"Eden park. It's 5 past 6. Andrew Dickens is next. Sports with John Ryan funeral directors continuing a family tradition since 1881. Youth told zippy Christchurch, time saber traffic. It's the business hour with Andrew Dickens and my HR on news toxic V you talk to me. Please welcome into the program's 7 minutes after 6 on the way Patrick Somali on the way rowena Dunkin on agricultural stories Stuart Williams is going to join us from maiko asset management. Here we can turn nit migration statistics are a slow moving disaster, which will end up Brady about the funeral. It has seen some coverage of the funeral on the telly, taking The Crown off the gang car engine and putting it on a chapel. I'm happy about that. There was a lot of speculation in my house at that crown had been super glued on to stop it from actually falling off the gun carriage, but that proved that it was not. We must just be a heavy crown, Emmy a more with that with ender Brady a bit later on. But right now, let me introduce you to the concept called New Zealand rural land management. It's a company. They are now eyeing up getting some money from overseas. This is because it's slow, local interest in their products. The company said it had a strong increase in share value. It listed on the nzxt and 2020. The kiwi's just uninterested. So the chair of New Zealand rural land management is rob Kendall and he joins me now. Hello, rob. Hi, hello. Great, so tell me what does New Zealand rural land management do first? Well, what we do is we buy rural land that lease it to finals to operators who not have to operate times really well. And they can spend their capital on what they need to do to improve the land and improve their stock. And we understand at least to them. So that's the simple model and we could expand we have expanded pretty rapidly in the time since we've been listed, but we could expand much more rapidly if we could get more capital. Exactly. So this is very much like helping fish home buyers as well. You know, it's hard to get the money together to get enough land to actually start a blob, but you can do this for them by leasing it to New Zealanders. Exactly. And the disappointing thing Andrew is that we've got all these clearly set fans and New Zealand. There are all these people who say they don't get enough opportunities locally. But here is rural named it's a hot investment class internationally. You can't get anything much safer than good quality farmland. And yet there's really very low interest from the New Zealand institutions in investing in this sort of stuff. And we just wanted to draw attention to it in our annual report. So we left with if we want to expand, we're going to need to recruit other seas capital, which was not what we should have to do. No, but is this a bit of a trick? Because everyone hates our land being sold to foreigners. I mean, we sit this up partly because a lot of New Zealand land farmland was going to foreigners, but if we can't get the support from local liners, and again, I'll come back to those kiwis. We can get the support. Then what choice do we have? So what's the structure of the investment? Is there a series of units or one? No, that's just to share on the stock exchange. You can buy as good as you want, or as much as you like on the stock exchange. And then you use that capital to then fund the buying of property to thinly sun. Yeah, that's right. And we've got some very good farmers racing and we've got a lot of new young farmers and not just Thomas. We've got people who want to do vineyards, wanted to do watchers want to do all that sort of thing. This really suits their business model and investors in New Zealand particularly those funds should be getting behind it, but they're not. And what sort of return would it investigate? Well, the shine in Europe is about seeing the moment between four and 5%, which isn't top, but it's not all that bad. And of course, there's capital growth in the value of the land. So it's been a good investment option. Do you have regular chain of land or not? No, we have to be really long too. We're not traders. We aim to be really long-term owners of land and that stability is really important to us. So with a four or 5% return and with what you're doing and helping a young New Zealanders get into family, there's a sense of altruism about this invincible, doesn't it? Look, it's a commercial, it's a commercial venture, but I think a lot of commercial ventures you have some kind of process behind it as to what sort of thing you would like to encourage. So I wouldn't portray those altruistic, but it's certainly consistent with New Zealand's economic interests. Very good. So how do we get in touch with you? I want you to just get out of your broker and tell them

Weather with ryman healthcare, pioneering a new way of retirement living. How many cloudy for your Tuesday we are making our way to a top of 20 degrees in Christchurch, chance of an afternoon shower or two northerly will turn southerly this evening in down to 8° tonight. Tomorrow match cooler, the maximum just 13° with rain, clearing to a cloudy afternoon. With thanks to smart grass, the artificial grass that looks like the real thing, Canterbury mornings with John McDonald with you now. Fly from our new home in the center of Christchurch. With John McDonald and smart grass, the artificial law that looks like the real thing news dog's head be. 7 past ten that numbers are 882 90, we're talking today about the modern learning environment. The curse that is spread through schools up and down the country. Where we have these bands with truckloads of kids and teachers trying to keep on top of it. And bean bags and tents and all sorts of wonderful things encouraging kids to explore. Explore their learning. Tendencies, discover all sorts of wonderful things. And we heard from one person last hour who was teaching in the school got out of it because of it. But the Ministry of Education to end up 6 years ago and said, we're going to convert the hall into a classroom. We're going to put 80 year two kids in here. And we're not going to do any sound proofing. You should see the noise was horrific after 22 years teaching on the well she said she'd never gone home with a headache. And she certainly did after moving into that kind of setup. And so it's in the news today because the New Zealand initiative, which is that you've got to take pay attention to because people like doctor Eric crampton and disg, when they're all part of this. And they're coming out today because they have discovered that the Ministry of Education spent billions on these modern learning environments. But did no research beforehand or no, you know, work beforehand to find out how effective they are. We have been adopted elsewhere. And since spending the money has done evaluation to find out if it's making any difference. And I thought from the start, they were disaster. I was on a school board for 6 years. And I felt like a bit of a lone voice and I started to wonder whether or not I was actually not saying the point. Well, I feel vindicated today because the New Zealand initiative has come out and said, there have been an idea logically driven experiment, but I'm not, I think they've been a bit too generous here because when you don't experiment. You do some research you have the numbers you have the data to actually come up with a conclusion. But when the New Zealand initiative asked the Ministry of Education for that, a data number said, well, we don't have it. So just ideology running wild. And so that's why we're talking about the model learning environment and hearing stories from people who have pulled kids out of public school and gone private. Because the kids aren't coping. So love to hear your views on this. Do you think it is shameful? First up, that the Ministry of Education has poured all this money billions into modern learning environments, but did not work beforehand to find out how they might have worked elsewhere. And has done no one valuation since. That is shameful. Do you agree or disagree with that? And what experience have you got of the modern learning environment as a parent or a grandparent? Or as a teacher? Love to hear your experiences. Good or bad. Oh wait, hundred. 80 ten 89. Get out, rich. Morning, John. Good thank you. Yeah, very good. Nice to know, John, the Ministry of Education's trying to dumb down to society. I mean, you can look at these big classrooms and there's this kid submit that I just following behind and not getting the property education they need because they say the justify that pouring a lot of money into this kind of ideology is the right thing we're going forward when it's actually the wrong one. You know, I think there will be kids who are coping, but that probably the kids that would come up with homeschooling the kids that were correspondent schooling. The kids that can certainly motivate themselves and don't feel a need to be directed by. A teacher, but they are the minority, aren't they? And when you look at it, when you're in a big cost from what they're like, that's probably one of the reasons there's kids going through that age and then they kind of transition into media and high school there. People, kids, students, they leave school because I feel like they don't feel like they're getting the support or teachers aren't really giving them the attention they need because there's so many kids around them all. If it get older like high school, like the Simon around that they don't feel like they're getting what they need, or. I've back in the

Only 7 plus 7 to Herbert grant Robertson's Carti's flying, he's worried that the election campaign will be undertaken in an atmosphere different to others and that there has been an escalation in intense threats and abusive MPs there may even actually public walkabouts next year egg patty leader David Seymour with the sun this morning to you. You're going to be walking about and standing on a corner. Oh, absolutely. Look, my time knocked on 15,000 people's doors we've had hundreds of street colder meetings. Hundreds of public meetings up and down the country. You ever experienced leamington's? Well, there was an equity and P that once actually got a lamington put on us forehead, but me know. Do you worry about the public? Not really. I mean, look, first of all, I think with grant, you've got it. These are part of the colleague of these concerns. You've got to take them out as well. But look at these things have happened before. New Zealand's first power update in 54 ended in a fistfight. Muldoon, caught in a fight with a bunch of people on Queen street once. And I think it was initially in P in the 90s. I can't remember if it was lockwood's special Jerry brownlee, actually had to climb out a bathroom window to escape a student process. I don't see Jerry brownlee climbing. You mentioned that it might have been lockwood Smith. Mike. But my point is that these things have happened. I don't think that we're at the worst time. And actually, if there are people who are in danger, the people I'd be worried about in our community are not politicians, but poor people run in jewelry stores right now. Precisely, my overarching viewer, I mean, first of all, I mean, you do take granted as word and you don't defend the craziness, but this is a global thing, but my overarching view is that the bar in this country is now so low. Socially and morally, that you do see kids running through windows and jewelry stores in malls. In the outworking of that, is there some angry frustrated people and that's going to play out in the election campaign, isn't it? Yeah, and look, you got to hold those two things at once. Certainly not justified. And what I'd say to people, you know, I've had a few people come up to me and have a go. So the politics ultimately adapt to persuasion. You can't be a good voter if you have to physically threaten people, even if it's only with lamingtons. You're more likely to persuade people against your cause. So it's not even going to work for you. But the second thing is we have a society we are consequences have been out of fish and under the current government for at least the last 5 years. You look at some of the discounts people have been getting on these sentences lately. And if you hear the view, this kind of behavior and bad behavior generally can be tolerable if you're agreed. Then don't be surprised if that starts to seep into the culture. And you get more of this type of behavior. That's why we need to bring consequences back into our judicial and legal system. While I've got you, why is the mahuta thing not a scandal? I think we have looked extensively into the various appointments. It's very difficult to say that they've done something wrong in any particular instance there is one where I believe it reaches the kidnap venule and acts as broad depth so the attention of number of journalists. I think that the inquiries that are now being done by the ministry for the environment and conservation are where we should look and we should take them at their word based on what they report. But certainly been a very slow burner and I guess we'll find out if there's any fire with that smokers after those reports. Appreciate your time, David Seymour, the act leader with us the Smalling ten minutes past 7. By celebrity creator laws of society then surround themselves with protection smacks of a liter socialist behavior. I think the David Seymour summed it up very well just a couple of moments ago. Now this past week has seen retreat routes in a breakthrough of the Russian front. This is at the oskol river, the important part of that being it opens up supply routes. Now president Xi of China are some embarrassing questions over the weekend of Putin and Uzbekistan, Modi told him it wasn't the time for war. However, they both still buy the oil cheap so I suppose you can take a bit of public heat as long as the money is still flying, don't you reckon, but surely things look to have turned significantly enough in Ukraine's favor to at least be a bit optimistic now. It is clear that one, the weapons supply from all over the world, but minding America is working in two, because it's working ground as being hoovered up, two leads to more of one, the better you do, the more will the world wants to hang in there and help. We've seen back and forth before, of course. We have seen Russia early look hopeless, only to read group and try other parts of the country, this though feels I think a bit different. The amount of Russian machinery lost destroyed or abandoned is getting massive. Surely when you're recruiting prisoners and promising them freedom for a war effort, you have scraped the bottom of the recruitment barrel. But if it all, if all of that is true so as this. How does it end? Obviously one way is for Ukraine to roll to the Russian border in chase everyone back home in the white flag goes up that will not be happening though. What will happen at some point is the idea of a broken deal, which is what many of us predicted from day one. Trouble with that is does zelensky want a deal or does zelensky want to wipe the floor with Putin trouble with the trouble is does zelensky actually have a choice given his only winning with the help of the world and the moment the world snuffs the deal they'll want to explore it so zelensky may have no choice at all. Presumably, the moment of deal is touted Putin's days must be numbered, so the next call is, does the world involve itself overtly or covertly in some sort of regime change in return for dropping of sanctions and the increase of oil flow or do they simply leave Russia a pariah state like North Korea? The last major prediction was that this would be bogged down for years. Russia picks a spot and just flattens it. They don't even seem capable of that anymore. One wonders 7 months in whether this will even go 12 months. And whether the face and shape of Russia within

Granted to the in criticized national for releasing it on a full new days newsday smacks of arrogant desperation considering the significant Friday 5 p.m. releases of reports damning him and the government he sits him. And I'm glad you did that because a lot of the media just slavishly reported that without stating the obvious and there is no one's more famous. Then this government and the 5 o'clock Friday damp. Morning Mike great to be with you. And could I find an MP in your caucus that would be unsettled by the fact that you haven't shown them the full up until report? No, we had a caucus meeting where I read them on the statements that we had and everybody was fully supportive and want to say I'm reinstated. So who is driving this? It's secret thing. Is this the media is concerned? Well, look, here's the deal. I mean, I wonder as many people genuinely to come forward, given they were serious and new allegations to do that, you've got to have a really confidential process and people agree in a trust us to do that. I involve Maria Jew based in the country to do the job. And then I ran my statements past you to make sure it's faithfully recommend representing those findings and being sensitive to people involved in it. Is there anything in there that if I read the report? In an unbiased fashion I go, that's interesting. I can see why I didn't make it public. No, I mean, what it is is you can imagine quite a lot of sensitivities and personal stuff involved, but the two things that I was looking for and have come through really clearly is Maria juke and quote that same didn't engage in the serious behavior that was alleged. And the second bet is that no one else came forward that considered themselves the victim of Sam's behavior beyond the King's College or the direction with the flatmate. And on that basis, you've got to say forgiveness second chances. This guy deserves to be back in parliament as an MP. You're aware this morning the woman and her father are not happy about this and they want the thing released as long as it's redacted. Would you consider that? No, because I think 14 other people involved and many others who made written submissions on the basis of confidentiality on the base of the report wouldn't be released. So Sylvia wood at president has been talking to those two complainants. And combine those investigation findings with them. But the basis by which people entered into this process was that they did so and high trust environment knowing that it would be confidential in the future. But did you get them to sign up to that based on the fact that that covers you off for releasing it publicly? No, no. Well, you know, it was just and we'll scrub your names out and know where it's more like a public and everyone can see it. Yeah, because basically people wouldn't come forward on that basis. Well, you know that. I don't investigation. Because the nature of these allegations are pretty personal and people who have from 20 years ago and people who want to be able to buy one as many people to contribute as possible to it. And that's what we achieved. We'll put it on them and say, look, if you're not prepared to come forward, that's fine, we're giving you the opportunity here are the rules of engagement. Take it or leave it. Yeah, and that's what we did. We said, look, I know you didn't. You said hey listen, if we keep it secret and quiet, you can sign up to this and we'll keep the details out of the public eye. That was the terms of engagement that you offered. No, I think what I'm saying to you is look, people participated on the investigation agreeing and trusting the report would be confidential because

"Just a team of really hungry individuals I think who have a little bit of a point to prove and a little bit of a chip on their shoulder. I'm rich wine there's news talks they've been used and sport 5 past three the weekend collectors Nick. Sports with John Ryan funeral directors continuing a family tradition since 1881. Weather with ryman healthcare, pioneering a new way of retirement living. Queer to watch 24/7 and the emit service forecast for Christchurch for the rest of Sunday will stay mainly fine at northeasterly breezes and we're down to a low of 7° tonight. Tomorrow high cloud with a few spots of rain possible, fresh northeast will ease in the evening. Tomorrow is high 21 with a low of 8 tomorrow night for Tuesday, cloud clearing and becoming fine in the afternoon, though, northeast easing in the afternoon and a high of 20. At a head to Wednesday, mostly cloudy with isolated channels developing in the afternoon, we still turn subtly in the morning. Wednesday's forecast high is 14°. So nothing the issues of the week, politics central on the weekend collective on news toxic B. I think it's gonna be you should say babe so we can't collect it with Tim roxburgh timber 12th long for another episode and Sundays mean that in just a moment we'll kick into politics central then from 4 o'clock we've got the health hub and it's one of those afternoons where we get the optometrist from specsavers on and they are here to answer your questions free of charge, oh 880 ten 80 that'll be from 4 o'clock so any issues that you have with your eyes with your eyesight make use of the free advice from 4 o'clock and then from 5 for smart money, we've got one of the team from harbor asset management, looking at how the New Zealand economy is faring with avoided recession, so what can we expect for the next few months as we wrap up 2022, but here's what's happening for politics central standing by and just a moment we've got Stephen Joyce former national party MP administer of fine art. He's written a piece about the COVID-19 rules being gone. So let the inquiry begin. So we're going to have a chair to him about that also. Those GDPs get his thoughts on that. Then we're going to go head to head a little bit after that. And talking about this press release, which has come out from the government about the protection of productive land, apparently over the last 20 years, about 35,000 hectares of highly productive land has been converted into residential development. Which doesn't seem to be the best situation. So whether or not this will be a good change, we will discuss that and get your thoughts and then later in the hour, I'll deputy political editor Jason walls will come to us live from Times Square in New York where the prime minister will be. And the UN as well. And how delicate things are with the situation with Russia and Ukraine given representatives of both those countries will be in New York, Jason wolff, before 4 o'clock. It's now 8 minutes past three. Politics central. Beer though, welcome along, how are you doing? I'm good, actually. Before the show I went to my daughter's school had a music recital because it's compulsory they learn an instrument. So when I watched some of the bands popping out some pumping out, well, I wouldn't say pumping out. I didn't see the whole show, of course. You know, nice to go along. Sitting in the same room as other parents, and they had kids. By and large, yes. Yes, but I mean, some of them have only been playing a musical instrument for less than 6 months, and they were in an ensemble and a way they go. Well, but more than 6 months. What's your door plane? She's playing the float. Oh yeah. It's a surprisingly tricky I can't get a note out of it. It's one of those things that she struggled with it for a bit, but now she's actually doing pretty well. But it's one of those instruments you think, I'll give that idea. And just keep blowing. And nothing comes out. And so yeah, she's a lot better than me. Good, good. I'm pleased she's got the food 'cause the flute's not like one of those ultra dorky ones. It's not the oboe, for example. Well, actually, the oboe, that's a beautiful answer. You're a fan of the other. Stunning. A stunning instrument. And actually, of interesting known factors that oboe players make the best kisses. Apparently, because the amber shop, very good. Good, good control. Good ambition. All right, well that's fantastic. Not exactly political news. Let's crack into some politics now. Tim and Tim. And Steven Joyce has mentioned just a moment ago, former national party AMP administrative finance and he joins us now to talk about an article which is he has written this is about COVID-19 rules that now that they're gone that the inquiry should begin Steven Joyce. Good afternoon. Absolutely. How are you? Good, thanks for joining us. In a way, Steven, now that we've had the COVID restrictions lifted. I've since with some people, they're sort of like, oh, let's just move on. How important is it that we have COVID inquiry and how soon? I think it's hugely important. And while we, while it's all still front and center and fresh, I think, because this is a massive thing that's happened to the country in the last two and a half years, the decisions that have had to be made or have been made, depending on your viewpoint. They have been more intrusive and more impactful on people's lives. As a result of this virus and probably anything else we can remember as a country anyway, there were certainly some big things in Christchurch, but for the whole country. Across the course, we had an inquiry commission of inquiry after the Christ the earthquakes. We had a commission inquiry into pike river and this I think is hugely important to have one just to a lot of people say it's a political perspective, either I shouldn't have one because of what it might be a worry for the government or I should have one because the opposition wants to feast on it. But actually, I think it's much more important to have one so that we carefully learn the lessons for the future, because some of the stuff we've never done before. What sort of questions do you should it should there be any limitations on the scope? How would you define it what questions? Well, I think one of the challenging things, well, I think it's got to be a lessons learned type scope, right? So what we do in the future, what will we do the same and what we do differently? Sadly, there's a pretty good chance that we'll strike another pandemic. At some point in the future, we will hear what we definitely will have on it sometime. We could even have a variant of this virus as early as say next winter. Hopefully not. And then of course it might be able to a hundred years. But actually, there's a whole bunch of things. I mean, one of the things that really interests me is the school closures and mask wearing on young people's education. Now, everybody's got serious. And but what are we good really important to get some empirical analysis and some of that still being collected right? But I think that's a really important one.

Call 8 180 ten 80 news talks it'd be. Your new toxic big Rebecca, good morning, paid Wolfcamp resident builder with you this morning, so just in the last year of the program, we had quite a discussion around the extinction of potentially non consented work or work not requiring a building consent under schedule one of the act and so I've just put up a link on my Facebook page for those of you on social media if you just search for Peter Wolfgang resident builder, you'll find it there. There's a link to an online tool. You can find the online tool directly by simply typing in Ken I build it dot gov dot in Z and it leads you through essentially a flow chart is to what you can build underneath within the scope of this new schedule one of the I've also I've just been doing a whole lot of stuff reading because I need to update my LPP. License is a licensed building practitioner you have to re licensed every year and you have to prove learning. Every two years, so I've been catching up on a bit of reading, which I do, fairly regularly anyway, and then one of the guidances that was released via the information sent out to lbp to license building practitioners about current building issues. So in the code words magazine, actually, this one's from October 2020. Neil, you're not going to feel great about this if you're still listening. So basically some guidance for lbp's around these changes to schedule one of the building act, the exemptions cover a wide range of building projects on reading from the document now. Both rule and urban settings, they include a number of projects, including detached, stand-alone builders, porches, verandas, carport, solar panels, it should mean that around 9000 fewer consents will need to be applied for each year and homeowners will save a combined $18 million in costs. This is obviously some theory. One of the new exemptions we're homeowners will more than likely need the help of experts is the construction of a detached stand-alone building such as sleep out. There's more information here. It talks about the type of that and then in the third paragraph, a closer look at sleep outs. Of course, all of the sleep outs will still need to meet the building code. It's important to remember that building the building consent process is only one part of the legal requirements for building a sleep out. All of the usual requirements around the durability of materials district planning, location of services and boundary restrictions still apply. This means a sleep out must be at least its own height away from a boundary, which will preclude many suburban homes from building to the maximum 30 m² without a consent, unless they want it right in the middle of their lawn. So that was that document came out 2020. Like I said, I've put up the link on my Facebook page, have a look at that. The other thing, if you're cruising

At the moment, it's 14° with thanks to smart grass, the artificial grass that looks like the real thing, Canterbury mornings with John McDonald with you now. Talking the issues you care about. Every morning, with John McDonald and smart grass, unofficial one that looks like the real thing use talks it be. It is past 11 our numbers are 882 90 and we are here till midday if you have just joined us. Good idea, good decision. You'd have a whole lot better from here, trust me. The last out we've had crisis middle candidate film major with a he's been taking calls and has been all sorts of things discussed. I thought it was interesting that he told us that Pauline cottage would be his choice for deputy mayor based on the current council lineup and then next Tuesday. David mites will be in with us as well to take your course. So that's next week and that's what's been on the show for the past hour. The first hour came to revisit what we started with this morning. I'll tell you what. So we at all story, you've got two mangrove mob members in court for sentencing on drugs charges. They both played a guilty to supplying a class a drug, which was methamphetamine in the sky. Guilty position for supply and participating in an organized criminal group. And one of them also admitted an additional charge of manufacturing methamphetamine. So they turned up for sentencing. In the sense the judge decided to do my read about this over the weekend, sending his judge decided that he would take into account the terrible childhoods, both of these guys at hand. And for the first guy he gave a 25% discount on sentence. On account of his childhood. And then the other guy gave him a 15% discount on his sentence. On account of his childhood. And that was on top of and now the 25% taken off for the early guilty place. Which meant that it had quite a lot of 45% discount on the sentence from maximum sentence to what the gut was a 45% discount. And so the question line from put out this morning that we were discussing in the first hour of the show is with you think we are great with the judge that a person's childhood should be a factor. In determining how long someone spends in prison if they commit a serious crime, or whether you're like me. And do you think someone's childhood is taught to be irrelevant? When it comes to making them face the consequences of getting involved in serious criminal activity, and we heard from one person in the first hour of the show, she didn't have the greatest of childhood to self sexually abused. Issues other issues within the family and she said that she could have very easily gone off the rails. But she didn't. And she agreed with me that it was so wrong that someone should get a discount on a prison sentence. Because of what they went through as a child. Some very happy to keep pursuing that conversation if you weren't able to get through in the first hour or you've just joined us. We'd love to hear what you've got to say. Look, you might have been beside you. Listen, regularly, I think it's terribly sad that people end up in gangs and that young people have seemed to think they have no other option, but to become a prospect, go into gang life, down the track, end up dealing drugs, manufacturing methamphetamine like these guys did. Terribly sad. But surely when someone gets to the point of being an adult, they can't what's the word for it. A troubled childhood to get a reduced sentence. When they come out serious crimes like these two did. So what do you think? Oh, 880 ten, are you happy for judges to consider someone's childhood when sentencing them to prison? What do you think it's totally irrelevant? I think it's totally irrelevant. What about you? Oh, 800. 80 ten ID is our number. I've been just in my soul for a day 'cause I need so much more hey Holly Smith has been around on the local music scene for 20 odd years we all recognize that voice she's got several number one albums and numerous awards to her name, but did you know it was growing up in Auckland that Holly was first introduced to music through the city's blues and jazz scene. In fact, the song you are listening to here, some person is a bit of a sneak peek at Holly's jazz, a song that she record in Brazil with these zimbo trio. The song will be part of Holly Smith sings jazz, which is coming to the civic this week, as part of a cabaret season, and Holly joins me in studio. Good morning. Hey, at the civic. How wonderful is it to perform in the civic? I love civic. It would be my favorite. I wish it was cheaper for me to play them more often. This is a bit of a return to your roots then. How, you know, you did quite a bit of jazz growing up. Is that right? Yeah, so I chose to go to northcote college on the shore because of the sort of significantly famous jazz kind of program that they get there under the leadership of these guys singer, who was the head of music in he had an amazing reputation and everyone who's gone through northcote college under him of, you know, I've become pretty successful through these things. Life in Haiti has been one of them. It was obviously joining me with this show. Cameron Allen, up number of jazz musicians who have cancer in North Carolina and to him. So yeah, I started singing when I was 13. Joined the northcote college big band, so I was doing Jason big band performances as well as establishing a smaller combo group that I had. So we had a lot of success through toad on a JS festival that initial just festival and went over to mainly several times for the jazz festival over the so yeah, it was a really, really great encouraging kind of place to be for me, especially with school and being in different kind of genres of music that I was including, you know, like sort of more blows and JS type styles. It's so awesome hearing about people coming out of school who had that one teacher who was so influential. I think always if I shouldn't say this, but you don't hear their lot. You know, quite lucky to have had that experience. Yeah, I was super lucky throughout school. I had several really good teachers. I think if it wasn't for me, my definitely wouldn't be where I am today, but they specifically took me under his wing was still very close friends. We see each other often and he'll, I'm sure be coming to the show as well. The appearance of your father into jazz? No, dad was more blows and rock. So he was blues and rock guitar. So that was around. I mean, to be fair, I actually, when I first went to a singing coach, but I was thinking teacher, she was sort of helping me with where and just basically warm ups and stuff. And she said, you know, she's like, what kind of music do you like? I'm like, oh, you know, I love James Brown. Like right now, and like it James and really hold on, and she's like, okay, so like jazz sort of stuff. Because she was a jazz singer. So being all of a sudden it went from more of the blues type stuff that I like. I didn't do really standard jazz songs. But it was a really great way to learn singing, you know, just her technique involved in. I used to not really listen to too much vocalists, so mostly

We've got the new moves on productive land of course to stop the urban sprawls 7 guy talk the sport in the commentary box Richard Angela Marie olds. They joined the gang as well. Now the question around gender and sport is do we want to debate this honestly, all with the go to mechanism of the age wokeness and denial. We've got to study. From the university of technology in Sydney published in the British journal of sports medicine arguing that scheduling of major sporting events is 6th. Treating women's finals as a warmup event to the means sends a message this second class citizens very might have sort of stopped this. Now the key weakness in their argument is basically exemplified by one of their examples. They say at the 2016 Olympics, the Rio Olympics 25 hours of competition with scheduled for means of ints on the Sunday of prime time viewing versus two for the women. The keywords there are would have thought a prime time. The argument over pay and reward can be added to this debate as well as you'd like. And what the people who do these studies never want to say or admit is sport at the highest level has very open, honest instruction criteria. Those who earn the most, get the most and that applies to funding, wages, and time on the telly. Scheduling based on gender, like paying based on gender, is a falsehood because what the public wants pays the bills. Occasionally women's sport does brilliantly, of course, the England women's football team in the Euros brought the nation to a standstill. I think we'll take as a nation ini middle in the Olympic Games doesn't matter what the gender is, but professional sport generally is paid for by ticket sales, bums on seats and broadcast rides. And broadcast rights are paid for based on the numbers that watch, we watch more men sport than women's. Will that change? Good at change, hopefully so, but for now it hasn't. So we are sky TV recently for ratings around the black films Australia games. It took them two days to drum up the most tragic press release I've seen in a while, a full page that said essentially nothing, and certainly didn't contain the answer to the simplest of questions how many people watched. And they didn't tell us, well, they tried to fudge it because guess what? The numbers aren't that good. Yes, girls seeing women play will help. Yes, women winning will help. But as we grow these sports, let's try and be a little bit on a show. We about the realities and what funds them. A means final is scheduled after a women's final because of the bottom line because of the numbers, because of the fact that what pays the bill, not academics, arguing a gender ideology. News of the world in 90 seconds. Now, the cues are not abated all weekend. The atmosphere was, it was surreal. It's something that I've never felt in my lifetime, and I'm pleased I was able to make it with my daughter. Even though it was a 12 hours wave, it was so worth it. I don't know where else I would be on a Sunday. Is it possible we might have hit? A little too much coverage. When it comes to events like yesterday's vigil, where Harry's there in his uniform, people are able to see the dynamic between him and William, it adds almost something of a soap opera drama to the coverage that people can't help but find fascinating. One is clear as they've come from far and wide and all walks of life. What we're seeing, of course, is the arrival of President Biden by seeing multiple arrivals of heads of state. And that just shows the diversity of her majesty the Queen. How much she cared for everybody and how she always said people matter, whoever they are, people matter. Just in the archbishop is optimistic. She's going to unite more global leaders, hospital than at any point in human history. That is perhaps a moment. I hope and pray that they will reflect on their own leadership. Meantime states are at the migrant miss we told you about last week where Ron DeSantis had a Florida was flying them up to Martha's Vineyard and dumping them. That's caught the attention of Gavin Newsom out western California and Ron DeSantis is doing is disgrace. It's almost monstrous, and I say that not lightly. I say that quite thoughtfully. He's got kids. I have kids. You saw those young girls with backpacks, no older than his children. And now he's using it to fundraise. Ron's having none of that. The governor of California sent a letter to the Department of Justice saying, you need to prosecute Texas and Florida governors and all I can say is I think his hair gel is interfering with his brain function. Finally, what are Yellen's retiring from movie business he's 86 these days since he's going to stop filmmaking after completing his 50th feature film, which will be a French film titled wasp 22. You can email Dickens at New York City at B dot co dot in Z so the question I have today is why New Zealand and so often seems not to consider the future when we make all our decisions. Of course the torchbearer for a future blindness was the Auckland harbor bridge that opened with four lanes and within two years it needed to be doubled in size. I mean, imagine back then, imagine if you opened up a bridge with say ten lanes and some rail lines and a cycle way. How good will would that be? Well, bridge like that didn't exist. It is a Sydney harbor bridge which opened in the 19 30s when Sydney had a million people. That was a project that acknowledged the future. They had cities grow that you will need more infrastructure, or can have a bridge did not even think about the future, all that cared about was today's budget. So, the disease have not considering the future is Beck. And I talk about this debate about cities swallowing productive family and for sprawling city housing. Now this whole thing is a no brainer, a policy need to stop over and sprawl. I am not sure that people understand how little of New Zealand can be found. It's just under half a million hectares. Now, a more sobering way to put that is that that's about 1.8% of our total land. A lot of New Zealand's land is rubbish. It's very pretty rocks with snow on it and swamps and deadlands. Less than 2% of our land is what they call arable, which means you can plant crops in it, or you can turn it into pasture land. Now, this is why we have farmed sheep. Sheep will live anywhere and can live on the more marginal limb that isn't part of that number. And this is why we spend a fortune creating pasture land for count. It's because we don't have a lot of land on the shaky islands. And even more sobering statistic is that in 1990, 10% of our land was considered arable. 10% of the available land considered arable. 30 years on, we have lost 8% of that land that our economy is based on. That land is now under houses. We've gone from 10% arable to 1.8% arable in 30 years. Growing land for crops is precious. Houses, you can grow them on anything. But we don't seem to grasp that. And with the housing crisis stretching into its third decade, we constantly hear refrains at the rural urban boundary needs to go. That our cities need to sprawl that we need to put houses on lovely productive volcanic land, but that will kill the goose that lays the golden egg. Because our economy is dependent on family and if we can't sprawl though, then where the new house is going to come from. And I guess the only way is up. To intensify, but we already know that. We already know that there is immense resistance to that as well. So look, it's time to get real. The future is calling. We need our farmland. We need more houses. We've got to start making decisions for the way our communities looking 30 years time rather than our immediate concerns and also start realizing that things are always changing. News talks it be we're on the countdown to the queen's funeral. And what an event this is going to be a televisual feast, the biggest thing that has ever come out of Great Britain. Possibly the biggest thing in the world. There's an awful lot happening. We will try and keep you up with all of it. And she joins us now, doctor Anna, hello. Hello. Hi. Oh, good. And you've been keeping yourself out of mischief in the last little while. Yes, yes. What about you? Oh, sorry, I just said to switch the mic off there because Tim had it. Tim had a coughing fit I'm not going to try and pretend not just yet. That's why when silent for a second. I was hiding it, but unfortunately, like a lot of people, there have been just an awful lot of bugs this off season. Anyway, so I'm battling the bugs, but we're getting through. I've had the coughing fit and now we're back in business. Okay, well, one of the things we wanted to talk about with you was the idea of letting children share their side of the story. And that parents fear this because they worry that they're going to lose control. Could you explain this a little bit more? Yes, it's interesting. It seems so simple, but it's one of the bits and the equation we were dealing with kids. That seems to get messed up quite a bit. And I think, in fact, research also suggests that parents really are concerned that asking the child for their perspective, they're going to lose control. Give the child too much of a voice and feel like they lose the appearance in Rome. Is this a perspective when it comes to just general family decisions or a perspective when it comes to bad behavior or and what sort of context does it, but because I would have thought it would be natural that if your child's done something wrong, then you would actually get their side of the story. It wasn't more something about just decisions around family life and that sort of thing. Well, I think you would think so, wouldn't you? But the common complaint that I hear from children adolescents and my practice is my parents don't listen to me. They don't ask me what's happened. And I'm really, really frustrated that they don't do that. And when I talk to parents themselves and so did you ask what happened? When you're looking at a cross section of processes in that discipline process, they often go no, I just assumed that little Johnny did X or Big Ben did X so we jumped a conclusions that get us into trouble. And kind of short, I don't really hinder how the children feel in that process. Okay, so actually that does surprise me. So is it just because parents are sort of so, I don't know, just the stress of parenting and things that are just making decisions all the time and they just don't, they're not taking the time or what do you think it is? Is it just

The people who can help the parents, et cetera, will have nothing to do with New Zealand tennis. It's been a sad old site. I remember years ago and I mean many years ago, 15 plus years ago, I had a conversation with Chris Lewis. And he was saying pretty much the same thing because my question was, what's the matter with New Zealand tennis? How is it we don't? I mean, we got courts. We got balls. We got records. It's not a particularly expensive sport. It's like any other sport you get a lot of kids playing it, but at some point they discover boys or girls or whatever and they go off and do their own thing or university studies or life or jobs. But what is the problem with us producing some half decent tennis players? And it all everyone I've ever talked to says the same thing comes back to the organization and the running of the sport. And look, lifetime observers of the young bomb chucker, who was Anthony albanese. I mean, famously grew up raised by a single mom in government housing in Sydney's inner western suburbs, famously he said, I lived to fight Tories. And he was a lefty at uni left politics all the way through university and here he is meeting King Charles the third for a private audience. And why not? I mean, he's the prime minister of Australia, and he's made very clear that whilst he's a lifelong Republican. He wants to see the monarchy replaced by an Australian head of state, he does say that now is not the time if he's lucky enough to get a second term. And a lot of people say that should never happen over here. That's the time when the debate over the republic and the in fact the referendum that would be needed. The second term of a labor government would be when he would put it up. For now, he's very, very happy indeed to express our national condolences to the new king. And say, Sue Charles the third, exactly what his mother made to this country because she was a towering figure. Yeah, even, you know, even those idiot Celtic supporters who yelled at, you know, if you hate the queen slap your hands, you know, the queen was a towering figure of the 20th century. And she was ahead of state. So I think it's entirely appropriate, even helping these critics over here are saying he's doing a good job. What? Is your call if you held a referendum tomorrow? What would the result be? I think it would get over the line. It wouldn't stand a chance because such is the reverence in which the queen was told. It'll be different with Charles. I mean, what's he going to be like? Is he going to have pissy fits with fountain pens all the time? I don't know. Certainly his mother never did. And you know, there's a great deal of affection for the UK. Albanese is already met at Liz trust the brand new British prime minister. He says there's a great deal of the economic opportunity between Britain and I suppose Australia because of Britain's exit from Europe. But also, I don't think it orcus August the Australian U.S. UK submarine lines where that sits we're not sure but certainly there's going to be no ridiculous idea that Australia has to have a special Australian design.
