Formless and Void with Nancy Guthrie
"Episode we talked about what was happening before the beginning. If we can talk about before the beginning last time we were in genesis and we talked about Trinidadian relationships before the beginning. So we kinda stopped and paused there but the verse continues in the beginning God he does something and he says he creates the heavens and the earth, and so let's just before. We get to one to Let's stop there God creates the heavens and the earth. So when we're talking about this work of creation in the heavens, the earth what is being distinguished here because the days are going to go on to detail this, and so what does it mean to start with? God created the heavens the earth before we get to without form and void. What does that mean? God creates everything that a good place to start is having the earth just a general designation for. The is it. The raw material? Is that everything that exists before I mean what is has the earth one thing I would say it's what we can see and what we can't see. So the visible creation, the invisible creation. Yeah. So I mean one, we can look we this may be connecting back to our last episode a little bit of talking about some concentric circles and who got his before creation, his father son, and Holy Spirit and Trinidadian relations in creation redemption salvation is we can see that when God creates the heavens and the Earth Paul speaking of a similar theme when he's talking about the incentive of Christ in Colossians chapter one when he says he is the image of the invisible God. So this God who existed before creation in he is the first born of all creation he is Eternally Begotten Son. For by him, all things were created in heaven and on Earth visible and invisible whether thrones or dominions or rulers aurthorities all things created through him and for him. So Paul here is taking this genesis one in into Meta theme of creation that God existed before all things that he is Osei distinctive himself father son and Holy Spirit, but the sun is participating with the father in creation by. The Holy Spirit is the one who is through whom all things are coming into being well as part of this part of maybe even some confusion around how to read. This would be that heaven is used in a different way. There's different ways that heaven or heavily language it's deployed in the Bible and you see it even here in Genesis One, you have the heavens as the expanse meaning probably. The visible sky or what's sometimes called the Firma you have the heavenly places is sometimes what we may be closer to thrones or dominions the spiritual, the unseen realm, and then you have sometimes what is called just heaven which would be the place of benevolent presence the place where God, rules and rain. So Heaven language is is a little bit confusing because I think a lot of times the average reader of the Bible just things about heaven as the place you go when you die but the guy, the guy the heavenly yes Harps and angels and clarifies say wait. You're working against a lot sometimes. Is. Very wispy word in the mind. So but it doesn't stop there God creates the heavens and the earth, but it says something specific about the earth. It says the earth was without form and void and darkness was over the face of the deep and the spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters now I have to tell you. As an early reader of the book of Genesis, this was absolutely confounding to me. Because, you don't even think about like when you hear the story of creation when it gets put on the Flannel Board and Sunday school, you go right to the days this part not on the table. Not. Imagine what it would look like, right? Right right. The face of the deep and formless and void, and so what is happening here? Why is this a part of the story? What are we to learn from this verse when it comes to first God's creative act in action in the world what's happening here? So. He speaks. All of creation into being and it is this uninformed matter. And I've come to see this is actually a beautiful thing that this is here I get what you're talking about about like it i. Don't know about this I think mainly because we think so much about creation it was made perfection. And so but we're seeing in the second verse of the Bible. There's actually three problems with creation as it was originally spoken into being. You mentioned it. There's a, there's this formless snus. And then there's this void or emptiness. and. Then there's darkness. But of course, you didn't complete versed to. Because there's also hope right right that this spirit is hovering over the these dark waters and we realized, okay, God is at work and he is doing something good i. think it just goes against our instincts. We we've had it. So ingrained into us that the original creation was perfect that to introduce the idea that that the earth wasn't just spoken into being perfect that the work God did and and I would say even. Even even when we see what we continue to see in genesis one that. What God spoken to being we need to think of the original creation, not in terms of perfection, but in terms of potential. Because we're gonNA, see God do a work in the rest of Genesis one in terms of bringing form to the formless snus and filling the emptiness and illuminating the darkness. But even then it's not quite yet perfection they're still it's still potential.

Inside Jimmy Butlers Psyche
"Nick for Dell I WANNA start in a very important place here. The question that everyone I think is obsessing about at this point in the NBA playoffs. What the Hell is going on with this coffee business that Jimmy Butler is running. Twenty Bucks Cup twenty bucks it is some high level stuff from everybody who has had had a taste of big face coffey. Why is this guy selling coffee? Why is this happening because he can Pablo Nick Fidel is a staff writer for ESPN WHO's been covering Jimmy Butler ever since he entered the League in two thousand eleven this guy brought a French press with him into the bubble because he wanted to make sure that he had the very best coffee that there was. So in true entrepreneurs style. Jimmy is charging twenty bucks a pop cash only as he's said repeatedly. Last couple of months to teammates or whoever else wants the show up and and give them some money because I can't get coffee nowhere here that's my bump it up to thirty bucks a cup just depends people here can afford it. So anybody complaining. Through the years it's only the best for Jimmy, Butler on a lot of levels in in the coffee is the latest example of that. So we're GONNA take a deep dive with you into Jimmy Butler today but let's start with the most recent stuff because they're coming off this Saturday night loss against the Celtics they still have a two one series lead game four is Wednesday night but on Saturday night in game three, the heath tendency to get behind early finally did catch up with them and in the final minute when they're flirting with yet another potential comeback. We saw Mr. big face coffey himself sitting on the bench. Usually, in these situations, look beyond the floor and I don't know of Jimmy Barbara asked out or injury does not back in the defensive possession. Especially Butler. Meeting offense who In the same reasoning behind. So. What was going on there? Eric's bolster said flat out that. He's fine. There wasn't an issue. Babo I've watched Jimmy Butler. For years and years to take him off the Florida eighty point is a struggle because of how bad he wants to be out there but to take him off the floor at the end of a playoff game. I just wondering if if there's something lingering that we should all keep an eye on but. In fairness the Spoelstra he did have a bunch of shooters on the floor, and I, know Jimmy has hit some big three's over the course of the playoff bubble the last few weeks but that is not a strength of his game. So maybe everybody is telling the truth and maybe Jimmy's GonNa be fine but my Jimmy radar went off at the end of that game big time because you you just can't take him out he wants to be in there until the very, very end. So. Certainly, certainly something to keep an eye on. That is absolutely something to monitor, but prior to all that happening game three nick in this series, and in these playoffs, the Miami Heat have been surprisingly impressive as a five seed. They're currently ten and two in the playoffs, and with this two to one lead, they still have over the Celtics. Their hands are still on the steering wheel and the one guy steering all of it. The one guy at the center of these comebacks gave them that lead is Jimmy Butler. So. When we look at Butler's clutch moments so far. Which one stick out to you. WHO As far as Jimmy in this series. Those first few shots. Down, the stretch in game one. Everybody's focused on Bam's block and it really is one of the best there's ever been. Sky. With the block and rejection. That is a ridiculous defensive play. Aside. From that, you're watching. Pablo. Early in those games especially in the first one, they're just throwing body after body after body. Jimmy. And in the fourth quarter, he's making tough shot after tough shot. Shot Praise God Jimmy Butler giving Miami the lead with twenty two seconds to go. Butler against Tatum drives them Deep Pang. Shot up and then and one Jimmy Puckett's delivering again, twelve seconds to go over time you start seeing steals and gave to your like there's no way in the world that he would have won that game without him poked away by Jimmy Butler all the way down the other end Butler leaves it and crowder puts it in Jimmy Butler in the last four minutes delivering for the heat. Heroes made some shots and and drag it has been there over and over but it's Jimmy who is setting the tone.

I'm Having Boundary Issues With My Parents
"Scott is with us. In Atlanta Georgia, Hi Scott what's up man? Hello Dave a doctor Doni Personal Dave. Congratulations Faculty is such a great addition to the lineup. We'll thank you we agree. Brother Scott and your check in the mail rather. All right waiting for that since I'm on. Right, now, so anyway, to my question my wife and I like I said, we're on baby step two. We've got a ways to go currently cash flowing kids through college my parents who are eighty years old never saved for retirement They've I called in last. Ti- last year You help me guys guide through bailing my parents out of a financial prices and then you send them through FPU and set them up with a financial coach they fully completed both and you also sent me boundaries which I read. last month, they called me to tell me not ask me that they needed need to co-sign a loan for them because my mom wants cosmetic surgery, they can't afford. At eighty though. Yeah. I don't even WANNA ask Ya. Yeah I I could make it exciting but it's It has to do with dental work. So I told them I was not going to dismiss the principles I live by to enable their behavior especially after they have sensibly learn the same thing. I did anyway my birthday was August thirtieth it came and went without a caller card. My father now spends time posting passive aggressive stuff on facebook about how children are supposed to treat their parents. Now I know I'm right by co-signing. And I'm not sure from a relationship standpoint what I'm supposed to do here I wouldn't let them starve or be thrown out on the streets but this is a want not a need. we're all angry obviously one of us who's right. But we're at astounding. Hurt, so bad I'm sorry. Ask got hate that for your brother. So. Here's the deal when it comes to what's the right thing to do financially of course, you know that you're right men when it comes to the right thing to do relationship of course, you know you don't need validation but you're right you drew a boundary that was best for you and for your family and you held them to it and I'm proud of you for that and you're getting to see what the other side of a boundary looks like when Someone Ping's off your the walls or the fences or the boundaries you drew and they choose to react immaturely and the hard part. Is You love your parents. You Love Your Mom you love your dad individually and together, and they're choosing to make their own path as adults are able to do, and that hurts in that stinks and you're going to have to grieve that But the reality is there eighty they're allowed to do whatever they want to do and I would suggest you turn off facebook and don't listen to the nonsense and you continue to be mature and you continue to be adult and yes, you send them cards on their birthday because children honor their parents and you make sure they are included when it's appropriate but. You'RE GONNA have to grieve this part of man because I just stinks. I'm sorry. Hey, for the only the only recompense you've got this, there's only one kind of a relationship that requires money to be transferred. It's called prostitution. And so if your relationship is money dependent. You're in that class. You don't have a relationship in other words. Because that's not a relationship that's a transaction agreed. I agree and so. I'm just saying it's the only way you're. You have to get your brain around Oslo. It's chapter two. I believe maybe one even in boundaries. That says you're not crazy. Remember that chapter. You're not crazy you because when you get this paying off the boundary, John described it. What you start to feel is is that you're crazy like you did something wrong I, a- bad son and my being a legalist being too hard core and so forth, and it's like No. Sky You're just asking how to deal with this. Well. Yeah. I, mean nobody wants to pick up the phone at this point. In so here's the deal call men and check in how's everybody doing. You can be the mature grown-up when there and if they choose to respond in immature ways, then then you can begin to develop new boundaries against that. The challenge with boundaries is we feel so good and we finally draw and we forget that boundaries do have consequences and boundaries do have emotional and feeling you know responses and sometimes people don't respond well to our boundaries and it hurts boundaries when someone feels like they're boundaries, me someone feels like they're entitled to something of yours that they're not entitled to. And you tell them that. Almost, always, there's a response of anger but I think we get so excited that we're drawn boundary that we feel good and we do it and it's like. We forget that tim be up against it and say, well, then you're not my son I, don't love you or if I really do cocaine and the living room. Dad Than I just won't let you be my dad if you're going to throw me out for doing that. I'm sorry we don't do cocaine. We're living room or it's going to be your fault that my. Kids are GONNA fill in the right. So people get to respond to that going to respond grandchildren are going to be hungry because of you because of you giving this thirty six year old without job for two and a half years any money you know this kind of thing and so your it's your fault. Somehow it's not your fault man I'm it does hurt when. It does breaks your heart, and so but I agree with John I mean just call them and have a conversation but here's the thing. Don't try to call them and fix it now doesn't fix they can't they're not there's no fixing this they're just going to get over it or not. Yeah I. Always want to encourage people to be mature party respectful party the relational party, but also protect yourself. Don't keep putting yourself in harm's way. For Scott.

Smoke starting to clear out; Seattle air quality improving
"Turning to the weather. Tonight, some people in western Washington are finally getting a breath of fresh air. Because the air quality is improving across the Puget Sound region. Check out this map from the state Department of Ecology. It shows the air quality in our area improving ranging from good To unhealthy for sensitive groups. Let's get over to Shannon O'Donnell Mohr Rain this weekend, Shannon and what a breath of fresh air literally right so nice to see it. We've got our smoke cleaner at this point rolling through. It started last night. It continues right now, The biggest left over. Part of this is going to be the heavy rain at times. It's not the drizzle. We had a couple of days ago that just served a soap that smog you later make it sticky. This is the real deal that will help clean things out. Also the important factor the wind. We needed something to stir something up. So you can see that's happening out there tonight as well. With the breeze picking up the chance for lightning and hail, which had been pretty dominant here earlier in the game has lifted for the most part, everything settling down. You can see that we have a couple of slightly heavier showers, but nowhere near to the intensity we did earlier this evening. Most of those around Montesano and then back between two common Olympia. You've really had some heavy rain there around like still coming back toward DuPont Lacey into the north and also a pocket of leftover heavier showers around Stanwood and Camino Island. Who is Dixie Dixon? Ukraine. So I've seen your name in fact. I. was just doing a livestream with a friend of mine who's also a Nikon shooter and I said I gotta go I. GotTa Hang Up because I'm getting ready to talk to Dixie Dixon and he's like I was like, have you heard of Dixie Dixon? He's like Have I heard of Dixie Dixon. It's like, have you heard of Prince? So. Tell us how did you get from where you were to being kind of a household name in the in the photography world? I appreciate that so much. Gosh it's been a really crazy adventure. I've had photography jobs. So I started out shooting the cheesy little league pictures shot with film actually was the Nikon F G camera, and so we'd be doing all those cheesy soccer ball like posing with a soccer balls and Just, the team photos and stuff like that, and then I ended up joining the yearbook staff and my image ended up making the cover of the yearbook. So for me, it was like a way to get out of my shell a little bit. I'm very much a sort of an introvert. So it was sort of felt rebellious and helped me get to know people and communicate and have fun and so that for me was like a moment. Wow maybe I could actually do this for a living. So I ended up going off to college I would have loved to majored in photography, but I really thought. Maybe I should figure out the business so I can actually figure out how to make a living doing this. So I ended up studying. Entrepreneurship at TCU and fell in love with the business side and then I ended up studying abroad with a world renowned fashion photographer I literally googled fashion photography study. Abroad. And there was one program through Syracuse University. So I got to go and study with Jeff Licata and listen over in London and Prague and do my first big fashion shoot, and that is when I really fell in love with the fashion photography side of things. So yeah, it's fun adventure I felt like it was yesterday but it's It's crazy how fast time flies and I got a job sheeting TV show and it just all came together. I have so many questions like I'm I'm curious how it works from. A lot of a lot of the twitter audience. Sure as the same question like the. One one path to success as a photographer seems to be fashion right? You got to be a fashion slash commercial photographer. You gotta be that person walking on said and you're in charge and you know the House music stumping in the background and models are doing their thing. There's a wind machine. Blowing. And somebody's up there like stevie nicks with the white thing. So how do you? How do you get there like what's what's the path from leaving school in entrepreneurship going through the internship and seeing how it's done from behind the scenes to building a brand like your brand and being sponsored and representing brands like Nikon? Yes. So it's been I always feel like as an entrepreneur you think you're just GonNa, go a nice gradual progression upward, but it's like. It's an interesting. It's an interesting journey if you will. There's ups and downs along the way. I. Mean my first few years I was shooting everything I was shooting weddings and portrait's and product. If anyone called me to do a shoot I knew how to do it. I said Yes to almost everything yeah. Just to just to pay the bills and whatnot so I ended up up to different websites My fashion website and then my commercial website I mean my wedding website and portrait website. So basically, when people would reach out and they wanted portraits, weddings, I was sent him to that website, and then all the fashioned stuff on my fashioned website was all three work that I had shocked my portfolio. So ultimately, you have to show the type of work that you WANNA be shooting. So I was wanting to shoot the fashion work so you have. To, go out and shoot that work, and then you're gonNA, eventually start attracting those type of clients. So then I started shooting for modeling agencies, they would do like paid portfolio shoots for their models. It started out as free portfolio shoots and then they ended up paying me to shoot their models for awhile and do that quite a lot and then that led to like two boutiques and showing them my work and ask him if I could collaborate.
The Macrocosm and Microcosm in People and Plants
"Hey everybody say Jay here and welcome to part two in our alchemy and herbalism series, and in last week's video, I was sharing with you how you know throughout history as science kind of became more of the dominant world view. We see this kind of mechanistic. And really kind of stripping the spirit and the meaning out of cultures and systems and traditions, how that affects our perspective of people and plants, and really ultimately our practice of herbal medicine in how alchemy is this incredibly potent in sophisticated system and tradition that allows us to bring those two together. But how exactly does alchemy do that? Right? How does alchemy unite the science and the spirituality of herbal medicine? Well, that's what I WANNA talk about a little bit more in this week's issue in this series and talking about one of the core, the really the Philosophical Foundation of alchemy. As I mentioned last week you know everything in this tradition is about coming to a balance of philosophy and practice right that there's a certain way of looking at and understanding the world around us and kind of the fundamental pattern of nature that is the philosophy of Alchemy, and then we want to do something with it. Right. We want to practically apply that philosophy and that ultimately becomes the practice right which really to me the the kind of. Quintessential practice of alchemy really comes down to medicine, right it comes down to preparing medicine as well as administering medicine. So there's kind of a the herbal pharmacy side of things and the therapeutic side of things, which is I'm going to be talking about in part three and part four of the series but I we gotta get solid in understanding. This core, really the core philosophy of Alchemy and I think it summarized very nicely in the age old adage that I'm sure you've heard before as above. So below and this is really a pretty old saying But what does it really mean right as above so below well, really. What that means is that Really the whole end, the part are connected right that the V above the cosmos, the the great pattern of the natural world and creation the above or what traditionally is referred to as the macrocosm is mirrored in the microcosm in individual species that the whole in the part are ultimately one that the the whole is within the part and the part is a facet of the whole, and this is a really profound teaching that I remember you know I. I learned about this in my early twenties and it was just totally blew my mind I was like, wow, like the whole universe is inter connected and everything is one and everything is in this. Grand web of interrelatedness, and that's really profound and mind-blowing. I don't know to do with that. Right it was kind of like it was the philosophy made a lot of sense but it wasn't until I. You know really got into alchemy that I realized. Wow. They're actually taking this very profound understanding of the world and then applying it in really profound ways that that is helpful. Right in the way that it heals people and helps people in in a medicinal context. So, we have this dynamic of the macrocosm in the microcosm and as above. So below and really in Alchemy the the center of that philosophy is really this understanding that. Nature is not chaos. Nature is not random that there is an underlying order to the cosmos within which we live and within the underlying order, there's a certain. Pattern there's a pattern to creation. There's a pattern to life that there's a rhythm to the you know the way the seasons turn and the way that the stars are placed in the sky and the way that the planets orbit around the sun and the way that plants grow in the way the water cycle is in the way you know everything about nature occurs accordingly to these natural. Laws to this underlying kind of cosmology and fundamental order of the universe, and that really is what their understanding of the macrocosm is
Secular Strategies for Politics
"I'm joined in studio, the One and only Sarah Eleven. God I haven't heard that name in a long time. It's so great to be back. Gosh and it's weird. It's our first time in studio. Yes. You've done a actually come a little closer. You've done a lot of stuff with me, but it's always been over the phone would call in like every week back in the day and the old the old dogma debate days don't even call the show that anymore. but it's like. You've been so active in the political scene and it's funny that there's there are a lot of new people listen to the show now, who have no idea who you are, and then are some of the old school people who were like Sarah. Seeing a long lost cousin. Great. So have you been first and foremost good really well, I just moved to Los. Angeles. So. Thank you. Welcome to the fires and small quakes. It's so disappointing. The first week it was clear skies as beautiful and we were like Oh man we're going to go get our beach tent and and all this stuff, and then it's like now now it's. Hazy skies and it's really depressing and you know I sound like a very privilege right now. Go to the beach. The opposite effect for me the first six weeks I lived here it was rainy and cold, and it was like. I know it was six weeks straight in everybody everywhere I would go they would always go. It's never been like this. We don't know what's happening like it's never been like this I'm going. Yeah. Right and then sure enough it went seven months without raining or something it was gorgeous seventy five degrees every day for nine months out of the year or something, and then it rains again and I'm like, what's this falling on my car? This is bizarre. It is really is really rare that something like this happens, but it's that's what they said about. The last weekend were like this is the hottest weekend and all of all of the year and my place doesn't have air conditioning because it usually doesn't need it most people here that and they're like, why do you not have air conditioning? There are a lot of people go out here a little bit north of Hollywood. So where I am it's common to have AC but down actually on the beach, most people don't because it's like. Seventy S. Literally. Just crack window open your door in. It's fine. but last weekend. Right here where I am I say you a screen shot at one hundred seventeen degrees right here at this spot for you. It was one twenty-one. Few miles away. I can't even imagine one, hundred seventeen. I actually walked outside just to see what it was like literally like an oven it is. You just don't want to do anything used. and. I'll say it's still not as bad as like ninety six degrees in Texas. Because of the humidity humidity, you could take a shower and get out of the TUB and you're sweating and you feel disgusting. It is actually a swamp people forget. Reason more than one reason why it's So let's get into that. They remember you from a different organization. We don't have to dive into all of that, but you are now Founder and principal founder. If you wanted to say with or what, but you're now the founder of secular strategies. So let's get into a little bit of what that means because. I think more than ever. We need that right now just the name it says so much talk about what you do, what you were going to Asians. Sure. So you know I'm I'm really kind of like a meat and potatoes doer and always have been I'm I'm really most interested in just getting things done and getting them done as effectively in strategically as possible and I one of the inspirations for me to start my own company to work with. Clients focused on religious freedom separation of church and state was and you were part of this right in Texas in two thousand sixteen. When we got the secular caucus running that is now totally a pre- pretty much self reliant fundraising for themselves. I would say we spent maybe. A total of like five thousand dollars investing in that in that whole event and that that startup period and. Now, four years later that organization has you know a chair Vice Chair secretary treasurer is raising money got a resolution pass in two local counties van in conversion therapy in Texas. That is and more endorsing candidates. Remember correctly was was that the first ever secular caucus for advancement convention I gave a talk at that. I spoke. I Yeah I remember I remember being able to like I was just I got to say that I got to give a talk at the first ever everyone that's huge. Yeah and now they're like fully functioning. Yeah and now there's one in Nebraska just got one stood up in Florida. So they're they're secular Democrats of Florida and I'm working on. Virginia Colorado And Kentucky now, and we'll get into that in a second but I go back to twenty sixteen when I talk about what I'm doing today because from my perspective. That is one of the highest return on investment projects I have ever done.
LIVE From Home: Here We Go!
"Ought. To think this is a podcast about politics race and culture from a POC. Perspective I may know Hosa and I'm who you're a low and welcome to in the thick live from home I mean I had to commute from one bedroom to another to get here but I'm here on time. I'm here on time and I'm all present for you. Actually. We're so happy that you're joining us. So thrilled we actually thought we had this big plan for twenty twenty like all you. We were GONNA take the show on the row. We were going to be meeting you in person hugging dance. We're going to dance onstage maybe drink a beer or two afterward. But you know the pandemic happened, a lot of sadness happened a lot of rage happened, and so we're going to be virtual. We're talking about the twenty twenty election along with the letter other things including the POC vote. And you know it's really super important. So just because we're not out there in person doesn't mean we don't have to have these conversations and you know gymnasts we got to all stars tonight to all-stars please give workers. Welcome to Jamila King She's a reporter and host of the Mother Jones podcast she's joining us from her family's In Oakland California joke. Greeting. From apocalypse I doing house the dog. Oh man out there. It's rough. I'm looking outside of my window right now and the sky is. Orange you know. It's kind of tricky but I think it's real. Yeah. It's it's really are out here I you guys. All right. Let's give a poop roof to. Elite. Contributing opinion writer with the times and he's He's not live from the suburbs from Alexandria where we crazy. Live from home life from home or my kids are in the room and I'm praying to God they don't come in and start yelling. We crazy and Drinking Chai in. Coffee hoping that Jamila is. Safe. My home state burning I'm trying to come back to you guys new. York. One piece. Hey. Guess Co host to of in the thick, not only all stars but they've they've guest cohost. So awesome that you guys just say I was thinking about this this podcast years ago and we called so much of what's happening in America right nine we actually have the records to prove it just like the audio records of trump. We have the records to prove that we called a lot of this four years ago two, thousand, sixteen I feel like it's five because I've aged horrible fifty. In our minds in two thousand fifteen but it came to fruition in two, thousand, sixteen but. But. Yeah we did we and one of the things that we talked about which we all have talked about is the role of the media and how you guys are getting it wrong in. So many ways we talk about that but let's start off with our first topic so. It was twenty twenty. I think. You know every single one of us is battling some level of low grade or high-grade. Depression? You know he's just kind seeping in for me. The end of the summer is really hard moving into yet another season and still being in lockdown You know also just the weight of these decades, centuries of racism and injustice in this country. and that is kind of the backdrop for our twenty twenty-nine election update. We are now less than sixty days away from the November election I know, right so both the trump and binding campaigns are really upping their games. We think, right. We'd Hoke we know the Republicans are the Democrats. This election season but hey, the pandering has started as well. I don't know if guys have seen this actually was one of the first people notified about this campaign video by by Joe Biden people that are associated with the Joe. Biden campaign it's a campaign salsa song called. Biden. Muscles. Things. Just just. Coming off. Applaud keeps going. By. By then? Okay. Okay. Okay. So Oh God that's going to be playing all over Kissimmee Florida. I'm telling you they're going all in I know the people that created it. Very committed they just basically put Biden on the hook for that stuff right there. Yeah ecological in. Los Angeles. Off The detention facility. So his own campaign song is saying he's about to do that. Yeah. So and then the other thing I just wanted to add. Yaas who Maria interviewed. And frontline, we talk about this I think all the time you know the Obama deportation policy she was named to the transition team of Biden's campaign and all the immigrants, rights, activists, immigrant lawyers that I know I know you guys have been following. This are just there's a story in the hill people need to read it. They are up in arms about destroy. So there's a lot of questions about the Democrats right. Right it's it's yours to lose and I have nothing personally against Cecilia when yours But I did interview her and it was a moment that was very challenging Was You know? Talk me down 'cause right now I'm feeling like the. Vote. We are combined this immense electorate and it's like. Are you kidding me twenty twenty? I've been talking about this since the first time I covered politics in what in the early nineteen nineties. POC voters taken for granted.
Mars in Opposition
"Wadham to astronomy, cast our weekly facts based journey through the cosmos where we help you understand not only what we know. But how we know what we know I'm Fraser Cain publisher, of Universe today and with me as always Dr Pamela Gay a senior scientist for the Planetary Science Institute and the Director of Cosmic Quest Pamela. Welcome back from Summer Hiatus I missed you. Thank you. I've missed you too although I have to say it feels like we're like experiencing march. Two. Hundred instead of September at this point time has meaning it doesn't it really has no meaning. Yeah. Yeah. It's a it's a it's a snake in a circle eating its own tail. Made of everything nothing at the same time. I don't know whether I'm coming or going. The days just blur and yet time just takes forever. When do I get my vaccination? You are you are you on I was thinking about this really want to do what I want to go places and see people. That's what I do. To to have gone from having that amazing experience in January where we were together in Hawaii for the W. S meeting. And towards the end of that meeting, we were starting to talk about the news about this strange illness in China and remember the Thursday night on. Talking with a couple of my friends at the conference about. Just want to get home before the illness makes it to Hawaii. And I had no idea that. Nine mice be earlier. Still Yeah, no I guy I had my suspicions but. In. And now I you know we do feel like we're closing in now on the final stretch that more and more vaccines are coming into into the final stage of trials, and there's going to be some kind of roll out but I really hope that that herd immunity will start to get kicked in and we can start to see the end of this hopefully during this season. So we will we will and herd immunity from. Thanks. From getting sick. So we will. Exceed the end of it during the season and. Regular life will return. This season fourteen, our show is major and I feel that having a very cranky year is consistent with going through our teenage ness. Thank you bye-bye. Now this is. All right, every two years or so Mars lines up nicely with the earth it takes only two minutes to communicate with the Rovers. You could see the polar ice caps in a small telescope and it's the best time to send your spacecraft to the Red Planet and also I. Guess. It Mars opposition. Between Your horoscope your Mars horoscope is really good that other works. Maybe, that's Mars in retrograde. That none lucky time. They can happen at the same time whereas in retrograde and an opposition. Yeah. That's true. All right. So so so we're going to talk about how Mars and opposition is a really like the best time for Mars that's Mars really takes over the night sky and shows us what it's got but. Why is Marzano Position? So technically, it is that moment in time when you have the sun, the earth and Mars precisely lined up so that at midnight on earth. Mars is at its highest possible point in our terrestrial sky and if you were to look at it from space. Walk. Would they look from above you're looking down on the solar system and you're looking at? Earth Mars and the sun what would you see? Align they're just nicely in a line. And There's some years where because Mars orbit is a lot more elliptical than earth orbit that we are noticeably closer. There's some years that were noticeably farther apart of back in two thousand and three. There's a lot of Hoopla because we were than. We'd been in hundreds of years would be for another hundred some odd year. He was fifty thousand years was the closest yet had been. Two Thousand and three. And at these closest points, we are more than twenty million miles closer than we are during opposition when Mars is at its far points. So there is a substantial difference, but in the grand scheme of things. Mars is still smaller than allows to see it as a desk without. Really good binoculars or a telescope. So but just to give just to give people a sense of perspective, I mentioned this the beginning of the show it takes two light minutes to communicate with Mars just over two minutes right now we'll win Mars you not position until you can. You know you send your beep boop commands to your over and you're over goes beep boop and sends back it's commands and it's just like you're playing a video game with. Fairly reasonable times, but when Mars is. Old Dial up modem exactly. An Internet game what it gets worse right on average the a the time to transmit to Mars is about twelve and a half minutes and at the very worst when Mars is on the opposite side of the Sun It's twenty minutes. So if you want to send some piece of information to Mars, you've got to wait twenty minutes for the message to get there and then twenty minutes to come back. So. The distances are really significant.
"sky" Discussed on Betty in the Sky with a Suitcase!
"And welcome to Betty in the sky with a suitcase I'm betty I'm a flight attendant for a major airline and I bring you stories from airplane from the attendants and the pilots and from traveling around the world. In this episode, we have stories about wings, lawyers, frontlines, pilots, hummingbirds, legs, and toes. Let's get the show. On the embedding who cares? So I in a new closet. Moved I started a bunch of boxes, but this is a new closet I. Don't know if I'm GONNA keep using this clause at downstairs closet on how the sound is in this closet. Is there an echo? Can you hear the ceiling fans? Can you hear the air conditioning Al figure it out but I've moved so That budget stories about moving going to start with the closing east decided to use the same lawyer that I use ten years ago. When I moved to South Carolina and I figured, Oh, I'm sure he won't remember me what we spent. Half an hour together ten years ago you know. So go to the closing. Everything's gets a little stressful around there and then I get there and he says. Oh I was so excited when I saw your name, I couldn't wait to see you again and I went What I'm thinking okay I'm thinking maybe he says this to everyone I don't know and. Then, he goes Well don't you remember? And I'm thinking. No Talking, about I mean I was. Moving across the country and big drive ahead of me I think I had a lot going on. So when he was telling me, I had like a sort of vague recollection but not really so I don't know what he's talking about. I'm thinking we didn't go at eight or something. Did we remember that? And we didn't of course and then he goes you remember you gave me your book. And I thought. I gave them my book. I don't. I'm not actually a big self promoter unless something comes up I'm not GONNA go in to a stranger who I've never met before and say, Hey, here's my book So I was thinking I keep them my book curious and it goes don't you remember I don't think it. I don't remember saying this, but I'm just smiling thinking I don't know what he's talking about ain't goes remember we talked on the phone and I'm thinking yeah that was ten years ago we talked on the phone and You said you were a flight attendant and I'm thinking all right it's all plausible and. He said, you said your flight attendant and I said this is the way you're talking he said. Oh I just heard this funny flight attendant on the radio. She was telling a story about putting toilet, paper all the down the airplane, and putting in the toilet and flushing in and it goes. All the way back and I said. Yeah, that was me on the radio and he was like. What am I that was me. I had done a radio. I don't even remember what program it was kind of been NPR BBC I don't know he heard me on I used to do more radio. When I was more of a novelty of somebody having a podcast now everybody and their brother as podcast. But apparently he was so impressed that he. Randomly heard this flight attendant on the radio. She was funny and then his client and so because we had that. Conversation on the phone. That's why I gave him a book. So then it all made sense at all clicked into place. But I am in my new place boxes everywhere not moved in. Its closets totally unorganized but It's done and I'm about to go back to work. So this is the last quote unquote pandemic podcast. We should be getting back to normal with other. Flying and travelling stories and not stories about you go into the grocery store or unpacking boxes which aren't exactly entertaining. I'm just saying. Canadian I. Actually, like this new closet, it's first time recording in here bigger than my other one. Okay. This came from listener. Steve, thank you Steve He also sent me the photo for this episode. So Nice when people send me stuff when I'm not flying or travelling. I can't use the content but like I said, I'm going back to work so I should be getting my normal content. Okay. So this is from Listener Steve It was in a newspaper and the title is one boy's opinion of pilots. The following was written by Tommy Tyler Fifth, Grade Jefferson Grade School. Beaufort South Carolina it should be of interest to all airplane drivers. Remember this isn't my opinion is one boy's opinion. By Tommy Tyler it's titled Why I want to be a pilot. When I grow up I WANNA be a pilot because it's a fun job and easy to do. That's why there's so many pilots flying around these days. Pilots don't need much school. They just have to learn to read numbers so they can read instruments I guess they should be able to read roadmaps to so they can find their way if they get lost. Pilots should be brave so they don't get scared if it's foggy and they can't see or if a wing or a motor falls off, they should stay calm and they'll know what to do. Pilots have to have good is to see through clouds and they can't be afraid of lightning or thunder because they're much closer to them than we are. The salary pilots make is another thing I like they make more money than they know what to do with this is because most people think that plane flying is dangerous except pilots don't because they know how easy it is. I hope I, don't get airsick because I get carsick and if I get Airsick, I can't be a pilot and then I'd have to go to work. I love it. And she sees the City Globe and morning. I'm preparing to go back to work. You know it's been a while to get back in the work mode and one the curious things. My airline sent me an email saying Wasn't to me as a general company wide email to the flight attendants, but it's like. If you catch the corona virus, will you're on a layover? You know you're going to have to stay there for two weeks so You might want to pack accordingly and bring any medications vitamins. Contact Lenses I was like. Oh. I hadn't thought about that. Yeah. So if you catch it somewhere. During, a layover and I have a three day layover coming up. You know you gotta you gotTa bring a bunch of stuff. 'cause you might have to stay there a long time in a hotel room. Anybody. Really wants to be sick in a hotel room without your refrigerator. Anyway. You know it is what it is and hopefully I won't catch it anywhere but it makes.
"sky" Discussed on Betty in the Sky with a Suitcase!
"So you know. I sold my place and I have my offering, my new place and. Heading towards the closing on both of them on the same day. So it's not going on and. Strangely. Enough I've. Made a lot more friends during this stay at home pandemic thing that Kinda. Miss some people around here. Anyway at the pool talking to one of the neighbors and she was like, what are you gonNA. Miss About this place and I'm like Oh. You know there's There's some things. I'm GonNa Miss Really GonNa Miss. My view. I'm going to miss the neighbors especially one but Who is it gonNA miss the cat. Now, I had talked to this woman about my rent a cat before. So I thought she knew what I was talking about I. my neighbor's cats come to visit so. I've enjoying them they and it's a one's been coming like for a year and a half now. So I consider it my cat, but it's not my cat. You know. So when she said, what are you gonNa miss and I said well I'm GonNa miss the cat and she gave me this look like kind of like A. Her mouth dropped kind of like. Judgmental like. Dismissive and slightly appalled. And she said, you're a banding your. Cat. And like not as it's not, my cat is my neighbor's cat. If I took the cat I think it would be considered cat theft. By and So. Those same neighbors they were like what I was leaving. You know like have a good day and they're like, what are you? What are you doing the rest of the day and I'm like, Oh, I gotta Record an audio book in the closet which I had talked to them about before and and I said you know it's really hard. You don't think it's so hard but it's really hard and they're like, what's so hard about it? I'm like well. You're trying to use the right inflections and stuff and have a real hard time with the male voices like i. kind of feel like I have to differentiate between the female and the male, and it's Kinda hard to talk like a man especially to try to, and I really can't do it not that talented to make. Different male voices and I don't even not even that convincing in the mail voice but I told them and they thought it was interesting. So I thought you might think it's interesting but I said what I do in the closet is what I'm going to start something a guy is saying I go. To get into that that tone to try to sound like a male voice. So I think in the last podcast I was mentioning how I love and experiment. Experimenting with a green leg mask. But anyway, just dislike that kind of stuff by also really love a mystery and there just aren't that many mysteries in everyday life specially in pandemic you're mainly staying home, but I had a doctor's appointment And get into that later. But in the morning and is rainy outside and I've got an umbrella and get to the doctor's appointment and about to go in and I my car my car and on my car antenna I was like There was a monkey hanging there a monkey a stuffed monkey looked like it was a new stuffed monkey hanging on my back antenna. That's above. My back windshield and. I'm like. There's a Keel, my car like. Who put a monkey on my car and I was surprised that hadn't fallen off on the way to the doctor's office and I was like who would put a monkey on my car now I have a basically public parking lot park in. So I was like most likely. IS A. Person Maybe, there was a monkey on the ground and they decided to put on it car and they picked my car seemed odd And I really like monkeys but I was trying to think like in the area in my complex if anybody. Would know that I really like monkeys and that new car drove. Seemed odd so Just. Because I like mystery I just asking people like at the pool I'd be like. A weird question they're like. Hey. Mike. You Bet monkey on my car. Just a question I've never asked before did you put a monkey on my car and? They're like no. So somebody else was like an this person I knew new car I had I was like By chance did you Put. A monkey on my car is she's like. No why would I put a monkey on your car? Next segment came from a listener named Jeanette from Toronto and it's just great video. She sent me and I think it's worth watching put a link in the show notes it's called come fly with me a hundred years of flight attendant fashion and a lot of it's really interesting. I'M NOT GONNA put. It's like a thirty minutes video. So I have a few clips here and I'm going to do it in like three segments throughout the podcast. Everybody and welcome back to the ultimate fashion history with me Amanda Halley come fly with me a hundred years of flight attendant fashion and I also want to send out a very special. At its first female flight attendants. Is. She is she is Cold Ellen judge and was a nurse and was employed because she was a nurse. The idea being that nurses would not only be useful of saying should crash but because they would have a calming and reassuring effect on passengers. This was truly a new career. Rushing. No I was saying I like a mystery and. How that all started was I like marshmallows always have loved like a chocolate covered marshmallow I love those cheap. Strangely coloured marshmallow chicks at Easter time. You know they're covered in sugar. They're terrible for you. I try not eat them anymore but. When I used to eat sugar I was kind of sugar fiend man I love those those. Like yellow paying or blue marshmallow. Covered in sugar Easter chicks so anyway I didn't know who all I had mentioned that to you know it's kind of a strange thing to come up in conversation and for years. After Easter. I would get. Marshmallow chicks in my mailbox, my flight, and it mailbox at work is kind of like A. File folder you had. It's like. Mailbox so anyway I'd be like that's so nice. No note nothing just. Marshmallow chicks but here's the thing not only did someone go the trouble to buy me marshmallow? But I realized that they must have remembered that.

But the funny thing about unemployment is the they send you a debit card and That's where they put the money and guess what the Debit Card is called. Way To go. So. Stupid Way to go you're unemployed. Good job. YOU'RE LOSE HALF It's actually called way the number to go way to go you're unemployed. It's like. Wrong it's like that's wrong branding. sappy. This came from listener Donna a heart warming pandemic story. This is from Virginia and T J. Kim can't play Lacrosse because of the coronavirus took the sport away and at age sixteen, he can't drive alone but Kim can fly. He's turned his flying lessons into missions of mercy bringing desperately needed supplies to rural hospitals in need each week he carries gloves, masks, gowns, and other equipment small hospitals. When he made his first delivery on March Twenty, seven to a twenty, five bed hospital, he was taken aback by the reception. They have conveyed to me that they were really forgotten about everyone was wanting to send donations to the big city hospitals. He said every hospital's hurting for supplies, but it's the rural hospitals that have really been forgotten. Like high school students across the country Kim was disheartened when school and activities were shut down to slow the spread of the coronavirus. In TJ's case, the shutdown ended his lacrosse season before even got started but Kim Sixteen. From, Maryland, brainstormed with his family in Virginia about ways to keep active and serve the community while he added that time. They settled on operation SOS supplies skies. How great is that SOS supplies over sky's the most recent flight carried three thousand gloves. Thousand had covers five hundred shoe covers fifty non surgical masks, twenty pairs of protective eyewear and concentrated bottles of hand sanitizer to winchester to help supply a hospital in nearby Woodstock Kim's flight instructor said, he was blown away when his student I proposed the project especially since he knew how disappointed he had been at the cancellation Lacrosse for Tj to be more concerned with the needs of others in his melancholy state just reiterated to me how amazing this young man is I agree mazing. I'd like to take any of you who are so kind when you're gonNA buy something on Amazon. You went to my website Betty in the Sky Dot Com you can even book market make sure your ad blockers off just in case and I, like to see what people buy and it supports the show doesn't cost you any more this last month somebody bought on a noodle road Beijing to Rome. That's right after my travelling heart somebody else bought a mighty paw hands-free dog leash and in another person bought a baseball cap that said it's my effing birthday, but it didn't say F. Ing. So anyway, if you be so kind think about going to bed in the sky dot com, do your Amazon shopping and I. Thank you so very much. Since I'm not flying and I've been spending some time with my realtor. Here's a little story from him. took. All the doors off the hinges it was. In the middle of remodeling. Cars drive thought we were totally clear. So we walk in, we're looking around we get into the master bedroom around get into master bathroom. Painters they're doing work on the house. We get into the master bathroom. And There are two in their man woman and. She's sitting on the toilet. Painting. Irving thought she was. Just was trying to get into tighter phasers area. And we're all in the master bedroom just standard mash bathroom just like. Kind of get everyone at the same time including the. People here, season veteran. So. embarrassed. I, guess like Occupational Hazard. I recently had to get some dental work done and. It's a kind dental work where they keep believing you in the office and. I forgot my phone. So I'm just sitting there and they had two magazines I never gonNA look at magazines like paper magazines anymore used to get on the airplane all the time. It's kind of fun you know checking out celebrity stuff. During and you know something different and. I saw an ad and you know I guess I don't see ads that much And I like it experiment. There was an ad Ferdinand share that tear removal, but it was the said leg mask they were like this this. moisturizing. exfoliating, hairy, moving. makes hair grow back less mask for your legs in his green. I thought. So next time I was at the story but I'm GonNa try that Green leg mask. The thing I liked about it is I like the idea of maybe the hair growing back. less. So maybe you don't have to shave your legs as much because you were saving your legs is Kinda Hassle and you gotta do it all the time. So I got my little mask and It was before it's going to take a shower and said, you know put a thick coat. So I put a thick coach all over my. Legs, and then I thought well Matt Myself Put some under my arms. Okay. Put someone in mckean lines ten minutes okay. I'm good to go and I'm just like doing some stuff around the bathroom gotta wait for ten minutes and then I And then Of course wouldn't you know it? There's somebody at the door. and it's like At the well, I'm not expecting anyone and I got a bunch of green goop over my body I'm naked. With Green Goop is not like I can easily get rid of it and get out there and I can't see from where I am and I'm not GonNa try to look naked and so I'm thinking well wherever it is is going to go away like. Maybe. Somebody from Amazon. Delivering a package but I do have my place on the market but they're supposed to call or text before they're coming and that would be like the worst house condo showing ever. Here's the person naked with green goop over her legs..

"So I was talking to a friend on the phone who's flying and working We have just a few international flights. But you know people are in various stages of. Apprehension in fear depending on where they're coming from, you know maybe somebody else got it. You know and under some people. Are acting like everything's just normal. So there was he told me. So my friend told me on the phone that there was a guy on his flight to Europe and he had mask and gloves and You know you asked him if you want something to drink and the guy sometimes they give too much information you're just asking what they want to drink and the guy goes No. I'm not going to drink anything for the whole flight because I don't want to go to the bathroom because that's gotta be the Germany is place on the plane. So I don't want anything to drink and my friend was like. Okay but you know it's a long flight. You know. All right. Whatever goes on keeps you know doing his business. Service so later on in the flight, he hears screams more than one person screaming by the bathroom. So he goes running over there. You know like, oh no, what's happening? The guy who didn't want drink anything had to be like a nine hour flight. You're going to have to some point even if you don't drink anything. So I, guess this is what these. Figured out afterwards is that the guy didn't want to go in the bathroom but he had prepared. Before. You got on the flight. You know I like I like a passenger who prepares but in case he had to go to the bathroom you wanted another layer of protection so he had must have made it before he got you know made it at home he had a trash bag with. Host cut out kind of like used to have is A. Halloween. Costume as ghost at it was a dark like big black trash bag with holes cut out, but I guess in his apprehension and his fear he forgotten. Forgot the lock, the door or maybe he didn't forget he just didn't want to touch anything else you know touching as little as possible. So here comes this girl she comes up opens the door and not only are you surprised when you open the door and there's somebody in there but he's facing the toilet So she could see a bum and a bag, and so she's thinking that something kinky like what's his the? There's a bag man but showing. So she screamed and then he screamed because he realized you know showing and whatever. But so. It was like crisis averted just crazy scared bathroom. bag hooded naked bomb guy. I don't know if you guys heard this officials telling the new rules after reemerging from lockdown but I thought this was funny. Old New. More and more of Americans returning to this new normal right here. This is Wyoming welcome to the Strip club. It's reopening with a mask on clothes, off? Party? Rent Oh, this is a redfin that forgiving directions on new rules for tennis courts. This poor woman, every player unless they're from the same household has to bring their own tennis balls so that you don't touch other people's tennis balls. With your hands, you can kick their balls, but you can't touch them. I'm going to blush. Sorry. Of course if you're. If you're playing with someone in your household, you can touch those tennis balls. to avoid. Avoid confusion between WHO's balls who you can use a marker like a Sharpie to mark out to put an extra put someone's initials on them. Just like I was looking to pay the security behind. Thank God for mass. Africa but you know when Lindsay, this Clinton just reminded me. In beings and we can laugh again here. Laugh. Is Making me happy. So what do you think land? The best thing in the world. The back that. Vicinity aware on from like I would've been crying. Over the weekend it's really ridiculous I think that people are trying to figure out how to put these rules in place where they're putting plastic bags or people's hands coming to their restaurant or whatever. You WanNa call those things and having people mark excellent their balls like I think people are just trying their best to have people live their lives wasn't those things get you? Despite, any was telling me, I don't remember what she said was what the pilot did really pissed off, but she was really angry with this pilot and sometimes a lot of room in the cockpit. So lots of times the pilots suitcases are in our closets. Or maybe one of them is or two anyway This fight and it was really mad at this pilot. So this other fight tends tell she was just on the flight she wasn't the one doing this This, fighting it took leftover steak. In started, rubbing all over the pilots suitcase. Fighting who's telling me this? I was kind of naive and dumb and I'm kind of thinking. That's not bad. So as suitcase smells like steak like I get it why? Why. Would you stake all over a pilot suitcase? You know like? Like. I. Don't know a guy. I was at a loss I, just looking at her and she goes don't get it and I'm like, no, it's international flight so he has to go through customs and. Immigration and You know they have the the dogs down there that's out Food Drugs. So that Little Beagle when apoplectic when? I Come strolling through. Barking jump in, and that pilot was going to have to spend a lot of time. We call it agriculture yet get pulled over the side of the dog smells anything. So they were going to be going through every single thing in his suitcase. Thought was a little mean. I got another gift via the email from lister listener named Steve He. Hi Betty. You haven't mentioned Herman in a while and when I was listening the other day I thought about it. I also thought about my trip to London in May of two thousand nineteen and I realized I never sent you pictures of toby and I'm thinking. Whose Toby is saw? These pictures of toby and then he said you inspired me to get a copy cat turtle and take on my travels and I named him toby that turtle and I was thinking wow, he's taking a turtle. So I I'm thinking. You know just a little turtle. The take you know like? Flat. Stanley. So he sent me different pictures of. Of toby, the turtle and wrote. Before, I went to England asked you for a restaurant recommendation and you told me Nando it's funny. I like Nando. Nando says a expensive cash casual hot sauce chicken place but I like it. He said, I think you're at least I could do send you a picture of toby, the turtle stuck to their sunshine. But this is what I couldn't believe when I looked at the pictures I bought it was just a turtle, but he actually has a turtle with suction cups glued on.

"Him know is it like to be data to watch? Campus. So we're having. Riots and protests and demonstrations and looting, and it's Reminding me of the Nineteen, Ninety, two Rodney King La Riots and I was right in the middle that. I mean There was a time in my life when I was kind of in the middle of things don't like that anymore. I'll tell you it's a lot less stressful this way but I was living in Los Angeles and I had worked three trip got home and I basically. Found out everything when we landed that everything gone crazy I didn't know what to do when I decided out drive home to Westwood I had a roommate at the time. And accounted eleven buildings on fire going from the airport to Westwood didn't know what to do. I was dating my handsome actor. Boyfriend at the time and he was like just come over here I was in Westwood you isn't in Hollywood but he was in a real nice building with doorman and painted ceilings and They immediately hired an armed guard they had security. So he's just drive over here. So. Pack some stuff because we're going to stay there for a while because we knew there's GonNa be curfews and you didn't know what was happening was like the city was burning down. So Joe over there counted and I remember and there's a long time ago nineteen ninety-two. Twenty three buildings on fire I counted driving from my apartment to his apartment and. Then is crazy. I get a parking. There was A. Is A streetlight right before you turn to go into where the guests parking was for his building and I pulled through and right after I pulled through somebody carjacked somebody else at the gun and it was like Gosh I couldn't even meet. Thank goodness. I had a crappy car. Sometimes a crappy car. He is helpful. So. to the building and the actor boyfriend They that building they all on top of things. They had meetings once a month and he was like the are his floor guard and Yellow Orange Vest. This was a place to be for when I all the ship was going down so You know we. Played House performed as S- kind of fun. You hate to say anything fun. It was. But one of the funniest things was actually it's funny we A high-rise building you lived in on my Gosh I've got to tell you this this high building you lifting. I didn't know people live like this. So they had the doorman they had the painted ceilings and the lobby had an underground parking and You gave the car you drove up, they took the car, and in every time they brought your car out. It was freshly washed like what who lives like this. Anyway. Well, I did for that time and anyway. We, go up on the roof they just pretty rooftop area and we could we could see. His you had a really nice view of La but man, he can just see fire after fire after fire and the building was was a good place to be very secure and get this. Like, two dogs showed up the dogs instinct said, that's a place to be. So we took the dogs and. During the time found the owners later but One of the things I wanted to say and I I do like to keep everything light and breezy on the podcast I was nineteen ninety-two. With the police beating up Rodney King and. Seems like a long time ago. Still.

"I heard somewhere that a first passengers on any hot air balloon was A. Get this. A sheep, a duck, and a rooster. The first passengers on a hot air balloon in seventeen eighty three were a sheep, a duck and a rooster. It sounds like a joke. You know a sheep duck and a rooster go into a bar but instead they went into a hot air balloon and you know when they took off, they were probably like. What INSERT, expletive here. Doesn't imagine the net crashed fifteen minutes later. Out the, sheep the duck in the rooster. Okay. Well I might be moving been getting my place ready to sell and It's going to be pretty much a lateral move I'm going to move from a one bedroom place to a different one bedroom place. So I I it's gonNA sound silly a reason to move but I want a bigger pool We have a small pool with this condo complex aunt I like to swim laps and I like to like sit at the pool and right or whatever project I'm doing, and then swim and then right and swim and the pool kind of a why shape. So there's not like a place where you can swim laps in in the it's small, and then the rope is right down the middle. So we have a lot of kids in their complex so. Three kids and it's Lap Switchable it's just I just have to leave and lots of times get like a few laps in, and then here comes five kids and You just can't do it. It'd be different if there was like a part of the pool where you could swim laps well, they're kicking and screaming and jumping and but also you have to have put the chain backup and then I anyway, it seems like a dumb reason to move but moving because I, want a bigger pool but in the process of getting my place ready to move you know painting ceilings and I'm polishing floors, cleaning kitchen tiles and buying things to make it look Nice 'cause you know for you, you don't see things. A lot when they're you know and then you start looking in your you're like, oh That trash cans old and that toilet brush. Way Old. not that that New People are going to be looking at that but it's like I'm going to be moving into a new place in I'm sorta like spitting up the place in like staging to make it look good right and so like that toilet. Brush is seen better days but like ceramic tall cylinder that the brush goes in and I hate waste, it's not that I'm cheap. I just hate like why put this in a landfill? What can I do with this tall ceramic cylinder? So, put a plantain it. I put up cactus at the top. So now it's a, it's a poopie plant. A poopie potted plant. I heard on a podcast something. I hadn't heard before that pilots. Aren't supposed to take Viagra twenty four hours before a flight. I've never I've never heard. It ever discussed You know we're not supposed to drink. Eight. Hours sometimes ten hours sometimes it's twelve hours but never heard about BIOGRA- so I looked it up and it's not twenty four hours it's. hours, they're not supposed to have taken by Agra. six hours before a flight and it said because it may result in confusion or cockpit? Distraction. May result in confusion or cockpit distraction. So I was thinking. That if I went up there to give them their coffee or their meal and they had a stiffy, it would distract me. Like, to thank any of you who are so kind when you're going to buy something on Amazon, you took the extra second or two to go to my website that he in the sky dot com, click on the links to my books and anything you buy get a little percentage of it doesn't cost you any more. It supports the show and I like to see what people by somebody bought a spike ballgame set and a passport to your national parks and a book called nine. GOBLINS. So just go to my website but in the sky dot com and I think you so very much. We used to stay in a lovely classy hotel in Joe Burke in a great part of the town. The management were very good to the airline crews they accommodated, and once a month they would hold a complimentary cocktail party for all the cruise who happened to be in the hotel on that day. One trip I was lucky enough to be there on the special night. So it's enjoying the free wine and food with the other airline. So hotel staff I got chatting to the general manager and took the opportunity to apologize to him for a couple of recent debacles that involved our airline. The I was a room party which got a bit out of hand when some of the crew decided to put the couch out of the window on the twentieth floor and seated on the Generous Ledge there there they relaxed in the fresh et with their drinks watching the sunset that was fine until someone decided that it would be fun to set light to the aforementioned so far. When the blaze got out of control, the flaming furniture was jettisoned down the side of the hotel and into the pull. The second event was a cat fight that occurred between a couple of ladies who had over imbibe too little. They were dressed up to the nines in short skirts and in the very swish bar on the fast flaw. Whenever they argued about ended up with a wrestling match on the floor of the bar that would probably have attracted much less attention had both of the girls being wearing panties. The general manager was very gracious about both incidents Amelia boggles we're gonNA find again could be pleased. Let.

"I have a lot of work to do during this whole quarantine. So it's not like I'm lacking of things. Do I WANNA make sure I'm still getting exercise. So walking and I have any number of things I do in between Working on the podcast or writing or typing, or editing or audio. Books all those things. I have like. I have a whole kettle bell workout. Just online like thirty Keto Bay Bell exercises and I liked the kettle bells and. Then doing them a long time but it's on my IPAD and I. Think I think it's been a year now and your mind sort of decide something is called a certain thing and then you don't really see what it really is. So that's just like when I did that terrible mistake. I still get people because people find the PODCAST, go back and listen, and then they still they haven't heard them in order. So they don't realize that I apologized in the next episode but I get people saying. It's gander where the planes land after nine eleven gander you kept saying grander. But I in my mind had decided that's what it was called doing these kettlebells. Exercises and I thought the the one. My favorite one was the gobble squat. And I always got to laugh too. It's funny that they call this gobble squad and I just realized now that it's a goblet. Squat. which makes so much more sense but it was kind of like want on you like that exercise so much because it had a funny name, the Gobble Squat and it's A. Goblet Squat. I had mentioned in the last podcast that been having trouble getting masks. Actually been washing out my mass that you're not supposed to reuse but of ordered masks. But none of them have come and I did make a mascot of a bra but slightly embarrassing. Wearing a bra and your face. I made myself a hot pink mask that I kind of made that stitch. Tinsel it. I just use that stuff for him that you iron and I thought it was pretty good I thought it looked pretty good and I was at Walmart checking out in thing just fell off. so much for my sewing skills but anyway, I was saying in the last podcast that I have that full face snorkel mask and you know that's sustainable you can wipe it down but it hasn't gotten that bad there that I really need to feel like I, need to wear my snorkel mask in public but get this this news. There's days that are really long, and then sometimes you get an email with a picture or video that just makes you laugh out loud and I got this I got pictures and videos from listener Rocko. And Rocko said you. You mentioned the snorkel mask as a personal protective device. Well, I've got you one better. He said, I wore my scuba gear to the post office. That's one way to go bring your own air. Loved it. Well that's it for this episode of Betty in this guy with a suitcase I hope you'll join again next time. "I'm quirky. People may say odd but I love and experiment. So I was talking to this flight attendant in the Galley and said in passing that my knee was kind of bothering me and she got all animated and she was like Oh. Oh I gotTA show you this. You've got to put oil in your belly button and she goes to get her phone and I was Kinda like what? Does your belly button have to deal with your knee. So she gets her phone and she shows me this article and You know it could all be punk a lot of stuff on the Internet is but anyway, the article said that the first part created after conception is the naval and that all of our veins are connected to our belly button. So it's kind of like the focal point of the whole body and by putting a few drops of essential oils in your belly button in massaging before you go to bed, you can have all these positive health consequences like Almond oil for glowing skin mustard oil for detoxification castor oil for knee pain and I was like well. A medic get me some oils for my belly button. So, this guy flight attendant gets up from crew rest, and then we start having a bunch of talk about oiling belly buttons and I was saying, well, you know I'm ignored my belly button for my whole life and the girl who's He now, an expert on oiling her belly button was like well, I have a very aromatic belly button. And the guys flight in the straight guy was like I'd be afraid in my belly button smells like so I had that same I already knew we had chatted. Earlier that I, my next trip that same guy was going to be on my trip. So I I ordered my. Oils from Amazon is hard to say ordered my oils ordered oils from Amazon and some of them showed up in the mustard oil was taking forever and I was kind of like where is my mustard oil? My belly button needs mustard oil. And the reason it took so long because it was coming from India. So anyway, I had some of the oils in so I made him a mixture of almond and time because it said that time was too strong. So you had to put it in like a carrier oil, and that time was good for like your heart and blood pressure and the Albans supposed to be for your hair and your face. So I put it in little travel container. And now we're in briefing for my next trip and so we have. Eight other flight attendants who haven't heard of this. Hot. Galley Bellybutton, Talk. I say to the guy flights in it, I'm like Hey I've got a present for your belly button and the whole room was like. As you know those those words don't normally go together. You know I've got a present for your billy button. later on I was talking because then I had to explain you know. About this oiling your belly button and I was saying you know when when I get that mustard oil I probably. Probably best. Oil Your. Belly button with mustard oil. When you're alone otherwise, there'd be kind of like O.`day..

So I told him the whole story she loved. And I love audience plus I had all that time to kill. So he to me, he loved the whole story is laughing and laughing and I show them little hermit and he goes you aren't going to believe it but I was on Saint Farts and it was doing some work for these people and they this big tortoise came up a big. The showed me a picture of it was like A. Two feet long tortoise and he goes We were feeding it and we named it Herman. "The longest descent without a parachute. I was talking a little bit about how? How Quickly things can go from bad to good or good to bad when you're traveling especially traveling someplace it's Not As tourist friendly. Okay. So I was in Playa Larga and. I'd had that bike taxi that could barely find the place that I was staying and I had walked into town and then I ended up getting some dinner and dark and I thought okay. When might have some trouble and all the bike taxi I did notice I was there a few days they were there during the day and then at night they didn't seem to be any taxes or bike taxis so I didn't really have a choice as. Just, walking home and I, have luckily one of my Casa particulars and some listeners have suggested a I'll probably do that every time from now on like maps dot me were you can download a map ahead of time so you can use a gps when you don't have cell service because there was no self service and there was no cell service in Cuba. So now I've got my. Maps in hoping it's going to be right 'cause not always right in some of these places either and so I'm walking and it's dark and. I just had my little cell phone and. I don't know I just. I'd only been in Cuba for like like four days at that point you don't know you don't know how safe it is and I'm thinking Oh. I don't know if I should be walking when the pitch dark by myself I mean. It's the. I know how to get back and I was a little worried. It turned out that place was very safe but the very next night after I'd had a great day going to cave in this day and snorkeling and It had had dinner and now walking home and you know the night before it was so nervous about being dark and I know where I was going and so what a difference a day can make. So the very next night I'm walking path at that there were street lights, but they were all burnt out in this one section. So it was dark dark dark, and that's why I had been nervous the night before. So then the second night all the sudden I realize. Look because those. Were burnt out and because you're in a little town in in Cuba out in the middle of nowhere and next to a national park where there's no lights whatsoever the night sky was lit up like. I I I don't know if everyone in the world has seen a really beautiful night sky, but it will take your breath away. I could see the Milky Way. So I turned my cell phone off there was. Showing my way back and I was just stood there looking up and I was like. You know it's just shows how small we are in big universities and what how much beauty there is just in the darkness. So here one night I was afraid. Afraid for my own safety and the next I stood out there probably for a half an hour intentionally in the dark staring at the beautiful glorious night sky. Well. That's about it for this episode of Betty, in the sky with a suitcase I hope you'll join me again next time. So we can travel around the world together and I will be doing some traveling. If all goes well, I'm hoping to go to this little island cold Sabiha. It looks like Saba, Saba, you've probably seen it. It's a lot of movies as kind of like an exotic island not that many people go there. There aren't any beaches there. So many people don't go there or so many people haven't heard it that earlier in the episode I was talking about such a good idea to download the maps dot meeting case you don't have cell service well. See by isn't in maps dot. But. Hopefully, I'm going there and I'll tell you all about it in the next episode. Thanks. Bye..

What are the interesting things about traveling? especially, traveling alone or traveling to a developing country Just. So often things can go from really good to really bad and then back good again like like. It's like, wow wow you can have some ups and downs I. Mean some days it's like all up you know, and then you'll have other days that are more of a challenge I was in symphonic. Cuba and It's a less frequented by tourist town and it used to be French and used to be a whole lot of money there and I was staying in what I thought was the nicest hotel I stayed at in Cuba. Casa particular. So AIRBNB This was. A old mansion like beautiful stunning I. Think it might be one of the prettiest hotels ever stayed in anywhere and I must have been decorated an artist because every inch of the place was stunningly beautiful like everything. There were all these vintage items it was. They had like classical music playing it was you know how in colonial times and other parts of I've seen in Latin cities They used to have they used to build a house or mansion or whatever you WANNA call it surrounding at outside terrace. So the inside of the building is outdoors and like the main. Function of the place, and then you have the rooms around that in this where I was staying The whole block is like one building kind of like a Brownstone is connected. You know. So it's it's you don't have any space between you and your neighbor and I just couldn't get over how pretty it was. So then I'm out for the day and I have been going down to walk down to this beach area kind of a long walk, but I like to walk and I'd like to stop when walking. So my intention was to walk down there even though it was quite a distance and. One point I got pretty hot. So I had taken a bunch of bike taxis at different times and. Taking the bike taxi in play and. The guy says to me, do you have a picture of the house and I'm thinking I've never been there? I have a picture of the house. You know because he couldn't find it it ask three people along the way and A. Bike taxi that was quite long like three dollars, and then I took that bike taxi where I went all the way like forty five minutes uphill. Trinidad and I- overpaid bike taxi like twenty dollars I think it was more like ten. So I knew how much bike taxis cost and I also know that you should negotiate price before you get in a taxi or anything like that. But I knew I was only going maybe. Ten more blocks. So like how much could it be two dollars three dollars so this guy stop and said, do you WanNa taxi and I was like, okay short because you know I was getting hot and I'm figured out you know. Who makes the money and I'll get there a little faster. So I get in the bike taxi and when we get off, he says that's eighty dollars. Like, it is not eighty dollars. I mean it's ridiculous. He's like it's eighty dollars and. You need to pay me eighty dollars now again no I mean there's no way that the guy was trying to take advantage of me trying to rip me off any start yelling and screaming at me say, I'll take you to the police right now I'll tell you the that's how much it cost like I took A. A forty minute bike taxi in paid twenty dollars you can't tell me a five minute bike taxi is eighty dollars. She's like that was another city and this city. That's what that's what it is. Our. Bullies right now and he's screaming at me. Now I'm sweating and it was so uncomfortable and. I I needed to get away from him like. Just the whole thing over and was going to overpay and say look. I'll give you twenty dollars which was like four times five times the price that should have been I needed to get rid of away from the screaming maniac and he's like, no, it's against you know. We can go to the police right now it's a it's sixty dollars is not sixty dollars I eventually gave that guy because he would not stop. Screaming at me, I actually gave him forty dollars. I felt really bad about it because I knew he took advantage of me and yeah, forty dollars that much to me but still you know It's wrong. Anyway. Was Not, pleasant situation and So he had gone from staying in this beautiful hotel to nail this. Low Point and then I was walking back which I wasn't getting back on another bike taxi in an and a couple other people who had sort of witnessed. It said you know it shouldn't have been more than five dollars and that guy's crazy and basically apologizing to me and I you know I, got myself calmed down and walking back and I see the lights on a rooftop restaurant and I thought Oh that looks like a nice place and then the. There were these really nice musicians and they were was the music for a lot of the last previous podcast and after that, they sat down at my table these fun guys and we talked for like an hour and a half, and then I was on a real travel high because I really enjoyed the conversation and the music and the food. So you know I went from that bad getting taken advantage of to now a real nice tryst experience. You know really talking to the locals then I was walking back and I came across it vintage store and I found out a license plate that I could buy own at licensed places like school. And so I'm on this. I'm practically skipping back to my beautiful hotel have had a great night talking to locals. I've found my license plate who and I get back there and the league. Ring the Bell. Lady, let's be and I was like it's so beautiful and here, and there was a couple a little bit older than me couple from Switzerland and they're sitting there and sulking and I said, isn't it beautiful and here at so pure? It's just so pretty and the guy says, we don't think it's nice here. and. I was like. What he goes, this is not nice this this there is no window in our room and I was like, well, there's no window because there is the buildings are connected. So there can't be a window..
