Fauci Receives Award, Speaks at University of Chicago

"The top U. S infectious disease expert, Dr Anthony Fauci was at the University of Chicago Harris School of Public policy if they yesterday to receive the 2020 Harris Dean's award. He talked about the early days of the pandemic and says they reasonably assumed, But the information they were getting from the Chinese was that covered 19 was much like the original SARS virus. That's some of the fundamental characteristics that would different. We're really gained changers in this particular pandemic. First of all the fact that this virus is spectacularly capable in transmitting from human to human and sack and land. Like any virus, he's seen stars. Hold two doesn't present symptoms and about 30 to 45% of the people who are infected with it. How, she says The biggest surprise was that 50 to 60% of all transmissions occur from someone who will either never show any symptoms. Or is simply pre

Inside The Russell Wilson-Seahawks Rift

"Years russell. Wilson has been wanting to throw the ball more and at the start of this year. It finally happened russell. Wilson was not good in the first half of the twenty twenty season. He was excellent deep cap touchdown. Seattle you run down there and set in his answer. Any better than that was fourth in yards per attempt. Weeks one through nine i. In passing. touchdown percentage was second in passer rating. Wilson keeps as default talk. He was legit. The best player in the league madden gave him a ninety nine overall rating during the season because he was cooking notion as he throws an accident. Edi feeds defensive player of the years like russell. Lula's legitimately the best guy in football games of the season then week nine arrived and they had this game against the buffalo bills that you recently wrote about. Can you tell us what happened in that game. And afterwards what happened is russell had to cook in the kitchen. Just kind of just caught on. Fire his paycheck wine with a sack at a takeaway from russell wilson. I actually watched that game with a former cr defensive and cliff april and teased talking me through it. And he's like russ's off he's trying to do too much and i think turned it over like four times. He threw a pick on the goal. Line throws for the jordan with tyco. I think that really turned the tables for the whole team. After that loss where they gave up forty four points and turned it over a bazillion times and got embarrassed in buffalo. Well what i would tell you that. I don't recognize that game. We haven't seen the look like that and it's a game that i don't have any place in my brain for. He told us he didn't even have any space in his brain for that game. That's very important subjects right like the fact that he considered that not seahawks. Football was influential the rest of the year. Well the following week against the rams things. I guess only got worse. Wilson throws and the other one four darius williams second game. I know that there are better days ahead. I'll use a baseball now but sometimes you go up to the plate you know and you don't have your way today mike. You and our colleagues. Mike sando jason jank's wrote about a meeting. That happened shortly after that loss to the rams can you take us inside that meeting room and just explain what went down russia's meeting with the coaches normal game planning type of meeting and he has suggestions he is giving input usually does and his suggestions just weren't dismissed. There were dismissed in a way that russell didn't feel appreciate it. And i think that is really important. I'm sure they disagree in every meeting ever but in this particular instance rust belt that he was not being appreciated so rushed stormed out was basically this idea that. How dare anyone in this building. Be dismissive of my ideas. I am of the quarterback was almost like kevin durant warriors when he was like no way up. I'm kevin durant russell wilson and he rustled perceives him to be someone who has succeeded. In spite of what's been around him not because of running for his life making the pro bowl with battle lines perceive that to be like the story of his career. And you get to week eleven. And it's like do. Just chill out. We got this no. You don't don't get it. I got it and that forced him out the door. Russell in the second half of the season was which is not himself like he was twenty eighth in yards per attempt in his final eight games he was sixteenth. In a touchdown percentage nineteenth in passer rating. These are bad numbers. These are not just like below average twenty nine yards per attempt man that was lower than the cincinnati bengals. Even when the circumstances are bad around russell he's been good enough to elevate situation still played inefficient level and twenty twenty was the first time it was like. Wow he's not able to elevate the lack of talent or execution of preparation around him and it produced like some of the worst numbers of his career certainly produced the worst playoff game of his career against the rams in the wild round sitting meeting big. Who's going into other sack four sacks two takeaways the interception return for the touchdown and floyd now all right. Let's fast forward a few weeks to the super bowl. The seahawks have been knocked out by the rams in the wildcard round and russell. Wilson is at super bowl. Fifty five in tampa bay sitting with none other than commissioner. Roger goodell mike. Tell us what you found in your reporting about russell. Wilson's experience at the super bowl. You know it's really interesting. Because i tweeted during the super bowl. That antonio brown caught a touchdown from tom brady in front of russell. Wilson there is the pass for the touchdown. What drive a super bowl. Winning drive that brady's only done throughout his whole career. I kind of just said it like star cast the as a joke. Not really thinking about how russell fell and then as our reporting i was like okay so i i was right like he is really upset. And it's so many factors. There is the fact that tom brady is in. The super bowl is the fact tom. Brady's they're playing pine. A good line is the fact that tom brady is playing in a system. That gives him some atonomy like got to pick players gronk. Antonio brown is the fact that mahomes is there again laying for again in a system that like essentially like his talents. The last time also played in the super bowl loss of tom brady seven years later prime many years. Tom brady's back. I suppose in a soup. Kitchen fuming so during the superbowl. He's texting his quarterback coach. And just close. Friend jake heaps. He's a local radio guy. Here jake to set it on the radio. He's talking about how russ was missed during the game texting him. They'll look the he had was in reflective of the text messages. I was receiving russell wilson. Just ultimately the overall sentiment was that he was mad that he was not lying in this thing and then russell spoke to the shortly after the game show. What's up with our line. You see that. Winning requires a good line and the gist of peace response. As far as i was told is about faith. And just you know we got this. And that just wasn't good enough for us

Bill Barnwell Breaks Down NFL Quarterback Moves

"So bill. We gave you do the math a whole month away from this podcast before our dependency bio chemically kicked back in so i just hope the last four weeks have been everything that you personally needed. Pablo got on many vacations. I turned around my life after six months of just staying watching football now. Bill barn wells weekly column on. Espn plus and he hosts the bill. Barnwell show podcast realistically. I have done something that few human beings have accomplished. I managed to get one pack of moments from nba. top shot. yeah. We share that same addiction. You are far deeper into the game than me. I realized over the weekend. I just want there to be an nfl top shot. Because i feel like that's going to happen right. It has to. i mean. Imagine the things you could do. You could send somebody that colts fake punt from years ago or or if you wanted to try some of your friends. Perhaps you could send the russell wilson interception from the nfl top shot to a certain person with the initials m used to host the show. Yeah just randomly picking in that example in those initials absolutely but bill. We dragged you back here. Speaking of a certain quarterback who threw a certain interception emotionally terrorized ours. Because this is an especially dramatic. Nfl offseason. they're all these big name. Quarterbacks who want out of these relationships that seemed from a distance at least pretty broken and russell wilson and the seahawks. I need to ask you about that. I because i know russ isn't feeling respected by head coach. Pete carroll reporting. I know that carol wants to revoke all of his cooking privileges. We've heard now. Russell wilson like storming out of meetings which is kind of funny to imagine like door very lightly slamming so this particular soap opera. What is all of it. Feel like to you much ado about nothing really. I mean i just i. Just don't buy russell wilson drama. I go back to his contract. Negotiations this is the same player in the same agent. Who wants imply that he would leave football in the middle of these negotiations entering the final year of his deal to try professional baseball. Where russell wilson once for the iraqis and the organization he hit to twenty eight in the low minors before returning to college football. It was not a realistic threat. But if that way does he want the seahawks to give him more helpful on the offensive line which has been sort of the crux of his public complaints. Yeah i do believe that. And i think that the seahawks could benefit from giving him more help. They relied on russell wilson to run his way out of sacks and free pressures from unblock players which has worked for that stretch buddies also taken a ton of hits cuss russell. Wilson plays the way he plays. He is going to take a ton of sacks regardless of how good his protection is the best way honestly pablo to get him. Hitless frequently would be to run the ball more. Which is the exact thing. Russell wilson was trying to get the seahawks do lasso last offseason. So there is something here but i very much doubt that leads to a trade. My favorite thing about this new cycle i think is that russell wilson has relayed via his wrapped. Adam schefter that he is not demanding a trade but if he were there are these four specific teams that he'd like to go to the bears. The cowboys the saints. The raiders does any of that make sense to you know not at all i mean the classic russell wilson tropez that ciara was going to pick teams him in new york in los angeles which this is the opposite that list even the teams he chose are so strange. Maybe you'd argue that. He chose teams with great offensive. Lions triumph of the seahawks. But the trade doesn't really add up the same. Stu have agreed offensive line. But they're like sixty five million dollars over the salary cap. The cowboys have a great line. Whenever everyone's healthy but they also have back prescott. that's not gonna work either the bears. I don't understand. They don't have a great line or any cap space. That one makes no sense to me on either. Level the raiders. Maybe are the most interesting and plausible candidate of the bunch with a great line and some cap space to work with. But when i think about jon. Gruden as raiders coach. He wants quarterbacks to do exactly what jon gruden wants on every single play. I don't think any if it really adds up to meaningful trae dialogue. I don't think there's going to be a conversation between the seahawks and another team about trying to make a trade for russell wilson work but this is twenty twenty one anything is possible

The Creation Of The Magnificent Makers

"The griffis the author of the magnificent makers children's book series in the main characters violet and pablo are transported to an alternate world with awesome lab. We're talking robots cool bugs an anti gravity chamber there. They have to make their way through a maze by solving science based problems. Each challenge has three levels and they have one hundred and twenty maker minutes to make it through the maze. Otherwise they don't get the chance to come back. I didn't realize they didn't get the chance to come back. That's high state. Yeah yeah and these kids love science so they they have so much fun on these adventures but they have to be able to finish them in time if they wanna come back. Each book explores a different topic. There's one on brain biology one on sound. The one i liked best is about ecosystems in years one of my favorite parts of the magnificent makers as the reader you solve puzzles and riddles right alongside the characters and in each book. There's instructions on how to build something in that building or making was really important to the n. so science basically has two parts right kind of intellectual part where you're learning and you're thinking but then it has this very hands on part which is the doing so whether you're a biologist or an engineer or physicist you're usually making something like research is literally do and so. I felt that it was really important to kind of combine those two with these books right. They have you know kind of the sacks that the kids learn but then these activities that encourage the doing part of science as well. Yeah well. I think the way that science is taught in early. Education is often this memorization of facts. Stuff that other people have learned you know. And and you and i both know that sciences process set of rules to observe intestine problem solve. So was that really important to you in in the book. Yes definitely and it also shows kids you know. Just how fun science is. I think my favorite part of science is the doing being in the lab. Tinkering doing my experiments. You know seeing that positive result. It's just. There's really not something that i can compare it to in terms of that. Something that gives me that boost of adrenaline that science adrenaline talk about. So which character do you feel like you identify with the most. I'm gonna have to save violet. Foreshore little bit more of a daredevil. She's a little bit more of a kind of you know i'm going to do this. Nothing's going to stop me. You know pablo is a little bit more on the pragmatic side. He's a little bit more. Maybe i wouldn't say necessarily cautious but just you know he's the one that's always looking at his watch making sure that people are on time and making sure that you know that such a pablo making sure that they're getting through the maze. On-time environment is to reckless. But she's just a little bit more a little bit more carefree. And if i'm being perfectly honest with myself i definitely have a lot of pablo to right. That's what keeps me orderly. You know an organized you know. But i think my core and my essence has more of that like sco for it. Do it kind of side. Which is maybe how. I got into writing these books in the end right right sure. Well you know i noticed. So violent is a black girl who loves science and dreams of running her own lab one day. You're a neuroscientist as well as an author. And i'm wondering if in some ways this book was kind of like a little bit of a love letter to a younger you mo- currently most definitely not just a younger me. It's really a love letter to all kids who didn't necessarily see themselves in science rolls when they were growing up when they thought of a scientist they didn't picture someone who looked like them or came from where they came from or who had a unique feature that that's not what they were taught a scientist was and it's one hundred percent a love letter to my younger self as well as a love letter to. You know all the kids out there who just wanna do science and don't want to be told that they can't. Yeah i mean. I have to imagine it felt like good for the soul to write a children's book about kids of color who not only are engaged in science. But they're like really good at it cashing. Yes exactly because there's these concepts of what a scientist looks like in who is kind of naturally good at science. I think and someone you know who just kind of what they're born to do and that often does not include you know black and brown kids. I think black and brown kids are taught that we're strong where tough we can overcome. You know hardship which is which are all true things but we're also curious we're also creative. We're also excited about learning how the world works around us. You know and i wanted to really highlight that and i want to mention to that. I don't focus at least at this point in the series a lot on the kids races. I want that to just be a given you know. I don't want that necessarily that to be the topic of conversation per se. I just want them to be them to be care. Free to be out there doing love science and this. Isn't you know just for young kids of color to see. I think this is also important for white children to see the fact that there are kids of color who are also just carefree and doing science. I think representation matters for everyone. You know. it's not just important for young kids of color to see themselves. I think is important for all kids to see young kids of color you know doing science and kick him but at it. Y- yeah so. I kinda wanna talk a little bit about you in this process a little bit because you know when i was academia. There was definitely a hesitancy around putting a ton of time into outreach. Doing things that weren't quote real science. Were you worried at all. About what your peers might think of us spending time writing these books. Yes i mean yes and no. I've done outreach at museums with local libraries. And i've never felt pushback against those kind of activities but this is a little bit different because you know there. Are you know authors. Who are one hundred percent authors right and i am not a one hundred percent author. I'm also an active researcher. And so i was a little bit worried that it would be interpreted as me. You know just kind of taking on a new career and putting science on the back burner. And that's not what i aim to do. You know. I guess. That's the violet in me. I do both you know. I'm still going to be an active researcher. And i'm going to pursue these books actively because i think that they're both important you know as a black woman in science who is an academic science. I don't wanna leave this position. There aren't enough of us.

FIFA Launches 'FIFA Sound', a New Entertainment Strategy

"Today. Fee for announced the launch of fever sound entertainment strategy designed to enable soccer fans music lovers artists and players to make connections through sport and music. Sound is debuting an eight episode poker series co hosted by liam payne former member of the boy band one direction and sports broadcaster. jd dire. The fee for play on podcast aims to bring together the best soccer players with world's greatest musicians on the podcast and initiative born out of a partnership with universal music group for bad for brands hosts and guests will discuss monumental moments in their lives and music that inspired them during those periods of time. So that's that's the sort of the blurb and that's what fee are up to. Why are they doing this. Do you think sophie. we'll give it. Let's start with the what's happening here. Okay so i think. I think that they're starting to present themselves more than just a football brand. I think it's quite hard for a governing body to make that move into brand they can be seen as a sort of dry organizations so they're tapping into that crossover between music culture fashion in the same way that many players do and build themselves into a bigger brand in the clubs. They play for. I think that fee. I seen this opportunity to get more emotional connection using those other levers and a great way to do that or a great touch point is audio because it's proven to have that emotional engagement quality you know so great rates connect with people so that got universal thing and the celebrity thing and bringing together sports people with musicians and talking about staff on a deeper level is bringing fee for motor life as a brand. That's how i do agree with that. I think it's an attempt to do that. Which i. I'm not sure it as with all of these. Things will depend on the execution as to whether they're able to achieve it but i think sophie hit the nail on the head in terms of trying to branch out into other verticals to create an entertainment crossover Format aligning sports with music This is an ambition. Law of clubs and sports brands share Whether they're able to put it in a way that's relevant to fans Were remains to be seen but Let's hope the it is this new and rather gonna do it or are they doing it now. Doing better elsewhere. I don't i don't think trying to get into the football. Conversation is anything new It's just very difficult for official bodies particularly governing bodies to get into office space which is quite tip quite defined by authentic conversations. Authentic voices and try to and try to place themselves. They're in a way that is meaningful. So i think i think many will attempt to execute correctly. I'm not sure i agree. I think that not many have yet a they are thinking about it and i think some of the big big rightsholders around the world will be. We'll be looking to do this. But we haven't really seen any body executed properly or well yet but i think this conversation's going on in the background. We've certainly seen some big clubs around the world investing in their audio branding strategy lately. So people are. I acts and i think there'll be more of that. But in terms of podcasting in the way that fee for doing it. I don't think anybody else's done here. What's the point of an official club. Pocus what's the positioning. Do you think that again. I mean jolly mentioned there that there are other voices and there are lots of fan based club podcasts around and there's also mainstream media radio. Bbc lots of of other noise walk role. Can a club play in this space. Yeah it's an excellent point and it predates podcast as an it's It's the fact that there's an ongoing conversation and then there's there's certain things that clubs kennecott say and no no more obvious. Was this at the time also fan. Tv had a really big moment. A couple of years ago around Wanting to their fans willing to sack sacrifice in anger and that was getting huge engagement on youtube. Whereas and i i'm the club the that digital media team would have quite like some of the audience that robey. So we're guessing but they could never have produced content like that and nor should they So it being the official voice you have to place your advantages. You have to play to your strengths. And that is usually access to things that your average punter. Your average commentate a dozen have access to Which usually of goes back to the players and or other people within the club. Who have something interesting to say But yeah you you tend to be constrained somewhat by your ability to speak freely if you're the official voice And i think one simple example where that that slightly doesn't doesn't play true and and the good thing is Nfl media has a suite of podcasts. That all to kind of talk about the league and some do it through the lens of statistics and analysis. Some do it through the lens of a more jerky. And and kind of light-hearted kind of tone of voice but they're all officially sanctioned podcast. That's promote the sports in the league and The hosts have free rein to Form of a better word. Slag off coaches play is say someone should be dropped or sack of whatever and and you would never see that coming from official bodies in europe and i think but it's it's It's a it's a very interesting approach. And i think one that's been well executed

"Okay now for the halftime show the weekend put up seven million dollars of his own money to make it just how he wants. The also told the nfl network that despite rumors there will be no special guests. You've of course there are cova challenges. But how do you have ten performance will sack of. I'm like i. There's no special guests minded this time. Don't i just. I love the surprise of a special gas. Whatever justin timberlake did it. All by himself. I was so annoyed. Didn't have anybody you know why you were annoying. Because his music pet special guests you were thinking in sync moment. You were being in having all of those nostalgic. Don't have those that many collaborations that you're like. Oh my god. I can't wait for him to bring on x y and z. So i think the weekend is going to do. I heard that seven million is eight billion. He's gonna make a movie for everybody. At home superstars. No one who pitched seven eight million came and gave him a little piece of the money. Let's say it's worth it. But some hard you watching his press conference yesterday and he says like the whole performances boat basically going to be happening in the stands. He's not really going to do it. That much on the field so there'll be a little bit on the field but it's mostly somehow gonna be in the stands because for once you know there's not gonna be as many people right. You can actually get over there. So i'm excited for it. I think it's going to be great. Of course the cinematic experience seems very cool especially since we're all watching home. S are anyways. But that's cool. But i love an element of surprise. Be you know you never know there might be. Maybe just squashed that so everybody can be really surprised. Okay

Clinicians fear NFL's concussion settlement program protocols discriminate against Black players

"Tonight. Just days away for football's biggest night. The abc news investigation shining a different light on the nfl to black former players. Memory loss and bellsa bangor all symptoms associated with dementia related illnesses which henry believes stem from repeated blows to the head. Football doesn't give you an expiration date. You just expire both ankles. Both knees both elbows both rhys. All my fingers been broken. I've had ten concussions or more. I've had lee seventeen surgeries seventeen. And i'm still getting them. Critics say the practice widely known as race. Norman makes it harder for black players to qualify for compensation the league caused the lawsuit entirely misguided. I just want to be looked at the same way as a white guy. We bust chops together bro. It wasn't white or black team. We lost together. We won together for henry growing up in small town mississippi. The nfl was his ticket to success after attending mississippi state university he was drafted in nineteen ninety-three by the pittsburgh. What was it like the play in the nfl. It was hard man. i ain't even lie. It was easier to get there in the state there. You have to do whatever it takes to stay healthy and still nephew henry in there for the injured ray sales. That's a good clean. Henry played for eight seasons making fourteen career sacks even going on to play in super bowl thirty but at the age of thirty three. The bright lights of the stadium and the roar of the crowds came to an end and like many other former players. Henry struggled in retirement. Battling what he suspected where the long term effects of the concussions. He sustained on the field. I get a lot of headaches every morning. I have a headache is just a number of things. Man that that that A player goes through man after football. Football this is not fun is not fun. Who live by it's horrible. It's just sad to see. Is his breaks my heart. It really does unable to work and concerned about his family's financial future henry and his wife turn to the landmark two thousand thirteen nfl concussion settlement program which paid eligible former nfl players suffering from the lingering effects of multiple head injuries. In two thousand seventeen. Henry went into get a battery of tests to measure as cognitive functioning assessing language learning. And memory this doctor said that he believes there there is something going on and he was gonna turn report in. He was saying in so many words like his life. There is something wrong. A doctor determined that henry was suffering from cognitive decline consistent with mild dementia. And it's part of the process submitted a claim to a settlement administrator. What was the result of the claiming file. I was denied. The administrator rejected. Henry's claim questioning whether his performance on the tests were valid and asserting that the doctor quote used inappropriate norms. Henry's docker did not use that race warming adjustment. we're to function in our daily lives like normal human beings without any disruption and not become conceited. For two years later henry says with health worsening. He went in for another evaluation with a neuropsychologist. This clinician used that. Nfl recommended formula. That took into account among other things. Henry's and this time. The neuropsychologist found that henry didn't qualify at all. Every time the ball snapped is a car crash for me. And there's no white black thing and that they'll hit me less because on black or hard because i'm black. It's the same thing

"Meena. Hello pablo hello is an nfl analyst for espn and the host of the meantime show featuring lenny so i need to know where you are on the football excitement alerts scale right now because i for a true tape grinder like yourself conference championship. Sunday is in some ways. Maybe even better than the super bowl if the football excitement scale as you call. It was one through ten conference championships. Sunday's about fifteen for me. There's know maybe about whether or not it's more exciting than the super bowl. Pablo it absolutely is. This is my favorite sunday of the year and in part because by the time we get to the super bowl we've talked about same matchups over and over and it's usually like. How many times can we say what you guys rush brady with four. You know before and of course always been in the super bowl the last decade or so. That's a phrase. I've said a lot inventive. You say that. I was going to say you're the person i i would really make that a me. I mean it's true but it's also more fun when you get to talk about other things and this particular set of games. It's really the best possible combination of teams in my opinion. There's a reason why the lions in vegas are very close because it actually looks like a pretty well matched pair of games. I wanna start with buccaneers packers. Meena because this was not a close game when these two teams played back. In october roggio touchdown tampa bay fire the cannons the bucks and thirty seven rogers was abysmal. In that game through zero touchdowns he threw two. picks completed. Completed doesn't half passes in tampa bay when they played each other. The first time and tampa bay destroyed perhaps not coincidentally green bay. Thirty eight to ten. So how did that blowout happened. Well this is. It was such a strange game. Pablo because aaron rodgers has had this incredible season which. I'm sure we'll talk about this. Is the one real blemish on his staff third drops better pass picked off the other side. By two thousand fifteen touchdown touchdown booker. He stunk i. There's no really nice way to put it. Now he stunk in part because the offensive line in green bay which has been spectacular. One of the best football year got beat up. Front rodgers was sacked six times pressured twenty one times. I mean no most of the time this series look cool as a cucumber back there but this was not the case and as mentioned had these very surprising interceptions coming from him. I think he finished the game with a passer rating of like thirty five. Okay so really. It was all about the buccaneers. Pass rush beating green bay upfront and aaron rodgers being uncomfortable as a result and that was also reflected in the running game. aaron jones had just ten carries. He averaged like one point. Five yards per rush again. Very dissimilar from the rest of the season. But you saw what could or should i. If in the eyes of tampa bay be the formula for beating green bay which is if you can stop the running game and keep the packers from executing their play action passing attack which flows from that and get them into third down and get pressure on rogers and obvious passing situations. That's your best chance of beating now. All those things i just said barry. Few teams in the nfl been able to do that but tampa was able to do that the last time. These two teams that so many things obviously have changed since then as you alluded to. That was back in week. Six when that game happened. So in what you've seen since then who's been better this year. Aaron rodgers tom brady. Aaron rodgers is undeniably. Been the better quarterback this year and he is my pick by the way for. Mvp it's between him. And patrick mahomes. It's close but rodgers is that an unreal season. I mean just statistically he's been first and qbr brady was tenth. He ranks third in yards per temporary. He was eleventh forty eight touchdowns brady at forty. He only through five pigs brady threw twelve. You get the idea. So while tom brady is the most complex quarterback of all time i believe. Aaron rodgers is the most talented. Patrick mahomes is kind of them. A run for that. And when these two goats meat i don't know where goat's meat in a field a meadow anyway to meet makes me sort of hungary. Honestly that phrase oud took it there. I guess goats will be hurting in green bay this weekend but the goat whose homefield it is home meadow. It is has been the better one this weekend. That's metaphor really. Just got out of control.

Jim's Recovery Story

"I was born in a little town in virginia in an average religious home. My father a negro was a country physician. I remember in my early youth. My mother dress me just as she did. My two sisters. And i wore curls. Until i was six years of age at that time i started school. And that's how i got rid of the curls. I found that. Even then i had fears and inhibitions we live just a few doors from the first baptist church and when they had funerals i remember very often asking my mother whether the person was good or bad and whether they were going to heaven or hell i was about six then. My mother had been recently converted and actually had become a religious fanatic. That was her main neurotic manifestation. She was very possessive with us. Children another thing. That mother drilled me was a very puritanical point of view as to sex relations and as to motherhood and womanhood. I'm sure my ideas as to what life should be like. We're quite different from that. Of the average person with whom i associated later on in life that took its toll. I realized that now about this time an incident took place in grade school that i have never forgotten because it made me realize that i was actually a physical coward during recess. We were playing basketball. And i had accidentally trip to fellow just little larger than i was. He took the basketball and smashed me in the face with it. That was enough provocation to fight. But i didn't fight and i realized after recess. Why didn't it was fear that hurt and disturbed me a great deal. Mother was of the old school and figure that anyone. I associated with should be of the proper type of course in my day. Times had changed. She just hadn't changed with them. I don't know whether it was right or wrong but at least i know that people weren't thinking the same. We weren't even permitted to play cards in our home. But father would give us just a little tidy with whiskey and sugar and warm water now and then. We had no whiskey in the house. Other than my father's private stock. I've never seen him drunk in my life although he'd take a shot in the morning and usually one in the evening and so did i but for the most part. He kept his whiskey in his office. The only time. I have ever seen my mother take anything. Alcoholic was around christmas time when she would drink some eggnog or light wine. I remember my first year in high school. That mother suggested that. I do not join the cadet unit. She got a medical certificate. So that i should not have to join it. I don't know whether she was a pacifist. Or whether she just thought that in the event of another war it would have some bearing on my joining up about then too. I realized that my point of view on the opposite sex wasn't entirely like that of most to the boys. I knew for that reason. I believe i married at a much younger age than i would have had not been for my home training. My wife and i have been married for some thirty years. Now was the first girl that i ever took out. I had quite a heartache about her then because she wasn't the type of girl that my mother wanted me to marry in the first place she had been married before. I was her second husband. My mother resented it so that the first christmas after our marriage which was in may of nineteen twenty-three. She didn't even invite us to dinner. After our first child came my parents both became allies. But in later days after i became an alcoholic they both turned against me. My father had come out of the south and had suffered a great deal down there. He wanted to give me the very best and he thought that nothing but being a doctor would suffice on the other hand. I believe that. I've always been medically inclined though i have never been able to see medicine quite as the average person sees it. I do surgery because that's something that you can see. It's more tangible. But i can remember and postgraduate days and during internship that very often i'd go to the patient's bed and start a process of elimination and then very often i'd wind up guessing. That wasn't the way it was with my father. I think with him. It possibly was a gift. Intuitive diagnosis father through the years had built up a very good mail order business. Because at that time there wasn't too much money in medicine. I don't think. I suffered too much as far as the racial situation was concerned because i was born into it and knew nothing other than that. A man wasn't actually mistreated. Though if he was he could only resent it. He could do nothing about it on the other hand. I got quite a different picture. Farther south economic conditions had a great deal to do with it. Because i've often heard my father say that his mother would take one of the old time flour sacks and cut a hole through the bottom and two corners of it and they're you'd have a gown of course when father finally came to virginia to work his way through school. He resented the southern cracker as he often called them so much that he didn't even go back to his mother's funeral. He said he never wanted to set foot in the deep south again and he didn't i went to elementary and high school in washington. Dc and then to howard university. My internship was in washington. I never had too much trouble in school. i was able to get my workout. All my troubles arose. When i was thrown socially among groups of people as far as school was concerned i made fair grades throughout. This was around. Nineteen thirty five and it was about this time that i actually started drinking during the years. Nineteen thirty to nineteen thirty five due to the depression and its aftermath. Business went from bad to worse. I had my own medical practice in washington at that time but the practice slackened and the mail order business started to fall off

"License of the game and that like third now. He wanted to treble last season. He wants to be champions league final. Don't go with that thing that well you have to do it in france and so on this that because another discussion are having people just about the results but when it comes to people like talk they tend to forget that augments the team in front sales the best players every year. It's always fringe players leaving the french league and yet psg sitting third in the fringe league. And that's okay. You think not so. I'm not here you talking about the champions league final you chocolate. The strangest champions league competition ever really end up playing atlanta atlanta the late sheikh who washed team mobile and they got beat by a proper team by them and the football was not being. I don't know whether he's a great coach. Rino coach the team has been good to watch. And if you spend the money they are then not only have to win. Be have to a product on the field as well and as i don't think so after after you play liverpool state. You have to know that money can't buy your loved. I one of the biggest jobs that the leaders. He's the leader job. He's done his is that's been his biggest challenge. There's a lot of selfish individuals that would is hard to put together the wet times. I agree with you. Guys that have been times have looked well. But i think that in the champions league campaign also knocked out borussia. Dan did episode well to put that together as a team on. And we can talk about all the money bringing all the players and we can decide who bring in play. Were also political reasons. But but i don't agree that it's so easy to go under page and forget all the political stuff around him because we're neymar ball from barcelona to psg is not about football. This is a political thing is a nation thing. Tv right thing is a lot of things. I'm not saying that. Psg is about go by love that bob is great club. It doesn't do without. But i also say to talk is a very good coach. Who have you have. You can't stay up on the train and field and forget all wheel. The nonsense that goes on in the club and the building. Then you're in the wrong place. How are we going to walk around for twenty four hours a day thinking about what in abode. You can't do that as a coach as the guy in charge. Should you walk on that train of field. The only thing that miles and the only thing. You should be concentrating on what's going on there. You can't count all that stuff around. We are otherwise otherwise mentally you collapse but the problem is if you are a horse if you're not poll horse hold your army. You need people around you who also that you know that support. I'm not saying that didn't support him. But but steve if you go on the page and you don't think you have that this report that then it's hard not just forget and i think that football has developed into this. I mean one of the reasons. I think that trump is doing so well. Livable not always great coach. But he's also got a great team in and around him. And i think that that's going to be a the biggest challenge comes in a in a big club that psg even at by on his is hard. Because you've got a lot of of strong personalities in and around the globe and i agree with you. If you can't take the heat get blah blah blah out of the get a kick out of the kitchen. I on but that is a part of the game. Joe's obviously we're hearing reports richer portrait. Seen will be the man's come in and take charge is somewhat of a poison challenge considering the coaches that have already been gone. Psg other things. So i think he takes the boxes it was between him in real good motel was also mentioned in the last two weeks the thing with with the in ways very different mental into personality and collected and two to hor. He's not he's not made of the same would he's not made for. Those context appears with the politics and all inferences and what yon and stevie of just debated prototypical played for that club. He was tending club. He knows exactly. And i think he's more he's mindset is very different to to just wants to be a coach. That's sort of like it's coaching being on the pitch and trying to make this players play the where he wants. That was always going to be difficult in paris. I think pacino. We'll have a better hold of. The law of things are declared it also be choosing by by leonardo da relationship between sports in our and managers who so important in more than football much much healthier than the one between now. Those already is a much better. Start and a much better points. So i think he ticks all the boxes. Nothing is with like him. He looks very different to two to. He's got different identity in philosophy. Certainly more verticality appropriate entity in what he's trying to play compared to what we've seen with thomas to hold in the last two years. Is it not great. Stevie the one thing. We always through a protein as an upgrade while olympian upgrade f port. You tino sits down and what he should be doing. The opposite. seems thomas tickled didn't do thomas. Can we get the job done. Startling sharon yourself with the right people. Well if that's not part of the deal don't take the job the job and then complain the team that you wanted or needed so straight off the bar. That's what poetry tino has to as you got the skills as a coach. Absolutely suppose police greek football some great football yes. The the didn't get over that final hub dole which point you were taken this job. He hostile over the final hurdle young. Does this work for you. Well there's another south americans at the club. And i agree as also that he's coming from another background..

"Inside the shooting game, and so they they had this very clearly coordinated effort to give people a discount for buying it on their site to they could go around thirty percent. I don't completely understand it but they caused a change to happen within the game that shipped because apparently games have an ability to update their guts in a way that other things don't. Was Correct Sephardi. Yes, and then they got they basically. Created, a little honeypot. They knew where they knew apple would be pissed off and throw them off the store and they were so ready for that that they had. In less than a day, they had a pretty on the news video about nine, hundred, eighty, four, nine, and these. Apple and Google just just totally you know. Out of the blue. It's what's your take you follow this stuff more than I do what's side? Are you on boys like what was going on here at there's there's no sides it's two. Billion Dollar Company. Oh well, sorry bill. I just saw that and I was like, oh That's a lot of money. there. Jeff Basil's Oh. I mean my my my take is it's sucks for. All consumers that's I didn't actually think we're going to do this. It sucks. We'll also there's there's so much. Part of the thing is like like Jason said and like I think a lot of people say I liked it the APP store. That's the stuff that's going in there I wish they vetted more. I. Wish I didn't need something like Guardian to be making sure that people aren't. We juice all the time like I. Don't like the stuff that gets on the serpent. It's good that they do what they do. I think part of the problem part of the confusion and part of the. Injustice unfairness are all these different different rules for different kinds of APPS for different kinds of companies, and then on top of that, some kind of parent sweetheart deal if you're APP is as big as net flicks or if you're a quote unquote reader APP, whatever that means there's all these ways we're like anybody I mean Jason Nailed it to me, which was the example that. Most nails it for me is. I don't recall comics anywhere like I used to. I. Barely read comics at all but you know five years ago when my kids were like living in the world of marvel. When they morning, she come in bed lights off we cuddle. She'd have her hot milk and we'd read whatever had arrived that morning, and then sometimes, I'd want to buy something right off about the college and then at one point they said Oh hey, by the way. Here's an for reading your comic. Sala. G Comics. And you're like, okay. Well, how do I buy my comics comics and they return? No because you're not easily implicit or explicit gag order you're not even allowed to talk about how you get content on your phone. If you'RE NOT GONNA pony up the thirty percent, you can't have links. You can have explanations rate isn't that that's all strictly verboten, right? Yeah. Well, at least for little companies because suddenly like Amazon. One. Hundred. So you can use the Amazon APP to by Amazon products. Can you buy kindle on the Amazon on the Amazon? Like a APP I. Don't think you can't do you cannot, but you have to go to the web correct but you can't let like they now have the sweetheart deal where you can link to the those books and for some reason though that is a that's a pretty sweet solution. Yeah Woohoo. But now audible credits you can buy an Ios I. It's very hato Credit I. Still Understand I've never quite figured out how where, why win money gets spent on my playstation especially, it's super confusing to me because like you have to you have to go buy Bitcoin for it right you can't just it's really weird about how it processes money, but but the point being that I. I. Think the problem is yes hostility toward the consumer it's a bad consumer experience to not let people be able to. Buy Content for content driven device. On the on the this huge popular mobile platform. But also I think there's a case to be made the inconsistency of how those rules are applied is really lame to everybody. Yes. Including consumers but you know I. It's sort of like I do tend to who I side with. It matters not aside but but you know I was Gonna fix their shit man they're going to get. They're going to get the you do not want to be. Nineteen ninety-six Microsoft today yeah, it feels like that and it's super weird and I haven't listened to upgrade yet because I I subscribe to upgrade plus. But then it just stopped showing up and I don't know who to ask. So Mr Mr Mr Jason Mr Mike Please help me what for the plus you go to your member full accounting there's a pulled on menu to subscribe there it's very confusing I've said so. Well I. I also paid for a few shows twice and they're all. Oh, thank you for your service. The nobody I've had a bunch of people but not on purpose. This could be a whole separate like bit because they're trying hard. They're doing the best camp, but it's confusing that there are technically at least two different ways that you can support the shows in the network. and. You get some of the shows in this feed and some of the other shows in that feed. and. It's also very confusing to me that like our previous annual member episodes with for example, you or todd are not in the new member feed their in the other member feed, and that's a separate purchase just simply pay a separate fee and it's very confusing to people. Yeah and I don't really think that this is Mr. Mike or Mr Stevens fault it's it's I mean they're they're doing the best they can with the tools are available and they suck. And they're so response honestly Mike and what do you say? Michael. Stevens agreed to what you have a current relay show. I note no comment but there's something coming. Cool coming in September I'm very excited about it. Okay You you're having another we one for four or five episodes. Did you okay here Let's talk about this in the after show I'm going to put it in. Okay. After show notes, where would people be able to listen to the after show? You know if you're spending money on relay shows, you might as well go to give us give us your.

I think to show a little bit more common sense in. This is not something I would do. He would be criticized for it on whatever criticism comes as we. He's he's asked for it. If you ask me. I initially thought they will not my up in a preconceived flag which would have been stupid. That's why I was saying very very childish. Leslie it's been dragged out the crow then fair enough but it's just qualified to the. Somebody's grab that the given. No not maybe not. Maybe wasn't this address. But you know it's I am always enjoying. Shell Komo from the coaching staff well. Regardless regardless of of Wade come from he's going to be heavily criticized for it to Madrid and rightly really show. I think if you're prepared to do this on the pitch with this flag and have a laugh you've got to be prepared for the criticism. That comes your way. I'm sure he's the blue in the press conference before the game. He said much prefer playing for Wales than I do. Somebody's made the fly. Go which wind. Maybe isn't the take the qualified. Use these trainings. Where why kick your employees once again? Hundreds of millions of year rose is quoted in the Champions League trophies. It just seems completely unnecessary whole. "Be able to report. And by the way, they also do a lot of work for the national weather service, and in reporting, you do need, it's not just the radar but you do need people spotting those tornados to, you know, to know exactly what you're dealing with. And so those spotters very intriguing thing to be aware of, of actually been out with a couple of spotters or over the years. And it was it was. It was pretty frightening. Because we, we knew at that point that a funnel cloud was about two or he knew this guy that I went out with he knew this funnel, cloud was about to start or was about to form. I mean he could see almost like he could feel like it was intuition. But sure enough, it did, right? Over just northwest of where we were probably a couple of miles that looked like it was right over us. And and couple years ago. In my parents on town couple of hours away from here. We stepped out after a tornado warning we stepped outside after the sirens that stopped, and we, we came outside, and, and we looked as soon as we looked up. My parents live in a call to sack as soon as we look up. There's a funnel cloud. And we ran back inside. And as soon as we got to the front door to go back inside the sirens, went off again. Yeah. The closest to my home. I remember that there was a tornado heading probably about seventy miles from my house, and they were saying, you know, it's heading in that direction. Yeah. And I remember looking out during the day, and I looked up you could see I didn't see any funnel cloud, but I could see the rotation. Right. The rotation. Apparently, it went up when right over my neighborhood and dropped about five six miles down the other side and continued. Yeah. And that was like, whoa, but you, you see the clouds hanging down. I'm like do. I see. Okay, don't see rotation. But it it is, when you see those clouds that, you know, the potential of doing it, that's a pretty tense moment, especially when you're sitting in your house. Yeah. Standing underneath one as its forming is about as frightening as it gets. Eight six six ninety redeye. For your calls. Eight six six ninety redeye on Red Eye Radio..

"Sack and Amy are whether it's in Columbus, Ohio. Hey, guys. How are you? Good. How are you? Better than I deserve welcome. So your hair to do your debt free. Scream screen says, right awesomeness. How much have you paid off? One hundred and forty four thousand way to go. How long did this take at forty nine months? Wow. And your range of income during that time we started at one hundred and two and now it's one hundred eighteen good. What are you guys do for a living? I'm a physical therapist and musician and arts education director for nonprofit, very cool. So what kind of debt was the one hundred and forty four thousand dollars the majority of it was undergrad and graduate school loans, a car, and then some just a small credit card. Okay. So how long have you two been married? And a half years. Yeah. Oh, wow. So you were working on this part of marriage. Both of you. Right. Right. Yeah. So what happened is we got together? And I had a mentor that when I was in college had turned me onto you in the show. And I knew that it was something that as soon as I started generating income I wanted to do, and then I got with Amy, and we knew we wanted to start a life together. And and we'd seen enough marriages fail because of money and knew that we didn't want ours too. So we got on a budget, first and foremost started down the baby steps separately. And then when we got engaged we started looking at what would what would happen if we combined our debt snowball, and then slowly got more serious than there. And and tackled it. Wow. Very cool. Good for you, guys. And then you get married and really lean in and push it through right? Very good. So what do you tell people the key to getting out of debt is you paid off one hundred and forty four thousand that's impressive. Yeah. I say the biggest thing is is especially for people our age in early twenties. Mid twenties is get a budget just to have it on paper. You know, we have a lot of friends that make steady and then not steady income, and it doesn't matter. It has to be on paper for you to get started. And then we could then only from there can you start talking about the debt and how to make a plan for the future. Very cool. What was the hardest part for you. Amy. Well, there were two that came up once we got together and moved into gather to upgrade our space, so bigger apartments and each time. We we really wanted to upgrade the space, but deep down we knew, you know, one we really don't need it and financially. It was going to set us back on.

"Break we'll start with you on this one what do you think the celtics game plan should be cut off that of the snake lebron or showed off his help well lebron is going to dominate like he did in the first two rounds indiana had a chance because lebron supporting cast did not play great if you look at the last round though in a four game series jr smith kyle korver twenty or thirty eight on threes if they show like that cleveland is going to win kevin love the last three games of the series average twenty five points to me it's about that supporting cast because we know what we're going to get from the bronx maybe well to me it's still about lebron james frank i mean you've got to be able to control him and stop him from going nuts this guy's avidan thirty four nine and nine in this postseason shooting fifty five percent from the from the field that's unbelievable you can't allow him just to be crazy and not only that if you've got a close game in the fourth quarter who do they look to to bail them out look to lebron james scored ninety points and ten fourth quarter so far this year tops in the postseason you got to control them somehow someway and and i don't think you can you want to control him some but i think it's really about the other guys brad stevens is very big on defending the three that's what they did against philadelphia they let a bead gets points and get some one on shots but they didn't want to get killed by threes you don't wanna let love korver and smith get going in the first round those guys didn't get going and cleveland almost lost in the last round love got twenty a night the the celtics can't live with that bill plachy i'm guessing brad stevens was going to do what the wing case he couldn't do he's going to scheme him he's going to try to stop the other players let the brian do his thing but get on kevin love and get on gerald smith and use us the two markets as marcus morris marcus smart to get physical with the cats i think boston can win this series and brad stevens is a big reason why for a guy solely agree with that.
