The Unimaginable Devastation in Turkey and Syria

"Since 1990 and I have never seen anything like Syria and turkey. And I remember this Sri Lankan tsunami in 2004, and we saw the aftermath sort of. We saw the wreckage, we saw the refugee centers. We saw the movie eventually, and of course during Hades 2010 earthquake, our hearts were touched. I have never seen anything like this. And I think it's because the development of the cities in which this 7.8 followed by a 7.5 earthquake separated by ten hours occurred in turkey. We don't really have the same number of images from Syria, has now fully revealed the extent of it's like Armageddon and there are some amazing stories this morning. I would begin by urging you as the fetching mister Hewitt and I did yesterday to help food for the poor because I trust them and our friend Tom Travis got organized with them on Monday on a call on Sunday on a call, actually, and we were up and running by Wednesday, when did it hit hit Monday, till we talked to him on Tuesday night, or Monday night, and said, we can put this together, so if you text my name, Hugh, H two 9 one 9 9 9, you can make a contribution that way, and they'll ask you

Rights group: Litany of crises in 2022 but also good signs

"A leading human rights group says a litany of crises emerged in 2022, but also moments of hope. Human Rights Watch says in its annual report covering conditions in more than 100 countries that amid widespread economic problems and government repression, there are signs that power is shifting as people take to the streets to demonstrate dissatisfaction, in Iran, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, China, and elsewhere. One of the greatest humanitarian crises continues to be in Myanmar, where the government sees power in February of 2021. The group's acting executive director Tirana Hassan, cites opposition to Russia's invasion of Ukraine as a hopeful sign. All governments should bring the same spirit of solidarity to the multitude of human rights crises around the globe Hasan says, and not just when it suits their interests. Jennifer King, Washington

"AI. From NPR news, this is all things considered, I'm Elsa Cheng. And I'm Ari Shapiro, in Sri Lanka, protesters who spent the weekend occupying the president's palace have now entered and torched the prime minister's mansion. People have been chanting this slogan for months. They're telling president gotabaya Rajapaksa to go home. Back to California, where he lived as a dual American citizen. The president says he'll officially resign tomorrow. Marlin Arya Singha has covered the protests since they began. He's an editor at himel South Asian magazine based in Sri Lanka's capital, Colombo, welcome. Hi, thank you for having me. The images from these protests at the presidential palace have just been incredible over the weekend we've seen Sri lankans wrestling on the president's bed, cooking meals in his kitchen, playing songs on his piano and swimming in the pool. Is there one scene from the last few days that you will never forget? Well, all those scenes combined, I think, has been really surreal. I haven't seen this much of people congregated in one place, and showing that descent and united in that in this common goal of showing descent against the current government and the president and the p.m.. That is something that I have never seen before. And I probably never forget it. Do you know where the president actually is right now there were reports that he tried to fly out of Sri Lanka last night? Yeah, that's a good question. I think it's like where's Waldo? And we are trying to look for where we've been getting a lot of rumors of where he is. But there are no confirmed reports of where the president is, but we do know today morning his brother and the president, they try to flee the country. And they were stopped at the immigration by the officers who refused to process their documents. And of course, there were other passengers who also refused to admit them into the flight. So that was the report that we have got in the morning. Do people believe him that he will resign tomorrow as he has pledged to do? I think this is why the protesters are still occupying these premises. And they have stated very clearly that they will not leave until these resignations happen until the p.m. and the president stepped down. And I think it's because of this distrust that they are still occupying these spaces and waiting for the resignations to be made official. Let's go back to those scenes of protesters. When you talk to people in the crowd and ask why they've come out, what's the most common answer? When you talk to protesters and I would say these are Sri lankans rather than protesters. These are Sri lankans who came from all over the island. And we are currently undergoing a severe fear shortage. So there are public transport is completely crippled. The trains that were supposed to run, they had refused to operate the trains. So the protesters, they went and expressed their displeasure to the station masters and got the station master to operate the train. So it was remarkable to see that. And when you say, why are you making that journey? Why expend all this effort to be there? What do they tell you? I think everyone felt that this was a very significant moment in the history of Sri Lanka. And that's why these people have come from around the island to be at the main project site to express their descent in a unified voice. How likely is a new government to be able to address their concerns? I think Sri lankans are pondering over this. I think Sri Lankan's understand that the next 6 months are going to be very, very difficult. And we need to be very resilient in order to get through these 6 months until an IMF deal is agreed. And it's negotiated. But I think they also want some form of or some semblance of political stability. And this is what has been missing for the last two years. That's Marlon aria Singh ha editor at himel South Asian magazine. Thank you very much. Thank you. Thanks for having me. Last September, the remnants of hurricane Ida dropped unprecedented rainfall on several eastern states, killing dozens of people. 11 of them were queens residents who died when their basement apartments flooded. The storm spotlighted the dangers of illegal basement apartments home to an estimated 100,000 New York City residents. And now, with another hurricane season underway, Gwen Hogan, from member station WNYC reports that tenants of these unregulated apartments still face many of the same dangers they did last fall. Last September, I met 19 year old Lizzie Gutierrez on her front stoop. She was sifting through scrapbooks of family photos and dabbing them with a paper towel. Yeah, it's been pretty rough. Cleaning. Her family had lived for a decade in an unregulated basement apartment in Queens. During Ida, floodwaters

"Lanka has endured months of food and fuel shortages Then weeks of anti government protests and now violence We're listening to supporters and critics of the government clash this happened overnight in the capital Colombo There were other incidents across the country at least 7 people have been killed Hundreds were wounded and the prime minister of Sri Lanka has now resigned NPR's Lauren freyer covers Sri Lanka and has been monitoring these events from our bureau in Mumbai Lauren what's the situation right now in Sri Lanka Well at first this morning there was sort of an eerie calm after this night of horrible violence Even the highway toll booths were just empty deserted Trade unions have called a nationwide strike but protesters are now amassing again in the capital Colombo The prime minister Mahinda Rajapaksa I should call him X prime minister now He and his family have been evacuated from their Colombo home in a pre dawn special forces operation Their ancestral home meanwhile in another part of the island was set on fire by protesters here's the thing the prime minister's brother is still the democratically elected president of Sri Lanka go to buy a Rajapaksa And the Rajapaksa brothers have been the focus of weeks of protests by some of their countrymen who blame them for mismanaging this economic crisis Protesters are now lining routes to the airport They suspect that the Rajapaksa brothers may try to flee the country They don't want that to happen Opposition leaders are calling for them to face charges So there's a real political crisis here on top of a very dire economic one as well How did things get so bad in Sri Lanka Yeah so the Rajapaksa brothers are accused of mismanaging the economic crisis but they're not solely the cause of it Sri Lanka just had some bad luck in recent years The economy relies on tourism and remittances from abroad both of those things were really hard hit by the pandemic And tourism was hurt even before that by those horrific 2019 Easter Sunday bombings Sri Lanka was victim of these terrible terror attacks that killed more than 200 people on Easter 2019 So the country was low on foreign currency reserves to begin with And that's what the government uses basically U.S. dollars to buy fuel And so the country has suffered shortages of cooking gas and fuel for power plants Then what happened to the world the Ukraine war sent oil and coal prices through the roof and exacerbated everything So Sri Lanka right now is suffering inflation of upwards of 20% rolling blackouts shortages of food and fuel as I mentioned It's a real scene of desperation And now we've got a heat wave on top of it So Sri Lanka shows us how societies can explode and come apart when climate and economic crisis come together and make people very uncomfortable Yeah that's a lot happening all at once Lauren what's next there Well the prime minister's resignation means that the cabinet is dissolved And that means there's no finance minister whose job it is to negotiate with the International Monetary Fund on bailout loans And that's an international bailout package that Sri Lanka just desperately needs right now NPR's Lauren freyr thank you very much You're welcome Thank you.

"I would say there are a lot of people who don't feel very safe in a Sri Lanka that actively discriminates against them where the state structure is such and the same would be for Tama people But while the atmosphere in the capital is largely peaceful almost carnival like the situation in the north is very different This area is where most of the country's Tamil population lives and where much of Sri Lanka's bloody Civil War was forced until 2009 between Tamil separatists and Sri Lankan government forces It remains an area where killings and disappearances are not uncommon And though anti government feelings there run deep protests have been much rarer There is always the fear of state violence historically protesting the north and east of Sri Lanka has always been met with different ways of crackdowns Is a Tamil civil rights activist based in the northern city of jaffna She argues that her community would not see the same kind of restraints from security forces that are so far been afforded to protesters in Colombo And there's also frustration that after years of marginalisation of protest and violent crackdowns within her own community it's only demonstrations involving the sinhala majority that are now attracting international attention This is huge And I really hope this is the moment But I think a lot more work has to be done by the majority community and by the state for it to get to a point where it becomes a struggle that we also feel we are truly a part of You know that we feel safe in our space with a voice and a political differences and demands Black at golf face in Colombo it's hard to deny that in spite of the many roadblocks ahead Sri Lanka's diverse population does feel united by a common aim At least for now Now we had the 30th of war and we suffered a lot Enough we want a peaceful country with good men That's it.

"People looked around and went, I can't put food on the table, and I can't even see the table anymore, because we are having 13 hour power cuts during the day. Around the country, protesters are demanding that the president resign. Some of the demonstrations have turned violent and there's been at least one death reported. As of today, you and JS watchdog group has counted 350 protests in Sri Lanka just in the last few weeks. This has turned into a proper island wide protest movement. This massive people's protests, people coordinating and putting each other on telegram groups and saying, we're going to go there. We're going to stand there until that guy is sent home. Sri Lanka's healthcare system is now running out of crucial supplies. Catheters, anesthesia, painkillers, antibiotics, the government is turning to India and China and also organizations like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, trying to get aid and loan packages. Earlier this month, Sri Lanka stopped foreign debt payments. This is the first time in the country's history as an independent nation that it's done that. The pause is helping free up scarce foreign reserves to pay for critical imports. And in the meantime, to try and help the situation, economists cha you DOM Singha says there is one thing that could help put more dollars in the country's piggy bank. He says, Sri lankans living overseas or really anyone with the ability to open an account in the country should just deposit dollars. Maybe even a few dollars coming into the banking system can really help because those dollars now become dollars in the banking system can have access to allocate foreign essential good import. That's so interesting because what you're describing is basically like crowdfunded foreign exchange reserves. Very much very much. If things really get don't really work out or don't work out fast enough critically, then really Sri Lanka's only option to survive or for.

"Hundreds of furious protesters gathered this week outside the residence of Sri Lanka's prime minister. They want the government out. Demonstrations that have been simmering since mid March have reached boiling point. Sri Lanka is in the grip of an economic crisis, the worst since the 1940s and blame is falling on the president, go to Bayer roger Parker. So we are here to make that kid. And we will fight until this picture. More time to have to go home. Come on, come on. It's a dangerous time for go to as he's known the latest in a long, dynastic line of politicians from the Rajapaksa family. He is cutting an ever more embattled and isolated figure. Sri Lanka's president got by a roger pax one, the presidential election 2019, but I really large margin. He then dissolved the legislature, filled the government with relatives and cronies, and then when the parliamentary election happened in 2020, his coalition won a big majority, which allowed him to change the constitution and he gave himself even more power. Leadership writes about South Asia for The Economist. But over the past few weeks that hold has been slipping. Sri Lanka's economies and freefall, the rupee has declined by more than 30% against the dollar food and fuel that's becoming incredibly expensive. People are very angry and they've taken to the streets to protest against this situation. How is all of that economic mess manifesting for Sri lankans? Things like food and particularly cooking gas. I have been an extremely short supply for weeks, and people are having to wait for hours to buy those things. And if they can get them at all, they're paying absolutely exorbitant prices. They've been power cuts up to 13 hours and some places. And over the past few days, there's also been really severe sort of medicine so doctors are saying, no, we don't have the essential stuff to be doing our jobs you might have to close people are going to die. It's really very depressing. So how did it get this bad? There's a combination of long running economic imbalances, external shocks recently and mismanagement by the government, which of all played a part, and the situation getting so terrible. An earlier government, which was headed up, I got to buy his brother, borrowed very heavily, meant to finance infrastructure projects. They haven't seen returns. The current administration has slashed taxes, which cut government revenue, which happened very unfortunately right before the pandemic, which decimated tourism, a very important source of foreign currency for Sri Lanka. And then there's just been increasing numbers of bad policy ideas. So last year, the government briefly banned fertilizer imports because I thought that would save it dollars that obviously affected agriculture in the country so that they reversed it pretty quickly. But it hobbled food production anyway. And then just as tourism had started to recover earlier this year, Russia invaded Ukraine, and that pushed up commodity prices even more. And all of these things put together have made life incredibly hard for Sri lankans, including middle class people who are usually shielded from those kinds of crises. They blame the government and they want the government gone. So a combination then of ineptitude and I guess some bad luck on the part of the government. What's it doing about the protests? Over the past week or so, the government really failed to read the public mood. Mister redder packed imposed a state of emergency about a week ago which gave the army wide ranging powers to crack down on rest, which he hoped would quell the protests, but it didn't. And then he doubled down and posed a weekend on curfew and a brief ban on social media in another attempt to stop people from protesting. That really backfired quite badly and people just went back to the streets. Again, we're gathered here today. Today's the third day is because of the constant oppression by the state of trying to silence us trying to ignore our voices and at this point so when all of these repressive measures fail to stop people from protesting, the president changed direction. He rescinded the social media ban. I had an emergency meeting with his cabinet after which most of his menaces resigned, leaving only himself and his brother hinder, who's the prime minister. And the day after that, he lived the curfew and he named four new interim ministers who were supposed to steer the country out of crisis. And is that working? None of those measures so far have had the desired effect. So one of the ministers he appointed the finance minister resigned just 24 hours into the job because he clearly didn't feel like it was particularly appealing. And political stability just deteriorate had yet further in the wake of this decision's mister Rajapaksa's coalition partners withdrew their support from its government, which left the government without a parliamentary majority. And the protests have continued and the past few days have been particularly doctors and nurses who've protested about the lack of medicines and medical supplies. And the protesters clearly still want the remaining retro packs of school, but neither the president or the prime minister have given any indication that they're going to resign. And in the meantime, the opposition has rejected the court to join in the general government and seems reluctant to take charge in the middle of this aspiring crisis. And so what is the solution to that crisis? Much of what's driving this is economic. This is going to be incredibly difficult to deal with this crisis because the economic situation is pretty dire. Basically the main issue is that Sri Lanka's at risk of a really messy default on its debt. And it's not going to avoid one without external help. The government's put itself in a very difficult position by waiting until now to seek help from the International Monetary Fund, which is probably going to need in order to meet its debt repayments, which amount to something like $7 billion this year. According to some estimates around 9% of pre crisis GDP, it faces a $1 billion bond repayment in July, which is probably not going to be able to make. Most of the country's foreign reserves are gone and it hasn't had access to global credit markets for two years because it lost that at the beginning of the pandemic. And there's been some sort of support extended by other countries. So India has stepped in in a big way. They've started delivering fuel to Sri Lanka and they've extended credit lines and assistance. It's amounting to something like two and a half $1 billion. But Sri Lanka is going to need more debt relief and more aid to stay afloat. And continue to import food and fuel in the coming months. While it deals with restructuring, this colossal debt that is facing. And is that debt relief coming? Is there a way out of this crisis? So it's going to be very difficult to be successful in these negotiations with the IMF, what the government is in such a disarray because usually for these kinds of things you need a stable administration with public buy in that can justify those decisions and the government definitely doesn't look like it is that. On the other hand, things are not entirely hopeless. The government seems to have started to realize at least how serious the situation is. They've appointed an advisory panel of economists to support them and then negotiations with the IMF. And appointed a respected economist to head up Central Bank. Those are positive steps. There's also been a slight easing of the protests because they've been fuel shipments from India coming in over the past few days, which is slightly eased the situation on the fuel and power front. But ultimately there's a stopgap solutions and whether the government can convince the people that it's able to deal with this crisis and whether the people believe that it can, that's going to determine whether.

"And so with trade shutdown in the Black Sea you've got tremendous increased costs of nitrogen and potassium You've got the increased cost of wheat and corn and sunflower oil And it's going to have a huge impact on the World Food Program and lower income economies You're seeing this a little bit in Sri Lanka right now where they had gone have to go to the IMF for an emergency bailout that's 4000 miles from Ukraine but the impact of the war is already hurting them and you and I and other people who are fortunate enough blessed enough to wake up inside this great country The United States of America we're going to pay more for our bread certainly but there are other people around the world that I'm very concerned are going to be literally starving

How Does One Access Their Bitcoin Funds?

"You brought up an interesting subject just a few minutes ago and I wanna come back to it now. You said, 'cause this is very, very true. The Mexico's economy really could not exist without transfers of monetary dollars back from the United States. Economy would crash. We know that from Western Union to this the old saying he's going back for. You might have mentioned this I sent it back in Bitcoin that more than likely the family in Mexico would get the transaction through the computer, however, you know, they got it. And they would convert it, I'm assuming in the dollars or pesos, whichever one they wanted. Where would they do that at? If you, Derek, you sent me about whatever means through a server, however it is. You sent me a Bitcoin today. And I said, well, that's really nice. I want the money. Where would I go, just so to speak get the money? Sure. Well, first of all, I would say it depends on the country that you're in if you would want your local currency. If you're in Venezuela, you probably want to keep it in Bitcoin. Mexico, their currency has actually been quite strong. So that's a bit different. Colombia, the currency hasn't done so well. So not all of them wanted their local currency, but many do. The Sri Lanka, for example, Sri Lanka, El Salvador, just announced it as a Bitcoin as the official currency for El Salvador as one of several. So you may just keep it in Bitcoin. But to answer your specific question, there are more advanced ways to do this, but I'm just trying to explain the easiest way to solve some of these problems. And so you may use something like a Gemini or a similar product. And so that can help manage this operation and help you transfer it back to your Fiat currency at your local bank. And so once the transaction is sent to you, you may immediately essentially send a wire. It's not actually a wire you're not going to pay a wire fee, but you have the Bitcoin and your Gemini account and you push a button to transfer it to your bank account so that way you have it in that local currency.

The World Is Increasingly at Risk of a Global Financial Crisis

"I wrote an article about how we are now increasingly in jeopardy of a global financial crisis. I wouldn't have said this before, but the World Bank, David Lopez, whom I've known for many years, president of the World Bank came out with a warning and said, numerous countries really kind of emerging market developing countries, meaning very poor countries. Have too much debt, and they're not going to be able to pay it back. You see, normally, the World Bank used to lend money, but, you know, hey, 2020, 2021, with all that cash in the system, in part, thanks to the Federal Reserve, all these hedge funds started landing money to a lot of these emerging market countries. And now the bills are coming due. And the rates are resetting because interest rates are going up, it's just like in 2008. Remember in 2008, the whole housing crisis, all these people got loans, leading up to 2008 that maybe shouldn't have had all those loans. I love the Nina loans. The no income no acid loans. Well, there are a lot of those out there at that time, and then as soon as rates reset, well, what do you know? People couldn't afford to pay their mortgages. It's the same kind of thing now going on on a global scale. All this money has been lent to all these countries who now are saying, wow, wait a second. How are we going to pay this back? I mean, we were talking about places like Sri Lanka and El Salvador. And so the danger is that some of these hedge funds, some of these institutions, probably the institutions that lent the money are going to stumble when they don't get the money back. And the fear is if they stumble, what happens to the individual little guy, right? The investors, the American investors, retail investors, pension funds that are invested in all these things. Did they then stumble? This is the domino effect that we have to be

"sri" Discussed on Drive with Us Podcast

"So what would you say is one of your top three craziest driving clearances. This was other passenger but we were In sri lanka and most times there you can either do public transportation. The trains get around at a lot of people. Hire a driver and your drivers actually with you the whole ten days or whatever that you're there and actually sleeps in accommodation either near where you sleep and it's all in a package and they're and they're wonderful but our driver had car problems. His car was overheating. Almost the whole time and it's it was hot and there's a lot of getting behind old motorcycle or some you know there's not a good emissions control so there's a lot of fumes coming off of vehicles and you get stuck behind horses and cattle and elephants in turkeys and all kinds of all kinds of animal life. Which was actually fun. A really fun part of the trip and it was one of the most beautiful drives it. Just that was one of the most magical parts of the trip unfortunately slightly ruined by this situation with the car overheating because then we would have to just roll down the windows. Turn off the air conditioning. Boil and i mentioned. I get carsick and so i was fine. Normally when you're hot and you're on sort of winding roads and things. It wasn't that pleasant and several times we had to stop and just wait for the card cooldown so they were already long drives with a lot of obstacles and that was pleasant to an extent. But then if you have to just sit on the side of the road for twenty minutes for the article on it gets a little tiresome. And then on the way to the airport it's supposedly he had gotten effects but it was still happening and here we are. We have a long flight back. We lived in china but it was still a fairly decent flight. And you don't want to be feeling sweaty and gross and tragically missing your flight. We left probably significantly more time than we needed to be safe and we still just barely made it so that was definitely one and the the windy roads through the mountains. The other i've been in a few accidents mostly as the passenger. I was hit as a driver. Rear ended by a kid that had just started driving so that wasn't really crazy but it was a bit of a unique experience because he was so nervous. Imagine yeah he was really upset. And i was. I think i was just going to pick up. Carry out for dinner so something where i ran. I said i'll be back in. You know ten minutes and then calling husbands saying No it'll be a little longer. But his his father the kid who hit me his father was really nice and didn't wanna do it through insurance because a new driver claiming something like that It'll mean the rates skyrocket for awhile. We got an estimate and he was really good to work with on kidding the bumper. It was not that nothing major. But i've been passenger of several cars that have been rear ended. Seems like rear ending is the thing that happens to just about everybody at some point crazy..

Novosel principles are the last two knowledge is all about the nfl gives and talks about in which directions are the energy and in vich that actions are the negative energy. So then you look at the east and the north. They are considered to be good energy if boss if energy god it's positive vibration while the rest and the salt are considered to be the negative energy. So this building. This yoga beat happiness center was built according to this technique so the front gate is sorted located in the east so all the all the boss. If they've energy can come in the door thought that he located in such that it it all the positive energy can come in if you look at. For instance the toilets. They are totally in the south. Where all the negative. All the raced goes out on the wall on the side. South side of the building there is no window in it so no negative. Lightning comes in also. "We should try all right so you might not like this but they do have mcdonald's in sri lanka this thing called chicken big mac which i had to try and actually quite good. It's basically mac chicken patty so that was kinda interesting but more. Yeah to your point. I think you're probably looking more for the local culture to some the guest houses we stayed at. They often would serve hoppers in the morning net. There's a couple of styles it is a bowl hopper which is a bowl shaped pancake made out of rice. Flour is very common in sri lanka and they typically will fill it with With an egg in perhaps some other ingredients of vegetables in the light or they also have string hoppers which are also this rice flour. That's more in the shape. Spaghetti that they often mixed in with the curry's so that's something that if you're in lack you're probably going to try and it's quite good. I'd never added before. I was pleasantly surprised. And i should say not too surprised about the chicken a mcdonald's because having been in a recently in india north of there of course we walked past a mcdonald's i did not eat there just for the record and kiss anybody's keeping score but there were no. There was no beef because of the hindu population and even relocate. You still have about twelve percent between twelve and thirteen percent of people are hindus so it's just easier perhaps if you don't have beef on the menu and they did have beef but it was just. I'd never seen a chicken big mac before which was which was kind of interesting. You're standing in the prettiest spot in sri lanka where he is standing. What are you looking at. Can i be floating. yes you can. Well this would take me back to that tents candelabra hotel and floating in their eternity. Cool looking out over the cantillon reservoir surrounded by the mountains and the forest birds passing over is a son's going down in the distance. You can see a cigarette and now is a pretty yes special spot for us to just hang out and take it. All in. What was the type of pull. It's an infinity pool. Basically and the ones that look like they have no end. At attorney pool is really prunier. I think quite possibly excellent. I think that wraps it up unless we have any other answers that you got leftover that i've run out of questions for we learned as we're driving around that every full moon is a holiday in sri lanka. A lot of things will shut down so and they can happening obviously any day of the week so just something that check before you head into sri lanka other thing would be. Bring lots of suntan lotion. We ran out in went unfor- sometime because they don't really locals. Don't believe suntan lotion and we went without as well ourselves because it was sixty dollars per bottle at the shops and we just kind of passed on that okay. "Earn a little better condition in our drivers. Set us up with a local guide. It was quite good. We start at the archaeological museum. Kinda got an overview of the history of the syria and then he took us through the royal palace remains kings audience hall and to what looks like a swimming pool but they call them a kunas. It was literally where the king would spend time in the water and further along with the sacred quadrangle with a number of impressive buildings. You can visit There's some stupidest there as well and his giant stone slab became across this little about eight hundred years old. And it's discovered inscriptions from the king at the time but it measures about twenty seven feet long by five feet wide and two feet deep in this giant stone. wait about fifteen tons and they literally dragged it About one hundred kilometers away to its current location probably losing elephants and the like so quite an impressive sight that we weren't expecting and then inroad per is also a capital city shrank dating back a little further to about the fourth century up until the tenth century in decided a little bit more spread out so we actually took bicycles from our guest house. Detoro around and it has the More more as vary larger. They call them locally to go bus. But these very large stupas are these. buddhists bell shaped mound that you can visit one which contains remains of the buddha along with the twenty five hundred year tree that was planted from branch taken from the treated. The buddha gained enlightenment at so that's a very popular site for the the locals as a tourist there is also royal palace and ruined monastic buildings and other sites. You can visit around in a row peres well from there. We're taking the coastal road to colombo and again a nice little compact for us to weak. But you usually do that in a week as well when you're coming along ways so two weeks i'll i'll give you two weeks coming all the way from canada or north america staying longer. What surprised you sri lanka. I'll say one thing that surprised us was the speed limit signs. I mean it was. It was a little bizarre. They had literally three different. Sign edge that you would come across forty kilometer fifty kilometers sixty kilometers and they would have a little pictures showing a tuck. Tuck in a tractor at forty. There's a fifty then. Automobiles and motorcycles at sixty and we're in a mini vans right. I'm not quite sure we. I just never seen species like that and along the way as well. We kept seeing these cutouts of police officers holding a speeding gun. You know after we saw the first kind of onto it. I can't imagine you the coping fooled by it but We kind of some silly road signs along the way. I think the you may have already answered my one thing that makes you laugh and only three lanka little wooden cutouts of of police officers. You mentioned the restaurants good restaurants. "South one can be quite busy from what i read so we ended up going through the metal one. There were only little five other vehicles versus. I've heard a read that the south gate can have as many as fifty two hundred vehicles lined up there in the morning to go in so you might want to consider that middle america. I think we can move on then. we wanna cut into the interior now and you know one thing. I should mention christmas just as retoring along here. We in the two weeks we're traveling. We stopped at about seven different destinations and on average each day's drive drivers only about three hours. So you're not doing a ton of drive time here. Looks like from colombo all the way overall. You're only talking about four hours or something like that. Yeah it's it's really pretty short distances. In the other thing that i think worth mentioning this country for such a small country got eight unesco world heritage sites. We visit seven of them. Just compare that to vietnam five times the size of sri lanka with a unesco heritage sites swell. So you're you're definitely gonna see a lot in some sort spaces here anyway. We're heading now. Inland will head up through the mountains and through the tea plantations towards the near a cold. Horton's plane national park and this was our second world despite that we stopped at. We didn't mention that the first one was goal. The first one was called. So we're heading up the mounds incredible views out over the planes and we stayed at a place up towards the top of the mountains which is incredible view out over. The tea plantations a couple of tea factories. A cold hill safari lodge and very very inexpensive zone. This was only twenty five dollars estate. This place quite nice. And the one thing i'll mention it's called hill safari large but it actually has nothing to do with safar such anyone with that. I asked the owner. Why you call it. He'll safari lodge. Just that you could go for a nice safari walk. So i think he was taking a little bit of liberty You're not going. See leopards elephants up here. But you're going to see some really nice scenery end. The real destination in this area is really ordonez. Plane is national park with a popular loop trail. That takes you to this very steep. Drop off called world's end and it's about almost a kilometer high so you really get incredible view out over the sri lankan planes and it of returns back along this little stream and pass them. Waterfalls loopholes really nice heike some wildlife veneer as well. The sri lankan samba Deer pretty common area. We saw this giant squirrel up in the trees there as well which is like i say basically a very large version of what we would consider a squirrel air..

In fact i've got this little routine whereas relenting guy comes out in a scottish kill with bagpipes and they do this. Flag lowering cermony and everybody county. It sounds a little corny making. But it's kind of fun and it's definitely a nice spot that just sit on the randa there and watch the sun go down and i did notice that it actually made the book a thousand places to see before you die now. I know that author who is a very charming woman by the way we have met but she does tend to like hotels a lot. So it's really five hundred hotels that you should stay in before you die in five hundred really cool places but this is one of the hotels that she picked for them. Yeah it definitely makes the list. So that was colombo. There's other things to do there. But i think maybe we could move a little further south to the beach area which was popular especially with a lot of the european to go to sri lanka. Then we went to. Eric called pinto beach yet in the south west coast of sri lanka. And really you can pick any of the beaches along there. They're all quite nice and we picked up until only because the resort were staying at which looked quite nice. Happened to be there. We actually just really took it easy.
