Consumers Aren't Worried About Inflation Yet

"Has been tough. We know to have heard. Oh so very much about inflation. These past couple of months here there and everywhere. The economic news is about prices going up. What j. powell has to say about it. And whether it's gonna last or be to vote or lustrous fed chair transitory much though in all of this you and what you're thinking about and expecting since inflation expectations are a big part of whether inflation actually shows up. Here's marketplace's mitchell hartman to get us going. Go to the gas station. The price at the pump is more than fifty percent higher than last spring. Used cars up three percent major appliances up twelve percent of claudius som- who spent a decade as an economist at the fed says price spike. So far are mostly concentrated in things like vehicles and appliances and travel tied to the reopening of the economy and frankly over decades. We have seen a very moderate pace of inflation and the federal reserve is convinced that it is going to come back down. And that's what most consumers think too. According to a new survey data for morning console says economist. John lear consumers believe the prices of certain goods and pandemic hit sectors are likely to more rapidly than other goods so right now consumers expect trips and vacations and cars and home repairs to go way up in price but not items like furniture or groceries or rent.

God's Gracious Deliverance (Psalm 80:19)

"So i'm chapter eighty verse nineteen restore us o lord. God of hosts. Let your face shine that. We may be saved now. This verse is repeated. Multiple times in psalm chapter eighty for three says restore us. Oh god let your face shine that we may be saved for seven restore us. Oh god of hosts let your face shine that we may be saved verse fourteen. Not the exact same language very similar. Turn again god host look down from heaven and see and then what i read at the beginning the last verse in the song restore us. Oh lord god of hosts let your face shine that we may be saved and in that repetition obviously whenever we are reading through scripture and we see a phrase or a word reverse even like we see here repeated multiple times. Were getting a pretty clear clue from the holy spirit as to the theme of the chapter of what god is saying in his word at this point and the takeaway that we need in our lives from it and the whole picture here and som- chapter eighty is a picture of our need for god's face to shine upon us just think about that imagery in this psalm for the face of god to shine upon us. What does that mean. Well obviously based on the context of this passage the fact that it says let your face shine that we may be saved that we may be saved. Let your face shine that we may be saved. It's a picture of god's saving his people of god providing for his people

The Swedish Clown (Bjrn DAHLMAN, Clowns Without Borders)

"Today's guest yearn is a professional clown which might make it one of those subjects that can be a polarizing. Love hate situation. If you love clowns please listen. You will learn something and if you detest clowns and wish you could vaporize them all with the press of a button i promise you also enjoying this compensation. It shouldn't take you long to realize that at least for some people. It takes a surprising amount of thoughtfulness and intelligence to make yourself the object of stupidity. Thank you so much beyond you are a professional clown. If that right yes that is right and here is what our mutual friend maple said about you. His name is beyond. He's from sweden. Matt him on eighty. He's very funny clown and then later on we work together in a charity hospital and talk more and i feel like he's very warm hearted and he's very professional. Yeah how did you and maple. I get to know each other. What's your story. well there was. This new comedian accrue for comedy and she was absolutely hilarious and it also turned out. She was super nice person. Simple as that. So i am guessing what object you have brought today. That in some way exemplifies your life here in china. But why don't you explain what you've brought. Well why don't we do this. I will put it on and you tell me what you see you like this. This this is my red clown nose than those that are wearing. When i'm doing shows and i wouldn't take off now because i think women are scared this way. I just did a tour. Because in sweden kindergartens kept right and we were allowed to do shows for about ten kids. Well you mentioned that you are in sweden. You are one of the people in this series. That i am interviewing remotely which is a shame. But i'm very grateful that we can still do this. Whereabouts in sweden. You're right now. I'm in my hometown. it's called uppsala. The fourth biggest city of sweden. I came to consider it a very very small town. It's a different life to what you normally would have been used to in shanghai. I hope that you can come back as soon as possible. How long have you actually lived in. Shanghai considered shanghai my base since two thousand fourteen. When i started studying chinese at shanghai theatre academy and then not being you know student. The business of i finally got my working visa. And now i couldn't even enter with it because of the pandemic process all over but yes six years. But that's not where you're china story started right. You had a connection long before they didn't you. Yes so. I guess it started with my hippie parents so i grew up in a house where you know they would talk about. My mother started doing tai in the late eighties. And then my father started doing taichi and they were these kind of parents. I remember i was fourteen years old and i came home from school and i just feel horrible and i felt so stressed about everything and mother gave me this book that's called the tau of pu as winnie the pooh and that was my interactions. Be Still Before God (Psalm 46:10)

"Som- chapter forty six verse ten. Be still and know that. I am god. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth. The first part of that verse may be one of the most famous sentences in the songs a good reminder to all of us on a daily basis to be still to just stop each day and especially amidst challenges and trials and tribulation which is what the psalm is all about from the very beginning. God is our refuge and strength and ever present help in trouble and then he begins to describe how the earth gives way and how desolate abroad on the earth and wars in the earth. So there's a whole picture of tribulation in turmoil here that we're all familiar with when our hearts are restless whether it's things going on specifically in our lives our families or in the world around us to stop and be still you think about exodus chapter fourteen win. God gave this similar commanders people when the egyptians were about to overtake them at the red sea he said stop be still says the lord will fight for you. You have only to be still. And god splits the red sea in half and it is good to good practice to sit before god in silence and two and stillness and to remember. He is god and he is all that you know about. He is good he is just his merciful.

Optimize Your Brain: Fighting Cognitive Decline With Nutrition & Lifestyle

"What is it about age or maybe neurology that makes people set in their ways as they get older. It is a weird thing right. It really is more difficult to entertain new ideas. I think it varies from person to person but in my experience just comfort you know when once you set a path in. You're comfortable with it. Your brain doesn't really allow you to change that math. It's like walking on a snow track. It's so deeply set in the walls or sol-solid that it's difficult for you to actually make a new pathogens and it requires a lot of reflection and judgment and being okay to make mistakes and the discomfort in being uncomfortable the comfort in being uncomfortable. They can help you set noise but it does seem like that becomes much more of a challenge. It does it does We the whole idea of change is not normal. I'm talking about chronic change acute chain. We're good at it because an acute change we had to for millions of years. There's a tree there's a lion you know. Better make change in my decision making. I'm not going to go down. This stop long-term change were not designed for that were not our brains are not designed for long term change. That's a completely different mechanism. And and if we and if we don't address that i mean to be honest i know that it's not be recalled. Our political stances. Everything is around this concept of being with change. I always say about. Five percent of population is future seekers. Another ninety five percent is passed protectors And you have to be pass protector in many ways because protection has worked. Whatever has gotten you here as you depending on the past patterns right but all the change in society in the world around us is by those five percent. Whatever i'm using arbitrary number that are comfortable. This is weird. People comfortable with change with the unknown. The three hundred sixty degrees of are known. You're willing to go there and yet this house. that's comfortable you're willing to leave it to go to the next place. That's an unusual concept Were which comes with the frontal lobe but but That's why as we get older. We become more set on all the strings that connects us to the past. You want us. To sever sever sever suffers to go to a new path. That is unknown at a time. Where i'm already vulnerable. Yeah that's too much risk. Yeah yeah is there a genetic piece to that when you look at that five percent can you isolate out what it is that distinguishes them neurologically from very early. You can tell there. There's a genetic component environmental component that genetic anxiety is at the core of all this stuff or term that is like anxiety we using anxiety as a just as a word. That's as filler. But it's a little more than that. Our ability to deal with the world around us for the most part for at the beginning is genetically you can see children. We have two children both trust me. We're gonna talk about them. But they're very precocious. Yeah incredibly but the understatement of the century go ahead make very different very different. Alex is what you could see when you when you I'm not putting him down. Because this is not a weakness this is just our proclivities. We can change you when you put him on the sand when he was six months. Old us som- do this. He hated sand. Sofi would crawl to the ocean. Having right away. I mean that's a threat. Why are you not threatened. By very thing you're supposed to be threatened by north right so that threat aversion versus not the river part of it is intrinsically ingrained in us part of it is actually data shows part of. It's actually program how your mother reacts to anxiety provoking moments mother because the is there all the time wherever you're around the most and how they react know how they promote challenging situations and anxiety provok- situation how they react with it and how they deal with it is the forget about leadership masters. I got a phd. Forget about that ends and starts there. Yeah you create situations that are a little bit anxiety provoking. You fail nothing. My parents didn't react badly. You succeed great how you react. And how does micro environments of threat version threat response. Threat creation and response is the foundation of all leadership. Yeah i would think from an environmental perspective or i mean an evolutionary perspective that You know maintaining your membership in good standing with your community is paramount right. So if that community is welcoming to people who pushed the boundaries and try new things. That's one thing but if that sort of thinking outside the box is gonna alienate you than You there's gonna be some pushback right there's a disincentive. That's that's butting up against somebody's willingness to entertain new ideas or try new things always an and the culture that's been set in place that creates an aversion to change the language the micro languages that anything that somebody brings that his little threatening to the status quo. You have things out. This is a this is arrogant. The word arrogant to push away. People who have new ideas is universe. It's it's such a ubiquitous silencing technique and When you look at when you look at the main reason why people are not willing to change his the fear of being ostracized like you said. Nobody wants to get out of that comfortable zone. Because it's really difficult to be alone in your way of life in your new methodology in your new habits and that's that's the first step that people have to challenge themselves to take over right given that though it's interesting that most environments are not really that permissive when it comes to free thinking and creative expression and most are pretty regimented around. What's okay and what's not but it would. It would seem like we should be more encouraging to that permissive environments. And why is that. Why are we not able to make that more. The case as opposed to you know the slim five percent or whatever it is. Yeah well we have ghanistan and with taliban around us yet. That same mentality exists here in the medical community and by the way this is me not bashing dramatic medical community like part of the only the medical community here to know about just their mentality. that's all know. But but the stagnant comfort with the status quo. Right is the same thing. I mean the hallways of your limbic system are the same You might have put it better clothes and better beards and you know my beard was a little better here than that but if the mentality is i must maintain it's not always over. I must maintain the status. And i don't know even why because it makes me uncomfortable. It's a satan. yeah. I mean to In two thousand two before we met two months earlier. I'm an experimental therapeutics branch. That's as wonky as as experimental as it gets speaking with nobel prize winners two months later. I'm in afghanistan. Speaking with taliban leaders. Both places trying to bring change. And i can promise you. The the the language was much more sophisticated But the blockades same protection of the status quo. That's why i mean when we talk about. Dementia we talk about stroke. We talk about mental health. Even now that repetition of the same patterns over and over again. I'm now some other. Studies are starting with clinical trial with hundred people. Fifty people six. We're done. We know what works.

The Profound Upside Of Self-Diminishment With George Saunders

"George saunders. Thanks so much for coming on the show but it thank you for having me. What a pleasure. I was telling you before we started rolling. I'm almost finished with the brilliant lincoln and the bardo som- really and thrilled that we're able to get you to come on so i have a million questions to discuss. The first on my list is used a term with my compadres my comrade dj who is producing this episode of the show. You said you've been thinking a lot about what you call the unified theory of brain. What is that. yeah well. I was thinking about it because i read michael pollen's book how to change your mind and so he talks a lot about the state of the mind on hallucinogens. And then i'm always thinking about the changes in the mind underwriting. When i'm writing what's going on in my head because i noticed that it makes me happier to right after the fact somehow i'm just in a better place even if the day's been kind of crummy something neurologically is going on this pleasurable. And then also you know with that lincoln book. I was thinking a lot about death. And what happens in those moments. Which even if you're a spiritual person to some extent physiological thing is happening at the end there. So i'm just kind of interested in the idea that at some future time we'll be able to say this is what your brain is doing as a is. This is what your brain is doing when you're creating art this is what your brain is doing in. You're meditating and to me that seems like not merely academic interests. It's everything really. But i don't have any answers yet. I just had the intention so the thinking is if we can get this unified three sixty view of what the brain and the mind or doing or actually in specifically referring to the brain in these key activities of our life that could lead us to a better understanding of how to live a better life all the time in every moment. I think we're doing it all the time. I mean i'm sort of even at sixty two still stumbling towards some idea of how to start the day how to get into it what to do during it. So that my experience stays within certain parameters that and i m we might call that being happy or being whatever so yeah. I think that's the idea. I think we actually people have been doing it for thousands of years but they may be having been able to use the scientific angle. What do you do to keep yourself within certain parameters that might be called happiness and outside the is unhappiness. What are your modes for me. Writing is real real. Big one. I try to do that much as long as i can every day. Four or five hours six hours and then also a buddhist. My wife and i are buddhist. So we've been involved in meditation at sort of different levels over the years and those are the two things that i know how to do. And i think they're related somehow. But i am not sure how. I kind of know that the more of those things i do and yet him in that kind of classic. Mode of going yeah. I should do more of that. I would be happier. And yet somehow. I i don't Very familiar with that with conundrum. Okay so i have a ton of questions. Though based on the foregoing. So the i want to get to the buddhism in a second because obviously that's the primary obsession of the show but when you talk about writing as something that is happiness producing i start to feel very guilty because i experienced right as the worst thing in my whole life except for like a few minutes. A few seconds of you nanoseconds. Where i understand something or phrase something correctly or somebody tells me like something i've written but the rest of it is delicious and i know i'm not alone on this because just to give you some examples. There's that famous quote from who. I can't remember. Nobody likes writing a book. Everybody likes having written a book. And the other is philip. Roth who after he finished his final novel. I believe put a sign up on his computer that said by long struggle with writing is over. So what would you doing that. The rest of us are failing to do. No i mean. I don't think well first of all only really been a pleasure for the last some number of years. When i was younger it was just torment and all that i think the only thing that's changed for me is that of written enough stories where i kind of understand that a period of frustration self loathing is part of it so when i get there i don't really believe in it. I feel like i'm being. I'm having a kind of emotion but also got a little bit of on oregon and say oh. Yeah this is the part where you're filled with self loathing or you're you're frustrated. You know this kind of two levels of torment. In an emotion one is the emotion or the feeling and in the second has come from believing in the feeling as being something permanent or real so for me. Now get to a place. I mean i'm there now with the story. I'm working on head to trash the last four pages and i'm kind of at a loss and i'm feeling a little bit inadequate and a little bit frustrated but there's another little voice going. Yeah that's how it always is. This is the part work. It's good so. I think it might just be the exhaustion of of experience and then to there's something about my process which is really i think because i'm a little bit of an unclear thinker. I've had to develop this method of revising its really rigorous. It has a lot of rewriting ridiculous amounts but knowing that's the way it is. I'm a little patient with it and that becomes part of the fun ago. Okay i'm probably about a third of the way through this really really long thing that will eventually produce something good. I guess it induces the kind of patient. So i actually. At this point i really do enjoy it. Anaconda crave to do it and this may be another topic but the state of mind. That i'm in what i'm doing it is i think what i'm talking about when i say it makes me happy. It's something like meditation. And that afterwards i just feel better.

Kurt Becker's Stroll Through Racing History: Grindstone

"Only made six career starts but one of them resulted in a victory in the kentucky derby and burst onto the racing. Cd twenty five years ago this month with a win in the louisiana derby. His name was grindstone. A foal from the first crop of nineteen ninety kentucky derby winner dreidel rhinestones was owned and bred by lexington kentucky. Native william tian in the name of his overbrook farm center d wayne lukas grindstone raced twice as juvenile before undergoing surgery for a bone chip in a knee. But after a seven month layoff. He returned to the races with a runner-up relation allowance company at santa anita in february of nineteen ninety-six to start his three-year-old campaign. Despite having made just three career starts grindstone went to new orleans on march seventeen for the great three louisiana derby at a mile and a sixteen despite having nothing more than a maiden special weight victory to his name. Rhinestone was dispatched the two to one second choice behind local favorites arbs magic and it was arbs. Maverick stood and rhinestones way in the final furlong. Tony bentley had. The call takes me puts up. Magic hangs on the inside but it will be grindstone with the lead and sar magic. Grindstone when bill. Louisiana derby by war with terry daily with these victory that day grindstone was now part of discussions for the upcoming kentucky derby but he was lightly raced and no winner of the louisiana derby had won the kentucky. Derby splash gold. In nineteen twenty four grindstone stone would have one more prep race before heading to churchill downs. It would be the arkansas derby on april thirteen. It would be step up to a great two and a stretch out to a mile. An eight rhinestone would enter the starting gate as the eight to five favorite at once again. He would have to deal with the magic in the stretch. Terry wallace brings them home. Describe magic magic comes back. Takes at the magic of turn upset. Rhinestone was only eaten the neck that day but he would be heading to the kentucky derby with a lot of questions surrounding for one thing. Rhinestone had only made five career starts. No horse had won the kentucky. Derby on five starts or less since brokers tip in nineteen thirty-three for another. He wasn't even necessarily the best in these trainers d wayne. Lukas would be sending record. Five horses to the derby and lucas himself was reluctant to rank one above another. As for the rest of the lineup there was unbridled som- who would be the post time favorite. There was avenir from the west coast being trapped by a young trainer. By the name of bob baffert. There were skip away. Who had just set a stakes record in the bluegrass at keeneland. On the first saturday in may nineteen ninety-six. Rhinestone would have to overcome history. He would have to overcome highly talented and more experienced bows and he would have to make a furious. Run in the final furlong. But jockey jerry. Bailey had him in high gear. Dave johnson of abc sports with the goal of cracked late cabinet on the side of town. And here's optima to guide wasn't cabin on the inside was it baby. Mcquaid noted in the top urban grindstone and hit the wire together and it took five minutes for the placing judges to confirm the result of that photo. Finish but the winner of the one hundred twenty second run for the roses was grindstone. As one sports writer. Put it the kentucky. Derby distance is seventy nine thousand inches and by getting his nose in front of the wire grindstone had led only the final four but it was all that he needed five days later. Lucas announced that grindstone had been retired from racing. Following the discovery of another bone chip in the colts need may grindstone the first horse and seventy years to be retired immediately following win in the kentucky derby but he also has become the first horse in seventy two years to win both the louisiana derby and the kentucky derby he had won the first million dollar kentucky derby in history he had given lucas consecutive win and a triple crown race and he had made. Wt young kentucky derby winning owner and brief. I was never proud to stand next to mr young said lucas. Adding this is absolutely the happiest. I've ever been in my life. As a stallion grindstone would become the sire of belmont winter bird stone and the grand sire of classic winners mine that bird and summer bird following his stallion career in kentucky he would relocate to oregon and twenty ten where he would sire more stakes winners in the pacific northwest but the legacy of brian stone began twenty five years ago. This month with a win in the louisiana derby.

A Look At Psalm 6 - A Plea For Mercy

"We're going to look at psalm six today i'm gonna read it for you. We're going to follow the alive. Method the same way that we do each and every week so this first question is what does it say. Remember with psalms. Were looking for repetition. We're looking for imagery. We're looking for parallelism. So eliza is when one line builds on the next and that line might be two things that contrast each other it might be a line that echoes the next or it might be a thought that completes thought before it came so i'm going to read through psalm six. I want to invite you to listen closely to take some notes in what you're hearing from the psalm. Lord do not rebuke me in your anger or disciplined me in your wrath be merciful to me lord for i am faint lord. Heal me for my bones are in agony. My soul is in anguish. How long oh lord. How long turn. Oh lord and deliver me save me because of your unfailing love no one remembers you and he is dead who praises you from the grave. He i am worn out from groaning all night long. I flood my bed with weeping and drench make with tears. My eyes grow weak with sorrow. They fail because of all my foes away from me all who do evil for the lord has heard by weeping. The lord has heard my cry for mercy. The lord accepts my prayer. All my enemies will be ashamed and dismayed. They will turn back in sudden disgrace. So when we hear this psalm we hear the depths of the human experience and for anyone who has ever experienced a deep grief whether it's because you've lost some money someone that you love or you've lost something that has been precious to you. You've gone through a season of life. Where loss has been a part of that experience. Then you probably can relate to this line right in the middle of the saw. I'm worn out from groaning all night long. I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears. My eyes grow weak with sorrow this deep sense of finding that bottom of the human experience just being completely emptied out because of a deep grief because of a longing that we lost something so precious to us or something has failed so miserably or we have suffered so deeply because of enemies whether that enemy something that may attack us on the inside like cancer or an enemy is some some way that someone has turned against us or is opposing us or an enemy is even this moment that we here at the beginning of the song where the psalmist david is actually responding because of being punished for his sin that he actually is experiencing punishment for his sin. No matter whether it's something we brought upon ourselves or something that has come to us. I think what were invited into right now. Is recognizing that part of our experience in humanity is grief and suffering and difficulty. And this if this was an important if this wasn't a part of the full remember we said last week the full orb experience of godliness. If this wasn't a part of it it wouldn't be in here if we could enter into a christianity that didn't involve suffering or pain. This wouldn't be in here. And so there's a part of what we're experiencing together. That's just allowing this to be true. It says in. John sixteen thirty three in this world. You will have trouble but take heart. I have overcome the world. We don't get to not have trouble just because we are in. Christ we still exist in humanity and you know what jesus simlisafe's perfect all man. God had trouble in the earth and we are going to have trouble. We are going to have suffering. And i believe that this kind of psalm and the other psalms like it psalm. Fifty one is a som- like this one. There are several psalms that are in this category You may see it in psalm. Eight psalm twelve. Psalm forty six. There's all of these psalms that represent this Appeal some six is a som- like psalm. Fifty one you also find this kind of psalm psalm. Thirty two some thirty eight psalm. One oh to psalm. One thirty we have all of these expressions in the psalms of these times of real severe suffering of real struggle and of appealing to god for his

"This schmear young. And i'm joined by my co host. Who's dealing with the frigid. Fifty degree weather in florida right now. Skip cohen own. Showing you get not. I mean it's hysterical. Because it's the way we dress down here like today. I've got on shorts flip flops and a flannel shirt that makes no sense and if the fashion police came by most of us would be arrested. So that is. Let's get into today's program because you end. Our guest are both hanging out in a very cold place in the country right now when it's perfectly appropriate to do a hot podcast. How's that that sounds great because it is twelve degrees right now. Right things that. I'll i'll do my best not complain about having to put the top up. Okay hey seriously. Riley joins us today and she is a testimonial to a combination of the grapevine and social media. And here's the fun aspect of how i got to know riley. A good buddy of mine in boston sent me an. I am and a link to her work and said hey you need to go talk to her so a phone call later. That opened the door to this michigan based documentary photographer. She's an art director. She's an accomplished author. She's a big believer especially in themed projects like her diners of new york. Which is a a personal favourite of hers. And i happen to love the just to if you've lived in the new jersey new york area. Then you know that diners are just an incredible Concept she's a national geographic explorer. She's a fulbright fellow and her work has been published in numerous magazines and is in the permanent collections of seven. Different museums nine. Oh there's probably nothing. Riley can't photograph but as a journalist. What i love most about her work is. it's just about the simplicity of life And sometimes obviously more complex than a complex and less simple in any event riley. If i haven't screwed up something in technology here welcome to the mind. Your own business podcast. Thanks for having me well. It's good to have you here and i really am. I'm outnumbered today. Because i'm always complaining about the weather or or making shamir aware that she's in the coldest place in the country right now and now. The two of you can share that misery law like complaint. It's nice to have some company. Let me tell you and and riley. I'm so excited to chat with you because it sounds like you've had a very interesting journey. And we were kind of chatting in the pre interview chat and it was interesting to learn that you are not originally from michigan. But from the lemme say this right. American samoa correct yes. Correct soren and raised. That's somehow you ended up here in michigan. Where we're just happy to be in the double digits today and so kind of. Let's kick things off by having you kind of tell us about your background. how you ended up doing what you're doing today and just how you got here well since you mentioned where i was Warren raised american saw. I think that would be a great place to start off so you guys might know. American simul from a number of things like you know american football players to you know a variety of other cultural touch points. But you know the first person to make american samoa on the mainstream was the anthropologist margaret mead and some of her photographs and writings about american samoa. so you know and Independent som- so you know. When i was young american sama as i told you earlier is the third wettest is place in the world gets a tremendous amount of rain and one of the things that happens is that mold grows on just about anything including photographs and vhs tapes. You know back when there while people are using those so we had a you know a a system where we would take photographs When our film was ready would send it off to get you know in the mail to get back in the day and we get our photographs back. My mom would fill a photo album and then she sent it off to our grandparents the store because if we kept them on island they would mold in a number of years. We'd have no relics of our family. History so i became kind of fascinated by sort of documenting a place in time and the fact that where we were from. We couldn't really keep our photographs if we wanted them to actually survive more than say three years so that sort of drive to document is really becoming a leading charge in fascination with documenting things and being sort of for that picks niche interests. That might be sort of going away. So that's sort of a long answer to your question How i got started in my career was. I had my senior thesis in my undergraduate degree. I interned at the oregon shakespeare festival as a theatre photographer

Are You Glad You Are Not God?

"To the lord of families of the people's ascribed to the lord glory and strikes som- ninety six seven. Here's at least part of the experience. That the sole mrs referring to when he says a scribe give to the lord strength. What are we doing when we ascribe to. The lord strength i by god's grace we give attention to god and see that he is strong we give heed to his strength then we give our approval to the greatness of his strength. We give due regard to. It's worth we find his strengths to be wonderful. But what makes this wonder that we experience a giving kind of wonder give to the lord strength is that we are especially glad that the greatness of the strength is his and not ours. We feel a profound fitness in the fact that he is infinitely strong and we are not. We love the fact that this is so we do not envy god for his strength. We are not coverages of his power. We are full of joy that all strength is his everything in us. Rejoice is to go out of ourselves and behold his power as if we had arrived at the celebration of the victory of a distance runner who had beaten us in the race and we found our greatest joy in admiring his strength rather than resenting our loss we find the deepest meaning in life when our hearts freely go out of ourselves to admire god's power rather than turning inward to boast in our own or even to think about our own we discover something overwhelming. It is profoundly satisfying not to be god but to give up all thoughts or desires to be god in our giving. Heed to god's power there rises up in us a realization that god created the universe for this so that we could have the supremely satisfying experience of not being god but admiring the godmanis of god. The strength of god there settles over us a peaceful realization. That admiration of the infinite is the final all satisfying and of all things.

"Aaron wilson houston chronicle covers the nfl. And the texans joins us here for a couple more minutes. Aaron you mentioned by in your on this story as much as anybody around that building more than anybody to well first off is the is the major issue shawn watson above. David kelly's pay is it. Callum mcnair and jackie's to be or is it something else on the sun maybe organizational deal nick caserio. Mostly he would be to make that call what. He thinks his his power contract. What do you mean. Like what no. But i mean is the shawn's frustration because we don't hear from to shop so is it traded hopkins. Is it nick. Caserio is the fact of all of this on learning on social media than trading deondraye learning coaching higher on social media. Because after he had already Told them wanted the input. They said he can have it. And then just a lot of confidence in the organization over the past year With the way things have gone. It's just been chaotic for them for him. And i think those are all the problem. Say it's nothing new in. It was him right. I think the way to squash Did contact him. I was told they sent a tax. Let the voice message. I don't believe they connected with him but you know. He was informed before the higher was made and efforts to reach out. I think throughout that process you know whether he responds. I would just say nothing has changed on his in. It's a matter for david. Kelly you know to initiate contact. I'm sure we'll try to do that quickly. And trying to build a and try to initiate a reconciliation. yes not. Nothing's changed our reporting with that article. V that they did you know it's not a small thing is if you you're to find out. They didn't tell him and they did. That already was so mad. Well they didn't third time. They did right. They didn't do the third time. Now whether he you know what i don't know but that i i don't know anything about i would just say the effort was made. I'm told to communicate that before. It got out there so small steps whether that means anything to him. I couldn't predict him back. And i can say this. The sun remains engaged in the community with the fans. He's going to high school basketball games. He's getting away. College scholarships to eastern area kid's into reading. This he leaves. Maybe that just means at least that the sun at least his relationship with the city of houston and the people of houston. That's not over. Maybe i transcend from the public had together and you know like anything just say. Tv continue on som- because there's no resolution its version.

Today it's fine from what i can see for my house. Know new orleans is new orleans. It's a great city We're doing all right. But i gotta tell you phoebe we just my little brother just died yes today. He got covert. So oh i'm sorry of Yeah he He had a lot of underlying conditions. He was seventy six so he just It's just a terrible disease and you know we're louisiana. We'd love people love being with each other and you know you can just see how people get it because they wanna have. These gatherings and people dropped the guard and spreads and Think pets may be how he got it anyway. But i'm at peace with it because he would ahead such terrible road if he had made it through and Som- glad god is that you've been around death for for a long time or at certain moments. Is it any easier for you to mourn someone or accept death. Now that you've seen it and seen it in such a public way But also in a private way with your own family while private of course is if flesh and blood your heart is soul you know and it mother father sister brother used to set the table for five and now it's me and it's very it's kind of in a way. Too big to get hold of there. Was this little kid in the same. Thomas housing projects that reporter was interviewing him. They'd been another shooting in the projects here in new orleans and So the interviewer was talking to the kid. Each probably like about eight and just trying to see how this always impacting his life and at one point the interview the kid said i'm too young to understand this. Well i'm eighty one. And i'm too young to understand this. This huge mystery is that we all die in. I've seen so many die. There's a part of me. I can go through the whole ritual of it but to take it in and that i'm gonna die. That's what impossible everybody dies but me. You know that feeling so it's just a big old mystery and what i'm thrown back on is louie lives inside. May now my little brother and then moving over to the public of the six human beings that accompanied the execution and What you do. What i do with death is arm alive. I wanna live my life to. The full is authentically. As i can. I wanna live in the reality. That death is part of it but to live because death can just punch in the stomach knocked the wind out you know it just knocks the the joy of life. The desire is stunned in a way and then comes back and you go. It's a new day. It just from being alive as a human being existential way of putting it is. The truth is i'm alive and i wanna live. I wanna live authentically. And i wanna live to the fall. And that's that's to me is what it leaves me with his. This mandate to live and to live fully. Which means to love is fully as i ran and when it comes to loving in the criminal justice system it means working really hard for justice and for people's voices to be heard. I wonder if you'd mind introducing yourself. Yeah like say about time. I i've i would have stopped you but i like to hear you talk so i just said well. We'll get her namely get her name. A Deep Dive on the Cashew Family

"So roughly speaking. How many taxonomic units within this family. We're going say species. We'll go a species here but how big is and a car. Dac eight hundred species somewhere around there. We're constantly and finding new species surround eight hundred contender about eight two or three or four genera- it depends on who you ask for aforementioned reasons and is there like a center diversity for the group or the kind of globally spread. Yeah so malaysia Southeast asia senator diversity for sure. But they're really found on most. I mean most landmasses have heard. Ac temper plants are. They're tropical answer mostly tropical but certainly very diverse in temperate zones as well. They're not a new zealand and not in extreme southern tip of south america Extreme northern places. They're not typically although when john and i were doing the trick for the floor of north america someone reported finding of poison ivy in very northern part of canada. And we just no way. We didn't believe in sure enough photo of it. In this specimen basically there is a hot spring in somehow some probably averred carried it seed of poison ivy from southern canada and it happened to land on this. Very warm spot. It doesn't get as cold and it's there while so yeah that's remarkable and at least with this you can say with some certainty. It wasn't human involvement. i don't know too. Many people planting poison ivy seeds. But a lotta really cool bio geographic questions you can answer or ask their potentially ensure there's endless answers to or hypotheses. You could come up with but you mentioned in the beginning that you started very broad. And that's still a lot of species to contend with. What were some of the broader questions. You were just trying to ask a lot of just. How do these generous sort out. Roughly how many species can we throw in them. Those sorts of things. Yeah so i was interested in looking at the certain classification evolution across the whole family and looking at the trends and the different policies that have evolved within the family chemistry often the family of really trying to get a basic handle basic understanding of what are some of the sort of units within the family whether those genera were there larger groups of general things that things that we call serb families or through a claims within the family evolutionary units within the family. So he did some sequence analysis in a lot of different logical characters To do that and got kind of an interview picture of the evolution of the family. It was large reflective of what we what people have thought for for a number of of decades in century. In fact about how the family is kind of organized internally but there were some big surprises in that two things that had been treated as separate families bhai som- had been put into the family of by others. Were certainly found to be within the carnousie. So i'm not nice nicely reassuring us in abilities of people before us to assess the investigation of the family using traditional techniques and then from there was able sorta kinda pony on on some of the general that we are particularly interested in and do some more kind of detailed apologetic analyses of of some of the clays within the families of this evolutionary unions within the camera. Yeah hearing it that way. It makes sense why. You'd want to start broadly and then start taking about tinkering with the smaller units of this. But it's always really exciting to me when you read these big genetic treatments of groups and you're like wow yeah. They were pretty spot on a century or more ago. And that's to me really cool when you see this sort of morphological species concept in the genetic

Why Do We Seek Comfort in the Familiar?

Why Do We Seek Comfort in the Familiar?

"The band's. I love the books and movies of already read and seen the poetry that i love etc i wonder if there is existing research that explains that is common and also whether the need to find comfort in the familiar increases with age and conversely whether the desired try out new things requires both a positive outlook on life and the physical energy to do so. So let's start there. Angie what say you to that query. This is such an interesting and deep question. There's actually a lot of research on the idea of finding comfort finding enjoyment in things that we've done before so one early finding that's relevant here is called the mere exposure effect. This is the idea that merely experiencing something was second third or fourth fifth sixth seventh and eighth time the more you're exposed to it the more you like it without anything really changing so even if it's something that prima facie you may not have thought you'd like or maybe even didn't like that exposure makes you like well. The original psychologist is robert science and he would show people in his studies in nonsense syllables. They didn't really have any meaning. And the first time you see a probably have more of a neutral response but then the eighth time the nighttime it's like you like it and you like it more and more with more exposure which is really remarkable. It is remarkable. It's interesting question to me too because in a way it's obvious why. Why do you think that is well. Because if you're feeling uncomfortable you would seek out the opposite which is comfort and the familiar is more comfortable almost by definition than the novel right. I guess i was connecting familiar and comfort in a way that maybe is an obvious but to me it felt obvious but on the other hand you could also imagine that during tough or unsettling times you'd want to stir things up to read or watch or explore new ideas that may help you get into a new frame and take your mind off what's distressing so i can see both sides but i have to say i totally identify with masha and i do the same. I'm curious if you do angela. Yeah i mean. I like most human beings in times of stress tend to seek the familiar and the comfortable and the lower risk. Love actually probably the greatest film that's ever been made and every time i see it and i can't even tell you how many times because it's been so many i feel comforted. It's like a warm cinematografica hug. Is it a romcom what you've never seen love. Actually i've heard of it. You've never seen love. actually. I don't see a lot of movies. Maybe that's why i'm so uncomfortable. The gist of love actually. It's like several intersecting love stories. You had me intersecting. Okay that says and each of them has aspect which is bittersweet and get a humorous. But the thing about this movie is you know what's going to happen. You know that you love what's going to happen and instead of that making it a diminished experience. It's almost better the team at the time. I don't know if this is just a pandemic coping mechanism. Actually i think there is good research that suggests that's pretty universal so somewhat argue that emotions like fear and also emotions like sadness. Get us to withdraw a little bit to that which we know is going to work and conversely happiness and safety and contentment tend to get us to be a little more venture. Som what's called broaden and build theory. This is work. Barbara frederickson and others. So i think we're all in a kind of state of uncertainty. That makes us want to retract a little bit. Even if you're right even sometimes trying something new might be exactly what we need. Can you tell me a little bit about this. Broaden and build theory which. I've never heard of yes so well. We know why we have fear like if we didn't have fear we'd get eaten by a tiger and we also know why we have the cousin of fear anxiety. Like oh i'm anxious about this test or i'm anxious about this thing is going to happen so i prepare for it more. All the negative emotions had been catalogued understood in terms of their evil lucien airy function for survival. So barbara. Frederickson is a psychologist who wondered. Well why is it across culture that we have certain positive. Emotions like happiness contentment surprise. Like aw and so forth. And that led to broaden and build theory which she's spent the rest of her long and storied career studying which is basically the idea that when we experience these positive emotions they are assigned a signal. That things are going well. And therefore now is the time to broaden and
