some minor work done. I was the only car building getting work done. They had three mechanics in that building and two guys in the front end on the computers. And I can remember when you had to call and make it a point. That's right to get into that story to get your work done. Now they can't wait to pull you in. There's nobody in any of the stores. We just had. When I heard this on the radio and on the TV yesterday, it really made me nervous because I've got a lot of service contract my washing machine. My Oh, yeah, exactly. And I have a very small balance on my Sears credit card. I'm wondering winner if they go belly up. Am I still going to be able to get those contracts on Earth? I I don't think so. Not George. I don't think so. And the CIA's credit card proof that's going to go by the wayside to. Well, you still owe your dad. Yeah, so somebody will buy the debt, but they won't issue the car. He's on your side or going to exist. Anything they owe you is gone. You got admission. I want to thank you for being on the program really appreciated. Miss Shed lock. Metaflow: Netflix Machine Learning Platform with Savin Goyal
"Brings us to aws flicks took the at the time unconventional decision to go all in on aws many years ago at this point, and that's treated. Netflix's really well, because it's almost, it's almost like. The the whole idea around blessed programming languages where you make a strong decision within an organization to restrict the number of programming languages with an organization and it it that constraint ends up helping the organization make decisions more quickly and allow for engineering mobility and so on. This is the case. This has been the case with aws when when Netflix? Strongly moved onto aws and continue to do that. That extends to medfly show. A better flow is an open source framework, but it has a tight coupling with aws. So why is the tight coupling to aws useful for machine learning framework? Sue I won't say that. We are tightly coupled to eight of us. So when leave it open sourcing MEDOFF. No at that point in time, because we had a good amount of operational expertise with aws, we chose indicating the details are ready for this cloud integration, but the architecture of Meta flow. Is Very much vendor agnostic, so the already have people who have ported Netflix will on top of Google cloud for example. So see I wanNA. Make sure that at the end of the day. The end user are data scientists decent to worry about any of the concerns that are introduced by using it us, Rg are. Is You're in the? Cloud windows to them. They're just writing code in an idiomatic language whether it's Biton are are, and the metaphor takes care of actually understanding the code and orchestrating that on top of the AWS RG CPU or any of the other. Providers. So so yet, so that's that's a strategy that we have been falling. We started views because that's what the US internally ethnic flex. That's what we have worst amount of experience and expertise in, but. There are people who have made it. Look at JCP, and going forward as well. It's something that's on our road, not to have a more and more indications. Appointed comparison to Meta flow might be airflow the distributed workflow scheduling system that's often used for data engineering jobs. How does medfly compare to airflow? So air is what you would come as production creates getting her in the sense that you have your email pipeline, and now you want your pipeline to run autonomously, say and all. At the stroke of Midnight Day are win some. Deed is available. That pipeline should be triggered so once once you've. Created your etl pipeline, and you're happy with how it's running at that point in time it makes sense to ported to an ear flu, or see it functions Louici for example. But. What is severely lacking in some of these two? Is the local expedients to on my laptop. I WANNA. Make sure that my workflow runs both Akil, and then I should be able to deploy it and that sort of what we can. Refer to as a traditional using this workflow on top of. Airflow audited list of functions so now met up. You has this notion of a dag and bundles in a local scheduler so menu writing your Code Medoff on your laptop at that point in time, medoff Lewis local killer may be responsible for executing your code, executing the nodes of the DAG, and you can mix and match. You can certainly talk the Dag run on your laptop to notice run. Run on the cloud with specific resources that you have already specified, and then once you're happy with the injury execution off your workflow than at that point in time, metaphor allows you to compile your dad into a specification that one of these production understand so as a matter of fact in early July, we are going to release our integration, but it of just approaches, which is production skater. Available in eight of us and you can take your workflow and this one commingling argument you can deploy on of aws. Step functions now step functions like some of the. Nice things about it is, it's a highly available Dag Scheduler, and it allows Florida running workflows, which can span a year as will end. The operation footprint is really monitoring, so you get like really nice quantities when Saginaw you're running on one of these stretching rates, lives and internally at net flicks. We chose to build one. Ourselves Sets Meson and Dorado. Bunch of talks online on specific infrastructure as well as the architecture needs on that front. and. Our internal users what they do is they invite Medoff workflow in this bag, and then just one single come online argument. They're able to export that as a means on woke view and this me, saen executor's slash schooler has a good amount of fetuses it around see how do unloading how to trigger events and other wilco finish resume. Your will close. You can sit a variety of triggers based on time the on what so you get like. All those nice features it when you're on top of one of these production rates get loose, and then you also get all the lineage tracking, and the deduc would and environments not shutting using Medicare. And do our end. Users now don't really have to consume themselves with a standing the programming model that means on provides our understanding the program model that Ilias Conscience provides. They just ride their coordinate in then metaphor takes care of interfacing in your of these productions units so now coming back to the question that you had around comparing metal fluid airflow I would say that these are ready to talking to products, and they're not competing against one another on the country they are. Supposed to work well with one another, so the situation would be back. You use metaphor your local prototyping, and once you're happy with the results then at that point in tiny convincingly just export of workflow onto their.

"A welcome to flint. My hometown. Sure isn't the mythical mayberry. Unlike mayberry. Flynn is concrete jungle. It's one of the most crime ridden cities in all of America. Has Been a broken city for a long long time. A deputy sheriff in Flint is more likely found chatting with a child, molester or murderer than mayberry's Barney fife. Who spent his time talking with drunks and perhaps littering suspect incited county jail cell. Flint is the major leagues of crimefighting. Far As cities go. Flint is to crime. What Green Bay is to the National Football League. For several decades flint was at the top or was in the top ten of the nation cities over one hundred thousand people and many crime categories. It led. It has been a national leader in such crimes as homicide sexual assault arson in flint, infant mortality ranks near the top of not just American cities, but also in the entire world it also has a high incidence of certain types of throat and lung cancers with the suspected link, being GM's chemical plating operations and factory air pollution General Motors Left Flint with the legacy of environmental degradation, which has required millions of dollars to remediate and there is more to be done. In a town without fully safe water supply. Just so you get a better picture of my hometown today it has one of the worst educated populations in America, tens of thousands of uneducated unskilled people. In some of the most horrific poverty and schools and arguably the greatest nation on earth. It, has income levels near the bottom of American cities of any size. It has become a place where nearly all hope has vanished a place where America has mostly forgotten. My hometown is at the epicenter of American carnage, largely the result of globalization and incompetent government. It? It was once a great American city. It has fallen completely off the radar screen. It is now a forgotten city with a poison water supply, eye-popping crime rates in an economy trashed by the march of industrial and high-tech globalization. Not long ago, the city caught a serious break losing so much population that it's not a city under a hundred thousand any longer. Because of that the score keepers of crime kicked us out of the major leagues of crime cities. We no longer get all the analytics. And had nothing to do with the fact, the city is fewer violent crimes. In fact, it could be seen as a place where crime is even worse because the population is smaller with the exact same crime problems. It is one of the top cities in the country. For one way you hall business, one way out of town, according to the Flint Area Chamber of Commerce in the past ten years, since the great recession of two thousand and eighteen, the flint area has had reached another seventeen thousand jobs. It's used unemployment rates the highest in all communities in Southeast Michigan and that includes Detroit cynically the people of Flint don't need the FBI or the Detroit News to tell them that flint is not a very safe place to live. You can measure the safety of most places like Flynn by how many people take drive around town packing guns after dark. If you are brave and stupid enough, you could take a spin about Flynn at night. You may be disappointed to find that beside yourself. There are just a few other suspicious looking cars on the road cars with gangsters driving slumped in the driver's seat Bong wrapping blaring out the windows. Raveling your teeth, it might be. Might seem that this is a gangster paradise. Believe me when I say you are really not in paradise. You are live in a living hell before long you might be walking home without your car and without your wallet, you and your soccer, mom. Chevrolet Tahoe or GONNA look reality. Right in the face. Another thing that's really knots about Flynn, crime rakings is their company publicity, the city fathers and mother's view. The publicity is the cause and not the effect of the high crime rate. By analogy say you are selling your house in Flint. You don't advertise buying a really nice houses in shitty place. No one not even zillow advertises. Track crime statistics along with the dimensions your house. As an aside, zillow does advertise whether or not your house is in a shitting school district. Point is if you know your neighborhood is full of convicted sexual predators. You are not going to live there. In the nineteen nineties we were in the midst of the crack cocaine epidemic. It's not any less of an epidemic thirty years later. opioids, the latest menace were not sold as often on the street corners in bad neighborhoods. OPIOID addiction including heroin involves not just black people, but white people to. The US it's a bit tidier to create a public health problem out of its emergence that may not be such a bad thing. Either suburban mom gets her doctor to give prescription pain pills and goes to walgreens and picks up the dope. That makes sense. It's much more appealing to a suburban houses to feed her habit. There are no armed street corner people from whom to make a drug purchase. No scary dote dope houses to find Walgreens, CVS and Walmart. It's as easy as getting milk and bread. Pain pill addiction is not a new thing to flint or the mid Western working class in the nineteen seventies, downers were prevalent and popular. These drugs included opiates, barbiturates, Benzodiazepines antihistamines remember Valley of the dolls. That book sold thirty one million copies across the world. And important lesson to learn from all this banter is that in order to solve the problem in your city I must acknowledge there is an opioid problem. It is highly likely. that. It has other drugs that are just as bad and likely worse. We all learned from something about accepting responsibility from alcoholics anonymous. And, that's what makes a approach so effective in that alcohol has a podcast to admit a problem before at a meeting before he can. Get help. And he asked to do so often in front of God in his family as friends, and then hopefully, there's some change. But if you deny this serious problems, you'll never seek a solution. So how how did I end up here? I was never supposed to be what I became an America and Flint for that matter I did have some advantages. I had an unenvious vantage point of an American city in crisis. It was the city coming unraveled in every imaginable way I was surrounded by traumatic events during my life and flint. It was unraveling, only imagined by script writers for a movie. Economic, collapse public health problems crime. Drugs crack cocaine methamphetamine. All this change the trajectory of my life..

"Affiliate one hundred point nine FM in Midland based city in Saginaw Matt devries Blake throwing a bread Tunney had a chance to talk about what would've been their home opener tonight for the loons the Dodgers class AA farm affiliate at dell diamond thanks bill yeah like you said the unfortunate that we don't have baseball here in Midland this year Lansing or grand rapids or Detroit for that matter but nonetheless we're trying to celebrate the best we can up here in the Great Lakes bay region fans have been sharing photos all day other videos were getting messages from from other folks as well just trying to reminisce about what opening day at the ballpark really truly feels like and and unfortunately Brad we're we're not gonna have it this year even though we can want it as bad as we want it's not going to under which yeah it was tough initially when we were all at the office I think our last day as a group there was that Friday the thirteenth there were I guess coincidentally enough those are last in the office and just kind of thinking about that possibility and then as the weeks of going on obviously knowing that we were gonna have an opening day and then not having a home opening day and I'm not probably playing any games in April or may and the idea that we may not play any games at all hours of the palette when this is all the people that work in baseball no for five and six months of the year is showing up the ball park every day and for me traveling with the team every day and just not being around anything else so it's just weird we're not being able to enjoy the sun yet I mean we had snow and hail here in Midland like two days ago but gonna be weird if you come middle may when it's actually sunny and the weather is nice just sitting outside and like not having a ball game to go to or not being on the road with the team I don't know if that's fully hit me yet yeah and and like I mean last year was your first real opening day in minor league baseball being with alone so I'm I'm sure you know year to getting ready and gearing up your knee deep in basketball went when the quarantine at so you maybe weren't thinking baseball just yet but now you know that we missed the masters in way and usually that leads right into it to baseball season and I'm sure you know anticipation for you was was just as high as your one absolutely I mean even when we're not in baseball season it seems like it's always at the back of our minds like the whole year our whole lives are planned around baseball during the season in the offseason in preparation for the next year looking back on the season that just was it's all baseball on our minds three sixty five and then finally get here and not have that constant every day of the baseball game either in Midland or somewhere else it just feels kind of Yuri and and especially the fact that we have no control over it whatsoever we don't know when or if it'll come back anytime soon and I think that's the most frustrating part for me if I knew Hey we have a one month delay and we're back at this day guaranteed I think it be easier for everybody for all sports but just the uncertainty of what's coming ahead is is the most frustrating and worrisome part for me and I think at the end of this we were finally able to play baseball again and get back to other sports we're gonna really appreciate them more than we ever have and I think we're gonna find out we took a lot of this for granted especially baseball season a hundred fourty teams in our minor league season we kind of get lost in the day today but I think when we come back and have a new appreciation for all of it I think we're gonna have a new appreciation for everything as in like maybe just seeing people in person and being able to have barbecues in the backyard and being able to have a beer on the patio Brad seems kind of the MTV even trying to talk about what what balloons might have looked like this year and I think it really just boils down to what we're at the mercy of major and minor league baseball as to when we might even be able to gather again as as fast and and even remotely think about playing baseball and I think it's more that there is the bigger issue at hand of just trying to make sure everyone stays safe yeah and from our perspective I mean we were we were excited to receive as always a great crop of talent from the Dodgers I know a lot of their talent we saw last year and on the upper reaches of the system but it feels like we say that every year where the Dodgers farm system is top heavy at all lives in double triple a or in the major leagues but every year they replenish in a way that most organizations don't from so from our perspective even though it may feel like you know in early March when we start to gauge who's gonna be on the team it may not be as good this year the talent level may not be as good it seemingly always develops into something that loons fans can appreciate I think loons fans in particular I mean work we're a smaller community even compared to most in minor league baseball and even compared to most in single A. baseball this is a smaller town compared to even the towns in our state that have minor league baseball in Lansing and grand rapids and I know those cities love their minor league baseball but there's a special bond between Midland in particular plus the surrounding communities to learn baseball as a as a piece of comfort almost this time of year and we saw that with our best season ticket holder event that I think the teams ever had going into a year that we had up in the reserve the suite level in early March late February whenever that was and I was excited I think fans were excited we fed off of that excitement early on for ticket pick up day and not be handing out right now it's disappointing but you know I'm looking back through photos today to celebrate what would have been the home opening day MLB at home opener and a lot of photos that I'm coming up on in we'll be posting today have you know have other people in the matches myself for Blake or when I used to broadcast games of Chris it's more so when I had my parents up and they were smiling when I've got the dogs at the ballpark and they're smiling when my girlfriend's parents are at the ballpark and when I'm with fans that are smiling and things like that those are that's what I'm gonna start to miss during the middle of the summer so that's really what the latest is up here with the Great Lakes loons should've had our home opener today we were to open the season last week in Dane and should have had the west Michigan Whitecaps in town tonight to start a four game series obviously that's not gonna happen.

"But it's about the speed things freezes that make sense. It does look on being. Now back in the day. When I was in Saginaw, Flint Michigan, mentally was a television news reporter extraordinaire won a lot of awards. But I was also eventually was the main anchor w channel twenty five in Saginaw, actually, inquire Michigan and. I did. Inbetween? I did a little bit of weather. And what I would do is kind of a song and dance at the green screen, and I would hold my hand up. Like, this is Michigan our point of Flint, I would point to to to Saginaw, and I would call it the battle of the cities. And then we would see who either have a higher or lower temperature that day. Oh, yes. That's what I did. Extrordinary? Yes. Cast. You would watch is what it sounds like what it sounds like there's award-winning. Yes. So I I I actually believe that my colleague Ashley Giles, actually, I think she actually called it the song and dance weather one nine. That's that's what I would do because I'm that guy. This is called. But I did also really want to learn about it. And I'm pretty sure that's how they figure out the wind chill. It's the speed at which I believe water will freeze and again water will freeze at thirty two. But if the wind chill is zero and the actual temperature is thirty two it just will freeze a lot faster, but if ever going to get to zero it's never really that temperature is just the effect. And I guess it also would be the effect on human skin. How fast colds and all that? So yeah, you gotta be very careful no matter whether it's real temperature or or wind chill, you gotta be unbelievably careful because for Indiana city. Forecasts were even telling people are warning them to minimize talking outdoors. If you have to go outdoors, don't talk and don't take really deep breaths either. Wow. Yeah. Imagine if we did the show outdoors the show would be like crickets. How did you see that the Noblesville police department at Indiana actually made a proclamation about the cold weather? Oh about the crime. I heard about that attention attention attention as a tweet or a Facebook message. They sent out. Due to the extreme cold temperatures for the next few days and in an effort to keep citizens and officers out of the elements as much as possible. All crime and illegal activities in Noblesville surrounding areas will be prohibited until further notice if you failed to comply with this notice. There's a possibility of a fine or even jail time. He wanted to get this information out to the public as quickly as possible. So we're utilizing social media. Hey, do not receive your formal notice you cannot participate in any criminal endeavors. I think you've got it. Look, you gotta be created people will attack this police department. How do you tell people they just have to stop crying now?
