Paul Kengor and Sebastian Discuss the Latest Out of Ukraine

"Paul, you mentioned the war in Ukraine. The latest piece you sent me from the spectator has to do with the saber rattling, the rusty saber rattling of Vladimir Putin Putin's nuclear itch concerning some very, very disturbing statements he has made. Talk to us about this former KGB kernel and what's happened in the last year with regard to the Kremlin and their master plan for domination in Eastern Europe. Well, he's increasingly been talking about nuclear weapons. And I've noticed this going back almost a year now. So his invasion of the Ukraine is now about, I guess, maybe 13, 14 months old. So I followed his nuclear rhetoric, very carefully. It's very disturbing. The different things that he's been saying. And I felt all along that the more desperate that this guy gets and the more that the Russians lose on the ground in the Ukraine, which they will because the Russians always get their butts kicked in military battles. I mean, people saying all the time. Could you believe that Ukrainians are repelling the Russians? Oh, yeah. I mean, the only time the Russians ever pull anything off is thanks to the Russian winner when they're invaded. Right, Napoleon 1812, Hitler, the drop in temperature and the mud, right? Yeah, that's exactly right. And by sheer numbers, the losing 20, 30 million people in World War II. You take the U.S. and the UK combined in World War II. We lost like what? 607 100,000 combined. Multiply that by like 30 or 40 and you're getting to what the Soviets lost in World War II. It's relatively easy to win when you have no regard for human life and you've got a lot of people to just kind of throw into the minefield.

"There were times earlier <Speech_Male> in his career where <Silence> he <Speech_Male> would pass up <Speech_Male> opportunities and it <Speech_Male> was such a point of <Speech_Male> frustration for him because <Speech_Male> he knew that he could <Speech_Male> have a greater impact <Speech_Male> if he could finally use <Speech_Male> that shot <Speech_Male> to keep teams honest <Speech_Male> because they weren't pressuring <Speech_Male> him very much. All <Speech_Male> right, well, you know, <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> shoot at Yale <Speech_Male> proved to us that <Speech_Male> you're finally going to shoot the <Speech_Male> puck and it took away the flags <Speech_Male> finally dalin has <Speech_Male> learned not only how to <Silence> how <Speech_Male> to utilize that shot. <Speech_Male> He's made a stronger, <Speech_Male> but he's also <Speech_Male> he's manipulated <Speech_Male> defenders and <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> he baits them into <Speech_Male> bad decisions. <Speech_Male> And that creates <Speech_Male> opportunities for <Speech_Male> guys on the flanks on the <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> power play creates <Speech_Male> opportunities to really create <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> <Speech_Male> more time and space <Speech_Male> on the offensive zone. I <Speech_Male> think for him in particular, <Speech_Male> it's the <Speech_Male> defensive system <Speech_Male> for this team that is <Speech_Male> unleashed his <Speech_Male> skill. He is <Speech_Male> much more confident <Speech_Male> with the way the Don Granada <Speech_Male> wants this team <Speech_Male> to defend. He doesn't want <Speech_Male> them chasing checks. <Silence> Although <Speech_Male> there are some people in <Speech_Male> the market here in Buffalo who <Speech_Male> want to see finisher <Speech_Male> check finish your check <Speech_Male> finish your check. I <Speech_Male> understand that, <Speech_Male> but doll girl doesn't want <Speech_Male> those guys to get out of position. <Speech_Male> You chase your check, <Speech_Male> then <Speech_Male> you have a potential ordering <Speech_Male> rush the other way. You <Speech_Male> have the numbers against <Speech_Male> you, and that <Speech_Male> situation. You want to <Speech_Male> be on the right side of the puck. <Speech_Male> And <Speech_Male> Dolly in that fits perfectly <Speech_Male> with the way that he <Speech_Male> wants a fat. He <Speech_Male> doesn't man to <Speech_Male> man is the way that housley <Speech_Male> had this team play. <Speech_Male> They didn't have the personnel <Speech_Male> to do it, and it could <Speech_Male> be confidence crushing <Speech_Male> when <Speech_Male> you feel like you're chasing <Speech_Male> the game the entire <Speech_Male> time Ralph Kruger wanted <Speech_Male> them. While you're <Speech_Male> asked for Dolly to be Rasmus <Speech_Male> wrist align it. <Speech_Male> Which <Speech_Male> of course isn't the <Speech_Male> best model. Let us know <Speech_Male> if that's a sentence. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> But <Speech_Male> that's the reality, right? <Speech_Male> So <Speech_Male> now the dalin <Speech_Male> understands that <Speech_Male> he can use his <Speech_Male> skill set to <Speech_Male> defend without <Speech_Male> having to be <Silence> <Speech_Male> a different type of <Speech_Male> player. I think Ralph <Speech_Male> Kruger wanted Dali <Speech_Male> to be <Speech_Male> 45 pounds <Speech_Male> heavier and be able to <Speech_Male> lay a big head and <Speech_Male> just be <Speech_Male> more of that stay at home <Speech_Male> guy. You <Speech_Male> don't have to be that. <Speech_Male> You know, you can <Speech_Male> defend extremely <Speech_Male> well while <Speech_Male> also having <Speech_Male> the ability <Silence> to be <Speech_Male> the defenseman that <Speech_Male> you can possibly be. <Speech_Male> And I think that <Speech_Male> that is that <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> the knowledge <Speech_Male> of knowing, hey, <Speech_Male> I can kill <Speech_Male> this play <Speech_Male> without <Speech_Male> putting myself out of <Speech_Male> position <Speech_Male> to make <Speech_Male> a play with the puck once I get <Speech_Male> it back. <Speech_Male> That's unleashed <Silence> all <Speech_Male> the confidence and all <Speech_Male> of the skill that we're <Speech_Male> seeing out of him <Speech_Male> today. <Speech_Male> That's really well <Speech_Male> said headlines. "It just been, it's been for like a better way of putting it magical at the time, so what they're able to create on the ice and just create so many opportunities, you know, in the offensive zone on the Raj, it's which made this team so dangerous, right? And the zone entries is another thing that controlled zone entries the way that he can take the puck across the blue line to get them in and even against the most difficult defensive teams in the league to face. They've had just had the puck more often. And the impact on the fort check. You know, when you have that guy who's able to create space and you have a goal scorer like cage, it's a recipe for disaster for sure. Well, I haven't checked this recently, but I believe the last time I looked, they were like, if not number one, top three in the league at both creating off the Russia team and also the amount of times they enter the puck enter the zone with possession of the puck like they're a team that does it really dump the puck in even in the fourth line now where you have paid and crabs kind of anchoring that unit like they're still able to play with a certain level of skill. And I think that's a big part of this as well where you're trying to kind of establish that identity and be a skilled high octane offensive team. Those habits and that process is a huge part of this. And then that leads into Granado and the system and the impact he's had on that as well where it's one thing to have the players and other thing to put them in a position to succeed by playing to that skill. And the key there is the breakouts, right? Yes. You need to get your forwards in the right spot to be able to enter the to enter the zone of the way in which they are. And this really, the transformation for this team at 5 on 5, all started in my opinion when Matthias Danielson finally joins them last January and gives Dali that responsible defense a presence that allows Dali to play his game. Right? And not only is Matthias samuelsson that responsible guy on the back end, but he can also he can launch the he can really spark your breakout with what he's able to do with the puck at that size. That is why the sabers gave him that 7 year contract. I know it was a head scratcher for some on the outside, but the guy is just a perfect fit for the way that they want to play. Then, of course, that is also a strength of yoki Ari. We know it's a strength of old and power. And the 5 one 5 offense for this team is something that it's been a long time developing since grotto took over. It was very rough at times last year, of course. And a lot of that was personnel. They didn't have Jacqueline JJ Picard, Peyton krebs, was still finding his way in the league, and now hey, Casey metal stad was banged, Victor Olson has had his 5 on thrive struggles now. They know how they have to play. They know how to enter the parking lots on it. I think Dylan cousins another guy on this team that is extremely good at controlled zone and truth.

"And it's very encouraging that we've seen the game winner in overtime against the stars, for example, is a perfect encapsulation of this where he's starting to use his shot as a leverage point to create as a passer as well and kind of use that attention, right? And so just the way he took that attention from the stars on that play and even Jake gottinger who had committed so much to him as a shooter and then dished it off beautifully to empower for an easy tap in. Those types of plays are going to help open up so much more for them and then adding a guy like Meyer for example would clearly help alleviate some of that pressure, but just seeing he's still going to have some of those roadblocks throughout the year, but I'm really curious to see how he continues to combat against them and how his game as a creator and as a playmaker continues to evolve because the shot is obviously brilliant, but I think there's even more playmaking potential that page is kind of starting to show a little bit that I think will come along the way as well. I absolutely agree with you. We've seen young centers in this league, that is one of the layers they need to add to their game is how do you use your linemates? How do you make your linemates better? How do you use the attraction that you're drawing from the opponent to create opportunities for the other guys who are on the ice with? For tage Thompson though, he's doing this he's doing this at 25 years old. It's only a second season playing sound in the NHL, which is just, well, for the second time playing second year playing center at any level since junior, yellow since the program. So he's still adding layers to his game. And the adjustments that he's showing, you know, there are times where you're seeing him still try to beat guys one on one, which was what tage Thompson did earlier in his career. He could do it. When he does it, it looks like Mario Lemieux. It looks a little when he's able to pull it off. You are always the one who is putting the clubs out there for people to wow over. So you can't blame the guy for doing it. But the way that he's adjusting game to game and he's still, you know, you look at how unique he is in terms of just the size. The size, the size skill package that he has, and he stole learning how to use his body. At that size, you know, as the season goes along, we know now that he's been playing through a little bit of Muslim bums and bruises, upper body injury that might keep him out of the game. Wednesday night against Carolina, so the fact that he's still able to have that play making element. I think a big piece of that as well is just Jeff skinner and Alex talk, how good those two have been this season and how they've worked so well with tage Thompson to create opportunities. The big pieces for the sabers is those other two talking and scanner need to start just shooting the puck more and knowing when not to defer to tage Thompson because it can be very, very tempting to pass the block to that guy, I'm sure. Yeah, tayshia's intoxicating.

"On Mike's website on hockey biz and you pull up zero one powers, shot your when he's on the ice, and it's a work of art, like it needs to be just like hanging in a museum somewhere because it's just a red blob in between the two circles and no shots from anywhere else, and that's why we were told we spent 20 minutes talking about why it would power is such an offensive Maestro. And so you add Timo Meyer who I believe is second in the league. You can 5 on 5 high danger attempts, lives around the net. As the trigger man, I know a lot of those shots, it's highly intriguing. And the power play, I think factors in here as well, because I think a lot of damage would be on at 5 one 5 in terms of helping this team, but they're scoring a lot on the power play right now. I'm curious for your take on this because there's this debate on whether they expected goal models are undervaluing the Sabres power play a little bit because they have high end shooters taking a lot of these shots and that's probably not factored into, all right, one shot from tage Thompson from that flag is not equivalent to a shot from any generic shooter. And so the expected goals models aren't properly calibrating for that. But they're scoring a lot of goals. They're also like bottom 5 and chances generated expected goals generated on the power play. And so Maya will give you an interesting threat there as well because he plays on the opposite Flank, all of a sudden now you've got two shooters. We've seen opposing penalty kills. I forget which game recently, but one team had one like a player specifically just attached to Taj dogs and basically and was like, you are not getting the shot off no matter what. And it seemed to fluster the zebra's power play a little bit because even though it gave them four on three advantages elsewhere, they're like, well, we want to get it to stage, though. It's cool. So now what do we do? And how do you take that away? And so adding someone like Meyer, that's a real threat all of a sudden makes it much more difficult to do that for other teams. So there's a lot. There's a lot to parse with there, but I'm kind of curious for your take on sort of the logistics of that and kind of how the power play is manifested over the year. They would work perfectly. And I think it would take some pressure off of Dylan cousins, and he would strengthen your second unit. I think the one key for the sabers were the models are painting, not a grim picture, but I guess showing that there's going to be some regression there is the fact they don't use the bumper. If they never do, it's just the flanks and its Dolly, and if those aren't, if those aren't working, they don't know what to do with the puck. The personnel is there to really make an impact and to really spread teams out. You got it Alex, you got Jeff skinner. You know, those are two guys who are really good down low.

"Struggles that really, really dragging his game and dragging down T performance. He's got to figure it out here. Could he be involved in the Timo Meyer trade? We know the sharks want to be competitive in the short term, which might be a little short sighted, I guess. I think that they need to do a proper rebuild, but adding somebody like olufsen and the contract would make everything it would make sense for both sides would make it work for the sabers for the next couple of seasons, still give them room to add in the summer if they would like. Big question here is just ice time. Timo Meyer, is he going to want to play 20 minutes? Does he need to play 20 minutes? He's not going to be getting it in that top line. You don't want to disrupt that. If it doesn't disrupt your chemistry and you think that you can keep buzzing along here without giving up too much, you absolutely have to do it. Because you're right. These next two years, even if even if you end up losing them for nothing and are taking it down restricted for agency, and I guess we can't really worry about contracts too much in the same sense that I talked about, well, what if development falls apart for one guy? One of a, what a performance really did. You have an injury. You also can protect yourself by adding somebody like team a Myers, so if somebody else, you just never know what's going to happen and have another guy in the building who you have shown, this is what we're all about. This is what we're doing. This is what you can create within this within this system with these line mates. Here are the pieces we have, you can convict, you know, maybe the price lowers. You just don't know, yo, you can't really predict the future. But the big question is, does he need an extension when you, when you add him? Are you going to commit to 8 years before he even walks in the building? I don't see the sabers doing something like that. Yeah, I think based on the acquisition cost, it would need to come with an extension from their end. I think there's such a logical fit because they're one of the teams they can just take on that money and the future cost without many accompanying moves. There's no real complications in that regard. They can do so without like you mentioned all of us in there, they can in theory make that move without really touching their NHL roster at all. Their prospect pool is so low that they have so many blue chip prospects. They also have three second round picks, one of which is Philadelphia this year as well. Like they have a lot of interesting assets that aren't necessarily headliners, but if you want to, if you're at the sharks and you're looking at it, you kind of need to cash in on Meyer because he's one of the few trade trips you have that can help you move in the right direction long term, but also you kind of need volume because they haven't had a ton of pick volume in the past. And so that the savers are the interesting tree partner from that end. I just think stylistically, like I mentioned, he's huge. He plays fast. He attacks off the rush. He also, if you look at his Shaw profile like Lance, he lives in that high danger area, and then you pull up like, you

"Trade deadline rental help us for 30 games and they're out the door. So I imagine it's going to be a lot of that, but I'm curious based on the good vibes that they've had so far whether that pushes you even further in the direction of really trying to make something happen this season and acknowledging that one way to do that is by adding a real piece of the deadline. It's a test of patience. Kevin Adams can't make the same mistake as his predecessors. We saw Tim Murray try to expedite a rebuild by making trades that not only disrupt, well, completely ruin the culture behind the scenes in some ways, then you saw Jason bottle who, you know, kind of ESA come to outside pressure, you know, insert situations where there's such a demand from the market from the fan base to do something. You finally are on the precipice of potentially having a chance to make the playoffs. You have to do something. Even if it's sacrificed, sacrifices your plan and the in the short and long term. Go get another piece, and there's always that phrase that France like to use reward these guys. Like it's the one. The one adage we keep hearing. But Kevin Adams all along he says, this is my plan. I'm going to be patient. I am not going to differ from it. You've heard you've heard the confirmed reports of him calling around checking on check grand checking on Timo Meyer. He settled along. I'm not doing my job if I don't go ahead, call these general managers and see if we can get a player a high impact player that can help our team that doesn't disrupt that long-term plan. So, of course, trade season, we hear a lot of goofiness, 5 weeks leading up to the deadline and the Sabres given their cap space, their prospects, their draft capital, they're going to be connected to every guy on the market. The fact of the matter is, though, when it comes to Kevin Adams, he's not going to deplete organizational depth, Dmitry because you know that injuries you never know when somebody's development can go sideways, you can't just bank on everybody continuing to replicate performance year after year and you have to have some balance there. I know there's a lot of cap space as well. You also have a lot of guys who are going to give we're going to need to get paid.

"For my money, that was you're going to see higher skill level plays and Dave Thompson himself has scored a number of them already this season, but just conceptually it was one of the best executed in zone plays I've seen where they were running this you mentioned the Russian 5. They were running this three men weave up high in the zone where Taj Thompson's coming up. He's running a handoff with power power streaks down, passes across ice to talk for a chance, then he himself gets the rebound, then they keep cycling it around and he goes back door and he gets the tap in and that type of free flowing and movement. I'm really curious for your day because part of it is individual talent and young players coming in and they either have it or they don't. But it's rare also to see a coach kind of allow them and give them the freedom to play that way. So I'm kind of curious for your take on the Granado element of this and how he factors into this entire formula for them because I think in the wrong hands and we've seen it with Ralph Kruger, for example, notably a whipping boy on this podcast, we've seen how it can kind of go south where a young player has come in and they want to do all this stuff and the coach is like, no, that's a bit too risky for my blood. We can't play this way that HL level, you really have to dumb down your game. And instead, there's going to be mistakes along the way, but we've seen them also just embrace what makes them special and keep doing that night, and then I don't longer not know was the perfect hire for this team. It was just the perfect time for a coach with this philosophy. This understanding and development. And when you see a shift like that, where it's almost positionless hockey, that is exactly how Don Graham wants them to play. And it took time to really build the conference within the group to do it. Because the forwards have to know that, okay, you have to cover for the defense but you guys have to all work together. There has to be a chemistry with the 5 players on the ice to execute a play like that at the level that they did. And of course you have Alex taku, I think a lot of people outside of buffalo or who haven't really watched the Sabres bunch of season overlooked a bit was just how impressive he has been and just the way that his development has gone. And of course, there's going to be mistakes. If you have a turnover, you're willing to live with it, but the way that they've been able to execute the system, the donger auto has, with precision, it just goes to show you. I think a lot of this is also practice. They had not a lot of practice. I'm over the last three weeks because of the schedule, but they practice with such intensity and they practice with it's not the same drills over and over again. There is an understanding of, okay, here are the concepts we need to work on to really develop our offensive game in the zone. And here's how we're going to execute it. And there's when you look it's such a unique dynamic in that locker room with all those young guys who have such a thirst for getting better. And even when you look at the older guys, like Kyle up close to Josh scanner, when you have veterans who want to stay out in the ice long after practice and it really goes, it speaks to their dedication to take their games to the next level.

"My name is Dimitri povich, and joining me somehow for the first time ever on the PDO cast first of any hopefully. It's my good buddy. Lance, what's going on man? Dimitri. Thanks for having me. Always a pleasure to talk to you. And yeah, I think first time, hopefully for more. Oh, well, I mean, we're going to be talking about our sabers, so the soon there's going to be plenty to get to, and I'm sure it's going to be a fun time. And I'm looking forward to it. So a lot of topics to get to, let's get into it from a team perspective first because this is clearly good timing on our part to be doing a Sabres debrief. They're coming off a road trip that was wildly successful for them. They have points in 7 straight games. They're up to a 94 point pace on the season now. They're one point behind Pittsburgh with the same number of games play. They're two points behind Washington with three games in hand. And I noticed DOM's model at the athletic has them at 16% probability to make the playoffs and that seems at first blush to be low. On the lower end of things for me because both wildcards bought that I mentioned have kind of opened up here for the taking. And I think DOM's model and admit as much bakes into account previous performance as well. And that's almost, I feel like a relevant for the Sabres team just because it's so fundamentally different to group of young players than it has been in the past. So considering all that, I think things are unequivocally trending up and this is a good time for us to chat about this recent performance we've seen from them. Of course, yeah. And I think strength the schedule ahead seems really difficult. You look, I've seen a few of the models, they've had one of the most difficult, you know, roads, roads to the end of the regular season, but yeah, I mean, this is the product of development.

"From the leaks perspective, the pandemic can not be overlooked in that a lot of the problems I believe stemmed from contracts at resigned before the pandemic, assuming the cap was going up on the projections that they had. And then it got smashed with a steamroller. And so the cap has been flat. People say flat cap and I don't think they take the implication of what that really means. There's no growth, but the contracts are still on the cap that you already signed before the cap flattened out. that's why I think the league will be really reluctant to do anything because they'll say, look, after next year, the cap is going to go up X number of dollars, then X plus number of dollars. And they'll tell you that there will be more flexibility. Yeah. The one thing that I'd like to see, the one thing I'd like to see the one I think I don't think you need to change the system because that's a far more involved, longer negotiation. I've been a proponent to take one salary and be able to franchise cap that salary. So each June 20th or 25th, because free agency starts on July 1st, each team designates one salary for that year that comes off the books. So it might be Connor McDavid this year. It might, but then Leon draisaitl comes up for a contract and he leapfrogs him, so it might be Leon draisaitl the next year. It doesn't have to be the same salary all the time. But each June 25th, you can take that salary and put it into your franchise tag. If you do that, that gives you another 12 and a half $1 million of capital. Owner, if it's McDavid, owners can do it or not doing it. Doesn't matter. Up to them. It still keeps the salary floor in the same place. It keeps a salary upper limit in the same place. But you're allowed to take one salary and take it outside the player pool and put it in this franchise tag. To me, it opens up space. It opens up flexibility. And it doesn't decimate the system. I like it. I like it. And Carlo and I have gone back and forth on a luxury tax. He's a proponent of a luxury tax. You know, so then you enhance revenue sharing. So it balances the haves versus the have nots. For me, that gets a little bit more authenticated. And then I also ask, okay, well, what's the give back that Batman is going to request? You know, to alter the system to that point, you know what he's going to ask for. Okay. Guaranteed contracts. That's given. All right, buddy. "And an enormous shout out to Nicole Hendricks and the buffalo Sabres public relations people, right? Because you alerted me last night saying, hey, I mean, I'm watching it unfold, of course. And we can see what tage Thompson is doing in the salt of the Columbus blue jackets, but you're like, hey, we should reach out and see if he'll come on the podcast. And automatically, I'm like, well, yeah, I guess, you know, maybe next week, and then I'm like, yeah. No, I think grey means let's try and get him on tomorrow, being as we're recording. So flip out the text to Nicole. Any chance of grabbing page for ten minutes or so, yeah, let me get back to you. Ten minutes later, you know, how's ten 30 tomorrow morning? Is that work for you? You know, look, I mean, there's so many great PR departments in the National Hockey League. We're fortunate, right? But you would know this as a former player. You know, these guys are pulled in so many different directions. More now than ever, more now. More now than ever. And is a young father, probably the last thing he wants or needs to do. It's an author interview, but again, tage Thompson joining us. I'm going to say this for our podcast. I can guarantee you we will have a double guest every time somebody scores 5 goals in an NHL game. Because one time, that's it. Because so as I was at Riley soccer game and so it gets to the half, it's freezing cold. We're in like full winter gear. They're running around out there, you know, they're 16. So they're doing their thing. And I look and I'm like, 6 nothing in the first period. Like, what exactly is happening there? And then I was like, oh, Thompson, Thompson, Thompson, like amazing, amazing night. And really pumped that he that he agreed to come on. Better than you expected. Well, we'll ask known us about this as well. But I mean, he was just as big tall gangly sort of giraffe there when he landed from the St. Louis blues. I'm not going to lie. I didn't see this. You know, what he did last year, what did he score 38 goals last year? So it's not a fluke what he's doing this year by any stretch, but holy smokes. I mean, this kid seems to have it all. You know what? The guy like him would be really hard and really interesting to project, which of course the blues were doing when they made that trade for Ryan O'Reilly. Buffalo wanted futures and Kate Thompson was a big part of it. But the reason it's interesting to me is at his size, 6 foot 6 or 7, he's always going to be a late bloomer. He's if he's going to get it, he's going to be a late bloomer because your athleticism and your coordination and your strength has to catch up to that enormous frame. And clearly it took him a little bit of time. I said this before and I love just love comparisons to players that I played against because to me it helps put them in a context that I can understand. He's the closest to Mario Lemieux that I've seen. At that size, with those hands with, did you see his one time or last night was like a freaking cannonball? But he's the crazy at that size that I've seen. Like I would never say 5 foot 8 guy reminds me of Mario Lemieux. You got to be 6 foot 6. And there's not many of those. Thompson is, oh man, he is just any so fun to watch. He's got the dangle itis, man. He's got the falling all over the place. I just love it. Hi, it's ray Ferraro. Again, tage Thompson of the buffalo Sabres fresh off a 5 goal performance against the blue jackets, one of our guests, Dave known as former general manager also stopping by. So let's quickly peruse the headlines and it felt like we should start with Colorado. They're treading water right now. And it's mostly because of the injury bug. And Nate McKinnon is now sidelined for the better part of the month. That's the projection of the Colorado avalanche. So do they continue to try and tread that water or does Chris McFarland look for some help? It's easy to say yes, look for some help. But then these players come back and you've got a salary cap that you've got to wrestle with. So it's not that easy. I don't know how they can look for help. It's one thing to put a guy on LTI, the long-term injury, but as you know, as we've seen and you mentioned, is that so when that player say you won't get a $5 million player. Well, when player X comes back, you've got to do something with that $5 million. And where is that going to go? Nobody has room to take any money on. Now, the health thing is really quite staggering. 5 of their top 6 is the only one that standing upright is Michael rant and everybody else is hurt. But it seems like they're Rodriguez, Evan Rodriguez is a maybe ten days or two weeks away to choose can start to skate like an ins close. So if they can just kind of hold their head here for the next week or so, but it's not just for two weeks, two weeks. It's probably another 6 games or so. But it's not just there. You know, they lose Josh Manson, bull byrons, not playing again. Like, it is team wide. And it is just shredded. I mean, all they can do is just they could take some heart, I think, that georgiev has been really good for them. And so, you know, as they look further down the road, like they're not dropping out of a playoff spot, they're 1310 and one, so they're, you know, it's not like they're 6 games under 500 and they've got to try and miraculously claw their way back. Okay, next topic here, you know, we'll talk to Dave known us about this. And I suspect he'll shoot it down as others have. But the solid cap has killed creativity. For the most part, right? You think of management creativity and you think of mccree and the Vegas golden knights and how they always seem to step in front of it in their quest to win that elusive Stanley Cup. So an insider trading, I throw out the idea that why wouldn't Edmonton of course Edmonton's interested in Eric Carlson. Any team with a need for an offensive defenseman has interest in Eric Carlson. I'm not naive enough to think that it's near impossible to make it work because of the salary cap. But, you know, when you've got McDavid and dry Seidel and some of the other elements that they have, it's not the window is closing, but contractually kind of is, right? So I think they look at the next three years as being crucial in that quest to win a Stanley Cup. So this isn't Kenny Holland's first rodeo here, but would you be more willing to explore every wild scenario Carlson included or would you just face reality and you know what? Maybe it's edmondson. Maybe it's another more defense of affordable guy that is going to plug a hole for me and let's see how it goes. If I'm Kenny hall and I'm sitting in that chair and I'm saying to my assistant managers and my pro scouts, you know, the head of my pro scouting department. Bring me any scenario you think can improve this team. And then we'll look at if it's at all possible, like any scenario you can come up with. Let's just, let's bring it on. Let's take a look at it. Let's pull it apart and say, yes, it can work or yes, we can pursue it or we can't even look at it. You got to Carlson's 11 and a half million bucks, right? So there's going to have to be whoever, if there is a trade for Eric Carlson, this year, there's going to be a third team in it. Or San Jose retains a pile, right? But 30 40%. I think it's both. I could be both. And so because then you can the acquiring team can actually have a chance at affording the contract. And so that makes the difficulty of it. It goes tenfold. I mean, you got to think somehow Chicago or Arizona is going to be involved in these brokering deals over the next year or so. But I think that one's just, I just don't see how it fits in. You can only put so much sand in a 5 pound glass and they're at 5 pounds. Well, I mean, the media was quick to shoot it down. It's always amazing to me how these ideas just get blasted. I mean, it's an idea. I mean, that's what hockey operations departments to your point do. They sit down and go, okay, if top of class is Eric Carlson, somebody try and get inventive and try and figure out how we could possibly be. Because Drake, so you get the analytics department in to start looking. The pearl scouts because you got to make a trade. The amateurs, how many draft picks do we have? The assistant managers who have started cook to coordinate all this information and then you throw it all on the table and you go this stuff doesn't work, that stuff maybe can work. Let's look at that. Yeah, I'm with you. All right, we don't talk about the Columbus blue jackets very often. We just don't. And there's reason to and normally you would think it would be a positive reason because, you know, they signed Johnny goudreau, they've got Patrick Klein, who's back on the ice. He's back healthy again. And he's always fun to watch when he's scoring goals and the way he plays. But man was he pissed off after that buffalo loss. And understandably so they didn't show up. They didn't play at all in that game. It really looks to me, smells to me like Columbus is looking at the draft. They're looking at art in 2023 and it kind of reminds me and this is going back 2003 ray. And Jamie Rutherford at the time was with the Carolina hurricanes. And I know this because Paul Maurice told me the story. Rutherford went to Paul, who's coaching the hurricanes around Christmas and said, hey, we had an okay start. We're back to where I think we're going to be, which isn't very good just to be a 100% transparent. You're not getting any help. I'm not helping you. Like sorry, you know, this is what you're going to deal with because they looked at the Eric stall. So they draft Eric stall second overall in 2003. They were looking that far ahead at the June. You know what I'm laughing at the moment. I'm laughing at that for two reasons. One, of course, the blunt list, the bluntness of Jim Rutherford at that point. And then Paul Maurice, that's 20 years ago. I know he started when he was 28, but he was still a pretty good guy. He's still young. By the way, you're not getting anything. Good luck. Good luck. I will tell you though that you can have that view, but if that's indeed where your arm will take a line and in the blue jackets get two drinks, what's happening between now and then is you're looking at your team and going who quit. Who's not interested? Because I don't want them here. You can do good work for your future while your team is looking at the draft. Because it's going to be addition by subtraction in some cases. Because you can not go out and give up 6 goals in the first period in your home rank. And not have any pushback, any fight. And look, hey, Zach warenski is a fabulous player. And he's not there. He's gone for the year. They lost Nick blankenship the same. I think the same day. They defense just got carved and caved in, but you can not allow that. So between now and then, if they're looking at the draft, it's about who's going to be here at the draft, or are those guys going to go somewhere else? Those are your headlines? "The media for the first time after becoming the 20th head coach and Sabres franchise history earlier this week, and he talked about how excited he is for the opportunity that the team has to grow. We have so much room for growth that is powerful when you look at what we have and what we have coming what we have in our system already, whether it's in Rochester or elsewhere in the form of draft picks, and certainly the players that we saw young guys that were empowered and took advantage of it last season, so that challenge is really, really exciting to me. I know we can do it. Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams also spoke with the media yesterday, and he offered an update on the team's medical dispute with Jack Eichel. He said the Sabres haven't budged as I've said many times before. I'm certainly not a doctor. You know our stance hasn't changed and where we're at, and it's in the hands of the medical experts. That's what I said previously, and it's where we're at right now. So that's the best I can give. You understand the question that you need to answer the question, but that's where we're at. Be sure to catch up on what both Adams and Granado had to say yesterday with Paul Hamilton's recap. On w g r 5 50 dot com. Sabres Had Sabres Coach Watch on W. "Sabres and a lot of your listeners are trying not going to want to hear this, but I look at it. I say the flavors are in a no win situation. They got a guy who wants out and it has the injury with the neck injury that everyone seems to be so worried about was how to fix it and everything. But how do you sell that and get what he probably would get if he were 100% healthy in a different situation? I don't see how they can get a ton for him. They can get something good for him. Sure, but you know these reports about how they want to win the trade and how you know you have to be kind of a landslide deal to move them. What's the alternative? That is Brian Hedger from the Columbus Dispatch. He was on the show yesterday as we Circles through a few different potential stops in the Jack Eichel sweepstakes and to see who might be interested in who are the top prospects are Should the sabers actually pull a deal for Michael at some point today? Hang on Blackhawks 9 30 this morning we'll be chatting with Dave Kerner WBBM radio in Chicago about possible Blackhawks. Interest in Mr Eichel. You think Kevin Adams has run into any GM that Makes the point. You know, as the cycle thing has kind of played out. Some thought Michael was Opening up the curtain to tell everybody what happened with him and the Sabres the disconnect to kill his trade value or to force a trade right? Had he not done that. Had that not become public knowledge about the surgery and all that. Where would we be right now? I wouldn't be feeling that It's a foregone conclusion. He's on his way out. We might let's just say that he didn't say everything about that. That he said would Drager still report looks like a foregone conclusion. Would we be basically asking Why? What's happened? How could it have? How could the relationship had gotten so bad? We probably would just accept. That it's this way because of losing a desire to play for a different franchise. That, um I don't know operates a different way. But I guess I want to know what I'm asking is That that press conference kind of let everybody see about the disconnect and some thought that would kill his trade value. Well, if he wants to get traded, he wouldn't want to kill his trade value. Wouldn't he be doing that? Because he feels like there will be teams that will see this as an opportunity and get me out of here. If that's in fact what he was trying to do, he might have just been trying to tell the truth, You know, just Hey, this is what this is. Why? It's so bad right now. Yeah, I wonder, um, the the easy answer. Well, first off. Circling back, we'd be wondering what the heck is going on. It's entirely possible if that zoom call never took place, or Aigle never said what he said It's entirely possible. The draggers and the Friedmans of the world might still have be reporting. Hey, the Sabres are taking calls on Eichel, right? I mean, they did it. What was it a year ago or whatever it was That the Rangers had called and there were reports that they were, you know, at least taking phone calls. They weren't necessarily serious about doing anything. It wasn't the right time, right? Is that how it was portrayed? I think we'd still hear those guys reporting and then I would be going I would deduce. I would say. Okay, well, if I could wants out, it's because he's tired of the losing. He must have gone to his agent said. Listen, I want to get out of here. I want to make the playoffs and I'm tired of spinning my wheels here and you know, going through all and another coach is coming in and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. I would assume he was unhappy went to the agent and the agent asked Kevin Adams. Please try and trade my guy. But By him coming out and holding the zoom. Call it to me. Um, I guess for me, Jeremy. It made me realize. Okay, He's definitely out. I would have been not surprised. If there was no zoom call that I could be unhappy, but I would still look at him. Go well, screw it. I don't care if he's happy or unhappy, Say Sabres build a better team. He'll be happy. We'll all be happy. Start winning hockey games. But don't trade Jack Eichel. What are you crazy? Eichel zoom call made me realize. Okay, forget that reasoning. He's gone. For whatever. Whatever reason, the disconnect the injury, the losing all this stuff. The zoom call was I don't think the relationship is irreparable. And that's the significance of that day. And those comments for me I just felt like that meant there was a point of no return now. Well, does that mean But but I actually get before you let me get back to the other point you brought up about leverage. And and what is it? Yeah, so If I were Eichel Um, like I think a lot of people would see that and say, Well, what the heck is he doing? He just made it tougher. Didn't make a mistake, Pers. Did you make a mistake that day because his emotions correct. And and that's in that scenario. If he does that with, you know, a ton of emotion, which it seemed like he did. You know, I think we all think, and there's a reason to think this that Any player that did what he did that day. Has a mission has a point? He's going to do it, right. You know, he and his agent have a plan. It's also possible that he came right out of this because when it all happened, he was late. He was in his exit meeting right in his exit zoom call, And I guess his agent might be on the call. Who knows?.

"So weird as it's just even weirder for us. It sucks every time so i listened to the opposing team's broadcast for a little bit sometimes in every time the opposing team's broadcast always talks about how crazy our schedule is. So it's not. Everybody doesn't have our schedule. Our schedule is nuts. Even even other teams at us who are in the same season or like dang own. Schedules sucks speaking a witch. Speaking of it. So let me mention this because this ticked me off. I was like you gotta be kidding me right so i was listening to the videos. That steve dangled. Which by the way if you don't a if you haven't watched one of his videos it's hilarious. You don't even have to be a leaf's fan to enjoy it. He goes through the video. He's he's he's really funny. Go watch videos. But on one of his videos he was talking about. You know what was coming for the for the leaves. They have four days off. They played a back to back and then they have another four days off. Imagine yes. I cannot believe that okay in one more sad. I wanna leave y'all with more close up because this is getting long we've been talking a long time so what happens when we don't do it for a while. The last i want i wanted to talk about is the games in hand that we have over the other teams in our division. And we're going to continue to have that for a little while but it slowly start trickling back up to a recap to everybody else. Everybody's talking about. Oh it's okay. It's okay yeah we're trading water. Were were slightly drowning. But we're okay right now. We're just wait. Trying to wait for been sagan been in sagan bishop and sega. I was thinking ben. "Of them are fairly underwhelming players. This season i'm doing larkin. Technically put a little bit better. But i feel like cousy was out a little bit Especially in the beginning of the season And also cassettes of you know you're playing on You know the capital. So i'm hopeful that they have a little bit more goalscoring than detroit does hoping to see something from him. Sadly i had to drop raquel. I wanted to keep him on. Of course at night that i do drop them. He drops thirteen points. But as per per satis quo as process co of. What i do is rumors of him. Being traded nothing happened You know it's still can still happen. I'll be quick to try and pick them up if he still But you know he's a great player. I i definitely didn't want to go. But you know he was underperforming. Like ridiculous and i went swapped. Paul winnipeg man. I think we mentioned it a little bit earlier. They've been scoring a lot just hoping to get some points out of him I picked up. T meyer today. I think actually yeah picked him up today or no late yesterday. So that way i can just get a couple more games. He plays on. He plays tonight and then he plays on the twentieth so was hoping to get to start side of him. And that's basically all my transactions but Still projected to lose to my best friend wheel this Hoping that my team somehow pulls it out but It's been a slow week. I feel like our league is so weird. I've tried to like initiate trade. Talks trying to offer trays. And just nothing's happening. Yeah so like duck. I'm like stuck with the team. I have you know Anybody worth trying to talk to try to make trades. They have such a deep team that it's ridiculous like if you look at our league bro. Like the guy in first place Dr dust which. I beat him last week surprisingly enough. I don't know how. But dude like leon draisaitl bra Brad marshon polite ehlers holmquest. Like what torey krug sharply like. His team is beyond stack. I wouldn't even know what he would need. Like the only thing i would say we need is another goaltender. Just gotta go. let's fucking go. Sorry freeman could stuff. But i was just refreshing. Ever i need. I need to beat this fucking guy or that just helped me out someone. You'll carry me this week. Not really caring but you know who look got his assist cures that saw. Let's go ask you go. so obviously. that's paying dividends for me now. Glad i made that. But that's exactly why. I went for him over. A guy like dylan larkin still sitting there on my lineup from the draft. I literally want to drop them. 'cause you know he's on the top line he's on their power play but detroit just doing absolutely nothing. I mean. I don't know. That's why i was scared to pick up phil roenick. But like he's he's heating up. And i was like i can't pick them up you know and trust me. I get it even though now. He's definitely his law with kevin shattenkirk. When i picked up last.

"He's not a bad player. He's not doing too bad but Especially nassir. I don't know i don't know he would probably be good middle six forward for the islanders. But because you know taylor is unrealistic for yeah i mean i would say i would say it's unrealistic and also at this rate at how he has been producing and i really don't think i would want him unfortunately Give a he brings the lottery look. I don't need that right now. You don't want to win the lottery draft lottery now now now now. But i don't know man i guess we'll just have to wait and see an esa sad annoying part of it all. Yeah but That's it for me. So let's go. Before we get to our fantasy update i i just found a quote rasmussen. Crystalline in the sabres. Just said about kruger's firing. And he said and i quote. I've seen so many head coaches in gm changes. I feel like it's more about players but you can't fire players and i think that speaks so many volumes and to the that's consistently in the sabers locker like from the best players you know it's like it's nuts like michael up to make comments the does recent and to make does darlene. Man seems fucked. Yeah it's a. It's a bad locker room it's a bad. They just need to rebuild man they need to. They need to reshape that entire team. You know stocks but ceiling where they're going to recoup their losses at this point because they're not really gonna go anywhere with the but valid point man sad to see socks. So let's talk about our lovely Fantasy league yemen Do you wanna go first or you want me to go real quick. What did i do this week. Dropped so i dropped brett pet. She of my team and i picked up Philip phil baroni and mantilla's at home. And i picked up to players by dropping one player because i finally dropped carter heart home. Finally yes.

"It's like man. I love washing play. Honestly i gotta same. He makes the wild and interesting team. Oh no he certainly does so. It's all good stuff and he's out on the ice and it's fun to watch. He's like yemen. he's dynamic and he. He quite literally changed the team. You changed my whole perception of them but then it goes you know what if what if he were to get injured. God forbid you know. It's like does this team falter. You know i well looking at looking at their lineup here. A day really. Don't have that much of debt. I mean i don't know who is like in their taxi squad or whatever but as far as forward and on paper i mean. There's there's not a lot going on and even greenway seeing his name a lot He's down on their third london. The bottom six there. I've seen him pop up a lot especially with fantasies. so he's putting so good points to them to Yeah i mean this is this team's great dude. Yeah that's the thing though like you said it's it's like at. What point does that run out. You know Yeah i mean it. It's really just a i. Don't know man and kevin fiala. I'm really surprised has been playing up the potential that everyone thought that he would you know. Everyone thought that he was going to be like because last season he had a over twenty goals he had about fifty points in sixty games. Like everyone was like damn this easier to break out and it's like he you know he kinda slow down a little bit. Yeah definitely and especially on a contract year for him. Like kinda sucks that. He felt the way he did but Yeah no i. I know about conviviality and the expectations. At least i know about from before the beginning of the season and yeah. You're you're a complete. He was to be like scrape player. And now he's being overshadowed by a guy like caprice off and stuff like that but you know let's say he's able to turn it on. I mean that might be another level there for them you know they might be able to pick it up just a little bit less. I remember when the cox verse the the wilds in a play in round. Right as all everyone's talking about like come if y'alls the best way we know it was like i couldn't hear enough about like i mean i always was hearing about it and it was like.

kevin fiala sixty games third about fifty points london over twenty goals six
