"Nashville. Why? Why Nashville? A beautiful brand new stadium in the cities incredible. So I want to experience that. I haven't been there since 2007, actually 2008. We had Olympic qualifying in Nashville and I was like, this city's cool. So I want to live it. I want to see them in a final. That would be pretty special. And if it's not there, let's go to Omaha. I've never been to Omaha, it's probably the only time that I've ever go to Omaha. So I'm in for those two. Wow. I'm all in for Omaha. I don't know if they can host that home. Don't dimensions. So I hope they host that Morrison stadium, which is creighton's soccer stadium, which holds like four or 5 K and is like a perfect soccer stadium. And I agree with Charlie. I've been toma. I'm obviously a huge fan, but when else am I gonna get to go for a final or a soccer game? I would throw out Sacramento as a cool one. Just to have it at a lower division non MLS stadium to have that MOS or non MLS winner, first time since the Rochester rhinos way back now, like more than an easily more than a decade, and we might be at two decades at this point. It's even more, right? It's at like 26 years year before MLS started, I want to say. I don't know. It's been a long time. I thought they won after MLS came. I don't know. Facts. Facts about not again not again, guys. Yeah, facts about it are some point. By the way, Daniel shallowly is 25. So he is technically elected 24. Just so we have that on the record. All right, let's get in some other stuff and get through the rest of this show here. U.S. M and T rosters out, we discussed that, but Brendan aronson two leads is officially official Rochester one in 1999, the exact year I said it at crew stadium over the rapid ice. We have one from sergeant pickles here, which still makes me laugh. Gandhi takes on the small possibility that aaronson dust and Adams could all end up at Leeds with Jesse marsh. What do you think about that, Charlie? Would that be good for sergino dest and Tyler Adams?.

Sacramento Suspect Released From Prison Before Shooting

"From Sacramento, back to the rundown. The suspect in the Sacramento mass shooting was out of prison, despite receiving a ten year term. That's right, it happened again. The board of parole urged Martin remaining custody, but he won his release, the subject of a plea by Sacramento county district attorney Anne Marie schubert's office, went unheeded, and the board of parole let him out. Way to go, California, 6 people are dead, four others in critical condition.

"All these other teams going to step it up on the defensive end once the playoffs come around. This other's just playing hard. Fair question. Everybody else, because they're relying on that. But they're ahead of everybody in that sense. Yeah. That thing kind of narrows down. Email got asked about that today. I think he kind of just brushed it off and said, oh, this stuff with translate. But transition game tightens up a little bit in the playoffs. Shooting becomes a lot more important. That's obviously an area they lack in quite a bit. Would they shoot tonight? Tonight was actually a ridiculous shooting night for them. Yeah, they were 50%, I think, from three. And that's all a Tatum and brown, essentially, and prichard going off. So they have some of those explosive nights in them. But mostly you're talking about a 33 to 36 at best percent, 3.2, which is fine. That's not the worst in the league, but there's some nights where they really go cold, like 18% against Detroit, a couple bad ones before that go on state wasn't great. So there's lingering concerns with this group, but I'm very confident. I've put myself out there and said, they're probably the team to beat in the east, just the way they're playing, the point differential of this number one. Number two in conference record behind Miami. The record's not number one, two wish, but it could be soon. 11 games to go, they could really work their way up there in the standings. And it looks like they're gonna hear just based on who they're playing late in the year and a lot of competition against teams like the bucks and the bowls who are in that race. That road trip ten the year against Chicago Milwaukee and Memphis is going to be electric. But 11 ago here, stretch run really starting to take shape. Our next games Denver at 8 o'clock on Sunday, Celtics nuggets out there in Denver. So that would be a fun one, share most of the crew will be here for that game..

"Works really good together. So I don't know if you want to do like that all start thing they did with the hawks were like all 5 guys get credit for whatever. I think all 5 were all stars that year on Atlanta could 5 guys through the defensive player of the year, probably not. Could you have code defensive players of the year in Spartan rob? That's probably a little more fitting. But unfortunately, you get the defensive players of the year. I don't know if you're going to get that, but Rudy's probably just going to win. At least that's what they're saying. Yeah, again, it's almost like he's just kind of has the right. Yeah, exactly. I think that would be his third. Rob's rob's time is coming though. Let's be honest. Rob rob's got years to go here and I mean. Well, no guards won it since 96, Gary Payton, so it would be really cool if smart one. I'm ruined for it because that would be a great story. Almost a feather in his cap to his career. I mean, he's not going to be an all star. He's not going to be an all NBA guy. He's got a couple of defenses, but you all of a sudden put a defensive player of the year trophy on your case. Yeah, I mean, I don't think he's I don't think he's there. Smart? Yeah. And defensive player of the year. I mean, are there odds out there right now for these? He's not in it, rob's in it. It's a big bias for sure. But I do think if you have a guard who's gonna do it, a guy with the reputation like smarts goes a long way because everybody in the media, what do they say, the heart and soul, one of the best defenders, blah, blah, blah, blah. So like normally, a guy like that would be flying under the radar, where it's smart, you know, he's got the media reputation. He's got the great reputation around the league for that part of his game. So he's going to do it if anybody's going to do it here. It's just do the Celtics get a guy because of how many people are involved in their defense and rob smart probably splitting the vote a little bit on there. And so I'd agree that probably not going to have a representative and that a word, but they're the best defense by far. And I'm sure they'll roll with that and be happy with that rather than any individual words email I saw today climb the ladder coach of the year. I think he was third in the athletics. We saw a third. Okay, I thought I saw like maybe fourth or 5th. Invite him might have been fourth, but we're using that top 5. So he's in that conversation too. Monty Williams. Who else did I see up there? Oh, kid was right there. Yep. He deserves it..

"The first half of this season, it felt like the Celtics were, you know, they probably had a worse record than the kings, to be honest, start the year. So, you know, it's turned around dramatically for the Celtics here. And it's honestly a special run that they're on. I don't know how deep they're going to go into the play. I don't know what's going to happen next because like we've talked about, you know, some of these teams they've played. The guys have been undermanned or they've been bad teams. So yes, the subjects are taking care of business and they're dominating opponents and they're playing the best basketball arguably in the NBA over the last three months here. But you have to wonder how that's going to change when the playoffs come around. Teams start to lock in on defense on their own end. Guys get healthier. Rotations shorten a little bit. So there's a lot of questions that still ask me where constantly checking the standings to try to figure out who the Celtic should want to play and who they match up with best. So it's not like they're this shoe in number one team where it's like, yeah, give us whoever you want. We'll just take care of business. It doesn't feel that way, but the difference is they should be able to go toe to toe with pretty much anybody in the Eastern Conference. So I'm not saying that they're gonna win it against any team, but they should be competitive and it should make for a decent series. So Celtics had a chance to go up to three today with Dallas in Philly, Dallas obviously has been on a tear going back to that win on Sunday, but Philly did handle them here. 32 from embiid 24 from harden. So they stay in three. Celtics firmly in four now, a game over Chicago who lost here. Chicago that works tonight against Phoenix. So that's where you want to be, essentially, I'd say it's like that three to four ish range. You either get a Cavs team or raptors team. I think that's our most exciting outcome is the Toronto series, or the Chicago boss thing, which will probably have the potential to be dare I say O 9 S I'm sure you really love that series, Jimmy..

"It's too bad about sabonis. I know I know we're not going to talk about them too much, but me and you are big sabonis, guys. And the guy goes 30, 20 and 5 tonight. I mean, just an unbelievable stat line. And it's honestly capable of those numbers. More often than not, he's just a great all around big man. He's just got this. He just works. He works in there. Great touch. And also he missed a lot of shots at the rim today. He should have had more than 30 points. But it's just sad that he's going to just sort of toil away on Sacramento for him. He took all the pacers worst players with them. No offense to Justin holiday and Jeremy lancome missed this game. But. I was her in Indiana's best coming back with them. And he has to join the king's cast that lost buddy heel, then tyrese Halliburton, and it's a couple of years, 2024 he's a free agent. So he's had to grind through this for two more seasons after this. We want to see him in ask for any of this. I want to see him in Boston. I still go back and forth the way rob's playing about if I'd go back in time and do that, but that was the only one I would really consider train wrong for and now obviously it's either the question Sacramento is just going to stick with them out there at least until that contract year. But man, even if it wasn't Boston, you would have liked to have seen him go somewhere good and it doesn't get any worse than where he went. It does not get anywhere. So I mean, how easy are they to score on? Is Taylor and brown running these teams sometimes and listen Sacramento early in the year was the first one where they beat this team by 60 essentially. It's just so easy to score on them. I know Darren Fox didn't play in either of these games. So they're a little shorthanded. John will say check it off the list as another opponent that is missing their guy. That's crazy though. The defense stinks. 28th in the league, just like last year, a new coach, Alvin gentry. I guess same staff, but they are just horrendous..

"And Brown got going so I guess maybe that's part of it. But these guys don't play a lot of minutes together. So there was plenty of opportunities for Sacramento in that first half to throw some doubles, throw some blitzes away. They started to do them the second half. He slowed way down, but it was way too late. They were already down 23 at the start of the third quarter there. So this is the game with him. I still think you can throw him off a little bit if you put some. If you make other guys hurt you, we've seen that in some recent losses like Dallas, but if you just try to guard tape and one on one right now, he's in a place where he's just going to scorch you. He's got the flamethrower out right now. I thought he was going to go for 50 in this one starting with 22 early in the second. Yeah, I mean, he was on. And even when they doubled them, he was finding ways to kind of get out of that. You know, his passing is just on another level right now. He's seeing the court much clearer than he was to start the year. And that's really kind of unlocked him. I think that's made him more of a more confident player on both ends. The fact that he's, you know, I think not thinking as much out there. He's just kind of letting the game come to him and using his instincts. So I think that that's translating to his comfortability on the offensive end. And like, man, every shot he takes, you just kind of think it went in. I mean, his field goal percentage tonight was unbelievable. I think I saw 12 or 15 if that's how it ended. 12 of 16. 16. Okay, yeah, so I mean, really, you can't ask for anything better than that. I mean, if you're not his style of play. And then, you know, we gotta, you know, we joke about not mentioning jaylen Brown all the time, but we do have to give him his props as well, because him and Tatum were kind of going back and forth tonight. And it wasn't like in a bad way. It wasn't like one guy's offense was hurting the other guy. So this was one of those games where both players were on. And, you know, I would say making each other better. Which is one of our big concerns to start the season in last season was their inability to do that. It was like my turn your turn. We said that a million times. So not the case tonight. And listen, they needed these guys tonight because the bench continues to be an issue and I know we'll get into that a little bit later. But these are your two, this is your two headed monster Brown and Tatum and you're only going to go as far as these guys take you and tonight they took you as more than more than as sure. It.

"Coming up. Sound is almost like a magic trick in my mind. Almost, yeah. First though, let's do the numbers. Now industrials have two 46 today on the point scale 6 10% 36,000 to 5 85. And as that cup one 87 about 1.2%, 15,000 to 8 32, the S&P 500 boosted 30 points about 6 10% 47 and 96. In a eula was just telling us about the net gas boom the U.S. energy information administration sighting, the S&P gobin Sachs commodity index says overall energy prices up nearly 60% by the end of 2021 from where they began on the first trading day of 2021, go figure that out. Electric carmaker Tesla jump started the year with the announcement it delivered 936,000 cars last year 87% higher than 2020 Tesla reved up 13 and a half percent damage in bonds. You'll know the ten year T note rose to 1.63%. You're listening to marketplace. This marketplace podcast is supported by give well. It's people like you who make our work possible and your ongoing support that makes people smarter every single day. So thanks again and happy new year. This is marketplace. As of the last official count, there were more than 580,000 homeless people in this economy. That count those two years ago, January of 2020 and the people who study this say the number has almost certainly grown during the pandemic. About 25% of America's homeless population lives in California, more than 11,000 people in the capital Sacramento. And that really reality and the spread of ten camps on city streets there has prompted Sacramento's mayor to propose that that city become the first in the country to declare a right to housing. Marketplaces met Levin explains what that might really mean. Michael Hague says he's been homeless for 5 years. Today he's inside a one person camping tent on 15th street in midtown Sacramento, across from a craft brewery and a quality in. Yeah, I take stair quilt. Okay. First get your frantic and bipolar. You do. Yes. So now I'm out here able to take your meds. I'm not even function. No, because I can't pay for it. It's clear higgy could use medical attention. He takes off a wet sock to show me a swollen right foot with only two full toes. He says in the past he was addicted to math. Has anyone come around here and offered you either a bed in a shelter? No, I was scared to go to wood. Higgs says he's had bad experiences with other shelter residents. At least 6 tenths have lined the east side of 15 street since April, the sidewalk isn't blocked, but piles of trash spill over into the street. Mario Gonzalez had to assign his employees at chandos cantina new role, morning street sweeper. The Mexican restaurant in nightclub is less than 50 feet from the encampment. Every single morning, my team members, they have to clean it up. It's so hard. That frustration you hear in Gonzalez's voice, you hear that from business owners all over the city. Compassion fatigue is settling in. Sacramento mayor Darrell Steinberg feels like he's in a race against time. If we do not make this better, someone will come along and write an initiative that will be draconian that will be inhumane. He could see even progressive California getting regressive with tactics that involve more law enforcement and criminal penalties, which is why last month, Steinberg proposed a pretty radical solution. Treat housing like public education, a legal right. The law requires us to provide free public education to kids and thus requires us to build public schools housing people is as important as we say it is. Shouldn't the same right and obligation on us exist? Sacramento's right to housing would work like this. If the city doesn't have enough homeless housing and right now it's thousands of bed short, a homeless person could sue the city. Steinberg hopes a court order would speed the construction of new housing, cutting through red tape. Advocates for homeless people are mostly supportive of the idea, except for one controversial part. So I think it's coming from a good place, but the obligation to accept I'm stuck on. Debra paget is a Professor of social work at NYU. Steinberg's plan would get every person experiencing homelessness of choice, maybe a shelter, maybe a motel room. If the person who is homeless still refused, they would be forced to move from their current location. Well, they're going to move, but they're still going to be out on the streets and they'll start and encampment somewhere. So you're just pushing the problem down the road a bit literally. Padgett fears right to housing could easily morph into right to shelter New York State's policies since the 1970s court case. Right to shelter did get people indoors, but pageant says it didn't get enough people into permanent housing. It just got them stuck in a homelessness cycle. People are living out their lives for years going from shelter to street. It's a horrible way of living. Mayor Steinberg is showing me the latest shelter the city has constructed a so called sprung shelter, rapidly constructed housing that was put together in just a few months. It's got 90 beds and there's a dining room and laundry services. People say, well, New York tried that and failed just because they did it in a way that was not up to the kind of quality standards and dignity standards that we would expect doesn't mean that we can't do it right here. Right to housing was greeted warmly by the city council, which will likely vote on it later this year. There's no estimated price tag yet, but Steinberg says whatever.

When California Told Mario Murillo to Stop Preaching the Gospel, He Found a Way

"Hey, folks I'm talking to Mario Marlo about everything. We're talking about politics. We're talking about the gospel. You have spent decades doing ministry, and then a few years ago, I guess I think you thought that you were just going to shuffle off to buffalo, retire. I don't know what you thought. Something happened. Can you talk about that? Well, I was told that because of the pandemic, I could impeach the gospel in California. It was the first time, yeah. And so that kind of like was my wake up call. And one day I was sleeping in about middle of the night, I had this experience where I saw a man from Fresno, California, who was the embodiment of what the culture had done to people. He was homeless. He was addicted. He was in agony. And he said these words to me. If you want to, you can come and help me. And what I put together from that, I woke up, I got in the word of God. And I got to Matthew 8 where the leper said to Jesus, if you will, you can heal me. And then the vision of Paul Macedonia, where he said, the man appeared in the vision said, come over and help us. I went to Fresno, brought a tent against every local injunction against meeting, but I felt that God told me to do it. The police were on our side. The mayor of the city sat with me. The owners of the park that we put up our tent in, said, we're going to stand with you in case Sacramento decides to shut you down. But instead of being shut down, thousands came to the tent and were healed and born again

"Yeah, or maybe it should take away from the story is that we shouldn't let people who are Seventeen be National Guards in the National Guard. I think that's important when I called when you're in the bath when you're in the National Guard, you know what I mean? A national Guardsmen. Oh, right. You just said that. Yeah. Wow, it's lovingly calls itself home of the green monster as something which has proudly stated on the welcome sign as you enter Town most however know the creature by the name Flatwoods Monster or the Phantom of the Flatwoods this story started out as oral folklore and eventually became the town's claim to fame several chairs statues which by the way chair statues. I don't really know how to explain them, but they're like giant there's like giant chairs you sit in like you take pictures and like like this dog. Chairs so picture that players. Yeah that you like like tourist Harris like yeah. Yeah. Yeah, totally anyway and like they like crafted like the Flatwoods Monster into the chair. So it's like a big chair statue and there have been there have been multiple of those erected in the monsters honor and there's also a Flatwoods Monster Museum and a three-day Festival in its honor War dead. So yeah, they really latched onto that story. I mean lesson why else are going to go to Flatwoods, you know what I mean. Church, you know just to Flatwoods know we love flop. I'm just saying. Hey, I mean I want to go there I would love to go there me Merced it says that she would also love to go to the festival and I agree like we should go to the Festival it would be so fun and stood on the street and you can take pictures looked at pictures and you can take pictures with pictures pictures pictures. You can take pictures with like someone dresses up as a Flatwoods Monster and like you can take pictures of that. Yeah. She's cute dog. So also by the way, you know Mothman, right? So Mothman Town also known as Point Pleasant West Virginia is only a two-hour drive from Flatwoods. So Mothman like originated of hours away from this town and much later too. Cuz like like I said, this was in nineteen fifty-two. Yeah, so but yeah, it's kind of fun. Like you can go I mean Merced is rights. What the fuck is in the wash West Virginia that's coming out these insane Cryptids, but really that's the real investigation that should happen. Nearly fifty years later investigators concluded that the light was a meteor shower and the creature was a barn owl perched in a tree with shadows making it appear to be a large humanoid. Okay, but let's said you laugh but I don't know. I don't know if I believe it. Well, yeah because we're did they get off? Fiery redhead and robot and a poodle skirt. Yes, exactly. Where's the poodle skirt. So it says great it says page is mostly due to Kathleen maze description of the figure as having small claw, like hands clothing like folds and a head that resembled the Ace of Spades. So like barn owls like they did you have like they don't their head is not pointed but like with their nose and everything they do kind of have like I can see like the general shape but again, like I don't know if I don't know if I buy this an owl so long I know did you know the owls like kill people every year like, they're super dangerous. Excuse me? No, I did not have that. I mean, they're not like terrorists, but they like if they attack you they can like in Jerome badly..

"Milquetoast not have ghosts and just doesn't it doesn't exist. That's true, too. That's true too. Like Do you think the theater that CTC was performing in was haunted? I don't know because that wasn't like some really just a theater. Yeah. Yeah. It was like a theater is like a black box in a building. Yeah like forever and I thought it was it was like an office building. It was like a big office turned into a black box. So it was like a warehouse of all these other offices so it wasn't really like a professor. Yeah. It reminds you of Shakespeare in Love for some reason. Yeah for some reason. Yeah for a very specific reason. Okay. So summer support seeing people and shapes in the mirrors as they prepare for shows one of the sources that Merced has pulled this from said that maybe the shadows in the mirror are the ghosts of former actors who are like putting on their own shows and like a shadow realm which is super cute and creepy and I love the wait and I buy it. I have a question. So yes, there's just a straight-up Shadow. Yeah. Yes. Yeah. There's like Shadows birth. There's like shadows and shapes in the mirrors explicitly and do they just like flit away kind of or you just like see a fucking Shadow. I mean like a place a little bit of both. I think they probably just like see like Shadows like passing through the years which is what is so scary especially cuz it's theaters are a little bit like sucks. You know, yeah. Yeah. No, I know. I just have a mirror like directly across from my bed. And then I they're like just came a point where as like I think I have to have to take that down. I think it's time to take that down my house growing up my room growing up in Tucson. Oh, yes. Yeah. It's oh you've been there. It's not really like a whole like took a closet and it's like a whole like wall of mirrors. Basically. Yeah. Yeah. It was like I looking but like I also saw on like which I saw like on which Tik-Tok that it only matters if it's silver-backed mirrors, like only silver-backed like like it's a type of mirror and it's like how like a lot of old mirrors were made like in like, I don't know home. Gear but basically a long time ago, they're like, they're Silverback. So it's like literally like the back of the mirror like silver. It's like, you know, this ones that like those ones like I have in my apartment right now actually, which is just make sure Blake can't hear me because he'd get really scared. But basically, you know, like how like there's like this meme is that like look dirty because it looks like there's like all those like freckles. Yes doesn't like others are often times like Silverbacks. So like looks like it's like wiping it and you can't get anything cuz it's behind the mirror..

"I remember that. Yeah. Yeah, I heard it. So I just ask you like if I say a word that like is objectively not the right word. Please interrupt me and tell me because I don't know where my brain goes the second the microphone comes on. Okay. So the Sacramento Civic Repertory company became a hub of theater that provided a creative outlet for many in the area and throughout the suburbs of Sacramento one such person to make use of this beloved theatrical troupe was in caps lock off Hanks some of his earliest acting was done with the Sacramento Civic Repertory company. Everyone's favorite man. He really is everyone's favorite man. But like and like I get why phone not listed I'm not speaking out of it. I like don't notice about to happen. I actually cool. I'm ahead but I don't know. I love him and I I just bought I just I guess I don't know why he's everyone's favorite. Is he just like everyone is he is he's everyone's favorite because he's like a non problem. Yeah quite straight man. Yeah, I think like everyone was like like during like the big like me to like when everyone is like literally every week like a different thing was coming out. I think that's kind of when it started where like people not Tom Hanks like and another event totally see like my fav. Like non-problematic White Street, man is Paul rod. Oh, okay. So like yeah, I'm just saying like like like one. Yeah. Yeah. He's cutie. Okay. Well eventually the nonprofit Sacramento Civic Repertory company. It's really a mouthful evolved into a for-profit professional Theatre becoming the Sacramento Theatre Company during the 1980s. I'm glad they changed their name because it's it's a lot nicer and shorter. However, it remains support of space for up-and-coming theater creators and produces different learning programs to this day from 2003 to 2006 money came together to give this much-loved company a facelift and the building a home to the Sacramento Theatre Company was remodeled and renovated three different performance venues were created besides resulting in an improved mainstage theater with larger dressing rooms and a new laundry area.

And this is our first time back on it off is really good to be recording again since the release of Ghostlight. Yeah, it's nice. Yeah, just more leisurely. Yeah, and we feel we're talking earlier and we feel probably a little bit too confident at this point just like with just like the vibe so it's probably will only get more chaotic, but thank you for listening and thank you for sticking with us because it means a lot. I have a dog only had a donut and an iced coffee today, which I think I've said before on the show somehow within eight episodes. So that concerns me a little bit. But so I'm pretty I'm feeling pretty high-energy, which is good for them. Yeah, that's good. I haven't eaten anything. Great other than my blue Gatorade. We really help first here. Okay, so I I don't know. I mean should we just kind of jump into it? What are we doing today? Sacramento Theatre Company? Yeah, let's just jump in great. Let's do it. This script was prepared by Mercedes and I will be your host. I will be telling us your guys lovely story your guide. So a little bit like this is like kind of like a prologue. "Underneath his SUV. In the parking lot sniper jeff boys received a new set of orders. A vest was going to be delivered out of reach of the front door and boys was to take the shot if he had a clear line of sight of any of the captors. The hope was that hostage would be sent out to retrieve the vest and that when they stoop down to pick it up boys would get a clear shot on one of the gunmen inside. It would be tricky given the row of hostages kneeling in front of the main window. But hopefully captor would be standing above them with this plan in place. Sad Sergeant Devlin instructed another deputy to slide the second bullet proof vest the concrete towards the front door but not too close. They wanted it to land far enough away that someone would need to come outside to retrieve it. Once this was done boys waited for the Golden Opportunity inside the store seventeen-year-old long stared at the bulletproof vest lying just out of reach. Reassuringly and mouthed silently go sergeant. Hauptmann had overheard the Threat Veronica. Its target long managed to scramble back safely behind a pillar after a tense silence. The sad team knew they couldn't risk retaliation from long. He had proven himself to volatile. There was no telling telling what he might do. Now that he had been shot at they had to act. Now a sheriff. Deputy threw a flashbang grenades through the broken glass of the front door. FLASH BANG OR STUN. Grenade is a nonlethal. Explosive Device used to temporarily disorientate the senses. It produces a blinding flash of light which can impair vision and caused temporary deafness and loss of balance. "It was three forty pm on Thursday April Fourth Nineteen Ninety one roughly two hours into a tense hostage standoff at the good guys `electronic store in Sacramento California. So far the four gunmen had released three hostages in exchange for a bullet proof vest but thirty seven captives still remained inside one of the gunmen. Long to win. Had just passed the bulletproof vest to a good guys employee. John Lee Fritz long didn't believe the vest was real to told Fritz. Put It on so we could shoot at it and see if it worked. Luckily the stores assistant manager Dave Rhys intervened he calmly suggested that long put the vest on the ground and shoot at it instead. The test would still work without putting any lives at risk. Long's older brother twenty one year old lawyer to win agreed. He snatched the bulletproof vest from Fritz. Place it on the ground away from the hostages preparing to shoot at it but this only made long more upset. He complain that it had been his own idea to test the vest so he should be the one to shoot at. It stepped back allowing his younger brother the chance to prove himself. The bullet bounced off the vest. Proving that it was authentic but long was still upset. One stupid vest was not enough especially when they had originally demanded for clearly. The cops were not taking them seriously. Frustrated long marched over to the front desk where Sergeant Gomez was waiting on the phone long. Grab the receiver and introduced himself as Number One. He was now in charge. Not Loy then. Long spun around and pointed his gun at the hostages. He reportedly yelled. We're going to have to start shooting people because you don't do what we say. Send me somebody bags by now. The authorities had managed to identify the gunman and notified their families. The new wins arrived on the scene and their mother sow beg the sheriff to allow her to speak with her three sons. Sergeant Gomez informed Long Win that his mother was outside the store but long replied that he did not want to talk with his mother and slammed the phone down long appeared to be angrier than ever Dr Thomas Strengths of former FBI crisis negotiator at Quantico observes that hostage-takers often have a story to tell. These tales usually involve version of the events leading up to the hostage crisis at which point the captors already think of themselves as the real victims for long win and the rest of the gunman. The hostage standoff was the result of years of pent up rage. They had constantly struggled to adjust to life in America and came to see themselves as victims of circumstance. This hopelessness seemed to fuel long as he angrily stocked back to the Front of the store. He was determined not to give up until the authorities honored their demands. It was now four twenty seven. Pm Three hours into the negotiations but the division between long win and his older brother Loyd was steadily growing wider the tents hours had illuminated. What each of them had actually wanted while loy simply wanted money to return to his homeland in Vietnam longs desires were more complex. He too wanted to go to Vietnam but he also seemed to have desperately wanted to prove that he was sort of tough guy that he'd seen in the movies and to hopefully impress Sacramento's Asian street gang the Oriental Boys. And while all four of the gunmen were discouraged. With how little they had managed to negotiate long was clearly more agitated than the rest. Meanwhile Sergeant Gomez in the rest of the authorities were becoming more worried now several hours into the hostage crisis. The sheriff's department made the tough call to replace. Sergeant Gomez as negotiator Sergeant. Paul helped men from departments critical incident negotiations team. See I N T would take his place. Experts would later question this sudden. Change calling it a very risky decision. And while is no immediate outburst after the switch some of the hostages would later say that. The gunman clearly became more agitated as a result of the switch thirty-seven-year-old hostage. Alan Story. Said it just got to a certain point where they realized the negotiator for the police was not bargaining in good faith? There were going to have to convince him that they were serious. They were going to have to start killing people. But this was precisely why Sergeant Helpmann had been brought in and in his first contact with.
