"These people so you are man. In tokyo we talked to you last when you were marveling at the robots sinking half court shots at the men's basketball games. Were going to get to men's basketball on a sack. We'll get to russell. Westbrook ben simmons because my soul still has not recovered from that saga with the sixers. But you're on the precipice of week two of the olympics and the last time we talked to you you were extraordinarily disoriented and you had a giant jar of peanut butter. So what's the mood in tokyo. These days the japanese are doing great and he's olympics ryan windhorst a week into covering the olympics from tokyo. They've won more gold medals than they ever had seen olympics. There are still protests happening but From watching the reaction of the japanese success and talking to my friends who are consuming japanese media the games have come a long way in the eyes of the japanese. and so. that's kind of ben this This whole this whole experience. You make the best of your situation. And the japanese have made the best of it and and are thriving are yes so i know you're you're still in quarantine right but you're getting out to see events and stuff. What did you see today. Yeah i went to the men's golf today and For the first time since the gulf became a sport again The us wanted the andrew. Shaw flea who is number five ranked player in the world. Outduel tedeschi matsuyama the favorite to win and the masters champion and they were actually in the final round together at augusta the masters and when mets yama one and on that day Softly cut a joke. He was in choke position. Today i was walking out. There was ninety degrees hundred. Four heat index all sweating a no fans but a lot of the volunteers for their cheering. Matsuyama on and he could have very easily blown this but he made a couple of great saves and that was great to document so speaking of the united states avoiding choking and holding on for dear life to take home a gold medal. I do wanna talk about men's basketball. Because the last time i watched them was on saturday. They play the czech republic. They blew him out. One nineteen eighty-four. That's too blowouts in a row brian. After they lost to france they had just blown out iran before that so the temperature check on team. Usa is telling you what in the second half of that game They looked as good as i've ever seen them look in person. They were spectacular. And the first half they were up by four on the checks. So i'm a little sensitive to announce that arrived. Look out. there's no stopping him now but they definitely bared their fangs and kevin durant for the first time this summer even dating back to the exhibition games looked like the. Mvp that he is drew holiday has picked up exactly where he left off coming out of the finals and he's just swarming defensively and he had three steals in that game but it felt like about six because he disrupted so many things and gregg. Popovich is made a Starting lineup adjustment. Taking jason tatum. Who really expected to be one of the best. Few players on this roster. He took them out of the starting lineup and led him to be the lead guy off bench and it really worked out. Well he at twenty seven points. He had a breakout performance. So the ball was moving. They were defending their working together. They had a nice rhythm and flow the roles look like they fell into place if they continue to play the way they did in the second half against the checks. They're going to win the gold medal. I just don't know if they're going to be able to continue that so. I know tatum off. The bench is a super meaningful. Adjustment brian absolutely. But i'm also curious about all of this uncertainty. How kevin durant is fitting into this hierarchy because he is the obvious guy to be the face of this olympic team. He's the best player. he passed. Carmelo anthony this weekend to become team. Usa's all time leading scorer. But is he the unquestioned leader of this team at this point. Well he's the captain when they're all playing well he's the best player and he showed that in in the win over the czech republic. Because not only did he have twenty three points but he had eight rebounds and six assists. I mean he was basically playing like lebron james out there as a point forward and defending big men defending small men and and hitting a bunch of shots Draymond green is playing a very important role. What is that role. How would you describe that because dre bond as an nba player at. This point is not as useful as he used to be. Well of course he's probably trying to recruit for the golden state warriors. Everybody there i guess except for durant. He already recruited him. But when you talk to the players as they discuss about how draymond will come up to them and say. Hey you know you need to do this. In fact one of the key moments. I really think so. Far in this olympics is after. The americans lost a france and that it was a game that they were ostensibly offensively and damian lillard was Passing up shots which is not who he is. No green pulled damian aside and you know damian. Lillard is one of the leaders of this team. Not any heat on kelvin. Johnson isn't pulling him aside. Zach levine is not pulling him aside draymond green pulled him aside and said listen. You are damian lillard. You do not pass up open shots in the fourth quarters of games and dame described. How dre montana pulled him back in to worry needed to be hit seven three pointers in the next game. Draymond is said that they run some of the same stuff that he would run with steph curry and make mega comfortable and the other thing about it is is at the start of this. We were really watching bradley. Beal and draymond green because bradley beal was a guy who we thought might be available in the warriors to trade for him and and maybe had bradley unfortunately not left with cova. That draymond will be working on that but He is absolutely totally bonded with dame lillard. Let's just say that there's no question there about those friendship and ability to work together. Okay so let's get back to the field here because ahead of the us which is advanced now officially to the quarterfinals. Single elimination time brian. Doer died time. They get spain tomorrow. Tuesday for those who are not familiar with what. Spain is alabel in international play. Who are they. What is in front of the americans here. Well the spanish of been probably the most successful international team outside of the americans for the last twenty years. They've won the world cup twice including the one that they just hadn't thousand nineteen in the classic game that the redeem team won the gold medal game in beijing in two thousand eight it was. Spain was playing high level basketball. They are an older team. Both saul brothers play and get real midst of. There's a bunch of Former nba players. That you may recognize who are still out there. I barely recognised ricky rubio. How would you describe the way that ricky rubio was looking these days because it's kind of majestic he's in still in the nba. Pablo just got traded in a couple of days but he is got the full. Jesus look i guess you could say four four flowing hair messianic yes And here's the thing when he like many players that you hear about on opposing teams. He takes on a messianic quality when he plays for spain he is he was the mvp of the two thousand nineteen world cup and he puts up big numbers there an older team and experienced team. The americans did play them. Two weeks ago in las vegas and won by seven and that was a good win for them at the time they are much better team the americans are sense then so they will come in its favorites and quite frankly if the americans play their game they should win the spanish or maybe a little bit past their prime but.

"Something up with damian lillard. They're in their connecting dots or is there viability. Connecting those dots bronwyn. Ben simmons has something that could happen this summer. That could change a lot as probably not something anybody thinking about. He's i think about it as far as i know. He is committed to playing for elster australia in the olympics. Tokyo and the australians have a great team and they They're they're going to hope to medal for first time and that team is loaded with guards and so ben if he plays is probably not gonna play guard. Patty mills is team. Australia's a point guard and patty mills. International competition plays like steve nash. He's amazing and so on that team. Ben simmons well not play point guard. He play maybe center maybe power forward and we and by the way. The americans are sending a real team. Kevin durant is going to play devon booker depending on what happens with the sun's gonna play bradley beal. Damian lillard draymond. Green jason tatum. It's going to be a real team it's going be. It's not our eighteen with our minus team. And so then someone's gonna play big time games against in gets major competition in tokyo. And i would say to him if i could get to him. If i was someone who who was closed. And i would say ben. You have a great opportunity to pivot here. Show what you can do. When you're not just worried about getting fouled when you're not just In a position where you have to play off of Joel embiid and that could be a moment. Because if he can show versatility on the world stage here not only may he transfer what he looks like short-term philadelphia but he may transfer transform with teams look at him as on the trade market and so if indeed make them available i would be watching to see now he can pull out tomorrow in numbers could happen. I hope he doesn't so is there any truth to the fact that we're talking about lillard. Somebody people were. They can't win importantly he can't win there. He wants out or anything like that. Is there anything up with damian lillard. Do you know brian. Oh i don't know damian. Lillard is fully invested in portland. As far as i know. I mean he's been Fully invested in the coaching search He's been involved in the coaching search. He is going to tokyo. Doesn't fuck a guy who's asking for a trade We'll see the coach who gets hired there. But i don't think dame's going anywhere i think. If you honestly made i know a lotta people are leaping to conclusions about portland. Not just for lillard but for cj mccollum an. Yeah you could I could write you up a nice seven hundred word article about analyzing that That possible trade. But then simmons is a really good player and if he became available there'd be a lot of teams making offers And you know there'd be a lot of options It's not as cut and dried is making a snap decision after a miserable defeat. Like this ryan windhorst is always making a smarter here chatting on the rich eisen show. What is up with chris paul. What's going on. is he vaccinated best. You can tell and wh why. Why don't we find out like is it. A is a close contact. Does he have it like why. Aren't we learning all of the details in the leading me to ask you a question. Five different ways brian. From from what. I've been told he was vaccinated. And he is in his unfortunately has a breakthrough what they call a breakthrough infection. He is coby positive or was tested. Positive last week despite being vaccinated and That's actually happened with a couple of nba players and it's A reminder of why they still have protections You know we don't have a lot of data yet Rich on what happens to folks. Who have a breakthrough infection like that. Hopefully he's not experiencing severe symptoms but In during the during the season of the nba players. Who tested positive. You either had to go through to back to back negative test or you had to go through ten days after your symptoms stopped and almost every player who got who tested positive was out for about two weeks And again. I wouldn't say well. Well well. there was thirty five players who tested positive with breakthrough infections and and there was a bigger sample. But i don't have it and so the reality is when chris. Paul tested positive. Last monday You had to face the reality that he could be looking at ten to fourteen days. Just because the two negative test don't come very often and despite him being vaccinated the whole the whole league is not vaccinated and because of that. The nba has had their protocols to try to avoid an outbreak. And so it's a terrible hand to be dealt to the sons The reality is he may look at having to miss three or four games. They're not giving us updates on his daily testing. Which i understand. It's a privacy matter but we just don't know You know publicly. At least you know y you know what test looked like and what his symptoms are but the reality is you know i. I don't see him back for game. Two and i it could be longer and so the fact that the sons are able to get such a victory and they got a huge break. Rich this is. This is reality. The fact that the western conference finals are being televised by abc and espn worked in the son's advantage..

"Well yes it is Friday congratulations we just finished the first calendar month without any major league baseball NHL NBA NFL since July of eighty one when they had the strike so there you go you made it may have to be better right ask to be arrested you even know what day of the week is yours I know the why yeah I know today's may day day day hopefully we or read today is a big day in sports calendar never explain the game right now and the end of the network and what I think of may the first I think of a greatest of all time Rickey Henderson stealing third Matt Nokes behind the plate for the Yankees and they were bad Yankee team then Randy Velarde former A. at third base and Ricky finally after twenty three days in twenty one games of Lou Brock traveling with his family okay great is based dealer of all time so congratulations may first to may Japanese Ricky day it is risky day that is that's crazy by the way we talk about unbreakable records just the way the game is played and maybe it does come back and cycle somebody find some number that means that stolen bases could become back in vogue which they certainly are but a site number today in order for someone to break Rickey Henderson's record of fourteen oh six they'd have to average fifty six stolen bases a year for twenty five seasons that's not gonna happen he's averaging fifty six stolen bases for a season let alone twenty five seasons I mean it's ridiculous I mean it's it's an unbreakable record I mean Ricky when it was all said and done his stolen base numbers are just so far out there I mean Lou Brock was nine thirty eight he got to fourteen oh six I mean it's ridiculous but the the career record is one thing but and I you know it's possible someone could do that highly unlikely but I think what's even more unlikely is that any one individual steel one hundred and thirty bases in a single year which she did as a run a young Ricky Rahne back in eighty two oh got caught forty two times that year but still a hundred and thirty and he was young like that he stole over a hundred you plan for Billy Martin and Bayley loved Eminem later Mr hearing how many G. Anke at third in the lineup and it was a great power hitters so yeah neither one of those records as far stolen bases career mark over fourteen hundred but a hundred and thirty one here dear lord so as want to gain higher games Ricky play that year he played a hundred forty nine that year so Ricky was he was playing more than done just five times a week then yes some was only years later Mr here he took care of all of those tight hamstrings so he didn't want to pull himself up at one thirty is amazing and fourteen hundred and nine is also on aging which is total career forty six fourteen of sharia put that in perspective mallet Smith of the mariners lead baseball last year with forty six stolen bases and people still still so when we talk about the unbreakable it's just it's on break will not because somebody could potentially do it or become a good enough base stealer whether B. season or career to do it it's just it's a different ball game you know what when when Ricky was planned think of the eighties kind of base stealers Vince Coleman and Tim Raines and Ricky Henderson and although they still faces of the guys did lead off hitter stole bases got themselves in scoring position did whatever it took and that's just analytically that's just not what you do anymore so he also I mean now the game is all built on who can out Homer it's a it's a home run derby but I think that Ricky could hit home runs as well I mean that's why anytime leader it is far as leadoff homers in a game that Ricky had you know years were hit the high twenties that's the one guy that that could challenge Ricky if he ever could hit enough and play enough and he's on the giants roster right now is sliding Billy Hamilton I think he has the speed to do it but the game is just at a fundamental change as far as you know the importance on the stall invasion better not get thrown out they don't have one anymore there's no pitch outs there's no small ball game is just different but I think if Billy Hamilton you have to you know he has to get to first base enough but if you got the hundred sixty two games and he got up to the plate six hundred seven hundred times he could do it and he had some years in the minors yeah there were just incredible as far stolen bases yeah I'm looking at the numbers I'm I'm trying to look at finding a year since Ricky left in which you'll ever get a hundred thirty in nineteen eighty two and then I'm just trying to look at the number that try one year in two thousand so to try to do doesn't twelve at forty nine you know I mean if you're here I'm having trouble finding the guides Kobe Ellsbury in oh nine had seventy that's the way that's a lot Kenny Lofton ninety six at seventy five so yeah I'm not seen last time someone stole one hundred bases was Ricky Ricky yeah eighty three had allowed mining industry baseball stone a hundred now so that's a big number yeah that's a huge number yeah I'm just I'm looking over the last number of years in L. National League the last time to get one hundred Vince Coleman got one hundred nine in nineteen eighty seven so there you go many items you have our word by the the tarpaulin machine and sampler yet never nearly half of the tire but may first is Ricky Gervais today to be sure it's also a big day in sports calendar job because you know any of the NBA there's a lot of rumblings going on with them but Adams over when he was the first one it was more you know go bare chested positive on March eleventh I kind of had to react then but he said you know where you know that shortly after that no we're not gonna do anything until may the first yeah well today is may the first we're hearing a lot of rumblings about what's gonna go on in the NBA weird Steve Kerr on what Jennifer Asian Rick welts on the U. S. podcast talk about we're not gonna have any more season left but I he's talking about the regular season and there was an article written that lebron James saw about canceling the rest of the year including the policies and I don't think they're at that point in any way but Jeffrey Spender represents a lot of NBA coaches also works in Major League Baseball she represents Aaron Boone of the New York Yankees manager there so I just what it is where are we at with the NBA and one thing that has come up is to go to Disney but not Disneyland but Disney world in central Florida and they they the the key thing there is ESPN and Disney there they on about forty acres and they are the number one right shoulder the N. B. A. T. and she's got a big package but Disney and ABC and ESPN ABC as the NBA finals so they're greatly motivated to get these games on the year and anytime in the calendar so I think they would give the forty acres would they be allowed to do that could could they bring their family there what about testing going on even if the the real thing now is there's obviously not enough testing in the United States and for professional athletes to get you know to step to the front of the line to get tested I don't know how many tests they would need thousands obviously so I you know you're talking about no sports in April for the first time since thirty one July of eighty one what movement or we could have been a professional sports in the NBA and the NHL going to figure out what they're gonna do in baseball right behind them because now we're in the month of may yeah and I agree and there's a couple of good pieces ESPN wrote Adrian roads Grabowski wrote Ryan Windhorst talk about some logistics and everything and as I read through the whole thing I started thinking to myself because as you and I've talked about the NFL's in a different place Major League Baseball I think at some point is going to start I think that I've heard numerous times from people within baseball that they'd love to kick off July fourth and have this big thing and I think that's that's possible the NBA is in a tough spot because like you said that in this in this piece that would your house he wrote I mean you're talking about fifteen thousand tests I've I've had conventions when I work for ESPN for years all the conventions were down at Disney world in on the boardwalk and all those hotels and I've been in those gyms I know I know exactly what they're talking about I think you could potentially work but they know the logistics and when you would have to start how long it would take there are just so many different things that are mind blowing that they would have to do but as you pointed out numerous times it starts with testing and safety and who would be there I think they've talked about all these kind of robotic things that they would do and I I can't imagine that they could have families down there the less people the more and then not even to mention that financially the guys don't get paid anymore in the playoffs so what's the incentive of I'm gonna be away from my family for two months I understand for lebron and the top teams in that you know I feel bad for teams like the Lakers in the box and their fans and so forth but how many players from lesser teams are going to want to go down there risk themselves not get paid and in in do it because the league has rights holders that they need to appease they there are a lot of issues here well but I I don't know why you would save basketballs in a worse spot than baseball I mean there's more players on the roster in baseball you have to have more testing after they office Ronald players they have more time well I think that time what what what what what to watch calendar they're talking about starting next year and on Christmas you know baseball's got a problem as far as the weather basketball you play indoors you could play baseball in a dome I don't think N. B. A. feels that way there's lesser people and we've talked about the economics well in Debbie knows this well not only is players but about the roll back and putting money into escrow if they don't finish the regular season how is that gonna work for players or coaches you could wave that and sell the players were not going to ask you to come back thank you know give us money back if you play the playoffs or you could say you got to pay it back and what would be their motivation it's going to impact next year's salary cap if you don't have any playoffs this year you're not gonna get that revenue ESPN ABC Disney and she and she they they've got to get a rebate on this so this is just money you've got to generate at some point if you don't generate any the V. R. I. goes down in the overall you know Jana she's not gonna get fifty million a year for five years I don't think I don't know how it all works so I hear you but I I think I I think basketball's got a much better chance to do this because they only have to do it for an entire day of a regular NBA playoffs is too much you could have done much shorter if you had do they do at the forty acres in Disney and they don't have to pay the players and then they could work out a deal the whole thing is going to be the deal with the with the players union Michelle Roberts R. runs their union but Debbie a lot and lightness and how this is going down yeah I just want I I wonder what the deadline is before for the NBA and like you said they haven't announced anything and as I said Labor Day yeah so and I think they could I think they can do that it's just that their I think their biggest obstacle like you you've pointed out is I understand the motivation Justin Verlander basically said today that he'll play baseball no matter what he's got you know he's got enough money to live off the rest of his life he's got Kate Upton at home so I think that if Justin Verlander saying he'll play baseball just about under any circumstance any circumstance but he wants to get back and play I just wonder the financial aspect of the players and how they're gonna peas and like you said I guess it's it's the money for for next year and not to have those those numbers drop but I think there's a lot of players are just gonna go where I don't know that to be interesting to see what what they come up with most whole thing all right Debbie span is gonna join us as you pointed out we'll talk about that or talk to for a ten thirty children like this and some of the things and then see your agent as well correct okay well I just recently hired her she's terrific I've known her for a long long time but she she's expanders daughter yes she is and we're talking about the hall of Famers Gerry always said the greater expander so we visited with are not willing to check in on Debbie just aren't her as your mom is doing because you know it's tough for older people they're cooped up in arch yes so much energy the hall of Famer so we'll just check in under the NCO or her dad's doing as well hi Debbie Spender at ten thirty outside which we haven't talked to in awhile that the giants at eleven thirty very Sims seasonal favorite played early with Joe Staley and then that bill Clinton's gonna join us about one o'clock and go through the NFL draft lobbyists is special look at what the forty Niners did in some of the big stories it came out of the draft will do that at about one o'clock so that means we'll move the four play around as well plus will come up next before we talk to Debbie and holders big poll you just told me that it has been or is on the verge of being directed so tell you what today's is all about on Friday all that coming up Papa nine thank you journalists came B. "But now and he's telling everyone the things will be fine, and you need to pump the brakes and relax a little bit not freak out crickets. Well, he's also I mean at that point, Brian Windhorst becomes the most plugged in writer, and the tire NBA. He I mean like Momo JR. Zach Lowe none of them have and Shams can't hold a candle. Do win horses. The guy that understands the entire NBA Lance, he's our guy. But yeah, it is kind of funny, how that works out. But yeah, look, he actually went to the extent of Dave kind of talked about it earlier when he was here because we had David mcmenamin in here earlier today, Dave attell you and Dave talked about how LeBron and his team are, you know, they're, they're pulling the rope in the same direction Bryant took us to further that. There there's been a few sieve in their praise and their belief that things will work itself out. So, you know, you and I talked about LeBron is recruiting LeBron is doing the right things even a surprise to Brian into the extent that he's doing it. And look, if I'm surprised by that's one thing, I know, I've been around the guy, you know, for lack of a better term for eight years, or whatever it's been nine years, Brian's been around with him since I was a teenager. So for Brian to feel that Ryan Windhorst, literally wrote the books on LeBron yet, like books poorer, right? So I feel like all that points to good things for the Lakers, look, man, he LeBron right now is their best shot. It may not work. It may not be enough. But he is the most sellable thing to free agents, and that is going to be in part because he's engaged right like any questions about his engagement, get put the bed if he's recruiting hundred percent and also to if you're a free agent wondering about okay, what about the politics and Bs. And that exists he stuff to rest can put it to bed. But I think part you put it to bed by proactively pitching in a way that saying, I need you. Yeah. Like I need you not worried about the whose team it is. I'm not worried about, you know, everybody finding their place in the pecking. Order meant I I've only got a couple of years here. Man, I need to get this done, and he could sell the guy whoever it is on your the next guy. Like like you said, I've only got a couple years year, and I can turn the keys over to you. Even though I do believe that's what he wants for Anthony Davis, but it's still a pitchy can make to anyone else. Do you guys will believe it, though? I mean because like this was always the thing about Kobe when he wants you believe it with LeBron, I believe that he will turn the keys over when he's ready. That's the that's the thing because I remember like, you know, Dwight's only year with the Lakers. Oh, we didn't feel like he was ready to do that. He should have to do. But I remember hearing people say that Dwight's got it to man that torch. And I'm like it's not a real torch. Like, like it's not an actual torch. It's not it belongs to Kobe until he's damn well ready to turn it over and nobody's gonna take it from right? That's the way it works. The torch would have blown out at some. If it was a physical. Toby gave up the torch. He was two thousand sixteen. He retired. Yeah. That's how the torch cut surrendered. Yeah. And LeBron has it now. But like do you think guys around the league will believe him when he's if how many torch passing have there been in sports period? Like think about it in football. You Joe Montana Steve Young. That was messy, no. Yeah. Right. Absolute. There's not a lot of great ones in the history of sports. I can you name a good torch passing. Brett farve a-rod. Yup. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I'm trying to think what and maybe this is a positive sign for the Lakers LeBron's, once Wade, and Wade and LeBron decided it's got to be true. There was that, that it wasn't easy to remember that I was here for it wasn't easy getting that..

"The moms out there that is the phrase that you see on Twitter and Facebook all the moms out there were just so sentimental fold with genuine care. Happy mother's day to all the moms out there, whoever that may be I'll get the shot on at a hip hop show. Public enemy or something. What is this all the moms out there? Good. Good. I did say we were talking about. We got two games. Seven today, by the way, gave seven Glazer's nuggets today. Coverage begins three eastern on ESPN radio and the ESPN app. Also have Toronto and Philadelphia. We were talking about the best two words in sports. Have we come up a game seven seems to be the two best words sports, which would lead you to believe today's the greatest day in the history of sports because you got a pair of game sevens. On the hardwood? Are there any better? Two words in sports that you've been able to generate over the last hour this program Myron VIP access. I mean, if you've never been in this sweet life, like I'm to the I know a couple of people who have that kind of access man, and you get invited to the sweet life. You realize that like rich folks are a lot different than the rest of us. And I'm telling you VIP access will change you as a person and you'll never want to sit in the regular seat to give you can never go back. If there's the heart of is the point of no return, I did say because it's mother's day. And my wife might be listening. I said the best words and wife are I do and not necessarily did. I believe that. But it's she sees listening. She texted and said, I don't wanna hear I do on mother's day. I want to hear I'll do it. So. Very much for the rim shots anymore. ESPN radio. Taffer straight talk. Brought to you by straight talk wireless the playoffs. The story obviously in the game sevens today in the NBA, but the drama in the backdrop to the association continues to be what's going to happen in the summer and specifically to these megastar free agents and most recently the story because the Boston Celtics season ended in lacklustre fashion is what is going to happen with kyri Irving. Remember, Kyrie Irving had the, oh, I'd love to love to be here at the celebration on the court, and then that eventually turned into give back to July first. So the swing of emotions and convictions with Kyrie was all over the map. Ryan Windhorst ESPN NBA analyst was on game night and says Tyree to the Lakers. It can happen. Well, I just think that Kerry is open right now. I don't I don't think that's what's going to happen for sure I just think he's open his his he really thought that going through the Celtics was going to be a raft of his career type thing it was gonna be where he could set up his own situation. And it has not worked out that way. So I think he is doing what a lot of teams have done for months east preparing for free agency. And so I think six months ago, I would have said that there would be no chance to kyri LeBron ever could have played together. Again, certainly not this summer. But now, I do think it's possible. I don't think it's likely, but I do think it's possible. I think more than focusing on Kyrie and the Lakers. I think it more focuses on how potentially wide open. Kyrie's free agency might be at one point. It was. Yeah. He'd been K D with the Knicks. Okay. Well as Brooklyn in the mic, so what about Los Angeles. Oh, the Lakers. Remember, he can go most had that olive branch with libra. Ron Meyer earlier in the season save when he reached out to LeBron. Hey, I feel you about how difficult it anywhere right to to deal with people like me, ironically, what do you think about it? You think that's a legit possibility him rejoining LeBron? I wonder what Akari if like lebrons. The only one he can play with like LeBron's the only one that can stomach him and deal with him. Because this is such a polarizing guy who starts out like you said saying, hey, I love to stay in Boston. And then he makes it clear that hey, I may not stick around. He's not the leader. We thought he'd be down the stretch. Maybe there's only one person that can deal with everything that comes with Kyrie Irving, and that's the bond James. So with that in mind, that's a possibility it won't happen because going back to LeBron would be failure. It'll be kyri admitting failure this is a guy who held on to his flat earth conspiracy theories simply for the fact that he's just too stubborn to admit that he's wrong. This is a guy who is coach. Ching who who was leading his team. And when things got rough he said, yeah, I finally understand the Brian what it's like to coach a bunch of kids a bunch of immature guys who really on your level like to me kyri Irving needs to be in a unique situation where you can deal with everything attacked him. Great basketball player when he wants to be not a great leader. I think that's what we saw this year. So going to LeBron I understand the theories of it, all but curry, I don't think he's going to admit failure. Like that. And go rejoin LeBron James because that's exactly what he would be saying that Schick Byron Metcalf Sunday morning on ESPN radio that makes sense when you say it out loud, but listen to jazz Jackie MacMullan, ESPN NBA senior writer, she's on the hoop collective podcast and recounted this story in a conversation with Kyrie. I asked him point blank this very question. And I said, you know, what everyone is saying they're saying now you're going to go about LeBron. And he looked at me. And he laughed. I said exactly yes or no. And he laughed again. And he put his arm around me any any left. So. That was. Yeah. Ago three or four weeks ago? So everything's in play. Look everything is in play with him right now. So I guess the the way you end that is I transitioned back to you Meyer after you've said, I don't see it happening is. Well, I do that with like waitresses and waiters were they bring his food like just some weird arm around them and smiling and that fan of walking out the door this too can be an odd do sometimes man like I'm trying to figure it is hard. It is hard to read into anything that he says or in this case does try to connect dots. Right. Yeah. But I mean, clearly he had an opportunity there. He's at other opportunities to say, no, there's no way that's going to happen. I think kyri wants to win. I also think he wants to be in control, and in his mind guys like that to me, Matt like you have to play basketball a certain way, you got operate a certain way to be on their level and car is going to have to play with another star who can relate to him like that. Because his style didn't work the way we thought it would in Boston. So maybe he is thinking about going back to play with a bomb. But I also think how it Cari answer the questions of. Yeah. Remember the guy that you got away from? Because you wanted to do your own thing improve. You could be your own, man. Why did you go back to him? That's gonna it into that. Wouldn't that also show if he did that almost a sign of maturity an understanding of look, I know where I fit not necessarily going public record and saying I'm not a number one. But going there, look, it's it's a lot more challenging than anticipated. I know I can win with LeBron. I'm excited about doing that that to me would show some growth. That's why I'm not sure we'll see it. But to me that would show a sign of. Okay. I'm getting getting McMullen who collective podcast also talked about how when he reflects on certain things he does have regrets about the way things, and I'm sure he'll have a bunch as he looks back on the Celtics season as well. Give you the last word mad at him admitting. He's not a number one. If he goes back on the prod. That's exactly what he's admitting. And do you see even if he's maturing do you see kyri Irving being mature enough humble enough? Forget maturity, it's about humility. Now that about kyri to me. Says I'll go back to LeBron and say, hey, I was wrong. I need you. He's just not that type of dune. It'll be interesting to see what the Boston Celtics decide to do. And a lot of that will depend on the lottery the draft Al Horford. There's a lot of different things that are still in play there. You don't want to lose the asset. And I get all of that you'd rather side. And then eventually trade if you can so you can at least get something for him. Rarely do you get anything of equal value for mega superstar like a kyri Irving? But at the same time with how that season ended. How would the fans in Boston pallet doing this again because there was no sign at in the playoffs that things will get better next year with Kyrie Sunday morning on ESPN radio the ESPN app. We're presented by progressive insurance. That's straight talk wireless, everything for less only at WalMart after Chris Paul's pettiness towards Steph curry, which we will explain it raises. The question are the Houston Rockets, even likeable no matter what they do the off. Season Saturday morning on ESPN radio..

More with Ryan Windhorst coming up, by the way, the book is LeBron Inc. And we'll talk about that to Mason and Ireland ESPN LA I- ESPN LA Brian Windhorst hanging up, by the way, he's gonna brand new book out called LeBron Inc. One of the things that we were just talking about this interesting is the way. Lebron met Rich Paul which was in an airport. But for a very specific reason. Yeah, I think LeBron was going to the final four which which was in Atlanta and rich was going to Atlanta because he had a business where he sold throwback jerseys. So back, then nearly two thousand throwback jerseys were really popular, and at least in the Akron Cleveland area. Apparently, he couldn't get the really good ones. Rich was wearing a like authentic high end Warren Moon, throwback jersey. Lebron was wearing some I don't remember what he was wearing these wearing a different one. And it was sort of like low rent. He sheep for throwback jersey. He was almost embarrassed a walked up to him. He was like where did you get that jersey because there was just an availability issue. Right. And he goes, oh, I I lo- business. I get these jerseys. I go down to Atlanta, which is where he was going to have a guy down there. I buy them from and I take orders, and I get him. And he goes, well, I would I have been dying to get my hands on a Joe Nemeth. Rams LA Rams through. That was what he wanted. Yeah. Great story. And so he's like give give me your number. Gimme a week, whatever. And the bridge got it form, and they start talking about their veterans actually have a similar background in that they're from the inner city, but they went to private schools. They had apetit to go to private schools where they were definitely in the minority and Richard a few years older than him, and they just had this relationship and LeBron liked him. And this is few years before he turned pro he was like midway through high school in this happen. That's where their relationship started. And then the other two guys in their group maverick Carter and rainy mims were they already there when he met rich come later. Yes..

"What teams need the cannonball into the pool with Bryce Harper. Plaski started us off Harper's gonna get more money because he's a better off into player. He's more marketable player. He actually occasionally hustles he'll get more money and the Phillies are the team. It's going to give it to him. Because he'll he's there player one player away for maybe the World Series. They need desperately and the pressure on them. Now, they will pay them a lot. It will pay Scott with a lot of money, easy or the Machado. I think this stuff or call them Machado gives you something defensively. Harper does not they're both can be good hitters for a long time. Harper ceiling is higher. But does he get to those two thousand fifteen? And as for the Phillies who everybody believes they're gonna go after them does that lead in two years. They can't go after Mike trout who they would prefer to have is they're bringing a whole point in time. Well, he's not faint. He's leaving. I don't think you can wait two years and that you win the trout sweepstakes. If you have a chance to win the Harper sweepstakes. Now defense is absolutely on the side of Machado everything else for me is on the side of Harper. As while you are more willing to give him the same years and a little bit more money. As Bill said, he is a guy that sells tickets Machado is not he's a guy that I trust to put in the work throughout the entirety of that career. And that and that tenure. You problems though, Bill one of the things about his hustle is often gets injured, which is the reason why we haven't seen him reach those levels and secondarily his values actually highest to the team. He already played for who needed a star. If he goes somewhere else, he's necessarily the same guy. Even if he is maybe as Margaret I don't think he means the same thing to another franchise. I wouldn't with them. What are your being nationals spoken like a national span, you're smoking like somebody from the district of Columbia understands the fan base and relate to the franchise. It's not as much about basketball as it is about his star relative to other people in that city on that just broke Bill. Plash clin. I did the all star game that didn't pay off. But I'm gonna do it. Again, this time I'm gonna go with the guy who's going to lead the bucks of the best record in the NBA. Just think about that, Milwaukee Bucks. Best record. He plays defense. Played good defense. Most of the time hard doesn't do any of that..

"They don't really add Jimmy is a really good player. He's a great player, but I wouldn't describe him at shooter key can make shots. But that's not something. He's not a JJ read, it quit space the floor kind of guy. He's a pressure shooter. Yeah. He's a pressure makes Johnson big moments that that's right. But what they're his sort of been so far is that Embiid already didn't have enough space inside because Ben Simmons needs that that space. Why would argue stretches the floor more than Ben Simmons? Does. I would also even argue that Ben Simmons is a is a defensive big. I mean, I mean in an ideal world, I think Ben Simmons of his point. Point power forward. But you know, if still so early in his career, I think he's still learning how to play and it's still learning how to use him best. But I just think the Sixers they've got a lot of talent as you mentioned. I just don't know if they've got it all allocated, and I think as you mentioned in the story, there's a dedication to try to let this play out. And so I do think that you know. When they made when they made the trade, they knew they are rolling the dice, and that dice roll is the stakes of on the gotten higher because it hasn't as you said swimmingly, but it's a long way between now and July, and it could turn around, you know, that's, you know, as we as we we learned from we've learned from many different teams that ended up winning. You don't have to like each other. Like, you just have to find a fit on the. So net one year from today. Whereas Jimmy Butler play. The LA LA thing has always been at the forefront of his mind. So the clippers thing makes a lot of sense to me because I look at the Sixers, and I understand they wanted to roll the dice. I just don't see this plane out. Well, I feel like they've they've they've rolling the dice. It's gonna come up snake eyes. They're not going to get to where they wanna go. And then what? So then you're gonna try to resign. Jimmy, not you're gonna let them walk after you you've given up a couple assets to get him. I don't believe that that they are. They are going in the right direction. Frankly, I don't think that this decision even if you give it time as Ramona pointed out, I don't think they're they're going to get to that to that level in you've got to make these choices they made their choice there. I don't think it was the right one. So. People said that term as people said when they made that trade it was sort of the final nail in the process. The process was over and. Yeah, and. This is one of the things when you transition. To a team of not a team of expectation, but it's not a team of potential but team expectation, which is where they transitioned. You get. That's what you run into. Unfortunately, I have an appointment, and I have to go I feel like we were going good. But we'll just do it again later Ramona.
