"And but he goes and he's sometimes like, I have a statue of Rex libris, that the comic, I love this thing so bad. The comic book was the first gift. You know the first one's free because that's how they get you. But it is a small statue of like Rex lieber's holding a book with his gun and he's standing on a monster hand. And it is some amazing art, but if you get a chance to read Rex Liberace, I would recommend that I'm going to write that down because I am a sucker for superhero librarians basically. Right. And so that's what the Kerrigan. Sounds like a little bit to me. So yeah, tell me about that. Exactly. Okay, so this one, so I read a news article a while ago about a gorilla librarian, that's like GUE ri. You can do phone booths in New York and just use phone booths and turn them into little libraries. And so for a while I thought like gorilla librarian was a good title, but then I thought, okay, well, maybe kids will think it's a gorilla, which is a different search, which would be also a good story. An amazing story there. What's happening there? Yeah. Yeah. I said, okay, secret librarian. And then for like a year, I would walk around going to myself like Bobby ferritin secret life? No. Janet Jarrett, and then one day I thought, lyric mccarrick and secretary, and it's like, something's like, that's a title. I just sat down and wrote the book. So I think my subconscious is writing a book. But it's like, we're not moving anything till you have the right name. Right. But being a fan of, yeah, yeah. It'll all come together. That's awesome. So lyric mccarrick is the Scottish. She, so she oh, there it goes. Yeah. So we don't really, we don't go into her backstory too much. Whether the other thing that's sort of interesting is when I wrote the book, so I pictured her the librarians I grew up with, who are these lovely elderly ladies, and you can see she is not unearthly lady. Do you remember it? It's a wonderful life. The worst case scenario was his wife turns into a librarian. And I was like, no, that sounds kind of awesome. Which she's not a Carpenter and raising three kids by herself. What's happening? Okay, so four kids. So yeah, so a young, a young library, though I do enjoy the glasses. And so she is wearing glasses and she's got purple hair and a scarf. It's actually sort of interesting. So the artist has drawn her a little bit ambiguous like she could actually be a kid, right? She could be like a young grown-up or like just a kid who's like very Anne. Which I think is sort of interesting. There's sort of an idea in picture books that kids don't want to read about grown-ups, which I don't think is at all true. But most picture of a character is on that assumption, our kids. What's the name of the artist? And if you know comic books, you may know her. She got an eisner award for. Anya's ghost. I think it's the name of the book. I think I did. Yeah. Anyway, it's a great spell. Last name? There we go, brasco. Yeah. And she does a lot of comic books. And so she took a very comic booky style with this, which works great for like a superhero librarian. Yeah, yeah. So yeah, yeah, let's see some of the art and hear some of the story. That's great. Lyric mccarrick and secret librarian, written by Jacob sager Weinstein, illustrated by Vera brasco. And again, here's another one of those little splash pages. Yeah. Yeah,.

"Me the process. Yeah. Okay. But I promise we'll talk about it, but I just want to say that one of the great things about art museum picture books is you know that they care about the art. You know they're going to be printed beautifully. It's going to be like the absolute artist's vision reproduced on the page. And that's fantastic. Yeah, yeah. That is awesome. Okay. Who did the art on Judith cares, by the way? Before I forget. She was a writer artist. Holy smokes. She survived the Holocaust. And was a writer. Yeah, yeah. Fuck the nonsense. She was great. Okay. Again with the swearing. So okay, so but in context. So there we go. I think that's okay, yeah. Nazis. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, you guys, don't break people. People, there's a lot of talent out there. So anyway, so go ahead. Go for it. Okay, so princess unlimited by Sheik of the savior Weinstein. Actually, I don't say written by Jacob sager Weinstein, because one of my pet peeves is when people say a book is by the writer because it's by the writer and the artist. It is very glad. Yes, very much so, especially with this kind of book, yeah. Exactly. So princess unlimited written by Jacob sigurdsson, those treated by raisa figueroa. All right. Oh, and so there's often picture books. There's like the little frontispiece. I don't know the technical term for it. A little dedication, copyright page, it sets the tone. So you describe what you're seeing on this one before the story even starts. It looks spooky. Do you know what? There might be like sword and sorcery. It's a princess unlimited. So we're in sort of a, I would say a foggy more or a foggy kind of landscape. And there's a castle and there's a lightbulb. And yeah, let's get into it. It looks like it could be. But it could be a good year. Let's find out. Okay, princess Susan lived in a castle high atop a hill in a room's fill. Sorry, in a room filled with sparkles and frilly dresses. So tell us what you see. Okay, so she's in a room that is pink. It's got some pinky stuff going on. There's a little bit of a, what's the circle?.

"There were chapter books that had art. And then there were books that were like a is for aardvark. And then a picture of an aardvark, right? Yes. Yeah, I mean, I think you've always been beautifully done picture books. But I think that it's gotten better and better as time goes on. And I think there's a few reasons for that. I think that partly the people who grew up liking the good picture books get inspired to make good ones themselves. Right. Yeah. So what do you remember from you? Like when you first started reading them to your kids, did you grab the ones from your childhood or did you just grab? Whatever was at the bookstore. Okay, so it's a little of both. And by the way, this is one of the ways it's a hard business because I'm not just competing with whoever publishes a book this year. I'm competing with everything Dr. Seuss ever wrote for 40 years. Right. Right. Oh yeah, doctor scuse that asshole. And doctor. That guy got a corner of the market that him and his rhyming egg talk. Okay. So what? And I'd be like, look, who do you want to read? Dr. Seuss, or Jacob sager Weinstein. Truly, it's a tough competition. Right. I mean, it helps because there's also ones where you can put your kids name into them. They're like, choose your own adventure. Those ones? Yeah. And then there's a whole other genre of pop up books, yes. So yeah. And some of those are like the paper engineering in those and sometimes amazing. I can actually stop talking for a second and let you wax it up because I have too many questions. So please tell me about the map of books that you love. Or the picture books. How the ones that you started with and how it's coming. Let's hear it. Okay, sorry..

"There's an merch. There's stand up. There's tour guide, you know, you can find out where I'm touring. This is getting long. So let's get into the show. Hey, Jackie. I'm in the garage. My garage, you guys. And it's another great episode of the door for us. But this time, it's with Jacob sager. Is it sager? It's sager Weinstein. It's the world. We're just going to pronounce. Yes. Well, your name is Jacob Weinstein. You better put something in the middle of it. Otherwise, you and like 9 guys are going to be fighting over a Twitter handle. So. Exactly. I have a buddy named Josh Weinstein who had to put Elvis in the middle of his name for sag. First street actors guild for the Writers Guild or some damn thing. So Jacob sager Weinstein is at Jacob SW on Twitter and you write children's books and other people draw them, but you write children's books, picture books, and you also enjoy them. So that is your doctor, and I'm all for it. But yours is called princess unlimited. And then you have another one called lyric mccarrick, right? Exactly right. Yep. Those are the two so far. Do so far. Well, welcome to the program. Jacob Sanger Weinstein. How are you? I'm fine. I am delighted to be here. There we go. Let us let us work out. I love picture books quite obviously. I say that they're for children, but are they? Remember that go the fuck to sleep book? Remember that? That was a picture book. And that had the F word in it. So how will we know? How will we know? Yeah, it's true. I mean, so some of the people talk about picture books as a genre, but really they're a medium, right? It's like, and there's like film. You can have films for grown ups, you can have films for kids, you can have cowboy films, musical films. It's the same way. Same way..

"And so. I think that that's where i want to start. Let's look at that. Because i think those are two very practical examples for people listening like remembering the that we read and you know even remember anything that we hear. Yeah okay so so. I would say that the so in the book talk about what i call the rules of memory and the first rule of memory is the easiest way to remember. Something is to remember something easy. And i know that sounds tautological but most memory tricks are ways of converting. Something that's hard. That's a number a date something abstract into something that we more naturally. A member The most common of those checks luckily the the one that everybody knows that the monarch trick that everyone knows so well that we forget. It's in the mont trick. Is the alphabet song right. 'cause because when you're a kid and you have to learn twenty-six arbitrary names for twenty six arbitrary squiggle in a totally arbitrary order. That's a really hard thing to remember. Songs tunes melodies. Those are easier things to remember because they have their own. Inner logic that we intuitively get so we convert this hard thing to remember these names for these wiggles into something easy. Which is this melody so A lot of memory tricks are you so so a lot of new monarchs. Our rhymes songs things like that. Now when you're reading a book you probably are not going to want to make a song for every single thing you eat. So so what. I what i find. Useful are chew techniques that i used to remember things like books are facts from books. The most famous is the mind palace or the memory palace or the method of loci. If you want a fancy name and that's because something that people tend to remember very easily is locations so you picture a place that you know well and you imagine the things you want to remember interacting with different locations in that and then when you imagine yourself back in that place you naturally imagine the sort of crazy visual interactions that you've imagined and and so if you're.

"Help. Yeah it's it's interesting to like even think about anything that creative from the standpoint of setting a machine but as you probably know for my own work like i'm an obsessive person when it comes to building systems for how we get things done. I mean at this point. We refined the system so much literally technology agent engineer. The other day said. I haven't talked to you in like two and a half weeks and yet it's all running like clockwork. Yeah absolutely and by. I was on the show for six years and it had been on for a couple of years before then and by the end of that it was exactly that kind of process where we had tuesdays where the day that the writers would vote on the monologue jokes and send a certain abrupt dentis wednesdays. We'd work on the ranch. Which was his monologue on a certain topic and it was very. It was like working in a factory. Were certain days you had output of a certain kind that been went through a certain process to get that widget at the end which was a show. Yeah well. I think that that actually makes a perfect segue to talking about this whole idea of memory but first before have the memory thing how in the world you make the transition from dennis miller children's books So okay so actually. There's there's less of a difference than you'd think. And the reason is this that one of the the big lessons. I learned when the big skills i picked up from. Dennis was writing for a different voice than mine like dennis. You probably can tell just talking to me. He's a very different person than me And so the. What i had to learn was how to sort of see things. From his point of view he was every time ultimately. We were writing the tv audience. But we were all kind of the audience. We're writing for initially. So i was thinking about the ven diagram of what are the things he finds..

"You know so on the one hand you have a parent who fled the nazis another. Who was an immigrant but immigrant. That have been here long enough. That like almost to the point. Where in my mind you know. I don't see that the immigrant per se. But i wonder because you're jewish right just based on your last name. Did you grow up with the sort of typical jewish kid narrative that indian kids do. I mean you went to princeton. for god's sakes like and then you decide to go have a creative career. So i wonder what your parents told you about making your way in the world you know particularly based on your background. Yeah it's really interesting so there is definitely that thing of of you know. I did not come to america so that you could could be unemployed in a garret somewhere but my parents were amazingly free of that and my mom would sometimes quote something and i. I don't know where she got it from. But it was. The effect of our parents were were peddlers so that we could be doctors and lawyers and we are doctors and lawyers so that our children can be artists and writers. And i as i got older and talk to friends who had been parents similar backgrounds. I came to realize that is a fairly unusual and open minded attitude. But my parents were always the attitude that that they wanted us to find life meaningful and satisfying. I think maybe the one advantage. I had coming from sort of a jewish background. And you have to tell me if the indian background is the same but but in judaism a couple of things that are culturally important. Writing is incredibly important literacy is important so wanting to be a writer is a fairly prestigious thing and i- humor is such an important part of the jewish culture that that going into comedy or going into some sort of comedy. "All right, welcome back to the show Riley Sager author of home before dark. Welcome back! There thank you for having me. Yes. We are at the world to have you back we. Love talking to you and your work is so much fun and you are type of person. The Horror Disney hybrid, the the rare breed. It's such like people don't think those two things are compatible, but I think they're very compatible and a cat. Explain why, but there seem to be quite a few of us out there. Who Love like you know both scream at frozen. That's like you don't need to choose. You can love them both absolutely I. Don't know I feel like we're leading some sort of a revolution for for more us to come forth. Yes come out, it's fine, we all you can. You can like Freddy and Jason and Elsa. We are weird and we accept you. While so any way, this is very exciting that you're joining us because you are promoting as Scott, said your new book home before dark, and we aren't going to try to keep this interview spoiler free if we possibly can so that people have a little bit of teaser before they haven't quite finished the book yet. Please okay so I'M GONNA to kick it off because something that was really really on my mind during this in the last novel in a lot of your books, the building or the home is a character. Can you tell us how architecture inspires your work? I think it starts from the fact that I grew up in the most boring house on the planet like. No offense to my parents and the house they still live in. It just was. It was a ranch house with white siding and really nothing interesting about it. And, so as a kid I just wanted stairs. Like having a second floor was like this big. Oh my gosh, the second floor! HOW COOL EXOTIC! So really was so I think a lot of this obsession with like architecture and real estate stems from that I just grew up in his boring white box, and all my life long for something more than that so. I love old buildings I love old houses. I love the history behind these places and I think that definitely comes out sometimes in the things I write about. was that was that Ranch House haunted? It was not there were some mice in the attic. Though that I would hear Gretna night scratching around over my bed. That's creepy. You really can sound like footsteps. Sometimes, they're scary. It was it was something like that I. Didn't think it was weird at the time. Because when you're a kid, you know what's weird like this is your world and so I didn't realize it till later. Like. Hey, maybe it was weird. Go to sleep, listening select little pitter-patter of mice feet over. Are you like like an HDTV person as well. Our lead character in this book is a Renovation River reservationists i. don't know what you would say. She does homes. She i. She's she flips. It really was part of that because like I came up with the idea for the book, and in completely like coincidental timeline, as I was writing the book, my husband and I decided..

"It with the Sager see what we know so far on the show tonight what's going on to say well instead of not watching the Korean baseball and cable tonight have you noticed that FS one is now carrying Australian rules football I want you to right now I'm I'm not sure how it's played but I'm I'm watching right now you know it is in the second half at north Melbourne on a sunny Sunday afternoon it is live and the season in mid March was cut right after they'd started week one so I think this is literally only the second or third game per team they just restarted this week but FS one does have forty as they call it down under and meanwhile ESPN had the UFC fight night again at their production facility at the offices in Vegas I said it last week on the show I'll say it again I in no way say anything bad about American company trying to get something on TV especially this year makes the money go for it and even match ups that don't look good on paper can wind up being entertaining but man they are really plowing through card after card here the U. S. seed no matter what they can throw on the screen tonight the main event the number one contender involved Jessica hi with a record of now fifteen and eight after losing a unanimous decision to Cynthia Calvi and it was she who was one of the three fighters who missed weight yesterday social lose part of her prize money so proudly knife fight they can ask may well stay tuned I was kind of sounds like it sounds like the Arnie Spanier of MMA like no one's quite sure how she gets the air time kind of like RT would be eight and fifteen just the opposite it's you know I don't know they're not gonna get good ratings but congratulations you have something there because as is plain as day to everybody it's just the S. P. N. has just gone in the tank with ratings the last three weeks because unlike sports radio which can thrive in this without live games ESPN without live events and then the programming around that the programming around that has suffered badly example Wednesday night you had NASCAR with a rare Wednesday night Cup series race from Martinsville on FS one ESPN picked up the MLB draft first round the NASCAR on FS one got one point seven million and I baseball got four hundred thirty thousand on ESPN why and that rating of four hundred thirty thousand viewers was actually ESPN's largest audience for any week day program in the last three weeks compare that to like the ratings and that's like NBA or NFL draft it's not a it's crazy it's a lower rating than the NBA finals replace that ABC was giving on weekends before it's like a third of the replays of the Jordan documentary that ABC has been doing its best they are tanking badly forget the whole cord cutting which was already a problem for cable channels this is they can't wait for games to return you got anything is it life will put it on Saturday morning they had people weight lifting logs and my pick up basketball game yeah anyway then we had the baseball news tonight's which of course is tonight right before your show that it breaks but they've in the union has ended negotiations for this season and as our canned Rosenthal said in the athletic now both sides could be filing a grievance in the event no agreement is reached and we're not expecting an agreement it wouldn't impede play of course MLB could still just implemented short season and we'll have games in twenty twenty but he writes that the unions likely a grievance would suggest well baseball didn't make best effort to play as many games as possible this year and then the league would suggest well the union didn't engage in good faith negotiations about the economics of this board if game right laid without fans it was tonight and one of the letters from the union people that said to and of course it was long but among the things that it said you cannot seriously contend that that agreement from back in March to discuss the economic feasibility of games without fans in any way means that we agree to further pay cuts for games without fans I one thing I would say and both sides are in the wrong and this is just ridiculous but one thing against the players union they keep saying further pay cuts like they've done a whole lot already they actually are acting like Brady Quinn actually brought this up a former football union member the hot spot of actually feeling on that just because they're say half a season's worth of games and get what you only get half your salary they consider like wow okay so that's one concession we gave you I would say that all right what are your what planet are you living in in the year twenty twenty that you don't get a Pat on the back for that if there were games tomorrow in baseball I would try and find a way to show up just so I could do both sides now I'm sure all of this with fans it will calm down by the time first week of August rolls around and there are games because you'll be coming down first week of August there probably won't be teams for games but ridiculous on both sides I said the same thing all right the Sager thank you very much two hours in the books the.

"Jessica Sager who helped create the hardwood community garden in Austin Texas Aliceville there's two points are going to pull out one is the importance of connectedness in communities after tragedy or trauma and number two the buyouts of the government coming in and is buying lands as we can see more that where's the money going to come from well you're absolutely right on the first issue of social connectedness that is one of the things that we noticed we know when most makes communities resilience is social connectivity this is really on display when you have extreme heat events which we were experiencing already and we will experience more of when you look at the excess deaths the people who died as a result of suffering to an extreme heat events we know that those who are connected to their community or less much less likely to die so socially isolated people living alone the elderly who die or those communities that don't have the kind of opportunity to share together as we just heard about the question on the buyouts is going to be a very difficult one for the nation all right now these buyouts are often largely funded through federal taxpayer dollars and they are done on a voluntary basis so for example in New Jersey after sandy they had the blue acres problem and when you have flu acres program but it did turn into a problem Chris Christie had promised that he was just going to take care of all that land get rid of the homes that have flooded and and open green space well if you have a voluntary program there are a lot of people don't want to move on and that's understandable there's emotional attachment to your house may be reached your family you've been there forever you hear people are going to do I'm going to go out feet first on so they don't want to sell so it sometimes you can't get even that little open space you just have a patchwork and then the town still has to maintain the infrastructure so that if if not everybody moves that's a problem and then we have simply the demand is too great you know before.

"Did you know I didn't know any of this stuff at all. I really thought. Oh you know Dean Sager Normal Normal Childhood. Yeah yeah normal life and here. I am learning more about you today at something incredible. So then I'm thinking about maybe your college college years you come to college your friends say Oh. I'm going to go home for the weekend and everybody's like aren't you going to go home John and you're like well. Aw I don't know if I'd rather go what was like Thanksgiving and Christmas. What was that like for you thanksgiving? Luckily I had some really good friends And so I spent some time. Some of the brakes with them I worked a lot. I stayed at the time the The dorm did not close down at Christmas. Time like it does now so I worked thanksgiving. I Work Christmas. I put in back back then. You could put in twelve hour days. I worked the night shift has a student. Yeah our ASS. Yeah and so I would work the whole night shift and then Oh I forgot how many hours I did one Christmas. It was a bunch but I would work breaks and the summers as well I would either do camp or work work here and And I would get invited but I needed to make money. I felt early on that there. It wasn't there was support back home but I didn't feel like I wanted that support. Sure I wanted. I wanted my own thing I wanted to do it. It on my own and so that entailed a lot of extra work to get that money and stuff. So wow so. It's almost like you were Kinda itself raising a lot of different ways in the books that you read probably helped to raise you. I would say so I would. I would say early on in my life. The books more companion now. I'm a bit more Choosey Z.. As far as trying to edify myself to better myself So I include those books now but early audit was more Story Three And that kind of got me through without being so lonely High School I I was at home but when we we moved to Florida when I got into the eighth grade and I turned fourteen pretty soon after and as soon as I turn fourteen I went to work not because my parents asked me to but I wanted it was too quiet at the house is very quiet place place and I had not connected with them so I went to work at a hospital nearby so I went to school. I liked school not so much the classes. Although there are a few that I loved but I like the fact spend hours out independent with friends and The same with work work at work. There is a couple of cooks there and I worked in the cafeteria in hospital and and They would bring. I remember one WanNa because brought this big fish one day that he had just caught and he was making it in this pan when there was time and and it was whole and the had the I N had Yeah I mean he had cleaned it but it was. It was whole and he made that and he made it beautifully ceautiful. I remember it tasted so good. Share that with May so those were little type families to me. So where were you went. You had a bit of a community community yes home yes and I think at that time it was sure I had my friends but friends are your friends but you need that older kind of mentorship a little bit. And that's what took place at that hospital. They they took me under their wings and shared stuff with me. So yeah I mean where you don't get something in someplace if you're open to it you're gonNA find it in another place. I I think. That's actually a powerful lesson because it's easy for people like me to sit back and be like well. I didn't have a father growing up so that means I am forever. I'm a failure for forever right and instead I feel like even when I haven't meant to each place that I go I might look at that older male who might be similar to me it starts sharing start going back and forth with each other that kind of thing and I even realized. What a blessing that is? I mean it's it's terrible not not to have a a mother and father in the typical sense of the word who love you and know how to love you But I tell you the way it has opened the fact that all of that happen has opened up many relationships that I don't think I would ever sought out in my life now and and In some ways my life is richer because of it in other ways like trying to rectify that it has been harder but as as far as meeting people and finding mentors outside of the home. He had that wouldn't have happened. Otherwise so you mentioned your Uncle Jack who of course we we now is your your actual father. He didn't reveal himself until adulthood. It was I think I was maybe Etienne the third grade where he that was revealed to me in my he and my mom Actually got married at at that time so that was why it was revealed to me again. Very confusing I was still only nine years old. It was it's very confusing And I didn't really except I like okay. Here's the fact but yeah you're not my dad type I say how And so it was very. It was very internal childhood within the home. It was very internal like I was in my room. I was in my books. I was daydreaming in the backyard But I wasn't interacting interacting with my with my parents Outside of it outside of the house Probe I was a quieter guy but I wanted to interact which was kinda surprising in a way. When you think about it you would think could be a kind of closed off everywhere but For me personally I was. I was open to relationships outside of the home but not always real good at them. That's the thing because of that. I wanted them but because I wasn't really shown or given a lot of that except very early on I wasn't necessarily great at relationships and that manifest it more is self more as I got older because of course relationships get more complex. That's extremely interesting. It's almost as if you had wanted. You did want a relationship with people around you that the same time. It was so hard for you to maybe open up to other people everyday people. I'm sure we're always laughing and smiling around you. You wanted to be a part of that yes you were just like. I got some heavy stuff even when you're a child you don't think I have heavy stuff you're just like I'm not feeling up to it. Yeah and that's very astute of you. It was in those moments where you're around friends that they're laughing and cutting up and one person is maybe super gregarious. That's when it was difficult it wasn't it wasn't a quieter moments or whatever because you know you all those insecurities insecurities come out in those in those ties. Because you like me. I I need to be part of this. I need to be part of what makes other people laugh. And yet that wasn't coming coming natural so yes very astute sometimes when there's laughter all around you it can be a little bit scary for you really really really jarring. I'm sure I'm just imagining you being in just fourth grade third fourth grade and everybody's laughing around you and you're sitting there too this little quiet thinking. Wow people are able to joke around and beat her free right and say you know when I go home to mom and dad. I'm getting ice cream at because I got an aide today in class. Right right right. Wow Yeah instead you went home and it was like I got an Ale my spelling test today. You say to yourself in Game Room. Yeah Yeah it was. Ah quiet time at home. My parents worked at night. That was part of it as well. so during the day they were sleeping mostly so your father was pastor at this point. I don't know that That changed Because things came out and so he went back to school for nursing. Wow and became a out at that time an LPN. I don't even know if that exists anymore man. Yeah it's licensed practical nurse registered nurse and now that the LPN has been cycled out. Now that's what he became and he worked in the hospitals and they and and they both worked at night which like I said. They slept most of the day and then they were gone at night. So you know I was. I was at home alone alone at night. Just you just you so as you got older and you you came to college because you weren't really talking to your parents. It's much or even probably looking at them and they can you know I want to be just like my dad or my mom. What made you choose the career that you're doing right now? I would say and this is gonNA sound a little cliche but my dean at Forest Lake Academy was a quality individual A he was a strong man physically emotionally. He's confident but in this really quiet way so he wasn't off pudding. He was approachable. All and He was he was this strong later. But like I said he's soft spoken so I felt comfortable around him You know they were times where I was disobeying the rules of the dorm and he was just very generous in his Patients and And I saw that. He enjoyed himself he. He seemed to enjoy the guys he hung out with us. He had US over for lunches and and at his house His wife partnered with him and made their home accessible to us. He knew things about us that I was always surprised that he knew because he was this observant and So I think that had to be a large part of what eventually brought me back to the idea of denying because because going to college I had no idea I didn't I didn't know except that this was the next step so did you. What did you pick as your major when you were here for four years five years I was here? Total of five years I took a year out and and came back I didn't know what I wanted to take. I started out with the. Oh and that changed. Really quick. The the allergy yes and that change range quick so I ended up just because I didn't know a career path and I didn't know what I wanted to do. I ended up taking classes that I just enjoyed which was which were history classes in English classes. Mostly but I actually ended up with a history and religion degree. Oh so you've got a a double major yes. I was very close with my religion because I stayed in that for a year and a half because they just didn't know what else so I was picking up a Lotta history classes at the time as well so I ended up close enough to do both so. Did you think when you graduated graduated. I guess I'll just go get my certification albeit teacher. No I didn't want to be a teacher. I took those classes because I enjoy. I enjoy the topics But I I knew that I did not want to be a teacher. Not I didn't WANNA be in that setting and that's similar to pastor. I didn't want to be in that. I got had a preacher's sermon every week setting It just didn't feel right. It felt uncomfortable So no I did not want to be a teacher church. The only reason I probably became a dean other than what I was telling you earlier about my Dean High School is that I took a year route. I went back to force lake. The same dean was there as when I was a student there so I worked for him for a year and found out out that this was something that I could do. I felt comfortable enough in in the residence hall setting..

"Welcome back to another episode fills fills philosophies. I'm your host Philip Warfield and. I'm so glad that you've joined me. This is a podcast all about this twenty year old. Still trying to figure out what he wants to do with the rest of his life. So today I'm interviewing one of my mentors and friends. His name is John Sager. He's been a dean here at my university's men's dorm for many years but he's also served as a mentor mentor from me. Why I've been trying to figure out my journey? He's always in my corner. He's rooting for me. I've always wondered how somebody like him manages to become dean. And all the crazy stories stories we must hear every day. So what if I became dean later in life. Thanks for being on the show Dean Sager. It's a pleasure or we appreciate you coming on by so all summer. Because I've been working here with you you and I have been talking about books and all kinds of different art. Talk to me a little bit about your love for history and talk to me about what you're reading right now and how you choose your books all that good stuff. We'll history was to me growing up and escape There was a lot out of kind of loneliness in in my childhood so books were very important to me and my grandmother actually will probably get into this later but My foster grandmother used to read to me and read books probably win over my head at the time and they were history bugs. They biographies biography. is very young but I learned to love books that they could be companions to me and stuff. So that's where my love of history came from In books the same thing I remember young childhood I went to libraries because free books and I could hang out out there and feel safe there and He had books in the middle of in the middle. The Nile in the library. I love that kind of thing. So that's kind of where I learned to love books I read. There's is a lot of things not just history but a variety of things as far as art art. I don't know where that came from. Fill up I think it stemmed from there's Sometimes void award in my heart. Avoid in my life and I feel it through these creative avenues and it helps me through that time of avoid and is therapeutic for me and and of course once you get a little bit better anything than it becomes joy in another way as well so wow I really like that. especially that it's artists therapeutic for you. Reading is like your companion and you said you mentioned a foster stir grandmother. Yes yes she was. I went my my dad. Had An affair with my mom and he it was a pastor and a little bit of a hush hush thing at the time were and so they They arranged for me to live in a foster stor home and that home was hit. That home was amazing. Phillip it was. It was a blessing in that it was a loving safe place but it was curse curse in that when I was taken out of. That is very confusing. It was very Uprooting and at the time as as a child I think goes around six years old it was a little bit of a tra- betrayal of trust that I felt even towards towards my foster family even though it wasn't their fault I know that now but I know yes. I didn't know why I was pulled pulled out of that. I thought it was their idea at the time. So but the families self was was wonderful. I call them GRANDPA and grandma and they had probably seven or eight kids in the in the house. My GRANDPA took Huntin I was little Ah I don't even think he shot anything. When we went the whole point was to kind of hang out in the woods and be together? He had woodshop And even talking talking this through. I'm realizing that he probably had a lot to do with my my love for creative things because he did have a woodshop he restored award antiques. he would cut blocks of wood for made a play with and to create things with here a big vegetable garden. I hung out there a lot so he worked with his hands going. Yes exactly exactly even if it was just vegetables or something like that for him. It was art. He was Helping to create something and that's a good point. Yes I believe he was a creative person as well and those happen to be the avenues where that came out of Mazo it was a it was a very good home What was difficult? Was the uprooting from that home. So where was all this. This was up in Ohio towards the north a little town called Thompson Ohio. It's not too far from the Great Lakes. So we're pretty far north and Very Idyllic Alec until I turned around six Like I said there was always children around so it was a lot of lot of fun and They created a home that felt very safe and had a lot of activities going on and It was it was just. I still keep in touch with with with parts of the family to this day while and I haven't you know actually lived with them since I was six years old but I've found gone back to visit done the wedding things and the funeral things over the years But yeah it was like I said a beautiful full-time but it made leaving very difficult and did you leave around like seventeen eighteen. No I was six. I was about seven years old when I was pulled out of the home and and now I know that my parents pulled me out and they put me into another foster home to this day. I don't really know why I never felt like I wanted to ask. I never felt like I needed to ask. I never wanted to know from them from my from my mom and dad but a house put it in another foster home for about a year and it was very different. It was a lot of yelling A A lot of intense chaos Anything wrong there's never any physical abuse but the verbal abuse was pretty Intense I remember one time. I probably did something wrong but I was. I hid under the bed. I went deep under the bed. Ed and way back in the corner and I remember as I look back. It's almost like a picture of a dog scared dog go go into the underneath the bad and yeah and You know there was a lot of like I said a lot of yelling reaching in there trying to grab me that kind of thing so it was. I would say that from that moment for a very long time. I shut down because I I was there for a year and then my parents took me and I knew my mom was my mom because she visited me on occasions which was which was kind of That wasn't all that was very It was awkward. I'm sure it was painful. It was like A. Why are you here when you could just take me back home with you right well? It was awkward in the fact that I wanted to go back to my family shore. The foster was my family that really raised that. Ah Yes that was who I considered family. This lady was a stranger to me and and I'm sure that her her as well as an adult. I can see see that but as a child I didn't want to be Around her but I was there at the second foster home about a year and then they took me out of that and we moved the South Carolina and I knew my mom was my mom and my dad was my uncle Jack Wall right because you know they weren't ready to Let me know that information so my mom got a place. We lived in a single trailer for a while and my uncle Jack came to visit occasionally Not a bad home but confusing. I was shut down. I wasn't I wasn't Cooperating in that relationship and they were frustrated especially my mom Lot of silence. It's a lot of left alone. Do My thing type of thing So yeah it was even that and that That lasted quite voice sometime. It wasn't probably until my ears that I began to rectify that situation in my life. So this is from age each seven and then all the way until of course our eighteen probably go off to college right to hot Rod. Eleven years yes. Yes When I went off to college I it didn't look back? I visited home a couple times during college. And that was just transitioned from end of year to go into summer camp or doing something else so I didn't look back. I didn't care to look back. I was you know ambivalent is probably a better better worth and bidder. I wasn't Super Mad about it I was just ambivalent I didn't want anything to do with them and And so I you know to put but my childhood successively is. There's a lot of kind of broken trust and confusion that I have spent a lifetime trying the rectify so that I don't repeat right so that I don't continue that in a young person's life that I come in contact act with or in my relationships that I have personally I don't I don't WanNa continue that That cycle wow. But it's been a lifetime dealing with that and it's been a rocky journey and stuff and the Lord has helped me through that but it has not been an easy journey to overcome that inside. I think most people I think most students would look at my career in the content. They came in with me as mostly positive. Like a good team he Helped me but internally internally that was where the big struggle was and with those personal relationships because those are much more complex and stuff so wow that's a whole.
