I think in general because I think a lot of people want to be be introspective and also there are so many demands and distractions and you're refreshing AFI checking email tax. goes off that it's hard hard to know how to actually start having those types of conversations. Either with yourselves more with the other people in your life adjust practicing asking questions. I was just with a friend yesterday and he was like I know people ask. How am I was like what? That's a very general basic questions. I mean that's the point like what is it that you want to know. Do you want to know. Oh how my day was. Do you want to know how emotionally who's GonNa come up to you and just ask out of the blue. How are you doing emotionally intense? And he's like I know but I WANNA get to the heart of the issue and I was like okay. No one's GONNA start off that way but it is a good practice as you're having conversations to keep asking questions to go a little bit deeper as opposed to leaving things things at the surface level so instead of just saying like how are you fine. Great you can ask someone what's been going on with your week as they answer questions continuing to ask because I find that we all start off surface all of us. We all start off with just a quick answers and the quick shallow questions but the deeper we go the more people realize you're genuinely interested in me. You're genuinely interested in what I have to say or what I think. And when people feel as if they matter they tend to much more quickly be authentic antic and strip some of that surface to me. That's the easiest way to start is to make sure that whoever you're talking to knows that you you actually care about what they're saying and continue to ask deeper questions. The narrative intelligence. It's my favorite thing. It's really the core kind of principle that I teach in the book. Narrative intelligence is our ability to understand and see the stories. Is that are shaping us in shaping the world around us so we talk about emotional intelligence. IQ right but no one ever teaches us that everything we see everything we consume is telling us a story that is shaping how we think and how we view the world and all the industries that I worked in. They know this very well right. Like politics understands. The power story media understands the power of story even the tech industry right. I worked at snapchat snapchat literally created the vertical story format story being a frame for your experience. It's these are industries that understand using story to get people to think a certain way believe and behave a certain way and we the average person just sitting around consuming and have no no idea that that's happening so narrative intelligence is in some ways putting that power back in the hands of people and saying okay. When I'm watching this film? What is it actually you telling me? What is the premise based on? What is the narrative here? Yes it's a fun love story but it is telling me the story that there is one soulmate one person for me out of the billions of people on this planet. Do I believe that or not right like asking that question. That's narrative intelligence in practice. But they're behind every major piece of legislation since the march on Washington and they're a coalition of women's or LGBT or eggs and black and brown ours and so what was awesome about. It was right then I got to kind of get a lay of the land of the entire like social justice progressive policy world. So from there I went to run in the national use arm for the Center for American progress which they call like the White House in waiting. It's Clinton Chief of staff ran it and it was just the forefront of progressive policy and my job was to figure out how to work with young people millennials to get them involved and support their campaigns and in the process ended up on TV quite a bit and my spokesperson and fell in love with that part of the work did a couple more jobs in that arena went to the citizen engagement lab which is like this really cool incubator for social change projects and kind of had carved out at this role for myself as like the Voice of Progressive Millennial America. You know what I mean and I loved it and it was fine and it was flashy and exciting and yet there was a part. Pardon me that felt like I want more than this. For my life felt very limited then became the creative director the first creative director of up worthy which at the time was like a social good buzzfeed inroad a buck and then went to snapchat and built a program. They are called the creators lab. It was the first of its kind. It was a program physical space to bring storytellers digital media creators and influences together to have meaningful conversations. And now I run my own company. So that's the that's the resume and the highlight so we can get when something not on your linked in that we should know about you. I have been singing in the choir and directed McGuire. That was a little girl so music is like my passion outside of work and I bring that up. Just because it's kind of what I do is try to create the same spaces professionally that I felt. As a little girl growing up a pastor's kid singing and having meaningful meaningful conversations and community with people that still very much a part of the mindset that I bring to everything I do. What's your favorite song to Sing Whitney? Houston's I love the Lord which she sang in the preacher's that's why I love it. It's so good. When you started to say Whitney Houston I was like Oh my God me too? I'm like I WANNA dance with somebody and then you went into. Yeah I know I'm GonNa Dance. Somebody's a good one. So let's talk about how you grow grew up in DC. Your father was a preacher. You call yourself a preacher's preacher's daughter for life. What does that mean to you? The way that I view the world everything than I am came from that experience so the way TV depicts black. Churches coaches is actually not the way that most black churches in America are most of them are actually very small kind of like mom and pop. They call them storefront churches. So that's what ours was and felt like a giant family family. He started the church literally in our basement when I was nine months old. So when people say they grew up in church like literally of course then the church moved out and had the real building and all that stuff but my life revolved around a couple of key principles around service so ours was the door that was always open. If you needed a place to stay needed to be bailed L. out of jail in the middle of the night like you called my father it was that kind of orientation around just selfless giving it was oriented around having honest authentic conversations so whether it was because he was counseling people or the group or Sunday mornings. It was just this. Is the place where you can be real where you can be. Authentic used. Always say like we're not interested. Is it in your Sunday. Best like how you look in your outfit but we want to get to know the real you and have meaningful conversations and so that is kind of been a thread through everything that I've done in my life. I've realized that I've been doing that whether it was in the sphere of politics or media or attack my main mission was select. Let's cut through the BS and have meaningful conversations that can help you change your life and change the world in some way and I got that straight from from my father and really both of my parents. We met you with four ever really knowing this part of your background and so it was really really fun to kind of research and read more about you realize what a huge part of who you are is really based around your dad and based around growing up that way and around faith we are struck once said where you said you define in view faith specifically that your faith is about wonder what does that mean in general but particularly for for our generation for those who grew up like in the nineties in two thousand and even now the way that faith is presented in the public sphere is very much about certainty. Like you have to know these these things and believe these things. There are these lines around religion. That safe you you know you have to know with absolute certainty that this happened in this way and I just find and that to be such a limiting way of thinking about a God who was ultimately big massive and unknowable. Right and so I prefer to think of faith as looking at the. Aw and under of the things that I don't understand the things that there are no clear answers for. I'm not GonNa sit in debate science. There's an answer for that right but there's so many things we don't know and don't understand and you can't put words to love you can't put words to kind of like your own growth and development and all of these beautiful amazing things and so my faith practice is really really grounded in just the wonder awe of life and how how it exists and how we communicate and engage with one another and I think if you do that you can kind of free yourself from so many restrictions that society and institutions have put on your faith and your spirit and your internal life. I feel like that was beautiful too. Yeah I'm amazed that someone who has this authentic sense to face can then go into politics girl me too and and I are benthic since a face because I think that both parties all parties. There's kind of a religious pandering. How did you reconcile that? It was was hard but I went and pretty naive. I went into that world for the purest reason possible which I must say actually a lot of my colleagues did to. Let's be clear. A lot of people who are doing social impact work whether on the activist side of the political side tend to go in with a really pure mission. I want to change people's lives. I went to help help. People recognize their own power change systems and structures all that stuff like I felt like it was a continuation of my fathers when he did in our community. And I was like. This is just a different Scale a different level in a way to do that that you know spirit and and services one thing but let's talk about systems so I went in with that mindset and then saw what it is that I think everybody sees. which is you know all the red tape all the hypocrisy again very similar to how most people view religion right these are institutions? That are very change focused and I think when you go in with that power gets involved and things become corrupted and so it was really hard and talk about this in the book and the chapter on faith with and actually in the chapter on work and in identity. I think I talked about I do but just this idea that I was struggling to reconcile all the different parts of WHO. Yeah I was and so at work. I didn't talk about faith a lot for very obvious reasons right especially if you're progressive. We're not supposed to talk about that. Because Faith Jason Religion is supposed to be owned by conservatives and so that's just not a thing that's really cool to talk about and then on the flip. When I was home in my faith environment I was not talking about the fact that like Hey I am on the frontlines literally fighting for marriage equality fighting for reproductive rights and justice which were taboo topics in the church and so I was was kind of walking this line for a while and I think part of why I ended up at a point where I said? I can't do this anymore. I have to remake my life and write a new story for myself was because because of that I was living kind of this divided existence.

"In Denver in just a minute we're going to talk to Colorado Attorney General Phill Wiser about how states in Vail Colorado but first a quick news update that's appropriate for an episode all about law and order a federal judge just put a hold on the trump administration sage house plans here with us to help sort out is native cover a familiar voice if you have been listening to this podcast for Awhile Nigga is the vice president for public lands and senior policy counsel at the National Audubon Society NATO is also the lawyer I call up I whenever I need to understand public land's issue so Nigga what just opened with the sage grouse and how big a deal is it well it's a very big deal if it was the right season to sage grouse would be out there dancing not just on the season a court in Idaho just enjoined or put on hold the amendments that the trump administration put in place to the range wide the plans that had been in effect to conserve the greater sage grouse these were plans that effectively kept the bird off of the endangered ABC's list because they were so meaningful in conserving the habitat conserving the bird and providing a path forward so the in the plans then these are the ones that were put in place in two thousand fifteen what one of the ironies in this case is that the the plaintiffs originally filed this case against the Obama Administration but then things shifted obviously right these plaintiffs originally brought a lawsuit to improve two thousand fifteen plants notably they wanted them wrapped in place felt they could be stronger they were very clear on that but in the interim this administration came into place and the reason we've talked before is there's been a theme here of anything the last administration put in place that even smelled a tiny smidge of conservation has been undone or weakened and came in and despite how the broad support bipartisan support across the West for these plans came in and tried to weaken them through these amendments so when they were put in place the plaintiffs that already had this case going just updated it to try to undo these plans but in this case they weren't just talking to strengthen they were seeking to stop them and they went to the extraordinary step of seeking an injunction to basically put them on an immediate hold and that's a pretty high bar for a judge to then three yes we're going to put these trump administration plans on hold I mean give us a sense of how how hard a bar that is for for a judge to then come in and say it's a really high bar that courthouse to find that there's a substantial likelihood the plane going to succeed on the merits of their claims on also that they would be irreparably harmed without an injunction and yes that's legal ease but you'll have to agree I have to take my word that's a very high standard it's it's over and above just bringing a lawsuit so these planes had a lot to show across all of these states what's the next step here more appeals or hitting on t to a trial well we've seen already the BLM saying they want their they want their plans back So we I think could see appeal but I don't see that being successful I mean the judge was very clear he there's a lot of documentation and his decision about all the reasons that these plans don't pass muster I mean I think he said it really well he said the effect on the ground was to substantially reduce protections for sage grouse without any nations that the reductions were justified at really says it all and I think that decisions going to stand in the meantime there's a lot of Lee sales that can't go forward and a lot of lease sales that happened that are gonNA have to be looked at now all right native culver with National Audubon Society thank you so much as always for your insight and implying legal analyst for us here on the podcast thanks for having me our guest this week is the attorney general of the Great State of Colorado feel wiser is one of the state agee's leading the charge against the trump administration's anti public land's policies he's also the former dean of the University of Colorado law school he served has an assistant attorney general in the US Department of Justice he clerked for Justices Byron White and Ruth Bader Ginsburg at the US Supreme Court and he is here with us in the CWC offices today Phil Wiser welcome to the podcast. It's awesome to be here so you have been on the job for about ten months give us a sense I in what the Attorney General's Office does who do you represent how do you decide when to take a case on let me answer that question a couple of ways I there's three parts of the job and they relate together I I need to make legal decisions on a range of issues from protecting your land air and water to consumer protection constitutional law I have been so fortunate to live a life that I've had such exposure to rich issues as a practitioner is a scholar teacher so thinking about legal issues for me is kind of bread and butter and obviously one of the core challenges we have and really it's true north is figuring out what's the right answer and to do the right thing to protect Colorado's number two I've had organization of five hundred people this is a team effort literally I can't decide lots and lots itself I need to have people who are thoughtful who are creative or hard working to develop the important work that goes into our product so yes make legal decisions but actually a bigger job is I am the leader of an organization helping to set the cultural norms the core values and really overall visually organization we can talk more about that two third and this may be the most awesome at the three jobs I represent all the people of Colorado I am elected by the people of Color auto to serve them into protect them using the law so I make a real effort to get out to learn from people to listen so that as I think about the work we're doing is I lead the office I do the people call it a mind so that's in a way my three basic lenses which is what serves the people of Colorado and learning from people the core part of the job second getting the best minds in team working together with other people in auto to decide how to do and then ultimately use my best judgment so give us a sense then of what that startup is like you come on the job in January you're inheriting a I assume a large number of career attorneys and staff but you also then have an opportunity to bring on some folks of your own how do you how do you pick and how do you build a team like that so you hit the ground running so let me also answer this the couple different ways I viewed the campaign is a learning experience during the campaign I didn't actually get a lot of exposure the five hundred people in the office so that pieces we're going to focus on a minute but I did think about the issues a lot and I did get all around the state and listen and learn from people so when I took office it wasn't like Robert Redford and the candidate for those remember that movie which is what now no I had a series of plans that I had thought through articulated such that a lot of people say Phil you're doing what you said with my answer is yes that's why I ran because I want to the job and I had some well developed ideas about the job what is important about the transition though is the five hundred people they are the core of what we're doing and my leadership responsibilities with that team is fundamental to whether I can be successful in not so we had a transition that was really devised on learning about the office and learning about the leadership I've got twenty or so people in the top leadership team all of whom I picked to help lead with our vision and values and we had transition teams that went into each section interviewed people section outside help us bring the right leaders so the natural resources section for example Amy Betty is our deputy and she came from leading the way Order Trust here in Colorado has strong background in water law environmental protection I'd actually met her on the campaign trail when she was running to be a member of the State House you didn't win her race but we got to be friends and now we get to work on these issues I also have taken seriously just learning from the people who were there and I will tell you one piece of the transition in that has been heartwarming is there were some really painful tensions particularly on these issues around public health environmental issues with my predecessor and the prior governor there's initiation and it was not a healthy dynamic and that was I suppose we should point out a democratic governor Republican Attorney General Prior and so now you do have a democratic Gov- democratic a g I'd imagine that makes it somewhat easier to to work across offices yes I think your point is well underscoring that when you have this different philosophy leading the Attorney General's office and leading the governor's administration you are playing what could be interest game and that actually played out around a couple of issues yeah the clean power plan we'll talk about a little bit the methane rule and what that did was fractured nations between clients and the lawyers work with them and one of the goals I had coming in once I sort of got a sense of this as hey I want to help make clear we are all on the same team too the other and I want to build processes where clients are going to be heard listen to respected where our lawyers feel empowered to work for their clients so I've actually brought in a number of our partners people like Jill Ryan Colorado Department of Health Environment People like Dan gipps who's the head of the permanente resources and we've had to to your work with with Dan Gibbs and your work on conservation the end the environment there is obviously a whole lot going on right now as we just heard I'm native their Sagebrush Gr- sage grouse issues there's all sorts of issues with the trump administration that we are seeing states lead on so how do you decide with limited time limited resources how does a state step in and how do you decide okay we're going to take on the trump administration on issues XYZ so during the campaign I was a close observer of these issues and particularly because there were these conflicts with my predecessor and then governor Hickenlooper let me talk about with the situations that I really addressed quite early on and continue to be issues I the clean power plan there's a case called Massachusetts versus EPA it's an important case because it recognizes the authority of State agee's to represent their states and argue important positions before the US Supreme Court in that case it said the EPA has an obligation to address carbon carbon dioxide as harmful to.

"They're squaring the earnest Mary's, and they're going to be in cancer for year and a half. And they're going to encourage you to grow things, whatever you've been visiting since may of last year, they're not going to encourage you to grow. And of course, may of seventeen Komi got fired which started the whole Muller investigation. And that was when sessions recused himself from the investigation and this week sessions got fired right? Jeff Sessions of the attorney general. So the beginning in the end, okay. He's gone now we're bringing in somebody new so that's the backwards for the cancer nodes shifting. We're outta Leo into cancer. Then the fourth thing was there was a really juicy new moon in Scorpio at fifteen degrees on the world access the world point, and wherever you have Scorpio that houses starting a new story. Fifteen degrees the cancer houses starting a new story. But at the back end of it, if you've got plans at the back there, really active the Ernest the Aries houses cleaning up the mess. No, just four months to clean, the mess up. And then you're off and the sad part is starting to grow and expand. So we're growing in the cancer house, and we're growing in the sage house were cleaning up the mess in the areas house, and we're initiating new action in the Scorpio house. Fifteen degrees. Lot of activity. I lotta people last week all all sorts of crazy stuff. People wanting to jump off bridges people wanting to die and kill themselves. People writing me and complaining about the and and it. You wanna kinda watch what came up for you last week because it's important for you to work on that. Now while you're in this is an Aries 'cause it's taking you back. So in the case of you know, some of the people that were ready to jump off the bridge. It's like, okay, you're ready to jump off the bridge. You're ready to walk into the sea. And drowned or you're ready to whatever. Method you were choosing to leave but consequences of your actions. Don't do that. You know, you know, think about where you wanna go next because what it's energies about. Because of the area's backwards is making us think what I didn't do what you know. I didn't do that it also because it's Aries makes it a little bit contentious. We did see the president kicking the reporter out accusing her of salting someone when she tried to take the mic from him which technically she assaulted him. But that's all right. Another metoo whimper without a bang. I really wanted to bang people. I wanted to bang, but whatever, but I had a couple of people really react to me. And I you know, and I recognize when you want it when someone reacts to what you say, and I I reacted to a couple people too. And I was like, wow. Look at that reaction when you react to somebody under these transits. It's something unfinished. Sched? Right. It's something that you haven't done yet. It's something you haven't worked on yet. It's something that the universe is saying, hey, hey, pay attention to this. So I had someone right to me complaining about the politics in my column, and I'm like, well, really don't do a lot of. I mean, I use them as an example areas in you know, to fire we had the fires in California. These people have been burned out of their houses. And I'm not using it to be mean to the people in California. It's just what the energies doing kind of sudden unexpected they couldn't even get away. They were caught in their cars. That's the suddenness of this energy. Right. And it's it's not to be disrespectful or it's not to say. Hey, so I had somebody reacted my politics. And I said, hey, you know, the world is the astrology is the world when we look at the world around us, and we pay attention to what we tune into. Right. That's something in our chart. Like, I didn't tune into. I didn't say, hey, you know, I saw it go by. But those two couple that got killed in the helicopter crash in Texas while there was your Dyson Orpheus in the sky. Normally, you're a dice dies. But in this case Orpheus win with her. They both died in the crash a couple of hours after their wedding. And I I didn't talk about that. But I noted it, you know, but I didn't hook into it. I didn't go research it, whereas the Muller, you know, the Muller kid that was the twenty year old that was trying to frame Muller that one I research. I look at that kids chart so watch what you hook into. So 'cause that's the area that you your heart is wanting you to fix or he'll. Or work on. And we're gonna have this t square for a month and a half 'til January's. Clips is when we have the last two clips at one degree of Leo. So you're gonna have stuff come up. And when you got stuff coming up, you wanna go work on it. So I had a woman get mad at me about, you know, the me too movement people hanging it on their sleeves, and I'm kinda like, well, no don't hang it on their sleeves. It's just part of their experience, and it's important part of their experience. And then she revealed she'd been assaulted a number of times she'd been stocked number times. She almost got caught up in thrown into a lake, you know, or reservoir or Gulf of Mexico, whatever I was like, and you don't think you're traumatized. You don't think maybe you need to like work with us? You know, go work with this big. As it was no fine. Leave me alone. And I'm like, okay. Well, you know, how the universe works? It comes back to us. And it goes, no, no we have to do this. We're gonna keep knocking on your door knocking on your door knocking on your door knocking on your door asking you to pay attention to this. So I encourage you take the easy way out pay attention to what's knocking on your door. Whatever you're upset about go handle it. Go work on it. Go deal with it. If someone makes you mad look at what made you mad, and whatever that is go deal with whatever you reacted to in the other guy. It's your stuff this last week. Okay. I mean, I reacted to a couple of things myself. And I watched it and I watched myself react. And I went all right. I'm reacting to that. But now what's the approach? I wanna take. To it. And what's the what's the proper way proper the wrong word, but what's the way to heal it to heal my reaction right to understand where I'm coming from a place of wounded nece because in the middle of all this other who Haag going on Chiron is there at the last degree Pisces. So he's getting stimulate. He's saying let's stimulate your wounds. Let's wait those wounds up. So I have one friend who's currently in the process of separating from partner partner has the dogs. And there's little dog rushed up and tried to liquor. She burst into tears sobbing, and she ran away. Right. And I'm like, well, you know, you need to establish visitation with the dogs. Don't. No, no, no, no. Well, there are dogs. And she's you know, you haven't seen your dogs in four months. That's a long time and dogs are important to Virgo girl, you know. And so what you wanna watch. And you really really really wanna be gentle with yourself and other people so other. People are reacting this week, you want to say to them or last week there 'cause we're still processing there's a lot of energy shifting and it's a big big shift. You wanna watch what you're still reacting to because you're innocent Aries is giving you for months to clean it up. Chiron retrograde in Pisces is giving you time to clean it up until he goes, direct and Neptune. Of course is still going backwards until he goes direct. So we've got a couple of plants in there all the emotional ones. So watch what you reacted to emotionally last week. And if someone reacted emotionally with you, that's something they have to work on you may not be your job, but you can gently share maybe they should go work on this. And they might get mad at you and yell you. And that's okay. But at least just had it. And then whatever you reacted to you go work on. Okay. 'cause this is your stuff and the whole idea here is we're getting ready for this. Woo of energy, which is big. And we really really really wanna be clear and remember the messages of the heavens was the Orpheus message was don't look back. Look forward. Get the vision of where you're going and focus on that. Don't look back. And then the other mission was the other message was that there's this huge change and our job is to work with that huge change in the best way. We can and the universe points to us. How to do it? And it says go grow your secretary's house. Go grow, your cancer house watch for changes emanating from your Aries house making you rethink things or pointing out things that maybe need to be adjusted and watch where you're feeling a little wounded because chirons and they're mixed. Two. And so grow cancer, grow, sad, and cleanup Aries and fix the wounds in Pisces K,
